Book Description
What would you do to inherit a million dollars? Would you be willing to change your life? Jason Stevens is about to find out in Jim Stovall's The Ultimate Gift. Red Stevens has died, and the older members of his family receive their millions with greedy anticipation. But a different fate awaits young Jason, whom Stevens, his great-uncle, believes may be the last vestige of hope in the family. "Although to date your life seems to be a sorry excuse for anything I would call promising, there does seem to be a spark of something in you that I hope we can fan into a flame. For that reason, I am not making you an instant millionaire." What Stevens does give Jason leads to The Ultimate Gift. Young and old will take this timeless tale to heart.
Customer Reviews:
Read the book, watch the movie - both will inspire!.......2007-10-01
I received this book as a gift shortly after watching the movie by the same name - I was greatly impressed with the movie and anxious to read the book (since everyone knows that the book is always better than the movie). This book is no exception to that rule - an outstanding read and it was as easy to read as the movie was to watch. This is a novel, a work of fiction that drives home some real life points! The premise of the book is about what's really important in life - is it what we build with our hands or the money and worldly success we achieve, or is it something more than that, something that isn't tangible and can't be bought or sold for any amount of money? In his final will, a dying wealthy man tries to communicate from the grave the true meaning of life to a family member who up until this point hasn't got a clue!
I would think that this book could probably be read to children in upper elementary school and could be read by 7th or 8th graders on their own. The book should be read by parents first so that they can engage their children in conversation along the way. While the book isn't overtly Christian, you'll find that the lessons taught in this novel are very similar to the wisdom shared in the Book of Proverbs and throughout Scripture. Stovall isn't preaching, but he sure can drive a point home with this story; and these twelve "gifts" passed from one generation to the next are essential for each and every one of us to learn as well.
While some say that the movie isn't as good as the book, I say that they are a pretty good compliment of each other. The movie takes various liberties with the book to get this message on screen, but you won't be disappointed with either. The book is written to provoke thought and discussion and families should use them as tools to teach valuable life lessons to their children - Red Stevens would have wanted it that way!
The Ultimate Gift DVD.......2007-09-27
The Ultimate Gift you sent me was a total disaster. I ordered the movie edition and you sent me a book and a promotional DVD. I did not receive the movie edition of the Ultimate Gift. Unfortunately I had ordered it to take on a bus trip that I was directing and I had not taken the time to watch what you sent me, thinking it was the movie edition. When I put it in the DVD player with everyone on the bus eager to watch the movie there was only the promotional disc. Needless to say I was embarrassed and not too happy. Fortunately along the way I was able to purchase the DVD that I thought I was buying from Amazon at a much higher price. I have ordered from Amazon before and have been very pleased but not this time.
A Timely Gift.......2007-09-24
Several copies of The Ultimate Gift were placed on a table at my workplace. A handwritten note read, "Take one and pass it on." The title was intriguing and never one to pass up something free or an opportunity to read, I took one.
Having gained knowledge of most of these gifts through the ups and downs of life, I enjoyed the validations, while unfortunately identifying with Uncle Red's mistakes. I am grateful to the person who made it possible to have a copy of the book.
I titled this review 'a timely gift' because I received in time read it and mail it to my son as a gift for his 26th birthday. Like Uncle Red, wishing to provide, I robbed my children of many of the gifts. I am hoping the book will make a difference in my son's life as he is not a happy person even though he has many blessings. When and if I am in touch with my prodigal daughter, I will share The Ultimate Gift with her, also. It is my goal to share copies of The Ultimate Gift with many, many young persons.
Good , but not terrific.......2007-09-19
The reviews I read promised an inspiring book. It was not to be. It was an interesting premise and story. But the lack of detailed story left me disappointed. Reading the story from the lawyer's view did not give us an opportunity to really travel the road to enlightenment. I felt I was reading the summary, not the story.
A movie of the book is coming out soon. I dare say, I see an immense opprtunity for the movie to outshine the book.
