Book Description

After a fight with her boyfriend, a business trip to Scotland is the perfect diversion for Jenny Porter, who works as a virtual assistant for a financial executive. Dispatched to assess a failing textile mill, Jenny instead finds herself determined to save it at any cost after befriending its charming employees. That cost might just be her sanity as she stretches her resources, patience, and compassion to the outer limits.

As she gets to know the colorful Dalmain clan, Jenny just can't say no when asked to help run a mobile food stand, save the family business, put an overbearing matriarch in her place, rekindle an old romance, or throw a dinner party for sixteen on short notice. Then there's the problem of being attracted to the dashing yet abrasive Ross Grant, who has a way of showing up just when things seem almost sane and manageable..

The majestic Scottish highlands, covered in purple heather and dotted with sheep and llamas, provide a dramatic backdrop while Jenny tries to pull everything together in time to save the mill and figure out her increasingly complicated personal life, in this delightful, romantic romp.

4 out of 5 stars Another terifically determined Fforde heroine!.......2005-10-06

I really enjoy Fforde's books, primarily because her heroines are strong, determined, and a little cranky sometimes. Even though Fforde's novels are light and fluffy for the most part, you can always count on Fforde to present a great protagonist.

Katie Fforde is a great author to read when you don't want depressing, when you don't want to think too hard, when you need a smile.

The only thing I didn't care for about Highland Fling was the sometimes in-depth information into the textile aspect of it; however, I understand there was a place for it and that those details were appropriate; they just bored me a little.

I will continue to read Fforde's offerings with pleasure.

4 out of 5 stars Light & Warming Fun!.......2005-08-16

Genevieve ("Jenny for short") is a virtual assistant sent to the highlands to inspect the books and profits of a failing sweater company. She stays at Dalmain House where she gets to know its inhabitants a little more than she would have preferred. Lady Dalmain is an old shrew that treats her only daughter like a servant. Philip is the sweet, doting eldest son who does no wrong. Felicity is the agoraphobic who seethingly does everything her mother tells her and never stands up to herself. Iain is the rebel son who married under class and lives a "cottage love" life. Upon Jenny's arrival, things start to change for the better for everyone.

I loved Jenny - she was so caring, sweet and self-sacrificing for people who were basically strangers. Ross Grant was a treat and I loved how Jenny was so rude to him, totally out of character for her.

The book was very predictable, but oftentimes these light romance novels are. Other than that, I have no complaints! Highland Fling is funny, sweet, breezy, touching, at times very hot, and ultimately satisfying. What more do you want in a romance?

This was my first Katie Fforde novel, and based on it I will definitely read more from her.

3 out of 5 stars Fun even if it doesn't make much sense.......2004-09-03

I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to trying some of Fforde's others.

This is basically a very light-hearted romance, with plenty of eccentric characters who become somewhat endearing once one knows them. The best part of the book is really the plot about trying to save a mill that has been mismanaged. The weakness is that the development of the romantic suspense does not fit in with what we know of the characters involved. We are told about their childhoods, etc. but there is no real effort to tie those factors into the story. Then one wonders why they are put in there. The heroine resists the pull of our romantic lead for reasons which make little sense overall.

Fortunately the tone of the book is so light and frothy that the illogical bits almost seem irrelevant

1 out of 5 stars She's done so much better.......2004-07-19

Katie Fforde's work is generally so much better than this annoying effort. The heroine's choices make NO sense, her motivations are childish in the extreme, and the whole book seems sloppy. Fforde's editor needs to work a little harder.

4 out of 5 stars Does just what it says on the label ............2004-06-15

If you like easy to read, but skilfully written holiday novels, then this is for you! It does just what it says on the label - entertains and amuses and is perfect for the beach or a plane journey.

