4 out of 5 stars Very Soothing Voice and Music.......2007-06-11

I would have to disagree with Karen K who said the voice and music were irratating. I found the narrators' voice to be extremely soothing and the music to be beneficial and relaxing. In fact, for all the hypnosis tapes I've ever used, this is by far the most relaxing. I'm able to go into an extremely deep trance and always come out with the suggestion at the end (that's how I know I didn't just fall asleep). I only gave it 4 stars so far, but will update it in a couple of weeks when I see how well it works. I've been using it twice a day for two days, today is the third, and haven't seen any changes in my appetite or eating yet. It says to use it for 21 days. I don't know if that means you'll only see significant results after 21 days, or what, but I'll keep this review updated to let you know if I've lost any weight. If not, then at least I have had some incredibly relaxing sessions while I'm listening to the tape.

Day Five: I found when I went to the market I chose only healthy foods and stayed away from the junk food without even thinking about it. I checked the fat content on all food even if it said "light" or "low fat." When I saw chocolate and thought I'd like some it was immediately followed up with the thought that I didn't want to buy it. The hardest part is getting out of the store without the junk in the cart. At home, I've noticed I have not wanted to eat between meals.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-01-28

After having so much success with Trevor's cd "Your Power Within" I had to try "Relax Your Way to Thin." I've lost 17 pounds so far and it is fantastic! I've never wanted to say I'm on a "diet" and I didn't really want to change my eating habits. But, after listening to the cd, my whole attitude about food and healty eating habits started changing. It made me realize that I wasn't denying myself anything by eating healthier, I was actually giving myself more. The weight started coming off, I'm feeling great and I'm sleeping soundly. Awesome CD, I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to loose weight.

2 out of 5 stars Didnt work.......2007-01-12

This didnt work for me. Maybe because everytime I turned it on I fell asleep. Good way to fall asleep if you are having trouble. Bad way to lose weight.

5 out of 5 stars Very impressed!!.......2006-11-06

I had gone to a Hypnotherapist before to lose weight and did not have much luck. However, I decided to try Trevor's method...and it works!! My eating habits changed dramatically after only listening to the cd twice. It is the most relaxing experience I have ever had. This cd allows you to fall asleep, so I listen to it while I am going to bed. It says that even if you do fall asleep your sibconcious will receive the messages that Trevor sends, without a doubt, it does! I am really amazed by this cd! I am getting ready to order his cd's for exercise and to quit smoking.

Thank you Trevor!!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Changes!.......2005-08-04

This is an amazing CD with incredible results! I have always had weight problems, tried all the fad diets and always gained the weight back. Trevor has a soothing, reassuring and relaxing voice that has helped me to really start losing the weight. I have never looked or felt better, and I'm keeping the pounds off. This program has truly changed my life and I owe it all to Trevor. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE hockey book!!!.......2006-03-07

I've owned this book for over 20 years, and I still pick it up from time to time to read it . .it is honestly that interesting and compelling. In no way would I consider myself as being a New York Ranger fan whatsoever. That being said, when I had finished reading this book, I found myself at times actually rooting for the Rangers in the playoffs based on the writing skill of "Ratso" Sloman. It is that good. If you can only read one hockey book in your lifetime, read this one.

5 out of 5 stars Thin Ice is a must read !.......2002-12-17

It's absolutely asinine that this book was not among "The Top 100 Sports Books Of All Time" compiled by the staff of Sports Illustrated Magazine. It is a must read, you do not need to be a hockey or sports fan to enjoy this read, it is the "Ball Four" of hockey books. Don't miss it, if you can find it !

