Beats saving all the Handyman Magazines.......2007-09-30
This is an excellent "fix it yourself" book that includes many fixes you can find only in The Handyman Magazine. The magazine is a top-notch periodical, in my opinion, for guys like me - mediocre at making everyday fixes to common problems around the home. This is the latest upadate I could find, and for the price, it was an excellent deal. For all you do-it-yourselfers who have two left hands, and for indepent women who need to economize, this is an a very good book. Covers most every day maintenance and repair stuff that comes up when you least expect and need a fairl quick, but easy and inexpensive fix. I'd buy this one again.
Ecellent.......2007-09-26
My husbsnd thinks this book is fantastic,a lot of pointers for the do it yourself person. And delivery was excellent, i received it sooner than i expected.
Good Book.......2007-01-03
Pretty useful book that covers a wide variety of topics and explains things pretty well through words and pictures. The only issue is that it is sometimes missing topics that probably should be in the book, but my complaints are few and far between. I recommend this book for what is already in it.
Very good!.......2006-02-23
This do-it-yourself book is very good. It is an excellent resource for the homeowner with some to many handyman skills. My first complaint is that several projects are way beyond the capacity of the weekend home-warrior. Secondly, many of the instructions are not detailed enough. You are forced to figure out internal steps to procedures on your own. I have the original 1973 edition, and its new look and upgrade is amazing. It is a book I wouldn't do without.

As a home repair columnist and a handyman myself, this book has been in my reference library since it was first published in 1995. Clear, well-organized, well-indexed, filled with useful illustrations and diagrams, this is a great book for anyone interested in learning about how to maintain their home, keep appliances running, and fix many things they might never have imagined they could. You will recoup the cost of this book the first time you don't have to call in a pro for a simple home repair!

books.......2007-01-09
If you're AT ALL inclined to do your own work around the house, books of this type pay for themselves several times over. Just one repair you read about in this book and do yourself will pay for the entire cost of the purchase. Excellent investment, even for the novice. Instructions are clear and easy to follow.
Ten Thumbs Up!.......2001-09-06
When it comes to home repairs, I am all thumbs. I've had leaky faucets and toilets for years. Patching drywall, fixing locks, and replacing glass in windows used to require a call for professional help. Until I bought this book. It contains easy to follow, step by step directions with terrific pictures. I've saved hundreds of dollars since purchasing it. Simply terrific!
Get this book and never loan it out!.......2001-01-01
I'm on my fourth copy of this book. Mine tend to vanish like the morning dew juat as my neighbors begin their spring garage cleanup. . . My bro-in-law has one as well, but he insists that the fact that my name is written in indelible SHARPIE marker on the front is just a tribute to me and my helpful nature. . . This book has more helpful hints in introduction than most do in the first 5 chapters. And it just goes on and aon and on!
With actual real life applications for stuff you'll find lying around your garage (from old buckets to wire to old useless hose), this book is a true boon for anyone looking to clean up their act (and their garage) and make the time they have to spend on projects less of a fight to just keep the cords straight!
I highly recommend this book for anyone that knows they own at least 4 tape measures, but can't find one to save their lives!
Well worth the cost, and as well constructed as the book is, it will last a lifetime!
Readers Digest Helpful Hints.......2000-07-22
I recieved my first Readers Digest Helpful Hints five years ago.
I was so impressed, I got copies for my two sons and son-in-law.
It is something I would not want to be without.
It really does have helpful hints found nowhere else.
I thank you for Readers Digest Helpful Hints.

My husband is a construction worker, and this book is very helpful.
Worth every penny!.......2007-04-07
This book is fantasic for those of us who don't have degrees in construction or engineering. Great to have for the occasional carpenter, electrician, plumber, etc.

When they say back pocket they mean small. Packed with tons of information, but very small print. May need microscope.
Handyman for Handymen.......2006-01-19
This is a good reference guide for those that are in the carpentry and construction business or experienced handymen. The information is good, though could stand to be better organized. I was also surprised to see that it contained much of the same information as the "Pocket Ref", by the same author. I would say that for general info, the Pocket Ref was a better buy. However, this little book works pretty well for those who need specifics for carpentry.

