Rostand's masterpiece-and the ultimate triumph of the great French romantic tradition-is the magnificent hero-for-all-seasons, Cyrano de Bergerac.
Customer Reviews:
A timeless classic with an important message........2007-05-23
Cyrano de Bergerac, by Edmond Rostand, is without a doubt one of the cornerstones of modern drama. Reminiscent of the renowned commedia dell'arte style, this play focuses on the woes of Cyrano de Bergerac, a perfect man in all ways but one - his unusually large proboscis.
Cyrano is one of the most relatable characters in all of literature. Over the course of the play, we discover his unrequited love for the beautiful Roxane. Roxane, however, loves Christian de Neuvillette, a handsome man who is nowhere near as intelligent or chivalrous as Cyrano. What ensues is a very complex love triangle in which Cyrano and Christian combine to form the ideal man - brains and personality from Cyrano, beauty and vanity from Christian. Cyrano writes poetry and love letters to Roxane by proxy of Christian. Thus, Roxane believes that Christian is the perfect man because he has Cyrano's eloquence as well as ravishing good looks.
Cyrano, thus heartbroken, proves himself to be extremely kind, contrary to the air of superiority he puts on when he feels threatened. He maintains the illusion that Christian is Roxane's perfect man because he loves her so much that he wants her to be happy regardless of how he feels. Even when Cyrano has the perfect opportunity to reveal the truth to Roxane, he does not want to disappoint her by telling her that it is really he who is her poet.
In a very comedic, tragic, poignant, and funny play, Edmond Rostand asks the question that is one of the universal woes of love today: looks or personality? Rostand's timeless, classic piece reaches people of all ages and provides multiple morals that have stood the test of time. As one of the most universally representative stories of true love, I recommend this for anyone who wants to answer Rostand's question or who wants to restore his or her faith in humanity.
Greatest hero of all time........2007-04-26
Presents one of the most heroic characters in fiction. The 1950 movie with José Ferrer is good too. Cyrano De Bergerac
Great Version of a Great Play.......2007-01-23
I bought this version for my daughter when she lost her own copy. She is a drama major and this is her very favorite play. She was heartbroken when she lost it because after reading many other translations she was just not happy with them. The one she had was published over twenty years ago, but I finally found the same translation (with an updated cover) at Amazon and she is happy again. I also prefer this version and it is also one of my very favorite plays. The subtlety of language, witty humor, sweeping heroic and romantic themes are unparalleled, in my opinion.
The movies are better.......2007-01-22
This is a rare example of the movie(s) being better than the book. It's a great story, but I find plays difficult to read. Its true beauty is displayed in two "five-star" films, one with José Ferrer, and the other with naturally big-nosed Depardieu.
The more you take from my heart, the more I have to give.......2006-08-24
The more you take from my heart, the more I have to give.
Have you ever met anyone in your life would could make you utter such words? Has anyone been inspired by you to be able to say them?
I really can't say just how many times I've read this play but I can say that Cyrano's ability to utter such a line is an example of what makes the play so exemplary. By following the life that eloquent man with the long nose, Rostand has given us a unique picture of the boundless possibilities of love.
That whole "Roxanne's kiss" scene in the middle of the play reads like one long Hallmark card. Actually, it's better than a Hallmark card because the words are spoken with such clarity and sincerity.
So when you think of this play, it's not so much words on paper as it is a visit to that time (hopefully you're experiencing it now) when you really feel love.

Book Description
One of the most beloved heroes of the stage, Cyrano de Bergerac is a magnificent wit who, despite his many gifts, feels that no woman can ever love him because of his enormous nose. He adores the beautiful Roxanne but, lacking courage, decides instead to help the tongue-tied but winsome Christian woo the fair lady by providing him with flowery sentiments and soulful poetry. Roxanne is smitten—but is it Christian she loves or Cyrano?
A triumph from the moment of its 1897 premiere, Cyrano de Bergerac has become one of the most frequently produced plays in the world. Its perennial popularity is a tribute to the universal appeal of its themes and characters.