5 out of 5 stars "Ratso" and the Manhatten Rangers !.......2001-03-13

Although I'm not a NY Ranger's fan by any stretch of the imagination, this book is a long forgotten classic and a must read for every hockey fan. "Ratso", (Larry Sloman) did a great job in profiling the NY Ranger players on and off the ice and he is able to insinuate, instances of sexcapades and drug use among the players and still protect their privacy, he takes us behind the scenes of the Manhatten party life with celebrities, models and hockey players. I was able to find this book in an old inner city library sometime in the late 70's, early 80's. The chance of you finding it now are slim and nil, but if you do get a hold of it, I'm sure you'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Hmm ... Interesting.......1999-04-03

As JHRay has already mentioned ... it's funny how rbettendorf could review this book and find such information as: personal bios of Mark Messier, Brian Leetch, and Mike Richter as well as the rangers winning the Stanley Cup in 1994.

This book was published in 1981. Mess was in Edmonton and Richter and Leetch were still in high school my friend.

5 out of 5 stars Prior review of a different book.......1999-01-25

On the off chance that anyone else is searching for this book, the other review posted is not a review of Sloman's book. As you can see, this book was published in 1982, years before the cup win in '94...

Sloman's book is about the late 70's and early 80's. He is friends with several Rangers, and writes about his experiences with them.

For a SERIOUS hockey fan, a great book. For a casual fan, probably a pass.

BTW, Sloman has been on Howard Sterns show many times.

4 out of 5 stars Steamy ice skating tale.......2005-12-07

Ice queen Sasha feels a responsibility for her ex-pairs partner Lon, who has spent the last five years in prison for trafficking heroin while on tour. While he was in prison, she went on to single glory, winning an Olympic silver medal. She vouches for him and gets him a slot on her latest ice tour when he is paroled.

Mick is an undercover DEA agent assigned to be the tour manager. Several drug-related deaths have coincided with the ice tour and the 17 kilos of heroin that Lon was supposed to have in his possession never materialized. All suspicion points to Sasha, as he puts her under close surveillance, while trying to resist falling for her, while investigating the rest of the folks on the ice tour, and all the recent mishaps and accidents that have befallen Sasha. Sasha is not the most trusting; an unhappy childhood, then betrayal from Lon have been hard to forget. Will she be able to forgive Mick when she finds out about his deception?

The true pusher is identified early in the story, and attempts to bring Lon back into the fold. Andersen does a great job of keeping you glued to the story to find out the conclusion, as well as to see justice served. The two lead characters have immense chemistry and some pretty steamy encounters.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read, but Susan's written better!.......2003-10-12

This story is good, the plot moves along smoothly, but Susan Anderson has written more exciting stories. I wasn't so much disappointed as I was a little "at a loss". I kept expecting that little "zing" from the characters as the story eveolved and this story just didn't do it.

5 out of 5 stars [AuthorZone] Book Review.......2003-07-19

Olympic silver medallist, Sasha Miller, is the darling of the figure skating world. Even the drug scandal associated with her former partner, Lon Morrison, hasn't diluted her popularity or prevented her star from rising to fabled, glorious heights. Oh, her professional reputation has been tarnished by the whispers and innuendos, but Sasha has managed to rise above it all to embrace her childhood dream. Her provocative routines heat up the ice, and defy the conventional expectations of a figure skater: Sasha has a passion for skating, and it shows -- in every shimmy, shake and gracefully executed jump.

No one would suspect the saintly Sasha of trafficking in drugs, however. No one, that is, except Special Agent Mick Vinicor of the DEA. Someone in "Follies on Ice," the touring show Sasha is a star attraction of, is selling high grade cocaine to junkies (and killing them with the drug's potency), and it's Mick's job to find out who's doin' the selling and then bust their sorry hump. This isn't his idea of an ideal undercover operation, though. Infiltrating the namby-pamby world of figure skaters is giving him the chills, in fact, and thoroughly testing his patience. Miller has gotta be as guilty as sin, but Mick is beginning to question his own judgment.

Sure, lusting after his number one suspect is stone-cold stupid, but his gut is trying to tell him that Sasha is innocent...and the intended target of a would-be killer on the prowl.

