Book Description
KISS THEORY GOOD BYE
NEW BUSINESS BOOK GIVES TEXTBOOK THEORY THE BIG KISS OFF!
Business Expert Writes the Playbook on 'How To' Rapidly Increase Performance and Profit in Any Company.
Bob Prosen cuts like a laser through the fog of political correctness and business-as-usual in his new book, Kiss Theory Good Bye: Five Proven Ways to Get Extraordinary Results in Any Company.
Prosen says he's had enough of the business books that tell readers what to do rather than how. "Forget the platitudes and feel-good anecdotes from a few CEOs and business gurus. Get to the pointthe how-to details that can actually help leaders get the results they need in the companies they run," Prosen counsels.
With the same genius that he used to turn around inherited, underperforming operations within 12 to 18 months in some of the world's most prominent companies including AT&T, Sprint, Hitachi, NCR, and Sabre, Prosen delivers a straightforward, no-nonsense, battle proven guide to accelerate performance and profits in any organization.
"A smart business leader can achieve unprecedented bottom-line results by forsaking abstract discussions and vague textbook theory, shutting down endless excuses, killing off company politics, holding people accountable, and simply doing things that clearly work," says Prosen.
Kiss Theory Good Bye shows you how to quickly and consistently achieve extraordinary results in leadership, sales effectiveness, operational excellence, financial management, and customer loyalty.
Packed with easy to follow, step-by-step instructions, this book will show you how to
Achieve consistent results, quarter after quarter
Align your entire workforce to meet the organization's top objectives
Increase accountability so you get the results you need
Attract and retain top talent
Beat your competition and lock in customer loyalty
Reduce costs while increasing quality
React less and have more time to plan
Make your job easier and your organization run more smoothly
Contrary to the book's seemingly corporate focus, readers quickly point out that his business execution principles apply equally to not-for-profit organizations. As Los Angeles Unified School District Business Manager Michael A. Eugene reports, "Kiss Theory Good Bye is a compelling read, offering a toolbox to public- and private-sector managers alike to help establish clear focus, increase accountability, effective management, and measurable outcomes."
While other business books try to tell you what to do to run your business better, faster and for greater profit, Bob Prosen's Kiss Theory Good Bye gives you the tools and step-by-step directions to make it happen. For leaders who demand superior results, Kiss Theory Good Bye delivers the goods for taking immediate - and lasting - action.
My goal for sharing my knowledge and experiences is to give you the answers you need to immediately enable your enterprise to achieve its full potential. Leaders want their ideas and initiatives consistently carried out without hassle and rework. They want accountability, and value results over theory. I wrote Kiss Theory Good Bye with two principles in mind. First, theory would be replaced with proven tools, tactics, and answers that get results. Second, all of the information must be relevant and directly applicable to today's business challenges without the need for translation.
Until now this information has only been available piecemeal, leaving you to find, assemble, and translate it to fit your business. You might have gathered some of it through mentors, by trial and error, or by surviving the "school of hard knocks." But by the time you finish reading Kiss Theory Good Bye, you will have the answers you need to immediately begin improving results throughout your entire organization. And you will find that this book will remain a useful resource for quick, proven answers to resolve your most pressing business challenges.

Required Reading for MBA Students.......2007-09-24
From the moment I read Prosen's book, I knew it had to be required reading for the MBA class I'm teaching. Because my day job puts me in the trenches with organizations of all sizes, I knew that this book hit the nail on the head. While other books make the case for getting from "good to great" this book creates the roadmap for HOW to achieve it. With relevant examples, usable tools, and a down-to-earth common sense approach, Prosen provides a timeless tool of common sense for senior leaders of organizations. He also provides applicable reasons for addressing the "nay sayers" in the organization. If you're tired of books that provide a lot of fluff with little take-back-to-your-desk-application, then get this book. My MBA students have assured me that they are keeping this book in their library.
Practical advice and a powerful read!.......2007-08-11
Our CEO group used the content from this book to transform our businesses in 2007! The tools and concepts are both practical and measurable. To date it has helped our group increase enterprise value by over $500M! The entry price of this book seems pretty reasonable for the return.
There are better places to spend your business-book dollars.......2007-07-19
Thirty-one Amazon customers loved Kiss Theory Good Bye: Five Proven Ways to Get Extraordinary Results in Any Company (Bob Prosen, Gold Pen Publishing, 2006, 256 pages). I didn't. I'm more inclined to agree with Publishers Weekly that this book is "prosaic" and "utterly familiar." There are better places to spend your business-leadership-book money.
