Book Description

To celebrate their 30th anniversary, the band Rush embarked on their R30 world tour in the summer of 2004, playing 57 shows for more than half a million fans. Drummer Neil Peart traveled between shows on motorcycle, logging 21,000 miles through 19 countries on both sides of the Atlantic. Part behind-the-scenes memoir, part existential travelogue, this book chronicles Peart's journey in search of the perfect show, the perfect meal, the perfect road, and an elusive inner satisfaction that comes only with the recognition that the journey itself is the ultimate destination.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great read for Rush fans.......2007-09-28

Mom, when I grow up I want to be a musician - Well you know son, you can't do both.

I found it fun, informative, entertaining and reflexive. An excellent read for Rush fans that appreciate Neil's way to observe the world, his experiences and reflexions of being in 'the Limelight' while keeping his feet (and wheels) in the ground. He describes his job as "hitting things with sticks - big deal!" but since only mediocre men feel satisfied every day, keeps challenged to give the best show he can give. Fun anecdotes of how the band develops a strange relationship with fans through the years and how they recognize them and see them change, some others on how some fans can get disturbing. In any case, Neil is able to have a life among 'the mortals' and be recognized only occassionally during his motorcycle trips from city to city that he describes in ways that make you want to be in those places or appreciate those in which you've already been.

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff!!!.......2007-09-28

Neil is a great writer. The story is great, just a narrative of a trip? No, Neil takes you there. He paints such a vivid picture, you'll feel like you are riding shotgun! This goes for the whole series. I think for being such a private dude, it's a cool way for the guy to share feelings, thought and philosophies. I don't feel like he was looking for pity, just an outlet. These books just might make a Rush fan out of you too, I warned ya!

3 out of 5 stars Ah yes, another review by me. You're welcome........2007-09-16

Welcome to my wonderful second review ever. I have been practicing 2 to 3 hours a day on my reviewing skills. Drinking some protein shakes and eating lots of free range, organic, dolphin trained, tuna to bulk up.

Sadly, I haven't done any book reviews in my strenuous review regime. So, to get an idea on how to review a book, I read every single review for this book... Right...

I noticed two things. One, I agree with almost every review. The good and the bad. Ignore the stars my fellow reviewers give this book and just read a couple of good reviews and bad reviews and that's basically the book.

The second thing I noticed is something I thought every book reviewer should talk about but that not a single one did.

The book itself.

The books jacket has three very nice pictures on a nice glossy paper. There is also a nice little bit of writing inside the jacket about the book.

The actual cover of the book is of a grayish color with little raised ridges running down it. It also is an exact copy of the jacket itself. Well, if you replace all the colors with the grayish color. Get rid of the pictures. Take away a few lines of text and symbols. And they are EXACTLY the same.

Even though Amazon says this book weighs 1.4 lbs. I am going to have to go all out weatherman on this, and say it feels more like solid 1.8 lbs. More if you like reading on your back, holding the book over your head. I don't recommend reading it this way unless you have conditioned yourself for this task.

The font is easy to read but just a size too small for my tastes. But not a deal breaker. I can't help it if I am going blind and bald. It is very fine and precise with no smearing or runs of any sort in my copy. Although, there are some spelling errors here and there.

The paper is sturdy but not too thick. It has an off white, almost aged paper look to it. My hands are so calloused from my review training, that I cannot get a proper feel of the paper. I imagine it has a very slight rough texture to it though.

The book has a very understated musky odor. Only noticeable when I took a good honking sniff at close range. I could see this causing some discomfort to the sinuses if you were reading on your back, with the book over your head, and you passed out from the exertion. You might wake up with that smell in your nose which might be disconcerting.

At the beginning of every chapter is a little quote or joke. They are good sometimes. If you like to read a quick chapter before going to bed every night then you are out of luck with this here book. Unless you are some kind of freak speed reader. The chapters are sometimes quite long but lucky for you, they are broken up into subchapter type things.

Yeah, anyway, football is on and I hear my recliner calling me.