Conflicting loyalties and misplaced trust put Sasha and Mick on the warpath (once Mick's not-so-tiny white lies are exposed for what they are). On Thin Ice has reams and reams of thick, sexual tension to entertain a reader, however, and to compensate for this frustrating failure to communicate. Susan Andersen's Avon romances are by and large lighter, fluffier fare than this dark, somewhat plodding plot of romantic suspense. Night and day style wise, there are still certain commonalities to be found in this middling-to-high octane story: mainly, the spectacular chemistry percolating between Ms. Andersen's hero and heroine.

Why, the sensuality level is pea soup thick, and steamy enough to fog melted glass! There's no questioning Mick and Sasha's compatibility as a couple, but there are a few lamentations to be uttered regarding the lack of honesty in their relationship (and the high-handed, alpha male posturing of a vulnerable hero striking out in a knee-jerk reactionary manner). I really can't deny my infatuation with Mick, however, or the appeal of his politically incorrect take-charge attitude. Sasha has plenty of spunk and spirit to combat Mick's free-roaming egotism -- or should that be despotism? -- at any rate. Strain will test the strength of her emotional reserves, however, and create an illusion of fragility, further inciting Mick's protective instincts.

On Thin Ice has a thinly stretched suspense subplot that will easily crack under pressure, though, so it's best not to test or tamper with Ms. Andersen's premise. Nimble pacing of the storyline, spectacular sexual sparks, and complex, likeable characterizations make this novel a showstopper, if not an out and out heart stopper.

I loved this book! I think it is a re-release. This one is on my keeper shelf.

I love the fact that she makes him grovel, and that when he does something wrong that she calls him on it.

The killer was pretty obvious, it had an o.k. storyline. I loved the chemistry between the main 2. Definately a romance, if you like this book, I highly recommend Obsessed and Shadow Dance. They were great. Also, you would probably like Helen Myers and Lisa Jackson books. Also Erica Spindler is really good. And always, Nora Roberts and Mariah Stewart!

If you want more mystery and less romance, I would try Robin Burcell, and Iris Johanson.

Book Description

“One of the best books yet published on climate change . . . The best compact history of the science of global warming I have read.”—Bill McKibben, The New York Review of Books

The world’s premier climatologist, Lonnie Thompson has been risking his career and life on the highest and most remote ice caps along the equator, in search of clues to the history of climate change. His most innovative work has taken place on these mountain glaciers, where he collects ice cores that provide detailed information about climate history, reaching back 750,000 years. To gather significant data Thompson has spent more time in the death zone—the environment above eighteen thousand feet—than any man who has ever lived.

Scientist and expert climber Mark Bowen joined Thompson’s crew on several expeditions; his exciting and brilliantly detailed narrative takes the reader deep inside retreating glaciers from China, across South America, and to Africa to unravel the mysteries of climate. Most important, we learn what Thompson’s hard-won data reveals about global warming, the past, and the earth’s probable future.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of recent climate science.......2007-06-09

This is an excellent book on climate change, and in particular the less seldom discussed evidence for climate change in the tropics. It will give readers a first hand account of not only the process of scientific thought but also some of the personalities and egos that are involved in cutting edge research. Lonnie Thompson is the rare scientist dedicated to a quest for the truth who is not driven by his resume. His unique mode of operation is one many scientists could learn from. The book is also full of high adventure and documents the sacrifices that are made in search of scientific data. A true adventure story. The writing style with long sentences takes some getting used to but it is still clearly written.

4 out of 5 stars climate science isn't boring!.......2006-11-10

Thin Ice by Mark Bowen is a great story, well told. The book captures the excitement of experimental climate science and the extremely hard work that it entails. Anyone who likes books about scientific endeavors will enjoy this book. After reading it I understood the arguments about climate change much better than I used to. Unfortunately, the bottom line is pretty grim. The author is both a scientist and an alpine climber. Climbers take the loss of the glaciers very personally, and this book, while not being weepy or overly political, imparts the message that humans urgently need to confront the issue of climate change.

