Is George R.R. Martin for real? Can a fantasy epic actually get better with each new installment? Fans of the genre have glumly come to expect go-nowhere sequels from other authors, so we're entitled to pinch ourselves over Martin's tightly crafted Song of Ice and Fire series. The reports are all true: this series is the real deal, and Martin deserves his crown as the rightful king of the epic. A Game of Thrones got things off to a rock-solid start, A Clash of Kings only exceeded expectations, but it's the Storm of Swords hat trick that cements Martin's rep as the most praiseworthy fantasy author to come along since that other R.R.
Like the first two books, A Storm of Swords could coast on the fundamentals: deftly detailed characters, convincing voices and dialogue, a robust back-story, and a satisfyingly unpredictable plot. But it's Martin's consistently bold choices that set the series apart. Every character is fair game for the headman's axe (sometimes literally), and not only do the good guys regularly lose out to the bad guys, you're never exactly sure who you should be cheering for in the first place.
Storm is full of admirable intricacies. Events that you thought Martin was setting up solidly for the first two books are exposed as complex feints; the field quickly narrows after the Battle of the Blackwater and once again, anything goes. Robb tries desperately to hold the North together, Jon returns from the wildling lands with a torn heart, Bran continues his quest for the three-eyed crow beyond the Wall, Catelyn struggles to save her fragile family, Arya becomes ever more wolflike in her wanderings, Daenerys comes into her own, and Joffrey's cruel rule from King's Landing continues, making even his fellow Lannisters uneasy. Martin tests all the major characters in A Storm of Swords: some fail the trial, while others--like Martin himself--seem to only get stronger. --Paul Hughes
Book Description
Here is the third volume in George R. R. Martin’s magnificent cycle of novels that includes
A Game of Thrones and
A Clash of Kings. As a whole, this series comprises a genuine masterpiece of modern fantasy, bringing together the best the genre has to offer. Magic, mystery, intrigue, romance, and adventure fill these pages and transport us to a world unlike any we have ever experienced. Already hailed as a classic, George R. R. Martin’s stunning series is destined to stand as one of the great achievements of imaginative fiction.
A Storm of Swords
Of the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage as violently as ever, as alliances are made and broken. Joffrey, of House Lannister, sits on the Iron Throne, the uneasy ruler of the land of the Seven Kingdoms. His most bitter rival, Lord Stannis, stands defeated and disgraced, the victim of the jealous sorceress who holds him in her evil thrall. But young Robb, of House Stark, still rules the North from the fortress of Riverrun. Robb plots against his despised Lannister enemies, even as they hold his sister hostage at King’s Landing, the seat of the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, making her way across a blood-drenched continent is the exiled queen, Daenerys, mistress of the only three dragons still left in the world....
But as opposing forces maneuver for the final titanic showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings arrives from the outermost line of civilization. In their vanguard is a horde of mythical Others--a supernatural army of the living dead whose animated corpses are unstoppable. As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords. . .

A Storm of Swords.......2007-09-24
This is the third book in the Song of Fire and Ice series. Many main characters are killed and new points of view are introduced.
What was best: The plot had interesting twists and there was interesting character developments. Jaime Lannister seemed to be a generic cad in the first book, somewhat more interesting in the 2nd book and full fledged in the 3rd. Melisandre, the Red Sorceress, you wonder if she might be a flawed ally against the Undead of the beyond the Wall. Jon Snow may have joined the Wildlings at the end of the second book and could be facing consequences from the likes of Alisdair Thorn and Janos Slint(sorry for the spelling I listened to the Audio book). It is realistic in that the good and well intentioned make huge life costing blunders and the conniving coast by on looks and presentation. There is no escapism in this. The new King's Hand, Tywin Lannister, always does what is easy instead of right, and is none the worse. Danyreus is gaining more followers and makes her initial conquests but is unable to consolidate her holdings. Again this is a twist from fantasies.
