Book Description
America's Songs tells the "stories behind" the most beloved popular songs of the last century. We all have songs that have a special meaning in our lives; hearing them evokes a special time or place. Little wonder that these special songs have become enduring classics. Nothing brings the roarin '20s to life like "Tea for Two" or "I'm just Wild About Harry"; the Great Depression is evoked in all of its pain and misery in songs like "Brother Can You Spare a Dime?; "God Bless America" revives the powerful hope that American democracy promised to the world during the dark days of World War II; "Young at Heart" evokes the postwar optimism of the '50s. And then there are the countless songs of love, new romance, and heartbreak: "As Time Goes By," "Always," "Am I Blue"...the list is endless.
Along with telling the stories behind these songs, America's Songs suggests, simply and succinctly, what makes a song great. The book illuminates the way each great song melds words and music - sentiment and melody - into a seamless whole. America's Songs also traces the fascinating but mysterious process of collaboration, the give-and-take between two craftsmen, a composer and a lyricist, as they combined their talents to create a song.
For anyone interested in the history of the songs that America loves, America's Songs will make for fascinating reading.
Customer Reviews:
Lots of fun info but some annoying errors.......2007-01-16
There was a lot of great info in this book, especially covering songs from the first half of the 20th century. But there were also some annoying errors and omissions. Among the errors: a photo of the original star of Cabaret (Jill Haworth) is labeled as Jan Clayton (who was the original star of Carousel several decades earlier). The authors write that Comden and Green only had three standards, and yet they include four in this book (New York New York, The Party's Over, Just in Time and Make Someone Happy). There are some odd choices, such as "It's Not Where You Start" (from Seesaw) that is not remotely a standard, but they omit "If He Walked Into My Life" (from Mame) and "The Way We Were." And much as we all love the musical Chicago, I don't think it merits a page-and-a-half (I'm not even sure "All That Jazz" qualifies as a standard) but there's no coverage of "Tomorrow" (from Annie) or "What I Did For Love" (A Chorus Line). The authors probably would have been smarter to just stop coverage in the 1950s or 1960s.
Great Details!.......2006-09-29
You really can read this book cover to cover...or the information on each song's background can stand alone. If you're interested in modern musical history, you won't want to miss this.
An invaluable book for those who love the standards........2006-08-31
America's Songs is a wonderful source of fascinating information on the lyricists and composers of the great standards. Anyone who loves those songs will find this book invaluable. Writers Furia and Lasser have produced a tour de force.
America's Songs.......2006-08-01
A delightful journey in melodic nostalgia. Philip Furia and Michael Lasser use their long experience with American popular music to tell us with insight and humor how more than 600 songs dating from 1910 to 1977 came to be written, how they were received, how they touched American culture. The surprise for the reader is the discovery of how many of the songs linger in one's memory, how many of the words one can recall, how many of the tunes one can still sing. Then the message of the place of the songs in American life comes home, how much they say about the way we lived.
Not a book to be read from cover to cover but rather one to be browsed for favorite parts, one to be returned to time and again.
The inside story about many great American Songs!.......2006-06-19
This delightful and informative book caught my eye when I noticed that the much-esteemed songwriter,Ray Evans, wrote a blurb on the back. The book is arranged chronologically, and gives fascinating glimpses into what lead to the creation of many fantastic songs, and also explains what makes these great songs great. To me, the star of the book is Irving Berlin, who really had an incredible genius for songwriting. The clever crafting of Berlin's lyrics hadn't been adequately appreciated by me, until that exciting book showed me the craft and the art which Berlin applied to his songs. Not that other greats are glossed over, Furia and Lasser really give a wonderfully expansive collection of (mostly) fellas, who made American music what is was, and influenced what it is. Highly recommended for those who love, theatre and music.
