3 out of 5 stars predictable read.......2007-06-09

After reading the Amish series by Beverly Lewis, I was excited to find a new series on the Amish culture. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with this particular book. The story of Rachel Beachy and Silas Swartley is simplistic in its style and predictable. While the central conflict is good, the story churns slowly around its characters and seems to be a better fit for a younger reader. What is most disappointing is its ending, which centers around the death of a young family member. This turn of events is treated superficially and takes away from the emotion of how a loving family would react in such a situation.
Perhaps other books in this series are better, and I am anxious to read another to see. I would not suggest this as an introduction to the series.

5 out of 5 stars Hope Chest (Brides of Lancaster County).......2007-05-20

Wanda Brunstetter writes very much in the same style as Beverly Lewis. Both know the Amish way of life and relay that to the reader in a refreshing style.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-12

Good book. A little slow through parts. Predictable as all of Wanda's books are but on you have a hard time putting down.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book.......2007-03-02

I really loved this book. I couldn't put it down. Everytime I would pick it up, I was mesmerized by the way it made me feel as if I was a character in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone that has a love for God and a yearning to learn more about the Amish.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice Book.......2007-03-01

I personally do not understand why there are bad reviews here. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it over a vacation in Florida. I thought it was refreshing and uplifting. The author writes so descriptively that it makes you see the scenes that you are reading. I thought it was a nice, simple book that was a welcome break from all the bad things that are thrown at us on a daily basis.

1 out of 5 stars NO STARS! REALLY........2006-09-14

Four Inspiring Novels my backside. I didn't have the option of no stars so I had to give it a 1. This book goes nowhere fast. They certainly are not INSPIRING!!! The writing is barely tolerable and the story lines are all so similar you wonder how this writer got published. I had to force myself to read them because I purchased this ill printed garbage. If you want to read good Amish fiction get one of Beverly Lewis' books, and leave Ms. Brunstetter's on the shelf.

2 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this book.............2005-11-14

but it was so poorly written, that I couldn't give it more than two stars........and the two stars I did give it were based mostly on the interest I have in the subject matter rather than the writing. I liked that the book was about the Amish, but found several of the characters so disagreeable that it was hard to get through those stories. I understand that Miriam was hurt and bitter, but she came across as slightly unhinged through the first part of the story. And, it made no sense that Amos would even want to marry her if she might be a bad influence on his daughter. What did he see in her, other than that she was upright and breathing? The same might be said for the character Laura. Other than being pretty, why would Eli love her? She was awful.
I liked Rachel and Rebekah well enough. That is what kept me reading. There were however instances where the wrong word was used to describe a mood or expression, and that made reading a bit awkward.
So, if you like the Amish, and if you can't find something else to read, purchase the book. Used. At a big discount. Otherwise pass on it.

2 out of 5 stars Needs improvement.......2005-07-03

I wish I could say I liked this book as much as the other reviewers, but frankly, I do not understand how they could give it five stars. 1. Above all, the characters in the book are not plausible... Their behavior is extremely inconsistent and unbelievable. 2. The author uses words that make the characters seem immature at times - For example, when someone says something with displeasure, the sentence often ends with "she hollered," "she whimpered", etc. Even if the protagonist is going through a growing experience, these words are ill-chosen and make the speaker seem like a child having a tantrum. 3. I understand when an attempt is made for the spoken dialogue itself to reflect country inflection/dialect, but although some authors have managed this in books I have read before, it just comes across as odd in the non-dialogue narration part here. I would keep it in the dialogue. (The constant dropping of "g" in "ing" words was annoying, for example. Without going back to examine them, this seemed more prevalent in the middle two of the four novels and I wonder what order the four books were actually written in.) 4. Young characters use expressions that only older people would use. I am not referring to the Amish, but to the English woman and her friends. The characters' speech and style of acting/dressing are inaccurate for supposedly cutting edge, modern 20-somethings. They date the author and the book. It was difficult to get through some of this because it was so implausible. 5. Aspects of the plot lines are stunningly similar. Two of the stories deal with women with bitterness - They both have their hearts transformed when the men they love find them at the scene of a buggy accident and rescue them. In fact, I think there was a buggy accident integral to the plot in each of the four stories. More originality would be welcome. 6. The author uses the word "cripple" an unbelievable amount of times in the story about the woman with paralyzed legs. I understand such phrasing being used when she is working through her own feelings of inadequacy, but this wasn't the only way it was used. I wonder if the author interviewed any real people who have gone through acceptance of a disability. I am not under the impression they appreciate paternalistic attitudes. We were obviously supposed to think the "crippled" girl was cute and sweet cuz she was so helpless, like the many times she had to be pushed around in her wheelchair and carried, but my impression of real people with disabilities is that they struggle against such ways of thinking and desire to be seen as capable - For example, I think a real person would be happy to go for a walk (self-consciously called a "wheelchair ride") in the garden with her suitor if she was pushing herself alongside him, but would likely only accept help if it were genuinely needed. I cringed at some of the phrasing and attitudes here.

