Junie B., First Grader: Dumb Bunny (A Stepping Stone Book(TM))

I love all of Barbara Parks books about Junie B. Jones. I think they should make a movie of this book. I think this is the funniest of all the Junie B.books. If you have a little girl who loves to read or be read to, I cannot recommend all of the Junie B. books enough.

Would make a great addition to any Easter basket! This book is a little better than cheater pants!

5 out of 5 stars Yes to Junie B........2007-07-24

My daughter has the whole collection she love keeping up with Junie B. I have not read a book in it's entire but from what I've read she is a very curious, funny little girl. I recommend this book and all the others also. My daughter was hooked after the 1st Barbara Parks books and althought she is older now she still cracks up laughing when reading. Totaling entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars A very loquacious first grader with a vocabulary far beyond her age .......2007-06-05

After more than 25 books, Barbara Park's series about a very loquacious first grader with a vocabulary far beyond her age (and the writing ability to go with it) is still going strong. So I suspended my disbelief and read JUNIE B., FIRST GRADER: DUMB BUNNY to my six-year-old.

In this adventure, the rich girl in class, Lucille, invites everyone over to her mansion to participate in an over-the-top Easter Egg Hunt that will result in a play date in Lucille's heated indoor swimming pool. Lucille wants her boyfriend Sheldon to win, but Junie B. and her arch-nemesis May (the original "dumb bunny" in the title until Junie B. gets something of a comeuppance later on) are ready to pounce, pound and scrabble their opponents in order to get a dip in that grand pool.

There is a lot of falling down and Batman-type expletives (WHOOSH! SMASH!), and the kids are none too nice to each other until Junie B., in a sudden acknowledgment of good judgment, makes a quick and well-appreciated sacrifice to save the day. We laughed at some of the pratfalls, and Lucille's annoyed Nanna character was amusing as well. Junie B. shares the stage with a lot of different people, but she is clearly the star of the show, the story told from her point of view.

Whether humiliated in a pink bunny suit or gloating over her lack of selfishness, Junie B. thinks in capital letters with lots of exclamation points and writes in her journal about what she has learned. The journal entries are cute and engaging, and spell out the moral of the story without being too pointed, which we appreciated.

If this is your first Junie B. foray, it might be helpful to go back and read some of the earlier books first to relax into her strange environment. Otherwise, DUMB BUNNY certainly will offer fans of the series more of what they have come to expect from this little girl and her friends.

My daughter love this series. It's a little hard for me to read due to the poor grammar and name calling. Let's face it though most first graders have poor grammar. There are worse things that she could be reading. We have all of these books and they are well loved.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious tale.......2007-04-14

Barbara Park's JUNIE B. FIRST GRADER: DUMB BUNNY provides another excellent first grader tale: this taking place at Easter and telling of an Easter egg hunt with an unusual prize. But Junie B. gets stuck wearing an impossible costume and a series of mishaps might prevent her from her goals in this hilarious tale for grades 4-6.

From her work with insulin-resistant patients with Type II diabetes, Dr. Schwarzbein concludes that low-fat diets cause heart attacks, eating fat makes you lose body fat, and it's important to eat high-cholesterol foods every day. Picture cardiologists and dieticians tearing their hair out and overweight people cheering as they dive into Eggs Benedict with sausage.

According to Schwarzbein, the high-carbohydrate, low-fat, moderate-protein diet that most dieticians and disease-prevention organizations recommend is the culprit that turns people into diabetics, makes them age faster and get degenerative diseases, and keeps them fat and unhealthy. She supports her theory with case studies of people who were sick and miserable on high-carbo, low-fat diets and who sprang to life when they "balanced" their diets with more fat and protein. Schwarzbein recommends avoiding "man-made carbohydrates"--processed carbs--in favor of those you could "pick, gather or milk." She instructs patients to eat "as much good fat as their body needs": eggs, avocados, flaxseed oil, butter, mayonnaise, and olive oil. Sorry, but fried foods and hydrogenated fats are "bad fats," or "damaged fats," as Schwarzbein calls them. You can eat as many eggs a day as you want on this plan, plus meat (even sausage--as long as it's nitrate-free--and pâté), saturated fat, cream, and nonstarchy vegetables. The book includes a four-week meal plan and about 15 recipes.

Book Description

This groundbreaking book dispels the myths perpetuated by some bestselling diet books that may help people lose weight, but will put them on the fast track to disease. Based on sound research and the success of thousands of people, The Schwarzbein Principle proves that excess weight, degenerative disease and accelerated aging can be controlled - and reversed - in a healthful way. The Schwarzbein Principle is a holistic guide to achieving lasting weight loss, normalizing metabolism and maintaining ideal body composition through lifestyle and nutrition. By bringing the internal systems into balance, the Schwarzbein program has been proven to: reverse type II diabetes; free people from food cravings for chocolate, caffeine and sugar; cure depression and mood swings; and reduce body fat while building lean tissue. The nutritional program consists of two phases -Healing and Maintenance - which are easy to adopt into any lifestyle. Instead of shunning fat, the program advocates eating all of the good fats and proteins your body needs as well as an unlimited portion of non-starchy carbohydrates. By incorporating the lifestyle components of stress management, exercise and eliminating harmful stimulants, program participants experience renewed energy and vitality. Don't forget to check out the cookbooks!