4 out of 5 stars Neil, you "USED" to be my favorite drummer..............2007-09-14

Now your my favorite writer.........

I just finished three of your four books, and have gained alot of inspiration and insight. I'm planning to do a similar journey of my own, on a bike just like yours, with a journal on hand, from Orange County to the tip of Argentina. I'm saving your last book as reading material for the journey. When I finish the book Neil, I'm going to send you a copy. In the meantime, if I ever see you in person, I will simply smile and walk away. Thanks for everything. Love Drew

3 out of 5 stars Fun read, but not mandatory for Rush fans.......2007-08-31

After reading all of Neil Peart's other travel books, I had a pretty good idea what to expect going into this book, and it neither disappointed nor surpassed my expectations. The title did seem to indicate that there would be more hard "Rush content" than his other books, but all told, I would estimate that about 20% of the book talks about the shows themselves, and the rest is devoted to Peart's travels between shows.

First a quick note about the tone of the book itself, since so many other reviews seem to hit on this. As with pretty much everything else he's ever written, Peart makes no bones about the fact that he isn't thrilled interacting with rabid fans. But he's also honest about the fact that he has a hard time talking to people in general, even going so far in this book to say that he thinks Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson are better friends to him than he has been to them. Pretty straightforward stuff. And to be fair, the negative interactions he describes here are with "fans" who can probably best described as nut-jobs. Even after reading this book, I still come away with the feeling that if I was ever to come across Neil, a simple "thanks for all the great music" would probably be met positively enough.

As for the content itself, the behind-the-scenes glimpses are great, as were Neil's views on Alex's legal battles, and his views on the State of Florida in general (no spoilers here, but it was pretty funny stuff). 400+ pages of motorcyle rides does get a bit tedious after a while though, and I found myself wishing that there was more technical info and anecdotes about the various concerts on the 2004 tour.

To an extent, this book does serve as a prelude to the "Snakes and Arrows" album, insofar as Neil describes in a bit more detail the various back-road church signs that inspired his work on that album. But are you missing anything from the album experience if you don't read the book? Probably not.

Overall, this was an enjoyable enough read, as it does provide some insight into the mind behind Rush's lyrics. But I wouldn't consider it as indispensible as "Travelling Music" is to describing the band's history.

5 out of 5 stars This really is the greatest book for beginners.......2007-09-06

You cant ask for anything more for a tool to learn how to play bass. If you get this book, you will not have to spend the money on lessons because it is that informative. If you are just starting out, or if you have been playing bass for a good little while, this is a great book to have in the library.

4 out of 5 stars Great reference and after 6 years, I keep going back to it.......2007-03-27

I've been playing bass for 6 years now and I've had this book with me the whole time. It is not meant to be read straight through and that is a good thing. I can jump around to parts that interest me at that time, and I realized recently that I've almost covered the whole book now as my interests and skills have changed. And the more experience I get and the more I learn, the more different parts of the book make sense and peak my interest. It has examples of almost every style of music from country to R&B and Rock to Salsa and Reggae. Which was nice to see how the different styles are done, but use the same bass-ic (pun intended) fundamentals. It helped me realize that even though I am a rock/alternative bassist, it's really not all that different than other styles and helps me appreciate not only other bass-lines but bass players, bands, and whole genres of music in general. I pick it up from time to time and still find new things and new ways of reading into it. Great reference for bassists of all levels.

The only negative thing I can really say is that some really experienced musicians may find little value in it, and the slap-bass part is really short. Other than that, its a great book and an easy read. I can start off reading about how a simple country bass-line goes, but end up reading 20 or more pages because it is well-written and keeps things light-hearted while still being very informative. You can learn a lot in a non-threatening way.