Book Description
Raised in Savannah, Johnny Mercer and his elegant, evoca-tive lyrics took New York and Hollywood by storm. Part of a golden guild whose members included Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, Mercer put words to some of the most famous tunes of the time-like 'One for My Baby,' 'Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive,' and the immortal 'Skylark.' His life was contradictory-Mercer was a chivalrous and kind Southern gentleman, but also a bitterly frustrated man, depressed, aggressive, and alcoholic. His lone marriage, to a woman he bested Bing Crosby for, was long and turbulent, and led Mercer to an intense affair with Judy Garland, who was the secret love of his life and the inspiration for his greatest songs. Based on interviews with songwriters, singers, and composers who knew Mercer-as well as unpre-cedented access to Mercer's papers, letters, manuscripts, and an un-finished autobiography- Skylark is a landmark book about one of the great and dramatic characters in twentieth-century popular music.
Customer Reviews:
I took a trip on a train ..........2005-08-18
Reading this book was like taking a long train ride through Johnny Mercer's world full of love, laughter and most of all music. I've always loved old Hollywood black and white movies and most of these are filled with the songs of Johnny Mercer. Skylark: The Life and Times of Johnny Mercer was a book I read in one weekend and look forward to reading again and again. The touching love story between Johnny and Judy Garland tugs at your heart as only star crossed lovers can. The heartache, firey passion and longing that pours out of his songs tells the whole story of their ill fated love affair that didn't stop even with her death. How bitter sweet must it have been for her to sing those beautiful love songs that he wrote just for her. And how deep was the pain for him to listen to her records when he knew she could never be his. I've enjoyed his music for many years and now to know the life behind the words makes it even more meaningful. No wonder the Angels Sing!
Skylark.......2005-01-05
This book was a good read, very informative, but contains a bit too much psychoanalysis. And I found the misspelling of Al Capp's name to be quite offputting.
The Heart & Soul of Savannah.......2004-12-19
I attended Kevin Spacey's sold out concert at the new Jazz At Lincoln Square Theater here in NYC last Tuesday (Dec. 14) and listened to his incredibly beautiful voice sing not only Bobby Darin songs, but classic Johnny Mercer songs. Not everyone remembers Bobby Darin & Johnny Mercer's album from the 60s; Two Of A Kind, but I do.
Johnny Mercer's business manager, Marshall Robbins, sent me a photo taken at one of their rehearsals, which is framed on my living room wall. Uncle Johnny (he was my godfather) and Bobby Darin (and Mr. Robbins) are eating Eskimo Pies as they look over sheet music.
Johnny Mercer was not only an American original, but a good human being. Savannah continues to hold him up as 'First Son' and probably always will. This is a wonderful book that makes him human with all the happiness, sadness and life's ups and downs. As I get older (I'm in my 60's now) I find myself going back to those glorious, sunny, happy days of Savannah where I grew up, and those wonderful Mercer songs we used to sing at cookouts on Tybee Island and Wilmington Island. This book brought back the old Savannah that lives only in the hearts and memories of those who are old enough to remember.
It is incomprehensible to me that we are only five years ago from Johnny Mercer's 100th Birthday. He and my dad grew up together. This book is for music lovers and people who want to know more about America's greatest song writers. It does not disappoint.
A Skylark he was!.......2004-08-04
If you've lived a while and remember the music of the '30s through the '60s, hum a tune and the chances are it will be one of Mercer's -- either lyrics or lyrics and music. The man was a phenomenon! Furia gives an even-handed account of Mercer's life, including the good, the bad, and the ugly. When he was sober, he was a prince, a genius. When he was in his cups, he was someone else. Furia gives us Mercer's Savana upbringing as a "southern boy," and that was always part of his persona. This is a book you will want to read and to skim as an encyclopedic account of his myriad works. "Skylark" is the perfect title.
THE MAN FROM SAVANNAGH.......2004-04-02
Upon reading this biography, one is incline to think that songwriting at the time was a lonely job. Most songwriters became alcoolics. It is quite ironic to think that JUDY GARLAND and JOHNNY MERCER were so well acquinted together.I always thought that nobody sang BLUES IN THE NIGHT and THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC the way JUDY used to sing them in the forties. Now i know that she was the inspiration for these songs. The book does well in trying to presents MERCER's life in good perspective but of course,it is not perfect. It is for instance hard to deal with the reasons why his wife GINGER could stayed with him such a long time. After all,he was rather nasty with her.Security was probably the key word in keeping the marriage alive.Like the author,i also think that JOHNNY's child years really played an important part in his songs. As he became older,JOHNNY becomes almost obsessed in recreating the imagery of his youth. This is almost like MARCEL PROUST and his famous A LA RECHERCHE DU TEMPS PERDU.I enjoyed the book because i learned things about him that i didn't know. The story of JOHNNY paying his father's bankruptcy with his share of CAPITOL ,and then forgetting to sign the big check is really something. His BROADWAY failures are sad but are unfortunately true.Still,JOHNNY MERCER remains the greatest lyric writer of his generation. No one will never argue over this.Between 50 and 75 of his songs are classics of the repertoire. What a feat! Thanks JOHNNY for the pleasure you provided for us music lovers.
