Penzler Pick, December 2001: In the world of page-turning thrillers, Dan Brown holds a special place in the hearts of many of us. After his first book, Digital Fortress, almost passed me by, he wrote Angels and Demons, which was probably one of the half-dozen most exciting thrillers of last year. It is a pleasure to report that his new book lives up to his reputation as a writer whose research and talent make his stories exciting, believable, and just plain unputdownable.

The time is now and President Zachary Herney is facing a very tough reelection. His opponent, Senator Sedgwick Sexton, is a powerful man with powerful friends and a mission: to reduce NASA's spending and move space exploration into the private sector. He has numerous supporters, including many beyond the businesses who will profit from this because of the embarrassment of 1996, when the Clinton administration was informed by NASA that proof existed of life on other planets. That information turned out to be premature, if not incorrect. (This story is true; I repeat, Dan Brown's research is very, very good.) The embattled president is assured that a rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice will prove to have far-reaching implications on America's space program. The find, however, needs to be verified.

Enter Rachel Sexton, a gister for the National Reconnaissance Office. Gisters reduce complex reports into single-page briefs, and in this case the president needs that confirmation before he broadcasts to the nation, probably ensuring his reelection. It's tricky because Rachel is the daughter of his opponent. Rachel is thrilled to be on the team traveling to the Arctic circle. She is a realist about her father's politics and has little respect for his stand on NASA, but Senator Sexton cannot help but have a problem with her involvement.

Adventure, romance, murder, skullduggery, and nail-biting tension ensue. By the end of Deception Point, the reader will be much better informed about how our space program works and how our politicians react to new information. Bring on the next Dan Brown thriller! --Otto Penzler

3 out of 5 stars Boring!.......2007-09-17

This Dan Brown book was not very good. I just finished reading Angels and Demons (excellent) and was expecting another page-turner. This book was boring and I only finished it because I thought it would get better with the turn of a page. Alas, didn't happen!

4 out of 5 stars Full of Action and a great plot.......2007-09-11

I have read "The DaVinci Code" and that was my first book by Dan Brown. Next, I read "Angels and Demons" then "Deception Point". In my opinion, Deception Point was the best of these great books. The story is full of action which is set during a presidential election, and then the author throws in some unsavory political characters that make the plot of this book very suspenseful. This is certainly an easy read and the writing style makes it an excellent bedside book. Check it out and have a good read.

4 out of 5 stars No one combines science and imagination like Brown.......2007-09-11

Dan Brown knows how to keep readers on the edges of their seats. Deception Point is a fast-paced, super-smart suspenseful thriller that combines real-world technology with Dan Brown's imaginative flair.

Intelligence agent Rachel Sexton, the daughter of an aspiring presidential candidate, is enlisted to take part in a project that will shine much glory on NASA, as the agency will finally be able to prove that alien life exists.

Rachel pairs with pretty-boy television star oceanographer Michael Tolland to discover whether NASA's really on to the discovery of the millenium, or if it's all a huge fraud.

Brown chose the starkest of settings for this book and his villains are vicious, which makes the heroic efforts of Rachel and Michael that much more pleasing.

Deception Point is another thoroughly entertaining excellent example of Brown's skill as a storyteller.

4 out of 5 stars Dan Brown Takes on NASA.......2007-09-06

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has weathered many controversies over the years, most recently when one of its astronauts (Lisa Nowack) went on a mad lover's chase from the Johnson Space Center in Texas to Orlando in order to stop another astronaut's love interest. Although Dan Brown's "Deception Point" uses the NASA setting as the focal point for his thriller, the chase here is of a different sort; in this case, the story focuses instead on the discovery of an ancient fossil found on a meteorite and its impact on a presidential election.