4 out of 5 stars Bass Guitar for Dummies.......2007-03-08

Patrick Pfeiffer's book Bass Guitar for Dummies is excellent not only for the novice but the expert as well. Patrick has taken the basic concepts of learning to play the BASS and made them easy to understand. The lessons are self paced and the instructional CD that accompanies the lessons really brings the notes on the page to life. This allows the reader the chance to actually hear and feel the rhythm of the written notes. I am really enjoying this book and learning how to play my BASS.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the New Bassist & Great Resource for the Experienced Bassist.......2007-02-19

I have been playing bass on and off for 35 years. The thought of buying a "Dummies" book seemed foolish, however, after looking the book over and reading reviews on a bass guitar player's forum, I decided to buy it. It has been an excellent resource. I refer to it on a regular basis. Don't let the name fool you. It's great if you are just picking up the bass or if you have played a long time and could use a good overall reference book. One reviewer complained about the walking, slap and pop instruction. If he wanted a book that focused on these techniques in depth, he should have purchased books that delve deep into these areas. I have found the sections on walking, slap and pop to be relevant and an excellent foundation in these areas.

5 out of 5 stars Bass Guitar For Dummies.......2007-02-16

Amazing, amazing, amazing!!! So thorough that after 20+ years of playing the bass, this book strengthened and fortified my bass playing.
Thank You, Mr. Pfeiffer!!!!!

3 out of 5 stars Couldn't get into it.......2007-05-13

I expected something different from this. I'll say up front that I'm a novice/hobbyist drummer. Having said that, the exercises here are just painful. I didn't find any particular rhythm to them, it just seemed to treat the drummer like a machine required to play right-hand, left-hand, right-foot, left-foot (assigned to no particular drum or cymbal/HH) at prescribed times. I'm impressed if you can do this, but it really helps me if the exercises sound like something in addition to building up skill.

4 out of 5 stars Good but can be better.......2007-05-07

This is a really good book to train your brain to control your hands and limbs to move separately. But it will be helpful if there's an audio CD that comes with it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Study!.......2007-05-07

This book holds many challenging exercises. You first look at some of them and think "It can't be that hard." Then you try them and it is not so easy. Definately a great way to challenge your coordination and make it stronger!

5 out of 5 stars Not really a review -- an explaination..........2007-01-10

Most reviews touch on what this book is about, I just want to add what you get
when you get it. Endless permutations of rhythms that break the
standard mold of a "normal" drummer. Forget snare on 2&4 or straight eights
on a hi-hat. The books seeks to break you down from the "normal" rhythms
of the kit and to enable you to hit linearly -- any joint at any time in any
order at any point on the kit.

But...

You don't need a drumset to work it -- all you need are hands and feet to
get better. the "score" is set out in various patterns of LH,RH, LF, RF
(left hand, right hand, left foot, right foot). So if you can't get
enough of drumming, take this on the road with you for vacations, work
trips, whatever and work on breaking the mold. The floor, your knees
and any flat surface in front of you will do for practice.

This is one of the few drum books you can literally practice from
anywhere at anytime with nothing but the book and you.

5 out of 5 stars 4 Way Jazz Independence: The Lost Art.......2006-10-04

Having a book like 4-Way Coordination will do nothing for you, unless of course you are willing to invest the time toward mastering each excercise contained within.

It would be impossible to speculate just how far you could go, but your playing will improve exponentially once you have mastered the incredible musicality this book offers!

To effectively and indelibly burn the contents of this book into your musical vocabulary, you would need to spend considerable time playing each bar at 35 mm on the metronome ad infinitum. Then take it up from there!

Rumour has it that this book was the main focus Tony Williams used to develope his incredible playing. Rumour also has it that Tony could effortlessly play each excercise at the highest metronome settings.

One could spend a lifetime working toward discovering every permutation and combination this book offers!

This book is a definite "must have!" Buy it now!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Can we Hit it and Quit it?.......2007-09-09

I've always wanted to understand how James Brown got that Funk sound. This book breaks it down for drums, bass, and guitar. It isolates each part so you can focus on finding the groove. The transcriptions are accurate, although some recordings may have variations depending on the player. The book also gives a brief history of the players behind the Godfather of Soul. Bootsy is a monster, and this book has his lines laid out for you. Worth it!

4 out of 5 stars How a Rhythm Section Works.......2007-05-04

Really a great book. Has a bit of interesting history about James Brown.