The tragic love triangle of Roxane, Christian, and Cyrano.......2005-02-09
The scene that has made Edmond Rostand's verse drama in five acts, "Cyrano De Bergerac," a classic drama is the balcony scene, where Cyrano is feeding the inarticulate Christian the lines with which to woo the lovely Roxanne. Finally Cyrano pretends to be Christian and speaks to Roxanne directly, while hiding in the shadows. Cyrano loves Roxanne as well, but would never dare to speak to her in his own name, and the great irony is that he knows his words have won her heart, but for another man.
The scene resonates because the vast majority of young men have experienced the pangs of love for a woman who would not give them the time of day. The reason for such slights might not be a large nose, but as long as it is something that is beyond our control, we can feel an affinity with Cyrano. What makes his plight more tragic than our own is because he is both witty and romantic, using words like a rapier to best his enemies one moment and then uttering verbal bouquets that would surely win the heart of any maiden at whom they were directed. Still, the Fates conspire against Cyrano, for when Christian finally realizes that it is Cyrano's words that have won Roxane's heart for him and tries to make things right, the young man's death cements the parts they have chosen to play in this tragic love triangle. After the paradigmatic love triangle of Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot, that of Christian, Roxane, and Cyrano must rank second.
Yet in the end I find that the tragedy of "Cyrano de Bergerac" is not his alone, for there is a sense in which Roxanne's loss is even greater. For me, the key line in the play belongs to her, when in the final scene Cyrano is finally allowed to read the last letter that Christian wrote to his beloved, a letter written by Cyrano himself. The words are burned into his soul and it is when she realizes that it is too dark for him to read the words and he is reciting them, that the truth becomes clear to her. "I never loved but one man in my life," she laments, "and I have lost him twice." There is something to be said for a play that can be accurately reduced to a single line. Furthermore, in terms of romantic tragedy, the emotional impact of the ending is comparable to Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet," a comparison already warranted by the fact the plays have the two most famous balcony scenes in drama.
Rostand wrote "Cyrano" for the great French actor, Constant Coquelin, who specifically requested the final death scene. The play premiered on December 28, 1897, at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin, Paris. The fact "Cyrano" was effectively commissioned for a particular actor might explain why the playwright was able to take the French soldier, satirist, and dramatist, whose life had been the basis of many romantic but unsubstantiated legends into the central character of his drama. The historical Cyrano (1619-1655) is of interest for writing some of the first works of what we would consider science fiction, "Voyage dans la lune" (1657) and "L'historie des etats et empires du soleil" (1662). He was also considered a student of Pierre Gassendi, the writer of philosophical romances and a virile lover, so Rostand's characterization is rather suspect. But it is also one of the most memorable creation of 19th-century drama (along with Henrik Ibsen's Clara from "A Doll's House").
"Cyrano de Bergerac" represents one of the final examples of Romantic drama in France, but ironically the heroic comedy is the best known of all such works today. The only other one of Rostand's plays that has proven to be of interest is "L'Aiglon" ("The Eaglet"), a 1900 tragedy is six acts that tells the story of the Duke of Reichstadt, the son of Napoleon, who lived and died the virtual prisoner of Austria (Sarah Bernhardt played the title run in the first production). But clearly it is "Cyrano" that has made Rostand's name almost as memorable as that of his great dramatic creation.

Fantastic.......2007-07-21
This is a geart version of Cyrano. It features Jose Ferrer in the title role of Cyrano. Unlike some other swashbucklers Jose can really fence. The fencing scenes are fantastic and all the actors work to bring the tragic story of Cyrano to life in an amazing way. The only gripe I have is with the sound, but this is a fantastci movie.
Tale of Two Loves .......2007-05-26
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...or maybe it is in the ear of the beholder.
Jose Ferrer plays Cyrano de Bergerac, a witty, chivalrous swordsman who has a flair for quick quips and romantics. Cyrano's one insecurity is something he can do little about, his rather large nose, and this seems to make him reluctant to profess his love for a woman he desperately is in love with, Roxane. Roxane, however, has her love already set on another man (Christian) who has the looks that Cyrano has no hope of competing with.
In a classic story of lost love, and inner and outer beauty, the film Cyrano de Bergerac seems to highlight the idea that physical attraction can only go so far, and that sacrifice is a huge part of love. There is a significant point in the film when both major characters--Cyrano and Christian--have to sacrifice something. Christian's sacrifice in battle is parallel with Cyrano's sacrifice in trying to help Christian win the love of Roxane, and these sacrifices seem to underscore the various meanings of love in the film. While Roxane loves Christian for his outer handsomeness, it is the voice and words of Cyrano, unbeknownst to her, that she falls in love with. This seems to highlight the notion that physical attraction can only work so much magic before it falls flat, that there has to be something deeper.
Another interesting perspective is the two types of battles raging: both physical and emotional. The physical war that Cyrano and Christian fight in seems to coincide with the emotional battle within both of their hearts for Roxane. These seem to equate with both characters different kinds of wounds suffered: Cyrano (emotional, from the idea of not gaining Roxane's love) and Christian (physical, from being hurt in battle).
Clearly a sense of honor is there for Cyrano, and this makes the final climactic scene with Roxane perhaps the best scene in the film.
This is well-performed classic, albeit overlooked, shows that love has more than one dimension.
Great version...but a problem with audio.......2007-05-20
I love this movie. I think that Jose Ferrer is great a Cyrano. My students also liked this version and it was great for showing the consolidation of characters and plot lines. However, the audio inconsistencies tended to be a problem. My students missed lines. On the plus side, they were quiet throughout the movie.
Wonderful Wit.......2007-05-15
This version of Cyrano de Bergerac is timeless. Jose Ferrer embodies the character of Cyrano in a way that Steve Martin's "Roxanne" version of the story never did. I highly recommend this movie for entertainment, as well as, disscusion of wit and humor during the Renescience.
My own dear love I love you not............2007-04-13
Everytime I watched this movie when I was growing up on television, I would cry when he said that one line. Cyrano to me was the very picture of what this time period is like, this is the version that I love more than all others. I was in my local Half Price Books when I saw the book, I picked it up and was thumbing through it when I realized that the DVD of the Jose Ferrar version was attached all for $5.98, joy. I have seen every version of Cyrano, even the Steve Martin take on it in Roxanne. Jose's tenderness and beauty in this part is something that I must admit that I have read some of the reviews and they say that it doesn't seem realistic to them. There was a time when men actually courted women with sweet words and kindness, when being a poet was something that you were praised for. I suppose that there will be people who think that there is something fantasy like in this character but I also know that he is based on a real poet living at the time that it was written. I find that it was something that endeared the character to me. I love Cyrano, he taught me at a young age that it is important to look beyond someone's features and see who they are. I am like the young woman who offered him a feast at the beginning of the movie, my eyes would have held no mocking in them. Jose Ferrer is amazing in this part, this is the one that I looked for and when I found it that Sunday afternoon, I ran to watch it because it had been my one true search for so long. The quality of my DVD is fine, it has that haze of older film but everything can't be HD, get over it and watch the movie.

