3 out of 5 stars NICE ATLAS, CUT-THROAT PRICE.......2003-03-30

The biggest obstacle in the way of this beautifully illustrated atlas is its rather unreasonable price-tag. Its publisher, (and authors), did overlook the fact that there are lots of moderately priced equivalents out there in the market.
Nevertheless, anyone who goes ahead and purchase this atlas will appreciate its versatile accomplishments. It is very practical, and included high resolution photographs and micrographs.
"Atlas of Human Parasitology" has a unique organization, which enabled it to provide comprehensive laboratory information. Every specimen it portrayed was labelled and analyzed in details. There is complementary taxonomical description in each case. This is a well-compiled atlas, but I still maintain that its price is a great barrier.

5 out of 5 stars A very good bench atlas.......2001-09-09

I use this book on the bench in the microbiology department and I find the clarity and amount of photos extreemly useful. The other good features are the lifecycles and the methods present within the book. The book is sturdily bound and printed on high quality paper I would recomend this book to any laboratory, or person interested in parasitology.

Very technically informative. Super detailed. Perhaps a bit over the average flock owner's head.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book.......2007-05-15

As a poultry extensionist, this is by far one of my favorites to recommend for those who raise and rear poultry that have had some reoccuring problems! Gail really does put situations into understandable terms for the everyday poultry enthusiast. If you have raised poultry, this one should be on your shelf or at least in easy reach.

4 out of 5 stars Good all around disease book.......2007-04-18

This book is very informative. It lists not only the different diseases that affect chickens, it also provides you with a symptom list. Therefore, you can look up a specific poultry disease, or you can look up the symptoms that your chicken is having and do a little investigating. Very useful. This book allows you to do your own detective work to a point (sometimes you still need a specialist). I was very impressed that it detailed acquired, passive, and artificial immunity. These are terms that are used in the medical field and her explanations in my opinion were very accurate. A book that helps you make a diagnosis as well as teach you how to PREVENT these diseases. I found it useful.

5 out of 5 stars The Chicken Health Handbook.......2007-03-18

I first reviewed this book through the library. I found it to be written in a language that is easy to understand and straightforward about the information contained in it. She lists all types of problems with chickens that could come up. I purchased my copy for my home library so that I always have this information on hand to help me diagnose my chickens and their possible health problems. I feel that it is a must for any chicken keeper.

4 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-01-17

I haven't gotten all the way to the end of the book yet but thus far it is a very interesting book and contains a lot of useful information. If you own chickens I believe it is a must have.

Book Description

A year ago, Cal Thompson was a college freshman more interested in meeting girls and partying than in attending biology class. Now, after a fateful encounter with a mysterious woman named Morgan, biology has become, literally, Cal's life.

Cal was infected by a parasite that has a truly horrifying effect on its host. Cal himself is a carrier, unchanged by the parasite, but he's infected the girlfriends he's had since Morgan. All three have turned into the ravening ghouls Cal calls Peeps. The rest of us know them as vampires. It's Cal's job to hunt them down before they can create more of their kind. . . .

Bursting with the sharp intelligence and sly humor that are fast becoming his trademark, Scott Westerfeld's novel is an utterly original take on an archetype of horror.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars interesting but not great.......2007-10-06

Having recently been thrust into the literary world of vampires this book was a nice easy read with a somewhat realistic plot. Not as good as some other westerfeld books but worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars A new take on an old monster.......2007-09-03

I was going to say this is one of Scott Westerfeld's earlier novels, but they all seem to have come onto the scene around 2005. Instead I'll say this, it's one that's set in New York City.

So, here's a reason to advocate abstinence only sex education: You can turn into a vampire if you exchange saliva with the wrong person. Cal, unfortunately, misses out on this lesson--so after a drunken one night stand he ends up as a vampire. As you might have guessed, these are not your grandmother's vampires. Sure, the legends are the same, but that's about it. Because in Westerfeld's story, vampirism is a disease spread by a little parasite called Toxoplasma. So, instead of being called vampires, Cal and others who have been infected (or are carriers) are called "Parasite Positives" or "Peeps" for short.