5 out of 5 stars Oh, my Goodness! .......2007-06-03

When I read this book, said, "WOW, this makes sense!" I have been on a good vitamin regime that includes progesterone and following the diet in this book. [...] In two months of the suppliments and progesterone and one month on this diet, I have; no more daily headaches, have slept better, feel refreshed upon waking for the first time in decades, lost 12 pounds, don't feel deprived, lost my cravings for sugar and processed cabs, have better moods, have quite a lot less muscle and joint pain, have more energy, enjoy sex more, have people tell me I am looking good, lost that puffy look in my face and body, have softer skin, my roscaea has lessened, my intestinal and uterine pain has gone away, and my allergies are a lot less, therefore my asthma is not as bad. I am 52, menopausal, with a top weight of 249, (now 237) with chronic pain and headaches. I am unbelievably happy about this diet and plan to continue it to become healthy and strong again. I have a long ways to go, but the start is amazing. I started out with adding butter and cream to my diet and stopped eating sugar and white carbs. I have always had cravings for sugar, but as soon as I got my fill of good fats, I lost my sugar cravings and have not been tempted to eat sugary or processed foods since. I have the cookbook on order and I am reading the other two books Dr. Schwarzbein has written. If you want to be healthy and feel better, read this book and go through her recommendations. You won't regret it. Just be aware that you may feel worse for a short time and then feel much better, it is your body making adjustments and is temporary. It depends on how sick and out of balance your body and system is. You have to stick with it to get good results. I have to say that I certainly do not feel deprived and feel satisfied.

5 out of 5 stars Sensible eating and great for food addictions.......2007-05-30

I am now sold. was 80% there but after 5 pregnancies in 6 years, things went awry. then my mom went to the ER with a blood sugar of 887. I am now 42 with a 10 month old and two other young kids. Mom's visit got my attention. I immediately lost 6 pounds then switched to a cleanse by standard process which was very easy since i was eating pretty healthy anyway. When i got this book, i also signed up for womentowomen personal program. between the diet and the supplements and natural progesterone cream, i was a new woman almost immediately. my chocolate and wine cravings disappeared nearly overnite. I have alot of work to do still, have 20 pounds to go and have to find balance but food in this plan is balanced and a no brainer. even my meat and taters hubby drinks my veggie/fruit/avacado/protein (balanced) smoothies every day. he is hooked. our moods are better, more even. Now am working on my PMS and other menopause issues ala "what your doctor does not tell you about premenopause" by dr. Lee/Hanley and Uzzi Reice (sp?) book. just had my saliva hormones tested and am on the path to join my other girlfriends that feel fabulous. This is not a miracle, it takes a while to get back to a normal eating plan so your body is balanced and not starving. but, its a great plan. I recommend it to my friends. I am now 11 pounds down and headed for 20 more, 5 at at time. And, its not Atkins, you eat veggies and fruits and all things good. you don't eat crap though and i chose to give up coffee (and creamer) as well as limiting my alcohol intake. That with the diet, the good supplements and the natural pg cream, let's just say my husband will keep me a bit longer now (he wanted to hide me in the dumpster from mood swings up until now!!!).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-06

I feel no one should be without this very important book, we refer to information in it everyday to patients who want to become healthy again.

I would not be without it.

5 out of 5 stars Good and bad carbs and fats........2007-04-01

An easy diet plan that explains the difference between good and bad carbs, and good and bad fats, plus explaining the influence of food on hormone imbalances.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!!.......2007-01-20

This book is fantastic! My mom actually turned me on to it after reading it herself. It taught me so much about the foods we eat and the foods we should eat. It also talks a lot about carbs. (good and bad) I had no idea that what I had been eating was really destroying my health.(physical and mental) This book was so easy to read and understand. In my oppinion, next to the Bible this is another book that everyone needs to read!!!(at least once) And the diet plan is the easiest I have ever seen!

Book Description

For too long, religion has been a political plaything of theright-wing in this country. American churches seem more concerned with whatpeople do with their bodies than with their souls. Now, Kathleen KennedyTownsend issues a spiritual call to arms to those who feel like her thattoday's churches--Catholic and Protestant alike--are failing to promote thewelfare of those who depend upon them. After recounting her personal storyin one of the most prominent Catholic families in America, she shows howAmerica's neediest are now forgotten while their churches fight politicalbattles against abortion rights and homosexual marriages. She provides hopethrough powerful examples of individuals effecting change, from obscuresocial workers to The Purpose-Driven- Life's Rick Warren, and maintainsthat our individual actions can return our churches to their traditionalrole as shepherds to their flock.

