Coaching advise from athletic coaches.......2007-06-27
A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

avid reader.......2007-05-14
Debbie Macomber never ceases to amaze me with her imagination and creativity in all of her works that I have read. She keeps you interested and has a little bit of everything - romance, relationships, mystery - in her stories. I enjoy the fact that there is a sequel to the serial stories wherein you can see what happens to the characters in the next novel. Can't wait for the Heart of Texas Vol. 2 to come!!
Heart of Texas Vol. 1 .......2007-03-09
I have not read any of Debbie Macomber's book that I haven't enjoyed and had not been a page turner. Her Heart of Texas series is so real to life and you feel like you are part of the story; you are taken in from the first page to the very last. The people in the story and the Texas towns are described so well that you want to go visit and meet all the folks you are reading about. You laugh and you cry with them; you enjoy the visit through every page. As long as Debbie writes books I am going to buy them and enjoy every word. Debbies books should get a million stars.
Debbie Does it Again!.......2007-03-06
One of the things that I love most about Debbie Macomber's stories is that she continues them in a series of books. I never really feel like I am saying, "Good-bye," to her characters. They become friends that I can continue to visit with each new book in the series. And Debbie does not disappoint with this series. Her characters are very well-developed as are the storylines. (I'm still wondering what's happening at Bitter End!)

Nell's Cowboy by Debbie Macomber (Large Print Mills & Boon Hardcover).......2006-11-04
Fifth book in the Heart of Texas series (also known as Sons of Promise): Lonesome Cowboy, Texas Two-Step, Caroline's Child, Dr. Texas, Nell's Cowboy, and Lone Star Baby. Nell's Cowboy is the book in the series in which the mystery of the ghost town of Bitter End is finally solved.
Description from the book back cover:
Nell Bishop, widowed mother of two, is turning Twin Canyons into a dude ranch. Her first guest is Travis Grant, an Easterner known for his children's books. Nell's kids are crazy about him, and Nell could fall for him herself. But it's too soon to be thinking of love and marriage again. Not only that, Travis seems intent on stirring up the town - uncovering the mystery in its past.
SONS OF PROMISE: They're rugged, proud and just a little sassy! They'll make you laugh and they'll make you cry. Meet them all in Promise, Texas.
Not One of Her Best.......2003-10-30
I have read many books by Debbie Macomber, and this one was the least interesting. It really seemed to drag, had fewer characters and story lines than the other books. Nell and Travis, the two main characters of this book are not quite as interesting as the other match ups that usually populate her novels. The mystery of Bitter End does get solved, but that part of the story was really slow. Also, I felt that the minor characters like Nell's two children and her mother-in-law were not very well drawn.
I know that Debbie Macomber fans are very loyal, so I am sorry if this offends some of you, but maybe I have read too many of her books with the same plot.
Nell & a Second Chance.......2000-06-08
I Loved this book I could not put it down. This is a wonderful story at a second chance of love. I would love to return to Promise. I have over and over with the whole series. The stories are wonderful and you can't get enough.
Nell gets her cowboy-after she makes him over from a Yankee.......1998-08-24
I want to move to Promise as soon as I get some directions from Debbie. I'll bring my own cowboy, but i love her charecters. I don't even care if I get to go to the ghost town. Nell's a widow trying to make it on her own after losing her husband, Not only does she have two kids to take care of, but an elderly mother-in-law doesn't leave her much time. Debbie Macober is a great big "BUY ME" sign as far as i'm conceerned. No weak women in her books. Even the spinsters are someone you wish you knew.
An acceptable continuation.......1998-06-26
The 5th story in the Sons of Texas series seems to be the pivotal book in the continuing Bitter End Saga. The mystery of Bitter End is finally solved.... if you've read the other four books, you definitely want to know this, but the story of Nell and Travis seems to be lost in the process. If you haven't read the other Sons of Texas books, don't read this one first!!!!

