From the editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine and author of Why Good Girls Dont Get Ahead but Gutsy Girls Do comes a debut novel about a true crime writer for New Yorks hottest womens magazine. Bailey Weggins, a clever writer for a leading womens magazine, Gloss, is dragged into a murder investigation by her editor-in-chief and boss from hell, Cat Jones. Cat is a woman who gets what she wants from her employees, so when she discovers that her nanny has been murdered she insists Bailey find the killer before the police do. Was the chocolate that poisoned the nanny meant for Cat, known for her love of truffles? But then, the beautiful, duplicitous nanny has an enemy list all her own. The investigation takes Bailey from the streets of New York City to the swankiest Connecticut suburbs and Bucks County retreats, and everyone is a suspect, including the catty editors at Gloss. Bailey proves that she is the original gutsy girl when she outwits the clever killer.

Bailey Weggins, the very clever and the very irreverent true crime writer for leading women's magazine Gloss, is dragged into a murder by her editor-in-chief boss from hell. Cat Jones interrupts Bailey and her lover in the early hours of the morning, demanding that Bailey find her son's nanny, missing from the morning roll call. Bailey arrives at the townhouse and finds the nanny's dead body amidst sea-foam towels, vomit, and a golden box of truffles. Death by chocolate becomes literal as forensics soon reveals a garden-variety poison. As Bailey looks into who killed the nanny, her search takes her from the swankiest Connecticut suburbs to Bucks County weekend parties. She discovers that Cat, not the nanny, may have been the intended target of the poisoned candy, and everyone becomes a suspect-especially the catty editors at Gloss, many of whom have it in for the chocoholic boss from hell. Then Bailey uncovers that this may be a conspiracy to do away with all the editor-in-chiefs of women's magazines. The police are on the case, but it is Bailey who closes in on the killer-and learns just what people will do to protect their reputation.

3 out of 5 stars Light, enjoyable murder mystery.......2007-09-21

I was more impressed with this book than I'd imagined I'd be. Though White can't hold a candle to authors like Elizabeth George, P.D. James, and Sue Grafton, she does have a knack for a chatty style that is interesting and involving and draws the reader in. The drawback to this style, though, is that the story tends to get too bogged down by details that don't have much to do with the main plotline.

Bailey is a good character but feels a little too stock. She has a backstory and feelings but, at times, she's too given to dialogue that sounds stilted and cliched--especially when someone has done something to give her offense. She sounds like someone at a customer care hotline who's trying to diffuse an angry customer. Still, I liked her well enough and feel that over time and with some additional development she could turn into a pretty engaging character.

The mystery itself was fairly interesting though some of the more mundane details of Bailey's life tend to overwhelm it. The reader didn't really need to know every last dish Bailey orders and this was page space that could have been better served by using it to further develop the central murder mystery plot. The ending was too dragged out and Bailey does some truly and utterly dumb things that I think most rational human beings would know enough not to do but the mystery is tied up fairly nicely.

In general, this book makes for good beach reading and I feel the author can only get better with time. If, however, you're looking for a more nuanced mystery with complex characters, you'd be better served by reading one of the authors mentioned at the beginning of the review.

5 out of 5 stars great murder mystery.......2007-01-13

3 out of 5 stars Light Summer Read.......2006-06-04

I read this book while on a stalled Amtrak so it did help pass the time in a pleasant way, but this could not be considered a riveting mystery novel. The heroine, Bailey Weggins, is a freelance crime writer for a women's magazine who tries to solve a murder. There are several conceivable villains and the ending is satisfying. The women in this book, including Bailey, seem defined by whether they have a man attached to them, what they wear, how fat or thin they are, and where they work. Bailey is in constant need of a caffeine fix. To say they are self absorbed is an understatement. There is never any reflection or sense of empathy for others. For a light summer read, this is fine. It is inexpensive to buy--but checking it out of the library might be an even better idea.

3 out of 5 stars Mystery with insider gossip.......2006-05-07

This was the first book in the Kelly Ripa Summer Book Club series. Kate White is the editor at Cosmopolitan Magazine. The book was okay, it sort of dragged, but the insider information on the magazine world was priceless.

4 out of 5 stars Great Mystery Read!.......2006-01-24

I do not usually read mysteries, and I loved this one! It was a great story, Kate White kept me guessing right until the end who the murderer was. I am looking forward to reading more of these books.

5 out of 5 stars Tied for First.......2006-06-20

I just read volume 1 of "Cable & Deadpool" it was amazing... it is tied for my personal number 1 Marvel series. Tied with "Amazing Spiderman" Volume 1 and "Wolverine: Enemy of the State." FYI check those out if you have not.