It's the story of a "virtual assistant" (e.g. on-line secretary) who is sent to the far north of the Scottish Highlands in the cold and snow of the early winter to sort out a failing woollen mill. Our heroine encounters a cast of characters who range from the sensible to the sublimely impossible and, of course, she has a silly boyfriend whom she eventually dumps for a rich, sexy, gorgeous businessman.

Fforde's stories are always a pleasure: not great literature but very satisfying escapist reads. This is another one to enjoy whilst downing a pina colada on the beach!

5 out of 5 stars Cute Time-Travel Book.......2007-08-15

I enjoy a good time-travel book.

This was cute! The characters, Chelsea (present) meets Griffin (from the past)

When you read this book, think "funny" because it was written so cute! I laughed and laughed. Well written and nicely edited.

4 out of 5 stars Highland Fling: Ladybug's Thoughts.......2006-03-27

I really liked the way Tess let us travel from the USA to Scotland and used various years/centuries in the travel.
The reason I gave a 4 is because I just sorta like the thrill of the way a person acts in a different era instead of the interaction that she had with the four American's with Griffin after he came to the US. That made me lose interest. However, when the action went back to Scotland, was it ever worth the wait! I am anxious to read more of Tess Mallory's writings and deeply appreciate the lack of vulgar language in her books.
Thanks, Tess!

4 out of 5 stars Highland Fling time travel twist.......2006-02-05

Although I had a little trouble identifying with a hero who threw up whenever faced with the prospect of a woman he might care for, the plot twists and other characters made up for this. The book was a pleasing time travel with interesting characters. I don't want to give away some of the time travel twists, but I do want to read the other books about these characters. Mallory has a neat little time travel mini-series. If you enjoy historical time travels, you'll enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful love story.......2005-08-16

This is the second in Tess Mallory's Highlander time-travel trilogy. This story rates right up there with the best of the best.A shy, modern-day woman, Cheslsea Brown, is thrown into the 1800 wild West with Scottish clan leader, Griffin Campbell,to save Griffin's cousin from being hung for murder. Chelsea has to figure out a way to rescue all three of them and return them to present times.

4 out of 5 stars Very Humorous Adventures in Time.......2005-07-15

Scotland - 1603 -- Poor Griffin Campbell, heir to clan Campbell, handsome, strong, honorable, and intelligent. Everything a future laird should be, other than the fact that try as he might, he just can't seem to do the deed with a lass! It's not necessarily that he doesn't have the urge, it's just that the minute he gets close or kisses them his stomach rolls and he has to vomit. So far, he's hidden this particular quirk from everyone but now finds himself betrothed to a woman he doesn't even feel the urge to kiss, let alone do the deed. Taking himself off to gather his thoughts, he happens upon a cave that had a pool and green crystals. Stones that looked just like the crystal that his friends Jix and Jamie MacGregor used that enabled them to travel back and forth in time. As he touched the stones, hed wake was staring at Chelsea, a comely lass in a very short dress - and, more importantly, it was the year 2003.

Chelsea was following in her scientific parents shoes - both of whom were brilliant scientist's. Chelsea was just about finishing up a doctorate degree back in Texas, yet she never felt she could measure up next to her two best friends - the vivacious lovely Jix MacGregor and, gorgeous and accomplished Samantha. They had been friends forever and when invited to come and celebrate Jix and Jamie's anniversary, Chelsea couldn't refuse.

Chelsea had never before felt any kind of attraction for a man; that is until she got a good look at Griffin Campbell, a blond Adonis if ever she saw one. He seemed to like her too, at least he sure kissed like he did, but then he would turn around and `hurl' immediately after. Now for someone whose self-esteem was low to begin with Chelsea didn't think the future looked too bright. When they all ended up flying to Texas in search of specialist for Jix. Griffin discovered a long lost cousin had somehow time-traveled back to 1882 Texas and he was determined to find a way to save him never expecting that Chelse would be coming along on the adventure.