5 out of 5 stars Climate science + mountaineering + more = Superb book!.......2006-08-19

This is one of the best books I've picked up in years. Mark Bowen has produced a landmark piece of work. It's both extremely informative as well as being very readable.

The story centers on ice cores pulled up over the last 25+ years from the fast-disappearing glaciers on the tops of the world's highest mountains -- a grand adventure in itself -- with the results being put in the context of the current science of the greenhouse effect and global warming, the possible environmental collapse of numerous ancient civilizations (since the ice core records go back many thousands of years), with just enough on the politics of controlling carbon dioxide emissions and the way scientific research is done to keep things interesting and real.

As someone who tries to keep up with scientific developments -- as difficult as that is with the major news media being myopically focused on sensationalism and celebrity (right now it's the JonBenet Ramsey rerun...) -- I felt like I was being caught up on all the many important details and various threads of a story that I already sorta knew the larger outline and implications of.

If I had one complaint it was that the book seemed to need many more graphs than the single one it contains. Some of the subject matter is just technical enough that this would have been much better than the several paragraphs of carefully constructed words needed to convey the same idea. I suppose publishers think that it'll scare off too many customers if they see graphs in a book.

Highly recommended and deserving of much more attention than it's received (based partly on the paltry number of reviews here). Buy a copy for yourself and an additional one to give to a friend or colleague.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book - in several dimensions.......2006-02-25

This is travelogue, musings, science, story-telling, and a gentle (non-polemic) argument about a critical present-day issue. The previous reviewers (especially the first two) and Bill McKibben's dust-jacket comment are good guides. Some of the author's descriptions of mountain scenery are quite beautiful. Although I always have been concerned about climate change based on the "precautionary principle" and "responsibility to future generations" ideas, this book helped me put some meat on the thin bones of my understanding. It also reached me at an emotional level, since the reader spends so much time with the scientists and get a close-up view of how they arrive at their understandings.

The book does not simply follow a chronological narrative, but branches off for visits to related topics. I found this style of organization effective and fun. (Like a rafting trip in the Grand Canyon where you frequently stop for a day to explore side canyons.)

There are 24 pages of notes and 21 pages of (about 400-500) references.

5 out of 5 stars We are on Thin Ice.......2006-02-23

This book gets technical in the middle but it explains the politics and scientific mechanizations of Global Warming very well.If you are a creationist and still believe the world is flat, this book is not for you.Buy Ann Coulter's new book of fairy tales for your feelgood.
If you ever wondered or were confused by GW,get this book and it will explain it all.The question in the scientific community for a long time hasnt been IS the planet warming but WHY is our planet warming...to some this may come as a surprise as the obfuscation and political shroud of ignorance/lies has spun heavily for a long time actually denying that our planet is heating up at all OR it is some sort of natural cycle that will miracously reverse itself.....It wont.Glaciers and Ice that has been locked up for (in some instances) more than 300,000 years is now melting.Kilimanjaro in 5 years will be bald.Nothing but a big hill of dust.Glacier N.P. in ten years will have to be renamed, there will be no ice left.
The clock is ticking and if you think that this doesnt matter or wont affect you?If you are in the west and are familiar with lake powell, that lake will also dry up due to alot of seasonal snowmelt no longer being able to run down and replenish that lakes seasonal needs.
Every American concerned about the future of this country and the world should read this book and take it to heart because this is happening and it is real.If we do nothing about CO2 and Methane,it will destroy this world or to be more precise, destoy this world's ability to sustain human life.Already we are on track, with the amount of CO2 ALREADY in the air to reach CO2 and in 50 years, temp. levels of the pleistocene era.(When dinosaurs lived and died.)
We no longer have time for denial but if you want proof, read the book-it is written by a co-expedioneer who traveled with the scientific team that INVENTED the term Global Warming and produced most of the numbers and techniques for making theory fact.