Customer Reviews:
It alright.......2007-08-24
It was a hot story, but the lead female was disappointing. I like a story to feature a brighter/self-assured female in this day and age. I was satisfied overall, but not real excited.
We could all use a handyman with all the right tools!.......2007-01-16
Beth-Ann Harris has been dumped again because of her lack of enthusiasm in bed. Maybe if her boyfriends would give her something worth getting worked up over, she'd exhibit a little more passion. When the builder hired to fix the hole in her ceiling volunteers to tutor her in the bedroom she agrees. Beth-Ann's not going to turn down the chance to be with the one guy who'd once told her that she'd never turn him on.
Riley Osborne visits Beth-Ann's home fully expecting to simply repair a hole in her ceiling. He isn't expecting the witty bombshell who greets him at the door. Riley adores women but there's no way he's letting one slip a marriage noose over his head. No commitment is the way he likes his relationships. Until now.
Beth-Ann opened her front door and uttered the words that would have Riley's mind in overdrive for weeks on end. "Are you the man who's going to fill my hole?" Of course, she was talking about the hole in her ceiling, but no red-blooded male is going to pass up an opening like that one, and Riley is no exception. Even though it takes Beth-Ann a moment to realize the sexual connotation of the conversation she delights in the verbal sparring. She doesn't immediately recognize Riley though him calling her "ma'am" does remind her of someone. While Riley's busy working at checking on the damage to her roof, Beth-Ann receives a phone call that he can't help but overhear. Her brush-off of the jerk on the other end of the line is just too impressive not to eavesdrop. After slamming the phone down, Beth-Ann remembers that Riley is in the room and witnessed her half of the conversation. He'd paid particular attention to several of the comments and volunteers to give her lessons on fulfilling her fantasies. Beth-Ann suddenly realizes exactly who Riley is and relishes the chance to live out those fantasies with her teenage heart-throb. A no-strings attached, all out sexual relationship is exactly what they both think they want, but Riley soon wants a commitment. Can he convince Beth-Ann to make their relationship more permanent?
Alexis Fleming pens a fabulously charming tale with A HANDYMAN'S BEST TOOL. The characters are down to earth and could easily be somebody you actually know. Both Riley and Beth-Ann have issues stemming from their own parents' marriages and have learned to avoid anything resembling permanency in their relationships. Watching these two work through their issues and fall in love with each other is heart-touching but what I really love about this story is the dialogue. All the sexual innuendos and comebacks the characters use are laugh out loud funny, not to mention Beth-Ann's side of the telephone conversation. Honestly, her comments on the man's personal hygiene had me laughing until I cried. A HANDYMAN'S BEST TOOL has a wonderfully thought out storyline and is a sure-fire guarantee that you'll never look at a man in a tool belt without wondering about the tool that you can't see.

