Change can be a blessing or a curse, depending on your perspective. The message of Who Moved My Cheese? is that all can come to see it as a blessing, if they understand the nature of cheese and the role it plays in their lives. Who Moved My Cheese? is a parable that takes place in a maze. Four beings live in that maze: Sniff and Scurry are mice--nonanalytical and nonjudgmental, they just want cheese and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it. Hem and Haw are "littlepeople," mouse-size humans who have an entirely different relationship with cheese. It's not just sustenance to them; it's their self-image. Their lives and belief systems are built around the cheese they've found. Most of us reading the story will see the cheese as something related to our livelihoods--our jobs, our career paths, the industries we work in--although it can stand for anything, from health to relationships. The point of the story is that we have to be alert to changes in the cheese, and be prepared to go running off in search of new sources of cheese when the cheese we have runs out.

Dr. Johnson, coauthor of The One Minute Manager and many other books, presents this parable to business, church groups, schools, military organizations--anyplace where you find people who may fear or resist change. And although more analytical and skeptical readers may find the tale a little too simplistic, its beauty is that it sums up all natural history in just 94 pages: Things change. They always have changed and always will change. And while there's no single way to deal with change, the consequence of pretending change won't happen is always the same: The cheese runs out. --Lou Schuler

3 out of 5 stars It's an OK book.......2007-10-04

Just like most of the people, I got this book from my employer (I hope it's not a sign of restructuring :)).
I'm afraid that I do a too good job of reviewing the book one would no longer need to buy it anymore. In essence, the whole book can be summarized in about 10 statements. In all fairness though, these are insightful and worth meditating on statements.
So, like I said... An OK book.

3 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking.......2007-10-03

The book is an easy and quick read but the story will put thoughts in your head that you will think about for years if not a lifetime. Life brings us all challenges so this book is for all of us... That is, unless your life is perfect.

1 out of 5 stars Genuinely Insulting..........2007-09-29

Genuinely insulting to the independent thinker. Yeah I know, it's been said countless times but I felt the need to reinforce that notion. If you're someone that's more comfortable being a follower and having your life and work environment structured for you then you're more likely to enjoy this book and find something meaningful in it. If you're someone that uses logic and reason to guide your decisions then don't waste your time or money on this rehashed brainwashing manual. This is a book written for unquestioning, mindless followers, not a book for leaders. But a tool that leaders would use to try and control their subordinates.

4 out of 5 stars who moved my cheese.......2007-09-21

Light, but nevertheless thought provoking reading. Good for an hour or so by the fire.

1 out of 5 stars Overrated.......2007-09-17

This book has been considered a classic by many and used widely in the corporate world. In my opinion, however, if you are seriously considering reinventing yourself or improving how you manage life, this book won't get you there. Change doesn't come about with a superficial one-hour read. Consider a book like "The Path of Least Resistance" by Robert Fritz. It will take more time and effort, but I think it's a seminal work in the field of human motivational theory. If you give it a chance, it might transform you.

Book Description

The dust storms that terrorized the High Plains in the darkest years of the Depression were like nothing ever seen before or since. Timothy Egan's critically acclaimed account rescues this iconic chapter of American history from the shadows in a tour de force of historical reportage. Following a dozen families and their communities through the rise and fall of the region, Egan tells of their desperate attempts to carry on through blinding black dust blizzards, crop failure, and the death of loved ones. Brilliantly capturing the terrifying drama of catastrophe, Egan does equal justice to the human characters who become his heroes, "the stoic, long-suffering men and women whose lives he opens up with urgency and respect" (New York Times). In an era that promises ever-greater natural disasters, "The Worst Hard Time" is "arguably the best nonfiction book yet" (Austin Statesman Journal) on the greatest environmental disaster ever to be visited upon our land and a powerful cautionary tale about the dangers of trifling with nature.

The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl

This is an outstanding book! I had no idea how bad the Dust Bowl was. I was so impressed with the book that I bought a copy for each of my 3 siblings.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!.......2007-10-03

This book was fantastic. Although the majority of books I read are fiction, I'm not hesitant to read good non-fiction. This book was so well written that it reads like a taut novel. Along with Seabiscuit and The Devil in the White City, it is one of the best historical books I've read. Very well researched and thought out. You almost can't believe that this could have actually happened. You feel like you know the characters, and you certainly root for them even though you seemingly know how it will turn out. I would recommend this book to any avid reader - fiction or non-fiction.

4 out of 5 stars Hopefully, we will learn from our past.......2007-10-02

This is an important event in US history that is so relevant today, supplying more fuel for both side of the ongoing debate on global warming.

I found it a bit difficult to stay connected to the characters. In spite of that, the story remained interesting, showing the plight and hardships endured by the generation before us, and bringing us an awareness of our fragile ecosystem.

