5 out of 5 stars Lee Parks knows his stuff!.......2007-08-31

I bought this book for my boyfriend. I read it,too. We met Lee Parks at the motorcycle show during the winter and got to personally thank him for a really useful/helpful book. He writes with a sense of humour. That comes in handy for a slightly jumpy beginner motorcyclist like myself. Get this book. You'll refer to it again and again!

5 out of 5 stars Total Control - High Performance Street Riding Techniques.......2007-08-23

Book covers a wide range of subjects including suspension set-up, rider attitude and fitness, conquering riding fear, motorcycle/rider aerodynamics. It concentrates on traction management, different ways a rider can conserve traction as curves are negotiated - places where many motorcyclists crash. Techniques are well described and diagrammed, and are applicable on the track as well as the street. Practice guides are included and parallel Lee's Advanced Riding Clinic course. Book makes a good supplement to the course. Both novice and experienced riders can gain valuable information from reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Top marks.......2007-08-22

Top marks for a book well written. Being only new to the motorbike riding scene, this easy to read and understand book is great for the beginner. Has lots of hints and tips to take on board. I hightly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn the ride.

5 out of 5 stars Great read, even for a scooterist!.......2007-08-14

I was apprehensive of this book by looking at the cover and seeing a sport bike. As I began to read, however, it pertains to anything motorized on two wheels. It is well written and easy to understand and easily applicable to any given riding style.

3 out of 5 stars Great information but..........2007-08-06

The book is full of very useful information and techniques for street and track riding and is a great addition to any motorcyclist's collection of books on riding technique.

The thing that ruined it for me was the author's picture (head shot with different and sometimes goofy expressions) on each chapter's beginning... I found it a bit annoying.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best Book on Practicle Riding Technique.......2007-09-25

I've read a lot of books on riding over the past several years with the goals of improving my technique and having an overall more enjoyable and safer ride. By far the beset book I've read to date is Keith Code's Twist of the Wrist 2. This book is a very complete analysis of the physics of riding presented in a very understandable format that includes pictures and tips. Understanding the dynamics of traction and how those dynamics change during cornering, braking, and acceleration has really improved my riding and my confidence. While this book is targeted at sport bike riders the information applies to all including Harley-Davidson riders. I highly recommend Twist of the Wrist 2. Note, the first book in the series is also very good but not necessary if you buy the second.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Keith !!.......2007-09-01

If you want to know what the hell you are doing on a motorcycle and how to improve you skills, control and speed... Get anything by Keith! This is as his other books are; interesting informative and enlightening. Enormously helpful.

3 out of 5 stars more of the same.......2007-08-21

if you liked the first one, you will probably like this one too. I don't think it added a ton, but was still helpful, particularly in where you should "spend" your focus while riding.

3 out of 5 stars useful but insulting.......2007-06-16

Some info in here is good, but Code really needs to give his readers a bit more credit. I don't need Keith Code to tell me what "available," "constantly," or "hunting" means, all words helpfully defined. I also have a pretty good idea what an "exit" is, thanks. Save yourself some dough and get "Total Control" or "Sport Riding Techniques" both excellent for sport riders.

5 out of 5 stars Understand how to ride your bike, and why the how!.......2007-06-13

A fantastic book that truly unravels the art of riding a sportsbike. It explains in simple terms what happens when you do certain things (eg throttle off), why you should not, what to do to counteract the natural reactions and why this works.

The ability to explain the mechanical laws being applied in such a way that you can understand what happens, and how to use it to your advantage enables you to calmly apply the principles and techniques.

Quite simply the best instructional book I have read.

Book Description

An angel spreads his wings. . . .

Sonny Barger is the number-one spokesman for the motorcycle experience. His New York Times bestseller, Hell's Angel, was an exhilarating history of his adventures with the world's most notorious motorcycle club. Now he brings us rousing, moving, and wildly entertaining true stories of his renegade brothers and sisters in the relentless pursuit of liberty, individuality, and the "ultimate ride."

And what stories he has to tell -- freewheeling, bare-knuckle tales of brawls and battles, brotherhood, breathtaking adventures, crazy quests, and the inevitable classic scrapes with "John Law." The most colorful legends and unforgettable characters of biker lore come alive in this book. In addition, celebrities like Steve McQueen, Johnny Paycheck, and David Crosby thunder through these pages in a sensational collection of rebel tales that runs the gamut from poignant and inspiring to thrilling and utterly outrageous.

Whether you ride, have never ridden, or dream of riding, Ridin' High, Livin' Free is a reading experience you won't soon forget -- a fascinating glimpse into a unique culture of freedom that recognizes only one commandment: the code of the road.

I bought this book for my brother-in-law. So I had to ask him what he thought. He told me how much he enjoyed the book. So buy this book for anybody that is a biker or a biker at heart.