1 out of 5 stars Mrs. Townson is out of touch.......2007-08-26

Mrs. Townson needs to learn a little more about how and why this Country were founded before she write a book on this subject.
Infact she should learn a litle more about the Book she wants to judge.
If this country were run like it was set to run by our Founding Fathers we would not have the problems we have today.
We have too many other ideas and agenda's being presented and we have followed them and are no longer a Christian country. If this keeps up we will be taken over by the Muslims, like they have said.
Mrs. Townson you have been listening to Uncle Ted for too long.

4 out of 5 stars Fair and balanced commentary.......2007-08-16

I absolutely agree with the theme of this book. I came into the Catholic faith a few years ago in a parish that emphasized social justice above all else and it was a big reason behind my decision to become Catholic. I have since moved and cannot find a parish that makes this central tenet of Christianity a central part of their teachings. It's so sad but perhaps this book can help awaken people to these failings of our religious leaders and demand change.

4 out of 5 stars A reminder of the gospels so many Christians have forgotten.......2007-08-01

Townsend's book is a necessary call to those who style themselves Christians yet imagine that they can pursue riches (Jesus was against riches and the rich: re especially Luke and the parable of Lazarus and the rich man (sometimes Lazarus and Dives, as Dives is Latin for rich man), advocate capital punishment (Jesus: let he who is without sin cast the first stone), love weapons (no warrant for that in the NT), ignore the plight of the poor and wretched, and justify any war at all, let alone aggressive war, as in Iraq.

4 out of 5 stars Call for a Religious Left.......2007-07-27

In "Failing America's Faithful", RFK's oldest daughter states that the Christian church in the United States, has moved away from its traditional roles of providing charity and promoting social justice. Instead, churches are primarily involved in one or both of the following:

a. Political battles about personal moral issues (sex, abortion, etc.)
b. A type of "individualist" Christianity where participants emphasize their own spiritual growth and needs, and maybe perhaps those of their immediate community, but de-emphasizing, ignoring or even walling themselves off from the issues that affect society at large.

Along with the right-wing evangelicals and the mainstream Protestant denominations, Ms. Kennedy's own Catholic Church is up for criticism too; not only abortion but contraception is banned there, and women are not allowed to be priests. (A whole chapter is devoted to the position of women in the Catholic Church).

The book covers some of the Kennedy family history, including her own childhood experiences, as well as the Church's (both Protestant and Catholic) place in the labor, civil rights, and anti-war movements through the years. But within the past twenty years or so, public Christianity in the United States has largely been co-opted by the Right; the Left is now mostly secular, and often hostile to religion. There is a Religious Left, but it is relatively small and quiet.

According to Kennedy, a true "Christian Nation" would be actively involved in supporting causes such as civil rights, women's rights, welfare for the poor, environmental issues, etc. rather than being involved in moral judgements, supporting "business conservative" concerns such as lower taxes, or promoting individual spiritual comfort. Secularism alone will not bring about a more just nation; a spiritual basis is required. The relationship between religion and politics should not be a "wall" but a "window" where they can observe and influence each other, but not unduly.

Essentially, she's calling for a stronger "Christian Left" to counter the "Christian Right". This may already be happening in some form, with even the evangelicals taking a closer look at environmental issues and such, not just slavishly following the lead of the business conservatives.

My only real criticism of this book, is that Kennedy basically wants the church to switch from one set of political battles to another more in line with her own political beliefs. That's fine, but to be a church, and not just a secular charity or political action group, there should be a definite spiritual structure. I would have liked to see a little more Biblical support for some of her positions. But that's just me....

5 out of 5 stars Progressive Christians should read this.......2007-07-21

If you think Christianity has potential, but has lost its way, read this. The author does a good job of pointing out the loss of direction of the dominant Christian faiths in American today. She especially points out the self-serving nature of Catholic and evangelical Christian religions and their neglect of the social gospel.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2007-06-11

I'm new to network marketing but not new to the law of attraction and motivational interviewing so when I read this book it was exciting for me to see how all three things could go together! It really helped me to view sales in a positive light and see how I can actually help others through network marketing. I've already used motivational interviewing as a nurse but never thought of how it could be applied in this way. The book is well written and easy to follow. Of course the stragtegies in the book need to be practiced, practiced, practiced before becomming second nature, but that's true of any new skill. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic guide.......2007-05-24

This is the best book I've read on network marketing. It is a definite keeper and I have recommended this to people in my up and down-lines. Don't worry about approaching people. This gives you step by step guidelines and sample scripts, but most importantly shows you how to adapt them and make them your own. Nothing worse than canned words, you need to live and breathe what you market.

