Like the one-time bestseller Jonathan Livingston Seagull, The Alchemist presents a simple fable, based on simple truths and places it in a highly unique situation. And though we may sniff a bestselling formula, it is certainly not a new one: even the ancient tribal storytellers knew that this is the most successful method of entertaining an audience while slipping in a lesson or two. Brazilian storyteller Paulo Coehlo introduces Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who one night dreams of a distant treasure in the Egyptian pyramids. And so he's off: leaving Spain to literally follow his dream.
Along the way he meets many spiritual messengers, who come in unassuming forms such as a camel driver and a well-read Englishman. In one of the Englishman's books, Santiago first learns about the alchemists--men who believed that if a metal were heated for many years, it would free itself of all its individual properties, and what was left would be the "Soul of the World." Of course he does eventually meet an alchemist, and the ensuing student-teacher relationship clarifies much of the boy's misguided agenda, while also emboldening him to stay true to his dreams. "My heart is afraid that it will have to suffer," the boy confides to the alchemist one night as they look up at a moonless night.
"Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself," the alchemist replies. "And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second's encounter with God and with eternity." --Gail Hudson
Book Description
Paulo Coelho's enchanting novel has inspired a devoted following around the world, and this tenth anniversary edition, with a new introduction from the author, will only increase that following. This story, dazzling in its powerful simplicity and inspiring wisdom, is about an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried in the Pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself king, and an alchemist, all of whom point Santiago in the direction of his quest. No one knows what the treasure is, or if Santiago will be able to surmount the obstacles along the way. But what starts out as a journey to find worldly goods turns into a discovery of the treasures found within. Lush, evocative, and deeply humane, the story of Santiago is an eternal testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our hearts.

My Heart Is Afraid that it will have to suffer," the boy told the alchemist one night as they looked up at the moonless sky."Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams."
Every few decades a book is published that changes the lives of its readers forever. The Alchemist is such a book. With over a million and a half copies sold around the world, The Alchemist has already established itself as a modern classic, universally admired. Paulo Coelho's charming fable, now available in English for the first time, will enchant and inspire an even wider audience of readers for generations to come.
The Alchemist is the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. From his home in Spain he journeys to the markets of Tangiers and across the Egyptian desert to a fateful encounter with the alchemist.
The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories have done, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams.

A keeper for the home library.......2007-09-11
This is a special book that makes an uplifting gift to someone wanting to seek their dream, but isn't sure to take that first step. I will read this again.
One of the most fascinating books.......2007-09-06
The Alchemist is an amazing book for anyone "searching for answers". It really reinforces the notion that it's all about the journey - not the destination. Well written and far more complex than the simple writing style might lead you to believe. This edition was a gift for a friend - it's beautiful to look at, as well.
Chasing dreams.......2007-08-23
A co-worker brought her copy of this book in one day for me to see. It was love at first sight and I knew I wanted my own copy. A month later, I bought one for myself on my birthday. I read it in two afternoons. It is a really good book. I would suggest it to anyone. It is very simple writing but the message is quite deep.
Just Okay.......2007-08-03
I liked THE ALCHEMIST, but didn't love it. It starts out very well, but it quickly gets bogged down by excessive symbolism and a lot of detail that didn't seem essential to the story.
The major point of this book is to pursue your life dreams, as opposed to making excuses for not doing so. I certainly support this message, but I felt that Coelho took 165 pages to convey a relatively straightforward point. This book is also heavily unrealistic in spots (the wind talks, the sun, etc.), which diminishes the power of its message, at least to me.
I read the most recent trade paperback edition of THE ALCHEMIST, and would suggest that you read the four-page introduction by Paulo Coelho before purchasing this novel. In that introduction, Coelho summarizes the main themes and ideas of THE ALCHEMIST in a crystal clear manner that I thought was more effective than the novel itself. If the message resonates with you, then by all means buy this book and enjoy it. Otherwise, you probably will not like it.
Yea, I'll add to the hype, but just look past it all........2007-07-31
No spoilers.
If you're reading these online reviews in order to determine if you'll like The Alchemist based off of what others thought about it, then you're probably a little confused right now. The best advice on this I can give is that if you read it and like it/love it like many people here, then obviously you'll be happy with your choice, but if you read it and don't like it/hate it, it's not a big deal because it's one of the shorter quality novels you'll ever come across at only 192 pages.
Having said that, I'm adding to the hype about this book by saying that I can't recall coming across novel with such presence and thought in such a simple form. One negative reviewer claimed reading this was like reading a high school book report, and the odd thing about that comment is, while I can see where a comment like that would come from due to simplicity of the writing style, the thoughts behind the words come from nothing less than a great thinker.
If you're skeptical about reading this book, please just ignore the reviews (I guess that would mean mine too :] ) and take the chance to do it for yourself. Will this book change your life? No. Is it the best most ispirational book ever written. Well that's subjective, but for me, no. It's just a great book to step away from your hectic world with for an evening (and believe me, you probably will finish this in an evening), so give it a try.