Story - 4.5/5 - very few flaws
Artwork - 5/5 - perfect
Dialogue - 5/5 - Cable is now my favorite marvel character.

4 out of 5 stars Serving of comedy with a side of action.......2005-03-28

This was great fun with some genuine laugh out loud moments. I'm not either a Cable or a Deadpool fan, but I didn't have to be to figure out who these guys are and what they do.

A big part of what the author has them do is lampoon the excesses of the 90s comic books scene (especially those of Rob Liefeld). There's a good story underneath, though, about Cable taking decisive action toward his goal of uplifting humanity (and Deadpool taking decisive action without any real goal except to take action).

One word of warning: Cable is undeniably the star of the show here. Deadpool's appearances are mostly for comic relief rather than because he's a true protagonist. Not a problem to me, but for those considering this because they love Deadpool, do bear this in mind.

4 out of 5 stars Really Good.......2005-03-18

This is a really good book featuring Cable, and Deadpool.
this books plays out on the Odd couple theme and it works nicely. The art is really great and fits the story and charcters well. The cover on the other hand is truly horrible. Dont worry its not the same artist thats does the inside. the cover has nothing to do with the story, and Cable looks as if he is going camping.

The story is great. its about an organization stealing this thing that changes appearences. Cable and Deadpool both are trying to get it back. Deadpool as usual is making a joke a minute and Cable is no where near boring. They star pretty well together and i highly recomend this book.

5 out of 5 stars They're Back.......2004-12-25

Deadpool and Cable star together (ironically) in this collection of the comic series cable and Deadpool. I, being a MAJOR fan of Deadpool, couldn't resist the temptation to pool out the money to buy this book, and I wasn't disappointed. From panel to panel, through all the witty banter and sarcastic remarks and one-liners, I was engrossed. Deadpool was brought back with great precision and Cable as well. Happily, this is not just a touch-and-go-let's-kick-some-[...]-and-finish-this-story-to-give-to-the-publishers. Nope, the plot was great (a tad ridiculous at times, but, hey, that's what makes it great!) and followed through the entire course of the book. The artwork doesn't leave much to be desired, if anything at all. Beautiful scenes were put together, wheteher it is a fight, or a quiet contemplation moment. There are couple times where the talk becomes a bit suggestive, but we have a new invention called maturity that takes care of that. All in all, I would recommend this for anyone who is a fan of Deadpool, Cable, the X-Men in general, or just looking for a good read. And honestly, anyone who finds fault with this book obviously doesn't know what they're reviewing and doesn't appreciate good kick-[...]literature.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-10-07

I've recently finished reading this book for the second time in two years, and I've got to say that I just love it. I read many of Heather Graham's novels, and I have really liked all of them. While at times it can be a bit predictable, it is still a very good book. The protagonists are very likable. Even though the fact that they used to be step siblings is a little creepy at first, it doesn't really make a difference.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly written.......2007-06-23

The editor for this book should be fired. I was looking for a quick read in the genre of romantic suspense. The plot was poor and several key facts of the story had major flaws. Also, the grammatical errors were in the double digits at least. It appeared as though this book was quickly written and then rushed for publishing. Definitely not on the same level as other authors within this field.

3 out of 5 stars Surprised to find no review.......2006-09-24

Ok, not one of her best and a reissue, but still worth reading, if you're a Graham fan. You do figure out who the killer is a little too soon in the book, about half way.
Kyle is her stepbrother, but has always been attracted to Madison and she of course has been in love with him all along. Of course they end up not being able to fight the attraction, especially since they are staying in the same house.
You should still enjoy all the interaction between all the siblings step and natural and ex-husbands.
Read it and decide for yourself.

1995 SHAMUS AWARD FINALIST!

Fran Tremaine Kirk lives near Buffalo, NY, with her dog, Horace. When her abusive ex-husband dies while trying to kill her, Fran tries to jumpstart her life by taking a job as a Gal Friday, which turns out to be more dangerous and not nearly so simple as it was touted by her quirky employer.

Her office is upstairs over a beauty parlor called Looks, where a murder is committed shortly after her arrival. Fran gets frightening messages on her answering machine, fights off attacks by a sinister masked man, and finds herself smack dab in the affairs of the local mob.

Just because there is a murder to investigate doesn't mean she can neglect her duties for her shady boss. The calls for the dating service and the orders for articles that can only be sent in plain brown wrappers must be attended to.

She needs the job. Her life has been on hold too long. So when a blue-eyed policeman on duty at the murder scene smiles her way, she starts to dream but is frightened silly. Their friendship bumps along a rather rutted road as Fran gets drawn into the search for a killer.