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for a network marketer.......2007-05-14

If you want to be a successful network marketer, you know that you will need to ask enough questions to figure out if you can help your prospect or move on to the next. This book shows you how to ask questions naturally. Read this before you ever talk to one person about your business! It even helps in personal relationships! Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars The Bridge Over Troubled Network Marketing Waters.......2007-02-20

If you are in network marketing, this book can only help you. What a great book. It is a book that makes sense. I bought this book and I had two very productive conversations immediately. People thanked me as opposed to "how fast can I get away from this salesperson?"
Something in me had changed because of this information and people were a whole lot more receptive to what I had to say - because for the first time I knew what to say - and when. My intentions all along have been good but sometimes the words got in the way in the past and halted communication.
No one can teach you what they have not done so if you need an mlm boost this is the route, I think this book should sell for about $1000.00, so get yours now!!!
Looking forward to going to the top in my company!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read.....................2007-01-09

If you have any involvement in Network Marketing this is a must read. It really gets into the essence of what Network Marketing should be about which is building relationships and helping people. This book gives you a step by step blueprint for putting the fun back into your network marketing business instead of working with with fear, anxiety and the loss of friendship. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to build their business in a way that will last.

4 out of 5 stars This book was an eye opener.......2007-09-20

I read The Complete Guide to Real Estate Tax Liens and Foreclosures in one weekend. It is very consice and gets right to the point. It was fun researching some of the suggested sites and actually seeing some of the properties that were listed. I am a detail person, and I would have preferred to get more details on some of the pitfalls that I may face in making these purchases, but Don Sausa does have a unique ability to take a complex subject and simplify it for all readers. I think this is a great book for anyone who needs to know about purchasing tax liens and deeds. There are so many rip-off programs out there and people are paying alot for them. I applaud Mr. Sausa for his consumer friendly book and the website support. It is a great value!

4 out of 5 stars Good starting book.......2007-08-10

I want to give this book a star of 4.5 because I think it is clear and straight to the point about the topics. It helped me understand what kind of investment it is and more importantly, it tells me about the possible risks/problems. There are many books about the same topics and many of them simply address too much about the "easy, simple and safe" side of the investment. The reality is all successful investment takes some research. But this book doesn't seem to be hiding any potential problems and certainly showed me a clearer picture of this type of investment and how to do it. I recommend it for anyone who is interested in this field, especially beginners. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Know your state laws.......2007-07-12

I truly enjoyed this book. But I've learned that our state (NC) does not have tax lien certificates or deeds to play with like this book teaches. However, this does not mean one cannot use the information in another state that allows this activity. If you only want to do this in your residential state, find out first if it is allowed. If not, I wouldn't waste my time researching further.

5 out of 5 stars A practical, solid guide to an excellent alternative.......2007-06-04

Tax lien expert Don Sausa presents The Complete Guide to Real Estate Tax Liens and Foreclosure Deeds, a guide for lay readers of modest means and up to investing in a secure market favored by the rich - government tax auctions, in which tax lien certificates and tax deeds are sold for pennies on the market value dollar. Designed for quick-study in seven days or less, The Complete Guide to Real Estate Tax Liens and Foreclosure Deeds covers where to find tax auctions, important research that one should undertake before the auction, bidding types and strategies, how to flip tax liens, and much more. A practical, solid guide to an excellent alternative to investing in the volatile stock market or lower-yield bonds, featuring numerous sample checklists, state-by-state summaries of auction types, and much more to help any reader get started in the market. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read.......2007-06-02

This is an enjoyable light reading on tax liens. Although the book says you can learn it in seven days, I think you can probably read through this entire book in about six hours. You don't carry a huge bunch of pages with useless glossaries. It goes straight to the point and step by step. I also recommend reading Profit by Investing in Real Estate Tax Liens: Earn Safe, Secured, and Fixed Returns Every Time by Loftis. Our local library showcased these two books actually during the tax season. I don't think they knew these books were actually for real estate tax liens rather than personal taxes. But I'm glad they showed it!

To break it down, here's why I like this book --

a. It's a very easy read, you can get done with it in 6 hours.

b. It's cheaper than a tax lien system I found online by supposed gurus who charge an arm and a leg. yikes!

c. It's written by someone who actually buys tax liens and not just someone that writes for a living. Those books tend to "look great" but lacking in content.

d. It isn't boring, it is illustrated.

2 out of 5 stars Confusing!.......2007-08-02

This book suggests only eating foods in proper combinations, a protein, complex carb, vegetable and Essential fat. It is too restictive, for instance to never eat fruit alone is a little hard to swallow. There are times when this is just not possible. So with my banana I'm suppose to try a piece of pork, a rice cake and how about a couple of fish oil capsules?
Real appetizing if not nauseating!