Book Description
From the turn of the century to the 1960s, the songwriters of Tin Pan Alley dominated American music. Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart--even today these giants remain household names, their musicals regularly revived, their methods and styles analyzed and imitated, and their songs the bedrock of jazz and cabaret. In The Poets of Tin Pan Alley Philip Furia offers a unique new perspective on these great songwriters, showing how their poetic lyrics were as important as their brilliant music in shaping a golden age of American popular song. Furia writes with great perception and understanding as he explores the deft rhymes, inventive imagery, and witty solutions these songwriters used to breathe new life into rigidly established genres. He devotes full chapters to all the greats, including Irving Berlin, Lorenz Hart, Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Oscar Hammerstain II, Howard Dietz, E.Y. Harburg, Dorothy Fields, Leo Robin, and Johnny Mercer. Furia also offers a comprehensive survey of other lyricists who wrote for the sheet-music industry, Broadway, Hollywood, and Harlem nightclub revues. This was the era that produced The New Yorker, Don Marquis, Dorothy Parker, and E.B. White--and Furia places the lyrics firmly in this fascinating historical context. In these pages, the lyrics emerge as an important element of American modernism, as the lyricists, like the great modernist poets, took the American vernacular and made it sing.
Customer Reviews:
SING ALONG WITH THIS ONE, FOR SURE!!.......2007-09-23
I loved this book!! I picked it up somewhere, and sang inside my head on almost every single page! It is a terrific overview of the Tin Pan Alley days of GREAT music, and in this book Philip Furia has provided enough lyrics to remind us of all the songs, and it is great fun to read. I marked up my copy, and then had to buy another, clean copy to re-read. I have also bought a couple more copies of the book for friends who also love the old music.
Philip Furia is a lover of this great music, and his bio of Johnny Mercer is very well written and, again, lots of fun to read. Oh for the good ole music of yesterday! I do miss it. But because of these books -- and others like them -- it is not gone forever. Thank you to Philip Furia for sharing your love of this music with all of us! The men and women who wrote this popular music were poets indeed, and one can tell they had a lot of fun while writing the songs.
Excellent overview.......2004-01-02
This is an excellent book. Furia provides a fine overview with lyric analyses of all the major lyricists of the first half of the 20th Century. He also touches upon the history of Tin Pan Alley itself and other developments that were happening at the same time in music, like the rise of the film studios, the creation of ASCAP and BMI, and the "race" and "hillbilly" recordings which helped bring about the end of Tin Pan Alley dominance. Furia later wrote full biographies of Ira Gershwin and Johnny Mercer that are more complete. (He would do the world a great service if he would write a decent book on Dorothy Fields.) THE POETS OF TIN PAN ALLEY is highly recommended for all lyricists and anyone who has in interest in American popular song.
O.K. for dipping........2002-06-05
I have to wonder if the impressive endorsements on the back cover (by Sammy Cahn, Steve Allen, Michael Feinstein) are from musical celebrities who actually read the book. The author deserves praise for bringing concentrated focus to and careful analysis of the lyrics of America's best wordsmiths, but this is not a book that seduces the reader into staying with it for extended stretches. There's historical context, learned analysis of prosody with lots of concise examples, and pithy scholarly prose. But when all is said and done, the chapters devoted to individual lyricists, as well as the book as a whole, are quite bloodless. I don't sense any clear thesis, any driving passion, even any strong personal preferences from the author.