The upshot is that Cal is recruited by a secret government organization to hunt peeps and especially to capture those that he infected. Then he has to find the girl who made him a carrier. Sounds simple, right? Think again. As Cal gets closer to tracking down his progenitor things keep getting more complicated until everything Cal thought he knew to be true is thrown into question.

Let me also say that you will never look at rats, or cats, the same way after reading this novel. There is something about a cat with a vampiric parasite that is just so much more appealing than a normal one.

The even numbered chapters of this book don't directly relate to the action-packed plot described above. Instead, chapter by chapter, Cal acquaints us with the world of parasitology (you might want to keep the Purel handy for certain segments). Some readers might find these narrative "interruptions" to be a bit annoying and unecessary, I'd politely disagree saying that the information is interesting and, well, cool. Even if you skip all the others, read chapter four. It's relevant (I also saw Scott Westerfeld at a reading where he read this section of the book and it was ah-may-zing).

So, while the parasite information might be icky, the book is awesome. The story is really fast-paced and has a lot of action and suspense. Lots of chapters end on cliff hangers that make you want to read that much faster. Even more exciting, the book is just as enjoyable for male and female readers (not too gory, not too mushy--a happy medium). Cal is a likable narrator as well as a reliable one--readers know everything that he does.

My only issue with the novel comes at the last thirty some odd pages because it got confusing. At this point, Call learns a lot of new information which, of course, the readers also have to digest. Combined with the fast pace, it got a little hard to follow everything. In fact, I had to reread the last couple of chapters to be sure I knew what was going on.

Confusion aside, the story was awesome. I love Scott Westerfeld unconditionally, but this book was lots of fun to read. The set up and early chapters prepare you for one kind of book, but by the end it's something entirely different. If you want a new take on an old monster, Peeps is your book.

1 out of 5 stars Not Rad.......2007-09-01

This book was soooo bad. The only slightly interesting part was when she learned how to skateboard. And that was only brief, and dampened when she bit the dude who was teaching her. It was totally not cool since Skander was the only interesting person in the book. All I can say is that I am surprised that so many people reviewed this book well. And if you still aren't convinced then let me tell about the llama herding in chapter 3!

5 out of 5 stars Westerfeld's done it again -- fast paced and thoroughly enjoyable.......2007-07-23

I must say, before I ever picked up this book I knew it had to be good. Vampires, Scott Westerfeld, and what promised to be an exciting story? It sounded too good to be true. But it wasn't. This was, and still remains to be, one of the best books I have read in a very long time.

I have anguished in the fast that the day after I bought the book I had it in the cafeteria with me, and I walked away from the table for no more than a minute, to clean up after my friends had left for class, and when I returned someone had stolen it. I was already so immersed after having read it all through the day that I was distraught. Alas, I never found it. But I had considered taking some major action and vowed to kill whoever took it. That's how good it was-- right from the begining.

It starts with a peep, or part vampire, who is searching for a vampire who could be a danger to other people. Scott Westerfeld immediately sets the mood and explains only enough to keep you wondering, but nonthless well informed.

The story is good enough on its own, but throughout the book, inbetween every chapter, is a short and infomative piece on a various parasite. Though I didn't realize it at first each had a twisted relavence to the story. So just when you were fighting for breath because of some very close escape or romantic moment, he would suddenly break into something about a repulsing little bug or worm. It was all so well layed out, and though you may think the change would be jaring is slipped smoothly into this different kind of storytelling. Cleverly using the main charcter as a narrator I sometimes even failed to notice that he wasn't simply having a conversation with someone.

I have to admit, the book was a fair bit confusing at times, but I suspect it was all to keep the reader on their toes. The twist at the end was almost dissapointing to me at first, because I had like how the story was going to far, but it set it up nicely for the sequal. Full of romance--and lust, and seemingly bloodthirsty vampires, and huge killer worms, and intelligent catsruling armies, it's a true Scott Westerfeld book, refusing to stay in the shadow of his other great works such as "Pretties" and "Midnighters".

