Spirituality, optimism, career planning, and self-help neatly blend together in this highly useful guidebook on living one's true purpose. Step by step, Adrienne shows readers how to discover one's calling (learning how to take advantage of synchronicity, intuition, and "uncommon sense") and organize life accordingly. This coauthor of The Celestine Prophecy does not promise a payoff of material wealth or worldly fame. Rather, she suggests that "writing your own job description" and "doing the dream" will result in a more spiritual and meaningful life. Her most impressive leadership comes in the section called "Deep Water," where she addresses the obstacles and suffering that frequently block the path to enlightenment. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

The co-author of The Celestine Prophecy Experiential Guide helps readers uncover the unsuspected, untapped power of synchronicity and intuition that will bring success, satisfaction, and serenity.

Everyone really has a purpose in life, says Carol Adrienne in her new guide to harnessing the power inside yourself. The question is: How do you learn to go with the flow and let your true nature guide you?

Chapter by chapter, The Purpose of Your Life explains how to locate the source of your innate energy and focus it, how to align yourself with the natural forces that swirl around us always, and how to develop the intuition that fosters synchronicity. The book is packed with illuminating anecdotes and profiles of fascinating people -- from artists to urban planners to Zen masters -- who describe how they found their own purposes. There are practical exercises throughout, along with charts, self-questionnaires, and other tools that help you understand yourself and your deepest aspirations.

As you learn to recognize and trust the voice of intuition, you'll find new doors opening and new possibilities everywhere. You'll feel invigorated by the potential you've unleashed, a power that will only grow with each new accomplishment. And you'll discover the serenity and satisfaction that come only to those who are living life to the fullest. The Force is with you -- all you have to do is reach out and start to use it.

5 out of 5 stars A great guide book for a seeker of Purpose.......2007-05-30

Carol Adrienne has written an excellent primer on the subject of Purpose. Whether you are a writer or speaker on the subject of Purpose, this book provides some important guidelines to simplifying an otherwise complex subject. The insights and the 'Talking to Yourself'sections at the end of each chapter are especially helpful.

5 out of 5 stars excellant career guidance.......2006-03-09

I found this a very helpful book filled with ideas for people to find their purpose. I am a career guidance councelor and ninety percent of my clients do not have a purpose for why they are doing what they are doing in their work. They come to me saying "somethings missing in my work or life". It's often because they do not have a purpose which this book can help them create. Purpose is something we create or decide on. Many people think it's something mystical and we discover it by accident. This book gives people specific tools to help identify a meaningful purpose.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point.......2004-02-16

The optimism in this book combined with its emphasis on the link between intuition and synchronicity was infectious. I wanted to learn more! A new book that I stumbled across has become my companion to this one. It is called LUCKY YOU!, by Randall Fitzgerald, and it takes this book's themes and subject matter and adds to it information about using dreamwork and meditation practices and even prayer to help create streaks of good luck in our lives. Both books are relentlessly inspiring and full of optimism and hope. I liked all of the stories and the author's own anecdotes about creating good fortune.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring true stories and practical spirituality!.......2003-10-07

The co-author of The Celestine Prophecy Experiential Guide has put together this excellent collection of suggestions, ideas and true life stories to inspire one to find one's higher purpose, and a jolly good job it does! It is interesting, well-written and entertaining throughout, with each chapter finishing with a few straightforward questions and exercises to move you on in the right direction. Part three, "deep water", deals masterfully with the darker and more difficult experiences one sometimes has while trying to connect more deeply with the soul's purpose.

A major theme is developing an awareness of synchronicity (meaningful co-incidence) experiences as guiding posts for deeper personal development. There are a large number of interviews with people from a wide range of backgrounds, all of whom have come to find their unique purpose through such ideas. Quotes from the famous such as the Dalai Lama and Frank Zappa (!), and not so famous are also highlighted throughout the text e.g."intuition is the creative, universal intention expressing through you" and "either I am lost, crazy and screwed up, or I am found and on a difficult part of the path".

I found the chapter on "the void" particularly supportive, especially the section on "holding your centre during confusion, chaos and fear". Carol Adrienne is not afraid to explore the sometimes harsh realities of the spiritual journey, but the book is essentially upbeat and positively inspirational.

Michael Riera is the high school counselor many of us wish we'd had: he's smart, non-judgmental, and respectful of kids. This excellent book is chock full o' advice for parents that sometimes goes against the established grain but makes utter sense. For example, don't give advice even when asked, embrace estrangement (it's part of your teenager's development), and take a demotion and move from "manager" to "consultant." Uncommon Sense is an excellent book for any parent of an older child or teenager.

