Book Description

Nicholas Sparks brings back two characters from his beloved bestseller, True Believer, in this continuing saga of extraordinary love. There are few things Jeremy Marsh was sure hed never do: hed never leave New York City; never give his heart away again after barely surviving one failed marriage; and most of all, never become a parent. Now, Jeremy is living in the tiny town of Boone Creek, North Carolina, married to Lexie Darnell, the love of his life, and anticipating the birth of their daughter. But just as his life seems to be settling into a blissful pattern, an unsettling and mysterious message re-opens old wounds and sets off a chain of events that will forever change the course of this young couples marriage.

3 out of 5 stars An Emasculated Male Character.......2007-09-30

Being a published author myself, I tend to review books from an author's point-of-view than a reader's POV, which can be very annoying to say the least. First, I have to say that I did enjoy the ending. It could not have ended any other way. A lot of people want a "happily ever after" ending and sometimes that just can't happen. Also, I found it extremely interesting to read a romance (and that's all this book was) written from the male's point-of-view. Sparks writes in an easy style without a lot of weight to slow things down. On the other hand, this did read as a romance and not women's fiction (big difference there). It was sappy, following many of the rules of romance writing with an exception for the ending. I found myself not liking the characters. The main character, Jeremy, is not a "guy's guy." A lot of his behavior and the things he said were ridicilous. I can't picture any man I know saying the sappy things he said. (What guy asks his wife how her "tummy" is feeling?) Like a lot of reviewers here, I also found Lexie annoying and selfish. I will read another one of his books though to see if they are all like this.

3 out of 5 stars Wish I knew..........2007-09-24

I will try not to be a spoiler, but, I wish I had slightly more of an inkling about the "surprise" ending in this book. I am eight months pregnant and have finished three books in the last month... which says a lot for me. I was so mad and disturbed that I spent time investing in Lexie and Jeremy only to experience the tragic ending that was awfully disturbing to this first time mom to be. As other reviewers have written, I kept waiting for something to happen, and well, I guess it did. I'm just mad I had to be a part of it.

3 out of 5 stars good read.......2007-09-10

I did not realize this book was a sequel when I purchased it. I bought it while on vacation. I thought most of the book was rather slow moving and not really attention grabbing. I am not sure if this is because it was a sequal, and the characters were more fully developed and described in the preceding book, which I did not read. I thought the book was going to be very precitable, but the ending really shocked me. I should have seen it coming, having read other Sparks books, and the endings usually are really good.
For a book that I had a hard time picking up at first, I have to say that by the end I had a hard time putting it down.

2 out of 5 stars Read 'True Believer' first if you want to know what's going on........2007-07-04

I didn't realize that 'At First Sight' was essentially a sequel to True Believer. Right from the beginning, it rang hollow with me and the characters didn't seem very well fleshed out. I frankly had a hard time accepting why this great guy from New York would give up his fabulous life for a woman like Lexie. She was irritating, high maintenance, childish, bratty, selfish- and the list goes on. I just couldn't envision their relationship, and from the plot line, evidently, his friends had a hard time with it too. At any rate, this irritating scenario transpired over many pages, and I kept thinking- "Is there going to be some sort of SOMETHING happening?" because it was really needing it. Needless to say, Nicholas Sparks has an easy-going writing style, and his stories always end up with a cloyingly sweet finish, so getting through the book wasn't a problem- understanding the characters was. It seems as though he was trying to evolve a plot line that just wasn't there. It now, however, makes sense to me that I did not understand the dynamics of the characters or why he loved the woman in this story so much, because I had not read the first book, 'True Believer.' Now that it's too late to go back, I would definitely recommend that a person read that book first, and then maybe 'At First Sight' would hold more credibility and understanding. It started out not making sense, and it ended that way for me. It wasn't the worst book in the world, but I didn't love it either.

1 out of 5 stars Love/Hate.......2007-06-28

As in True Believer, for me the these two just did not jell for me. How does one love in one week, when they spent so little time together? I could not get this story line. I hated the ending. Too tragic. I just have to admit that after reading most of Nicholas Sparks books, I keep hoping he will give us that happy ever after that we sometimes need to believe in. He does admit to writing tragic books and I guess after reading all but two of them, you'd think I would have gotten that already! In A Bend in the Road, the characters do get together and I'm sure somewhere down the road there will be a sequal and one will die! I guess when the end of True Believer ended so abruptly and nobody died, the sequel just had to have tragedy. But I think True Believer and At First Sight could have been one book. Then True Believer would have ended just like all the others!