Great book!.......2007-09-17
This is a great book and I would recommend buying used items from Amazon as I have always been satisified with my purchases and most of all, the money I save. This book has been made into a movie that is really great, but the book is always better.

Surprisingly, Asterix has a different view of the situation than his friends.

Very good magazine!.......2007-05-14
One of those adventures you enjoy reading, fun for any kid or adult.
Another "trouble in the village" episode.......2007-03-05
Rene Goscinny, Asterix and Caesar's Gift (Dargaud, 1972)
Caesar deeds our favorite Gaulish village to a retiring drunkard of a soldier, who trades it to a Lutetian for a meal and an amphora. Said Lutetian goes to said village and sets himself up as the new leader. Tension abounds. I'm fondest of Goscinny when he's doing this sort of thing-- looking at the way civilization breaks down when outside influences appear (viz. Asterix and the Roman Agent), especially given Uderzo's rather stereotypical drawing style when it comes to certain ethnic minorities that pop up now and again... ***
Asterix and Caesar's Gift.......2007-02-05
"Asterix and Caesar's Gift" (1974) is Asterix #21 It's fairly good. Worth a look for fans of characters in the village like Geriatrix and Vitalstatistix.
Julius Caesar gives his troops a plot of land if they give 20 years of work to his army. Julius has overheard that one man up for retirement doesn't like him, so Julius gives him a deed to land he hasn't conquered yet, Vitalstatistix's Gaulish village. Man can't be bothered going all the way up to the corner of Gaul, so he sells his plot for some beer to a tavern keeper, who goes with his family to claim the village. Challenges and chaos follow in the village...
Caesar sets a cat among the pigeons..........2002-12-30
After a drunken Legionnaire is heard making insulting remarks about Julius Caesar, Caesar decides to give him a present-which he in turn sells to a Gaullish Innkeeper for a meal and some drinks.
The innkeeper, Orthopaedix, comes to the village, we know so well, with his wife and daughter, setting in chain a breakdown of cohesion there, as a dispute over the Chieftainship of the village, Obelix falling in love, and the refusal of Druid Getafix to make magic potion makes for another rollicking Asterix adventure.
Once more, a lot of fun.
Not the best..........2001-01-20
Well, its Asterix, so of course its wonderful. It certainly is not the best one, though. Rome has a new tack for conquering the village, one that causes even more dissension then usual. The addition of a rather annoying girl who seems to wrap all of the men around her finger is a sorry newcomer who just doesnt live up to the normally delightful characters. Of course it has all of the elements that make Astrix wonderful, and it is true no collection would be complete without it.
Book Description
On generating the perfect party in Hollywood:
If celebrities don’t walk your red carpet, you don’t exist.
If you don’t make Page Six, you don’t exist.
To get ten celebrities to show up, invite four hundred. And send a car.
Publicity is the only job you can do perfectly and still fail.
And the gift bag totally matters.
As the newly promoted head of event planning for one of L.A.’s top publicity firms, Alex Davidson spends her days making decisions of utmost importance: Grey Goose or Belvedere? MAC or Stila? Queen Latifah or Chloë Sevigny? And though her boyfriend, agency president Charles Evers, lives on the other coast, she could be doing worse. But leave it to her mother to point out the obvious: After one failed, childless marriage, Alex is the “career divorcée” and the antithesis of her sister, the perfect stay-at-home mom. And there’s no spin in the world that can cover up the growing rift between Alex and Charles.
From dealing with outrageously self-important clients and holier-than-thou C-listers to trying to make sense of her growing attraction to a man who is not her boyfriend but her best friend, Alex feels as if she’s about one Red Bull shy of a meltdown. With her professional future hanging in the balance, she has the biggest party of the season to pull off. And the real question is: Will the gift bags measure up?

Gift bags are the pinnacle issue! .......2006-08-09
Enjoyable book, almost couldn't put it down! Very enjoyable read. I am looking forward to reading S 5 Minutes Ago!
