For nine years, four books, and nearly 4,000 pages, Diana Gabaldon has entranced readers with her talent for historical authenticity, dramatic plot lines, and strong characters in the Outlander series. Her superb writing has earned a loyal audience, but after a million and a half words, even the most fervent of fans may have a difficult time trying to recall the exact details of the secondary characters, let alone the obscure ones. Thankfully, Gabaldon's The Outlandish Companion is here to help.
Part crib notes and part trivia guide, this essential handbook includes synopses of the first four novels, a character guide, notes on plot development and research, answers to frequently asked questions, and teasers for the upcoming novels--there're even horoscope charts of the central characters, a list of fan Web sites, and choice recipes for the truly devoted.
Readers looking for a fix of Gabaldon's humorous voice or insight into her writing processes and characters will certainly be more than satisfied, but those looking for the next installment of Jamie and Claire's adventures will have to wait for The Fiery Cross, the fifth book in this bestselling series, expected sometime in late 1999 to early 2000. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

Great Series---read the others!.......2007-08-27
I have enjoyed this series and particularly like this one as it gives alot of details about Scotland...
Gabaldon's work revisited........2007-08-23
I almost enjoyed this book as much as the series books themselves. It brought back so many wonderful points I'd enjoyed and forgotten about, questions remaining to be answered, thoughts of other readers that enjoyed the series as much as I did. This is a great gift for anyone that's read (and looks forward to perhaps more) Gabaldon's Outlander series.
Outlander .......2007-06-14
This book is excellent. It helps you to remember back to previous books in the Outlander Series. It even has Claire and Jamie's astological tree.
Buy it and you will be pleased. Megan Sutherland Newcastle, Australia
Revealing Glimpse Into the Mind of a Writer.......2007-05-04
When author Diane Gabaldon published her first novel, "Outlander" in the early 1990s, she had no inkling of the phenomenon she would create. Her characters, Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser and Jamie Fraser have appeared in a dozen different languages and millions of volumes. This delightful book is a glimpse into the creative process. Gabaldon reveals her inspiration for Jamie (a character on Dr. Who); she discusses her methods of research, devotes an entire chapter to correcting mistakes in various volumes and includes some fascinating exchanges with readers and critics. Breezy, light hearted and downright fun, the book is an absolute necessity to fans of Claire and Jamie. Th reader is treated to Gabaldon's theories about the purpose of writing and character development. She freely admits that she has no idea where a story will end up when she begins. The first book, "Outlander" was just an experiment to teach her how to write. Originally, Gabaldon planned to write a pure historical novel, but when her heroine, Claire Beauchamp stubbornly insisted on speaking twentieth century slang, Gabaldon had to create a way for Claire to appear in 18th century Scotland while sounding like a modern, independent woman. Thus, Gabaldon hit upon the time travel device. It is a unique pleasure to read the answers to the many questions that a reader can develop about a beloved series and characters.
Looking for a Little Extra?..........2007-04-04
This book is all about the extra little things you missed, never got or wanted more of in Gabaldon's novel series Outlander. The introduction is informative, enjoyable, page-turning and rather quirky in its explanation of Outlander's birth and much of the book is the same in its behind-the-creation of favorite characters; although she can go overboard with side characters that she attempts to highlight when she didn't do so in the series itself and the horoscopes of Jamie and Claire are clearly for fun alone since they only add to what any Outlander fan already knows about them. The best parts of The Companion are the language translations and pronunciations (Gaelic anyone?) of Gabaldon's bi-lingual characters' diction and the excerpts chapters that reveal future books for the Outlander series--You have to read Surgeon's Steel! The anticipation of where she's going with that little snip-it is killing me!
Defintely a must read, but not necessarily a must own since The Companion was written before her latest book: A Breath of Snow and Ashes was released, so theres nothing in it about that book and her website hints at two more books to complete the series which will leave The Companion throughly out of date for any of us who are waiting for something new.