5 out of 5 stars Danger, adventure, survival and romance!.......2007-08-14

I have read other T-FLAC novels but none on the Wright brothers when I picked up this story on sale the other day. Lily Munroe is a widow and veterinarian trying to hold onto her husband's ranch in spite of his leaving her in debt and being a womanizer among many other failings. Lily and her stepbrother Matt have hired a private investigator since she found a bank account in the Cayman Islands with a suspiciously large amount on deposit. Lily had known Sean and his partner in the ranch, Derek Wright, for over 6 years. She had even dated Derek first but then switched to the "safer" Sean. Unfortunately for Lily, she soon found out Sean was a womanizer but when she was ready to divorce him, Sean was diagnosed with terminal cancer and so for the next 3 years she took care of him.

Lily is a real outdoors woman and has been training dogs for the Iditarod race in Alaska for the last several years. The last couple years she has also trained dogs for Sean's partner Derek. Derek has even beat her at the race! Derek seems to be a rich playboy who flits around in his plane or jet wining and dining all different women so even though Lily feels strong physical attraction to Derek, she resolves not to become involved with him.

However, as the Iditarod begins and danger begins to surround Lily, she soon finds that Derek is more than the playboy she thought he was. Derek finds Lily is stronger than he thought and as he tries to protect her from the danger than surrounds him (and her, he realizes that she knew more about Sean's past than Derek had expected.

There is lots of danger and excitement as well as romance and some touching family scenes as well. I look forward to finding the other Wright brother books!

5 out of 5 stars a true romance.......2007-07-27

The best book in the Wright Brothers series with TFLAC cameos. The lead characters, Derek and Lily, truly match each other: they share the same love for nature and a genuine love for each other; their dialogues offer a window into their heart and give them dimensionality; this a truly tender love story, balanced with TFLAC action.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing end to the series.......2006-12-31

Derek Wright has been in love with Lily Monroe for 6 years. She was married to his best friend, that was a cheat, lier, and anything else you could think of. Lily had dated Derek, but because she felt so much heat for him she married his best friend instead because he would be safe for her.

Sean cheats on Lily on their honeymoon, and she decides that is it she is filing for a divorce. But when they return home Sean is diagnosed with cancer and she stays by his side until he dies.

Derek figures after Derek died he would have a chance with Lily, but she wants nothing to do with him, even though she is attracted to him.

They are both running in the Iditarod race in Alaska. Lily wants to stay out of Derek's way, but then things start happening to her and he decides to keep a close eye on her.

One thing leads to another and they become lovers, even though she doesn't want to. She tells him lets sleep together and get it over with so we can get on with the race. Yeah Right!

There are so many things in this book that are unbelievable I wondered why I even bothered to finish the series.

Making love in the back of a sled in below zero degrees. Get Real!

I am not ordering any more of Cherry Adair books. This series pretty much did it for me. The first two books were really good and then the last three were down right silly.

How the Wright men who were so handsome and stronge,& intelligent could fall for women that were as bright as a 20 watt light bulb I will never know. Guess they don't get out much.

You may like the book, and the series but I would suggest that you get them from a friend the library, anywhere, instead of paying the price for them, only KISS AND TELL & HIDE AND SEEK are worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging chapter of the Wright Brothers saga.......2006-10-09

Derek Wright is an undercover TFLAC agent dedicated to ridding the world of terrorism, one bad guy at a time. He moved to Montana to purchase a ranch and set up a front for his activities. When he first lays eyes on town vet Lily, he falls hard, and his best pal Sean, ever competitive, chases and wins Lily for himself, only to cheat on her from day one. Ready to serve him with divorce papers, Lily discovers that Sean is terminally ill and has six months to live - six months that turn into three long years. When Sean dies, Lily discovers that Sean was involved in a bull semen scam that could topple their ranch. She is not sure who was involved, including Derek. She is afraid of getting involved with a man like Derek... but Derek is persistent.