What wasn't good: Tyrion Lannister is one of my favorite characters. He shines when he is using his considerable intelligence and rolling the dice, in a figurative sense. However, in this book and in the others, he is given abilities with the crossbow, battle axe, and sword. Despite, having his aching legs and recent battle injuries, he wields these weapons with proficiency.
New points of view I'd like to see in future books: Sandor Clegain, Ser Jorra Mormont, Mira or Jojen Reed.
The book is a good long read and leaves enough unanswered questions to intrigue but not frustrate the reader.
I love the books so far! I would give it 5 stars but I havnt finished reading it.......2007-09-20
This series is AWESOME! I love the first two books. I havnt finished this book; however, I have already ordered the fourth book. This book and the others is not for the weak of heart! Lets just say- George R. R. Martin is not afraid to kill of characters. I start to fall in love with a character and before I know it, he or she is dead. It has many plot twists and paraphrasing an underlying theme , "Life is not a song." I'm hoping the series has a happy ending where the main characters are avenged. Anyone who read this book will agree with me- I hope the Freys burn in hell.
Unbelievable.......2007-09-03
It is incredibly difficult to put into words how you feel after reading George RR Martin's work. There are many before me who have written extensive reviews of the books in A Song of Ice and Fire and I feel there is little I could really add or detract from any of them. To put it simply, if you are a fan of fantasy, and I mean from a casual reader who picks up a novel every couple of years or a die-hard fanatic, Martin's books are worth their weight in gold. The story is incredibly rich with detail, history, action and most importantly, intrigue. It is not written in the epic nature of the Lord of the Rings but challenges Tolkien's great work by instead offering a reader a world of fantasy that is startling similar to our own. Martin's realism, proven by his extensive historical research and adept knowledge of human nature, is what raises these books toward becoming classics. Like any other fan of the books, I can't say enough how much you should read them. Do not feel intimidated by their size as you will quickly move through the books once you are entrapped in the stirring stories. Go buy this and the other books.
Hopefully Martin will finish the series within the next ten years...
A great read, despite sluggish pacing.......2007-08-19
All of the comments I made about book 2 apply here as well ... although in this case, even though the book seems more complex and fragmentary than ever, the pacing seems slightly faster, and the amount of gratuitous sex and gory violence is a bit less. Unlike book 2, books 1 & 3 doesn't go quite so far enough overboard on those elements to merit a "Mature Reader" warning.
I think the pacing seems faster because GRRM got busy resolving a lot of dangling plot lines in rather ... ahem ... forceful fashion. Yes, that's a backhanded reference to my comments in book 2 regarding his tendency towards excessively high mortality among his main characters. This book reads like a Greek Tragedy at times.
Anyway, despite the incredibly fragmented storytelling, I still found it to be a gripping and highly entertaining read ... due in large part to the growing sense of depth in some of the main villains**. It's not often I finish 3,000+ pages of books in such a short period of time.
---------------
I like how the author gave added depth to the characters of Jaime & Tyrion Lannister, by introducing nostalgia, regret, remorse, and a latent need for redemption and having a legacy. Tyrion got repeatedly screwed by his own family, no matter how hard he tried, and would up exacting some long overdue revenge. Ditto to a lesser degree for Jaime, who took a refreshingly introspective turn after his maiming.
---------------
Highly recommended ... albeit for patient readers with a longer than average attention span.
[EDIT] Ok, here's something else that bother's me about GRRM's writing style that I forgot to mention in my review of Book 2 - he seems to take undue pleasure in describing people going to the bathroom. Yes, it's a perfectly normal reality of daily life, and we all go to the bathroom .. but he describes it with such regularity that it's almost like he's doing it to make a statement - like he's flaunting his commitment to hyper realism.
I actually remember the very first time that the sound of a toilet flushing was allowed on American TV ... it was the infamous flush by Archie Bunker on "All In The Family". People at the time yelled and screamed and talked like the world was ending. Well, it didn't ... but it definitely paved the way for an ever deepening spiral into unnecessarily graphic (and base) entertainment - which brings us back to GRRM, who, in one scene, has someone get shot in the groin with a crossbow, while they're on the privy ... and he goes out of his way to describe how the person's bowels loosen and empty down the chute into the moat below.