Book Description

With more than 100,000 copies sold, Michael Riera's UNCOMMON SENSE FOR PARENTS WITH TEENAGERS has ushered countless families through the trying years of adolescence. Offering a fresh interpretation of the teen years, Riera asserts that this period of a child's growth is too often misunderstood as a phase to be dreaded instead of enjoyed. In this fully revised and updated edition, Riera tackles some of the newest issues facing parents and teens—text messaging and the Internet, changing driver's license requirements, fad diets and exercise—and gives a second look to the old standbys—alcohol and drugs, academics, sex and dating, sports and extracurricular activities, eating disorders, making friends, single parenting, divorce, and more. Beginning with overviews of the parent-teenager relationship, the adolescent world, and high school, the bulk of the book comprises a series of responses to questions commonly asked by parents. Based on his 19 years as a teacher, counselor, dean of students, and parent, Riera recommends some unexpected—and ultimately successful—approaches, like "Communicate indirectly," "Let your teenager brood," and "Resist giving advice, even when your teenager asks for it." With a rare appreciation for this special developmental stage of life and an unpatronizing approach to teenagers, UNCOMMON SENSE FOR PARENTS WITH TEENAGERS is a beacon of optimism and hope for confused and wearied families everywhere.

This book provided excellent parenting ideas for teens. My teen is more open with my husband and I after utilizing some of the techniques outlined.

Good common sense suggestions. Referred by family therapist and was worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars Making sense of it all.......2000-06-16

Most of us spend our entire adult life trying to figure out our own childhood, so it's no wonder that raising a child can seem confusing, challenging and at times scary. This book saved me. It taught me (or at least reminded me) that all teenagers go through enormous physical, psychological and social change in the high school years. While the specific behaviors will vary from child to child, there is a common thread running through it all -- and it makes sense. This book reassured me that my child wasn't abnormal, that I was right in being confused and sometimes appalled by their behavior. And it let me take a step back and not take it so personally. After reading this book, I bought a dozen copies to give to friends and business associates who were struggling with teenagers (or soon would be). Read this and both you and your child will benefit.

5 out of 5 stars Uncommon Understanding!.......1999-11-21

From a teenager who has read more than his fair share of parenting books, this one tops them off. On average, this book covers exactly what these types of books should. It doesn't just tell the parent to "talk more" with their teenager, it actually goes in depth about how the teenager thinks and feels. And, for the first time in my experience, it actually gets close! If you have teens, you should have this book.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-opener.......2007-03-09

General semantics provides a very clear, lucid way of understanding reality, and of building linguistic structures to express our understanding more clearly. I highly recommend this book for its clarity and ease of explanation, not to mention totally righteous, mind-blowingness.

5 out of 5 stars Uncommon Sense Of Extensional Orientating.......2006-02-07

Bruce I. Kodish has a doctorate in Applied Epistemology: General Semantics; further has studied physical therapy with posture-movement education. Currently serves on the teaching staff of the Institute of General Semantics. Susan Presby Kodish has a Psychology doctorate. Joining the Institute of General Semantics teaching staff in 1983, serving as Educational Director. Further both served as senior editors of the "General Semantics Bulletin".
Our daily functioning depends upon notions comprising of personal, collective, etc., experiences, perhaps involving some level of scientific understanding, but organized by Aristotle's (c. 350 B.C.) 'logic', which has an equivalence to a cultural 'common sense' forming a world view (paradigm). However when we evaluate using such mis-information, this leads to mis-perceivings, resulting in inappropriate, inflexible, functionings, etc., hence appearing maladjusted. Further that we do not question our false assumptions remains apart of the 'common sense' notions, that we are not aware as to how language affects our evaluating (event(s)-insight-logic), 'filtering' our perceivings. For example, Benjamin Whorf (1956) while an insurance investigator, had (re-)discovered (Korzybski, 1933) that, such 'unconscious' language 'habibts' can lead to accidents: people often smoked carelessly around 'empty' (filled with vapour) gaseoline drums.
Such that an uncommon sense, must involve an extensional (factual evaluating) orientation, thus scientific, as 'opposed' to 'conditioned' 'aristotelian metaphysical-logical' 'deductions'. That our premises (theories, guesses, etc) lead to consequences, as poorly developed forms of Mathematical-logic, first became noticed by Cassius J. Keyser (1922) as "Logical Fate". So that it appeared clear that if we can apply a mathematical framework, making our premises extensionally conscious, then we might function more adjusted, adaptively, (sanely), etc.; since different premises leads to different consequences, we must revise them inductively.
Where Alfred Korzybski's (1933) General Semantics (Science of values, hence evaluating), addresses these along with many other problems.
Whereas this book represents an excellent primer for General Semantics.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You S&S.......2005-11-01