and much more. With sample forms, work sheets, and more, this sophisticated but accessible book covers:

- Who does what: the real estate agent, lender, title company, closing officer, attorney

Customer Reviews:
Could be better.......2006-03-22
Very good book; could have gone a little deeper into the mechanics of the closing process.
Practical, Real-World, Current Information.......2005-10-10
This book is an easy to read, step-by-step guide through that 'magical' period called 'Escrow.' Explanations are easy to understand yet thorough. I highly recommend this book.
Complete and Easy to Read........2005-01-11
Sandy Gadow's real estate closing book explained the part of the buying process which confuses most people, and where most of the costly mistakes can occur. I was able to understand the concepts and explanations which are provided, and felt confident enough to ask questions which I am sure saved me several hundreds of dollars. Before reading Sandy's book, I was intimidated by the professionals involved in a closing: for example, the attorney and closing agent, even the inspector involved. Knowing what questions to ask, I felt comfortable making lists of questions to ask, and which answers I needed. Although real estate laws vary state to state, this book does an excellent job of being all-inclusive for each state. Whether called "escrow", "closing" or "settlement", this book covers the essentials of a real estate deal.
In each chapter are "Tips" and "A Typical Misunderstanding" which lighten the reading and make the subject matter easy to follow along. The chapter on handling Tax-Deferred Exchanges was a welcome addition to the book. I was prompted to buy Sandy's book after watching her on CNN's show, "Open House."
I would recommend this book to anyone buying property, considering entering the escrow profession, or anyone interested in the investment aspect of real estate. I am now a real estate professional and am grateful for Sandy's book. I know the book helped me and I have recommended it to many of my friends and colleagues.
Good book, but...........2005-01-04
...it's the same book as her previous books - only the title has changed. If there were any minor editing done to the book, I didn't notice. If you've read or purchased one of her previous books don't waste your time or money.
Truth in Advertising.......2004-11-08
Gadow does an excellent job of providing a comprehensive view of a California Real Estate Closing. The subject matter is appropriate and well written. The illustrations, tables, charts and forms all useful. The only real problem with a volume like this is that all real estate is essentially LOCAL in nature.
Thus, many of Gadow's points and concepts are inapposite to other parts of the country. I found myself annotating my copy with local exceptions to Gadow's statements (I am a Real Estate Attorney in the Washington, DC metropolitan area). As with any volume with this much information there are certain errors that may have not been caught by the editors. For example, Gadow talks about obtaining multiple termite inspections. "Shopping for a clean termite inspection" and failing to disclose the known existence of termites is a patent violation of the Seller's duty to disclose known defects and could subject the homeseller to serious liability for any resulting damages incurred by the buyer.
Nevertheless, for the layman this book is an essential resource and I wish everyone of my clients would read it before coming to our office for their settlements.
Book Description
Authoritative, accessible, and engaging, here is a new reference from The New York Times, a comprehensive, nearly 700-page bible of all the garden news that's fit to print. Based on "Gardeners Q&A." the enormously popular syndicated column, 1000 Gardening Questions and Answers is like a passionate conversation between gardeners and gardening experts. Every week readers from around the country send in their most vexing problems--how to divide perennials, prune raspberry canes, grow basil that really tastes like basil, get rid of earwigs, find long-lost varieties of flowers, keep honeysuckle under control--and every week, the authorities at the Times write a column full of answers.
Carefully selected, updated, and expanded by Leslie Land, one of the column's two authors, here are 1,000 Q&As that add up to an informal encyclopedia of gardening knowledge. The book covers flowers, trees, shrubs, the lawn, vegetables, herbs, fruit, indoor plants, soil, pests, and troublemakers. It addresses problems and provides answers to difficulties in every North American zone. Hundreds of line drawings illustrate the book, providing botanical identification and demonstrating how-to gardening techniques. In addition, sidebars throughout supply supplemental information--"Dos and Don'ts of Deadheading," "Annuals that Beat the Heat," "To Prune or Not to Prune: The Clematis Question," "Air Layering," "Windowsill Bonsai"--plus quirky facts, trivia, lore, and myth. It's big, it's got heft, it's filled to the brim with information. And it's so lively, it reads like a novel--and belongs on every gardener's potting bench and bedside table.