Really breaks down the interplay between drums, guitars, and bass on JB's band. Also provides some insight into the different bassists during JB's career. Finally, really provides a good description of the rhythmic interaction between the drummer and bassist.

If you want the FUNK - start here.

5 out of 5 stars Killer book for learning funk.......2007-04-11

As a guitarist, this book rules for expanding your chord base and learning new rhythms. The CD tracks are great to play along with on repeat until you nail 'em, and the historical text is a nice bonus. Quit dorking and buy this book, whether you are just beginning or an expert guitarist. It is a NO BRAINER!

5 out of 5 stars This book seriously kicks ass.......2007-03-31

Go no further, it's all broken down for you here: the history, the songs, individual tracks. This is a great learning tool and obviously a labor of love.

5 out of 5 stars Great Format.......2007-01-04

I really like the format of this book & cd. It covers bass, guitar and drums, with each track played separately on the CD and then all combined. Guitar & Bass are shown in both tab & standard notation. Very clear, and the individual parts aren't that hard to play. The magic is in the combination and rhythmic interaction. Learning to play these songs will be therapy for small groups locked in the same old bag.

Of course, there's only ONE JB, but I hope they make more "Rhythm Section" books like this one for other bands as well.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for learning independence.......2007-06-14

This book is designed with the jazz drummer in mind, but the exercises will help all players develop independence. The cymbal / hi-hat pattern is pretty consistent through the entire book book - the dotted 16th pattern that is common in be-bop. This means that the right hand is doing the same thing in pretty much every exercise, assuming you are right handed. Despite this, the exercises can be quite challenging, especially as the book progresses. To keep things interesting, alternate the sticking so that your non-dominant hand plays the cymbal pattern. The CDs are great and are helpful in understanding the trickier patterns. It's easy to see why this book is a standard among jazz drummers, but any drummer will benefit from mastering the patterns in this book.

JIM CHAPIN!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A classic book.......2005-09-25

This book helped shape the art of drumming, and continues to be a must-have for drummers. Chapin's book was used a favorite of Elvin, Tony, and tons of great drummers. This book isn't just for jazz drummers, though. Anyone looking to develop independence should check out this book. The independence it builds between the hands and feet is invaluable in any type of music that needs to groove. Even almost sixty years after its publication, this continues to be an amazing book.

5 out of 5 stars Best bebop practice book........2005-09-02

CDs make it very clear. It's better than Reed's Syncopation book in my opinion because you syncopate your bass drum foot in proper time with the hands. I still have a lot of work to do with it, so I gotta go!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-13

This book is fantastic sorce material for any intermediate drummer looking to begin exploring jazz. For experienced players the content can be quite challenging and the advice is imminently valuable. Really a spectacular educational resource.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for the Jazz Drummer.......2007-03-26

I'm simply going to reinforce what you may have heard elsewhere: this is as good a foundational text on jazz and bop drumming as you can find (along with Ed Soph's and Jim Chapin's books).

If you are interested in learning to PLAY jazz and bop on the drums, this book takes you from a level assuming some knowledge of the drum kit, little knowledge of jazz, and brings the two together in a very logical way.

I have milked four years (so far, many more to go) out of this book with regards to the density, depth and entertainment/interest-level of the material.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable, crucial, essential!!!.......2006-11-30

Like Jazz? Don't like Jazz? It doesn't matter. Whether you like to swing or not, this book WILL make you a better drummer and musician. The triplet feel is almost its own dimension in drumming and every drummer should master it. Although it is targeted for bebop jazz (basically faster swing feel as far as a drummer is concerned), this book will give you plenty of exercises and ideas you can incorporate in any genre. The exercises are great for independence and time-keeping, and offer very, very good fill and solo ideas.

As for aspiring jazz drummers, there is absolutely no question, GET this book. Any jazz professor at the university level would approve and it is used widely in music schools such as Berklee and Indiana University Music School (I graduated from IU).