The author's justification for such a book--that composers of melody are given credit at the expense of the lyricist--strikes me as a bit of a straw man. How many listeners can immediately associate a familiar popular standard with either its composer or lyricist? Also, the analysis of prosody and technique often overshadows consideration of the thematic integrity, or meaning, of a song. Moreover, the analyses pay too little heed to melody and harmony to make a persuasive case for the poetic power of the lyrics themselves. Finally, with song lyrics how can you separate the dancer from the dance? Were it not for Billie Holiday, Mabel Mercer and, above all, Frank Sinatra, most of these songs would be long forgotten. Certainly some consideration of the actual performance of the lyrics would seem requisite to any demonstration of their continuing vitality and importance.
Most of the above challenges are met by a book to which the author frequently alludes--Gerald Mast's "Can't Help Singin'." Any reader interested in the art and lives of the composers and the songs, not to mention the lyricists and lyrics, cannot afford to pass by Mast's singular achievement. In the neglected, taken-for-granted field of the American popular song, it remains the one "must read."
Issue a new printing.......1999-07-01
I erroneously entered this as an author's review. I thought I was communicating with the author. Please delete what I erroneously submitted, and accept it as a customer's review.
I would like to have several compies of this book available. I am thinking of putting on an adult education course with this book as the principal text.
Peak pleasure for this reader........1999-03-27
Delightful detailed insight into the creativity of the lyric writers of the 20th century [prior to 1960]. Furia's writing style is a pleasure to read, wonderfully free of cliches. If you appreciate genius {I do, but I'm not one} and you have a rudimentary knowledge of music [I do}, you'll love this book.

Book Description
This book starts out with a brief explanation of why and how MIDI works. It includes information on how to link keyboards, sequencers, drum machines and computers into powerful MIDI systems. Discusses every message in the MIDI language in a musical as well as technical point of view. Includes more than 100 detailed illustrations and diagrams showing the finer points of how to use MIDI equipment to its fullest.
Customer Reviews:
Nice introduction.......2000-06-15
If you really want to learn MIDI, as with a lot of communications standards, the only way in which you can be *absolutely* sure you take everything under your belt is to read the original standard - but books like this are far more digestible and this one particularly is not bad. The approach taken here is the big floppy book sort of thing, with a lot of diagrams, all simple and intuitive, and usually presented accurately.
The book is not too heavy on the electronic side, but does go into some detail on issues such as sample downloading and SMPTE codes, which would not be essential for a lot of people, but you can bet you will eventually need to cover this stuff if you get serious.
Nowadays, this book is likely to be a very little bit out of date, but it is a good addition to your collection if you like things explained really well - and the overlap between this and other somewhat less accessible books would be likely to help a good deal to clarify matters.

Customer Reviews:
Good but not completely accurate.......2007-07-09
I am a non-denominational protestant exploring the Catholic faith and will more than likely become a Catholic. I pick up this book with several others on the Catholic faith.
I like the style of the book and it is very easy to read. What is troubling it that it is not completely accurate. The author uses scripture passages to suppport her discussion around different teachings of the Catholic church. At different points, she makes a statement and then gives a scripture reference in parenthesis. Some of her statements suprised me since I have already studied many books on the Catholic faith and some of her conclusions were new to me; I was also very happye to see the scripture references. The problem is that when I went to the Bible to read the supporting reference, in more than one case they did not support the statement that she was making!! This was really problematic for me since I am wanting as accurate an understanding of the Catholic faith as possible. Since I am using a lot of what I read as an apologetic to my husband, it is very important that it is very accurate (he has found statements in other books that are not supportable and is now very suspicious).
For Catholics and non-Catholics I would suggest "Catholicism for Dummies" as very readalbe and accurate. For Catholics or those that already have a pretty good grasp of the Catholic faith I would suggest the "United States Catholic Catechism for Adults". This book is much easier to read than the Catechism itself and have a very nice format for each section. The biggest advantage, however, is that you know it is 100% accurate.
Claire Gets It, Now You Can Too!.......2006-10-25
I love Claire's story because it mirrors not only my own, but just about every cradle Catholic I've ever known. We learn the faith as children but really don't "get it" until the it gets challenged--then we either get it or bale. Sadly many bale, without unpacking what we learned and putting it into practice. Thankfully Claire does the work for us.
The Ivy League grad gives a great overview of the basics of the Faith in a manner that makes this not only enjoyable to read but lifechanging.