The New York Times 1000 Gardening Questions and Answers: Based on the New York Times Column "Garden Q & A.".......2007-07-15
Great book for any gardener will help me a lot to have a beautiful and healthy garden.
Excellent Gardening Resource, high recommend.......2006-06-21
I love to cook, and I decided to try my hand at gardening to see if I could grow some of our food. Needless to say, I had no idea what I was doing. I found this book at Smith and Hawken and it and helped me to obtain reasonable results the first year. My garden now grows a little more each year. I turn to this book regularly, when I am planning on expanding my garden or troubleshooting.
The book is subdivided as follows:
1. The Flower Garden
2. The Landscape Garden
3. The Kitchen Garden
4. The Potted Garden
5. Garden Keeping
The Flower Garden deals with annuals, perennials, roses and bulbs. Plants that bloom in the spring, summer, fall and then fade back in the winter.
The Landscape Garden will answer questions about the bigger picture it covers: ground cover, lawns, shrubs, trees and vines. The chapter also covers path materials and garden design.
The Kitchen Garden provides information about fruits, vegetables and herbs.
The Potted Garden covers indoor and outdoor container gardening.
In Garden Keeping they cover soil, compost, mulch, fertility and disease and pest control.
The index in the back of this book is very well done. I have found answers to 95% of the questions that I had. The book is weak on organic gardening. If that topic is of special interest to you (as it is to me), I suggest you buy another book on that topic alone.
Overall, I have been pleased with the information available in this book. It has allowed me to grow a fabulous herb garden, and a nice vegetable garden. It has also provided me with enough information to keep a Meyer lemon tree alive and producing fruit for two years. I would recommend this book to anyone that that is interested in gardening.
Everything You Wanted to Know About Garddening in the NE.......2004-01-10
This is an easy to read, practical guide to everyday gardening questions, with lots of specifics, reference materials, and explanations. The index is massive, the research is thorough, and the subject matter will strike a chord with every true gardener. I highly recommend this book to help answer the mysteries that seem to crop up every year in a northeastern garden.
A title which lends to leisure browsing as much as reference.......2003-06-17
With its question/answer format and a blending of information gleaned from over a decade of New York Time's gardening column, The New York Times 1000 Gardening Questions And Answers: Based On The Column "Gardeners Q. & A" gathers the questions of avid gardeners and the experiences and advice of gardening professionals under one cover. Add a chatty tone to their answers, which goes into more than just a few lines of detail, and an organization by type of plant, and you have a title which lends to leisure browsing as much as reference.

Buying a home requires skill in a variety of areas. There's negotiating, financing, inspecting a home, and understanding legal contracts. It's really too much for most people to do by themselves, which, as you know by now, is why most of us pay good money to hire real estate agents, mortgage brokers, home inspectors, and other professionals to help with the process. But that doesn't remove the buyer from the role of project manager, whose job is to understand what each specialist is meant to do and recognize when one of those key players is not doing his or her job right. Books such as 100 Questions Every First-Time Home Buyer Should Ask help the novice gain a solid understanding of the basics involved in this often complex process. The questions in this second edition of author Ilyce R. Glink's book also make buyers think about their decisions. If you want to buy an older home, for example, do you understand that older windows may need caulking or new sashes, that bathroom tiles may need regrouting, and that an older home may need rewiring, a new hot water heater, or a new furnace right away? Other questions range from the routine (How much can I afford? How do I make an offer?) to some that are hard to anticipate (What if the seller wants to stay in the house after the closing? Who should attend the closing?). Chapters are devoted to key topics, including figuring out what kind of house you want (this effort starts with a "wish list" and improves with a "reality check"), knowing what you can afford, putting together and negotiating a deal, financing your home, closing on the deal, and then doing what it takes to live happily ever after. Of course, living happily ever after requires understanding when it's time to move on to your next home, a process that may find you dusting off this book in the coming years. --John Russell