Like many readers, I discovered Dan Brown through the "Da Vinci Code," a book I just could not put down. I'm not sure I would have read "Deception Point" if I hadn't loved the "Da Vinci Code," but I would have missed out. For those readers who have yet to read "Da Vinci Code" (are there any left?) or have simply avoided the book because of all the publicity surrounding it, Dan Brown has much more to offer. This earlier work is probably more representative of his true style, which typically combines a heart-racing plot with high tech gadgetry in a story that somehow involves the government, usually the intelligence community, but in this case, NASA as well.

"Deception Point" combines activities in the White House, intelligence agencies, and NASA all under the guise of a Tom Clancy-like thriller about the possible discovery of a new fossil found on a meteorite sunk beneath the Arctic ice. The controversy surrounding the meteorite centers on its authenticity: Is it real or not? The finding may also determine the results of the upcoming presidential election. Much like Brown's other work, this book combines just enough fact that seems like fiction (mostly about NASA and intelligence agency tools so advanced that most readers will be surprised and fascinated with their capabilities) with a fictional series of events to create a story you just can't put down. The tangled weave of character's lives and events in Washington are also very enjoyable.

With Brown's superb storytelling skills, this is perfect summertime reading. With the inclusion of so much scientific and intelligence detail, you're bound to learn something while reading Brown's book, but will instead feel merely like you've indulged in a guilty pleasure.

2 out of 5 stars Below average.......2007-08-19

I have read three Dan Brown books: Da Vinci code, Angels and Demons and this..although the other two books where average at best, this is just pathetic..the plot is incredibly thin and you can spot the twists from chapters away..something which is rather annoying since you're screaming at the characters who are really for some reason quite dim and require 100 pages to figure out simple facts.. also this book reads like a second or even third rate Hollywood action movie..full of false american notions regarding God, patriotism and many overemphasized dramatic moments..it seems once you make a name for yourself any piece of trash you publish is a classic..recycle this..

2 out of 5 stars The plot elements are just too implausible.......2007-10-09

Brown is such a good writer and storyteller that this book moves along very well until approximately 2/3 of the way through it. At that point, the plot elements became so implausible that it became difficult to read. I am willing to accept a certain level of government conspiracy, but in this book it reaches an absurd height that few would or could ever take seriously.
Delta force, the most elite segment of the American military, is turned into an assassination squad, executing American scientific personnel without a thought. Members of NASA and the government lie about scientific discoveries, convincing the nation that evidence of extra-terrestrial life has been discovered. There is a major evil person controlling all of this, one of the highest people in the U. S. government, they use government resources with impunity and absolutely no oversight. It is so bad that a U. S. military helicopter is used to assassinate a high government official in Washington D. C.
There is also an American presidential campaign in progress, where one of the candidates is also evil, having no consideration for anything other than his own ambition to be president. The climactic final scene aboard a naval research vessel where two of the major characters are rescued from shark-infested waters was the pinnacle in low points. I enjoy Brown's books, but in this case he went far too beyond the precipice of plausibility.

4 out of 5 stars Love Dan Brown, but not my favorite.......2007-09-29

This was a great book simply because Dan Brown wrote it. He has an amazing ability to draw readers into the last few hundred pages of his novels. There was a bit too much scientific information in this one for my liking, hence the four instead of five stars, but this is still a great book.

However, if you're looking for your first Dan Brown read, go with Angels and Demons. It's the prequel to DaVinci Code and is in my opinion his best novel.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book - Good Action - Tricky Plot.......2007-08-19

Deception Point kept my interest, and challenged my mind as I read it. I really enjoyed this book and the twists and turns. It had everything a good thriller needs, bad guys, good guys, good guys that are bad, bad guys that are good, and a bit of a romance (without much actual sex to distract from the plot). I found some of the things in this book to be a bit unbelievable which is probably why I didn't give it 5 stars, but all in all it was pretty realistic and up-to-date with technology and science. I even learned a lot about ice-conditions and research (and some things about NASA and our government which are probably true, but not talked about openly!) I read this book nearly straight through, so it was a page-turner---definetly the sign of a must-read. Dan Brown is a fantastic writer and I think you will enjoy this one too.