The hero of Carolyn See's The Handyman has something of the sacred and more than a little of the profane about him. Back in his native Los Angeles after an abortive stay in Paris, Bob Hampton sets himself up as a jack-of-all-trades in order to pay for his art supplies. Soon, however, he's emotionally involved with several of his employers--each of whom is "sandblasted by life" and each of whom he does his best to rescue. In fact, this unlikely savior seems to work quick wonders on these dysfunctional households. What matter if he ends up bedding a few of the females in the process? But more to the point, Bob is roused by his role:
I was beginning to get the idea that maybe you couldn't change the world but you could paint sadness over, brighten the whole thing up. And maybe the bright stuff would bleed down into the interior and start changing it.
Carolyn See's story of Bob Hampton's seminal summer of '96 would be intriguing in itself, but she gives it another dimension--and several more layers--by framing it with two grant-application letters, circa 2027. It seems that a certain young researcher wishes to explore the early oeuvre of the eminent Robert Hampton, as well as his relations with the "Testigos" or "Witnesses." These witnesses, as one reads on, are all the people he encountered, changed, and was changed by in 1996; and one of the key pleasures in The Handyman is matching up each individual against his or her sadder, younger self. Like its title character, See's novel is casually inspiring. --Winnie Wheaton
Book Description
With this brilliant novel about the surprises of destiny and the origins of fame, the critically acclaimed author of Golden Days ("Extraordinary . . . a very, very important book"-Los Angeles Times Book Review) and Making History ("Radiant . . . exciting and imaginative"-Cleveland Plain Dealer) firmly establishes her place as one of the preeminent chroniclers of our times.
The Handyman is the story of Bob Hampton, an aspiring young painter who has had to face the humbling fact that he doesn't know what to paint. And how are you supposed to be an artist in this world if you don't have a vision? Bob trades in his artist's palette for a minivan full of house paints, hammers, and nails, and sets about earning a little cash as a handyman.
Although he turns out to be very bad at fixing the things he's hired to fix, Bob demonstrates quite a knack for fixing the lives of the people around him. In the midst of his jerry-built repairs and inspired home improvements, Bob meets an extraordinary cast of characters--rendered in all their delightful eccentricity and human frailty as only Carolyn See can-each of whom shows Bob the true scope of his own remarkable talent. There's Angela Landry, a housewife with far too much time on her hands, a sexpot of a stepdaughter, and a son in need of attention; Jamie Walker, whose allergy-prone and ADD-afflicted children keep a menagerie of scaly pets that far exceed Jamie's managerial skills; Valerie LeClerc, older, sadder, and certainly wiser than Bob; and Hank and Ben, who leave a narrow-minded Midwest only to find unremitting illness and isolation in the California of their dreams.
Replete with stunning images and all of Carolyn See's trademark humor and wisdom,
The Handyman depicts the countless ways in which our lives are intertwined and the profound effects we can have on one another. It is the kind of surprising and miraculously uplifting novel we have come to expect from the woman Diane Johnson has called "one of our most important writers."
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
Wanna be an artist/seeking an authentic life? You'll like it. .......2006-02-07
I loved Carolyn See's book, Making A Literary Life, so I wanted to check out her fiction. I agree with the reviewers who said the first pages of the grant application were confusing before you know the story, perhaps they would have worked better at the end.
I almost stopped reading the book about 80 pages in, because I just found it too hard to believe that someone who advertises as a handyman gets called into all these strange situations and doesn't hesitate to help, even to the point of caring for an AIDS patient....not to mention that of course all the women, from very young to old enough to be his mother, want to jump in bed with him.
But I'm glad I stuck it through, the writing is worth it. Her descriptions of LA made me want to take a trip and see some of these neighborhoods. Most of the characters were likeable if a bit cliched. I'm definitely planning on reading some more fiction by Carolyn See.
A fascinating, entertaining novel.......2004-10-30
Anyone who knows anything about writing will certainly be able to tell that this book is well written. The characters, from major to minor, are all very well drawn. Ms. See has a terrific sense of humor which she employs to great effect as Bob Hampton, a handyman who eventually becomes an artist, touches the lives of various ordinary (and not so ordinary) folks in Los Angeles while he bumbles from one odd job to another. The research proposal at the beginning of the book is fascinating: the scholar who is interested in Hampton's art obviously has an exaggerated opinion of the handyman's humble and awkward beginnings. The proposal is full of ludicrous critical jargon, which masquerades as praise, but in effect says little about the artist himself. That's what this book is about: an unlayering of a man who comes to find inspiration through everyday, often menial, experiences, and transform them into art. A highly recommended, very enjoyable novel.
A Perfect Day At The Beach.......2004-07-17
What could be better than lounging on the beach on a hot summer day, completely absorbed in a trashy novel like The Handyman? This is the one to stuff in your beach bag. Carolyn See is the queen of the tossaway tale, light and breezy, perfect for passing the time until the sun goes down and the fun starts up. Who cares if the characters are caricatures? Or if the plot never thickens, but merely curdles? Bob Hampton, the implausible cardboard cut-out protagonist of The Handyman, would surely enjoy filling his empty hours reading this book, as any self-infatuated person would. On the whole, this is as good as any Harlequin novel, but much more erudite and artsy. (Well, Bob is an Artist-In-Training, right?) Have at it, and enjoy!
Best book I've read in a long time.......2004-01-29
and I read 4-6 books a week. Too many recently-published, well-written books have depressing plotlines that leave one feeling hopeless about humanity. This book is the opposite. The well-crafted paragraphs give interesting insights into the nature of the creative process, in the context of a compelling story that is hard to put down. And, when it was over, I felt happy and sated. As I result, I was deeply puzzled by some of the vituperative Amazon reviews, and can only conclude they were primarily written by a single person with some kind of personal grudge against the author. It is ironic that a book celebrating the power of an individual to positively effect the lives of others is the subject of such unpleasant anonymous attacks. This is a very good book, and I highly recommend it.
1 star is far too kind.......2004-01-22
Reading this, I felt my mind congealing into a turd. (No digestion necessary!) A TV dinner for the mind--"meat" of unnatural shape and texture (I guess it's meat; I mean, it kinda looks like meat), token vegetables, and laden with sodium-rich artifical flavorings.
I literally threw this manuscript across the room, effectively ending my stint as a literary scout. It is crap on so many levels--the "plot," the amatuerish and utterly trite crypto-Christo symbology. Jesus! Imagine my surprise--nay, horror--a year or so later, to see this trash win some critical acclaim. Complete madness.
Comte was onto something with his "mental hygiene" hangup. I'd have my eyes seared with hot pokers before reading something like this again.
Oh. And how wonderful to see the author on the MFA/ writing workshop circuit. Behold the future!

More a pamphlet than a book.............2007-04-07
Not bad info, just limited.... I was looking for something a little richer and specific to the Handyman business. Most the info here is available from other (better) sources that deal more generally with the field of construction contracting. Most of the book consists of generic material that could be applied to any business; anyone using cut and paste could have written this book by borrowing from available sources.
SAVE YOUR MONEY! Borrow the book from your local library, spend 15 or 20 minutes reading it then look elsewhere for substantial information...