Book Description

Old man Sibley left his entire fortune to his three granddaughters with one condition—move home for one month. He'd hoped his little scheme would draw his girls closer, but within days of moving in, the sisters were at each other's throats. Neither Wall Street whiz kid Kendra Sibley nor television megastar Quinn was down for small-town living or family bonding. Only shy, sweet Charlie seemed willing to try to make things work.

But even Charlie's gloves came off when her two siblings decided to go after Sibleyville's most eligible bachelor, gorgeous Graham Forbes. Charlie had always harbored a crush on Graham. With her sisters hot on the millionaire cowboy's trail, Charlie is determined to do everything—including unleashing her inner diva—to win Graham's heart.

5 out of 5 stars Sisters or Enemies.......2007-07-30

Set in the small town of Sibleyville, California, with a population if fifteen thousand, we enter the world of the Sibley sisters. Kendra, the oldest, is a Wall Street whiz kid; Charlie, the middle sister, has a Master's Degree in Art History; and last but not least is Quinn, the baby of the family, a television mega star. Three sisters, as different as night and day in every way, from employment, to personality, styles and beliefs.

They have not seen or spent time with each other in years. They are now forced to live together because of their grandfather's will, praying to inherit what they are hoping are millions, for their own individual reasons. One sister wants to start her own business, another has been fired from her job. The third trusted the wrong man. Kendra, Quinn, and Charlie feel as if the two weeks they spend together are an eternity. Their emotions run the gamut from humor to sorrow. Unfortunately, Charlie is stuck in the middle trying to be the peacekeeper.

AT FIRST SIGHT, written by Tamara Sneed, is a wonderful story of forgiveness. Sneed allowed us to laugh, cry, and feel pain and disappointment. She also tossed in a few handsome men, which turned AT FIRST SIGHT into a real party. In future books I hope we hear more from the secondary characters.

5 out of 5 stars A Very Sweet Read.......2007-06-19

This is the first novel I've read by Tamara Sneed. It is a great read! It was LOL funny, and very romantic. Ms. Sneed definitely made you want to be right in the middle of the imaginary town of Sibleyville. If for nothing more than to witness all the comical mishaps between Charlie and Graham. She captured the feel of the small country town, the attractions, the politics, and the sense of community. The main characters were well developed. Even the secondary characters were quite memorable, yet they did not take away from Graham and Charlie's story. Graham and Charlie's story was awesome, you will definitely enjoy the attraction between the two of them. Boy, I thought if they didn't hook-up soon, Charlie was definitely going to be the death of Graham with her clumsiness. Can't wait to hopefully read more about Quinn and Wyatt, there was definitely something going on with them. Overall it was a very enjoyable, quick read!

5 out of 5 stars Good Read!!.......2007-04-30

This book was really good. It was basically about 3 sisters who really weren't all that close, but as a condition of their grandfather's will had to live together for 2 weeks in his old house in order to inherit his money which they thought would be millions. Kendra and Quinn fought most of the time, but Charlie the middle sister tried to keep the peace as much as possible. Charlie is also the one that eventually caught Grant's eye...her sister's never thought she had a chance at all with Grant. Grant really wasn't all that into Charlie either until he statred spending time with her and gettting to know her...then he just fell in love with her.

I look forward to Tamara Sneed's next book which I hope will be about Quinn and Grant's best friend Wyatt. Their story would be very interesting. I think perhaps something happened between them that of course was never mentioned in this book, but kept you wondering why they were so uncomfortable around each other at times. We shall see...I hope.

If you don't have this book...buy it...it's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Love Story.......2007-04-26

This was a feel good book. It was funny and romantic. I love how Graham and Charlie kept crashing into eachother before they fell in love. This book was a beautiful story of falling in love. Reader's will really enjoy this one.

This was a wonderful story about 3 sisters and their competitive nature and misunderstandings about one another. Tamara did a wonderful job with this story about these sisters with humor, drama and love. Great story!

Book Description

In her wickedly funny, outrageously sexy debut, Sandra Lee sweeps us into a magical medieval world of dastardly schemes, daring treachery, and heady passions, where even a make-believe witch can't hide from true love's spell....