4 out of 5 stars Lifestyle change program.......2007-01-05

This program entails a complete change of lifestyle and achieving good health through a balance of eating right, exercising appropriately and having a balance of natural hormones. It is not a diet plan or weight loss program like other curriculums.

5 out of 5 stars Coming Off Of A Decade Of Low Carbing.......2006-09-26

I have been a low-carber through the Somersizing program for a very long time. My husband was the one really---who wanted to incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables into our diets. We were quite concerned about gaining weight back at accelerated speeds. (Anyone who has done Atkins knows what I mean by that). We gave the Schwarzbein Principle--The Program one week to see how we felt. We added back whole grains in moderation, potatoes, yams, brown rice and other starches. We also added back more fruits, remembering to eat them in combination with proteins and fats. We both got on the scale this morning. My husband has lost 5 lbs and I have lost 3 lbs. in just one week. This is an extremely balanced approach that we are enjoying immensely.

5 out of 5 stars It Really Works!.......2006-08-16

I've been trying to loose some weight and get healthier for so long. This book was suggested to me by my Dr. I tried it and it really works. I have lost 17 pounds in 2 months, and it wasn't even that tough. It all has to do with watching the type of carbs that you eat and keeping a balance with protein.

For anyone that has had a problem getting to a healthy weight and staying there, I highly suggest this book. Read it and see what you think. The author explains it well and her cookbook is also great for new recipes and suggested foods to enjoy. It really works and you will feel better and become healthier in the process.

5 out of 5 stars Changed My Life.......2006-06-09

This book was the first time I found a structure that would work for me to eat right, destress and get healthy. It works! I have gone from being tired all the time and not being able to exercise to doing moderate exercise and depression has lifted. Have also lost 15 lbs in a little over 2 months. I still can't sleep through the night as she suggests but am working on it.

For anyone who wants to understand our bodies and how to heal them and lose weight I highly recommend this book.

In this autobiography, Virgin Group founder Richard Branson says one of his prime business criteria is "fun." Fun made Branson a billionaire, and few business memoirs are one-billionth as fun as Branson's, nor as niftily written. Not only does it relate his side of near-death corporate experiences, it tells how the chairman literally cheated death by gun, shipwreck, and balloon crash.

Branson's empire--now encompassing interests in an airline, pop music, soda pop, e-commerce, and financial services--began when the dyslexic 16-year-old dropped out of school in 1968 to found the British magazine Student. His headmaster said, "I predict that you will either go to prison or become a millionaire." Briefly imprisoned for dodging customs selling records, Branson got his first million by releasing Tubular Bells, a maverick recording all the stuffy executives rejected. (1998's Tubular Bells III puts the series' sales over 20 million.)

Despite wild tales of Branson's wife-swapping and Keith Richards fleeing naked from Branson's studio at gunpoint with another man's woman, the most shocking parts of the memoir concern British Airways' James Bond-like "dirty tricks" campaign against Virgin Atlantic, resulting in the biggest award for damages in English history.

Though it's filled with famous names, witty quotes, and pulse-pounding accounts of lunatic balloon adventures, it is as a business thriller that the book really scores. His instinctive bet-the-ranch tactics could cost him all, or earn another billion. Either way, Branson will likely remain the most entertaining entrepreneur in Europe. --Tim Appelo

Book Description

"Oh, screw it, let's do it."

That's the philosophy that has allowed Richard Branson, in slightly more than twenty-five years, to spawn so many successful ventures. From the airline business (Virgin Atlantic Airways), to music (Virgin Records and V2), to cola (Virgin Cola), to retail (Virgin Megastores), and nearly a hundred others, ranging from financial services to bridal wear, Branson has a track record second to none.

Losing My Virginity is the unusual, frequently outrageous autobiography of one of the great business geniuses of our time. When Richard Branson started his first business, he and his friends decided that "since we're complete virgins at business, let's call it just that: Virgin." Since then, Branson has written his own "rules" for success, creating a group of companies with a global presence, but no central headquarters, no management hierarchy, and minimal bureaucracy.

Many of Richard Branson's companies--airlines, retailing, and cola are good examples--were started in the face of entrenched competition. The experts said, "Don't do it." But Branson found golden opportunities in markets in which customers have been ripped off or underserved, where confusion reigns, and the competition is complacent.
And in this stressed-out, overworked age, Richard Branson gives us a new model: a dynamic, hardworking, successful entrepreneur who lives life to the fullest. Family, friends, fun, and adventure are equally important as business in Branson's life. Losing My Virginity is a portrait of a productive, sane, balanced life, filled with rich and colorful stories:

Crash-landing his hot-air balloon in the Algerian desert, yet remaining determined to have another go at being the first to circle the globe

Signing the Sex Pistols, Janet Jackson, the Rolling Stones, Boy George, and Phil Collins

Fighting back when British Airways took on Virgin Atlantic and successfully suing this pillar of the British business establishment

Swimming two miles to safety during a violent storm off the coast of Mexico

Selling Virgin Records to save Virgin Atlantic

Staging a rescue flight into Baghdad before the start of the Gulf War . . .