The best available intro to Tuvan music - if you can find it.......2002-09-28
I've got several CDs of Tuvan music, and this one is the best introduction for someone new to the subject. Tuva is a small region in Russian Asia, nestled in the mountains between Siberia and Mongolia. Herders who got bored spending their days in the countryside on horseback developed throat-singing, in which a singer can sing two notes at once, a low drone and a higher melody. The high part is produced from the overtones of the low note. The style began with a cappella singing, then was extended to include music on banjo- and violin-like instruments, with a rhythm like American cowboy music. This CD includes plenty of songs by Kongar-ool Ondar and Kaigal-ool Khovalyg, two of the first Tuvans to tour America. There are several examples of various styles of hoomei (the Tuvan word for throat-singing--the English spelling of this and ALL Tuvan words varies from album to album), including by an 11-year-old student of Ondar's. There are examples of modern variations on Tuvan music, including the title track from the "Fly, Fly My Sadness" collaboration album between Tuvan group Huun-Huur-Tu and the Bulgarian women's choir Angelite. And there is Paul Pena, the blind American blues singer (and writer of Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner") who learned throat-singing on his own and won an award at a Tuvan throat-singing festival, as chronicled in the Oscar-nominated documentary "Genghis Blues". (The CD suggests that it includes a live version of Pena's award-winning performance, but doesn't explain how he could be playing two guitars at once.) My only complaint with the CD is that there is too much of Mikhail Alperin's Tuvan-Russian hybrid projects (4 tracks), and not enough traditional Tuvan songs done with instruments, especially the banjo-like doshpuluur. A perfect Tuvan compilation would include the caravan-drivers' song ("Tying Siirtuktiilerining Iri") and "Ches Bulungum"; for those, look for the CD "Tuva: Voices from the Land of the Eagles".
What makes this CD a better choice than "Land of the Eagles" is the 64-page book on Tuva that is included in the "Deep in the Heart" package. It provides an introduction to Tuvan history and culture, important notes on cuisine (like a recipe for blood sausage, and how to prepare and serve the honored dish "Fat of Lamb's Tail"), and simple explanations of how to throat-sing. For example, to perform the whistling sound of the sygyt style of hoomei, put your mouth in the position to make the sound "ur" as in "urn", tighten your throat, and do a Kermit the Frog impersonation as you sing "ur-ee, ur-ee". Now go practice.
good insight into Tuvan music, both traditional and modern.......1997-11-01
Although I prefer The Orphan's Lament by Huun Huur Tu, Deep in the Heart of Tuva provides much more information on Tuvan culture and the background of Tuvan music than does any other Tuvan CD. The accompanying book is very nicely done but the section on how throat-singing is accomplished could be better executed (although currently I know of nothing better). This CD is not traditional although it features several traditional numbers--it also has several numbers which show clearly how Tuvans (and non-Tuvans as well) are blending traditional elements with western influences to create results that can appeal to both cultures. If you want to hear true mastery get The Orphan's Lament; if you want a good overview and are not familiar with Tuvan music this is the CD for you.
You have to hear it to believe it........1997-07-27
After reading the Feynman/Leighton books, especially Tuva or Bust, this CD/book is a must. Tuvan throat singing has to be heard to be believed. It's actually beautiful when you become used to it. It is a wonderful companion to the Ralph Leighton's Tuva or Bust book. Reading the book first helps you appreciate this CD/book. I play it for my students. In 5 years, I have never heard a negative comment about the Feynman/Leighton books being required reading in my courses. (My courses are in finance)

From You, Me & The Kids series.......2004-03-10
Country music star Melinda Kimbrough, known to her fans as Misty, disappears after a sell-out concert, determined to break the stranglehold her manager has over her life. Now twenty-six, Wes has managed her life since her father died when she was sixteen. The open-ended contract they have is virtually unbreakable but Melinda needs out before she breaks down. With millions in bank accounts she cannot touch, Melinda resorts to living on the streets of LA until she hears about a ranch for teens needing a new start.
Linc Parker might be a financial wizard to the stars, but it was not enough to save his teen sister from suicide when an audition left her desperately depressed. To make recompense to the past, he buys Rascal Ranch sight unseen. He expects a working refuge but finds three abandoned wards of the state and bunkhouses with no heat and the entire operation filthy. Before he can even decided what to do about the three young children, five teens arrive in desperate need of a bed. He quickly realizes that Melinda, nicknamed Randi, is no teen and on the run. But does not suspect that she is part of the world of entertainers and celebrities that he has come to despise.
Author Roz Denny Fox has established a solid reputation for stories that touch the heart. Inspired by an overheard conversation in which a star admitted that life at the top is not always rosy, A COWBOY AT HEART captures the challenges of life in the spotlight. With her deft storytelling skill, Fox creates a memorable tale of healing and redemption for a powerful heroine and a man bold enough to learn to love her. The result is a vividly realized tale with remarkable characterizations that cannot help but touch the heart. A COWBOY AT HEART comes very highly recommended.
A VERY MOVING STORY --.......2004-03-08
Lincoln Parker hadn't been around when his younger sister needed him. Looking back he could finally see that he had been guilty of overindulgeing his sister. Too much money and not enough personal time.
He wanted to buy the ranch that Oasis was dumping. Look out mister.
At the same time Miranda Kimbrough was being so stressed out with her singing career that she felt that she had to disappear for a short time.
So she hit the streets with a bunch of kids, kids who had known Linc Parker's sister, Felicity. Could they give him some answers?
Randi and her group of kids hitched up to northern California into the back woods to find this ranch. Only to meet a frustrated Linc at Rascal Ranch where he was left with 3 young children, one in a wheelchair, that were not supposed to be there.
What a mix up! Linc soon learned to chill out and make do, as the kids had learned to. Randi found her heart going out to the youngsters that Linc didn't know how to handle.
Randi eventually gets found out and has to leave - then Linc has money problems with his partner and wouldn't you know, the kids pull them all together.
So much more to the story - you will love Wolfgang, Hana and Cassie and the rock group. Wonderful gang of characters to make a heartwarming story of the young and the adults meshing their lives into a great family group.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- SHOULD BE A KEEPER!