As Lily is preparing to race the annual Iditarod, a grueling 1100 mile race in the wilds of Alaska, she hopes to race sans Derek. No such luck, he won't leave their relationship to chance this time. As the two start the race, he discovers that a Serbian warlord has entered the US and might be planning an attack on US soil in Alaska. When Lily suddenly finds herself being shot at intentionally, Derek fears that his job has put her in danger. Could there be more than one bad guy out there?

Adair did her homework and it really shows, as the action in the wilds of Alaska make the reader feel like a part of the story - not just an observer. And unlike so many romance novels where the protagonists jump into bed immediately then declares their undying love, Adair deftly chose to drag the romance out, providing a more realistic spin on the relationship. It is an engaging saga in the Wright Brother series, managing to accomolish a rarity - improving on its predecessor.

5 out of 5 stars Adventurous and romantic story.......2006-09-26

This is my first book by Cherry Adair, and I have to say that it pleasantly surprised me! I didn't know what to expect with this writer, but now I'm definitely gonna try to get my hands on other books written by Ms Adair!

This story is full of adventure taking place in Montana and Alaska. There's a ton of action, romance, drama, suspense, and even a bit of comedy! At times, it can be a little hard for the squeamish, but it's definitely not gory like a horror story.

I recommend this book to anyone who is a romantic and has a penchant for action and thrillers!

      Book Description

The earth's polar regions have been the subject of three major research initiatives called "international polar years" (IPY). Beginning with the first IPY in 1882-1883, these initiatives have shared the goal of advancing basic scientific knowledge of the geography and geophysical processes of these remote lands and oceans. International polar year events have always captured the imagination of the public, yet the polar regions remain a distant and disconnected realm for most people. The global science community is set to begin another IPY in 2007-2008 with a special sense of urgency: simply put, the polar regions are a critical part of the earth's climate system, which is now undergoing rapid change in response to human activities. The 2007-2008 events will extend beyond basic studies in the geophysical and biological sciences to focus on global climate change and the research presently underway to advance our understanding of the human dimensions of a shifting Arctic environment.

Climate change is a pressing and much debated phenomenon of our time. Thin Ice accompanies an important exhibition, opening on January 20, 2007 at the Hood Museum of Art, that is one of the first to explore the human dimensions of climate change in the Inuit concept and perception of the Arctic climate as part of their culture. The exhibition presents objects from the Hood's permanent collection--boat miniatures, harpoons, masks, clothing, prints, and canoes, along with photographs--that are deeply embedded in the social and spiritual fabric of Inuit society while addressing the global debate around climate change. The Hood Museum of Art has partnered with the John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding and the Institute of Arctic Studies in the development of what will be the first comprehensive exhibition of Dartmouth's Arctic collections and this accompanying catalogue.

The exhibition is curated by A. Nicole Stuckenberger, Stefansson Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Arctic Studies, Dickey Center for International Understanding, Dartmouth College, as part of International Polar Year. At every stage of the exhibition and catalogue project, the Hood Museum of Art, the Institute of Arctic Studies, and Dr. Stuckenberger received support from William Fitzhugh, Director of the Arctic Studies Center, Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Igor Krupnik, Curator of Circumpolar Ethnology at the Arctic Studies Center, Kenneth S. Yalowitz, director of the Dickey Center and Ross A. Virginia, head of the Institute and Professor of Environmental Studies, who generously supported the exhibition and catalogue throughout this project. Ross Virginia has spearheaded the programs and conferences at the College in relation to the International Polar Year and is overseeing Dartmouth's role in hosting the international gathering for Arctic Science Summit Week in March 2007.

      Book Description

Bex Levy has seen her share of skating stars. But thirteen-year-old Jeremy Hunt may be the best of the best, with his winning smile, flawless technique, and more talent than most skaters twice his age. So, when his strangely protective father refuses to allow him to go to Nationals, and the two vanish, Bex knows there's a better story off the ice than on.