Hard Working Heroine.......2006-07-11
Hilary De Vries is a very clever and always readable author, but So 5 Minutes Ago, DeVries first novel about Alex Davidson, was a much easier read than The Gift Bag Chronicles. There is a very pervasive sense of exhaustion in this novel, and I'm not sure it's entirely attributable to the heroine's insanely demanding job. In this book, the love found at the end of So 5 Minutes Ago turns to dust and ashes, in order that a new love can be found, but the whole thing feels a little contrived and made-to-order. It would have been interesting to see Alex grow up within a relationship, instead of having the formulaic chick lit "the guy you really ought to be with is right under your nose" revelation. Something about this book just felt like hard work. (Which will in no way affect me rushing out to buy Book #3, if and when it appears!)
Great summer reading.......2006-07-05
This is a fun quick read. Great for summer. Relaxing and entertaining.
Boring book.......2006-07-05
I bought this book thinking it would be a good beach read but I never really could get into it. The characters were boring. Way too much whining. The plot was very slow. I finally had to put it down.
fast, funny, the perfect escape.......2006-04-04
A clever conceit -- the whole "gift bag" culture in Hollywood is something I'd never thought about -- and spit-spot writing make this my pick of the year. De Vries could teach Tom Wolfe something about writing with economy, and she's second to none in the keen-eye department. Fast, funny -- and oddly poignant. I read De Vries' first book -- "So 5 Minutes Ago" -- and she just keeps getting better. A MAJOR new talent, folks.

Book Description
A powerful short novel that's vintage Hamill-an evocative, emotionally involving tale of fathers and sons, loss and yearning, forgiveness and approbation-is restored to print. Brooklyn, 1952. It is Christmastime and a young sailor named Pete is home on leave, temporarily liberated from the specter of war in Korea. He's back in the old neighborhood, discovering firsthand that the girl he left behind evidently meant what she said in the Dear John letter she sent him. He's back in the dreary Seventh Avenue apartment that his mother can ill afford to decorate for the holidays. And he's back facing off with Billy, the gruff Irish factory worker who is his father, yet seems forever a stranger-until, on Christmas Eve, Pete pays his first visit to Rattigan's, the local bar where his father hangs out, the place where Billy seems most fully alive.

Truly a Gift.......2007-08-08
Pete Hamill Never dissapoints. One beautifully told story of whats important in life. Love and Family
An Elegy for a Time, a Place, and a Father Long Gone.......2007-07-08
When it all comes down to it, this is a love story. During a Christmas leave from the navy in 1952, seventeen-year-old Pete returns to Brooklyn to confront unrequited love--for his high school aged girlfriend and for the father he admires but does not know. Through this story the author expresses his love of family, of comrades, and of a Brooklyn that will always be a part of him. Hamill captures the sound of New York in the dialogue of his characters, and he also captures the dreams that so many young people have as they look toward their futures. This is an archetypal story of the American Dream, fathers and sons, and young love. The narrator at times reminds you of Tom Wingfield from THE GLASS MENAGERIE, and the visits to various barrooms may remind you of THE TENDER BAR. That is pretty good company to be in.
Disappointing Book.......2007-01-10
I love Pete Hamill and was looking forward to reading another of his stories about New York at Christmas time. This was a major disappointment.
Touching novella.......2006-01-03
Beautiful descriptions of old Brooklyn in the early fifties--an era which still had some residual impact on my childhood in the sixties. It was a more innocent era, particularly the descriptions of the teenage lustful sexual yearnings, seldom satisfied, but nearly always colorfully described. The writing is a little uneven, but I found the ending to be very touching. A small gem, fitting to read at Christmas time. It made me want to seek out more works by the author.
Leaves You Wanting More.......2005-12-22
A Good Read for anytime of the year, but an especially good read at Christmas...A coming-of-age story that leaves you wanting more...More about the soldier telling the story, more about his family, more about the other people in the story, all of whom are interesting and well-crafted...Set in 1952 during the Korean War, this book is proof once again that good stories are ageless and timeless...A story that stays with you and gets finer with time...

Book Description
A smooth talker. An even better listener. And handsome as heaven on earth. He is God's Gift to Women.