4 out of 5 stars "Da Vinci"... who?.......2007-08-16

No doubt (for me :) ) this is the best book by Brown. As the writer has matured, his books have evolved from pretty much a movie storyboard descriptor to a more complex and well managed fiction, more rooted in history and technology. This book presents realistic characters, and notably hinges on a column of the American society, namely the need to believe in the institutions. To read.

5 out of 5 stars You will hold your breath.......2007-07-15

I read this book in about 3 hours, and I think I tried to hold my breath most of the time. Although the escapes are a bit far-fetched, it is still a great plot and a fast read. If you want a book that keeps you reading, this is one of those.

Mirada glacial....

A new Marcia Muller book is always cause for celebration, and in this brooding, melancholy thriller she introduces a compelling new heroine. Rhoda "Rho" Swift is a deputy sheriff in California's fictional Soledad County. She is still tormented by a 13-year-old multiple murder in Cascade Canyon, where two counterculture families and their children were slain by an unknown killer. And when the body of an unidentified woman washes up in the waters off nearby Point Deception and two other local women go missing, Rhoda fears that the anniversary of the Canyon murders has unleashed another killing spree. She's not alone. The scared, suspicious townspeople are wondering the same thing. They're also unhappy that Guy Newberry, a New York writer whose bestselling books have exposed the secrets of other small towns, has turned up in Soledad trying to ferret out theirs. But Rho and Guy have something in common besides trying to learn why trouble has come back to Point Deception: they're both running from their own demons, and even the attraction that's starting to grow between them can't change the past.

Muller's intricate plotting and strong narrative flow have won a dedicated fan base for her Sharon McCone series, and both qualities are on full display here. She's skilled at evoking the landscape and atmosphere of her native California, and even her minor characters (like Wayne Gilardi, Rho's fellow cop, and Jack Swift, her father) are complex and interesting enough that their sketched-in back stories are worth telling. A terrific read from a master of the genre, Point Deception is Muller at her best. --Jane Adams

5 out of 5 stars Gritty, tortured, awesome..........2007-04-10

I've read three Marcia Muller mysteries recently. The first two were from her Sharon McCone series, and I found a later McCone much better than an earlier book. Was I astounded to discover that Point Deception (not part of the McCone series) is an awesome story!

Point Deception is seen through the eyes of two scarred individuals. Guy Newberry is a writer whose specialty is finding the secrets of towns in trouble. But he's pretty much given up his lucrative career when his photographer-wife was killed on a joint story three years previous. Rhoda "Rho" Swift is a sheriff's deputy in fictional Soledad County, California. Rho is still haunted by demons from her first crime scene--the grisly murder of eight people living commune-style in Cascada Canyon. The 13 year old crime was never solved, and the county closed ranks to outsiders. The brother of one of the victims convinces Newberry to investigate this unsolved case, and Newberry is intrigued enough to travel from NYC to California.

Newberry faces many obstacles in his investigation. Many townspeople continue to be spooked by the murders. Some refuse to cooperate with him. The sheriff's department made multiple errors that hindered the investigation, which calls suspicion to them as well. But there are several residents who have secrets to share that may shed light on this case. When Newberry arrives, it looks like another killing spree may have started on the eve of the anniversary of the Cascada Canyon murders. This opens up the old wounds and brings the nightmares back. But it also unleashes a chain of events that will ultimately help Newberry and Swift to solve the mystery together.

It is hard for me to believe that Point Deception is written by Marcia Muller--the same author who writes the Sharon McCone series. The writing is hard and gritty and the characters are more deep and tortured. It's a book I'd expect from Michael Connelly. Muller's husband is writer Bill Pronzini, so it's possible that some of his influence has rubbed off. If I were Muller, I'd start a series with Rhoda Swift. I think she's a much more interesting character.