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opening and Hard to Put Down.......2007-09-25

A must read for history buffs and readers in general. Information places the midwest, its people, and past in an entirely different light of appreciation. (Absolutely Facinating)!

3 out of 5 stars Fine story, good history, a little light on analysis.......2007-09-18

Egan's *Worst Hard Time* is intriguing and largely well done, if a bit relentless. Granted, he's writing about a phenomenon that dragged on for years, repeatedly raising and dashing ever-slimmer hopes; the people who lived the "Dust Bowl" years were literally worn out, but Egan needed to do something more with the material than recreate that sensation. Toward the last third of the book, in particular, a kind of sameness creeps into the narrative, as if Egan didn't really know what else to say -- which I suspect is connected to my sense that he relied too much on too few sources (including a diary that he overuses) -- and his slightly jerky style gets distracting (he's not a great one for writing transitions). For me, one failing is that Egan never explains, in any specific way, the origin and cause of the "black dusters" and other freakish weather phenomena of the "Dust Bowl" era. He tells us that the dust storms came because the topsoil had been carved off by overfarming (and then aggravated by the abandonment of unsuccessful farms), but a meteorological or ecological explanation - even a nontechnical one - wouldn't have been a bad idea. His description of the CCC efforts at re-grassing the plains left me with significant questions that he doesn't answer: Given that the dust storms continued unabated throughout the effort, what was the government's strategy for protecting the newly planted grass during the time it would have taken for it to mature enough to hold the soil? And how did they water it? In addition, I'd have appreciated a more substantive "bring us up to date" chapter at the end that explained more clearly what happened in the wake of the human and policy failures of the Dust Bowl. Nor would a little class analysis have hurt -- other than wagging a kind of general finger at get-rich schemes perpetrated both by private interests and by the government, he seems careful not to accuse anybody too directly of creating an ecological disaster, of maiming (psychologically and literally) and killing tens of thousands of people, or of engaging in a kind of class warfare that embodied the ferocious social Darwinism of Depression-era capitalism. Finally, I'd just point out that the book isn't really the story of "survivors" of the Dust Bowl; there are essentially no survivors, and this is no movie-of-the-week tale of grit, courage, and heroism that win out in the end. The people Egan follows are bleak and broken, and their desperation is palpable. *Worst Hard Time* begs the question: Is there any redemption? I think Egan knows there was none, but he seems loathe to say it in so many words.

5 out of 5 stars Should Be Required Reading!.......2007-09-24

I can't stop talking about this book! I first heard Mr. Peebles on the Steve Harvey morning show. I was impressed. Then, I had the pleasure of hearing him speak at a Michigan Minority Business Development Council/General Motors event. I was even more impressed. I took home my autographed copy of his book that day and began reading it. I was addicted! I could not put it down! Every spare moment I had, I was in this book! He literally becomes your mentor. This book is a practical application manual. He shares what went wrong and what went right, he names names and pulls no punches! Mr. Peebles has put to shame many other authors, claiming to want to teach us how to become rich in real estate or other industries, for holding out on us!

5 out of 5 stars Must read for ANYONE aspiring to do big deals!.......2007-09-23

This is a very easy to read, step-by-step book of the anatomy of a deal. Often we say that we would like to be the lamp in the room of a big deal and Peebles puts us there time and time again! The candor and honesty expressed regarding the deal structure and his thoughts behind the decisions made was nothing short of generous! I have been in business for seven years. I could not figure out why my firm had not advanced to the next level... Now I understand! For a man, independently wealthy, he charitably gives the rest of us some insight to advancing our own goals and closing our own deals! I have recommended the book to at least 10 colleagues in two weeks!

5 out of 5 stars I love the Peebles Principles.......2007-09-04

I read books all the time about very successful people, most happen to be in industries other than in the Real Estate industry that I am in. I have also read about a lot developers like Donald Trump, but until know this is one of the most successful Minority Developers I have the pleasure of studying. The ability to stand fast with no legs to stand on is a lesson in itself. You have to believe you are adding value in any relationship for all to feel a certain equality.

His vision and tenacity to follow through, seems to be a trait a lot of Entrepreneurs lack. This is a real How To Book, most will try to cafeteria style it, and do it there way, bit it will not work. From the moment I finished reading it,I started trying to build political contacts. I will be giving my first campaign donation this year. I never understood the importance of who you know, not what it is that you know, until I read The Peebles Principles. I would just like to congratulate Mr. Pebbles on his massive success.

It seems as if Mr. Peebles is unstoppable know, I just recently read that he is constructing the most expensive Minority Owned hotel in Las Vegas as we speak. This just gives the average person that does not have a Harvard Degree the confidence that you can do it if you want it bad enough. In closing I would recommend this book to anyone that has ever wanted to pursue a career as a Real Estate Investor. It gives you a different path to the promised land.