In The Four Agreements, Mexican shaman Miquel Ruiz built his teachings around four agreements: be impeccable with your word; don't take anything personally; don't make assumptions; always do your best. Now Ruiz offers readers a companion guide, making practical mysticism out of the ancient Toltec tradition. On the one hand this is an eloquent introduction to Toltec teachings, offering a fascinating discussion of how one's life is a dream (and a dream that's often dictated by others) and how "domestication" is the root of human suffering. On the other hand don Miquel has also written a Toltec self-help book, offering specific tools, exercises, and suggestions to help readers live their own dreams, become more attentive, and make conscious agreements with themselves. For readers who feel aligned with the Toltec tradition, this will certainly be a powerful ally as they begin the dream of transformation. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
The Four Agreements introduced a simple, but powerful code of conduct for attaining personal freedom and true happiness. Now The Four Agreements Companion Book takes you even further along the journey to recover the awareness and wisdom of your authentic self. This Companion Book is a must-read not only for those who enjoyed don Miguel's first book, but f or anyone who is ready to leave suffering behind, and to master the art of living in our natural state: happiness.

The Four Agreements Companion Book : Using the Four Agreements to Master the Dream of Your Life.......2007-08-24
This DEElightful book clarifies everything in the "Four Agreements" book, simplifing and making it much easier to remember what was learned...
I can't say enough to entice the reader into having this companion book, it's a must have...Rob Ward
Overkill.......2007-07-02
While I absolutely love the four agreements and return to the original book often, I found the companion book to be completely unnecessary. The writing style was poor and rambled in circles, constantly repeating itself. There was no new information at all. I seemed to me to be a way to get a little more money out of the concept - shocking considering the author.
I did enjoy the last few pages of personal examples from people who had incorporated the four agreements into their lives.
If you have the four agreements original book, you don't need this one and if you don't then skip this one and get the original.
Live life by the 4 agreements.......2007-05-14
My life was simplified by reading this book. It is a daily guide for me and my children now. Ruiz is a healer and a spiritual guide. Recommended for all ages.
A Practical Guide to Help Us Decode Our Emotional Garbage.......2004-08-26
After reading The Four Agreements, I felt that it is great to learn the four agreements ¡V be impeccable with your word, don¡¦t take anything personally, don¡¦t make assumptions and always try your best. However, that book did not have enough practical ideas or skills to guide me decode our old agreements/emotional garbage, how to be aware and how to transform. This book has a practical guide to teach us how to live in the four agreements. It teaches us how to become aware and how to transform.
1. Bring the Awareness to Surface so We Can Let Go of the Parasites, the Old Agreement, the Judge, the Victim, the fear
2. How to transform by the second attention (become aware and not act on or judge too fast), action-reaction, attach-detach
Don Miguel Ruiz has a very playful style of writing when he was telling us the above skills. I think in essence, the above skills suggests us to slow down our thinking process to give us enough time to steer our feelings and actions to apply the four agreements and to enjoy life intensely within the moment. His dialogue about the four agreements and other people¡¦s stories about applying the four agreements give me hope that I can live my life with what he has suggested. The dialogue helps us to decode certain emotional garbage and the dialogue helps me to break the old agreements. It is definitely a must-read if you have read the four agreements. Again, reading is not enough. However, putting the new adopted philosophies into everyday¡¦s life is the way to turn the dream of hell to become the dream of heaven.
A Must Have!.......2003-01-17
Anyone who has read his first book will definitely want to read this one as well. This book actually helps the reader to implement the Four Agreements into daily life. Very insightful and I wish I had read it forty years ago!