Julian Payne gets into bed with millions of women every night. As an after-hours radio talk-show host, Julian captivates his female audience with his deep voice and sensitive spirit. Women can't get enough: They call in, begging for his advice about love, lust, commitment, and betrayal. Julian provides his listeners with the blunt male perspective, and he always has the right thing to say. But when it comes to his own romantic life, or lack thereof, he's at a loss for words.
A widower and father to ten-year-old Samantha, Julian wants nothing more than to settle down again with the right woman. Just when he thinks he's found her in Dr. Terri Ross -- smart, stunning, and with her own counseling practice -- Julian is confronted by a ghost from the past: Olivia Brown, a woman with whom he had a one-night stand. Suddenly Julian finds himself in a situation with a woman who's determined to win him over...or make his life a living hell.
Michael Baisden's hottest offering yet, God's Gift to Women is a compelling tale about the consequences of sex with a stranger.
Customer Reviews:
lousy.......2007-10-01
I was very disappointed. The book read as if the author was speaking---which apparently wasn't at much higher than a high school level. To me it was offensive to african americans--just because one is of color, it doesn't mean they use the cliche black slang that this author chose to use.
Surprisingly addictive!.......2007-08-13
I must say this is the second Micheal Baisden book I have read, however this one kept me wanting more and left me haunted by thoughts of the deranged Olivia Brown for days after I had finished the book. I have already done so, but would recommend this to anyone who wants a quick read and thrilling ride. Hasn't everyone known someone as crazy as Olivia? I truly thought so, but this character shook me to the core. The thought that someone could be that obsessive was truly scarey!
Hey, why are we still waiting for another Baisden novel?
Exciting.......2007-03-26
I really enjoyed this book from the front cover to the back cover. It was a very exciting book. I was in suspense alot. I kept reading during interruptiions to visualize Olivia's crazy actions. By reading the book, you'll discover that Olivia was a crazy, sexy, freak. (she's a insane bi*tch. I would highly recommend this book to all my friends and family.

Book Description
Nexus offers an engaging and insightful journey of an odd mix of people drawn together to a spiritual retreat to overcome personal pain. This book will please readers of spiritual, new age, inspirational, self-help and visionary fiction books. It weaves insights within the narrative like The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield and The Peaceful Warrior series by Dan Millman.
Starting with a dramatic suicide scene through intimate details of the struggle of Logan Andrews with depression and despair, we are brought on a journey of inner struggle and personal transformation. The reader is transported to a spiritual retreat where the experiences of people at the retreat provide illuminating life lessons. The tone of book creates an authentic journey that is both exploratory and insightful.
The overriding theme in
Nexus is mystical in its nature, narrating experiences of deeper connection felt with one another and all of life. This is poignantly highlighted in key passages, including Logan's empathy for a dying fish in Chapter 6.
Customer Reviews:
Need for Spiritual Change.......2007-07-01
I've read many spiritual books and this one really spoke to me with a story that communicated about both the highs and lows of spiritual life through the touching journey of people at a retreat center. Each person in the story is dealing with their own sorrow from the depression-despair of Logan, Sarah's loss of direction and Muriel's desire to be comforted in her old age. Steven is fixated on his money-making schemes and in order for him to experience growth, he needs to connect to the path of love.
The story speaks of something deeper - a need for spiritual change. It isn't always stated on the surface and you have to dig deeper to recognize that as the central theme of this book. Yet you feel this impulse motivating the communication between teachers and students at the retreat center and the experiences there allude to a deeper bond - to the Nexus that connects us all through our heart where empathy and compassion can grow with experiences of our Oneness. The compassion Logan shows for a dying fish vividly captures this theme. This vision of non-duality is always there beneath the surface though our ego stands in the way of its realization.
The message in this book is beautiful and so I want others to know about it. Through spiritual books like this, we can delve into consciousness transformation and share it with others.