Prosen set out to provide answers and tools to help business leaders overcome barriers to success. Drawing on 25 years of consulting experience, and on the self-ratings of some 66 leaders, Prosen claims to have found five crippling habits that prevent success and five attributes of successful organizations.
Unless you just crawled out of a cave, you already know what it takes to succeed:
Superior leadership
Sales effectiveness
Operational excellence
Financial management
Customer loyalty.
You need to read many books, watch many leaders in action, and try many things yourself to really understand each of these. Prosen devotes between 14 and 24 pages to each one. That's just not enough to give you any new insights or ideas.
If I were you, I'd turn to these books instead:
For general leadership insight, look to Confronting Reality: Doing What Matters to Get Things Right and 12: The Elements of Great Managing.
For sales effectiveness, turn to Strategic Customer Care : An Evolutionary Approach to Increasing Customer Value and Profitability and Delivering Profitable Value: A Revolutionary Framework to Accelerate Growth, Generate Wealth, and Rediscover the Heart of Business.
For operational excellence, your focus should be on increasing value-adding activities and eliminating non-value-adding activities. (This isn't the same as Prosen's cost-control focus.) Here I recommend two books that explain Lean thinking: Lean Thinking : Banish Waste and Create Wealth in Your Corporation, Revised and Updated and The Toyota Way Fieldbook.
The best source on financial management I've read is Financial Intelligence: A Manager's Guide to Knowing What the Numbers Really Mean.
For customer loyalty, you can't go wrong if you pick up Lean Solutions: How Companies and Customers Can Create Value and Wealth Together.
Back to the Basics.......2007-07-15
A refreshing theme throughout this book is the need for companies to create cultures based on accountability and results. When organizations have clear directives and hold team members accountable to achieve them, great things happen. Without these basic building blocks, some of the "cripplers" that Bob enumerates - rationalizing inferior performance, planning in lieu of action, and aversion to risk/change spread throughout organizations substantially eroding their effectiveness. This is "common sense, but not common practice" - a mantra frequently repeated by the author.
Bob introduces 5 attributes of highly profitable companies - superior leadership, sales effectiveness, operational excellence, financial management, and customer loyalty. He then explains how to execute in each of the areas. Bob asks questions to help the reader identify where his/her organization stands in each area so focus can be placed appropriately. Lists of actions complete each chapter with references to additional helpful materials available on the author's website.
Leaders/Managers at all levels need to get back to the basics. This book shows them the way. It cuts through the clutter and noise and addresses common problems with practical and proven solutions. If the tips in this book are "practiced," and institutionalized extraordinary results will follow.

Finallly a book with practical and real-world application.......2007-07-02
I was fortunate enough to see Bob speak at a local SMEI event several months back which prompted me to purchase the book there in person. His practical, real-life examples and principles are a must for the successful GM and sales leader. Thanks Bob for a book we can all apply right away!

Book Description
You know how it is. That special event just around the corner and you can’t fit into your designer jeans. You need a fool-proof, emergency weight-loss method that really works and works fast. So how do you safely and quickly lose those extra pounds?
Once again, renowned health pioneer and bestselling author Ann Louise Gittleman has a quick, no-strings-attached solution that is also good for you. She is always on the cutting edge of developing new methods to rejuvenate the body and facilitate weight loss and she’s done it again in The Fast Track One-Day Detox Diet. Gittleman takes the age-old method of fasting and incorporates it into a safe and healthy one-day plan that helps you lose weight fast, gets rid of toxins, and gives your body a cleansing boost to prepare it for even more weight loss down the road.
The plan itself is blissfully simple:
THE PREQUEL: Seven days of adding detox support foods to your diet to prepare your body for the one-day Fast
THE FAST: One day of sipping Gittleman’s “Miracle Juice,” a deliciously spiced mixture of herbs and spices specially designed to stave off hunger, balance blood sugar, boost metabolism, and replenish nutrients (no kidding, the juice is completely delicious)
THE SEQUEL: Three days of reintroducing supportive and immune-boosting foods into your diet to seal in the results
That’s all. There’s no need for a strict maintenance plan or more dieting because the Fast Track One-Day Detox Diet purges your body of fattening toxins so that you’ll keep losing weight once you’re finished. What’s more, if you can’t add those healthy foods to your diet in the Prequel and Sequel, Gittleman provides a list of replacement supplements that you can easily find in your local health food store or online.