Last in a line of Celtic mystics, Golde learned early that witchcraft is lucrative.  Since no man dares marry into her family, she tells fortunes and mixes potions to support herself--even though in truth she has no powers at all.  But lately it's been harder to take the commoners' money, for Golde has developed an inconvenient sympathy for their plight.  Fortunately, the rich, arrogant Baron of Skyenvic is a different story.  Suddenly struck blind, he will surely grant an ample reward for a remedy...and she won't mind taking him for all he's worth.  Now all she has to do is fake a cure and be gone before he realizes her ruse.

Yet Golde's plans go awry when she arrives at the castle to meet the imposing lord and is assailed by both unsettling visions--and unexpected passion.  Soon it seems her deception will have a far greater cost than she'd dreamed...for Golde is swiftly losing her heart to a dark, tempestuous man who has even more secrets than she.

2 out of 5 stars pass this one up.......2001-12-29

Well I was excited when i first read about this book and ordered it. Well now that I've read it I wish I had spent my money on something else. This book left me cold from chapter one. The heroine in this book, Golde, is a foul mouthed, crude, hateful mystic who has been telling fortunes even though she cannot see the future. She agrees to help the Baron of Skyenvic, Gavarnie, the hero who is blind for a price. There is an evil plot and it seems to take forever to find out who is behind all of it. There are some mildly funny parts to this book but they are few and far between. I was really disappointed in this book.

4 out of 5 stars Medieval misfits find love.......2000-10-03

Sandra Lee's uncluttered writing style and fast, humorous pace result in a highly entertaining and thought-provoking first book. Ms. Lee has thrown together a couple of medieval misfits and allowed them to find each other. Look beneath the surface of the characters for the message they are meant to convey. You don't have to be perfect to be loved.

1 out of 5 stars Not very funny. Overrated!.......2000-05-12

I bought this because it was so highly reviewed at Amazon.com but it proved to be a barely passable medieval romance. The lousy heroine out-and-out said that she really HATED kids! The hero always assumed the worst about Golde and immediately proceeded to almost kill her--which really ain't loverlike. What little descriptions of the era could use some improvement by some examples of Roberta Gellis' work.

1 out of 5 stars Big disappointment! Save your money........2000-05-04

The great-granddaughter of the great seer Mimskin, Golde is nothing more than the village con-artist. Sir Gavernie of Skyenvic has lost his sight (& doesn't bother to adjust to it except to bemoan his fate). He is plagued with 3 wild kids, stubborn servants, a pock-marked face (yuck! uuugly!) & selective intelligence.

There were some jarring inconsistencies like: if Golde has a close sister-like relationship with the nobility in her shire, why does she live poorly in the village? And, how did a peasant like her suddenly get real chummy with her overlord in the first place? Also, there were some new words & expressions I found very distracting like "gleet," "swevyn," which really threw me off my reading.

Historically speaking, there are some gigantic pot-holes in this story. The names of people/places don't even sound Norman French or Saxon! (though maybe Slavic?) Also, there weren't enough descriptions of the castle, village, clothing, etc. to give one a firm grasp of a medieval 'atmosphere.'

I bought this book bec. it was so highly reviewed. While humor has its place, it really seemed forced in this story. If derogatory name-calling is your only idea of humor, this one's for you.

5 out of 5 stars A reader from California, February 25,2000.......2000-02-27

I really enjoyed " Love At First Sight" and would recommend this book to anyone who loves funny and sexy romances. I have read a lot of contempary romances that were funny, but it was so fresh to see comedy in a medevial time period. This one's a keeper for me.

Book Description

Allie Parker is dreading Christmas vacation in Thornhill. She'd rather stay at her boarding school than go home, where she'll have to watch her flaky twin sisters and their superficial friends earn their Ph.D.'s in flirting. So when Allie meets cute Ben Harrington on the way there, things begin to look up.

But Allie's hopes for a winter romance vanish when she discovers that Ben--who moved from Thornhill last year--is part of her sisters' crowd. He's a star basketball player who has dated the most popular girls at Thornhill High. Allie writes him off. There's no way he'd be interested in a serious girl like her, anyway. But the more Allie sees of Ben, the less he seems like a typical jock. Is there more to Ben than meets the eye?

Bryden is learning to deal with the permanent loss of his sight when he meets Casey. Unknown to him, she is a guide dog trainer. Despite a strong attraction, when he discovers her occupation he drives her away. The rest of the novel is about his attempt to learn to handle a guide dog and win back her love. I liked this, because there was little pity, but rather he triumphs over adversity.