Darrick H Scruggs

5 out of 5 stars Can this genius possibly have more fun?.......2007-08-01

Read this book. It will force you to completely rethink just how you can operate within the free-market business world. My once forgotten career dreams of yesteryear have been rediscovered and are now being fulfilled with a renewed vigor. Mr. Peebles has an astute business mind coupled with a tireless desire to succeed with his ethics intact.

5 out of 5 stars Real People, Real Stories, Real Lessons.......2007-06-12

The Peebles Principles is an excellent, but at the same time, easy read. I recommend it to anyone in business or thinking about going into business. His story should be an inspiration to all who want to succeed in business and in life, regardless of race or economic background. It is a must read for everyone in my family.

5 out of 5 stars A Quick Guide to Venture Capital Thinking.......2006-06-21

This book, one claimed by the publisher to fall into the need-to-read category rather than the nice-to-read, is aimed at giving the businessman the information he needs to know to be able to hold an intelligent conversation with a venture capitalist.

It's a pretty quick and easy read, but the businessman who has gotten his business up to the stage where outside money is needed is probably not a financial type but an engineer, or scientist or perhaps just plain businessman. This book, written from the venture capitalist standpoint, will explain to him such things as how to value a company, verious types of stock, dilution of the ownership, in short, all of the things that will need to be understood when a big time financial deal goes down.

It's not an in depth book, each of these subjects can and has several books describing them 'in depth.' Instead it is a small book that gives you what you need to know quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book - But Even Better is Author DVD Called Negotiating Term Sheets & Valuations in VC Deals.......2006-05-17

This author definitely knows his stuff - but even better is author's new product called Negotiating Term Sheets and Valuations in Venture Capital Deals (ISBN 1597010987). It is a 100 minute DVD that has a lot of different material in it that is critical for doing venture capital deals. It also covers specific negotiation strategies and roles and motivations for each key deal participant - which is not covered in this book or the authors other book (Term Sheets & Valuations).

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2006-05-15

After enjoying his first book, Term Sheets and Valuations, I was looking forward to this one. I regret to say that I found it a big waste of time and a bigger waste of money.

It appears as if the marketing of the book by the pblisher sought to take advantage of his first book by raising the price by 500%, giving the impression that this book was better or more comprehensive. However, nothing could be further from the truth.

4 out of 5 stars Solid reference for entrepreneurs.......2005-12-29

'Deal Terms' is a solid reference for entrepreneurs with 'need-to-read' (as opposed to 'nice-to-read') information regarding venture financing deals. I find Wilmerding's interviews with various relevant players (e.g. legal counsellor, venture capitalist, entrepreneur) to be a good differentiator of the book; the quick analysis of actual term sheet is also pragmatic. The 'Valuation' section is relatively generic & is the weaker part of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful, practical, and brilliant!.......2004-05-07

I recently finished your book "Deal Terms" and found it extremely
helpful as we are looking into our first round of financing.

This book showed me numerous issues that I would have definitely overlooked or simply not thought of.

Thanks for writing Deal Terms. Definitely an invaluable
reference for anyone in business!

Book Description

The definitive and rollicking story of one of the best, and one of the wackiest, teams of all time, during one of the most vital eras in baseball.

With The Gashouse Gang, John Heidenry delivers the definitive account of one the greatest and most colorful baseball teams of all times, the 1934 St. Louis Cardinals, filled with larger-than-life baseball personalities like Branch Rickey, Leo Durocher, Pepper Martin, Casey Stengel, Satchel Paige, Frankie Frisch, and--especially--the eccentric good ol' boy and great pitcher Dizzy Dean and his brother Paul.

The year 1934 marked the lowest point of the Great Depression, when the U.S. went off the gold standard, banks collapsed by the score, and millions of Americans were out of work. Epic baseball feats offered welcome relief from the hardships of daily life. The Gashouse Gang, the brilliant culmination of a dream by its general manager, Branch Rickey, the first to envision a farm system that would acquire and "educate" young players in the art of baseball, was adored by the nation, who saw itself--scruffy, proud, and unbeatable--in the Gang.

Based on original research and told in entertaining narrative style, The Gashouse Gang brings a bygone era and a cast full of vivid personalities to life and unearths a treasure trove of baseball lore that will delight any fan of the great American pastime.

5 out of 5 stars Baseball lover's only!.......2007-09-23

Baseball in times long passed was a very different game, but like today there were some really wild characters to mke the game all the more interesting. The 1934 Cardinals, "The Gashouse Gang" were an exciting, odd collection of great ball payers who played for the love of the game in a way we wish today's players did.

If you love baseball you won't be able to put this down, and even if you don't it will be too intriquing to stop reading once you start. Well written, well researched and as entertaining as anything I've read this season. Highly reccommended!