To listen to its proponents, network (or multilevel) marketing is the greatest thing since sliced bread: top performers earn $1 million a month, reside in alluring places like Aspen and Kauai, and still find quality time to happily raise children and lovingly cement spousal relationships. Contending that those who fail to make it that far are ill prepared for the initial challenges they face, Mark Yarnell and Rene Reid Yarnell--married network marketers who are among the industry's leaders, as well as members of a University of Illinois faculty that teaches the only college-certified course on the subject in the U.S.--have written Your First Year in Network Marketing: Overcome Your Fears, Experience Success, and Achieve Your Dreams! to convey both advice and inspiration to newcomers. Peppered with personal anecdotes that bring their recommendations to life, the two offer logical strategies for overcoming rookie obstacles and kick starting a career. Individual chapters explore issues such as battling rejection, avoiding depression, handling prospects, supervising recruits, and managing time. Each concludes with a comprehensive summary, but save it for later reference and don't skip the preceding narrative, or you risk missing the book's considerable motivational component. --Howard Rothman

Great Book.......2007-09-20
This book is really great for someone entering Network Marketing . . Easy to read . .
Same old stuff, different cover............2007-09-16
There are many books like this out there with the methods are out of date. Most successful network marketers build their fortune on the backs of others. There are some new twists on old approaches, the problem with most network marketing, MLM, multilevel marketing methods is the company's business model drives the behavior in the field and turns people into pushy, aggressive sales people, which causes huge failure in the industry.
[...].
A great way to get going.......2007-08-16

I only wish that I bought this book 18 months ago when I started with this wonderful MLM company I belong to. The insights of this industry are fully explained in this book along with stories that people in their organization have lived and learned through. Not only is the information useful and ready to be applied to your business but the inspiring stories are true examples that this industry works for those who work it. I absolutely recommend this book to anyone who is starting out in a MLM company and for anyone who is a veteran in MLM. I have recommended this book to my organization and everyone loves this book, too.
Must Have for the New Network Marketer.......2007-06-20
This book was a great resource for understanding the network marketing business. It helped to build my faith and become more confident in what I was doing. Great, easy to read and relate to information with real-life examples from some of the best in the business. If you're even thinking about getting into the industry I would read this book to see if network marketing is something you can committ to.

Deepak Chopra’s best-selling guide to creating abundance and prosperity is now on CD and read by the author. Based on seven natural laws that govern all creation, this book shatters the myth that success results only from hard work, exacting plans, and driving ambition. Deepak Chopra offers a life-altering perspective on attaining success: Once we understand our true nature and learn to live in harmony with these natural laws, well-being, good health, fulfilling relationships, energy and enthusiasm for life, and material abundance can be achieved. Simple yet profound, the book’s timeless wisdom and practical steps can be applied with surprisingly quick results. “A must-read for anyone who missed The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran.” — The New York Times
Customer Reviews:
A solid read for those embarking on the spiritual path.......2007-10-10
This book is a solid read for any person embarking on the path of self-discovery. It summarizes a group of spiritual laws that Chopra identifies as being key aspects in one's ability to fulfill their dreams. It essentially provides a foundation for further study as opposed to being a comprehensive self-help/development manual. One caution for anyone who is new to this "path," is that some of the content might be a bit farther out on the metaphysical curve than you've experienced previously, and particularly so if you're coming from a rather traditional religious perspective.
Feel Good.......2007-10-09
This a great, easy read. This is the type of book you can read over and over and you get something different from it every time. It's a great read for relieving stress and becoming inspired. I think everyone should read this book at least once.
An Idea That Did Not Need to Happen.......2007-10-05
When I purchased this book, I thought it was simply a new edition of the original book of the same title. After all, why would it be necessary to "ABRIDGE" a 111-page book? Anyway, I ordered 12 copies of it as I was using it for a class. Only too late did I discover it was a shortened version of the original masterpiece (and Amazon would not exchange it for what I wanted). I suppose the book was reissued in this format as part of a new marketing effort associated with the DVD movie of the same name.
Whatever the reason, there is no need to buy this instead of the original title --which is a jewel for anyone's library!
Original thoughts on "Science, Religion & Spirituality".......2007-10-02
Chopra is a master story teller and doctor by profession. He presents traditional eastern religious views in most of his writings. He hardly presents anything original. If you really like to seek the truth from religious and scientific point of view, I will recommend: "Science, Religion & Spirituality" which is now available on Amazon. Enjoy!

Everyone loves a good fable, and this is certainly one. The protagonist is Julian Mantle, a high-profile attorney with a whacked-out schedule and a shameful set of spiritual priorities. Of course it takes a crisis (heart attack) to give Mantle pause. And pause he does--suddenly selling all his beloved possessions to trek India in pursuit of a meaningful existence. The Himalayan gurus along the way give simple advice, such as, "What lies behind you and what lies before you is nothing compared to what lies within you." Yet it is easy to forgive the story's simplicity because each kernel of wisdom is framed to address the persistent angst of Western white-collar professionals. --Gail Hudson