So, use The Fast Track One-Day Detox Diet to jump start an over-40 metabolism, melt away vacation or holiday pounds, break a diet plateau, get in shape for that high school reunion or wedding, and even help heal a chronic illness. Even if you’ve been slow to lose weight in the past, the pounds will melt away quickly during your one-day fast. Inside there are recipes to prepare for the fast, shopping lists, and tips for sailing through the fast.
In addition, Ann Louise Gittleman shares the wisdom she’s gained from years of research on health, diet, and nutrition. You’ll find out about hidden toxins found in the environment and in everyday foods, and learn easy steps you can take to live healthier every day.
The perfect diet: simplicity, effortless weight loss, and obvious health benefits from a nutritionist with a proven tack record. You’ll feel so good after your first fast, you’ll want to incorporate the Fast Track’s cleansing principles and periodic fasting into your life for good.
Don’t delay, it’s time to jump on the Fast Track to a lighter, healthier you.

Good idea, but overpromissing.......2007-09-24
There is one thing that I absolutely agree with Ann Luise - the amount of chemicals that we are exposed to in our daily lives is overwhelming. I think that cleansing our bodies from them ("unchemicalizing ourselves") from time to time is a very good idea.
There are several other authors that pointed to this problem in the past. There are also a few who suggested better or worse cleansing solutions. One author dealing extensively with this topic in her few books is Hulda Clark. Gittleman's Detox Diet is only a good addition to the anthology. I do, however, have a problem with the "eight pounds weight loss in a day" idea. Isn't this just a little over-promising?
My favorite author dealing with this topic is Mikhail Tombak who offers total body cleansing solutions (starting with the liver, via kidney, intestines, bones and joints, and ending with blood) in one of the chapters of his book "Can We Live 150 Year?" At the same time Mr. Tombak does not promise losing weight overnight...
More about detox , than weight loss.......2007-07-13
I'm a big of Ann Gittleman. I have all her Fat Flush books. I think that the information they provide is invaluable. I learned a lot from reading her books. I've had success with this book and the Fat Flush Plan. To be honest, I did not lose the weight that I expected to lose from this detox diet. As one reviewer points out, it takes a lot of other factors to help you lose weight. However, the detoxification that I got was worth more than the extra pounds of weight loss. My actual weight loss came from Fat Flush. But, Fast Track helped to make my liver and colon much healthier. On this detox diet, sometimes it was hard for me to find a food within each of her categories that I liked, but I did my best. I liked the Miracle Juice, and it was easy to prepare. I really didn't think it was that bad. The detox day didn't affect me in any adverse way. I ate the next day, but I wasn't ravenous. To anyone who is thinking about purchasing this book, just know in advance that this book will help you in many ways, but it is a very tough 11 days. Just make sure that you're up to it before you begin. Also know that because it says that you COULD lose up to 8 pounds doesn't mean that you will. All I can tell you is that I enjoyed this book, and I will use it again to detox. Five stars for detoxification!
Not really "One-day" as it claims.......2007-04-25
Having lived in Germany I was already familiar with the idea of quick fasts and fasting groups to cleanse the body and periodically offset weight gain. I haven't tried this one because it seemed pretty complicated and requiring lots of effort, planning and the purchase of special stuff like supplements. I was also pretty put off when I read that there was a highly structured 7-day "prequel" to the detox. One-day huh?
Suprise eating health makes you feel better..........2007-03-29
Long term weight\fitness changes require long term effort.
That being said nothing like a jumpstart, new book, fad diet to get you going.
Detox and weight loss.......2007-03-25
Outlines a great program that works for detoxifying your body and for weight loss that still leaves you full of energy

Just amazing.......2007-09-27
I looked at the book for a whole day before I took a big breath and started reading it. This book will probably save my relationship that I was about to quit. It even gave me more ways to appreciate my significant other. To be read as soon as difficulties occur. It will either save your relationship before the worst of it grows on you or will prevent you from staying in an unhappy relationship.
If your are willing to find your truth, open this book, easy to read, and so practical.