5 out of 5 stars The Gashouse Gang Personalities.......2007-09-15

This book climbs to the top wrung of my baseball ladder. Rather than a statistical or play-by-play book so common in baseball pages, this features personality development of some of the wackiest players of all time. Learn that Ducky Joe should have been Mean Joe, that Leo the Lip couldn't handle relationships, or that Dizzy Dean was really Jerome or Jay or Hanna or Herman, maybe that he was from Arkansas or Oklahoma or Texas -- well, you get it.

This book captures the thrill of a season and the joy of a team effort. It really makes you think of the Oakland Athletics of the Catfish days.

Just one observation: John Heidenry missed the point of the moniker, "Gashouse Gang." He can't figure out where it came from. He even ponders how "Gas Tank" became "Gashouse." During that day, electricity was provided by manufactured gas plants, sometimes called "witch's brew." The main structure was known as the "gashouse." The working class fellows who toiled away in those dirty gashouses were known as "the gashouse gangs." They cursed, they played dirty and hilarious tricks on each other, they had great and sour dispositions -- necessary to get through the tough days, and yes, their clothes were always filthy. Sound like the beloved Gashouse Gang?

Snag this book, and you will enjoy several hours of quiet time, if you can block out your own laughter.

5 out of 5 stars Me 'n' Paul.......2007-09-02

In baseball, 1934 was a year to remember, a year in which the Saint Louis Cardinals, a scruffy team of misfits and malcontents, came from almost the graveyard to win the National League pennant, and then the World Series. While we learn a tremendous amount about the Cardinals, and especially the Dean brothers, Dizzy and Paul, there are others about whom we receive thumbnail biographies. Most importantly, Branch Rickey is focused upon for much of the early part of the book, and just reading about this remarkable man is sufficient reason to study this book. Other famous players make cameo appearances: Babe Ruth, Mel Otto, Mickey Cochrane, Leo Durocher, and Pie Traynor, with whom I was once priviledged to have an extensive conversation about baseball when I was in college. I also remember listening to Dizzy on the television announcing(?) games and talking about all kinds of extraneous subjects other than the game he was supposed to be calling. Of course, Dizzy is the centerpiece of this book, and he strides through it like a colossus. He did things then that would not be tolerated by a basseball organization today, and perhaps we are the pooorer for not having men such as him (and Curt Flood)to challenge what is considered the "right" way to act as a porfessional ball player. He's gone, and so are all of those famous old-timers, and the world misses them!

5 out of 5 stars Great Father's Day gift.......2007-07-12

I gave this book to my 60 year old father for Father's Day. He hasn't read a book in years but is a huge baseball fan. He loved the book and stayed up late into the night reading it. Great for a Cardinals or baseball fan!

4 out of 5 stars RICK SHAQ GOLDSTEIN SAYS: "73 YEARS AFTER WINNING THE WORLD SERIES "THE GASHOUSE GANG" ST LOUIS CARDINALS HAVE A BOOK!".......2007-06-13

Before I give you the details of this book, let me save some people their valuable time, by telling you who this book would appeal to! Old School Baseball fanatics, "Baseball Historians", Saint Louis Cardinal fans. If you think the designated hitter rule is good for baseball this book isn't for you.

73 years after the famous (To the above listed people.) Saint Louis Cardinals, hereafter known as "The Gashouse Gang", won the World Series, they have had an excellent book released on their exploits and accomplishments. As a self-acclaimed baseball fanatic, some of the statistics, and idiosyncrasies, I discovered in this book about famous old time players that I already knew about, were both interesting and amusing. The author's writing style is not anything you'll remember as out of the ordinary, since so much of the meat of the book, you can tell is repeated from old newspaper articles. But the detailed, meticulous, research should be applauded. As I've mentioned in my earlier reviews, I've read literally hundreds of baseball books, and memorized half the "Encyclopedia Of Baseball" when I was 10 years old, yet I learned even more details and amusing personality "quirks" of some of the old-time stars. I of course already knew that Dizzy Dean was a great pitcher, in the Hall Of Fame, and the last National League pitcher to win 30 games. What I didn't know, but learned here, was the absolute bottom of the barrel poverty he came from in the historically famous "dust bowl"! I knew he was a "wacky" character, but I didn't know, it went to the extent of him literally being the Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali, of the baseball world in the 1930's, before there was an Ali. I didn't know that Dizzy held out and boycotted games, in a demand for an increased contract, in the middle of the season. I also got to learn much more about the great Ducky Medwick, (The last National League Player to win the Triple Crown 70 years ago.) who was one of my dear departed Mother's favorite players, when he later played on the Brooklyn Dodgers. I never knew he was such a New Jersey, street fighting, chip on the shoulder, ready to fight anyone, including his own teammates, type of guy! I learned more than I ever had known about what led up to one of the biggest name trades in baseball history, Rogers Hornsby for Frankie Frisch. The detailed background on Branch Rickey, before his famous relationship with Jackie Robinson, was also expertly detailed. The almost blow by blow reporting on the 1934 World Series between the Gashouse Gang and the star studded Detroit Tigers makes you feel like you were there. I could go on and on, but like I said in my opening sentences, these facts, that are exciting and educational to me, would only be exciting to the type of people I described in my opening.