This book is so worth buying and I am so very dissapointed that it was stolen because I would have loved to read this over and over again.

Inccidentally, I found out that our school library had a copy and so, after about a week of frantically searching and planning how I could most painfully torture who took it, I begrudgingly read the ratty old copy that was supplied for me. Until the end of the school year I still continued (halfheartedly) to look for it. It still upsets me to think about it. I earned that money and I bought the book for MY personal library. It was MY truest luffy (yeah that's what I call books). MINE. And some theif took it. Sorry for the rant. ^_^

5 out of 5 stars Peeps Rocks.......2007-04-26

Peeps is a book about a virus that is spreads by Blood, Saliva, and bodily fluids. When you get infected with the virus you get super-human strength, the ability to see in the dark, a fear of the light, hunger for flesh, and hating the things you used to love. There is a secret organization called the Night Watch. They hunt the evil Peeps or Parasite Positives. Cal is a carrier, which means he has the super powers but he can control it and he doesn't want to eat people. He works for the Night Watch and hunts down his old girlfriends whom he turned into Peeps.

My favorite part of the book is when Cal goes down to the bottom of the apartment building. There were thousands of rats in a huge swimming pool. Then Cal sees the Cat. It was a Peep so it was controlling the rats. He had never seen a cat be parasite positive so it was pretty amazing. There was a big hole in the middle of the pool where the rats and the cat could go down. Then the cat came up to him and he realized that it was family to him, which means it was the cat that infected the person that infected him. Then one of the ancient worms passed beneath and the rats went crazy.

I recommend this book 100%. It is a great book for people who like to get scared and grossed out. I really like that between the chapters there was little blurbs of information about diseases and parasites. This is also a good book for people who like supernatural phenomenon and stuff like that. All in all it is a great book and one of the best by Scott Westerfeld.

Many books provoke a visceral reaction, but few really make you itch. Science writer Carl Zimmer's Parasite Rex does just that, provoking a deliciously creepy sense of paranoia in the reader as it explores a long-misunderstood realm of science. While entomologists love to announce that there are more species of insects than all other animals combined, few parasitologists choose to trump that by reminding us that "parasites may outnumber free-living species four to one." That figure is based on the multicellular chauvinism of the 19th century, which excludes bacteria and fungi from consideration (athlete's foot, anyone?), but Zimmer looks at the E. coli in our guts as well as the worms, flukes, mites, and other critters that earn a healthy living at our expense--and the expense of our domesticated plants and animals.

The author traveled to Africa to see firsthand the effects of sleeping sickness and river blindness. He learned from physicians and researchers that the parasites that wreak so much havoc are much more than the simple degenerates we've taken them for. Their complex adaptations to their environments--us--are as lovely and awe-inspiring as any eye or wing. The examples of hormonal and other behavioral control of hosts, causing changes in feeding habits and other life essentials, are chilling when personalized. Zimmer knows his subject well, and his writing, while robust and affecting, never descends to the all-too-easy gross-out. You wouldn't expect to find respect for a tapeworm, but Parasite Rex will show you how beautiful Earth's truly dominant life forms are. --Rob Lightner

Book Description

IMAGINE A WORLD WHERE parasites control the minds of their hosts, sending them to their destruction.

IMAGINE A WORLD WHERE parasites are masters of chemical warfare and camouflage, able to cloak themselves with their hosts' own molecules.

IMAGINE A WORLD WHERE parasites steer the course of evolution, where the majority of species are parasites.

WELCOME TO EARTH.

For centuries, parasites have lived in nightmares, horror stories, and in the darkest shadows of science. Yet these creatures are among the world's most successful and sophisticated organisms. In Parasite Rex, Carl Zimmer deftly balances the scientific and the disgusting as he takes readers on a fantastic voyage. Traveling from the steamy jungles of Costa Rica to the fetid parasite haven of southern Sudan, Zimmer graphically brings to life how parasites can change DNA, rewire the brain, make men more distrustful and women more outgoing, and turn hosts into the living dead.