Description from the book back cover:

'It's my sight I've lost, not my brains', Bryden Moore told the well-meaning friends who worried about him holidaying alone on a remote island off the coast of Nova Scotia. But that didn't stop them interfering in his plans and installing Casey Landrigan, a guide-dog trainer, in the cottage next door. The intention was for Casey to help Bryden come to terms with his blindness. But what no one expected was the attraction which flowed between them. Casey hadn't felt like this about any other man. But Bryden's blindness was the least of her problems ...

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Great Sight-Reading Practice!.......2006-11-10

    First, the positive points:
This book provides a great selection of sight-reading exerpts, guiding you through 24 sequenced lessons that gradually increase in difficulty. Each lesson contains three parts: a brief explanation of a new musical idea or two, rhythm practice samples, and pitch practice samples (which are also set to rhythms). The lessons are arranged into 6 units, with each unit containing review questions and a song for that level.

Be sure to also consider purchasing the Reproducible Companion/CD for this book! This reproducible companion contains many more practice samples, another song for each unit, and (very useful for classroom application)review pages and an assessment page for each unit. The CD contains tracks used for assessment, as well as piano accompaniments for songs in both books.

    Lastly, one weakness:
All sight-singing examples are in the treble clef. Mature male voices are given no practice reading from the clef they will likely use in normal choral singing. This is my only reason for giving the product 4 stars rather than 5.

Forget the year 2000 bug, says Eugene Linden, the world's in for something much bigger than power outages and fouled-up databases. The clues are everywhere, but what do they all mean? The Future in Plain Sight argues that the history of the world is full of ebbs and flows, periods of stability followed by instability. Every now and again, everything changes: the climate, the social order, the shape of the terrain. Linden outlines the nine major indications that the world is ready for another round of instability, claiming that the political, social, economic, environmental, and biological problems we all face today are not as unrelated or as random as they may seem.

Yet Linden actively discredits most doomsday scenarios, which usually seem to blame some outside force for bringing on disaster. In his view, the existing problems will continue to feed upon and exacerbate each other. Crowded cities, for example, put further stress on a sick, polluted environment, allowing diseases to spread faster, while social and political unrest causes native populations to uproot and immigrate to other countries, creating new cycles of poverty, disease, and overpopulation.

Linden doesn't pretend to know how the human race will deal with these issues, nor does he claim to know all the answers. But The Future in Plain Sight tells a compelling and frightening story that deserves to be heard out. --Elisabeth Higgins

    Book Description

For more than half a century, our planet has enjoyed a prolonged period of privilege and stability. Recent decades have seen some of the most extraordinary prosperity in all of human history, and we have come to view this as the norm.

    But what if instability returned?

And what can we do to prevent that from happening?

In The Future in Plain Sight, author Eugene Linden lays out the nine factors that are symptomatic of instability in today's world. They include overpopulation, the widening gap between rich and poor, the resurgence of infectious disease, and the effects of a changing global climate. Linden explores these and other destabilizing forces and tells us what we can do to plan and prepare for life in an unsettled and unsettling universe.

From crises in the world's financial markets to the breakdown of natural systems that support human life, The Future in Plain Sight is a powerful look at what lies in store for us in the coming decades.

5 out of 5 stars And this too shall pass..........2004-01-09

I read one or two of these futurist books a year and I found this as good as any. He has done a good job of categorizing all the things that effect civilization on the planet. As with most of these types of books we are shown that most trends have come out of nowhere and completely unforseen and unpredicted.Of course; there has always been struggles between peoples, natural disasters, major outbreaks of diseases, financial upheavels, conflicts among religions and political ideologies, rich and poor, elimination of resources and species, and on and on.At any point in history when one stops and looks back one sees a string of major events causing great turmoil at the time but as time goes on they all get consumed in the process and progress. However;looking forward always tends to make one think that we have been lucky so far ;but all indicators are pointing at the future as being on a direct path to disaster.Nobody knows what the future will bring ,but if we have to guess,it must be bad.Normally, predictions in books like this are so vague that no matter what the future brings it can be construed to fit the prediction. The other approach is to make the prediction so far in the future that nobody remembers it.A case in point; that the limiting factor for the number of vehicles would be that there was only enough rubber trees to make so many tires,..guess what, we learned to make synthetic tires which ended up better and cheaper.
It's tough enough to predict the near (a couple of years)future, but when it comes to several decades--it' fun to fantasize, but don't take it seriously.
The author thought he would try anyway. So,remember now, he wrote this book in 1998.He came up with the idea of terrorists exploding a home made fifteen-kiloton nuclear device on the outskirts of Las Vegas killing 8000 people in 2006.This caused a crisis that wrecked all the world economies for years to come.
Lo and behold in 2001, just 3,not 8 years;such an event ,9/11 happened and the world's financial systems didn't crumble. It just shows the resiliance of mankind.
Anyway,Linden has really detailed the issues ahead, but the future remains to be seen.A good read nonetheless.Maybe one should put it away for someone to read in 2050;and I doubt that he'll be off in the wilderness ,dressed in a robe, tending his little herd of sheep,on his little self-sufficient family farm. That is, unless that is where he is ,and what he is doing now.