I first read S&S in my late teens while in college probably in 1960. I truly believe that it kept me sane during that decade.
Thank you S&S for helping to save me from abandoning myself to profound confusion. Thank you S&S for helping me to question the events of that period by applying reason and the principles revealed to me by Korzibsky. When I was drafted into the military in 1968 I realized that I had 'under-defined' patriotism by excluding the terms Marine Corps(yes they were drafting people also), rifle and killing. Over 35 years have pasted and now I continue to apply S&S ideas to get me through each day as I hear the double-speak coming out of my government. Thank you S&S for helping me to understand that people who don't question will allow others to cast the definition of words for them. Democracy IS invasion, freedom IS our way, justice IS killing. Thank you S&S for reminding me that democracy, freedom and justice are just words and that their truer meaning can be more fully learned only by the way we define and live our individual lives. After all , democracy is just a word unless you live it!

5 out of 5 stars Introduction to Sanity.......2004-04-19

This is an excellent introduction and explanation of Korzybski's work, and I recommend it to both newcomers and experts alike. Alfred Korzybski was one of the unacknowledged geniuses of the twentieth century. He influenced a host of other thinkers and writers, among them Buckminster Fuller, Robert Heinlein, L. Ron Hubbard. Korzybski's great work, "Science and Sanity" (1933), can be a difficult book. I thus I tried to get this book, "Drive Yourself Sane," but the at that time it was out of print. I was forced to tackle "Science and Sanity" alone. I had to read it three times through over a period of several years. I wish I'd had "Drive Yourself Sane" to help me through some of the rough spots. It is well organized, nicely laid out, and has a valuable glossary in the back. It also includes valuable personal accounts from the authors. However, even an expert can gain knowledge from this book. I found that it filled in gaps in my knowledge of the subject (general semantics), gave me some new insights, and told me what others had been doing in the field since 1933. Regardless of whether you are interested in Korzybski or not, you won't finish this book without a little IQ rise.

5 out of 5 stars A practical-minded look at English semantics.......2002-10-06

Now in its revised second edition, Drive Yourself Sane: Using The Uncommon Sense Of General Semantics by Susan and Bruce Kodish (recipients of the J. Talbot Winchell Award for their work in general semantics) is a practical-minded look at the semantics of the English language, how they affect interpersonal communication, and how individuals can use knowledge of the underlying meanings between phrases and words to improve their understanding and interaction with fellow human beings. Drive Yourself Sane is highly recommended for its informed and informative examination of the practical side of language science, and for its accessible to both the formal student of linguistics and the non-specialist general reader with an interest in the effects of communication upon personal development.

Book Description

Who's your satellite sister?

She's the one you turn to when the best thing in your life happens-or the worst. She's a satellite sister, a friend or sibling or college roommate who supports, accepts, sometimes busts, and always encourages you. She can get you through a bad haircut-or a bad marriage. And, because nothing beats old-fashioned hilarity, your satellite sister makes you laugh so hard that Diet Coke comes out your nose.

Meet the Satellite Sisters: Five real-life sisters who grew up, grew apart, and then came together again, united by the belief that whether by nature or by choice, being someone's sister or friend is what gives meaning to our lives. In Satellite Sisters' UnCommon Senses, the Dolan sisters apply their big-family wisdom to the range of experiences and issues we face in our grown-up lives. The result is their UnCommon Senses-5 essential traits needed to face the challenges and demands of our over-subscribed modern lives...and still end the day with our laughter intact. Warm, spirited, wise, and hilarious, these Satellite Sisters will remind you of your own satellite sisters.

4 out of 5 stars Like reading their radio show.......2006-03-03

I enjoyed the sisters' book. Though I identify more with Julie- I think Liam is an excellent writer- I would read another book of theirs. It doesn't take a lot of brain power to get through but yet it is a satisfyingly civil book.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasant quick read.......2005-09-14

I really enjoyed reading the Dolan sisters' book. I have only listened to their radio show half a dozen times, so I found the insight into their personal lives very helpful to understanding the show---also, quite hilarious! Not really a "guideline" book, which is what I thought it would be. Just a pleasant read.