This thorough, gracefully written book brings parasites out into the open and uncovers what they can teach us about the most fundamental survival tactics in the universe.

Download Description

For decades parasites were the pariahs of science, considered too aberrant and insignificant to study. Only recently have biologists begun to appreciate that these diverse and complex organisms are the most highly evolved life forms on earth. In this compelling, gracefully written work of popular science, Carl Zimmer takes us on a tour of the strange and bizarre world that parasites inhabit -- and delightfully recounts the fantastic voyages of these wonders of creation.

Parasites can: rewrite DNA; rewire the brain; genetically engineer viruses as weapons; and turn healthy hosts into the living dead. From a lab in California where the grisly secrets of parasitic wasps are coming to light, to remote Sudan, where the subtle horror of sleeping sickness is threatening millions of lives, Parasite Rex follows researchers in parasitology, one of the hottest fields in biology, as they attempt to penetrate the mysteries of these omnipresent creatures who control evolution, ecosystems, and perhaps the future of the human race. It is life science at its most thrilling -- by a writer who, according to John Horgan, "brings evolutionary biology to life more vividly than anyone in recent memory".

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very interesting and important, if a bit plodding.......2007-09-24

The book its an excellent review of the parasites among us. It also does not miss any key topics, although some of them it glosses over a bit. For example, the chapeter on how these criters beat our immune system could have been much better and more detailed, particularly as this was for me one of the key quesitons I had as I continued to read. While we are told that basically it is too costly for organisms to proof themselves against even particular parasites, that was never explained in sufficient detail. On the whole, however, it covers the important parasite concepts and the evolutionary twists and turns in the battle between parasites and their hosts, and responsibly differentiates scientific speculation from experimental fact.

Perhaps the biggest flaw in the book is the lack of diagrams and its minimal number of photos. One of the coolest things about parasites is how gross they are and I wanted to see more of them. Also the same parasites seemed to keep coming up as examples of everything. Perhaps there are only so many types of parasites so it just doesn't matter whether one discusses blood flukes of humans or some other animal. But the book makes bold statements about how much more diverse parasites are than so called "free living" organisms, so it seemed a bit weird to continually be presnted with the "usual suspects" as examples of each of the parasitic principles.

The writing is clear and well organized, but goes on too long and is repetitive in places. This would probably have been a better book if were 30 pages shorter. But that's a quibble.

On the whole, a very good book that should interest anyone interested in natural systems and evolution, and parasites in particular.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-07-12

This book literally changed how I view EVERYTHING. It is as incredible as it is scary. Fantastic work, Mr. Zimmer.

5 out of 5 stars Plenty of Bugs to Creep You Out .......2007-03-19

Wow. That's all I really need to say about "Parasite Rex: Inside the Bizarre World of Nature's Most Dangerous Creatures" by Carl Zimmer. The book is gross and alarming, and you simply cannot stop reading it for a second. Malaria-spreading mosquitoes, elephantiasis-causing worms, gender-altering slugs, and all sorts of creepy things that turn their hosts into zombies or free meals or living cocoons for their young are the "heroes" of this nonfiction work, which talks about how each parasite has adapted to survive in our world.

"Parasite Rex" is easy to read and incorporates a lot of ecology and physiology, both written in a clear and understandable way. Plus, there are some nasty photos with even nastier captions (1.3 billion people have hookworms inside them). This book is a fascinating read for anyone of any age, no matter if they are interested in parasites or not. Believe me, once you read it, you will see parasites (and the workings of the human body) in a completely different light. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely........2006-10-17

Carl Zimmer, Parasite Rex (The Free Press, 2000)

The Free Press has a tendency to put out important books full of thick, barely readable language that make one consider, say, spending a few evenings on the rack as acceptable alternative entertainment. Parasite Rex is not one of them. It's an important book, yes, but it's also a fascinating one. It's readable, which is something uncommon not only in Free Press titles, but in nonfiction in general, and even if there were nothing else to make it stand out from the crowd, that would make this an above-average book by itself.