I realize we'll never go back to 1950'ish sensibilities of Tolkien (in which the author created a vast body of perfect 10 fantasy work that didn't incluide even a single needlessly graphic reference to voiding one's bowels or raping corpses), nor should we ... but there comes a point when enough is enough. I think GRRM repeatedly crosses that line at times. Eddie Murphy demonstrated some time ago that although the word "f*@k" is funny, there comes a point when it's possible to overdo it, and it's just not funny anymore. GRRM does the same thing at times in his writing, with excessive references to bodily functions.
I'm still forced to give the book 5 stars however, despite my plethora of pet peeves.
perfect as always.......2007-07-03
perfect but all of his books are perfect. Translation of this books must be really difficult because when I read it in turkish, I hated him and when I read the same book -It was my only english choice in Sarajevo airport- in english I adored.

Book Description
Fierce and proud, the Rigante dwell deep in the green mountain lands, worshiping the gods of air and water, and the spirits of the earth. Among them lives a warrior who bears the mark of fate. Born of the storm that slew his father, he is Connavar, and tales of his courage spread like wildfire.
The Seidh--a magical race as old as time--take note of the young warrior and cast a malignant shadow across his life. For soon a merciless army will cross the water, destroying forever the timeless rhythms of life among the Rigante.
Swearing to protect his people, Connavar embarks on a quest that will take him into the heart of the enemy. Along the way, he receives a gift: a sword as powerful and deadly as the Seidh who forged it. Thus he receives a name that will strike fear into the hearts of friend and foe alike--a name proclaiming a glorious and bitter destiny . . .
Demonblade.
Customer Reviews:
Super Reader.......2007-08-26
Connavar grows up fatherless, as his father died in the weather that gave him a nickname, the Sword in the Storm.
When the Seidh race takes an interest in the boy, a weapon is forged for him. This gives him a new name : Demonblade.
Connavar, because of his upbringing is a troubled and not overly psychologically stable individual, but does have heroic qualities.
A new world from Gemmell, same great storyteller........2007-01-22
Sword in the Storm is the first book in David Gemmell's Rigante series. Mr. Gemmell is most known for his Drenai series, most notably Legend. Mr. Gemmell has a knack for story telling that allows for a solid combination of both story telling and great characters, this book is no exception. Fans of Gemmell will notice some similarities between this book and the Drenai series, but make no mistake they are vastly different books, and series. This book takes more time to develop due to the fact that it's a larger plot and encompasses more people and places.
As with every other Gemmell book I have read this book contains plenty of action. Gemmell is one of the best in the fantasy genre for describing a fight, either a sword fight or a fist fight.
The general plot of this book centers on a young barbarian of the Rigante people. The first book follows him as he grows up into a man who becomes famous first among his own people and then gradually others. It follows his trials, and there are many, as well as his successes. The major subplot of this book is the impending invasion by the people of Stone who are across the ocean. While this subplot does not get fully explored in this book it is quite obvious how it sets up for the second booking what the Rigante will face and the challenges that lay ahead for them.
Again, as with the other books I have read by Gemmell, he has once again created memorable characters. All the characters from Connavar, to Banouin are fantastic. Each character has flaws, they are not all powerful, never do wrong like some modern fantasy characters are. Gemmell's characters have a way of touching some part of the reader, each character serves a purpose as they take the reader through the story. I believe the true strength of Gemmell's books are the wonderful characters and this book follows that mold very well.
As I mentioned earlier, Gemmell is most known for the book Legend and the series that spawned. Fans of that book, and series, will most likely enjoy this as well. However, I feel it needs to be noted that readers should not go into this book expecting the same flow as the Drenai books. This book has a much more Celtic feel than his other books. It's a much more engaging read that requires more attention from the reader than the Drenai books. That's not to say the Drenai books are bad books, in fact I enjoy they quite a bit, it's just they are different than the Rigante books and people expecting the same may be slightly disappointed by that.