5 out of 5 stars Eagerly awaiting the next book!.......2004-06-13

I laughed. I cried. I rushed out and picked up 4 more books (1 for each of my sisters, and 1 for my best friend). These sisters really seem to belong in my family. Vivian (our baby) is the family story-teller, who can turn the oddest situation into an adventure which will wring laughter out of the most jaded and depressed audience around. Beth can organize any event flawlessly, and boss around anyone in her vicinity with great aplomb (except our older brother, who always would hide in a closet or bathroom when projects were afoot). And... the comparisons, stories and lists just won't stop. Thanks to these wonderful gals for reminders about the sheer fun of growing up in a huge family - and the life lessons which we acquired along the way. Makes me wonder how on earth our Mother managed to shepherd our entire brood around Europe by herself, but the answer is obvious - she was already a member of the Sisterhood!

5 out of 5 stars I loved them in Oprah Magazine so I bought their book.......2004-04-17

These sisters are hilarious. I read their regular column in Oprah Magazine and listen to their radio show, so when I saw the paperback in the store, I grabbed it. You know how you feel when you spend a fun night with your girlfriends? That's how you'll feel after reading this book. The five Dolan sisters are all very funny but their points of view about life are very different. It's organized into a series of separate essays about their lives growing up and their lives now. This book is a pleasure and I've already bought it for a couple of my friends for their birthdays and they agreed.

5 out of 5 stars Fan of the show. Fan of the book........2004-01-04

As I don't always have my ear tuned to the radio to hear their show, or my biological sisters nearby, I enjoy turning to this book in small doses for a bit of wisdom and wit. It is a celebration of siblings and sisterhood. Each of the Dolan sister's personalities comes through and it's like having the work of a family member on my bookshelf. Thanks, girls.

      Book Description

Disputes over religion and science, such as the divide between teaching "intelligent design" and evolution in U.S. schools, have brought to the public eye a struggle that Anthony Aveni argues is as old as culture itself. All societies seek to understand the natural world, but their search is shaped by culturally distinct views and experiences. In Uncommon Sense, Aveni explores the common and conflicting ways that ancient and contemporary societies have searched for the literal truth about the natural world's mysteries, from dinosaur bones to the Star of Bethlehem. Aveni demonstrates that a society's approach to making sense of the natural world can serve as a working definition of its culture, so strongly does it resonate with fundamental values and assumptions.

In ten fascinating essays, Aveni examines topics that have absorbed scientists, religious figures, and ordinary citizens over the centuries. He traces the tug of war between astronomy and astrology, reveals the underpinnings of our notions of cartography and the representation of space and time, and much more.

Readers interested in science, history, and world cultures will revel in this celebration of different cultures' common and uncommon questions and conclusions about the natural world.

Why does American business seem to sputter along where it ought to thrive? What is the source of the current plague of downsizing, disappearing companies, dot-com crashes, and here-today-gone-tomorrow advertising campaigns? Why do more products flop than ever before? Marketing experts Kevin J. Clancy and Peter C. Krieg have the answers.

In Counterintuitive Marketing, Clancy and Krieg trace the high rate of business failure back to bad marketing strategy, and the even worse implementation of that strategy. Excess testosterone, they argue, compels senior managers to make decisions intuitively, instinctively, quickly, and, unfortunately, disastrously.

In this informative and enlightening book, Clancy and Krieg confront these "over-and-over-again" marketers, who don't have time to do it right the first time, but endless time and a company bankroll to do it wrong over and over again. The authors draw from their decades of consumer and business-to-business marketing experience to describe the intuitive decision-making practices that permeate business today, and demonstrate how these practices lead to disappointing performance.

Chapter by chapter, Counterintuitive Marketing contrasts how marketing decisions are made today with how they should be made. The authors give equal treatment to targeting, positioning, product development, pricing, customer service, e-commerce, marketing planning, implementation, and more as they present counterintuitive ideas for building and introducing blockbuster marketing programs.

Readers will discover in this iconoclastic treasure chest hundreds of penetrating insights that have enabled the authors' firm, Copernicus, to transform companies and become a "brand guardian" to the Fortune 500 and emerging businesses around the world. The tools to create exceptional marketing programs really do exist, and they are all here in Counterintuitive Marketing, the ultimate practical guide for any company of any size.