It is not, however, the only thing that bumps the rating on this one up a tad. It's a fun book, pure and simple. "Fun" is, perhaps, not the word that immediately springs to mind when talking about a book that explores the world of, to be vulgar about it, the creepy-crawly. But Zimmer approaches his subject with an enthusiasm (and, at times, a revulsion he doesn't keep hidden, much to the annoyance of at least one of his interviewees) that's, if you'll pardon the pun, infectious. Parasites have gotten a bad name over the years, since early scientists thought of them as animals going backwards on the evolutionary scale, and it's Zimmer's mission here to dispel that myth by showing some of the many interesting ways in which various species of parasite have evolved along with their hosts over the years. The picture he paints is incredible.

More to the point, however, is the cautionary tale underlying the book, the one where Zimmer points out that, on a microscopic level, some of the things we humans do to get rid of parasites have the same effect on our bodies that the introduction of rabbits and cane toads to Australia did on the ecosystem there (for example, Zimmer draws an interesting parallel between the increasing effectiveness of the fight against intestinal parasites and the explosive rise of Crohn's Disease). Yes, Zimmer argues, there are some nasties that we'd be much better off without, because when we contract them, they kill us outright. But we should get to know our parasites a little more before deciding they're all out to take over the world. It's the kind of hypothesis one doesn't hear too often, and Zimmer presents it in such a way that the reader is beguiled into listening. Nice work, this. *** ½

5 out of 5 stars creepy, horrifying, fascinating.......2006-09-07

I picked up this book to read after seeing a science show on television about snails whose brains were controlled by parasites. These creatures were actually visible to the eye, inside the antenna of the snails! In "Parasite Rex", Carl Zimmer tells the grotesque and horrifying and astonishing ways that parasites affect our world. The adaptations these organisms have made to survive and reproduce are amazing, and some of them could not be rivaled by the imagination of H.P. Lovecraft. In addition to accounts of strange and creepy parasites, Carl Zimmer explains how hosts and parasites have evolved to depend on each other, parasites actually making the host's survival possible or performing a service for the host. Mitocondria are likely to have started out as a parasite in forms of early life. The book is very well written, very interesting, and I feel that I learned a lot about my body and my environment by reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Good but..........2005-12-28

This book is very helpful for fecal identification of most parasites. It does not help you with identification of larvae or adults. The book is also not in color which can be a factor when identifying the differences between some eggs. It also can have more than the necessary information (llamas, pigs, wildlife, humans). Very handy reference manual for egg identification, but would be even better if it contained pictures of larvae and adults.

Book Description

We think of disease as our enemy, something we try to eradicate; germs and infections are things we battle. But in this witty, engaging book, evolutionary biologist Marlene Zuk reveals that, in fact, disease is our partner, not our foe, and is responsible for everything from how we look to how we have sex.

Since the earliest days of life on earth, disease has evolved alongside us. Drawing on the latest research and studies, Zuk explains the role of disease in answering a fascinating range of questions such as: Why do men die younger than women? Why does the average male bird not have a penis? Why do we—and lots of other animals—get STDs? How is our obsession with cleanliness making us sicker? And how can parasites sometimes make us well?

Using her own work on sexual selection as well as a sampling of stories from the natural world, Zuk makes us reconsider the fearsome parasite.

3 out of 5 stars Good Subject--Bad Editing.......2007-07-18

I'm giving this book 3 starts because it has some very fascinating content and the nature of the research should be better understood by everyone. We need to know that there is a serious risk to public health at hand due to the wide spread misuse of antibiotics. So read it! It's important! This review is just warning you that it may take some effort.

To Ms. Zuk and her editors: "Read the 'Accidental Mind' by Dr. Linden before you publish your next 'accessible to the public" science book. Note how you can be clear, concise, and still have a sense of humor. I really got the feeling that no one actually read your book through (while paying attention) before it went to press. You can do better."