Customer Reviews:
Weak, very weak........2007-09-23
This is terrible writing, at its best, marketed to the masses. The dialogue is so unreal. The characters, you can't even relate to them. It's so hokey, and nothing original. Unrealistic practices, rose meditation, c'mon, I'm to do this for two weeks. There are many, many other better books out there. Trying Being Peace by TNH.
Good luck, and if this book worked for you, great. I reviewed this in a positive mood too.........
This could be the best advice you'll ever receive from one book........2007-08-14
Enormous amount of wisdom is covered here. I finished this thinking that this is one of the best books I've ever read on how to live in this world. I was shocked at the amount of principles covered in this story. I just wasn't expecting what I got from this.
I initially refrained from underlining and marking up my book because I thought I might want to loan it out. So, I took notes. I've since decided that I'm gonna read it again and underline the great parts I want to revisit. Just when I thought this guy had covered most everything, he pulled out even more! This is an awesome book.
Okay, the other nice thing about this is each chapter ends with an action summary. I liked how this wraps up each chapter. So, you get the chance to think about what happened in the story, the points being made, and the great thing is it gives you the techniques.
I read a few reviews where people were criticizing the story. I thought the story was good, with a few weak spots. But the story isn't the main point, it was just the vehicle to deliver the goods.
I loved this book! This is one that I think can definately make a difference in your life. The thing about books like this is, usually people read it once, decide that there is something to it and maybe even make a few changes in their life and a little while later they slide right back into living the way they always have. Reread it, absorb it, and make lasting changes.
Amaizing.......2007-07-06
the situations described in this book reflects my situation in the company I use to work for: work, work, no personal life, filling guilty for a day off ( and that if you ever manage a day off).
it is really a inspiration.
Fun but fluffy.......2007-07-01
This is an easy afternoon read that is kind of enjoyable at first but gradually starts grinding away at your nerves. The story is, as another reviewer noted, both shallow and hackneyed....a rich guy has a health scare and changes his life's direction, blah blah blah....
Bottom line is that there are many many better books that will offer you deeper and more lasting insights into personal growth and enlightenment....one's that immediately come to mind are 'Autobiography of a Yoga' or 'Krishnamurti's notebook'. Come to think of it, pretty much anything by Krishnamurti, including his grocery list, is better written than this piece of fluff.
But, to be fair and "positive", the ideas within are not stupid ones....the problem is that they are blatantly obvious but presented in a breathy and falsely enthusiastic way that suggests that the author is trying (vainly) to turn a molehill into a mountain.
There's nothing wrong with trying to become a more spiritually healthy person, but I recommend that anyone who reads this book continue on to solid authors such as Krishnamurti or Paramahansa Yogananda,
for their works offer much deeper insight into serious life questions.
Good book -Worth reading........2007-06-27
This is a very light read. My spirits were uplifted after reading this book. So I would rate it 5 stars.
Mostly the author has drawn inspirations from Gita and other Vedic books either directly or indirectly but bottom line is that it is a good read.
Book Description
Jambo Fellow Adventurer!
Virtually everything in our society tells us, reminds us, and insists that we are limited, aging "creatures", who live lives between luck and fate, in a hard, unforgiving world... and sadly, many of us have believed it. The truth however, and this will likely ring true in your heart of hearts, is that we are INFINITE and POWERFUL... fun loving gladiators of the Universe; Adventurers just being human, with eternity before us, and the power of our thoughts to help shape it.
WE MAKE OUR OWN REALITIES, OUR OWN FATE AND OUR OWN LUCK... that, is how powerful we are... and that is how powerful YOU are. To offset all the contradictory thinking of the masses, YOU NEED TO HEAR THIS KIND OF MESSAGE as often as you have to hear all the others...
This is NOT a motivational audio program. It's more philosophical, and it's aimed at the "Truths of Being"; becoming aware of them, understanding them, and harnessing them. My aim throughout is to remind you of:
* how POWERFUL you are,
* HOW FAR you can reach, and
* how much you DESERVE...
... so that you can begin thriving as the giant you are, in a kingdom where you have indeed been given dominion over all things.
Blood, sweat and tears AREN'T what it takes to see your dreams come true, imagination, belief and expectation are what's needed... then you're drawn into action, circumstances and "coincidences" that make dream manifestation INEVITABLE. This isn't wishful thinking, it's the way things have always been in time and space. You don't need more education, more connections, or more lucky breaks... you just need to understand the principles and concepts that every prophet and messiah has shared since the beginning of time. Principles that have nothing to do with religion, but everything to do with the truth about who we are, why we're here, and the magic at our disposal.
Your dreams are not yours by accident. You have them for a reason, many reasons, not the least of which is to make them come true. Your dreams are what's meant to be... you just have to do your part... but that can be mighty tall order... when you DON'T fully understand what your part is, nor the processes that make dreams come true. With UNDERSTANDING however... you'll find that NOTHING COULD BE EASIER than the way things have always been.
Just look around you today at those who are so-called successes. Are they smarter than you? Are they more deserving than you? Have they paid greater dues than you? NO. NO. NO WAY. Whether through their intelligence, or ignorance, usually the latter but it DOESN'T matter, they're actually living in ways that ENGAGE life's principles so that the Universe begins serving them. The good news about this... is that such people are PROOF that ANYONE ELSE can do the same. But here you'll have an advantage... YOU'LL UNDERSTAND YOUR SUCCESSES and therefore won't have to live in fear that they could ever be taken away from you.
There is nothing you can't do, nothing you can't have, and nothing you can't be...
* You do have the power,
* You are guided, and
* the Universe IS conspiring on your behalf.
My series outlines dozens of principles that have been around since the beginning of time... principles that are now at play in your own life, whether you know what they are or not, and principles which are ridiculously easy to use. By identifying, understanding and harnessing them... you WILL access the power that literally turns wishes into reality, your wishes.
If someone told you the truth about life, reality and the powers you possessed... would you recognize it as the truth? If someone offered you the keys to the kingdom of your wildest dreams... would you accept them? Is there something in your heart, right now, that's telling you that just maybe, you could use and benefit from these simple recordings? I think there is.