1995 SHAMUS AWARD FINALIST! Fran Tremaine Kirk lives in a suburb of Buffalo, NY, with her dog, Horace. After the death of her abusive ex-husband, Fran tries to jump start her life by taking a job which turns out to be more dangerous and not nearly so simple as advertised. In her new job, she gets to use the skills she acquired by doing the work in her ex's detective agency while he was too drunk to function. But after a robbery and murder in the beauty parlor downstairs from her new place of employment, Fran gets frightening messages on her answering machine, fights off attacks by a sinister masked man, realizes her car is being followed, and finds herself smack dab in the affairs of the local mob. What she finds almost as frightening is the prospect of romance when a blue-eyed policeman on duty at the murder scene smiles her way. Will she ever lead a stress-free life?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Deserves every award!.......2003-05-30

Fran Kirk is a delight. She's a real woman, with real problems --and a real sense of humor and sarcasm. The mystery is strongly plotted and devious enough to keep the reader guessing. Snappy dialogue makes this one a page-turner. Highly recommended detective novel featuring a promising female sleuth. No wonder it was a SHAMUS Award finalist!

4 out of 5 stars Crime novel.......2002-11-12

Fran Kirk was a battered wife, and one night, while she was trying to take her dog to the vet, her ex-husband Dick attacks her in her garage. She manages to drive away and goes to the police station, and is shocked to discover that Dick is dead. Returning to the house, she recognises Sgt. Haeuser’s car. Wasn’t it there when she drove away earlier?

Fran starts a new job, working as a telephone receptionist, but soon she is offered work as an insurance investigator. A murder vicitm, Sammy, the owner of the beauty parlor below her office, had a life insurance worth a million dollars to his wife. Is the wife guilty? Fran discovers more of Sammy as she investigates the claim. With a string of girlfriends and gambling buddies, there are as many suspects as there are grains of sand on a beach. Fran is determined to find out who killed Sammy, even if it means putting her own life in danger.

She starts getting strange phone calls, a man saying that he’s watching her and she keeps getting followed. A masked man in the woods tries to attack her, but she manages to escape? Who is he? Someone tyring to stop her from finding out what happened to Sam? Or someone else? One night, the masked man manages to break into her apartment and Fran’s life comes crashing down around her...

This is a very well written, fast paced crime novel, with a very interesting protagonist. Fran is not your usual investigator. At the start of the book she is a victim, both of her husband’s abuse and the incompetence of the police to protect her. By the end of the book, though, she has found her strength and depends on herself, no-one else.

The plot is good, with lots of twists and turns, with red herring motives thrown in every which way so that you’re not sure why Sammy was killed, never mind by who. There are suspects galore too, with little bits of people’s pasts to discover and mull over, just like Fran is doing.

A great crime novel.

    Book Description

Blaming the media for reproducing and extolling unrealistic female bodies has almost become a popular truism. Even medical opinion notes that the media can influence young women to starve themselves and therefore act as a possible causal factor of disordered eating.

Yet surprisingly, little work has addressed either the nature of media representations of the body or the ways in which audiences interpret and use such images in our contemporary cultural context.

The Media and Body Image addresses this lack and:

-Draws together literature from sociology, gender studies, and psychology

-Brings together new empirical work on both media representations and audience responses

-Offers a broad discussion of this topic in the context of socio-cultural change, gender politics, and self-identity

5 out of 5 stars Gripping tale of an author stalked by a serial killer.......2001-01-20

So far the only Dreyer book that is not based in a medical setting, it is nonetheless my favorite. The main character, a writer named Chris Jackson, is easy to relate to, both with her reclusive lifestyle and her muddy past. A murder mystery writer, the murders in her books are being reinacted in real life by a serial killer. The characters in the book are almost more enthralling than the murders, which are vividly described and hard-to-forget. The outcome of the book was a big surprise to me, which is a plus in a mystery. One of my favorite books.

4 out of 5 stars Creative but Confusing.......2000-07-20

Eileen Dreyer's "If looks could kill" is a good book. It really is, but it's sort of confusing in a way. But just because its confusing to me doesn't mean it's not good. If you were to ask me is it still worth reading even though its confusing. definately. why not give it a try. The creativeness is partly what makes it so confusing to me. The characters are eccentric and .... well they are basically just eccentric. I gave this book 4 stars and i hope you agree.

    5 out of 5 stars I Loved this book!.......2003-08-05

I thought that the book was amazingly written as did a few of my friends. I passes the books around to my friends and everyone loved it!