5 out of 5 stars Riddled with Life.......2007-07-12

Great read!! I grew up in tropical regions of Latin America where parasites were always considered an enemy to be avoided. It wasn't until I read this book that I realized that not only could I NOT avoid them but in fact I NEEDED them for my very existence! This book is suitably researched and scientific to satisfy any skeptic. It is WONDERFULLY humorous throughout. It is informative as can be. Any layman, even without scientific training, will find this book highly informative, fun, and well worth the read. OK, there are a few passages that bog down a bit, but they are few and far between. The rest is just great. I'm giving this one to several people this Christmas.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-06-23

I bought this book after I heard an interview of the author on a late night radio show. The book was very disappointing to me and I must admit I didn't finish it. I think it may have been the constant gushing about Evolution and Darwin that was boring me.

5 out of 5 stars Disease is treated as an enemy to be eradicated - or should it be something more? .......2007-06-09

Disease is treated as an enemy to be eradicated - or should it be something more? Evolutionary biologist Marlene Zuk here argues that disease is our partner, not a foe: it's evolved alongside humans and is actually essential to health. The latest research and some unusual studies explores the role of disease in longevity, evolution, and the animal and insect as well as human worlds, using the author's on work on sexual selection processes to supplement intriguing stories from nature. An excellent survey, RIDDLED WITH LIFE: FRIENDLY WORMS, LADYBUG SEX, AND THE PARASITES THAT MAKE US WHO WE ARE is a pick not just for school holdings but for the general-interest library strong in popular science and health.

5 out of 5 stars Is sex necessary?.......2007-05-28

I can still close my eyes and see Thurber's little cartoon guy slouching dispiritedly past an embracing couple on the park bench, and asking his famous question.

If he knew that most complex organisms evolved into two sexes because of parasites, he would probably have thrown his jacket over his head and screamed.

Marlene Zuk, a professor of biology at the University of California, provides `parasites' as the answer to many evolutionary conundrums, as she brings us face-to-proboscis with some of the natural world's most bizarre adaptations surrounding the continued survival of genomes, including our own.

What causes auto-immune diseases? Why do female peacocks go for males with the fanciest tail feathers? Are some people more accident-prone than others? Why did Debbie Estis Greenspan invent Dr. Doormat?

Are all of these phenomena caused by parasites? `Yes,' according to Professor Zuk.

If you don't believe that parasitized people have more accidents, read the chapter "Bad but Not Weird: The Real Emerging Diseases." Not only might the parasite that causes toxoplasmosis be responsible for a higher automobile accident rate, it might also trigger schizophrenia:

"Children of mothers who were infected with toxoplasmosis during pregnancy show higher levels of mental retardation, brain malformations, and seizures. Ewald and coworkers believe that the reason more people with schizophrenia are born at certain times of year is that their mothers were more likely to have come into contact with cats and their feces."

"Riddled with Life" presents a very clear thesis: evolution is driven by parasitism. It is backed up by fascinating proofs. I read this book while I was a guest at a friend's house, and couldn't help quoting example after example from Dr. Zuk's research.

The probable driver for the evolution of bedbug sex is particularly bizarre...I just hope I don't reincarnate as a lady bedbug.

Read this book and gross out your own friends. You may never be invited to stay over again, thanks to Professor Zuk's unforgettable examples of parasites in action.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Knowledge for the True Reptile Lover.......2001-07-07

Consider yourself a true reptile lover? Then you should concerned about the well being of your pet. A healthy pet is a happy pet. Keep your pet well-fed and in good hygienic condition is essential. However, it is possible that the reptile may be suffering from parasites without our knowledge (such as through food). This book tells the pet lover what are the various parasites, what symptoms, what cures, etc. It is truly a good book on the topic.

The words, of what I would consider in ideal size, are printed on good quality "glossy" paper and very professional.