Perfect for first time buyers.......2007-08-13
I loved this book. It really helped me and my hubbie make sound decisions on what we wanted and needed. A great read if you take the time to prepare before big purchases.
AWESOME BOOK!.......2007-01-12
My husband and I bought this book because we were interested in buying a home and had never been through the process before. This book was so informative! We learned all kinds of things to do and not to do. This book is a must if you have never bought a home before!
Worth every penny.......2007-01-12
This book was my bible during my home purchase. It answers all kinds of questions. Very Helpful. If you are going to buy a home, buy this book.
Complete look at the daunting process.......2006-11-10
Covers many/most of the issues of importance. Only bummer is that since laws vary by state a few things didn't apply directly, would have been nice to get a warning to this effect.
Great first-timer resource.......2006-09-04
Some things are easier learned through personal experience. Can't tell the same about home buying. Had a couple of friends tell me about their experiences buying homes, and still have learned a lot of great info on the subject.

The Billy Graham Training Center Bible is a valuable resource that guides you to discover what the Bible says about anger, forgiveness, grief, marriage, peace, salvation, suffering, and temptation - more than 100 time-tested answers to your toughest questions from over 50 years of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association's ministry.
Customer Reviews:
HAVE A QUESTION? FIND THE ANSWER!.......2007-09-11
Truely amazing bible. Tough questions from everyday life situations answered in the way one would expect if actually talking with Billy Graham. Easy to read and understand, makes finding answers to common questions a breeze. A must have for all Christians.
Excellent NKJV bible!.......2005-11-12
I just received this bible and upon review I have to say it is of very good quality. There is very, very little bleed through of other words on a page which is important because I have trouble reading bibles printed on thin paper. I find bleed through highly distracting. The pages are very easy to turn because of the thicker paper.
Also the type size is very good, I usually read larger print, but this one is very acceptable because the verses are well spread out with meaing there is more space between each sentence, in other words, the verses aren't all smashed together like some bibles I've owned and sold. This also makes for less eye strain and faster reading.
I've owned and do own many bibles, and will have to say that Billy Graham's notes are to the point and easy to understand which can be highly appreciated if you are somewhat confused about some bibles lengthy discussions on theology. It's to the point Christianity in a nutshell!
Another good point about this bible is that the concordance is substantial. On the downside, this bible could have had references in it, that would have made it awesome. But I give it 5 points anyway because I'm so impressed with the thicker paper, minimal bleed through, large concordance and the short and to the point reference material by Billy Graham.
I own the NAS, NIV, NASB, AMP, NLT, GNT, ESV and the KJV and I purchased this one last because of all the bad reports I have heard about it being a poor translation. I have done research on the background of the manuscripts they have chosen, both good and bad research, and am still eager to read it as my sample readings have been very enjoyable. I used to be bent on just picking one translation, the best one, but in many years of studying them all and researching the critics, I have found that none of them is perfect. So I have decided to use several of them to get a grasp on God's word more clearly when I sit for serious study. Since doing so, I have really been blessed. God does protect his word despite man's attempts to develop the "best" translation. Good luck and God Bless.
Billy Graham Training Center Bible.......2005-10-17
I love this Bible. I highly recommend it for anyone seriously considering a Bible. It answers tough questions with love and biblical insight; it is a true blessing in a world sadly devoid of blessings. You can do worse.
billy graham bible.......2005-09-14
the product was of top quality the shipment of the product was timely
Excellent for Daily Reading.......2005-02-25
I was looking for a good NKJV and decided on this one. For daily reading this is an excellent choice. This is not a "study" bible. However, the extra features are more than enough to get a solid foundation of Christian helps, principles and "how-to's". The type, while not extra-large, is large enough for easy reading. I inserted this book in a bible bag. This bible does not present itself as a "Billy Graham" book as much as it does a very good NKJV Bible.