1 out of 5 stars Point Deception is imaginary and the book is bad.......2006-12-03

This book is my 1st Marcia Muller - and last.

The plot is old '80's hippy drug CA north-coast retread stuff. The worst part is that the local law (sheriffs) are dumber than dirt and 8 people get killed (unsolved - no wonder) and 13 years later (to the exact date ... dum, dee, dum, dum - hard plot BS to swallow) - 4 more get killed - and leave hairs and tire tracks and Nike tracks all over and - our dumb lady Deputy is - you guessed it - DUMB.

Compared to a Robert B. Parker or an Elmore Leonard or a John D. MacDonald or a leCarre or even a Dick Francis or a Tony Hillerman, this author/book/plot/characters/dialog is zero.

Do yourself a favor - read them first - then read something else.

5 out of 5 stars Makes up for less than interesting McCone mysteries.......2006-05-02

Point Deception causes me to forgive Muller her less-than-stellar McCone mysteries, published beginning in 2000. These mysteries were filled with setting and location descriptions, more as if she were the set designer for a documentary on San Francisco's history as a city. This would be okay if you lived in San Francisco or were a lover of San Francisco. For those of us where neither is the case, the books were just boring with no real character development. The books leave one feeling that Muller was just fulfilling contract requirements and had lost her muse.

In the book, Point Deception, all is forgiven. Here there is the Muller of earlier years, with a new female heroine and very little set design description. The interest here is a very complex set of murders, seemingly unrelated. The characters are very well developed and explanatory of all the events in the complex train of events leading to the resolution of all of the murders. Muller as well makes social commentary, which had been missing in her other novels written in the 21st century. Notable is the comment about the local people wanting to be paid in cash, due to the fact that governments were increasingly taking larger slices from lowering incomes with ever decreasing benefits in return. Writers who bravely make much-needed social and religious commentary in a knee-jerk society that swallows all the propaganda increasingly spewed out by all the bought medias are always a delight in a world where negative social commentary is just not "positive" enough to be mentioned. Hail to true social commentary where there is a negativity in the culture that is a fact.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-04-26

This book is the type of excellent work you'd expect from Marcia Muller. I'm just disappointed she didn't seem to follow up and turn Rho Swift into her own series.

I've been reading Sharon McCone for years, but never tried this one out until I saw Rho mentioned as a minor character in "Cyanide Wells." If not for that, I never would've known about her, nor enjoyed such a great read.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A brisk read.......2005-03-03

I enjoyed this book. It was a clever mystery that moved along at a brisk pace. I did not suspect whodunit until almost the end. And I never guessed the name of the killer. My only disappointment was that he did not live to tell his part of the story.

I have always wondered what happened to the idealism of the hippies. Point Deception gives us a tale about a few of the flower children who tried to create their own paradise and failed. It was sad. The effect it had on their families and all the people who just barely knew them was sad. There are no happy people in this book. No happy scenes, no happy endings. No character without some guilt. But there is a promise that life goes on, and that it gets better. Skip it if you are depressed. Otherwise, it is a good read. Mild references to sex, drugs, violence, and child abuse.

Book Description

The Unauthorized Dan Brown Update includes information about Digital Fortress, Angels & Demons, Deception Point, The Da Vinci Code (book and movie), The Solomon Key, and subsequent novels. It's a "mini" book in the sense that it is fairly thin - 96 pages to start with, although it will grow over time. (For example, detailed chapter-by-chapter analysis of The Solomon Key will be added soon after that novel is published.) This is a "meta" book in the sense that it complements, without trying to replace, the many worthy books that are already available about The Da Vinci Code. This book is unique in that it provides a "nimble," timely report on *all* of Dan Brown's activities, including everything that is known about The Solomon Key, "The Da Vinci Code" movie, and beyond.