I have a copy and I think it's the best book available I can find about the topic. This book that's good in appearance and content. Get it if you are a true reptile lover.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone herp owner should buy 2 of these books!.......2001-06-13

And, at Amazon's price, you can afford to buy two of them--one for you and one for your vet! I did! My vet can't thank me enough, and now I don't have to loan him my book every time I want him to see my veiled chameleon. It would be great to live in a big city with vets that specialized in herps/reptiles; but here in the rest of the real world, there are furry pet vets on every corner who can give excellent medical care to your reptiles and amphibians using Dr. Klingenberg's book.

Key features for you and your vet: 1. Medicine names, dosage for types/weight of different animals, means of administering, side effects, and uses. 2. Photographs of extracted worms and of microscope slides showing various micro-parasites & their eggs. 3. Sketch showing all the worms & parasites in relative size to each other. 4. Tips on "shot-gun" approach to parasite & disease treatment in wild-caught animals, discussion of various cures, discussion of the effects of diseases on your herp, and practical husbandry/keeping/handling/feeding info on how to prevent future reoccurances.

I got this book when I bought my first frog "just-in-case," but I never needed it, never used it, until this year when my chameleon was sick with worms. I was glad I had it and that is when I decided to buy a second copy for my vet's clinic. You can't afford to wait to buy this book until you need this book. You need it now while your animals are healthy!!!

5 out of 5 stars All Amphibian & Reptile Keepers should have this book.......2001-02-24

And you should have it before you need it--as in, before you animal is sick. This is a complete and well done reference guide for those of us who don't need to know the vet manual's textbook explanations and can't afford to own those massive volume collections anyhow. It covers basic diagnosis, examination, equipment, internal and external parasites, medicines, dosages, tips for treating, how to administer meds to differnt types of animals, hygiene information, and, best of all to help your vet out, it contains photographs of microscope slides of what the nematoads or protozoans will look like and sketches of them for identification of relative size.

If you don't have an exotics or herp vet near you, this will help your furry pet vet help your herp. Believe me, I am thankful every day that I got this book when I didn't really need it because it meant the small town horse and dog vet clinic could see my old world chameleon and HELPED me, like they would not have been able to without this book.

5 out of 5 stars Nicely done book, good for vet and pet owner.......2000-10-24

Roger Klingenberg is a well-recognized veterinary expert on reptiles and their parasites. His book is very well done and appropriate for both veterinarians and reptile owners. The combination of clear line drawings and excellent black and white photos clearly demonstrate how to recognize, diagnose and treat parasites of a variety of reptiles. The book is concise, clearly written and includes useful bibliography. For the price it can't be beaten!

This book is excellent abot how paraties find their way into our body and clearly explains how to avoid them and get rid of them/ Great book indeed
very educational. after reading it we surely changed our way of handling food and hygeine and prevention in our daily lives.Highly recommend it to those who want to live healthy and learn about the world of parasites that live in our body.

5 out of 5 stars good information, but..........2006-05-23

Skye Weintraub has definitely put together a great book. At first when she's identifying each parasite, she tells you the "conventional" way of treating each one--which upset me because she's an N.D. But I suppose the pharmaceuticals must be listed as well. Thankfully, later in the book she gives prevention advice as well as herbal remedies. I've learned a lot just researching the internet, but this book taught me even more. I am very glad I bought this book. I started treating myself before I got a hold of this and I wish I had read this first. I've made several mistakes, but hey--I'm still alive! Parasites-and getting rid of them-can be very dangerous. The problem is much more wide-spread than people realize. All these people with unspecified problems (fibromyalgia, CFS, IBS, colitis, etc.) would do well to purchase this book and find out the REAL cause of their ailments. I have been misdiagnosed for years and finally I had to diagnos and treat myself (obviously without using those horrible pharmaceutical drugs). I almost died because of parasites (don't know which ones) and the treatment. It is highly advised to find a good alternative care doctor (one that doesn't use drugs or surgery) before embarking on a cleanse, if in fact you are heavily infested as I am. As far as the reviewer who asked "where's the facts"--the book is not riddled with footnotes (which I appreciate). However, if you look in the back, Skye lists the books that she has used as reference. The only problem I have with the book is the fact that she recommends Grapefruit Seed Extract as a useful antimicrobial. Commercial GSE has been shown to contain methylparabens, triclosan, and benzethonium chloride. These chemicals make the GSE antimicrobial. DO NOT use commercially prepared GSE!!! In Dr. Weintraub's defense, the book was published (in 2000) about the same time as the study by von Woedtke (1999) which showed what the extract really contains; and before the study in 2001 by Gary Takeoka and his group, which confirmed the findings. If these studies were available to her, I don't think she would have recommended the use of GSE in her book. Thankfully, I am intelligent enough to do tons of research, not just trusting one book or source. All in all: a very good book, priced just right, and VERY much worth buying!!