*** In the second installment to Mallory's time travel series, she brings Griffin Campbell back from Scotland 1603 to Scotland 2003, and then to Texas 1882. Poor Griffin as if the adjustment to 2003 wasn't enough of a culture shock, he'd been put into the belly of a giant metal bird - an aero-plane - and flown to modern day Texas, with more adventures thrown in! One can positively say that you won't get bored with this rollicking adventure of a time travel story especially as Griffin finds the woman he'd truly like to settle down with - except for that one little problem. Filled with more than enough secondary characters, and a plethora of amusing situations this writer puts the lead duo through, the reader is sure to find this an enormously entertaining read. -- Marilyn for, [...]---

5 out of 5 stars The second best i have read !!.......2003-11-15

When Jessica is asked by her love interest, George Sutherland, to come to his family castle in Wick, Scotland, Jess is thrilled. She invites some of her friends from Cabot Cove along too.
When Jessica arrives, she is greeted by a ghost. When an eccentric movie director wants to shoot there because of the ghost, it is all Jess can do to keep him off her back. But when a young girl is found slaughtered the same gruesome way the "ghost" was, the vacation is ruined.
Since Jessica is always investigating the murder, she has no time to spare with Sutherland. The reasons that I like this book are because you get your favorite Cabot Cove chararecters in an exotic setting. Second, the characters are all two dimevsional. A great read!

2 out of 5 stars That's NOT Jessica Fletcher I like.......2003-06-15

Jessica Fletcher is invited by her friend, George Sutherland, to visit his castle in Scotland. But the castle is rumored to be cursed by the witch executed centuries ago. Bizarre incidents happen one after another, and superstitious people blame George and his castle.

I like "Murder, She Wrote" TV series and I expected this novelization was also nice. But I am disappointed. This book's Jessica lacks the most important quality that makes her successful as a mystery writer and a sleuth; namely curiosity. Every time an incident happens, she dismisses it to enjoy her vacation. That's not an attitude of a sleuth. That's NOT Jessica Fletcher I like. Just an ordinary amiable lady.

And the truth is extremely easy to guess. I feel that the author deliberately keeps Jessica inactive to lengthen the story. Indeed, in the last 50 pages, Jessica gets suddenly active and easily solves the mystery. Disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Highland Fling Murders : A Murder, She Wrote Mystery.......2000-06-06

Excellent! I was a little skeptical at first, but was wonderfully delighted. For those who loved the series, this is a great book!

5 out of 5 stars A Slaying In Scotland.......2000-05-01

Jessica Fletcher anda group of her friends from Cabot Cove, Maine, take off for teh British Isles and end up at a castle in Scotland. It would be a great vacation -- except for the ghost. And the murders.

Scotland's most celebrated witch, executed long ago with a pitchfork through her heat, is said to haunt Inspector George Sutherland's family castle in the village of Wick. It's an intriguing tale and after a British book tour, Jessica accepts Sutherland's invitation to bring her Cabot Cove friends to the heather-covered Highlands. Indeed, after "roamin' in the gloamin'" with the handsome inspector, she spots a spectral woman in white in the gloomy castle. But Jessica's blood runs cold when she later finds a local lass executed in the same way as the legendary witch. Something is very vile in Wick. It's a case of evil, greed, and murder that pits Jessica Fletcher against a killer from this world--or maybe the next.

Product Description

This comprehensive book is a facsimile edition of the original collection published in 1883. It has survived over the years because it is one of the richest and most interesting of the 19th century instrumental collections as well as a resource for students of American vernacular music. Examining the cultural exchange between minstrel show, ethnic music and even classical music influenced some of the genres of what we now call American music. "Ryan's Mammoth Collection" contains a significant number of reels, jigs, hornpipes, clogs, walk-arounds, essences, strathspeys, highland flings, and contradances that are still played by both traditional and professional fiddlers. A special section containing historical notes and comments is included.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Magic, 10 Stars If I Could.......2004-01-20

I don't even know where to begin other than to say do not pass this magic by. This one will stir your soul.