More and more companies are discovering that while it is possible to increase profits by cutting costs, it is not possible to downsize a business and still grow. Convinced that marketing new and existing goods or services is the least risky way for any company to expand, Kevin J. Clancy and Peter C. Krieg -- who head Copernicus, one of the world's leading research and consulting organizations -- give managers both the theoretical framework for a strategically integrated marketing approach and the tools they will need to build marketing plans that work. In Counterintuitive Marketing Clancy and Krieg: -- Explain why it is essential to forge a vital link between strategic planning and marketing -- a link missing in too many businesses -- Reveal how technological advances can make a critical difference in targeting, positioning, advertising, new product development, and pricing. -- Show the difference between marketing plans based on science and those based on tradition -- and explain how to best develop and test marketing ideas -- Provide a two-page marketing questionnaire that every marketing department can use to keep on track. Their book will be required reading for every successful marketing manager.

      5 out of 5 stars Essential reading.......2006-07-05

Full of good ideas, provokations, insights, this is another great book from Clancy et al. I'd recommend a full set of their books to anyone, not a dud among them.

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best Marketing Book on the Market.......2004-07-22

The binding is falling apart and I've highlighted so many pages that my copy seems to glow in the dark, but there's no mistaking the value of this book. Counterintuitive Marketing continues to be THE best marketing book available today, bar none. Why? Because while it debunks many of the myths surrounding the marketing industry with crystal clarity, it also gives specific details on how to make your marketing better. This is not an armchair read (although it moves pretty quickly). If you're serious about marketing or if you aren't getting the performance you or your bosses are expecting, then read this book. It's an eye opener.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read Book.......2004-07-14

The first half of Kevin Clancy's recent book, Counter-Intuitive Marketing, is the best marketing book I've read. Period. The second half will fly a thousand feet over the head of most marketing practitioners, and can only be enjoyed by dyed-in-the-wool marketing researchers. It doesn't matter. The bottom line is these counter-intuitive concepts will probably change the way you plan and implement your marketing programs. I enthusiastically recommend this book to everyone involved with business-to-business marketing and advertising.

5 out of 5 stars Great content and practical advice.......2004-04-29

I just read Clancy and Krieg's Counterintuitive Marketing and it was amazing. Loaded with content, solid research and practical advice. It teaches stuff about marketing I never learned in my NYU MBA program. I strongly recommend it. Then I read the screed (AKA review) by "Chanali from Asia." Who is this guy and has he worked for even a day in the real
      world?

5 out of 5 stars You should read this if you are serious about marketing.......2004-04-22

Counterintuitive marketing was an amazing book. I learned more about marketing and the decision-making tools that are available today from this book than I did in my MBA classes. If you are a serious marketing person, you need to read this book.

It's not BS--this is the way the smartest people in marketing make decisions. People who cling to outdated ways of thinking and are afraid of change probably won't like this book. The only way to make better decisions about marketing is to take the time to understand your customers. This requires research.

People who skim a few chapters, will miss important ideas. For instance, the authors explain how to use focus groups correctly--as a starting point in the research process. They never say don't use them, they say don't use them to make multi-million dollar decisions. That anyone in this day and age is basing a critical decision on the opinions of 6-8 people is crazy.

This book is the future of marketing. Anyone who says otherwise just doesn't get it.

      Book Description

"Peter Cochrane is one of our most far-sighted visionaries, and brings brilliant clarity and focus to our understanding of ourselves and our technologies, and of how profoundly each is transforming the other." -Douglas Adams, Author, The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy

In Uncommon Sense, Peter Cochrane's follow up to the radical 108 Tips for Time Traveller, Peter explains how very simple analysis allows the prediction of such debacles as the 3G auction and the subsequent collapse of an industry, whilst simple-minded thinking is dangerous in the context of a world that is predominantly chaotic and out of control.

People balked when Peter suggested a wholesale move to eWorking, the rise of email and text messaging, and the dotcom regime mirroring the boom and bust cycle of the industrial revolution. His predictions of the use and growth of mobile devices and communication, or use of chip implants for humans to replace ID cards, passports, and medical records, or iris scanners and fingerprint readers - were all seen as unlikely. Today they are a reality.