I would strongly urge any fantasy fan to give this book a shot. Certainly fans of Gemmell should read this without worrying about it. They will find many things they enjoy. This is certainly a worthwhile read, and I look forward to continuing the series.
Won't be reading number two.......2007-01-17
Following Amazon recommendation I bought this book. I made an exception and bought the whole series. Usually, I try one book and then go for the rest but since the waiting can be grating I decided to buy the series since the book was highly rated.
Typical that I made a bad mistake there.
I found the hero too flawed to be to my liking. I hardly cared for him at all. The story moves along at a decent rate and there are interesting charactesr in it. What ruins it is the main character in my opinion.
I never got engaged by the story, it was often rather dull. I finished it though and started on the second, only to put it down for good after a few pages. I dont think I will be checking out this author in future.
A great start.......2006-06-30
In a next door universe to ours, the Rinante are mountain dwellers, kind of ken to Celtic Highlanders of Scotland. The story revolves around great hero Connovar who is destined to fight for his people against the future threat of Stone (or as we would know it Imperial Rome). I read the second book first a long time ago so I was a little disappointed that this was just 440 pages of set-up for the rest of the series. Though not what I was hoping for (the great war with Stone is in the next book) it is still not boring. Connavar is a very engaging charactor; great warrior, bad son, complicated, conflicted, both parts good and evil; in other words human. His step father is actually my favorite charactor in the book, who tries hard to be a good husband and father to another man's family. The bad guys are not defined very well, it is other Keltoi tribes (and it dose fit in with clan wars in our history). It is all a lot of revenge and blood oaths. But the book is a fast read, very exiting and fast paced, even if it dosn't really go anywhere. But the themes of loyalty, humanity, and responsablity are timeless themes anyway.
A Fantastic New Tale By an Already Great Writer..........2006-03-13
Sword in the Storm by David Gemmell has again started off a riveting series entitled The Rigante. His use of real, flawed characters and swift action intermingled with magic is second to none nowadays.
Connovar, or Sword in the Storm, has had to grow up without his real father. It has been tough, but his flashes of kindness make him a character tough not to hate. His legend grows after he single-handedly defends his friend from a fierce bear. Surviving his near death, Connovar decides to travel across the sea to see the city of Stone. He has heard of their invincible army and needs to see for himself what he will have to face when they turn their sights on the land of the Rigante.
The magic of the novel stems from the land and the people who populate it. A magical people reside in the woods around the Rigante land called the Seidh and they feed off of the land's magic. After saving a young doe in brambles, Connovar gains the attention and help of the Seidh in defense of his land. Whether or not he can keep his promises, large and small, will ultimately determine the fate of the Rigante.
The new source of magic, the wonderful new characters, and the same fast-paced and descriptive action make the Sword and the Storm inventive and fun to read. I was not able to sleep or eat until the last word was read, so I know everyone else will love it. Enjoy!

Customer Reviews:
Yo Ho, Yo Ho, a Pirates Life for Me!.......2007-06-03
This book is great for kids and adults a like. As long as you're a fan of Pirates of the Caribbean you'll love the Jack Sparrow series of Young Adult novels. Don't expect a literary masterpiece, since these were written for kids eight to twelve years in age but Rob Kidd did a great job with a storyline that appeals to both the demographic Disney had him writing for and the adults who can actually afford to buy the book.
I have to be honest, when I first heard about this series I was a little hesitant. It was a book series based on a movie franchise (books based on movies don't have a good track record as far as I am concerned), it's a prequel (even worse of a track record), and it was written for twelve year olds (I had envisioned a kiddy rendition similar to that of Muppets Treasure Island). When I finally convinced myself to give the series a chance I drove myself down to Borders and was immediately put off by what I saw. The books were flimsy pieces of paper, only about a hundred and thirty pages long...How could anything good come out of something so short. I threw the book back on the shelf and went off the find something new, after about an hour of shelf surfing without anything catching my eye I decided just fork over the five dollars and take a look inside the cover.