The above unawareness of how "fancy" young people genuinely talk and of how people with disabilities might behave, as well as the other problems, made me also question how much firsthand knowledge she had of Amish ways of interacting - Would this really be how young people would interact when they are dating, such as the kissing, or is this just how she envisions it? Fixing some of the above problems in future books would lend better credibility that she had done her research.

5 out of 5 stars Brought me back to a time of lost beauty and quality sewing........1999-10-19

With Martha Pullen's research, this book is incredably historical to the time of the early 1900's. It is both beautiful and inspiring. As someone with experience in this type of sewing, I have found it to give me inspiration. It has been a springboard to design my own Christening and Blessing dresses in the heirloom style. I was taught these things at my own grandmother's knee and had forgotten the beauty of fine sewing. Sewing has gotten caught up in the hustle and bustle of how quickly it can be completed. These items do not show the lost art that demands that these items be passed on generation to generation as they were in the past. I hope to inspire others in my area to appreciate, even if only by observation, this precious and almost lost art when they see the results of my work as inspired by Martha's skills, enthusiasm, and requirement of quality.

5 out of 5 stars Big and Beautiful!!!.......1999-08-30

This book is amazing! It's nice enough to be a coffee table book, and it actually is useful! The accompanying patterns are easy to read. It isn't too helpful for beginners, but it sure gets them interested!!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book of heirloom sewing. All patterns included........1999-05-01

Martha has done a wonderful job of including beautiful heirloom sewing with all directions and patterns included. The pictures are breathtaking! This is not a good book for the beginner, however, - some heirloom sewing experience is necessary. But, its a great way to get inspired! And its HUGE!

THE PERFECT PRINCE CHARMING Restoring old paintings for Hope Springs' Historical Society isn't exactly what frustrated artist Cynda Madison wants from her career. And yet, she has no idea just how challenging her job will become when she begins work on the damaged portrait of handsome Prince Dimitri Karakov. Moved when she learns that he was tragically killed at The Chesterfield, Cynda decides to investigate his death. Then she finds the painting's tarnished nameplate in an old hope chest, and is instantly swept back in time to 1887, where she meets the prince himself--very much alive and disturbingly attractive. Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars a very good book.......2002-03-11

Well I read this book in one afternoon. I really enjoyed it. I am used to time travel books but most tend to go back to Midevil England or Scotland and go back many hundreds of years. This one goes back to 1887 America. Our heroine is a modern day woman who is cleaning and restorying a portrait of Dimitri Karakov, a Prince who was killed at the Chesterfield, a posh hotel now in ruins. She is strangly drawn to the Chesterfield and the painting. She can actually feel Dimitri's warm skin when she touches it. She is so facinated by the Chesterfield that when she goes there and finds a bent name plate that belongs to the painting she is transported back in time to the Chesterfield of old. She is greeted like they knew she was coming and she ends up meeting Dimitri. He is to be king someday and must fight his growing attraction for her. She is there she believes to save his life and keeps trying to warn him. He also must keep his feelings of jealously hidden. His brother Alexi is quite fond of Cynda and since he is the second son can marry whom he likes.

