Book Description

Drawing from the collection of the world-renowned Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Bird Songs presents the most notable North American birds including the rediscovered Ivory-billed Woodpecker in a stunning new format. Renowned bird biologist Les Beletsky provides a succinct description of each of the 250 birds profiled, with an emphasis on their distinctive songs. Lavish full-color illustrations accompany each account, while a sleek, built-in digital audio player holds 250 corresponding songs and calls. In his foreword, North American bird expert and distinguished natural historian Jon L. Dunn shares insights gained from a lifetime of passionate study. Complete with the most up-to-date and scientifically accurate information, Bird Songs is the first book to capture the enchantment of these beautiful birds in words, pictures, and song. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, located in Ithaca, New York, is a nonprofit institution focused on birds and whose mission is to interpret and conserve the earth's biological diversity through research. The Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab is the major source of sound recordings of birds for research, education, conservation, the media, and commercial products.

5 out of 5 stars Reading level: Ages 9-12 - I don't think so!?!.......2007-10-01

Great book for my coffee table for people to press the bird numbers. My favorite is the Northern Mockingbird, and my cats never fail to perk up their ears at it.

I've seen birds in my back yard react to different bird songs I played, so I can imagine that a lighter weight book would be great to take on field trips for attracting certain birds.

Some of the owls are eerie sounding, but I love owls (they eat mice, right?), so I play them often. There are others I haven't even heard of, not being a birder. But I'm handling the learning curve, and it's certainly fun!

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginning birders.......2007-09-27

This is now our favorite coffee table book-- although we have to tear it out of the hands of guests in order to have conversation about something else. The sound is excellent. Gave a copy to my sister who also loves it.

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-27

Great book. The pictures and writeups for each bird are good and the sound is pretty good. I wish there were even more calls included for each bird. Great gift for any bird lover.

5 out of 5 stars Cool Book!.......2007-09-26

It is true, the birds will respond if you play the songs outdoors-It caught the attention of many of the woodpeckers In my backyard..I know the birds by sight but needed help with the songs and calls and this is perfect! Great Idea for a book and a must for beginning birdwatchers or just birdlovers....

5 out of 5 stars Very authentic birdsounds!.......2007-09-26

Chickadees respond to the bird calls in this book! What fun! It is encouraging my 4-year old grandson's growing interesting in birding. The only flaw is the index. Not only is the font so small it is nearly unreadable, but the birds are not called by their common names. For example, the "Cardinal" is listed under "American Cardinal".

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-05-15

I'm a teacher and I read the book "Don't let the pigeon ride the bus" and I Loved it. This one is not as good as that one but it is rather cute.

2 out of 5 stars goofy book with rudimentary pictures.......2007-04-11

Not good for babies...this book has bland colors, boring background and the sarcasm doesn't really fit in a kid's book.

3 out of 5 stars pigeon is at it again..........2007-01-10

my students didn't enjoy this story as much as the others that we've read but it is definately on their top 10 list of books to have me read to them. the simple fact that we have just about all of the pigeon books speaks volumes for mo willems ability to capture a first graders attention!

5 out of 5 stars Great books for children of all ages and grown men who love sarcasm.......2007-01-10

My children love this book and all the books by Mo Willems. Buy it and you will not be sorry. My four year old knows all of Willems books by heart now and he received them for Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Humorous/Instructional story for social/emotional development.......2006-11-10

Children remember humorous stories best. The pigeon books I have purchased and read are great stories for reading aloud and for beginning readers. Humorous stories foster a love of reading, the most important tool for learning success.

Book Description

It's getting dark out, but one stubborn Pigeon is NOT going to bed! Toddlers and parents will love this interactive bedtime romp which puts readers back in the driver's seat, deflecting Pigeon's sly trickery as he tries to escape his inevitable bedtime. Will you let him stay up late?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love these books!.......2007-10-01

Mo Willems' Pigeon books are a great collection of books. The text is succinct; great for the younger crowd. The illustrations are simple. And the pigeon character will charm you. Love it!

3 out of 5 stars Cute idea but kids aren't interested........2007-09-29

I think the humor is above the level that the book targets. It ready funny for an adult but my daughters don't like it much.