You can have it all and more .......2007-09-05
You can live your dreams .this program is the best I have ever heard and I have heard them all! Mike Dooley is the best at making you realize that you CAN have it all. I LOVE this ! you will get more out of this than anything else you have ever listened to on making your dreams a reality!
Feedback.......2007-06-15
Well, I just want to say that the service that I receive from the TUT's team was wonderful, I received my package within 2 days (I live in Canada), and everything was fine. Also, I have to say that the content of these CDs is extremely interesting, dinamic and 100% practical. I've bought several other audio programs of this nature before (Tony Robbins, James Ray, Deepak Chopra, etc.) and, even thought all those audios are very interesting and practical too, they are not as good as "The Infinite Possibilities" of Mike dooley. He is not trying to attach you to any coach or spiritual leader and he don't want to make you spend more money. He just want to share his experience and wisdom with you and, I have to say, he do it succesfully in a wonderful way.
This product is highly recommended.
Joel.
Absolutely Amazing.......2007-05-31
This is the best audio program I have ever gotten my hands on, I have been researching this topic for some time now in my spiritual journey and the Universe led me straight to Mike Dooley's Infinate Possibilities: The Art of Living Your Dreams and it is perfect for anyone who has questions about life, stress, and anything else. Amazing!!
Absolutely Wonderfu and Effective!.......2007-05-29
I've read and listened to many "similar" materials. This is my favorate. I wonder why I didn't know about it earlier. The set of CD's has uplifted my spirit very effectively . And the many positive effects are lasting. I am extremely grateful to the author (Mike Dooley) and would like to meet him in person someday. I would also like to get to know his mother, a very wise and creative woman. The price for the CDs is actually very low.
The best I've seen on this subject.......2007-03-15
I have read a ton of books on this subject over the last 4 years or so about how we create our own reality, law of attraction, affirmations, etc. This is, by far, the best! Many authors tell you the "what" of the subject but not the "how" of it. Mike does both extremely well.
He will tell you the principle (or law if you want) and then he goes a step further than the others and that is he tells you exactly how to implement that principle. He gives totally down-to-earth recommendations using real-life situations that most people can relate to.
He also tells of his own experiences, what he wanted and then exactly what he did and how he did it to accomplish his intention. The issue I have always had is when most authors tell you that you must "act as if" your dream has become reality and that will bring the actuality of it into your life. And my question always has been "how in the heck am I supposed to do that when it just isn't the case?" Well, Mike answers that quite nicely with real-life examples on how to do exactly that! This morning I wrote up my list (a full page long) of everything that I can do to "act as if" based on his suggestions.
I feel more optimistic and enthusiastic about my dreams becoming a reality than I have in a VERY long time! And I've only gotten through 7 CD's so far!
He also has some extremely thought-provoking ideas about what "reality" really is (or isn't) that have really expanded how I am perceiving things. This program has also given me a lot of "ah-ha" moments (which I always find to be quite fun!) :-)
Anyways, whether you are new to the "law of attraction" principles or have spent the last few years studying the subject like I have, trust me, you will get A LOT out of this program! I only wish I would have bought it a couple years ago when I first heard about it. But that's okay, everything happens at the right time. When the student is ready, the teacher will appear!