Cynda isfired after Dimitri makes a complaint and he is sorry to have caused her a loss decides to have him paint his portrait, the portrait. They spend many hours at it and become closer and closer. He loves her spirit and her soul and she loves to make him smile and see him at ease.

Together they must overcome thier stations in life and unseen dangers to be together. Along the way we encounter others that may have traveled through time as well. This is the third book in the series and I am going to go back and read the first two and then await the fourth.

5 out of 5 stars I don't care what the 3 star reviewer this is a great read.......2001-10-02

Maybe I really fell in love with this book because I have read the first 2 books in the hope chest series. But I really liked this a lot. I think how Dimitri acted when he was told that Cynda was from the future. He didn't believe her and he didn't want to hear stories about the future. That is realistic. If somebody came up to me and said they were from the future I wouldn't believe them either. This is a good book and is worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars Not too bad, but..........2001-09-18

Overall the book was a good read. However, there were two major faults in the story that really stuck out like a sore thumb. Number one - when Cynda finally tells Dimitri she is from the future, not only does he not believe her at all, he doesn't even ask any questions about it even if just to test her. Even when they become lovers and all the way up until she gets shot with the bullet meant for him, he never believes her and it is not talked about. Give me a break. Even after she gets shot and he finally admits he believes her, the future is not talked about. This shows that the author has left out one huge factor of a human personality - curiosity, especially about something as out of this world as time travel. The second fault was that the main characters made love in detail so many times it was beginning to get boring. In most romances, the first time or two are detailed, which they need to be, and then after that, unless it is being used as main event part of the story, an author can summarize over it and not go into the whole thing again and again. However, the storyline kept you reading which saves this book from being 2 stars.

      4 out of 5 stars A whimsical escape -- Recommended.......2001-09-07

There's something winningly whimsical and marvelously magical about the premise of the power of a hope chest and equinoxes winging characters across time to find healing and love. A hope chest found in the historic Chesterfield, now undergoing renovation provides the focal point for this series. In Karen Fox's GRAND DESIGN, the third book of the Hope Chest miniseries, it's the nameplate from a portrait that carries frustrated artist Cynda Madison back in time to find her love.

Cynda Madison finds a strikingly handsome face beneath the years of filth in a portrait she's been commissioned to restore. Her own artwork lacks the sweeping passion apparent in every brush stroke, leaving her wishing for such bold zeal. When she's swept back in time, Cynda immediately recognizes Prince Dimitri Karakov from the portrait, finding the living man even sexier than the portrait. Her warnings of danger, however, fall on deaf ears when she tries to warn him that he's to die on December 12th.

Duty comes before pleasure for Prince Dimitri Karakov, even when it comes to Cynda. He wearies of the husband hunting vixens at the Chesterfield, where he's accompanying his grandmother while she takes in the healing waters. Cynda brings a welcome respite with her forthright, direct speech and lack of flirtatiousness. While she's much too forward for a servant, her intelligence and quick-wittedness makes her irresistible. When his younger brother shows interest in Cynda, Dimitri's unprepared for his overwhelming jealousy. Too bad he's been pledged since birth to a proper woman for a Prince.

Readers who enjoyed the previous two installments of this miniseries as well as fans of author Karen Fox's PRINCE OF CHARMING will thrill to this newest offering, GRAND DESIGN. As in PRINCE OF CHARMING, Fox brings her love of painting to GRAND DESIGN, when a portrait wings this heroine back in time. With her characteristic ingenuity, Fox paints a blend of the fantastic and the mundane, bringing enormous passion to her canvas in this portrait of love. Favorite secondary characters of this miniseries seamlessly connect the novel to the other parts of the miniseries, in addition to introducing two willful, strong-minded main characters. A playful, lighthearted read, GRAND DESIGN is perfect reading for an afternoon. Recommended.