5 out of 5 stars as good as the others.......2007-09-27

One of my children's favorite books is "Don't let the pigeon drive the bus" so I was hoping that this would stand up to the same humor, and we were not disappointed. My kids (6&3) laughed at all his excuses. And now some nights when they keep thinking of things they need to keep them from going to bed...I can just say "goodnight Pigeon" and they laugh and head to bed.

A great book for anyone with children who think up 999 ways to stay up late!

5 out of 5 stars another pigeon hit.......2007-09-21

My son loves the pigeon books. I don't know why, but he is under 2 and quickly memorizes them. Having loved Bus and Hot Dog, Don't let the pigeon stay up late follows as another success. Every parent of kids two and under should purchase these pigeon books.

5 out of 5 stars Another great addition to the lineup.......2007-09-15

First off, you have to understand these books, while silly and somewhat simple, have an incredible, if unexplainable, appeal to kids, but not necessarily adults. In this book, Pigeon uses a whole list of excuses as to why he's not tired. Slowly, he wears downs and, as with most kids, falls asleep whether he likes it or not. A fun read, especially for parents that have young ones who love to extend out bedtime night after night.

As with all the pigeon books, you have to be a 'creative' reader -use voices, make sure you change the tone and pitch of your voice. The replies made by pigeon are ones we all hear everyday, and reading it with some feeling greatly adds to the enjoyment and appeal of the book. My boys both love this whole series - and while I still have difficulty seeing why they think it's as hilarious as they do, we nevertheless, read and re-read these books over and over.

This is the classic from which many of our staff first learned to read, starting us on a path of unremitting bibliophilia. Are You My Mother? follows a confused baby bird who's been denied the experience of imprinting as he asks cows, planes, and steam shovels the Big Question. In the end he is happily reunited with his maternal parent in a glorious moment of recognition.

Book Description

Illus. in color. A baby bird is hatched while his mother is away. Fallen from his nest, he sets out to look for her and asks everyone he meets -- including a dog, a cow, and a plane -- "Are you my mother?"

5 out of 5 stars Great book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-11

My mom got me this book when i was only a few months old. It is a great book. Since i am older i don't read it as much but i didn't forget about it yet! It has a baby bird who falls out of its nest and goes out looking for its mother and it asks so many animals and it finally finds her.The illustrations are great. I would recommend it to any beginner.

5 out of 5 stars A lovely book!.......2007-07-18

This book could not be sweeter! My 5 yo adores this book. It shows the bond and love a Mother and child have from day one.

1 out of 5 stars YIKES! SCARRY!.......2007-07-17

Not a good book for kids. Being lost and alone, searching for your mother or anyone that looks like you will not only frighten your child but also teach them that they must find someone that looks like them to feel safe and accepted. This book is dated and not child appropriate. :-(

5 out of 5 stars a childhood favorite passed down.......2007-05-15

I am just thrilled to see that this classic is still going strong. I remember this from the early 70s as I was a young girl and my father read this to me daily. And now, I had the priviledge of introducing the book to my daughter about a year ago. It became an instant favorite since it involves all the favorite characters of a toddler's life: conversations with a dog, cow, chicken, cat etc. Parents that enjoy getting creative when reading to their children will love this book!

4 out of 5 stars Still has the same magic.......2007-05-08

I just finished reading "Are you my Mother?" with my daughter, having not heard it since I was a child. This book still posesses the same magic it did for me all those years ago.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for newer bird watcher........2007-03-08

We found your book to be full of beautiful bird pictures and good information. A excellent book especially for the newer back yard bird watcher. An excellent addition and tool for anyones library. A beautiful gift.

3 out of 5 stars Great pictures, information, poor selection of birds.......2007-01-23

I purchased this book for myself and our children to aid us in identifying the birds that are visiting our southern Arizona feeders. Unfortunately I found many of the birds we see were missing from this guide. It's got fantastic pictures, and excellent full page details on each bird which IS included, such as song, nesting habits and duration. I was very impressed with the guides on how to make your own birdfeeders of various types as well as the helpful guide in the back regarding landscaping for birds. Unfortunately, because it's not a regional book, it is proving to be less useful than I hoped. It's a great book to start with, but I think many birdwatchers, even casual ones like myself, will quickly wish for a more comprehensive guide.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, informative on many levels.......2006-12-15

I am new to birdwatching and purchased this book along with Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America. The Sibley guide covers more birds, but the Audubon has all of the common ones that I see in my yard, and has actual photos of the book as opposed to the drawings in the Sibley guide. I find that I refer to both of them frequently, however the Audubon book is one that you can sit down and read, whereas the Sibley one is a true field guide with just a paragraph on each type of bird. The Audobon book is a great starter book, and not only contains information on particular bird species, but also has great information on bird behavior and things you can do to encourge more visitors to your yard. I have enjoyed this book so much I just purchased it as a Christmas gift for my sister who is new to birdwatching also.