5 out of 5 stars A very prescient,, important book.......2002-08-13

Author Linden's basic premise is that history fluctuates between periods of stability and instability. The last half of the 20th century was stable. The first half of the 21st promises to be anything but stable. The book is tremendously well thought out, and persuasive.

Linden visits nine areas, including climate change, increased population and larger cities, resource depletion, environmental degradation, religious fundamentalism/fanaticism, economic instability, etc. These analyses are then followed by realistic, but speculative, scenarios describing life in the event of the anticipated change. Author Linden does an excellent job in avoiding the Cassandra-style, apocalyptic language so common to writers in this area. Surely, the facts alone are sufficient, and Linden is to be praised for discerning the difference.

All are well done, but I was particularly impressed by the chapter on religious fundmentalism. As Linden so carefully describes matters, this fundamentalism, Christian or Muslim, is a response to the scientific and economic uncertainty of today's society. The true believer yearns to return to a simpler, more certain, time, and is perfectly willing to throw out the baby with the bath water to get it, including equal rights, scientific advances, better living conditions, etc. Anyone skeptical of this statement is invited to consider Iran, the Taliban, Creationism, and the like. I have not found Linden's peer in describing the origin and effects of religious fundamentalism on society as we know it. The whole book is more than worth it for this one chapter alone. Every thinking person should read it.

In short, the book is an outstanding addition to anyone's library. I recommend it very highly.

    3 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!.......2001-05-30

Eugene Linden explains that most of civilization's history has included long periods of remarkable stability, including the last few decades. However, stability is not the norm and indications show it is ending. Thanks to overpopulation, technological change and environmental degradation, profound instability is likely in this century. The clues to future instability are in plain sight. You can see them when you compare what has happened in the past to what is likely to happen in the future.

In the first half of this book, Linden makes a persuasive case for some of his basic predictions, though he is definitely a pessimist. The scenarios in the second half of the book, intended to illustrate what will happen if these predictions come true, are really speculative fiction masquerading as futurology. Still, Linden's basic premise is sound and his warnings should be taken seriously. We... recommend the book to those involved in long-range business planning and trend research.

3 out of 5 stars Where has the faith and hope gone?.......1999-09-16

Good book, nice reading. But... Mister Linder asks us to look for the signs, to recognize them. Well, many other signs are there to be noticed. Signs of the past, actual facts which tell us modern (western) mankind always find reasonability before it gets 'to late'. And why? Because it will cost to much otherwise. Wars ended because of the costs, the 3rd World War didn't burst out because of the costs, and we still use classical natural resources because of the costs. But... the more specialized we get about ww- financial - and marketing processes (the more knowlegde we gain about those issues), the more we'll try (and succeed) to keep that concept alive. And better: to improve and expand. The internet is a great example of that (building a second - virtual - world), but also the Marsian (and other) explorations are. We live in a beautiful era, and it is about time we acknowlegde our accomplishments so far, treasure our goods ánd faults, and give ourselfs to the accummulating evolution we as a species now go through. And this with the most of respect for all that is, and lives. (We are) Gods alike.

    1 out of 5 stars Nothing here.......1999-08-16

This book is less than speculation. The flashpoints of the future cannot be recognized from our current perspective. Throughout human history watershed events are completely unforseen because our frames of reference are always based on current circumstances. Statistically, all human behaviors are quite predictable, thus stable. Financial cataclysm? No way! The stock market is extremely predictable and stable if we shed our contemporary goggles that blind us from the truth. This book is hogwash.