Man, was I glad I did. The book is an easy read (given whom it was written for) but Rob Kidd does such a good job with the story and he writes Jack Sparrow almost as well as Johnny Depp portrays him in the movies. Yes, the books are short...but don't let that turn you off like I let it do me. Since, every book can basically be called a chapter. Every book is a slice of the same grand adventure. What Kidd probably did was; write an adult sized novel and then slice it into smaller portions for kiddy consumption. So, be warned. This book will get you hooked and youll be shelling out a good deal of presidents to collect the rest of the series.
Commandeer a Boat
Find the Sword of Cortes
Eliminate Captain Torniquet
Acquire Perfect Hat
Become Captain
Rule Entire Caribbean
Live Happily Ever After
This is young Jack Sparrows life plan, and he puts them into action in this chapter of his life story. Sparrow isn't a pirate quiet yet, in fact he despises them. He makes his way from port to port by stowing away on merchant vessels until by chance he finds the Scabbard of the Sword of Cortes (a sword that grants the wielder unimaginable power). He sets sail with Arabella Smith (a young bar maiden looking for a better life) and Fitzwilliam P. Dalton III (a rich boy bored with his pampered and prearranged life) on a battered old fishing boat dubbed The Barnacle to find and make claim to The Sword of Cortes. On their first adventure Captain Jack and his crew meet new friends, make powerful enemies, and of course find shiny treasure.
If you or your child is in love with the Pirates of the Caribbean movies then these books are a must. Trust me, you wont be able to put this book down and if you're buying this for a kid whom 'hates' reading...He (or she) will be singing a different tune after you hand him (or her) this page turner. BUY THIS BOOK! You will not be disappointed.
Gripping!.......2007-05-12
This is the first in a series of books made just for 3rd-7th graders and anyone who likes an easy-read, well-written adventure series that captures the heart of "Captain" Jack Sparrow and his young crew of the Barnacle. This book captures the audience and perfectly establishes their purpose for setting sail, as well as leaving each chapter with the compulsion to read the next chapter and then, wait impatiently for the next in the series. Rob Kidd is fabulous in keeping with the character we've grown to love, Captain Jack Sparrow! As the 1st in the series, this book promises of more great stories to come!
Fun read for Pirates of the Caribbean Fans!.......2007-01-03
My boys really enjoy this series about Jack Sparrow as a teenager. Oh, and I do, too! It is great how the author uses references from the movies. These are swashbuckling adventures with interesting characters!
Good book.......2006-11-22
My 10 year old couldn't put this one down and really enjoyed the story. So much that he wants to keep reading the series. It's an easy read (almost too easy) and a bit short, but still a good book.
Good Book Overall.......2006-10-06
This is a good book for children. It has good content and no foul language. I would recommend this book for 2nd to 4th graders. It has a somewhat large font size and well spaced lines. Some illustrations are included and makes a good read for children. I read at least the first book of a series that I give to children and any individual book. The read is dull for adults because it lacks depth and detailed character buildup. If you want a book with more complexity, go elsewhere. If you want to get your child away from the picture books, this is a good start. I think that they could be a little bit thicker is my only complaint for the level of reading.

Storyline ...........2002-08-02
Since Amazon didn't post an editorial review, here's the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this book is for you: "From the days of knights in armor, the powerful epic of a woman's love and a man's quest for honor and glory .... The Age of Chivalry 1132-1159 .... This rich, epic saga tells of the men and women who lived in the High Middle ages -- re-creating the loves, the violence, the beliefs and forbidden desires of an extraordinary era of human history. Here are the high and the low, the mighty and the poor -- from the rulers of the lush, rich province of Aquitaine to the paupers and beggars who haunted the countryside, pleading for scraps of food. From the rigid traditions of the castle to the free, romantic life of the traveling troubadours, from the privacy of a maiden's bedchamber to the bloody battlefields where the Crusaders met their foes, the Age of Chivalry is richly drawn and vividly brought to life in these pages."