4 out of 5 stars Stories from the road. .......2006-12-31

This isn't really a biography, but more of a collection of stories from Sonny Barger. A lot of them are very funny, and some of them are tales from the road that would make anyone want to hop on a motorcycle. The problem with this book is the introduction when Sonny Barger tells you that some of the stories may be true, and some of them may not be true. He leaves it up to you as you read, but either way the stories are fun to read, and some of them will have you laughing for quite awhile. He even goes outside of the Hell's Angels into other clubs he's aware of and other people he knows sharing stores from them, one of them was on the Dragons leader who was about to buy a Honda until his club members knocked on his door and asked him if it was true.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first.......2005-10-13

Book of short stories of members and events. Kinda left me wanting more.

3 out of 5 stars Not as bad as some, worse than others.......2005-04-26

I was excited when this came out, as I was going through a bit of hero worship regarding bikers. Of course, now years later and a motorcyclist myself, my awe of this life-style has paled.

Barger has to be given credit for where it is due. He's managed to make money of the Hell's Angels for fifty years now. That's pretty impressive. And to be willing to openly discuss portions of his life in that society takes guts. However, this book falls short in many areas.

One, the few stories that relate to the Hell's Angels are over-the-top. It's just too hard to believe these exploits.

Two, the non-Hell's Angels stories aren't any better. The picture painted of bikers throughout this book is that they are greasy, dirty, smelly and disgusting. Even the women profiled here are portrayed as little more than tramps.

Three, we're subjected to Barger's attempt at fiction. Atleast it's only boring, unlike his actual fiction book (DEAD IN FIVE HEARTBEATS), which is a fictionalization of his autobiography with some preposterous action sequences thrown in.

So, if you're really into juvenille biker stories, this is up your alley. If not, but you want to explore this genre, there are plenty of better books available.

Book Description

Riding High is packed with untold episodes from the Jupiter journey - his confrontations with a murderous military in Chile, his farcical arrest in India, bizarre customs in Thailand and Malaysia, his hilarious entanglements with a bottle of bad Dubonnet in Ecuador and many more. Simon contrasts them with the touching and turbulent events that followed his return to domesticity, and explains what became of him in 'life after travel.'

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Untold stories,.......2000-06-25

How can one possibly expect someone to tell a 4 year journey in one book? Well that's why Ted Simon wrote a "second" Jupiters Travel. If you enjoyed Jupiters Travel, dont hesitate to buy Riding High. It gives you more insight into how Ted travelled, what went on in his mind and life. Especially that he shares his "settling down" years made the book a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent follow-up to Jupiter's Travels.......1999-07-24

Point to ponder: Ted Simon muses that "The interruptions ARE the journey". This book causes one to think about priorities in life and what drives them. Ted writes from a British perspective and humor and provides an insightful description of the real world as he passes through it. He describes his travel brilliantly as penetrating life's mysteries. He has been robbed, imprisoned, threatened and hospitalized. He has gone from ecstatic to despondent, but continued on, speaking to the therapeutic effects the motorcycle had on him (and his digestion). He showed keen insight into his fellow travelers as well as the indigenous peoples he observed in the many locales visited. I enjoyed his command of language and appreciated the level to which he writes. I scrambled for my lexicon and index of foreign phrases, for I enjoy the chase of literature. I was mindful of the BMW Anonymous tradition in which a rider can always find help due to his association with the marque. Ted created his own contact list as he moved along. It seems that we are really on a very small planet. I enjoyed the lessons in cultures such as the four Indian groups and an understanding of the caste system from which escape is impossible. Also, Ted provided valuable and interesting tidbits of history and cultural mores which some might find distasteful but are fascinating to me. This book fills in the gaps left by the first book "Jupiter's Travels. It continues to be an account of contradictions and inner struggles of wants and needs, both real and preceived as he marries and attempts to settle down in California. This is a real guy who suffers like the rest of us and shows us grit. I am envious of his experiences for I know that sharing them vicariously is as close as I will get. Read the book!

5 out of 5 stars For the gypsy in all of us (not just bikers) - a must read!.......1999-06-24

I read this book... oh! so, so many years ago as a fresh undergraduate in England and, twenty years hence,is among the handful of books I remember vividly. I was drawn to the book simply because I had planned a similar trip in 1975(hitch-hiking) and never got to do it. Being from the East I can vouch for a number of his Asian narratives and some of his Mid-Eastern stories (I was later based in that region). His free-wheeeling (no pun intended) style of story telling is punctuated with enough humor and philosophy to make it a wonderful read. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Jupiter Rides Again!.......1999-06-09

Riding High is a wonderful companion to JupiterÕs Travels. In it Ted Simon elaborates upon his four-year trip around the world and he also tells us about how hard it was for him to come to terms with journeyÕs end! Settling into married life in Mill Valley is a far cry from living a constantly changing, exciting life in the glorious here and now for four years! Ted makes us feel his struggle to adapt. He does this very tellingly by interspersing some domestic scenes with on-the road scenes. For myself, I felt claustrophobic when I read about his domestic life and longed for him to be on the road again. However, I think these scenes help us understand his dilemma: how can he reconcile a longing to be on the move with a yearning for the simple life in one place? It becomes apparent that Ted, although a compassionate and friendly person, is at heart a bit of a lone wolf! All the travel scenes are great, particularly those in India and South America and the book is full of fascinating information and insights, all of which Ted shares with us in his usual honest, articulate and engaging way.