2 out of 5 stars Some good info, but VERY confusing.......2007-06-25

I had a very difficult time reading this book...my expectations were high, and I've just come to the realization that my ex was a very controlling person. I'm determined to not let this happen again, so the title of the book really appealed to me.

I think the most difficult part of this book is Evan's "labeling" of different types people in the book. I felt by the second chapter that I needed a bookmark to remind me of all of the terms, and who they related to. Is a spellbound person the same as a controller? I'm still overwhelmed by the after-effects of my relationship that my mind had great difficulty with keeping track of the characters. Perhaps it may work when she's speaking to a group, but it a book I don't think it's quite as effective.

I almost put the book down about 50 pages in because it was difficult to read, but I trudged on through because occasionally I would find a pearl of wisdom that made me want another.

I also felt that I was "on a roll" towards page 150 or so, and finally "getting it," then the focus of the book seemed to change to hate crimes and cults and other things that seemed to not fit. I understand that they are related, but the rest of the book seemed to focus on control in relationships...it seemed like they might be two totally separate books. I ended up flipping through until I found more content that related to relationships.

Overall, I did learn some interesting things about controlling people, and did buy another Evans Book, The Verbally Abusive Relationship: How to Recognize it and How to Respond which is pretty good (I think better). But I see the same issues with labeling that make it a little to follow as well. When I tried to relate the book to a friend and used these terms to explain, she thought I was nuts! (Imagine trying to explain the Teddy Bear thing to a friend)

I also didn't understand Ms. Evans' stories about the people who approached her at the hotel during the conference. It made me feel sorry for the people who were trying to make conversation with her...it seemed to me that she was exhibiting the same insensitivity and control that I've been experiencing for the past few years. I'm not sure of the relevance of these stories to the book...

4 out of 5 stars Very clever analysis.......2007-06-12

This book brought to bear a unique insight into a complicated and subtle process to which we are all subject to in one way or another at different times. It is written in simple straightforward and uncomplicated language. I recommend it strongly.

5 out of 5 stars Overcoming My Daily Dread, review by Connie Cook Smith.......2007-05-08

I haven't quite finished the book, but that's because it brings up so much, so well, that one who comes from the demented world that Evans illuminates must break off and process periodically. Or break off and "go away" for awhile.

To really get my mind around the corrective material, I had to stop about half-way through and go back and review all my underlinings. I have proceeded since then, but on that second look, Evans' clarity about her subject and my own fuzziness from being raised and soaked in a controlling reality, began to penetrate better. Evans often uses the term "backwards" to describe what a controlling person does. When I could see that she was dead-on about the results of that backwards behavior, it more closely fit my own experience of the inside-out and upside-down world I come from -- where the victim is ALWAYS accused of being the perpetrator -- and has life-long believed it!

Perhaps most helpful so far is the assertion that being raised on (or living with) verbal abuse is WORSE than physical abuse. It helped me consciously validate a vague awareness that physical assaults can completely heal in many cases, but a maimed mind is that through which every day is processed and experienced, and therefore a verbal abuse victim's entire reality is quite different from a non-abused person's. I don't know if it's in the book, but I once ran across a quote from a Peter Jennings Special on this subject and captured this statement: "A child from such a background has no chance at a normal life."

For sure. Some of my classmates now are taking early retirement from their satisfying careers, with all benefits and assets to take them forward. I limped through college (despite a very high IQ) but was so convinced "I am a horrible thing" that I had to quit and hide from every serious job. I have no assets, no medical care, my third marriage IS working out (from a lot of work!), but my husband had brain-tumor surgery and is in a long recovery. We live in federal housing, but I do love being with his intact, basically wonderful personality! He always was and always is willing to work things out, and so am I -- so we DO at least have each other -- and we have produced some high quality and highly creative items, even though mostly un-marketed.

The only improvement I would suggest in the book is the replacement of the current term "verbal abuse" with the old terminology from grounds for divorce: Mental Cruelty! The daily torment of being raised by or being with a verbal abuser requires a more graphic description in order to be better legitimized and taken much more seriously -- especially by the victim! Part of the cruelty IS that the victim has been convinced he/she is ALWAYS wrong, about everything, and never has a chance to experience life beyond the perpetual condemnation of being A Horrible Thing. Joy is for OTHER people. Medical care is for OTHER people. Success is for OTHER people -- good things are certainly not for A Horrible Thing like me!

Thanks to Evans' book (and A LOT of other self-work), I may be getting one foot over the line into a world where people experience gratification at being alive -- instead of what's been decade after decade of My Daily Dread. And that is -- despite high intelligence, numerous talents, and an amazing sense of humor -- there always has dominated the brainwashed awareness that I am ACTUALLY A Horrible Thing. There has always been My Daily Dread -- of being me. I think Evans' book is a big step towards healing this.