And much more. Losing My Virginity is the ultimate tale of personal and business survival from a man who combines the business prowess of Bill Gates and the promotional instincts of P. T. Barnum.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-10-01

I have read this book three times. Branson does business the way we should all aspire to do business. He has built businesses that he is passionate about. He enjoys his life and has been exceptionally successful. I find it to be an inspiring and enjoyable read. Probably why I have returned to it multiple times.

5 out of 5 stars The best book I've read!.......2007-09-24

This is probably the best book I've ever read so far. Its not a business book, so read it as you would "literature" over a weekend... but its filled with great entertaining stories and helps you see how this guy's life has been. And you definitely learn some lessons.

If you are an entrepreneur, you MUST read Losing my Virginity!

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read. Buy it!.......2007-09-14

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

I'm not big on reading autobiographies, but this one I really enjoyed, couldn't put it down!

5 out of 5 stars Good Book, Easy Read.......2007-08-13

Very enjoyable read. He does not give you any great business insight, but it is an uplifting and encouraging story.

5 out of 5 stars Amusing, Inspiring, Educational and Brilliant!.......2007-07-25

This is a sensational book. Most autobiographies are boring and so full of only positive stuff about the person that you just know you are not getting the full picture. In this book Branson openly admits mistakes and bad business decisions. He gives credit to others acknowledging Virgin's success would not have happened without them. He also included instances when he has been brought back down to earth for example when two tourists asked for a picture he thought that he was being nice and started posing for them until he saw their confused faces and realised they wanted him to take a picture of them.

This book tells the reader everything about the Virgin empire from the first issue of Student magazine in 1968 to approval for their trains thirty years later in 1998. Obviously a lot more has happened since 98 such as Virginblue in Australia but we will have to wait for the sequel for that. This is a brilliant book which is as enjoyable as the great financial fictional thrillers like Harry Bingham's classic the Money Makers. This is so mush more inspiring when you realise Branson is not a fictional character and these achievements are real. This book will inspire you to get out there and make money. Buy it!

Note - There is an updated version of this book to be released soon which will have the post 98 stuff in it.

5 out of 5 stars What a great book!!.......2007-10-01

I was at my wits end with my 17 year-old daughter. She was acting up quite a bit and my normal reaction was anger which resulted in nothing but a lot of yelling, hurt feelings, and sleepless nights. Out of desperation, I searched for something, ANYTHING, that would help me get back on track with my daughter. This book was a God-send! I couldn't put it down. Dr. Bradley's philosophies and advice were right on target. I felt that he wrote it just for me. I applied his suggestions and what a difference it has made in my relationship with my daughter. Instead of yelling, we talk calmly. I listen, she listens. She still acts up once in awhile (after all, she's still a teenager) but I handle my reactions differently which makes her more comfortable coming to me with her problems. I sleep much better at night now. Dr. Bradley has given me so much hope that my sweet little girl is still there and we will get through these very trying times. I wish that all parents of teenagers could read this book. It is THE best.

5 out of 5 stars I agree...our teens are crazy...but it is explainable!.......2007-09-23

This is one of the best books I have found to help parents understand not only what their teens are going through, but tips on responding and hope that this is only a "stage" of development...this too shall pass! As a Marriage & Family therapist, I work with many teens and their parents...I all but insist that the parents buy this book! I tell them that it is the "handbook" for parenting a teen! So many have thanked me...it becomes their guidebook through adolescence! I should receive royalties...or at least some kind of commission, don't you think?

Thanks so much for writing this book and in such an easy to read format! My only wish is that it had been available when my son was a teen!

5 out of 5 stars Must-Read for all parents of teens!.......2007-08-30

I've read many parenting books, and most of them have offered excellent advice; but if you only read one parenting book in all your parenting years, this is the book to read. My husband is a youth pastor and I meet regularly with mothers of teens (we call ourselves MOTs). Together we've recommended this book more times than I can count and have purchased several copies to ensure that we always have one on hand to lend to a parents in need.

5 out of 5 stars Just plain useful.......2007-06-10

I don't know if the last reviewer actually read this book. I didn't see a place in the book where parents were not held accountable for their own behavior or teens were "blamed" for much of anything. It is not a textbook on how families can function when any member is psychotic, or criminally insane, or violent, or sexually abusive. But for the vast majority of us imperfect parents who have good but imperfect kids in transition from childhood to adulthood, this book offers quite a bit of advice, that I for one, have found very helpful. I've given it to quite a few friends too, all of whom have enjoyed it.

The author calls teens "crazy" because that has been the hue and cry of many a parent. What he is saying is hyperbole, a tongue-in-cheek overstatement regarding what is known about adolescent brain development: only that it is incomplete in the teen-age years.