Book Description
An accidental therapy session is the catalyst for change in Linda Nichols's winsome, witty, irresistible debut novel--a love story about two people who don't realize they're made for each other until it's almost too late.
Sweet, struggling Maggie Ivey is a twenty-six-year-old single mom trying to keep it all together, burdened by a lecherous boss, a dead-end job, and a worried mother who just wants her to move back home to Georgia. Maggie's prospects look dim, until her friend Gina signs her up for the famous Dr. Jason Golding's 21-Day Overhaul.
Maggie's first session seems to go perfectly. Dr. Golding is warm, sensitive, and a terrific listener. There's only one problem: The handsome man in Dr. Golding's chair isn't Dr. Golding. In fact, he's not even a therapist; he's Jake Cooper, a contractor hired to remodel the office. But all Maggie knows is that talking to him helps her feel better. And Jake doesn't quite know how to let Maggie in on the secret. Will he eventually confess to his ruse? Will she discover the truth on her own? And the most important question of all: Can a handyman fix a broken heart?
Set in the San Francisco Bay Area, and featuring a cast of characters impossible to resist,
Handyman is a fresh new look at the oldest story of all and just what the doctor ordered for anyone with a case of the blues.

Light-hearted romantic comedy.......2007-02-15
What a fun read! This book was so funny, and it illustrated a good point - if we were better friends to each other, fewer of us would need a therapist! The interactions between mother, son and Handyman are charming. The characters are very animated and somewhat predictable, but their interaction made for a very enjoyable few hours of reading.
One of my favorite books.......2005-11-15
I love Linda Nichols books. They give me hope for the future and I want to be a better person after I have read one of her books. I warmly recommended this book to everyone who wants to become a good feeling, when the rain is dropping outside your windows. Linda has the gift to write books that is like movies. I am longing after to se this book as a movie and I am sure it is going to be at least as god as "You've got mail" with Meg & Tom. By the way it is my favorite movie. I have read this book in Swedish and am know looking forward to read it in English.
Thank You Linda for being you!
Kind Regards
Cute story.......2005-10-11
I enjoyed this book it made me laugh in several places. It wasnt the BEST book ever read but it was worth reading for sure.
VERY light, predictable reading.......2005-10-09
I'm not a huge fan of romance, but I picked this up because I was in the mood for something really light that I could read quickly. This was it. Unfortunately, by the middle of the book I was just overwhelmed by the pure stupidity of the main female character, Maggie. Geez, talk about a complete idiot with NO spine whatsoever. It only got worse toward the end, when her gutless idiocy was the star of the show. Luckily for Maggie, she wandered accidentally back onto Jake's turf making for a happy, predictable ending.
If you enjoy novels featuring intelligent, strong female leads, this is definitely NOT for you.
When's the movie?.......2005-02-25
This book was fun! I read about one book every day, and this is the first time I wanted to write a review. I liked it because it was a fun story without a moral lesson, and also without language, sex, violence or drugs. I can picture Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks as the stars!

Providing answers to more than 1,000 frequently asked questions about home repair and improvement is no small task. Ask the Family Handyman manages to handle so many queries in its nearly 400 pages by providing fast answers that can, at times, feel a bit too brief. The novice do-it-yourselfer may find that the book merely scratches the surface of a few topics (installing a dishwasher or a built-in ironing board) and raises as many questions as it answers. To get a sense of its scope, realize that Ask the Family Handyman takes a topic, such as setting ceramic tile, and covers in a few pages what has been tackled elsewhere in entire books. Still, this book is a compilation of real questions submitted to The Family Handyman magazine and, as such, it represents a lot of real inquiries and concerns posed by real homeowners. Whether your project involves drywall, paint, plumbing, window installation, or driveway repair, this book will either answer your questions or give you a good starting point for more research. Along the way, hundreds of photos and illustrations will make things clearer. Readers will also find that the book provides sound advice. On the question of latex vs. oil paint, for example, Ask the Family Handyman offers tips similar to those spoken at most home improvement stores: that latex is the best choice in most situations because it dries faster, stays more flexible, breathes better and cleans up easier than oil-base paints. But the book then goes one step further and acknowledges what is spoken at the paint supply stores where most professional painters shop--oil-base is better for glossy, high-visibility applications such as doors and trim because it levels out better with fewer brush marks. So while Ask the Family Handyman may not be the ideal book for more complex home improvement projects, it will help you deal with those small, day-to-day projects, and give you plenty of tips and pointers along the way. --John Russell

I found this book most useful. It contained just about every subject I needed to look up.
A Great Book.......2000-04-06
I thought the book was wonderful. The highly detailed pictures and clear instructions make this book a must have in every home. The book has assisted me from fixing our leaky outdoor faucet; too remodeling our kitchen. It has info on both inside and outside projects. It makes the most complex jobs seem easy, and the book pays for itself with the money you save from not getting a repair man.