"D. Wayne is the first biography of America's premier horse trainer. Love him or not--and few horse players are ambivalent--Lukas is racing's most successful trainer and has changed his sport. DeVito's richly detailed account is sympathetic but hardly uncritical."--Louisville Courier Journal

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars D.Wayne: The High-Rolling and fast times of America's Premier Horse Trainer.......2006-04-13

A great read, not just for the racing enthusiast, but anyone who loves sports. D.Wayne Lukas wasn't just a horse trainer, he was a motivator as well, and this book highlights his success with horses and people.

      1 out of 5 stars Outran--Absolute Glue.......2002-06-22

A true shame. What purports to be a definitive biography is mostly a paraphrase of several articles and passages from other books.
No trainer in this lifetime influenced the Sport of Kings more than D. Wayne Lukas. His story deserves the treatment of a quality writer and editor. However, the team that conditioned this offering either lacked those qualities (which I honestly doubt), or they simply didn't care to get it right. The book is filled with inaccuracies and misspellings. It is disjointed and frustrating to read.
Readers will find themselves constantly composing a letter to the publisher in their mind. If you are thinking of purchasing this book, wait for the softcover. Instead try Joe Drape's recent account of the triple crown series or try to find Sports Illustrated articles about Lukas.
      Specious at best.

1 out of 5 stars Inacuracies Spoil Substance.......2002-06-01

While a worthy topic, the incredible number of inacuracies (e.g., in the same paragraph, both Jeff Fell and Jacinto Vasquez were listed as the rider of Pleasant Colony in the '81 KY Derby. Nevermind that the rider was actually Jorge Velasquez...) make the book a frustrating and difficult read. The author also repeatedly calls colts "she." Wayne Lukas is a very complex figure, both loved and scorned. His tale deserves to be told, but it should be done much better than this.

1 out of 5 stars As entertaining as a soap opera.......2002-05-24

Save your money...This book isn't worth the paper in which it is written.

2 out of 5 stars This book breaks slow and never recovers.......2002-05-20

Inaccuracies aside and there are a lot of them (Northern Dancer being referred to as Native Dancer, etc.) This book is poorly written, nonlinear storytelling being a major fault. The author jumps back in forth in time when discussing horses and races. There also is nothing really new revealed in this book as it's mostly a rehash of already well published facts. Finally it doesn't help that Wayne comes off as humorless and unsympathetic here as he does in real life.

        Book Description

Riding the High Wire is the first comprehensive history of aerial mine tramways in the American West, describing their place in the evolution of mining after 1870. Robert A. Trennert shows how the mid-nineteenth century development of wire rope manufacturing made it possible for American entrepreneurs such as Andrew S. Hallidie and Charles Huson to begin erecting single-rope tramways in the 1870s and 1880s. Their inventions were followed by the more substantial double-rope systems imported from Europe. By the turn of the century, aerial tramways were common throughout western mining regions, hauling everything from gold and silver ore to coal and salt and changing the face of the industry.

Aerial mine tramways proved to have a special fascination; people often rode them for a thrill, sometimes with disastrous results. They were also very temperamental, needed constant attention, and were prone to accidents. The years between 1900 and 1920 saw the operation of some of the west's most spectacular tramways, but the decline in high-country mining beginning in the 1920s--coupled with the development of more efficient means of transportation--made this technology all but obsolete by the end of the Second World War.

Historians and the general reader will be equally enthralled by Trennert's fascinating story of the rise and fall of aerial mine tramways.

        4 out of 5 stars Riding High.......2005-08-11

This book is about a cowboy name Dike Flanders who has a ranch; but he never faced a challenge like movies star Victoria Thornton an actress. So she has to ride a horse in her next movie; but she hates horses. By the way at the end of this book Dike and Victoria fall in love.
I recommend this book to those teenagers who like to have adventure, and to those who like to have fun. Also this book is connected to my life in the way that sometimes I want to do things which I can't do but finally I try and it comes true. Then I have another connection with this book and this connection is; when I start my first year in high school I was worried to make friends. The way I was worried to make friends was because I had my friends in middle school, and I thought that the high school students were not the same as middle school students. But it wasn't true because I met a guy who became my best friend, and right now we both are in love like in this book.
In my opinion this book is kind of nice because it teaches you how you can learn something that you don't know before. Also, as you read this book you will learn that if you can't do one thing doesn't mean that you don't know how to do other things. I am a 100% percent sure that if you read this book you would be interested in learning more about Janet Dailey's stories.

5 out of 5 stars Riding the High Wire, Aerial Mine Tramways in the West.......2004-03-03

Riding the High Wire, Aerial Mine Tramways in the West is an interesting quick read with many historic photographs. The book covers an important and neglected portion of early Western American mining history. The author is certainly knowledgeable, and his interest in the topic makes the book interesting to read.