1 out of 5 stars Pabulum for Grownups.......2007-04-12

If you're an insecure enough parent that you need Michael Bradley to tell you the whole
family problem is that just that "your teen is crazy" so that you can evade facing your own
issues, this book is for you. I worked with children, teens, and parents for 10 years
(directly in their homes on a daily basis; not, like Bradley, by seeing them in my office
once in a while), and I can tell you there are a lot more crazy grownups out there than
crazy teens. In fact, teenagers get along with their parents a lot better than parents get
along with EACH OTHER (proof: our 60% divorce rate). Last year, California law
enforcement offices responded to nearly 200,000 domestic violence cases, the vast
majority involving adults over age 30.

If Bradley can't summon empathy for the several hundred thousand children and youths
who are confirmed as violently or sexually abused by the parents every year, the several
million who live with alcoholic or addicted parents, and the tens of millions who suffer
severe family conflicts before and after their parents' separation and divorce, he needs to
get out of his comfortable office, toss his arrogant theories in the trash, and take a hard
look at the real world.

I looked up the terrifying teen statistics Bradley presents, and EVERY ONE OF THEM
IS OUTRAGEOUSLY WRONG. He (or whoever he copied) just multiplied numbers of
gun deaths, drunken driving wrecks, suicides, etc. shown by the National Center for
Health Statistics by 400% or 500% and stuck them in his book. The rest is no more
accurate. In particular, Bradley fails to mention the real statistics: ages 35-54 (the parents)
now have soaring violent death rates far above those of high schoolers. A teenager is
twice as likely to have a parent get into a drunken accident, three times more likely to
suffer a parent who commits suicide, 10 times more likely to have a parent die from an
illicit-drug overdose than the other way around. Bradley can't seem to see this--and he
incessantly trashes teens as "crazy"?

Reading this book was like listening to stereotypical seventh-grade alphas ridiculing the
"retards." Bradley's name-calling is so obsessive--he berates teenagers as "crazy,"
"stupid," "nuts," and brain-damaged in frenzied repetition on nearly every page--that it's
pathological. He sounds confident and tough, but this book is ultra-permissive when it
comes to ignoring the rotten adult behaviors that underlie rotten teenage behaviors.

Having said this, I respect and admire good parents. Good parents know they're not the
blameless victims Bradley excuses and that conflicts with teens are nearly always a
two-way street. Parents who need help maturely seek it from therapists who will hold all
parties accountable, not just encourage them to dismiss every problem with their
teenagers as caused by their "large, brain-dysfunctioned children." It's no accident that
arrogant, tough-sounding books like this are popular in a time when grownup
misbehaviors and disarray are skyrocketing and kids are dealing with more troubled
families than ever. After reading authors like this, I wonder if the never-mentioned side of
"brain science"--the deterioration in key memory and learning genes and loss of cells that
accelerates after age 40--is causing the real craziness we should be worried about.

Book Description

Losing has never felt better than with Jillian Michaels, the female fitness guru on Network Nine's hit show The Biggest Loser, who presents a unique and comprehensive health and fitness program that will keep the pounds off for good.

Jillian Michaels knows a thing or two about getting people to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. In her new book, Winning by Losing, Jillian offers a comprehensive and integrated program that provides readers with a clear–cut path to total health. Unlike other popular diet books, Winning by Losing works from the inside out, combining a behavioral makeover with a unique diet plan and a no–gimmick workout.

The book is divided into three parts: "Self," "Science," and "Sweat." "Self" focuses on behavior patterns, and shows how unchecked urges and emotional roadblocks lead to unhealthy eating habits. Jillian will help readers address and overcome these issues completely, an accomplishment that is the first and most crucial step towards leading a healthier lifestyle. "Science" is the book's nutritional facet, in which Jillian teaches readers how to create their own personalized diets. This section will help readers identify their own unique biochemical and metabolic needs, arming them with the knowledge they need to formulate a diet plan far more effective than generic ones offered in other books. "Sweat" utilizes Jillian's expertise to give readers an integrated workout program that combines the most effective elements of different training styles. It doesn't promise to be easy – but it works and lasts.

While there are several recognizable men at the top of the fitness guru chain, including Bill Phillips and Jorge Cruise, this category has yet to see a new female occupy the spotlight. Jillian Michaels is attractive, knowledgeable, and dynamic, and is the perfect candidate to be the next big thing in fitness/health books.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-10-10

First off I'm a big fan of Jillian Michaels. I love her on the Biggest Loser, and find her "tough love' style incredibly motivating. This book is just great. It cuts through all of the BS of fad diets, and does a great job of helping you determine exactly how and what you should be eating for great results. She combines science in her method which helps the reader to completely understand his/her body, and what, why, and how someone gains/loses weight. I'm a student pursuing a degree in Dietetics and kinesiology, and this book reinforces what I'm learning throughout my education. I've had a weight problem my whole life, and recently ( 2 years ago) have lost and maintained a loss of 65 pounds. I am battling those last 10 pounds, and I feel that this book will really help me get to my ultimate goal. Whether you have 200 or 20 pounds to lose, this book, with its startling facts and figures, will help you reach your goal!