Really Bad. Don't Buy.......2007-06-30
I made the mistake of purchasing this book because it was referenced in a review for The Road (an amazing fiction currently on the best seller list). Now I realize I was probably led into buying it by one of the authors' friends or supporters. The 5 star reviews are bias, to say the least! The dialogue is beyond bad. It is stilted and at times downright silly. I love top quality spiritual writings like "The Power of Now" by E. Tolle or the writings of D. Chopra. It's not that I am spiritually closed, I just know very bad writing when I see it.
This "fiction" is an attempt to flesh out the spiritual teachings of the two authors through poorly crafted, one dimensional characters. I would rather drink flax oil and fast for a week to better my soul than read this kind of stuff. I anticipate receiving some unsupportive votes for this review, and these will likely come from the friends of the authors who have written the 5 star reviews. So be it. I'd rather be honest and save the potential Amazon customer some money!
Thought Provoking.......2007-05-30
NEXUS is an absorbing guide to the dazzling universe of spirituality! Written in the appealing genre of a new age novel I found NEXUS to be a remarkable psychological and spiritual adventure filled with mystery, enchantment, romance, insights, as well as being highly realistic in terms of life's joys and sorrows. I just couldn't put the book down!!!
The diverse assortment of characters were realistic, and the plot was deep, lively and fast paced throughout. NEXUS WORKED AT VERY DEEP LEVELS OF MY MIND TO PENETRATE MY SUBCONSCIOUS AND TO EXPAND AND INSPIRE MY SUPERCONSCIOUS MIND. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE!!!
By carefully reading NEXUS and reflecting on the philosophical insights inherent throughout the book I found that I could tap into my deepest inner centre of being- my inner source of strength, wisdom and compassion...what a discovery!!!
I heard about NEXUS from a friend and that is why I bought the book. I told another friend about NEXUS but she had already just finished reading it and was most impressed.
It seems that people everywhere are suddenly experiencing an intense attraction to NEXUS, one of the most valuable books I've read in a long time.
Another new age novel that I highly recommend is The Saint, the Surfer, and the CEO: A Remarkable Story About Living Your Heart's Desires
Spiritually Uplifting.......2007-05-21
Every once in a while you come across a book that resonates at a deeper soulful level. "Nexus: A Neo Novel" is one of those books that touches you through a spiritual journey of transformation of people in the book. Their transformation is an inner one at the level of their heart and psyche.
For Logan Andrews the transformation requires that he move from negative thoughts and emotions to positive ones. This task is fraught with difficulties, since even at a spiritual retreat intended to help people find the centre of their being called the Nexus, Logan is confronted with his greatest loss as he meets his ex, Sarah.
I really liked the sub-plot with Steven, an arrogant millionaire, who at first is irritating but in time he grows on you and becomes an endearing person. Steven believes that money is the answer to life's problems but has he lost his way?
Even though the writers of "Nexus" have their own unique voice, still this book reminds me of other visionary writers like James Redfield, Carlos Castaneda and Dan Millman. I highly recommend "Nexus" as a deeply moving experience of personal transformation whose message spiritual readers will most appreciate.
Powerful Insights.......2007-04-23
The appeal of "Nexus" lies in an original story that is fast-paced and chock-full of powerful insights. This book is about transformation as an organic process.
The novel is unique as a collaborative effort by two authors who have successfully integrated their writing into an inspiring narrative. This book explores the ups and downs of spiritual life through the journey of people at a spiritual retreat and we can relate their experiences to our own life.
I love this book for its piercing insights and a memorable soulful journey. "Nexus" reminds me of books like "The Celestine Prophecy," "The Life of Pi" and "The Alchemist" - some other books that I've enjoyed reading.

It is what it is.......2007-03-03
Well, I picked this little number up years ago because my local bookstore had reduced it to a dollar in its post-holiday sale, and it languished on my shelf for nearly a decade before I finally decided to look into it. It wasn't quite I was expecting, which is not necessarily either a good or bad thing.
My initial observation: it's shorter than it looks, which, since it resembles a pamphlet, is really saying something. The print is large, and the pages are elaborately, though repetitively, decorated. The result is that what one might assume is a short novel (given the trade paperback format) turns out to be a long short story, and the bottom line is that it isn't really worth it. For a story this short, the visual presentation would have to be more elaborate and outstanding than it is to justify the price.