Bigoted, Biased Ballyhoo!.......2006-07-25
I would really like to know if Ms. Moore actually believes what she wrote, or simply did it for the money. Either way, the book is shameful and filled with inaccuracies, inuendo, half-truths and fabrications. If You Lived at the Time of the Civil War is a shining example of Political Correctness at its finest. Don't waste your money.
Don't Waste Your Money.......2006-05-02
on this book, unless you wish to follow the mindless politically correct rewritten version of history that you find pretty much everywhere these days. I am a teacher, a historian, and a woman whose ancestors fought proudly for the Union Army. That said, I recognize this book for what it is. If you're really looking for something historically accurate, then you would better spend your money on books which detail - even for this age group - the War Between the States in much more realistic and honest terms. They are out there. Though I'm not quite as passionate as some of the reviewers below, I agree with their sentiment entirely. This book is simply fluff with almost no historical value - actually, it's worse than that, because it does perpetuate false stereotypes. It's especially bad because it's done in the guise of educational fiction. Shame on Scholastic.
Unrealistic book.......2005-06-20
While I will concede that the book is an easy read, it does talk down to the child and the book constantly contradicts itself.
One example from the book:
Women and children in the South were not use to doing things for themselves. Then showing children with barefoot.
If a child is rich enough to not "do" for himself he would not be barefoot as only poor people were barefooted in those days.
Secondly very few people in the South actually owned slaves, something the book doesn't make clear.
The issue for many Southerners wasn't slavery as much as taxes.
Like a pervious reviewer I wish the book covered Sherman's march to Sea which an effort by the Union Army to just target the Southern Civilian population.
I also wish the book was be more accurate and stated that the Northern Army didn't treat former slaves well either.
The sad part that the book didn't bring out was the fact that during reconstruction there was little to no schooling allowed for children whose fathers served in the Rebel Army.
Shameful.......2005-06-13
This book IF YOU does not give the actual facts of why the Civil War was fought, such as the South was tired of paying unfair taxes, coastal water monopolies (by the North) and tariffs.
The IF You book goes with the party line of the South fought to keep slaves. Slavery while an issue of the Civil War wasn't a major issue; in fact some of the largest slave holders in the South were against secession as they felt slavery would be held safer in the Union then outside the Union [Even Lincoln wrote that Slavery would be held safer in the Union then outside the Union where the states who seceded would lose all constitutional guarantees).
Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in hopes of starting slave revolts in the South (interesting note the Emancipation Proclamation was only for those slaves in the Confederate states it did not apply to the four Northern states that had slaves or to Southern states that were under Northern control).
The book makes the Southerners look like murdering thieves while the Union come across as the fighters for justice, it totally overlooks W.T.Sherman's march to the sea which was a war against the unarmed civilian population of the South particularly women and children who were thrown out of their houses in the dead of winter without their clothes on by the Northern troops, in many cases ganged raped and left without food to starve.
The justification of such treatment towards noncombantants was that the South started the war however, it leaves out the fact that women and children in that time era had no rights and were without a voice. Women couldn't vote, weren't allowed to work, could not serve on jury duty etc.
I found this book very uninformative and full of misleading information.
Great kids book with nice illustrations........2004-01-08
All of the "If you Lived at the Time of..." books are great for kids, and also a nice, quick read for adults! What I like about them is their layout, which is easy for readers to follow. Each page begins with a question, "Would you have seen a battle in the South?" for example. Nicely drawn illustrations accompany each answer. The book itself is small and lightweight enough to be handled easily by kids. Issues between the North and South are explained simply and, I believe, fairly.