The long nose revolution.......2005-05-21
Cyrano is a really interesting book with many surprises to the reader. It's really creative and it's funny and romantic at the same time.
Cyrano is a man with a very large nose who loves Roxane, however Roxane loves Christian who she finds handsome and romantic, yet Cyrano is the one who helps Christian to seem like the very poetic and romantic man she thinks he is, because he tries to help him to win her love.
There are also fights along the book, and it's very entertaining and heroic. The story teaches to not be worried about appearance above everything and also to encourage people to try to explain the feelings they have inside.
I strongly recommended it if you want to spend a nice time reading these drama play and classic.
A Fun and Approachable Classic.......2005-01-19
My introduction to Rostand's "Cyrano de Bergerac" came, unsurprisingly, in an English class--a testament to the work's literary value, if nothing else. However, unlike many of the 'classics' that I had to slug through in such classes, I was thouroughly engaged by "Cyrano." While it is hardly one of the best known plays I've come across, it is certainly well worth the read.
It contains a lively and entertaining plot, both comical and tragic, is the story of a French nobleman, soldier, and playwrite who is secretly in love with the beautiful Roxanne, whom he fears will never return his affection because of his self-perceived uglyness. In an attempt to vicariously woo Roxanne, Cyrano helps his handsome but inarticulate rival by providing him with beautifully worded love letters. However, both Cyrano and Christain, his rival-cum-protegee, are sent to war, disrupting the romance. During the hostilities, Christian realizes that Roxanne truly loves Cyrano, and urges him to reveal the secret. However, Christian is killed before they are able to return from battle, and Cyrano, unwilling to reveal his true role in respect of his fallen friend, is forced to live as merely a friend, comforting Roxanne over the lover she believes she lost. It is only later as Cyrano himself dies that Roxanne discovers the truth, forcing her to experience the loss of the love of her life for a second time.
Rostand's characterization throughout the novel, particularly of the title character, is exqusite. Cyrano is a very complex character, fueled by intense emotion, pride, and fierce independence, and the reader is treated to a brilliant portrayal of both his virtues and the downfalls to which he is subject.
All around, "Cyrano" is a engaging story, well-told, and I highly recomend it to all audiences.
Cyranno De Bergerac Book Review.......2003-01-20
When you have to make an important decision that is between true love and a friendship, what are you to do? I'm sure that was a question that ran through Cyranno de Bergerac's mind all the time. Cyranno was a writer with beautiful words, but he also was a fighter in the battlefield. The fighter in him created honor, while his words created love, but not for himself but for his friend Christian.
This book had a huge turning point when Christian declared his love for Roxanne and asked for Cyranno's help. This caused Roxanne to fall in love with Cyranno's words but Christians face. This turning point showed the true emotion of Cyranno and how he really felt about Roxanne.
I think Edmond Rostand is a good writer because he makes you think. It is sort of like he makes the book seem like a puzzle. I also liked it because as the book went on he tried to create some comedy with it. I would recommend this book because it keeps you interested and always thinking. This book would appeal to people who are interested in romance, mixed with confusion and plays

A Classic Play With The Original Film Version. Recommended For English Classes........2006-12-26
This play by Edmund Rostand was immediately deemed a failure by the playwright before the curtain went up. But he was unprepared for the public's reaction to his latest creation. Now, the play that made Rostand an overnight sensation in France is available with the original film version starring Jose Ferrer in the title role. Several years prior, he had played Cyrano on Broadway, winning a Tony. To this day, he remains the only actor to win an Academy Award, a Golden Globe AND a Tony for the same role. I highly recommend this for English classes. The film is Not Rated.