Simple and to the point.......2007-09-24
I already knew where I was at when I bought this book. I was as the book says in "limbo" and it was time to make a decision. I could either stay and try to put my all into it all or leave and start new. Well I decided to leave, because that is the direction I had been headed for awhile, and I just couldn't stay. It was a good choice, a scary one. The book was super to the point and the stories of others definately made me feel not alone.
Personally I choose to be happy and live life to the fullest and not let anything hold me back. I wasn't happy so I did what I needed to.
Hope this helps...
Absolutely helpful!.......2007-09-24
After years of spending a small fortune on marriage guidance, consultants, psychologists, and every other useless adviser on the planet - along came this wonderful book. The book takes the reader through a clear, concise, PRACTICAL, step-by-step approach to making that life changing decision of whether to recommit to or leave a relationship. I found the book to be a breath of fresh air in the choking confusion that accompanies such a decision.
Not a book for people looking for solutions.......2007-09-23
This book simlifies marital problems too much - and it seems the author is more in favor of marraiges ending then staying together. I think this book should come with a warning label - buyer beware!
Confirmed what I had already decided.......2007-09-14
The only error I made with this book is not having purchased it before now! I never realized that I was stuck for years in relationship ambivalence, and was still feeling ambivalent when I ordered the book. I had filed for divorce by the time the book arrived, but decided to read it anyway.
I discovered that the author comprehensively described some of the problems in my marriage in a way that no one else had given voice to before, and I received confirmation that though my decision has been and will continue to be very difficult because of my children, it will ultimately be the right decision.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs clarity about their relationship.

My kids sleep like champs.......2007-09-06
This book really helped both of my children to become good sleepers from the earliest ages. We used it with my daughter at 7 months and she was sleeping through the night within a week. We stared even earlier with my son (3 months) and he was putting himself to sleep within 10 days. They are now school aged and sleep like adults (by themselves, with lights out, and until the morning). I see the craziness that some other parent still go through (kids needing them in the room until they fall asleep, kids coming into their beds at night) and I think "thank goodness this is not me." I think teaching kids to sleep is like teaching them to do anything--it needs some guidance, but they will catch on to what is expected of them. I think using this book is one of the best parenting decisions we ever made. Yes, you will have a few unpleasant nights of crying, but you are saving yourself years of trouble! I highly recommend this book.
Great resource.......2007-08-24
Sleeping Through the Night is a book all new parents should buy. We were having trouble getting my daughter to sleep, but read this book and used the suggestions (see page 100!). We consistently followed the bedtime routine steps and within a few days our 4 month old was going to bed without issue. As predicted by the author within 2 weeks she was sleeping through the night. She also goes back to sleep in the middle of the night and down for naps in her crib MUCH better. My only criticism is that the book could have been edited better, there are parts that are repetitive and it seems choppy. Another great part is that there are many anecdotes which are very pertinent and helpful.
I HIGHLY recommend this gentle, but effective bedtime and sleeping method. Friendly advice... we started on a Thursday so we would have the weekend to work through issues.
Helpful.......2007-07-23
This book gives new parents a better understanding of infant sleeping patterns and sleep needs. We followed many of the recommendations (such as the same one toy each night for baby to focus on when falling asleep) for our now eight-month-old son and now we all sleep pretty well through the night.
vomiting is fun???.......2007-07-16
I've read this book twice, and nowhere do I see the "vomiting is fun" quote. This book is VERY compassionate toward both babies and their caretakers. There are numerous studies showing that babies who soothe themselves to sleep are more independent and less fussy later in their development. My sister never read this book but used these methods from her own common sense and had healthy sleepers and happy, well-behaved children. This book repeatedly advises not to leave your baby cry for an extended period. I am due in November and am set to use these methods with confidence, knowing I'm doing the best thing for my child.
love it.......2007-07-02
recommend highly!! all 3 kids have been helped by this book and are great sleepers

A Must for Working Women.......2006-12-03
This book is great. It focuses on what women do in the workplace that underminds thier career. It also talks about how you should act. It's a great book for women working in a corperate jungle. It's a little hard to read at times, and she focuses on her life experiences in the magazine industry. Therefore, some of the things she talks about don't relate well to my field. I'm sure reading this book will help me in my career.