This breath-taking story has everything we want from a romance and more. The drama and conflict are heart-wrenching and yet never created by the overdone bitterness & cruelty we often see between our H\H...and when the conflict IS between them it is utterly believable & understandable (as is the love), not some overexaggerated miscommunication. Even the ending has just the right kiss of realism to make us scream for more, and the secondary characters in this story are distinct and 'real', not just room decoration. The touch of the 'otherworld', in my opinion, just puts Ms. English at the head of the class for this effort.

Ahhh, please bring us Malcolm's story and a chance to revisit Jemmy and alyson. This story is not finished yet...

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!!.......2002-12-29

I just bought this book this afternoon and it was so good I couldn't put it down until I finished it!! It keeps you on your toes the whole way through. I found myself talking out loud wanting Alyson to reveal what she knew she must to her love Jemmy. It has been a very long time that I have been so engrossed with what I was reading. Truly Amazing!! My hats off to Elizabeth English for taking me on such a splendid adventure! I can't wait to read more books from her.

Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and Kritiques

The Darnleys and Kirallens have been feuding for generations, though no one really remembers what started it all. The members of each clan have been taught their entire lives to hate and destroy the other. Finally Laird Kirallen grows weary of the war and decides it is time for peace. He proposes the marriage of his only remaining son to Darnley's beloved daughter. Darnley grudgingly agrees, but not for the same reasons as Kirallen.

Jemmy Kirallen left home over twelve years ago to go to sea and never expected to return home. Upon receiving word his brother Ian was killed because of the feud, he hastens home to assist his elderly father in ruling the clan. He never expected to be returning to a wedding, especially his own. Jemmy too, is tired of the feud, having left all those years ago to escape it once and for all. He reluctantly goes along with his father's plan, all in the name of peace.

Darnley agreed to the marriage under duress, planning to use it to destroy the Kirallens once and for all. He refuses to marry his darling Maude to the heathen, so he blackmails his illegitimate daughter, Alyson, into posing as Maude and marrying Jemmy. Alyson agrees to it only to save her little brother's life, never expecting to be there for very long... and certainly never anticipating she would fall in love with her husband!

His beautiful new bride intrigues Jemmy, and that reinforces his desire for peace. What he can't understand is her seemingly abrupt personality changes, from ice queen to a woman of fire and passion. Alyson was pleasantly surprised upon meeting her husband and finds herself drawn to him in ways she cannot begin to comprehend. But he can never be hers, for she must continue her charade of pretending to be Maude, even though she grows tired of living a lie. The more she gets to know Jemmy, the more her acting slips and her own personality sneaks out...and the more she longs to tell the truth.

This was an impressive debut effort by Ms. English. Her talent is evident in her ability to weave a remarkable story. Scotland is beautifully rendered with vivid imagery. The web of deceit strung between the characters adds to the tale, as they try to resolve differences and get on with their lives. Jemmy and Alyson's relationship moves along well through the story. Ms. English captures the very spirit of the Scottish people, depicting them very true to the time.

There were a few problems with the book, this first being some very poor editing, which is not the fault of the author. However, it has a tendency to detract from the story in parts. Also, Maude starts to be redeemed a little suddenly in the end and it does not quite seem true to her character. Alistair, Jemmy's foster brother, is far too bitter, and a bit too power hungry. This reviewer is very curious to see how Ms. English will redeem him enough to be a credible hero in her next book, Laird of the Mist, released in January 2002.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story & Plot.......2002-10-01

They had been feuding for years - the Darnley's and the Kirallens. So, when the Kirallen clan captured the heir of the Darnley family the ransom terms would be steep - especially since it was Lord Darnley who had murdered the Kirallen heir, Ian some months back.

Hoping to end the feud, heartsick over the loss of all the innocent lives, the laird of the Kirallen clan negotiated sheep, money, and the hand of Lord Darnley's daughter in marriage to the second Kirallen son, Jemmy.