5 out of 5 stars excellant book for the money.......2006-08-12

Well illustrated, informative, helpful, perfectly priced.I recomend this book to amateurs and veterans of this hobby, this is a beautiful book easily worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS ONE.......2006-06-23

I have been a rather serious birder for well over fifty years now and when I first saw this book (it was a gift) I almost felt insulted...back yard birder indeed! Well, I was wrong...I admit it. I have actually enjoyed this one far more that several of the many hundred or so more technical books on the subject that inhabit my shelves. This is a wonderful quick reference and is quite well organized. I have interested grandchildern and I not when they are here, which is almost daily, they reach for this volume far more than any of the others. Sharing my passion and hobby with them is great and this work is a wonderful help tool. Recommend it highly.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not sufficient for Certification exam N10-003.......2007-08-19

This review is being written 8-18-2007 for Network+ Exam Cram 2 (2nd Edition). I just took and passed the exam a couple of days ago, and was not overly impressed with this book as a study guide. The two practice exams in the book were much easier than the real exam. The book covers Appletalk which was not mentioned in the exam at all. The exam had more coverage of Novell, especially interworking with Windows, and this topic was not adequately covered in the book. The exam had many troubleshooting problems, and the book did not provide enough practice or techniques in this area. My extensive networking experience in other areas, combined with this book, did help me pass the exam. A more comprehensive book would be better. The practice exams should be rewritten, since good results on them give the reader a false sense of security concerning the real exam.

5 out of 5 stars Introduction to Networking.......2007-07-23

Exam Cram's original edition of Network + was my first literary introduction to networking.

I would recommend this book to anyone starting out in the network industry, or anyone who wants to brush up on the basics.

It covers the major principles of Networking & is a great book whether you plan on taking your Network + exam or not.

5 out of 5 stars Well written, to the point.......2007-07-09

This book is nicely put together covering all the Network+ objectives, although briefly. If you have a background in Networking then this book itself should suffice to prepare you for exam. I was ready to face the exam after going through this book twice and measure up exam questions. Luckily I passed scoring 80% in first attempt. This book has everything that was in the exam, however you have to read it twice or more in order to fully prepare.

5 out of 5 stars Well done.......2007-06-09

This book does not read like a text book, it is written in an easy to understand language. I wish I'd has this for my Network+ class, the textbook was worthless. It will be a good reference later.

My test is only a few days away and I felt Ive learned a whole lot more then I have ever had.

Sesame Street veteran and Emmy Award-winner Mo Willems returns with a fast, funny follow-up to Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!--only this time, the short-tempered pigeon faces his perfect foil in a "special guest star" duckling. In the previous Pigeon book, author and illustrator Willems expertly distilled the escalating emotions of preschoolers all too anxious to get their way. The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog--also a simple and sparsely illustrated story--explores the flip side of that coin, exposing the poker-face persuasive powers of young negotiators. The pigeon just wants to greedily eat the hot dog that he's found: "Oooooh! A hot dog! Yummy! Yummy! Yummy!" Then along comes the duckling, "scooty scoot scoot!" with his insistent questions about hot dogs: "What do they taste like?...Would you say that it tastes like chicken?...Hey, I'm a curious bird." At first, the pigeon entertains the duckling, "Each morsel is a joy! A celebration in a bun!", but then he soon suspects the little bird might have designs on his delicious dog. In the end, of course, the clever duckling gets his way--and half of the hot dog: "You know, you're pretty smart for a duckling." (Ages Baby to Preschool) --Paul Hughes

This book is very funny, and young kids as well as old will enjoy it very much.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Diggety Dog - your kids will love this!.......2007-08-22

Kids love finding books about familiar characters and Mo Willems has created a new one with his comical pigeon. Instead of playing along with the reader, this time he answers to a little duckling who just wants a bite of his hot dog. The duckling is pretty sneaky and asks all kinds of questions (which drives the pigeon CRAZY) until finally the pigeon gives in and shares his hot dog with him. More great facial expressions and a simple story everyone will enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the "Bus" or "Stay up Late" books.......2007-07-03

My daughter prefers this one to the others, probably because hot dogs are her favorite food. It's not interactive like the others, but it teaches sharing and has a cute, curious bird to make it fun.