Highly valuable book, even if you're not a self-help type.......2006-10-05
I was just out of college when my friend's mother gave me this book. My friend and I rolled our eyes - we were *definitely* not self-help-book readers. I still am not. But many times over the past ten years I have referenced this book in conversations with friends. I have found myself applying many of the tips that Ms. White provides. You don't have to be a hyper-ambitious, ladder-climbing corporate professional to get something out of this book. Among the tenets that have stood out to me over the years are:
-Don't always need to be liked
-Don't smile too easily
-Don't apologize too quickly
-Don't clean up after other colleagues (especially men)
-Don't be a perfectionist at the expense of innovative thinking or getting things done
Simply the notion that men and women (in broad strokes, at least) behave differently and are treated differently in the workplace was a novel idea to me, coming out of a liberal arts college during the mid-1990s. Reading this book gave me an awareness that everyone needs. Obviously, no one book will apply perfectly to each of us, so you can't go looking for that. But do look to this book for many useful ways of seeing the professional world and your own role in it.
Enjoyed, learned but read it all with a grain of salt!.......2006-06-10
I have never believed, or wanted to believe, in the feminist views of the world. I like to believe that if we focus on results, deliverables, and excellent performance and good merit, we will indeed get ahead - man or woman - in corporate america. Reading this book however did have certain advice in handling some situations that only arise for women in the workplace. Not every bit of advice or circumstance applies to all of us, but overall, this was a very good read, I took bits and pieces of advice from Kate and really did enjoy her stories and her candid sharing of the experience she had been through. I really do recommend it to everyone - not just women. It's good to be aware of our ingrained beliefs and learn to let go of them and face life with a much more open mind.
People Pleasing is not the way to go.......2006-06-01
This is the golden advice: people pleasing is distinct from delivering credible results. In the world of world it is being respected that wins the day. Being liked is a matter of fickleness and not based on results. Results that are measured are all that matters.
Not for "Every Working Woman".......2006-05-24
This book applies to women who are in leadership positions, which I am not, so I despise the title "Nine Secrets Every Working Woman Must Know". It's misleading. I'm currently reading this book and have only found a small paragraph that applies to "every working woman." Given the title, I thought the book would give helpful tips on getting ahead for the average working woman, but it doesn't. Needless to say, it didn't do me much good for where I am currently in my career.
Customer Reviews:
Will it work?.......2007-01-04
As we all know, dealing with peers is one of the most difficult - but essential - skills our children need to learn. In a search for material that could be used for teaching effective problem-solving, assertive communication and negotiation skills, I discovered this book and ordered a copy. I found some of the ideas a bit silly-sounding but figured it might work with young children, so I have developed small "plays" using the book's dialogues to set up the scenarios for my kids to enact. They love it! Now I am expanding this activity to include all students from 1st-6th grade with the hope that learning these skills will help reduce bullying and enhance their communication skills. My only criticism is that the material presented in the book is a bit disjointed and hard to read. I'm not sure what audience the author was writing to, but I felt it too childish to be taken seriously as an adult and too abstract to hold the attention of a child; however, the basic principles are sound and the imagery of the language does appeal to the child in all of us.
Important information for all kids.......2006-02-17
I agree with Dr. Ross's editorial review that "everything about this book is perfect for children." Speak Up and Get Along is a great resource to help kids survive and succeed especially in their social worlds at school. It is clear and easy for them to read. The best thing about it is that there are a lot examples of how to actually deal with bullying and teasing, arguments, peer pressure and making and keeping friends. Each chapter has easy tools for kids to use and the illustrations help. The chapter on talking back to negative thoughts was really helpful. It gives very specific ways that kids can do this. I really recommend this as a gift for the children in your life.
Book Description
A Gentleman Gets Dressed Up is not a book about style-it is a book about the rules-rules that will allow any man to feel more comfortable in the choices he makes about what he wears. It answers such questions as: What does "black tie optional" mean? What do I wear to a wedding at 7:00 on a Saturday evening? What do I wear to a job interview? What do I wear to a second interview, even if they observe a casual dress code? What do I wear to the Academy Awards? What do I wear to a funeral? And what button do I leave open on my suit coat?
This GentleManners book is divided into sections about specific items of clothing and specific accessories. It also delves into the different types of events to which a gentleman may find himself invited. The book concludes with sections on extreme etiquette, such as what to wear to meet the pope, and a section on fashion emergencies, such as what to do when your pants split.
- A gentleman knows that dressing up may require going to great pains; but it does not require that he feel any pain at all.