Lord Darnley agreed to this but deviously would substitute a [different] 'daughter' rather than his beloved daughter Lady Maude. Holding hostage the 8 year old brother of Alyson McClarn, Lord Darnley forced Alyson to pose as Lady Maude for the wedding ceremony, spy on the clan Kirallen until he could effect a massive strike against the Kirallen's.

This was an outstanding story with great writing by this new author. I was so impressed I have ordered the sequel 'Laird of the Mist'. She has fleshed out the characters so very well you really feel kinship with them. I loved the addition of a little paranormal ghost as well. This is a SOLID five star read! This will go on my keeper shelf.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful Medieval romance set in Scotland........2002-05-26

For generations along the border of England and Scotland, the Darnleys and the Kirallens have fought a bloody feud that has brought nothing but death and destruction to both families. But finally, there is hope for peace. Laird Kirallen has proposed that his only surviving son, Jemmy, marry Darnley's daughter, Maude. Darnley has no choice but to accept, or watch his own son die. But he won't send his beloved Maude to live with the savage, bloodthirsty Kirallens. Instead, he blackmails Alyson, his illegitimate daughter, into taking Maude's place, by holding Alyson's little brother hostage. Neither Jemmy nor Alyson enters into this marriage willingly. Jemmy wishes to return to the sea he loves. Alyson is forced to betray her values and live a lie to save her brother. Against her better judgment, Alyson falls in love with Jemmy, but must hide her feelings to keep up the pretense of being spoiled, haughty Maude. I highly recommend this wonderful Medieval Scottish romance, set in 1375. I can't wait to read the author's other book, which is a sequel to this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great story, really likable hero and heroine you can respect.......2003-03-04

Ana Seymour has left behind Elizabethan Ireland and the Riordan clan of her last four books and moved to 1885 Scotland. Fiona MacLennan, widowed four months, is dreading the arrival of the new laird of Castle Glen. The new laird should be her stepson, 14 year old Robby, but a 150 year old will has stipulated that after 5 generations the title will go to the next direct heir of Fergus Campbell. Duncan Campbell has never set foot in Scotland. He's a wealthy and successful New York businessman whose estranged, now dead father never got the auld sod out of his blood. He's not sure what to expect or even why he's come but he suspects it has something to do with the fact that nothing Duncan achieved was ever good enough in his father's eyes. Now the son is making the triumphant return the father never did.

Fiona expects a loud, obnoxious, poorly dressed and ill-mannered clod to step off the train but to her surprise, he's tall, dark and handsome, well dressed and polite. Robby takes an instant liking to the observant, confident newcomer, but Fiona is determined to dislike him. She's found what she thinks is a way to overturn the courts' decision and return Castle Glen to it's rightful heir, Robby, but until she hears from the lawyers she just has to make the best of things.

As the two take each other's measure, each begins to grudgingly like the other. Duncan is impressed with Fiona's loyalty to Robby and her handling of the estate in Alasdair's declining year. Fiona sees immediately that this man is very, very smart, enjoys a challenge and makes every effort to fit into this new world so different from the drawing rooms of New York Society (his determination to learn to ride a horse is adorable and funny). Eventually, he wins over Robby, the household staff and even the reluctant Fiona. But when he starts to modernize and look for ways to make the estate profitable again, he runs afoul of many in Glencolly, not least Fiona. Can he make them see that the only way to save Castle Glen is to bring it (albeit slowly) into the Industrial Age? And what if the courts determine that Robby is, in fact the rightful laird, can Duncan just walk away - and does Fiona really want him to?

I loved this story. The romance between Duncan and Fiona was sweet and believable. The relationship between Duncan and Robby was everything Duncan had wished he'd had with his own father. And Fiona's realization that her beloved late husband was really more father figure and a bit of a coward when it came to facing unpleasant problems (the opposite of the bold, take-charge Duncan) was bittersweet. Then there's the ghost of Jaime MacLennan lurking about causing mischief - or is he making things right? And is he real or some Highland madness?