Story Behind the Book
Craig Groeschel started LifeChurch.tv, now attended by more than twelve thousand people each weekend on five different campuses, in the Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, area in 1996. From that point on, he has been empowered by the knowledge that he is following God’s chazown (vision) for his life. Craig’s cutting-edge teaching styleâincluding honest, uncomfortable teaching of God’s truth and ubiquitous use of in-your-face video and other imageryâhas challenged and changed thousands of lives. His messages are simulcast live to each of the church’s campuses, and his ministry continues to explode. This book stems from a two-message series that he gave; its premise is the bedrock for all teaching and ministry at LifeChurch.tv.

Are you on target for God's purpose?.......2007-10-06
This book presents a great way to evaluate if you are seeking out God's purpose in your life and if you understand what his purpose is for your life. I'm not yet through with the book but so far it's great. I noticed it even comes with a cool DVD in the back.
I guess if you have no direction.......2007-08-22
in your life then this book is a God send. I found it interesting and was able to glean a few nuggets. I have no real negatives but wish it was a bit deeper and more profound. The Author does a good job at motivating through his stories and life experiences. What it lacks in BIG BANG it makes up for in sincerity.
Excellent outline for growth without relying on the outline itself.......2007-01-22
It is very difficult for an "outline" or "set of disciplines" book to not become a formula for growth work, which almost always results in the reader relying on the formula for growth instead of God and their love of and desire for God.
Groeschel avoids this mistake and has written a wonderfully clear and concise approach to achieving what you really want out of your life with the amazing thought that, wait for it, it might actually entail you taking this stuff seriously and making it a priority. What's amusing is that despite the fact that deep down we all know this, we either forget or disregard it. But Groeschel won't let you any longer.
The writing style is very conversational and light, which is why some individuals can correctly criticize the book for being a bit "surface-level" however this is not a book aimed at getting you to really contemplate and assess your beliefs but is more focused on equipping you to achieve an active growth through doing and planning.
In fact, planning for growth is the key message of this book, as the book's key verse echoes, if not screams, "Where there is no vision, the people perish (are unrestrained in other translations)," - Proverbs 29:18. I actually prefer the unrestrained translation because it hits closer to Groeschel's message, "Growth rarely, if never, happens by accident."
Great, Practical Advice!.......2007-01-02
I love the applications this book has. The quizzes and charts were really helpful in learning more about myself and where I best fit in. Definitely check this out.
Out of college whats next?.......2006-12-04
As a 27 year old collge graduate in the 3rd year of my profession, my thoughts began to wonder to what is next? Is my job all there is? Is there more to life? Is there more to the life I have been given? Chazown in simple yet profound language has given me a reason to look forward to each new day, and to not get bogged down in the monotony of everyday life, but to see life with a purpose, my OWN individual purpose that only I was created and put on this earth for.
Pastor Craig has delivered an awesome book on vision and purpose in life, but also has the tools nevessary to help us whether it is the online journal, or DVDs' that help us in finances, physical fitness, or relationships, this is one book that covers it all. I had read the Purpose Driven Life and thought it was alot of fluff, but Chazown not only had spiritual insight into the purpose God has for me, but also has the tools ( Life Development Plan found at [...] ) to help me determine and fullfill God's chazown for MY life.
Book Description
This is the only book that gives homeowners who are dreaming about building or planning to build a new home the good and the bad on all types of prefabricated houses. Shows that prefabricated can be mainstream traditional design and does not have to look like a mobile home or a modular "Dwell" box.
Prefabulous describes the many systems available for prefabricating all or parts of a new home, including timber frame and log, as well as modular, panelized, structural insulated panels, steel framing and concrete systems, which are relatively new. Prefabulous describes these systems, compares their advantages and disadvantages, and shows beautiful examples of houses built using these techniques. Although all of these "prefabricated" houses look very different, all of them were manufactured partially or almost completely in a controlled factory environment and transported to the home site to be erected. As a group these systems offer a faster, more energy-efficient, and sometimes more cost-efficient method of building.
Includes a foreword by Not So Big House author Sarah Susanka, who writes: "For homeowners who want to know the options, the advantages and disadvantages of those options, and to see how those prefabricated parts come together into a good, attractive home, read this book."