    1 out of 5 stars Where's the research?.......2004-05-05

Where's the research? A lot of generalities and information
that has been tossed around by everyone. Not much substance here!

5 out of 5 stars Must reading for the health-conscious.......2000-04-01

Dr. Weintraub does an excellent job in discussing, in layman's terms, the diseases caused by parasites, as well as their prevention and treatment. Although not publicized, most people in the world have at least one parasite, either of the worm or microscopic variety, and it is much more prevalent in the US than most people realize. Included are numerous statistics on incidences of parasite infestation around the world. Particularly, anyone who travels out of the country needs to read this book. Treatments are listed for each which include both conventional treatments as well as a large variety of alternative treatments. You cannot rely on your physician to automatically 'think' the possibility of parasites if you have a medical complaint, especially, if the symptoms are diffuse. And, even if testing is done, most laboratory tests do not show 'positive' the first time tested, even though the patient may have the parasite. Arm yourself with this book!

ParasiteRex is an interesting book on all the types and varieties of parasites. That book I recommend. This lady lists a few parasites and then preaches a great deal about 'God's organ' and 'Gods diet'... 'God wants you to eat this way...' etc. I'm not quoting verbatim or course ha ha but you get the idea. So I guess if you are Buddist or Muslim you better convert. She seems like a nutcase preacher not a scientist or even a good councelor. *and writes one dull read!*

I do believe in internal cleansing. A product that I feel has worked well for me is at [...]: a total colon and parasite cleansing system. Their ads make it all sound as if everyone has a weird experience, expelling large worms and going to the toilet 8 times a day but my experience was very normal. Might be the benefits are a placebo effect but what the heck..
I use their probiotics and digestive enzymes too. Reading their website seems more informative than this book "Every body has parasites" Do your self a favor and pass on this one. ONe good thing: it is really a tiny book and you can read it in about 20 minutes so if you choose to waste your money you won't be wasting much of your time.

5 out of 5 stars Parasite Removal and more! Solution? read here.......2004-04-20

Since someone had asked for solution / options for parasite removal ..here is something useful to readers....

I was researching for a solution for a while...only recently I found a source which comes recommended by Global Institute for Alternative Medicine. Go to DrNatura.com. Read up on their testimonials. I did for about 4 hours. and was totally hooked and ordered mine....Read up and compare. Make your own decisions. Look out for competitive products which has the bark "Cascara Sagrada Bark" which is not recommended by lots of nutritionists as it causes unwanted diarrhea etc. Here is a warning from one product which contains Cascara...
    "Warnings
This product contains Cascara Sagrada. Read and follow directions carefully. Do not use if you have or develope diarrhea, loose stools, or abdominal pain because Cascara Sagrada may worsen these conditions and be harmful to your health. Consult your physician if you have frequent diarrhea or if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition "

So please do your own research. But I found that DrNatura.com had lots of help where the 1-800 number helps with a human person. ask questions. this is your health. DrNatura.com number is 1-800-877-0414. Why am I taking the time to write this? I dont work for them or in anyway associated. However, I wish someone had mentioned them to me earlier in my life. I just wanted to pass on the information and save you time and possibly your life (by preventing colon cancer and other sickness). Afterall this is a Circle of Life where we help each other

    good luck

BUT it really leaves no remedy to rid yourself of these nasty things except to buy the line of supplements sold by the author's company. And they are expensive!
I was dissapointed that there were no other supplement reccomendations.