A highly recommended read!

4 out of 5 stars enjoyable late Victorian ýHighland Flingý romance.......2003-03-01

In 1885, New York based businessman Duncan Campbell travels to remote Glencoly in the Scottish Highlands to evaluate his inheritance of Castle Glen and its estate as the new Laird. Duncan does not need or desire this property except to gloat in front of his deceased father, who thought he was a worthless American. When he meets the young widow of the nearly septuagenarian previous Laird, Fiona "Fee" MacLennan, he is shocked by her youth and beauty. He also likes her stepson Robby, who should have inherited the estate.

Duncan finds he enjoys his stay and obsesses over turning around the near bankrupt properties almost as much as he wants Fee. As the two fall in love, they must learn to trust one another even while she makes a legal attempt to prove Robby is the rightful Laird and he brings in modern business techniques that shake up the complacency of everyone. The duo must also contend with a neighbor who has bought up all the IOUs of the previous owner and plans to marry Fee in Castle Glen.

This late Victorian "Highland Fling" romance provides a fresh gender bending twist to the recent flood of wealthy nineteenth century Americans finding love in the British Isles. The exciting story line picturesquely yet briskly moves forward as Duncan tries to Americanize the estates while his tenants, employees, and his beloved Fee and Robby try to assimilate him into Scottish customs. The hostile takeover by the neighbors adds tension but also takes away from the wonderful basic theme of technology warring with tradition wrapped inside a captivating romance.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful Fling.......2006-07-23

Highland Fling by Jennifer LaBrecque is a wickedly delightful tale of a love thru time.

Dr. Kate Wexford though she loves her job as an ER physician something is missing. She finds herself drawn to a painting in the local museum of a man that is well over 250 years old. One night Kate is pushed into the painting, next thing she knows she is naked in a bed and its 1744.

Darach MacTavish, Laird of Glenagan cannot believe the bonny lass naked in his bed. He finds her tales of the future a bit much to take. But the attraction between them is undeniable. When nothing they try sends Kate back to present day, something has to be done for Darach is in grave danger. They both go back to future to find out what they can to help Darach and his clan survive.

Highland Fling is a treat. The hero and heroine are feisty and tantalizing. Their connection transcends time. The time travel was fascinating and really worked well within the story. This was my first book by this author. Will be looking for more.

5 out of 5 stars Another funny, emotional read from Jennifer LaBrecque!.......2006-07-22

I always count on laughing and crying when I read Ms. LaBrecque's books. As usual, she handled humor with a deft touch, and made me root for Darach and Kate, because no matter how much I laugh, I care deeply for them. I love the premise of falling through time and a painting for the love of a lifetime!

5 out of 5 stars One of the Funniest Books I've Ever Read!!!.......2006-07-14

Wow, was this a great book!!! I don't read that much category romance but Jennifer LaBrecque is one of my favorites and she never lets me down!!! The comedy starts with a situation in the first couple of pages that left me literally rolling on the floor laughing!

LaBrecque's characters jump off the page! The time travel hook had me turning the pages like crazy. The historical parts were great and the sex, as it always is in LaBrecque's books, is steamy! The best part--the romance itself. Always satisfying like the rest of LaBrecque's books. I can't recommend this one highly enough!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Love defeat the barrier of 262 years ( 4.5 stars).......2006-07-12

I thought that this story was pretty good. I started reading the book and it was so good that I couldn't put it down.I took it with me and read on the way to the grocery store. I had to go to sleep at 1am with a few pages left, I took the book to work the following day to finish up at lunch time. I think that give you an idea of how good the book was.