How then will the world react to his predictions as set out in Uncommon Sense of a networked world of distributed ignorance and sharing overcoming an old world of concentrated skill and control? To everything becoming 'Napsterised' in every dimension, where storage and processing power cost nothing, and become connected without the help of the old network companies? A world where individuals create their own networks, where laws of copyright and resale, and old business models have to be changed as giant industries are dragged kicking and screaming out of the 19th Century and into the 21st?

Peter Cochrane poses and answers questions, suggests solutions, and raises red flags on issues that need to be addressed. Tables, diagrams, pictures and illustrations generously support all of the text, with the most difficult aspects illustrated by simulations and other material on a CD and links to a web site with an ongoing expansion of the themes addressed.

      4 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2007-05-07

This book was an extremely interesting read. It gives you lots to think about in our computer-centric world. Cochrane may come off as a little odd at first, but the more you read the more interesting points he brings up. It gives the reader a perspective that you wouldn't get from the more mainstream tech editorials. Definitely worth the read.

      5 out of 5 stars Kick-start your brain!.......2004-10-05

I'm not sure how Cochrane can contain such a diversity of thought within a single mind but I'm very thankful that he can. The broad sweep of these essays has truly opened my eyes to the inexorable and interwoven position of technology in all aspects of our lives. Technology is not "out there" it's "in here". I feel more awake, better educated and perhaps a little afraid. Read this book to kick-start your brain, evolve your own "uncommon sense" and get involved in the dialogue. Cochrane is expert at illuminating our shadowy future. The issues addressed are some of the most important of our times. I highly recommend this book if you want to know what technology "means".

5 out of 5 stars Insights on Business Technology.......2004-07-18

This series of essays from global thought leader Peter Cochrane is required reading for business technologists. Cochrane addresses the issues we think about-and don't think about-in ways that offer new insights into everyday challenges. His observations on giving presentations in "Salesmanship" will make people think twice about getting up in front of a room. These essays, which cover everything from security to online shopping to management to mobility (and beyond), are infused with creativity. Cochrane's ability to see around corners, and to look at the world just a bit differently in ways that ultimately make sense, will re-invigorate thinking and leave us better prepared for the next challenge.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Snapshots.......2004-06-21

As I rule I do not care for essay collections but I found this book to be completely worthwhile. Starting with a snapshot of his own educational issues, Cochrane opened my eyes to new possibilities in learning, and how to share ideas with others. Subsequent articles on topics that I was familiar with became fresh ideas and I found that I was not only able to follow (prehaps for the first time) but actually appreciate the various nuances on topics that I normally would not consider. The book uses both text and visuals to make clear some of the technical points and helps tie together issues ranging from learning to technology and all with a brilliant focus on business management.

        Book Description

"Geert Hofstede writes very clearly and engagingly. His interest in people is deep and genuine, and he enjoys the variety of their habits and motivations. His sympathy is usually with the underdogs in any situation, rather than those in authority, but he sees the humanity of both. His studies are carefully done. . . . His insights are nicely expressed. . . .The greatest value of Uncommon Sense About Organizations will probably be as a resource for management teaching, in its human behavioral aspects. --Systems Research "This is a worthwhile collection. . . . His work is notable for its international and cross-cultural approach. . . . Hence this book deserves a place on the bookshelves of serious students of organizations, particularly those with an international orientation." --Work, Employment, and Society "As the author takes us on an international journey, his writing covers a wide range of situations, from the shop floor, and the staff and management of multinational corporations, to the scene in a Swiss high school graduating class. The material, even when academic, holds the reader's interest because he writes about real events and people. . . . I enjoyed the international flavor of the cases and the freshness of the articles because the author revisits and analyzes the material, with the benefit of hindsight and continued scholarship. . . . I was impressed by the wide range of interests of the author." --Borje O. Saxberg, Graduate School of Business Administration, University of Washington Hofstede's lifetime of research into organizational behavior has yielded a considerable number of studies using a variety of methodologies. Uncommon Sense About Organizations assembles 17 of the author's superlative articles and case studies, grouping them within three main themes: the impact of jobs on people, power and control in organizations, and studies in training sessions. Hofstede further divides and examines these subjects in relation to their sizes, categorizing studies of the individual or small group as belonging to organizational psychology, for example, while attributing the study of a single, larger, and more complex organization to the discipline of organizational anthropology. The combination of the author's careful and informed scrutiny and his thoughtful juxtaposition of these topics reveals organizational realities that might not otherwise be discerned. Encompassing such wide-ranging disciplines as sociology, psychology and anthropology, Uncommon Sense About Organizations is a tour de force of behavioral science research.