It is amazing how in so few words and lines one of the most dreaded human behaviors can be exhibited as in this book: Conscience in the form of the Duckling wondering why the Pigeon doesn't do the right thing. And what a happy relief it is to do the right thing.

5 out of 5 stars Got to love the Pigeon!.......2007-07-03

Totally love this book. My son gets such a kick out of the Pigeon. Great story to share with younger children!

5 out of 5 stars My second time buying this book.......2007-06-27

My daughter and I love the pigeon book collection. This one is just as entertaining as the others, but also, for younger kids, educational on "things that go". We had owned this book, but bought it again for a friend. Gotta love that pigeon!!

4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-02-15

My son really enjoys this book. He is a bit young to "get it" but he smiles when I read it to him.

2 out of 5 stars Board books are supposed to be for babies.......2007-01-12

I am a fan of the larger Pigeon books, so I bought this one for my 18 month old who loves books. This was a disappointment as the play on words at the end makes little sense to a baby. This is a waste of money. The longer books are much more enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Great books for children of all ages and grown men who love sarcasm.......2007-01-10

My children love this book. Mo Willems is a great writer of Children's books. "What?" has become my four year olds favorite word, and my husband enjoys reading "Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late" every night at bedtime. We as a family have enjoyed all of Willems children's books based on Pigeon. My two year old loves "The Pigeon Loves Things That Go" He makes the noises while I read.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but there are better options in this genre.......2007-02-14

I devour all books in the people-befriending-animals genre, especially ones where birds are concerned. While this one satisfied me by and large, I would just like to provide a tiny bit of criticism.

I didn't care for the two episodes of the author's allowing Arnie, the wild bird she rehabilitates, to drink alcohol. Once, to the point of drunkenness. !!! This easily could have resulted in the bird's death. Obviously.

I also didn't care for the author's apparent heavy smoking in the presence of Arnie as well as her cats. The obvious second-hand smoke issues aside, she mentions numerous episodes of the bird "playing" with cigarette butts in her ashtray. I just shudder to think how much "fun" the bird would have had if it had ingested some tobacco, or worse yet, gotten burned by a butt that wasn't fully extinguished.

Nonetheless, the book was mostly enjoyable and I would ultimately recommend it. I'd say C+ or maybe B- depending on my mood.

If you enjoyed this book, or even if you didn't, I would recommend Chris Chester's "Providence of a Sparrow" -- a memoir of a bird friendship that is glorious. Also, "That Quail, Robert" far outshines "Arnie"...

5 out of 5 stars Darling!.......2004-06-06

This is based on a true story. Margarete, who considered herself a typical grandmother, ran across a downed baby bird in her flower patch. She tried to put the bird back in the nest as a helpful soul, but that didn't work. She tried several times, describing her attempts to reach the nest by roof and ladder like a gymnastics move - remember, this is a grandmother. Each time she completed the task only to find the bird back in the flower patch down below. When she decided to raise the bird herself, it was of course only going to be temporary.

This is a wonderful story of love and compassion, of companionship and triumph. Arnie the starling ended up being the thread that held many stories together in Margarete's life. A war bride from Munich, Margarete lived in Texas where she had run a pet clinic, among other things. She moved to Cape Cod with Arnie by the end of the tale, having had many adventures along the way. Margerete even shared the rejection letter from the Tonight Show. Maybe they didn't believe Arnie the starling could talk? "Good," was Arnie's reply.

Arnie never did return to the wild, preferring the company of Margarete and her other animals, human food to wild offerings, and, of course, there would be no one to talk to out there! This is a lovely story, a touching story, one for kids and adults.

It is the heartwarming story of a lady and her bird. Brings tears to the eyes! Superbly written! A great biography for any one who even remotely likes animals!