A time travel story it's always a hard thing to write however Jennifer Labrecque did an exceptional job to make a good transition for the reader. The story is about an ER physician (Kate) that was obsessed about a paint of the 1700's exposed at a museum, she gets trick and gets throw at the paint and guess what? she showed up naked and what she saw, it was better than the man in the paint. The man(Darach) was dark, strong and sexy and with SEX spell all over him.
The characters are very well develop. I really liked Darach because I like strong heroes. I don't like weak men, it's no fun. Who does it?
These two people struggle and fight to stay together even with the barrier of 262 years in between.

The story is great, fun and very sensual, so if you need a couple of good laughs pick this one up and you won't be dissapointed.I am a big fan of Jennifer Labrecque so all I have to say is GREAT JOB Jen! You did it again.
I might don't tell you anything else about the story; you might like to read it yourself.
Have fun!

Unlike the other review. I thought this was a wonderful book. I have read over 250 romance novels and this one kept me up all night. i mean, granted the guy is controlling and powerful but what can one expect from a 18th century laird? It wasnt as though Kate was a weakling. She stood up for herself and showed that women of this century were not someone to mess around with. It was funny and interesting and I definitly want to read more of the Perfect Timing Series.

4 out of 5 stars What a beautiful sequel.......2004-04-10

English has just done a lovely job here. There is a softness about her stories (not to be confused with lack of drama) that is like a breath of fresh air. Not shallow fluff atall, but a subtle gentility that I really enjoy after some of the more angst-riddled dramas I get caught up in.

This sequel was just as sweet and magical as The Border Bride and provides much more follow up than I ever expected of Jemmy & Alyson's life (rather than the cameo appearance in many sequels) while carving a warm place in our hearts for Alistair, also.

When last we left our H\H of The Border Bride it was a qualified happy ending. Great love found, yes, but it was also clear that they had a tough road ahead of them.

Now we come full circle. Alistair is redeemed and in a big and believable way; ie redeemed through human growth and acquiring perspective. We see a lot of things made right and get another welcome view of Jemmy & Alyson's love.

Do read Border Bride first. You will enjoy this one twice as much. Then prepare for an utterly satisfying 'happy ending' when you finish Laird. *sigh* Very nice, Elizabeth.

The only reason I don't give this 5 stars is because I would love for it to have been longer. The material was certainly there for it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sequel.......2002-10-14

Wow! This new author has just exploded on the scene with her second novel and sequel to the Border Bride! Her Star is certainly rising and I advise all of you out there to watch her.

This is the sequel to The Border Bride - and although I would say that it can and does stand alone, your enjoyment will be doubled if you read the other first and then pick up this one. In reading the Border Bride, I was not overly fond of our hero Alistair Kirallen but in the opening of this sequel, you begin to see what motivated him to this point in his life and you come to care deeply, as he struggles to overcome his feelings of guilt and rage. The author, lets you see into his heart, and the reader can feel his pain and deep abiding sorrow over the loss and blame he feels towards his foster brother Ian.

There is a touch of the mystical here, where Alistair first sees the woman who will pull him back to the land of the living. Alistair and Deirdre met in a dream, but when the reality of life puts them together the all encompassing sexual attraction is sizzling, but extremely dangerous for both. Deirdre Maxwell is the heroine in this story, the very battered and abused wife of a madman in a neighboring clan, Brodie Maxwell, and Alistair did not know she was Brodie's wife when he signed on with him as a `sword for hire'.

What follows is an edge of your seat thriller that had me biting my nails as it seemed as though these two would never get together, due to battles, treachery, and inopportune moments of guilt. As in her previous novel, you will also be amused by the entrance of the ghostly spectre of Alistair's foster brother Ian. Their conversation/arguing back in forth when no one else could see him was an amusing touch. All in all, this book is destined for my keeper shelf and Ms. English will become an immediate buy! Outstanding work and I cannot wait for the next offering whom I hope will cover Ronan, and young Robin and Maeve.

They met once upon a dream....

And found each other in reality....