    2 out of 5 stars I should have known.......2001-03-12

I should have looked at how many people were eager to sell their copy and not just the reviews I saw below! The story line had a lot of potential but the mystery was never developed. The psycic ability didn't jive either... There was never any hint of who it would turn out to be and no reason for this person to have been the KILLER. The credability that this "mad " person could have fooled so many was beyond belief. That is for starters but even the romance part was purely physical and there was very little I found that made the couples work as a couple... Several couples are worked on in the book but not one seemed to have a strong basis for a relationship... I read the book through as I tend to do to see how all well it tied in but ... being a romance reader and I read about 25 books a month or more... I was not impressed . My bet is that it is geared to people who like their men to be hunks , their women Barbie DOLLs and their romance HOT LUST... and if there is a threat and he has to show cave man instincts to rescue her ... all the better.

    4 out of 5 stars Sizzling.......2000-06-08

Using the glamorous backdrops of Miami Beach, Coconut Grove and The Keys to the dangerous Everglades swamps, Ms. Graham once again develops a plot that is all heat.

Lust and trust get Kyle & Madison through their ordeals as their wealthy extended families play their roles in tracking down a serial killer.

Madison's psychic *gift* of being able to see the victims, but not the muderer and Kyle's FBI expertise, has this once step-brother & step-sister as a team working together at all odds.

Fun, romantic, mystery reading. Great for a summer read.

    5 out of 5 stars A great novel !!!.......1999-06-16

Madison Adair is almost thirteen years old when she hears a strange evil voice talking to her mother, the famous actress, Lainie Adair. Somehow Madison is able to "see" what her mother sees. Right now she "sees" a butchers knife being used on her mother. When the police finally arrive, Madison is unable to identify the killer. ...... Twelve years later, Madison is divorced and raising her daughter Carrie by herself. The visions of the man with the knife have returned just as the city of Miami is being stalked by a serial killer. The FBI send agent Kyle Montgomery, Madison's step-brother to protect her. However, he has his own problems including his very real attraction to Madison. Madison begins to realize that the Miami murders are linked to her own mother's violent death. Though she may be able to feel the killer, he apparently watches her every move. Even kyle may not be enough to keep her safe from a maniac, who seems to know plenty about Madison and Carrie. ...... IF LOOKS COULD KILL is a fast paced romantic suspense novel that will keep readers enthralled from the first to the last page. Maggie is a dauntless woman and her soul mate Kyle would gladly enter the bowels of hell (which he does) for her. The story line is chilling, especially when the identity of the killer becomes known. Book Description

The Wakefield sisters are determined to keep their New Years resolution.  Even if it kills them.

Identical twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield have always considered themselves best friends, but lately they've been acting more like best enemies.  So they make a New Year's resolution:  no more arguing or disagreeing about anything.

Jessica forces herself to gush over Elizabeth's new blouse, even though it's the dweebiest thing she's ever seen.  Elizabeth pretends she's thrilled to run into Jessica and her Unicorn Club friends at the movies, even though the Unicorns are the snobbiest girls on the planet.  And when adorable Eric Weinberg moves to Sweet Valley, the twins decide they can both have crushes on him.

Jessica and Elizabeth will always be sisters...but will they always be best friends?

5 out of 5 stars Witchy Janet and her bets!.......2004-10-13

One day Joe breaks up a fight between Elizabeth and Jessica in Caseys, and Janet catches him.He wasn't ordering a sundae,He was doing a good deed! Janet and Steven want to be the only ones at the New Years party without diapers. No One had Diapers that night.

    2 out of 5 stars IMMATURE.......1999-06-29

I think it's really dumb the way Elizabeth and Jessica fight in this book. They argue about petty, stupid things that don't even really matter. They wasting months of their lives arguing about nothing. Infantile.

    5 out of 5 stars New Year's resolution!!.......1998-09-27

This book is really funny because everyone is trying so hard not to break their resolution so they don't have to so up at the party in a diaper. Janet Howell is making a plan to make sure she is the only girl not dressed in diapers. I recommend this book to anybody!

    5 out of 5 stars Funny in a way..........1998-08-02

The story was funny in a way, because, everyone's making a fool of themselves trying to keep their resolution. They try their best to control themselves from breaking it, but sometimes, they just can't help it. It's especially funny about Jessica and Elizabeth's case. They say the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of what they're thinking towards each other just so they can keep from fighting, their New Year's Resolution. I recommend this book for reading. It's really good.

1 out of 5 stars It was the stupidest book I have ever read.........1998-04-19

It was totally juvenile and I for 1 am not going to get excited about Jessica gushing over Elizabeth's blouse while secretly thinking it was horrible.