5 out of 5 stars "The Solomon Key" and Beyond:.......2006-09-10

A must read for fans of Dan Brown books. Included is an e-update on "The Solomon Key" when it comes out - probably Fall '07. This meta book includes meaning of the symbolism in Brown's books. It also includes Brown's testimony (personal, career and background of each book) to the "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" plagiarism trial. In his testimony, Brown also addresses the hidden history of Christianity which raises old issues which The Church may have thought that religious dogma, blind faith and The Spanish Inquisition took care of.

3 out of 5 stars Starting Point for Dan Brown Research.......2005-11-24

If you are an avid internet researcher this book may not be for you. As to the rest of us, this PDf is an incredible starting off point. For those wondering, this is a summation of Dan Brown's career and not a refutation of his work as are most unauthorized books. The author has pulled a number of sources together and then gives you instruction on how to keep up with all that is Dan Brown.

The real value and worth of this will be seen in the future. Using new technology in the downloaded formats the author claims to be able to give updates. Thus making this a constant update to what is going on with the movie and Dan's new book. I gave this 3 stars for its length and the fact that I already knew some of the information. If Mr. Zimmerman can pull off interesting updates then this will deserve 4 or 5 stars. Time will tell on that. If nothing else I give kudos to the author for trying new things in the publishing world. May he start a new trend.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent all in one source of Dan Brown information........2005-10-28

Why waste hours searching to information on the web about Dan brown which may or may not be true when you have such a great wealth of knowledge right at your fingertips. I am excited for the upcoming Dan Brown novel and this update excited me even more.

4 out of 5 stars Dan Brown, The DaVinci Code and even more.......2005-08-25

The appetite for information on Dan Brown, The DaVinci Code, his other novels and novel-to-be find food for thought in this mini-book offered both in hard copy as a pdf download by Fred Zimmerman. (Get the download-it offers a color vs. black and white version, active hyperlinks--and can always be printed out if you insist.) Zimmerman offers insight into two little known episodes of Brown's career: his song writing and his previous 187 Men to Avoid. Much of this book is devoted to an overview of books about The DaVinci Code and what is known of the Ron Howard--Tom Hanks movie version due out in May of 2006.
There is to date scant information on Brown's next novel, tentatively entitled The Solomon Key. But the author does cull the existing sources to point readers off to googling their way through Freemasons, Mormons, Washington's architecture, the Book of Enoch and Joseph Smith. What can you really say about an unpublished novel? The author promises live updates when the novel appears for purchasers of his work. A section on an "Information Launchpad," in particular how to maximize Google's resources to stay absolutely up-to-date, is almost worth the modest price itself. One omission is the author's failure to mention the excellent book and pdf by Betsy Eble, Depth and Details: A Reader's Guide to Dan Brown's The DaVinci Code, that really opened the way for efforts such as this.

Product Description

Point of Deception is a tale of corruption and greed. It resonates at every turn with human frailty and betrayal and ultimately redemption. Victor Storm was a man with a great job and three ex-wives. The only thing he liked better than money was living on Manhattan's Upper East Side amongst the city's power brokers. But as the poet once wrote, "In a New York minute, everything can change." Victor's life goes into a free fall that lands him in the middle of America's heartland and in the middle of a world of smoke and mirrors where nothing is as it seems.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Read...Thought Provoking.......2006-12-26

This is the first work I've read by Yvonne Jacobs...but I hope he's around for a long time. The Storm character is very different from most protagonists- he's flawed, funny and frighteningly convincing most of the time. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good read and doesn't mind thinking upon occasion while they are being entertained.

5 out of 5 stars mixture of adventure, mystery and intrigue .......2006-01-20

As usual and like all Dan brown other novels , I couldn't put it down until the end, its mixture of adventure, mystery and intrigue in 400 pages, I would highly recommended for any Arabic reader who miss reading on Arabic language.
I had issue with some words, it's more of Lebanon dialog while I speak the Egyptian ones.