A Big Thumb's Up!.......2006-10-08
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is affordable (retailing for $12.95) and relatively brief (252 pages). The author gets right to the meat of her subject, which is a hardy defense of the Catholic Church, her teachings and dogmas, without apologies while laying down her apologetic approach.
Ms. Smith stumbles a bit out of the gate, before hitting her stride, about 1/3 of the way into the book. I found three glaring errors early on in this book.
On pages 41-42, she writes, "After the Resurrection, Paul (whose name was Saul before he was renamed by Jesus)..." To be more precise, St. Paul was born a Roman citizen, and therefore Paul (Paulus) was already his name at birth. It was his Roman name. Saul was his Jewish name. Jesus didn't have to rename Saul to Paul, since he already was known by both names. St. Paul, as apostle to the Gentiles, found it more fitting that he would go by his Roman name in his ministry.
On page 44 the author writes, "The Roman authorities later paid the guards to say the body (of Christ) was stolen." This is a glaring error. The Gospel of Matthew, chapter 28, verses 12-16, makes it clear that the Chief Priests in Jerusalem bribed the guards of Jesus' tomb, not the Roman authorities.
Page 46 has this error, "Over at Lourdes, France---where Mary had appeared to St. Bernadette in 1958..." The author surely meant 1858, a century earlier.
Other than the 3 above mentioned mistakes, the rest of the book is quite sound, and I would recommend it highly for those that are looking for a nonscholarly & brief introduction to basic Catholicism.
John Paul
Now I really do get it!.......2006-09-26
I was born and raised Catholic, but received the typical post-VII Catholic education. As an adult, I found myself with virtually no knowledge of just what it meant to be a Catholic. This book caught my eye while I was perusing the shelves at a Catholic bookstore, and I decided to give it a try.
I found it to be an excellent summary and defense of the basic tenets of Catholic teaching. It gave me many "A-HA!" moments in which some action, prayer, or tradition I'd always practiced without knowing why, suddenly made sense. Most importantly, I came to understand precisely why the Catholic church is the true church founded by Christ, which instilled in me a desire both to study the faith more in depth, and to spread the good news to all the world. This book marked the beginning of a period of intense spiritual growth for me, and now I encourage all my fellow post-VII "fuzzy Catholics" to give it a try.
An Impressive Defense of the Faith.......2006-04-27
Claire Furia Smith is a cradle Catholic who grew up going to Mass and Catholic schools. It would therefore appear that she was as well educated in the Faith as any lay Catholic could be. As an adult however she realized that she was seriously lacking in knowledge concerning some of the Church's primary teachings and she took commendable action to correct this problem. Realizing that there were probably many others like herself Mrs. Smith has written a book just for the long time Catholic that may need to bone up on the teachings of Mother Church and she has done so in a clear and easy to understand manner.
This book deals with several major positions taken by the Church including Infallibility, Confession, Purgatory, the Saints and the Virgin Mary. In each chapter the author clearly explains the Biblical and historical basis for Church teachings and tells of her own experiences concerning each subject. Included in the chapter about Confession is the heartwarming and funny story of her own first Confession. It seems that she decided to make a list of her sins to take along with her so that she wouldn't forget anything but then someone suggested that it might be dark in the Confessional. To solve that problem she took along a flashlight that she kept hidden inside the pockets of the baggy outfit that she chose to wear that day. She thought that all was well until a year later when a Nun told the newest group of first timers not to bring a flashlight. Each chapter is presented in a like manner, which makes for a highly interesting and enjoyable read.
Unfortunately the author is a little strident at times, which might turn off those thinking of conversion and looking for answers. Mrs. Smith is a proud Catholic after all and she makes no excuses or apologies for her opinions. For long time Catholics however this book will prove to be a very useful resource, explaining things that we might not quite understand and also providing answers to the questions we are most often hit with by those hostile to Catholicism. A friend of mine at Church recently told me about a conversation she had been involved in which forced her to think back to her Catholic education to try and answer some tough questions. This book would be perfect for this friend and I think that I may well buy her a copy. I could give her mine but I intend to keep this precious little book in my own library so that I can consult it with regularity.