5 out of 5 stars Light and Interesting Read.......2007-06-07

I liked the first book of the ice skating series and this second book didn't disappoint. While the mystery is pretty shallow and the identity of the murderer is pretty obvious immediately the book does have some twists and turns that I never saw coming. I like the character of Bex a lot, even if some of the choices she makes are reckless at best. I am looking foward to reading the next two books in the series.

4 out of 5 stars My Views On Thin Ice.......2006-06-29

It has a good plot-though sometimes it is hard to follow where the author is going with the story.Too much description of what he/she is wearing, furnishings of a place etc. All in all it is a fun book to read with a bit of humor entered here and there. This author does not use profanity in telling her story, which I am grateful for-I think that takes away from the fun of reading a good mystery.

4 out of 5 stars If the mystery were more mysterious, this would be 5 stars.......2005-03-07

I really enjoyed this book and plan to read more by the author. I learned a lot about the ice skating world (horrible and fascinating at the same time -- a world where the few men who skate are in such demand that the women will put up with just about anything to have them as a partner). The author is a good story teller and the book is a quick read (in one evening, probably staying up too late). There's a lot of New York style wit (snappy comebacks, sarcasm, self-deprecating humor, etc.) and a likeable main character: Bex Levy, who, for reasons known best to herself, works as a skating researcher for "24/7", an all-sports television network. Like the women who will put up with anything to have a skate partner, Bex seems to put up with a lot to have this job, including a jerk for a boss and a truly 24/7 job.

The plot involves a 13-year-old phenom, a boy whose skating talent is truly amazing. The only problem is that the boy's dad won't let him go to nationals. Well, the answer as to why is fairly obvious, which is probably why I didn't give this book 4 stars -- there's quite a bit that's easy for someone who reads a lot of mysteries to figure out. Bex goes to tape him skating to try to convince his father that he truly could medal at nationals, but when the father sees her taping, he pitches a fit and disappears with the boy. Bex -- an aggressive young woman -- goes looking for him, and before you know it, there's a woman connected to the boy who is found murdered. Bex continues to investigate, much to the annoyance of several people.

All in all, this book is a great way to spend a rainy Sunday, and you'll never watch ice skating with the same innocence again.

5 out of 5 stars Some additional info.......2005-02-08

The Antonia Wright character is based on a Real Woman, who was finally, belatedly, inducted into the Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1997. Her name was Mabel Fairbanks, and she DID break the "color barrier" in ice skating, not for herself, but for her many students. Anyone who wants to know more about her can start with this article:
      [...]

I love Alina Adams's Figure Skating mysteries...I was lucky enough to avoid the weird world of amateur competition by becoming a professional skater the minute I graduated from high school in 1957. But the worlds do have their similarities, and I felt like I'd come "home" while reading this novel. Ms. Adams has the personalities and politics down pat. The touches of humor ring true, too.

Mostly, though,I love the fact that Ms. Adams cares enough about Mabel's life story to create a fictional character based on her. IMO, everyone should know more about this remarkable woman.

5 out of 5 stars Another great ice skating mystery.......2004-12-17

Bex Levy is a figure-skating researcher for the 24/7 network. Toni calls and asks her to come do a segment on thirteen-year-old Jeremy Hunt. He may be the future of skating. Unfortunately his father is refusing to allow him to compete at Nationals.

First Bex has to convice her boss that this story is worth covering. To do so, Bex has to make some agreements and put her job on the line. Once Bex arrives, she agrees with Toni that he is great on the ice. Before she can do much filming or ask any questions, his father stops her. Then he and Jeremy disappear.

Bex thinks there is more to this story than just a father not wanting his son to compete. Then she decides to do a story on other skaters that appeared to be up and coming and then disappeared from skating.