The lessons on brushes are crucial and if you have never placed your hand on a brush, here is where you should start looking.

The accompanying CD is great as well and helps you to master a good swing time, listen to exercises being played, listen to compositions and play along tunes with a bassist or with a whole rhythm section.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Place to Start!.......2006-11-10

I bought this book after playing professional jazz gigs for 4 years. It is authentic and a great place to start for beginning to intermediate jazz drummers. The CD is a nice accompaniment.

5 out of 5 stars Grooves.......2006-06-22

This rather thin-in-size book packs a tremendous amount of practical instruction. It is intended as a thorough course in bop drumming for serious students, and will realistically take many months simply to work through at a basic level (and, as with any high-level skill, many years to actually master). It is suitable for beginning drummers who at least know the rudiments and basic technique (and who have familiarity with jazz in general), but would also be appropriate for experienced drummers wanting to learn the specifics of bop drumming. The book begins with basic time-keeping on the ride cymbal and progresses through comping and tailoring accompaniments. There is a detailed section on brushwork. While the focus naturally is on rhythm, there are also many useful pointers on tone, dynamics, composition and such. The accompanying CD is well put together and, in addition to including examples, also includes "music minus one" type tracks to play along with. The writing style is lucid and the explanations are clear. The author understands that playing drums is a lot of fun, and he seems to aim to provide a highly disciplined approach that manages to avoid taking the fun out of things -- no mean feat. This book is the next best thing to actual lessons with a great teacher.

Book Description

Voted second on Modern Drummer's list of 25 Greatest Drum Books in 1993, Progressive Steps to Syncopation for the Modern Drummer is one of the most versatile and practical works ever written for drums. Created exclusively to address syncopation, it has earned its place as a standard tool for teaching beginning drummers syncopation and strengthening reading skills. This book includes many accented eighths, dotted eighths and sixteenths, eighth-note triplets and sixteenth notes for extended solos. In addition, teachers can develop many of their own examples from it.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing.......2007-07-25

If you want to significantly improve your independence skills, buy this book and then find an instructor who can show you the more than 40 different ways to apply it to the drum set.

Alan Dawson used this book extensively with his students. Thankfully, one of his students has documented those 40+ ways. See "The Drummer's Complete Vocabulary As Taught by Alan Dawson" (Paperback), by author John Ramsay. Ramsay did a great job of identifying (and providing audio examples) of the numerous ways you can apply Syncopation.

An excellent precursor to this book is Jim Chapin's "Advanced Techniques for the Modern Drummer". That book will help you develop the basic independence you'll need to dive into Syncopation. Or if you already possess the ability to play the swing ostinato while playing swung eighth notes and triplets and sixteenth notes between your snare drum and bass drum, then you can likely dive right in.

Any drum teacher worth having will insist you buy this book. I bought this for my daughter who will be adding jazz drumming to her arsenal of rock drumming. This is one book all drummers should have

5 out of 5 stars All music students could benefit from this book........2007-01-16

I am currently using this book to teach my son basic drumming with a roland practice pad. It has been a fantastic help.

This book would be helpful to any beginning student learning to read music, not just drummers, since it so clearly breaks down rhythmic notation. The exercise progressions make a lot of sense, and there are quarter note guides that align the drum notes relative to the downbeat, which is very helpful for learning syncopation.

5 out of 5 stars If used properly, this book is a great asset!.......2006-02-25

I recommend this book for anyone interested in developing there reading and coordination skills for drumset. It also challenges you to use your imagination to adapt each page to your particular drumset needs.

Drum teachers worldwide use this book because its THE syncopation book.

Very usefull in order to improve jazz style after be-bop.

5 out of 5 stars great book...........2006-03-10

this book is a great learning tool from semi-pro to professional drummers that want to refine and improve their jazz and drumming skills. The audio cd that comes with the book offers great examples of the charts and exercises listed. It also lists other recommended listening and reading material. In my opinion, this is even better than the first book from John Riley. Anyone who buys this book will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars just what I wanted........2006-03-06

I am just about finished with Riley's other book, "The Art of Bop Drumming." I wasn't sure whether to move on into this book, or continue working on mastering the material in the first book. I decided to order "Beyond Bop Drumming" and I'm glad that I did. It addresses a number of things in more detail such as uptempo playing, and begins to get you into comping with your hi-hat foot.