Mom should write a book--.......2007-05-25
Either these girls are terrible writers or their editor should find another line of work. If you can get past that, its interesting to see what life is like for someone whose fortune is their face and body. The three sisters are likeable and interesting, but ya gotta love their mother! THAT'S where the story is!

This is the first book in the Promise, Texas series.......2005-06-22
Those who are fans of Debbie Macomber know what to expect with these series - very light, sweet stories with memorable characters.
In Lonesome Cowboy, Savannah lives with her brother Grady on their ranch. Grady had to work extra hard to keep the ranch together after the death of their parents, as a result he is often short tempered an grouchy. Savannah is a wonderful person, sometimes a little too-good-to-be-true, especially when it comes to her brother Richard (the never-do-well of the family).
Savannah is in her thirties and has resigned herself to never getting married - she hasn't even had a date in years! When she meets a stranded cowboy on the road and offers to give him a lift, and then one thing leads to another - can true love be so quick, and so easy?
What Debbie Macomber does best is create realistic characters - some good, some not so good, and some - it's up to the reader to guess? In this book she is true to her craft, and the characters I met in this book are definitely ones I want to meet again - in the rest of the series.
Sweet, light reading.
Refreshing.......2000-07-14
I was so glad I read this book. It is a light and very refreshing read. I get so tired of reading about men and women who can't stand each other and then within two to three hundred pages fall madly in love and live happily ever after. Come on, life isn't like that. Thank you to Ms. Macomber who realizes that and writes a light book about people who live honest hard-working lives. (And there is just enough evilness in the character of Richard to keep things stirred up a bit.) If you're looking for a book that is a change from streamline romance this book is the one for you!
A truly sweet romance series........1999-01-29
I too prefer clean romance. Nobody does it better than Debbie Macomber. We are a Christian family and so are wary of main line fiction, but I am so taken with Ms. Macomber.... I let my teenaged daughter read all this series. Excellent!
Great Book.......1999-01-28
I really enjoyed meeting the folks of Promise. Debbie does a great job with the story. I fell in love with Savannah and Laredo. Grady is a hard cookie, but he'll soften up. The mystery surrounding Bitter End is intriuging.
Debbie's romp in a series form.......1998-08-01
Debbie Macomber's done it again. She made summer a little more enjoyable with a series. The first is Lonesome Cowboy. She provides excellent tension between hero and heroine with a interesting complications from her two brothers. I had a difficult time trying to choose which one needed smacked on the head first. As another rose fanatic, I loved her correct details on historical roses. I can hardly wait to read the next one, TEXAS TWO STEP.

West coast meets wild west in URBAN COWBOY.......1998-04-24
URBAN COWBOY is a delightful mix of western humor and poignant emotion as Nolan--a widowed LA attorney who dropped out of the rat race to raise his son in Wyoming--and Alex--a divorced Wyoming school teacher with Hollywood dreams--move from being best of friends to best of lovers. For every woman who's been caught between career and family, this book offers hope, laughter and a few tears, not to mention a demonstration of why horses should =not= be kept in the back yard! Enjoy!

Pure fun.......1998-09-03
The heroine is about to give up her non-existent acting career and return home to the American Mid-West when she's hired for one last job--to impersonate a genuine, spoiled princess on a visit to her Wyoming rancher fiance, who also happens to be the second son of a geniune English duke. But the masquerade turns into torture for the heroine, as she falls in love with the other woman's man. This story is lots of fun as the pretend princess spars with her cowboy duke.