Problems and solutions. She explains things so simply. You either do or don't. It's really like she's talking directly to you. So easy and user friendly. She really knows her stuff. First health & nutrition, what works what doesn't. Then exercise and exactly how to do each and every one (with pictures) whether at home or when you get to the gym, so you look like you know what you're doing. As the title indicates, Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours is a book with a friendly, lighthearted approach. Author Kevin Leman (The New Birth Order Book) speaks directly from his experiences as a father of five and a practicing psychologist. While you won't find specific studies or statistics here, you will find straightforward, practical suggestions that often get right to the heart of troubling situations.

Leman's technique, which he refers to as "reality discipline" is based on a particular passage from the Bible, and his book is liberally sprinkled with his religious beliefs. These references will make this book a particular favorite for some readers; his stance that parents' authority comes directly from God is a fundamental principle of his text, and some parents may prefer a less evangelistic approach. That said, it's hard to disagree with suggestions such as "train yourself to be a good listener" and "give your children direct eye contact." Nearly every suggestion is coupled with a real-life example of the behavior in discussion, making for an easy read, and every chapter ends with questions labeled "to review and apply" as well as a short section of concepts to put into practice. The section dealing with divorce suggests you make a list of the chapter's suggestions you find difficult and create a plan to implement them. Leman assumes that anyone reading this book can find the time to create such plans themselves, and doesn't provide his readers with any step-by-step charts. If you're not up to creating your own action plans, you may prefer a more detailed form of help than this book offers. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

Raising children these days can be daunting. But if anyone understands why children behave the way they do, it's Dr. Kevin Leman. Equipping parents with seven principles of Reality Discipline--a loving no-nonsense parenting approach that really works--this internationally known psychologist, author, and father of five shows parents how to: understand why children misbehave and what to do about it; foil finicky eaters, turn off temper tantrums, and minimize sibling rivalries; set suitable allowances, curfews, and privileges; and much more. Real-life examples, questions at the end of each chapter, and a discussion guide for individual or group use make this book an engaging read for parents, teachers, and child care providers. With over a million copies in print, readers can't go wrong with this classic and continual best-seller-now in a fun, new package.

5 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK ON RAISING KIDS.......2007-07-16

I ONLY WISH I HAD HAD THIS BOOK WHEN I WAS RAISING MY OWN CHILDREN. I READ THIS BOOK AND BAUGHT ONE FOR EACH OF MY CHILDREN. THEY TOO THOUGHT IT WAS THE BEST BOOK THEY HAD READ. I RECENTLY BAUGHT IT FOR A FRIEND WHO WAS HAVING GREAT DIFFICULTY WITH HER TWO OLDER KIDS, AND SHE TOO FOUND IT TO BE VERY HELPFUL. LIFE IS REALITY, WHY NOT HELP YOUR CHILDREN UNDERSTAND THAT FROM THE BEGINNING.

1 out of 5 stars Ugh! Not my Cup of Tea.......2007-05-13

Call it buyer negligence if you choose but for some reason, I really thought this book would give tried and true methods to help me with my child. Instead, I get bible passages and references back to the previous bible quotation. I don't need bible thumping. I was looking for advice.

5 out of 5 stars This book affirmed my instincts about parenting.......2007-05-12

My instincts for raising my 2 1/2 year old son have always been to apply loving discipline. However in moments of doubt I would take on an authoritarian approach. As a result, I was completely inconsistent. Those inconsistencies were obvious to my son and he responded accordingly. I now feel informed and affirmed about how to guide my son in learning to accept the realities of life. My son's behavior immediately changed once I consistently applied the principals discussed in this book.

5 out of 5 stars ONe of the best books on Parenting.......2007-05-04

I read this book years ago when my girls were small. Now I have bought it for my daughter and some other friends with small children.
The book is about choices. We all make choices and learning there are consequences for our choices. Kevin is a great writing and very easy to read. He has a great sense of humor.

3 out of 5 stars Preachy and Too Simplistic.......2007-04-15

The overall strategies in this book have some clout, but the overwhelming religious preaching is a nuisance at best. Leman assumes everyone is religious and everyone who is religious is Christian. Constantly quoting the New Testament as if it were a Christian Bible class is a huge turn off in this book. Not to mention his blanket approval of spanking as long as you say you love them afterwards....
I like many of his approaches but his way is only one way and I found he speaks as the ultimate authority leaving very little room for the many children that are not "cured" by his theories.
I found he speaks much more about God than he did about sibling rivalry a huge issue in many homes, and probably expects you to buy his book specifically about that.