Oh, the story? It's not bad. Some of the reviewers are referring to it as a children's story. That's a little ambiguous; I, at least, never got the impression that it was intended solely for children. It is a fairy tale, no question about that, though a little longer and more involved than most, and it's generally nonironic and therefore is susceptible to the predictability of the form. For what it is, though, it's well-done. My understanding is that McCaffrey has a few more of these sorts of books. I think the reader would react more positively if they had all been combined into a single volume and appropriately priced.
In short: read it, but don't buy it at full price.
If I had only known ..........2006-08-29
Very good book for kids - and quite pleasant for adults but If I had understood it was a kids book I might not have bought it.
another great.......2006-06-25
This is one of McCaffrey's shorter stories for juveniles. It is about a princess who runs away to avoid an arranged marriage with a much older man. The princess uses her knowledge of flora and fauna in order to escape and survive - but her knowledge is all gleaned from books, so it is more difficult than she believes. However, she perseveres, and she is joined by a waif of a boy who has been beaten and starved. They form a friendship that enables them to survive in the woods on their own - but without either knowing the other's past. I took this to be a story about trust, faith, and love.
The Best of Anne McCaffrey.......2004-10-04
This was the first Anne McCaffrey book I read. It's my favorite book by her so far. The plot is absorbing and different. Meanne and Wisp both hide their pasts from each other (for good reason), and yet if they had revealed their histories things might not have turned out better after all. The language and art are intricate yet delicate. Absolutely stunning.
This deseves a better customer rating!.......2002-08-11
I think this was an enchanting and charming short story. I normally don't read short stories, but the description was quite intriguing. It a little over 90 pages so I finished it rather quickly, but I loved it nontheless. I bought the book as soon as I had put it down. I admit MeAnn and Wisp's characters could have been expanded to make them more realistic, but the setting was beautifull described and the plot was completely original. This was the first Anne McCaffrey book I ever read, although some of my other family members have read many of her Dragonrider series. This book got me interested in her as an author and her other works. I wish the story could have been longer, but it stands out as it is. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Super!.......2007-01-10
Oh my gosh! My daughter loves Tim Burton and when I saw this set, I had to get it for her for Christmas. It is very unique and a must for Burton addicts.
The Best of Burton!.......2007-01-10
I purchased this set for a friend and She loved it! It looks great out of the box and the figures are great! I love it!
Great product if you don't plan to use.......2006-01-07
I love my Stick Boy and Match Girl figurines that come with this set, but I ran into one little problem when I was going to send one of the cards to a friend--the cards don't fit in their envelopes. With a little cramming, I finally got it in there, but it was bow-shaped because the card was just a bit too large for the tiny envelope. This is a unique and fun product, but I don't recommend it if you are actually planning to use the cards.
Very Cool Gift.......2005-11-30
I bought this as a gift for my girlfriend. She is into odd art and objects and this was just the thing. She has read Tim Burton's book, but enjoys his art work more than the stories, thus I felt like this would be a good gift. Nicely packaged and even cooler out of the box.
Book Description
Premchand is the most famous Hindi novelist, and Godaan is Premchand's most celebrated novel. Economic and social conflict in a north Indian village are brilliantly captured in the story of Hori, a poor farmer, and his family's struggle for survival and self-respect. An engaging introduction to India before Independence, Godaan is at once village ethnography, moving human document, and insightful colonial history. Out of print for many years, this translation is regarded as a classic in itself. Includes a new introduction by Vasudha Dalmia. Godaan was first published in 1936.

Read this book.......2001-11-01
I thought this was an excellent book that helped construct a frame for me to begin to understand India. After travelling in the country recently, my memories of the book helped me put into perspective what I saw about the Indians, and the times I saw them taking advantage of each other. More importantly, the book described the search for dignity that people of all countries must share. It is a very complex country and I was glad I read this.