Prefabulous.......2007-09-20
Very informative book. A must read for anyone thinking of building an upscale prefab house.
Fabulous is right!.......2007-08-24
Sheri Koones has done another remarkable job showing the benefits and cusomization capabilities of systems-built homes. The press has made 'pre-fab' a common term over the last few years, and this book helps to showcase the many types of quality, code-compliant, factory built homes. As Executive Director of the Building Systems Councils at the National Association of Home Builders, I know many of our members own copies of this book and are proud to see systems-built homes get the recognition they deserve for being such great ways to build. The book is extremely well done, outlining the types, options, floorplans, and design choices of systems-built homes. There is no other book like it.
Long on promise, short on substance.......2007-08-23
I purchased this book along with another book about "modular" homes by the same author titled "Modular Mansions". I am terribly disappointed by both the books and I am leaving this same exact review for the other book as well.
The book is nothing more than pretty pictures. It offers very little in substance. While the book does profile several large houses constructed in a modular fashion, the author seem to have neither the inclination nor the construction background to discuss the meat and potatoes issues. The book is sprinkled with platitudes and how various home owners chose to decorate their homes. I would have liked to see discussions about how the actual construction was accomplished, what the pitfalls have been, some rudimentary floor plans etc. An in-depth profile of at least one of the houses including perhaps a sit-down with the architect as to how the pieces fit together would have been better than the sheer fluff that fills the pages.
It seems the author was exposed to the modular way of building homes rather by accident and while she seems genuinely enthusiastic about this method, she does not possess proper education/training/experience to guide a reader properly. Instead, she chose to produce this coffee table book that is pretty to look at but offers little else. I was suckered by the promise of modular homes into ordering both the "coffee table" books by this author at the same time and both are equally disappointing.
Modular type of construction does offer some promise in very specific cases for an educated home owner/builder that can take advantage of the efficiencies of this method while avoiding the various pitfalls. But do not buy these books expecting to be educated. You are better of researching somewhere else where true professionals offer advice in this area.
Extraordinary Approach To Housing.......2007-07-23
I had no idea factory built homes existed at anything close to this level of detail, craftsmanship, beauty, variety, durability and more.
This is an excellent book which incorporates all the major types of factory built homes outside of manufactured homes and mobile homes. I now have an entirely new perspective on the current and future state of housing in our country, especially here in Miami, Florida.
As a result of this tremendous "discovery," I am putting together a team of dedicated professionals to assess the viability of the construction applications (residential, commercial and otherwise) featured in this book for the South Florida market.
Every one of my colleagues, friends, family and others have been absolutely amazed at the contents of this book.
You will not be disappointed with this outstanding piece of work even if you employ its use for educational or edification purposes only, or just as a conversation piece for your coffee table.
FAB.......2007-06-08
This book is very helpful in learning about the different choices you have for building. Worth buying if you are looking for something besides standard stick built house.

Excellent resource when researching builders.......2006-06-06
I purchased this book as part of my research during escrow on a lot where we plan to build a vacation/retirement home. Even though we would likely not serve as general contractor the information inside is invaluable. It has helped me to understand the right questions to ask during escrow (from surveyors to septic to view to laterals) to ensure the lot, county and sub-division will allow the home we envision. The chapters on foundation, windows, doors, etc are all extremely helpful when it gets down to desiging the home. I'll know what to look out for with the interior and exterior design, drainage and when dealing with the builder.
I skimmed most of the book in about an hour and came away with two pages of notes which will undoubtably be greatly extended when I sit down and read in detail. There's so much great information that it really takes two passes.
That said, the illustrations are a bit primitive and I found some of them hard to understand. Also, an update to include smart home/home theater considerations would be a welcome addition. For those iterested, I've found some of the "XYZ for Dummys" books to fill that gap.
Recommended.
Great book!.......2006-02-28
Covering all of the main topics, this book on homebuilding is a must have for any person intent on building his or her dream home. I keep it with me all of the time for easy referral.
Voice of experience--good advice.......2002-07-05
The best part of this book is its easygoing style. Written seemingly entirely from memory, you'll understand and remember every word. The author skips the commonly available info and writes about the crucial nuts-and-bolts problems of building a house: what do you do if you've drilled a hundred foot well and come up dry? (Keep drilling.) His advice on some details, vapor barriers for example, is OK but you'll want to check the latest thinking on the topic too. Some harmless misinformation is passed along, like that Palladio, eponym for those short-tall-short windows, "invented" them. (He may have invented residential architecture, but those windows date to antiquity. In his day they were known as serliana, after the architect Sebastiano Serlio.) The scientific explanations fall a bit short, and the chapter where he disparages Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's engineering does not show him in a good light. However he does caution you that drywallers, more than any other trade, will try to rip you off with a high materials estimate. Stuff like that you can't get anywhere else.
Great first source.......2002-01-12
If you want to have a house built, this is a great book to start with. The author is a general contractor who has seen it all and wants to educate readers about the building process. His intention is to prevent others from the pitfalls and scams of building, and simultaneously he explains the science behind plumbing, electricity, sewarage, insulation etc. He also discusses the attitudes and scams of subcontractors and local bureaucrats. This is not a how-to book; the purpose is to educate you enough so that you know what questions to ask as your house goes up.
He begins with purchasing the land and ends with the final detailing of the house. He includes interesting anecdotes to make his points. I was impressed his ability to go from the abstract to simple things usually overlooked. Although I was lost in the section on laying the foundation, the book was written simply, and is easy to follow.
My only criticisms are limited. There are occasional typing errors (I'm an English teacher) and a need for a few more illustrations. The author can also be opininated about his person tastes in decor and such, but I found that to be humorous and endearing. Finally, I don't think the book is titled incorrectly. Yes, you should read it if you want to be your own gerneral contractor. But I think this book is more about the risk involved in doing that. After 20 pages, I was convinced I would definately want a general contractor.
Had a lot of useful tips, but lacked a few key areas.......2001-12-05
I would actually give it 4 1/2 stars if I was able. The book had many useful tips concerning windows, framing and insulating to produce an energy efficient house. It also had tips for hanging drywall, planning lighting and measuring techniques, as well as tips for dealing with contractors and inspectors; all of which are helpful. The authors distaste for basements leads to an absense of information on poured basements which are the standard in my area. He continually pushed slab houses and only had block wall basements as an example. This was disappointing. Not being a plumber, I also would have liked more information on tapping into city sewer and water and into gas lines. Most of his examples were of a septic system and well. The book was not edited well, as it had many spelling errors. If you are not looking for a novel, this should not bother you much because the information in the book is simple and very benificial. It is well worth the purchase price and should save you a lot of money and headaches if you decide to build your own house.