5 out of 5 stars Riley does it again........2006-02-25

This is a great follow up to his "bop drumming" book. It helps expand your versatility on the drums by adding more comping that utilizes the hi hat as part of your comping figures. The section on "implied time" is amazing. A must have for drummers who want to become a truley "musical" drummer.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing - In Depth Study of Meter + Creativity.......2005-04-01

John Riley has scored once again. When I met him last year, I asked him about a tune he wrote called "Speed Bumps Ahead" which is in the book. All he said was "(long pause)but of course I did (long pause)." This describes the book alone. It is long, dark, deep and sophisticated, yet playful, while incorporating rhythmic challenges and creative ideas all at the same time. It is a drum education masterpiece. It is an advanced book, but John also has a lot to offer in terms of stylistic playing. From his versions of the tunes, one can learn so much from his sound alone. It is truly one of the best educational and music minus one books of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Tommy and Igoe way back........2007-05-19

This purchase was my second of this book & CD series, as I wore out the last CD. I also have, and use, the DVD available that accompanies this series. I purchased them somewhere between STICK CONTROL and Joe Porcaro's DRUM SET METHOD, and they're part of my routine now. I've only been playing for a little over 2 years, and nothing could replace the best teacher in Atlanta, JACK DUKES, but Jack was the one who showed me this Tommy Igoe course. It covers a little of everything and a lot of some of it, and it's helped me to progress at an accelerated pace and find the things I like most to play. The grooves, minus the drums, are long-playing, longer than some of the other practice CDs I've used that only have short sections. I was 51 when my husband bought me the drum set, so I have to learn fast.

5 out of 5 stars Great Item.......2007-03-24

Great resource for serious drummers. I found it a great resource to learn new beats and perfect the old ones. Nothing worse that having a drummer that only knows a few grooves.

I specially like the "world groove" section. I understand the chances of my band asking me to play a Mambo, Meregue, Salsa or Mozambique are slim, but I can use elements from these grooves elsewhere. Definitely recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for any level of player.......2007-01-16

This book is full of great beats for all levels. The CD has excellent tracks for developing feel with a band and leaves plenty of room for improv. I highly recommend this book for beginning players all the way to a pro that wants a chart reading challenge.

4 out of 5 stars Just Starting or Wanting to exel in Your Drumming Skills?.......2007-01-11

I would recommend this product but not by itself. You really need the DVD too, because the music is from the lessons but in full length. I'm diggin the variety of grooves and there's something for every drummer whether your just starting out or you think your ready to go on tour!

4 out of 5 stars Nice Practice Tool.......2007-01-10

I've been a drummer for about 20 years now and I found this CD/Book combo to be a very useful practice tool. It starts out providing basic rudiments, fills... which increase in complexity as you move through the book. The book and exercises end with 4 or 5 "charts" which you are required to follow in order to play along with the companion CD. These are not simple songs and the exercises are quite lengthy. The CD/book combo covers a variety of musical styles, tempos and groove. I recommend it for intermediate to advanced percussionists.

5 out of 5 stars Good Instruction.......2005-10-06

I practice spinning my sticks all the time, but it was good to see that someone put some organization and structure to it. I learned a lot from this book and dvd. I learned a few moves!

5 out of 5 stars Pleased.......2005-08-12

I really wanted to see if what I had learned long ago could be easily explained. To my surprise this book was right on target. Easy to follow, excellently demonstrated, and made quite simple. As in anything that looks easy...practice divides the can from the can't.

5 out of 5 stars Spinology for Spinologists.......2005-08-03

Great book.. even better DVD that comes with it! But be warned, the techniques are deceptively simple but hard to do and harder to master.;. but there's no book around like it so he's got a monopoly on the subject right now...