Alistair Kirallen was banished from his clan a year previous. He was angry and bitter, feeling he devoted his entire life to helping the Kirallen clan, only to be cast aside when the prodigal son, Jemmy, returned. Alistair has but one purpose, to avenge the death of his brother, Ian, who had been ambushed and murdered in cold blood, by the dreaded enemy, the Darnleys. After roaming aimlessly for a while, only to strike out in his quest, he finds himself back on Kirallen land, living with an old priest, Fergus, in a cave on the outskirts. Fergus sends him off for a cleansing ritual, and hopefully a vision of guidance. Neither ever expected that guidance to come in the form of a beautiful wood sprite, named Deirdre, who comes to Alistair in a dream.

Deirdre is a young woman, very real indeed, who is trapped in a not only loveless, but also brutal marriage as well. All she cares about is protecting her young daughter, Maeve, from the wrath of her father, Brodie Maxwell. She hopes to someday escape the prison she finds herself in, taking her daughter with her, and returning to her beloved home in Ireland, Donegal. She had all but given up hope when a vision of a man appears to her at her favorite haven of peace. She knows it is but a dream though, having dreamed of him before, but never finding this man who stirred her heart and soul. So imagine her stunned reaction upon meeting her dream man in the flesh, as the newest of her husband's swordsmen.

Alistair and Deirdre are stunned to find they dream partner in the flesh, but they can do nothing about their passion for each other as she is married and Alistair believes he is a walking dead man. How else could he have escaped the slaughter that stole Ian from him, as well as all of Ian's men? When Brodie ends up missing and presumed dead from a skirmish, Deirdre decides now is her time to escape, especially since Brodie's father is determined to marry her to his other son, Kinnon. Alistair leaves about the same time and he and Deirdre end up making the journey together. Now nothing stands in the way of their being together, except his morbid belief that Death is stalking him.

When escape appears impossible, they end up in the home of the Kirallens, the laird near death, and Alistair must finally come to terms with his obsession. He has been haunted by a recurring nightmare, reliving the day Ian was killed, and he is convinced there is meaning to this dream, though he can't find it. But when he comes back into the fold of the Kirallens, many believe him a traitor still and danger is around every corner for himself, Deirdre, and Jemmy. Will Alistair resolve his plight before he loses Deirdre forever? And will he uncover the meaning of his dream before the danger stalking them all, calls them all to death alongside Ian?

Ms. English had a tough job on her hands here, making this reviewer come around on the opinion held of Alistair. He was not at all liked in The Border Bride, coming across as "far too bitter, and a bit too power hungry" as quoted from the review written. But she does a wonderful job of redeeming him, and making it understood just why he felt the way he did. Admittedly, it takes most of the book to succeed in this, but that is the idea of a character-driven novel, for the characters to grow and change through their relationships with others.

Once again the book is richly detailed and a very colorful rendering of Scotland is presented. There is even a tough of the paranormal in this story, as seen through Alistair's foreboding dreams. A very impressive sophomore effort by Ms. English, and her talent is no less evident here, in fact it is more noticeable and growth seen. One can't help but fall in love with her characters and the accounts of their adventures. The reader will be left wanting, not because this story was disappointing, it isn't in the slightest, but wanting to read more about the Kirallen clan and their friends.

Rich details, captivating people, plenty of adventure and expectations for more, have become trademarks of Ms. English's novels. This reviewer would love to see more and watch her talent for creating beautiful stories grow and change, to an even more captivating story. Kudos to Ms. English for penning a delight and making even this reader fall in love with Alistair.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific sequel to a fine book.......2002-01-15

With Laird of the Mist Elizabeth English has given her readers a terrific sequel to The Border Bride. For those of us who couldn't put down Border Bride, Ms. English has served up another page-turner as she traces the adventures of Allistair in 14th Century Scotland. You don't have to have read Border Bride to enjoy this book, but you'll want to after you finish Laird. Let's hope a third book is planned in this highly engaging series.