absolutely amazing.......2007-06-13
This is an amazing book! While most people may not be able to re-create these parties, you can definitely get ideas from all of them. Take the ideas here and apply them to one or two tables or a small area. The pictures are wonderful and I am amazed at what is done in some of these parties. Would love to have a chance just to walk through one of these!!!!
Very Inspiring.......2007-01-11
I love this book. The themes and pictures are great. It's more for the higher end weddings
Entertaining with a flair.......2006-11-30
Subtitled: Inspiration for Creating the Party of Your Dreams
Worried about the upcoming holiday party you have to plan? You (and all your friends) know what Martha would do but it's time to shake things up. The problem is you aren't sure where to start.
Luckily for you, Inspirations by Preston Bailey is available. Preston Bailey is a well-known event planner for Hollywood stars. Recently, he's worked on Oprah's fiftieth birthday celebration and Donald and Melania's wedding celebration.
Ten parties, eight of which are weddings, are photographed and discussed in this book. Locations include Niagra Falls, a Virginia stable that is converted into a wedding chapel and the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Each chapter celebrates a different theme. Yes, there are eight weddings covered but each wedding has its own theme, color scheme and something unique to offer. The last chapter provides ways to organize and showcase your dining table.
This book dazzles with its full-size color photographs. It celebrates colors, flowers and the unexpected. Reading this book was a great way to spend a rainy afternoon as there are a lot of things to ooh and aah over. Two of my favorite are pineapples made out of sunflowers and a dog made out of dogwood flowers.
Bailey's philosophy is you aren't just throwing a party, you are creating a theatrical event for your guests. It's important to pay attention to the details so your guests will know they are in for a wonderful, magical night. Some examples of small but important details that Bailey uses are: a wedding menu made out of edible chocolate, displaying sculptures that support the party's theme and embellishing cloth napkins with silk roses.
This book is not a "how to" because there aren't any step-by-step instructions. Rather, it's designed to be a "how about this idea" book. It's a peek into Bailey's creative process.
Bailey finds inspiration in nature, artwork and the various cities he has visited. He doesn't want you to simply copy his ideas but he wants you to use this book as a springboard for your imagination and personal style.
Armchair Interview says feeling ambitious and daring? Incorporate Bailey's suggestions into your celebrations.
Very Inspiring.......2006-07-17
This book is certainly not a how to book. It is most definately a coffee table book showing off the talents of Mr. Bailey & his design team.
They are very good at what they do.
I use this book as my design inspirational bible and have produced some great, one of a kind arrangements for weddings and parties.
It is a pity that the author decided against sharing his knowledge. This book could have been a great best seller had he offered up some basic design techniques.
Though I love the book, everytime I thumb through it, I ask myself - who was the intended audience?