          Book Description

When a sweet, elderly lady with a mysterious past comes to town,
Joy starts to meddle–and bungles things, big-time!

A core series in the Children of Faith line, Becky Freeman’s Camp Wanna Banana Mysteries use exciting adventures to help instill in grade school kids a deep love of God. Young readers love the action-packed escapades of ten-year-old twins Jake and Joy, and their “twibling” (twin sibling) friends, Marco and Maria, which take place at what could be the very best Christian youth camp in the world!

Book Five begins as campers start arriving at Camp Wanna Banana for the summer, and as a kind, elderly woman named “Mopsy” moves to Tall Pines. Everyone loves Mopsy. But when Joy reads somebody else’s mail one day, she starts to suspect that dear, sweet Mopsy just might be hiding some very important secrets.

Soon, Joy is snooping in places where she shouldn’t–and meddling in ways that bring problems not only for her, but for everyone she loves. As she seeks to uncover the truth about Mopsy’s past, Joy learns the hard way that sticking our noses into other people’s business–even with the best of intentions–can only end in trouble. She also learns that with God’s help, and a little bit of grace from other people, things sometimes turn out all right in the end, after all.

This is the first book in the Hope Chest series and I found it fun, with a realistic heroine, not like the "Walk on me, it's okay!" wimps in the books that came out in the 70s or 80s. Brains are sexy and Gina Charles is definitely smart, smart-alecky and resourceful as well as adaptable when she finds herself thrown back in time.

Drake Manton is equally as sexy as a mesmerist who knows his talents are far more useful as theraputic methods than parlor tricks. The characters were true to their individual times (21st century woman and ninetheenth century man) and the hotel was a wonderful main setting as well as a neat time travel element. Don't look for an old-fashioned romance here--it's fresh, new, and entertaining!

          5 out of 5 stars Great Time-Travel.......2002-09-11

Drake and Gina's story is a really fun time travel, and part of a great series. Gina is, thank heavens, a modern woman who doesn't get stuck in some of the more tired cliches of the past, and Drake isn't one of those alpha heroes that you want to bop over the head. I love how it's his ghost that draws Gina back into the past, too. Why can't *I* check into hotel rooms like that? I highly recommend ENCHANTMENT, and the whole Hope Chest series.

5 out of 5 stars Great Time Travel!.......2002-09-10

I really enjoyed the quirky, liberated, modern, intelligent heroine in this novel. The hero is a nice contrast to her upbeat personality, and together they make a great romantic couple. More, please!

          3 out of 5 stars enjoyable book 1st in a series.......2002-05-13

This is the first book in the Hope Chest series. I had read the 3rd book, "Grand Design" first before I found out it was a series. I really enjoy these books. They have excitment, mystery, passion and humor. All the must have ingredients for a great book. The other books in the series are "Fire With Fire" and "Stolen Hearts" There is a fifth book but I don't have that title as of yet.

This story starts off in modern day with our heroine, Gina running away to nurse her wounds after she discovers her fiance making love to her best friend on the eve of her wedding. She ends up in a town called Hope Springs. There she meets our hero or at least his ghost. Drake Manton died in 1885 but is somehow haunting the small hotel she's in. She is the only person who can see him. He has no idea how he died and asks for her help.
When they discover that he died in a fire at the historic Chesterfield Hotel they go to the ruins only to find a chest filled with several items. When gina picks up the melted gun she is transported back to 1885. She has to make a living in the past and unlock the mystery of Drakes death and keep him from dying and she can go back to her own time. The thing is that she really falls for Drake and he for her so the questing is will she go if she gets the chance? I really enjoyed the suspence of finding out.

I look forward to other books in this series and other by this author.

          4 out of 5 stars A Fun Romance.......2002-05-04

After finding a hope chest she is sent back in time. Trying to fit in and change Drake's fate is only part of the fun of this book. I am looking forward to the rest of the Series there are five books in all.