So, if you want to know whether the are any one-eyed animals or why a magnet loses its power overtime, where dust comes from or why bruises change color, what makes a Mexican jumping bean jump or why spoiled cans of food swell, then this is the book for you. It's a must-read, fact-filled, fun reference for readers of all ages, be it a science enthusiast or just someone who isn't afraid to ask life's most unconventional questions.

all the questions answered that you were afraid to ask.......2002-06-13
As a science teacher, I always have to be prepared to answer questions from left field. This book has many of the commonly asked questions that you won't find in a textbook. It's well wriiten and easy to understand--and entertaining too!

Book Description
For many believers, the subject of the End Times stirs confusion, apprehension, and dread. No longer! This user-friendly manual answers 101 of the most frequently asked questions about everything from the Pre-Tribulation Rapture, the Antichrist, and Tribulation to the Second Coming and the Millennium. Prophecy expert Mark Hitchcock offers a biblically authoritative resource for understanding God's plan and a reason for peace instead of anxiety about each believer's role in it.
âThe End Is Near!’
Or is it? The Antichrist is alive and well today! Or is he? The church is about to be raptured and will certainly escape the tribulation.... right?
When it comes to the End Times, there’s so much confusion. Preachers with elaborate charts share their theories about Revelation and other prophetic books of the Bible. âAh, Babylon stands for the United States ,â they say. But then other teachers share their theories: âNo, Babylon stands for the Roman Catholic Church, or the European Union, or the literal Babylon rebuilt in Iraq â¦.â
Would somebody please shoot straight with me?
Finally, someone has. Gifted scholar and pastor Mark Hitchcock walks you gently through Bible prophecy in an engaging, user-friendly style. Hitchcock’s careful examination of the topic will leave you feeling informed and balanced in your understanding of events to comeâ¦in our time?

The end of the world is a much discussed subject..........2004-03-06
but many authors have trouble putting into terms that the everyday non-Bible Scholar can understand with ease. Mark Hitchcock does just that. If you've asked it, it's probably in here. Hitchcock provides a Biblical basis for every provided answer, and has you more excited about the rapture by the time you reach the final pages than you have been before! Highly recommended.
the greatest endime book of all times.......2003-08-13
This would be the greatest endtime book of all times. Mark Hitchcock goes to great lengths to inform the readers about the endtimes. He has given much time in prayer and research to provide all sources of idea's and other points of view.
I began to read this book and before long I found myself marking it and taking notes. It pages are filled with so much wisdom.
As a minister of a diffrent demonination I had a couple minor things I did not agree with. However, this did not stop me from reading this amazing book. I would recommend everyone who reads this review to buy the book and share it with loved ones. "he that hath an ear, let him hear what the spirit has to say to the churchs....." REV 2:7
Great book for study and clarification........2003-02-24
I have read many books dealing with End-Time Prophecy. This author takes great care in developing an issue, then offering alternate points from other Bible students. He comments on each one with his own interpretation and then provides numbered reasons for his stand. On issues where there remains no clear answer in the Bible, he so states that position along with his opinion. I enjoyed this easy-to-read book.
1 of THE BEST!.......2001-08-20
Mark really did an, 'A+' job here and I can say that because I've read about 25 end-time books. His organization is just SUPERB and user-friendly. U can buy it here for just Ten dollars!I liked this book so much I'll probably buy copies for friends. Mark if u should read this, a personal thank u from me is in DEFINATE order.

Entertainment and solid education.......1998-10-22
I initially picked this book up at the library because I enjoy her column. I found myself wanting to mark pages due to all the resources she mentions in the book. In fact, there were so many I decided it would be easier to just buy the book. I was impressed by her ability to adapt to changes in society without losing her sense of values. This one is a keeper.

A Very Nice Series.......2005-03-11
This series (Festival Time!) is very good. I enjoyed this book as much as others in the series. It allows me to teach about holidays in a simple manner to young students or emergent readers. Many books are too difficult or confusing. Four Special Questions is a good Passover book.