- A gentleman knows that a formal shirt does not have a button-down collar.
- A colorblind gentleman is not ashamed to mention his disability to a clothing salesperson and to ask for assistance in selecting a shirt or tie to match a suit.

Good guide for what to wear.......2007-04-05
I bought this book for my boyfriend because he's always asking what to wear to this or that occasion, and what looks good with what. It's a quick read, and he finished it in a couple days. He keeps it on the bookshelf and does refer to it when dressing for weddings, work events, and other less common social occasions. I've read the book too - it's a concise guide with a conversational tone that avoids condescension. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a good gift to a young man.
avoiding the fashion emergency.......2007-01-02
The triumphant and unostentatious stroll of Rutledge Press' 'Gentlemanners' series continues with this 2003 guide to a gentleman's kit.
There is nothing over the top or self-indulgent in these pages, just light-hearted advice for those of us who need a little help avoiding a fashion emergency. Understanding my vulnerability means keeping this little book at arm's reach on my reference shelf.
The authors understand that a gentleman is loathe to call attention to himself. Good style is a way of allowing one's more important virtues to shine through without the distraction of bad taste.
The world could use a little more of that.

Flusser's "Dressing the Man" is vastly superior in terms of both content and comprehensiveness. Generally speaking, I found the "Gentelemen" book series to be either common sense or just plain wrong. If you want a very short reference guide, though, this is better than nothing.
Great Additional Resource.......2005-08-15
I bought this for my husband (the dapper clothes horse) just because I saw it in my Gold Box. He is a strict adherent to Flusser, so I took a risk and ordered this because it was low priced.
Turned out to be a great bargain, and a nice surprise that he enjoyed. While he says there was no revolutionary information, it was a good read and great additional resource. Definitely recommended!
Amusing and worthwhile.......2005-01-13
This book is both helpful and entertaining. Its style, which amounts to a compilation of aphorisms--some of them clever--makes it an easy read.
As a veteran of the East Coast button-down collar and navy-blue suit brigade, I was surprised to learn as much as I did about men's attire, although I didn't necessarily agree with everything the book has to offer. But the same was true with "How to Be a Gentleman," where, for example, the author says it's perfectly acceptable for a well-dressed gentlemen to go to church without socks. In "A Gentleman Gets Dressed Up," he devotes an amusing amount of ink to the subject of letting out waistlines to accommodate increases of girth and being prepared to mop up excesses of perspiration. Such curiosities can probably be attributed to the books' regional slant--am I right in assuming that the author is a Southerner?
If it sounds like what you need, this book is amusing and worthwhile, but be prepared for a few odd remarks that clearly come from a corpulent Southerner who sweats a lot.

An Unbelievably Good Book.......2007-09-19

Not great........2007-01-19
I purchased this book as a Christmas present for my parents, who are retired and do alot of traveling. I thought that it would contain lots of great tips. However, I was wrong. Alot of the "discounts" we already knew about, or could get through our insurance(AAA) at any age. Alot of the discounts were so small that it really wasnt worth the time to even try to get them. My parents are not into traveling in large groups either, so that ruled out a large portion of the travel discounts. I did not find much useful information in this book, and ended up selling it to the used bookstore instead of giving it to them.
Book Description
Leaders can find plenty of resources explaining how to give advice. But what about how to take advice? According to Dan Ciampa, too many leaders overlook this “demand side” of advice.
In Taking Advice, Ciampa explains that more outside advisors than ever are offering leaders advice in increasingly costly projects. Yet as advice has become more ubiquitous, leaders have grown less satisfied with it—especially when dealing with high-stakes, unfamiliar situations that require assertive action and speed but also wise judgment. Also, leaders too often overlook help from colleagues, board members, subordinates, friends, and spouses.
Good advice bridges the gap between a leader’s vision and realization of that vision. When leaders fail to solicit advice or obtain it from the wrong sources, the leader and his vision suffer. By offering the broadest perspective on advice to date, Ciampa helps you avoid this scenario. He provides a topology of advice (strategic, operational, political, personal) and defines four types of advisors (expert, experienced, sounding board, partner). He also identifies the defining characteristics of effective advice takers—illustrating them with a wealth of examples from business, the public sector, and history.

Excellent Advice.......2007-03-08
This book is written for leaders who can often find themselves insulated and isolated. The bunker mentality is not generally conducive to good decision making, by the way.