1 out of 5 stars A zero rated book - A real disappointment with a Great Title.......2007-04-20

For such a serious subject matter, I was surprised and even curious that the author's bio or expertise is regulated to the back of the paperback book in one sentence. The other two sentences are related to media appearance and praise. (Choosing not to Google her, I read the book anyways).

note: the quotes are from the book.

On page 35 and 150 a bookmercial was introduced for another of the author's book instead of discussions on why the subject matter would be a trait or characteristic of a controlling person.

On page 71-74 two separate stories explaining a concept "defining .. were a way of connecting". The stories did not indicated how long a "stranger" had to be in your presence before such a concept could be triggered. If these people were at the same convention that the author attended, how long was the presentation, did she see them at the convention, did she talk to those two people in a question and answer session, or were they just the fans? At what point does the switch get triggered in the stranger's action for them to feel comfortable in crossing the "psychic boundary".

on page 165 I think the author missed an opportunity to share a control type situation outside a "couple or parent relationship". ie "I'm your therapist. You should follow my advice." IMHO Lea was also attracting people into her life who wanted to control her in addition to her relationship with Vic.

Lastly, on page 288-290 you can participate in a survey geared for "Spell bound" issues for the Patricia Evans, Evans Interpersonal Communications Institute. There isn't any background on what the Insitutes does or is even mentioned in the book.

IMHO I would not recommend this book to anyone. I can see why many readers would feel a connection with the book. There are several stories that a person would relate to if they were in a controlling relationship, but I step back and think about how can a person get pointers on when the control activity begins to occur. Do you have to wait several years or
decades to figure out that the relationship has a problem in it. I think there are always warning signals. ie on p 29 when "Ted ... was beside himself."

4 out of 5 stars Controlling People: How to Recognize, Understand, and Deal with People Who Try To Control You.......2007-02-23

Once I started reading this book, I could not stop it was so dead on when it came to the description of Controlling People it made me shake, it reminded me of my husband (who has since moved out). I was not aware of controlling people until my encounter. But this book is just amazing in assisting you to understand what is on the controlling persons mind and why they do what they do. I would highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for all responders!.......2006-11-29

This is a great review of the ICS process! It's easy to read, with exceptional examples of each situation, how to conduct meetings, and how to fill out the ICS forms. I have brought it to a few excercises with me and everyone who looks at it, wants one! The authors did an INCREDIBLE job of combining their particular areas of expertise into a very educational product!

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended - clear, concise and well crafted........2006-08-15

An exceptional reference and text. Clearly, the authors have many years experience in emergency response and have applied their expertise to the core incident management concepts. If you are looking for a way to understand the National Incident Management System from concept to `nuts and bolts, down in the field' processes, this is the best you will find.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read Book On Oil and gas Well Investing.......2007-07-13

Oil and gas well investing is risky and very profitable. This book provides a great detailed over view of the industry, gas well geology, the risks associated with investing and the science behind successful investing.
Don't tread into the oil and gas patch before reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Good Primer For Anyone Looking At Oil & Gas Opportunities.......2006-07-05

Mr. Orban has penned a very useful guide to the oil business. He covers all the important aspects of the industry and packages it especially for the investor. After reading this book, you'll know most everything you'll need to know in order to enter an intelligent, informed discussion with most anyone on the subject of oil & gas. The book is particularly helpful in directing you to ask the right questions of the right people to evaluate any deal or project. If you're new to oil & gas investing, this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book For Investors.......2006-02-25

I bought this book to evaluate an oil investment opportunity. Prior to reading this book, I knew nothing about the oil business. After reading the book, I felt comfortable enough to invest. The book gave me the knowledge I needed to ask the right questions and to evaluate the fundamental assumptions upon which the investment was based. I'd recommend this book to anyone who knows little about the industry, but wants a good overview to evaluate a potential investment opportunity.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for the novice investor.......2005-10-14

Being a newly acquired employee of the oil and gas industry this has really helped me out in a number of ways. It puts things in very basic terms on what goes on in an oil deal and how all the components of downstream and upstream work together. It has a great section in the book about the tax benefits related to the oil and gas industry. It really should be called "The oil business for dummies" book. I would suggest this book to any one that is a mineral owner or just some one that is interested in investing in an O&G Fund or O&G company.

Book Description

From the Impresario of NBC’s hit show The Apprentice

TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I like thinking big. I always have. To me it’s very simple: if you’re going to be thinking anyway, you might as well think big.”

And here’s how he does it: the art of the deal.

Beginning with a week in Trump’s high-stakes life, Trump: The Art of the Deal gives us Trump in action. We see just how he operates day to day—how he runs his business and how he runs his life—as he chats with friends and family, clashes with enemies, efficiently buys up Atlantic City’s top casinos, changes the face of the New York City skyline . . . and plans the tallest building in the world.

TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I play it very loose. I don’t carry a briefcase. I try not to schedule too many meetings. I leave my door open. . . . I prefer to come to work each day and just see what develops.”

Even a maverick plays by rules, and here Trump formulates his own eleven guidelines for success. He isolates the common elements in his greatest deals; he shatters myths (“You don’t necessarily need the best location. What you need is the best deal”); he names names, spells out the zeros, and fully reveals the deal-maker’s art: from the abandoned property that became the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center to the seedy hotel that became the Grand Hyatt; from the race to rebuild Central Park’s Wollman Skating Rink to the byzantine saga of the property that became Trump Tower. And throughout, Trump talks—really talks—about how he does it.

TRUMP ON TRUMP: “I always go into a deal anticipating the worst. If you plan for the worst—if you can live with the worst—the good will always take care of itself.”

Donald Trump is blunt, brash, surprisingly old-fashioned in spots—and always, always an original. Trump: The Art of the Deal is an unguarded look at the mind of a brilliant entrepreneur and an unprecedented education in the art of the deal. It’s the most streetwise business book there is—and a sizzling read for anyone interested in money and success.

3 out of 5 stars [2 stars out of four, or three out of five] Trump, trumps himself and fails sports 101 in the process.......2007-09-27

Unless your a fan of this braggard, who's gone
bankrupt more times than O.J., the N.Y. and N.J
markets are gonna be oblique to most. But the sports
parts are not that good. Yes, I was glad to see the
USFL challenge the overrated NFL and yes, I was glad
to have trumps high priced lawyers stick it to the
Corporate Fascist Alvin H. Rosencranz (who euphanis-
tically called himself 'Pete' Rozelle. But Trump
makes so many wrong statements in here that one has
to wonder if there was an illiterate ghost-writer
afoot. No, the American Football League did NOT
start in 1962, it was 1960-69. No the 1970's old
World Football League didn't start in 1973, it was
1974-75. He also lied about Don Shula, Miami's
legendary Coach about to come Coach the USFL's
New Jersey team. Trump claims Shula nixed the deal
because he wanted an apartment in Trump's building
- Free! He claims Larry Csonka's idea to merge the
CFL (is something like that were posible) was a
bad idea caliming that the CFL had a bunch of nobody
players - totally untrue! They still to this day have
many great players. NFL QBs like Trent Green, Jeff
Garcia and others have CFL experience. Trump's sign-
ing of Doug Flutie was a highlight to be sure. It was
the third straight Heisman winner the USFL beat out
the NFL from getting in their league although they
all went there later. Get Flutie's book entitled
Flutie for the real story. It took Flutie until 1988
to get all his money owed him. Trump's main loss in
a USFL sense was bribing the other USFL owners to
going to the fall. Yes, this artsie-fartsie dealer
is slick. But is always comes back around and now
he is on the Apprentice. And dumb commercials.R.I.P.

5 out of 5 stars I just really enjoyed it.......2007-09-10

So this book is not a plain "how to" book. That's fine. If you have just enough skill, you'll find that this is not only great story telling about how he put all these deals together that made him millions upon millions, but also how he did it. He throws bits of his psychology around through out the book, those are easy to catch, and if you look just a little deeper you'll see all the other points that helped make him so rich, things like: persuasion, hard work, calculated risk, being involved in your business, don't leave things to chance, work with the best, don't be afraid of something you don't know, find ways to make things work for you, etc. I could go on and on.

Don't expect this to be your "how to make deals manual" but if you are the right person, you just might get more pointers than you expect. Like I said in the title, I just really enjoyed this book, regardless of what it is not.

5 out of 5 stars Oldie but a Goodie.......2007-09-03

This book may be 20 years old, but the practices explained are as timely today as they were then. The basics rarely change, whether you are dealing in real estate or producing a product. The chapters are concise, solid stories on how deals were put together, obsticles overcome and politics played. Mr. Trump's style is an easy read and explains the game that he loves and makes no apologies for; making money. I found it a fascinating book.

4 out of 5 stars Ahhh The Donald............2007-07-25

Dont expect to get much advice on how to negociate a deal.. even though the book is titled "The art of the deal" The book is more so about Trump, his life and his business dealings. Its still pretty good reading none the less. 4 Stars.

4 out of 5 stars I'm not a big fan of Trump.......2007-07-01

But I have to be honest; I thought the book was great. Mostly, I'm not a big fan because I find him to be vein, pompous, arrogant, and a blatant self-promoter. You have to give it to him though, this is what works for him, and this is what has made Donald Trump a household name. I think he'd be successful regardless, but like most successful developers he wouldn't be a celebrity (how many millionaire developers do you know?). The beautiful thing about it is he's pretty honest about his strategy in the book. This book was written 20 years ago, and even then he was the same guy. He understands the power of promotion, even if it's self-promotion.