She begins searching down these past skaters and interviewing them. Some are willing to be interviewed and others would rather not. When one of the skaters she recently interviewed is found brutally murdered, Bex realizes not all competition stops on the ice. She is afraid someone is willing to kill to get their hands on Jeremy for themselves.

Can she uncover the truth before anyone else becomes a victim?

Alina was once herself a figure-skating researcher and it shows in her story that she knows the business. It is very well written. I enjoy the characters and their interactions as well as the skating intertwined with the mystery.

The story is well crafted. There are plenty of suspects so that it is difficult to determine who is guilty before it is uncovered.

I also enjoyed her first book, but it isn't necessary to read it before this one. It is a series, but they can be read independently. I highly recommend this book, as well as Murder on Ice.

I had to read a book this summer and read this one. I did a book report. It has funny things in it. I liked the story about the gangs and pets best. I don't like reading but this was not boring.

5 out of 5 stars Just what the doctor ordered!.......2006-04-02

This book is filled with short stories that are very attention grabbing and full of "being a kid" action. The stories teach important lessons incorporating some of the values students have lost. Brian's book is very easy to read and with its intended design, the stories are condensed so to keep the attention of the reader. I believe the reading level is approximately middle school level. It is a wonderful teaching tool and the kids just love it. This can be read orally or individually. Thank you Brian for giving us such a valuable teaching tool!

      5 out of 5 stars Jake.......2005-12-04

      5 out of 5 stars Tom.......2005-12-03

This book was fun. Patrick does interesting things. He is funny. I like the stories.

4 out of 5 stars McNabb's on solid ground with On Thin Ice.......2005-12-01

Brian McNabb has given us a very satisfying group of stories, all about a normal boy growing up and making choices about who he wants for friends and about how he should conduct himself in his world of family and school and town. All the stories are told from the point of view of a young narrator between the ages of about 7 and 13. McNabb's talent comes in giving us an authentic voice. We hear a boy, not an adult pretending to be a boy. "Neckbreaker", though awkwardly titled, is my favorite of the stories. As it follows our hero over a period of several months, we see him gain insight into himself and others. It's a lovely rendition of an oft told tale. Much to McNabb's credit, he resists the urge to moralize. The stories are good as stories, they are enjoyable. Well done.

      Book Description

This unique volume contains twenty-eight fascinating life stories of people -- many of whom went on to become famous -- who grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The coming-of-age stories in Thin Ice relate a range of experiences both good and bad, including happy memories and heartwarming recollections but also personal traumas, intergenerational and racial conflicts, the strictures of religious belief and practice, the joys and sorrows of young romance, and more. Above and beyond the stories of the more notable personalities -- Jim Harrison, Roger Wilkins, John Hockenberry, President Gerald Ford, Betty Ford, Al Green, Paul Schrader, William Brashler -- the book as whole is chock-full of crisp, humorous, irreverent, and moving writing.

Reinder Van Til and Gordon Olson have excerpted half of the pieces from previous publications, while they directly solicited the other half from active writers specifically for this book. The earliest stories go back to the 1830s and 1850s, and the most recent are a cluster of contemporary pieces that describe coming of age in the Grand Rapids of the 1960s through the 1980s. Together they paint a multifaceted, impressionistic portrait of a century and a half in the fair city of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

All in all, Thin Ice is a nostalgic treasure for any Grand Rapidian and literary treasure for everyone.

      5 out of 5 stars Great stories-Great writing.......2007-07-27

I live in the Grand Rapids area, plus I am a high school English teacher, so my natural interest spurred the purchase of this book. At first, when I started reading, I chose stories by authors whose names I recognized. Then I realized that the stories were presented in chronological order, so I started from the beginning. No matter what order is chosen, every story is wonderful. They are all very different in style and feeling, but a sense of place shines through, as well as a sophistication that belies Grand Rapids' humble demeanor. These stories are universal, engaging and fun. I have read hundreds of short stories, and this collection truly stands out.