Ciampa says that every leader should be an advice taker. And, different situations call for different kinds of advice. But all good advice takers share these characteristics:
* Skilled advice takers are deliberate in choosing the best type of help and in constructing a network of advisers.
* They manage that network actively, putting it high on their list of priorities.
* They work at building good relationships. To derive the most help from their advisers, they understand that they must take feedback without becoming defensive and, above all, listen with understanding.
* They seek advice and counsel quickly when faced with situations that can affect their plans. They also involve their advisers early in anticipating hindrances.
Every good advice taker has to be a good listener. It's important to be brave enough to select folks as advisers who are not "yes-men" -- and then listen, actually listen, to what is being said. Especially if it's not what you want to hear. That's leadership, regardless of your job title. That's also being open to growth and learning.
Hands-on counsel about getting the most from good advice........2006-11-23
Leaders must be accountable for their decisions, but the best leaders do not make the most important decisions alone. The right advice is a key condition for success, however, even the best advice will not be useful if the leader is not adept at using it. In this to-the-point book, author Dan Ciampa provides a unique service: a clear, practical framework for making the most of help from both inside and outside your organization, including selecting the right advisers and shaping a balanced advice network. We highly recommend this groundbreaking book for its usefulness and insights to every leader or aspiring leader...and that's advice you can take.
A GEM OF A BOOK ON A QUINTESSENTIAL TOPIC FOR LEADERSHIP SUCCESS!.......2006-09-23
As management consultants in organization and compensation, as well as management book reviewers, we are all-too keenly aware that the achilles heal of leaders is very often, their inability to seek, get and properly use good advice. This book addresses this need, by presenting critical, to-the-point insights into this quintessential leadership subject. To do so, it offers a framework for advice taking and an understanding of the attributes of great advice taking.
The core propositions of the author are:
1) actionable, timely and sustainable advice is essential to achieve organizational change;
2) it is the leader's responsibility to identify needs for advice and choose and use advisors wisely, and;
3) leaders must achieve the appropriate mindset to be good advice takers and master the skills to take maximum advantage of advice given them.
Among the nuggets in this book are rules and fundamental principles of advice taking, the four types of advice, and the attributes and abilities of a skilled advice taker. The book offers important insights into a subject that may seem a blatantly obvious dimension of leadership, but is often neglected, poorly understood, and taken for granted.
This book is a very important contribution to the essential literature on leadership. We highly recommended it all who are, or strive to become, leaders.
Not an area you see covered in management books..........2006-09-10
No one has all the answers when it comes to running a business, so it pays to have "experts" surrounding you to give you insight. There are plenty of books that cover the hows of giving advice, but there are far fewer (any?) titles that deal with how best to *take* that advice. Dan Ciampa covers an oft-neglected area in his book Taking Advice: How Leaders Get Good Counsel And Use It Wisely.
Contents: The Help Paradox; How Good Leaders Fail as Advice Takers; A New Framework for Advice Taking; Types of Advice - Strategic, Operational, Political, and Personal; Kinds of Advisors - Expert, Experienced, Sounding-Board, and Partner; The Art of Balance; Attitudes and Behavior of Great Advice Takers; Listening - the Master Skill - and Other Key Success Factors; Afterword - For Further Thought; Notes; Further Reading; Index; About the Author
It's not unusual to see leaders taking advice from a close friend or circle of insiders. What is more unusual is to see a leader pick a group of advisors that have specific roles and purposes in the advice-giving position. Ciampa breaks out the types of advice and the types of advisors that a leader will need, and then uses examples to show how these roles come into play. For instance, someone may be looking at moving into a new position at a company, and it's one they've wanted for a long time. The spouse might be uneasy about the change, and the person's current boss wonders if the new position is a wise choice. It's all too easy to tune out advice you don't want to hear, or to assign the wrong level of importance to the advice you *are* hearing. Recognizing the current boss has a vested interest to keep you is important, but they also see a side of you that includes things you overlook. Dismissing the spouse's concerns as "emotional" means overlooking insights from someone that sees you as a person rather than a position in a company. Using Ciampa's material in Taking Advice puts you on the right path towards building a solid advice team with specific roles, and will definitely help you learn how to effectively use that advice to be successful (even if it may not be what you want to hear)...
A worthy addition to the bookshelf of management at all levels...