There are several things I loved about the book. First, his blatant honesty about himself, the reason why he does the things he does, and his opinions on his rivals. He comes clean about his strategy for calling everything he does the best, greatest, or biggest "in the world". He knows it may or may not be true, but he's just after the effect of those powerful words, and not whether or not they can be contested.

Second, I enjoyed the journey of traveling through his mind, as he contemplates the pros and cons, and finally the reason for moving forward with or declining the deals described in his book.

Lastly, I really felt like you get a better understanding of what his day-to-day is like. Even thought this is 20 years ago, his routine is probably about the same, doing a thousand things at once. All of which must meet his standard for tremendous scale and proportion.

Trump has a strategy, and his arrogance is part of it. He has reached his many goals and for him, life is really about these challenges, and the fun of surpassing them and getting to the finish line. This hobby of his has amounted to a tremendous personal fortune. But in the end, it's clear that it's not so much about the money, as it is about winning. You can take away some pretty valuable lessons from this book.

So regardless of how you feel about the guy, the book is worth checking out. It's no masterpiece (thus my 4 stars), but it is entertaining, insightful, somewhat motivating and instructive, and a very easy read. Definitely recommend.

Book Description

Since its original publication in 1995, Leading with Soul has inspired thousands of readers. Far ahead of its time, the book bravely revealed the path to leadership to be a very personal journey requiring a knowledge of self and a servant-leader mentality. Now, in this new and revised edition, authors Bolman and Deal address such currrent issues as the changing nature of work, the new face of today's workforce, and the greater need for an infusion of soul in the workplace. They also include real-life stories from readers of the first edition, and answer key questions that those readers raise. As vital as ever, this revisted narrative of an executive and his quest for deeper meaning continues to point the way to a more fulfilling work experience.

1 out of 5 stars Saccharine for the Soul.......2007-07-12

First, a disclaimer -- I'm an atheist, so a book that regularly refers to concepts like "soul" and "prayer" wasn't perfect for me.

That said, as a former partner in an international management consulting firm I've had to wade through many poorly written management and advice books. Among those, this stands out for being particularly vapid. The conceit of being a work of fiction that teaches allows the authors to ignore the need for research or data. The fictional account also allows them to avoid taking any repsonsibility for presenting alternate viewpoints or expressing doubt.

Most management books have a theme that could have been confined to a ten page article, which the authors instead run out to 200 pages to make a book. In this case, the messages of "more to life than work" and "treat employees with respect" would have better been presented as a five paragraph essay.

Nice cover photo of the woods though...

5 out of 5 stars Easy Read Business Book.......2007-03-11

Leading with Soul is an easy read. But it has so much to give to the reader. It interweaves a story line of an executive in crisis with business advice rather than just telling war stories. It could be one of those business books that you read once a year. It is a living book that would continually have new insights as you live your life.
For example I participated in an on-line book study at the Work and Worship Institute, and one of the questions I answered was:

Reflect on Gandhi's words we must "become the change that we want to see in the world."

My answer: I think it is critical that leaders role model the type of behavior and values they want to see in followers. It is hard to change other people when you haven't experienced the change yourself. Also by trying to become the change our understanding of the change will we different. The group might still need to make the change but how a change is implemented or the timing of the change can be very different. I work with small businesses, it helps that I bought a business and went bankrupt as I consult with them. I have walked a difficult small business walk. I understand that new change of starting a new adventurer of a small business. I am the change because I have taken a risk.

Obviously you would answer this question differently and I would answer it differently today than I did two years ago. Enjoy this valuable book.

I recieved the latest version of the book. The shipping was within the deadline promised. It is the latest edition of the book. The book itself is of medium quality. It is a new, unused hardback but the finish of the pages is rough. There are pages sticking out from the inside a couple centimeters and (compared with the straitness of the text)the top and bottom of the pages from left to right are uneven. It is obvious this was a cheap reproduction of the origonal and it was not cut right from the factory. When the book is looked at it appears someone or something was chewing on all the edges of the pages inside the book. The hard cover is perfect though. But, seeing as I paid less than 8 dollars for a HARD BACK book and that all the printed text was perfect and more than readable, I really souldn't complain. I am satisfied. The cosmetic errors did not take away at all from the functionality of the book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED SELLER!

5 out of 5 stars I wish all would lead with soul. Great book.......2006-10-26

A parable and an introduction to a personal journey from autocratic and hateful leadership to leadership with soul. This is a book that invites you in and holds you tight as you read this compelling journey. Changing from autocratic leadership to leading with soul is daunting and not many make the journey. My question is what does it take to move autocratic leadership to make the transition. May be the question of the century. If we can move people to this leadership paradigm, we can change people's lives, their family's lives, and create a new reality for the children of this world. Read this book.
