REALLY INTERESTING INFORMATION FOR PARENTS!.......2007-09-02
As a pediatrician, I must say that this book is a "must have" for parents. With obesity rates rising among children, this book is helpful in avoidng nutritional mistakes among growing children. I found the book easy to read and follow. AVOIDING THE 15 BIGGEST MISTAKES PARENTS MAKE: A PEDIATRICIAN'S PERSPECTIVE
Good information in easy to understand presentation.......2007-05-12
This book is useful in our home. The informatin is relevant and we enjoy trying alot of the things mentioned in this book.
Great tool to teach children how to eat healthier.......2007-03-10
I am in the wellness industry and give children's health talks to families to help them eat healthier. This book is one of the tools I suggest they read to their kids to help them know what foods to eat or not eat. It even comes with a pull out poster. The children love it and get involved.
Perfect way to introduce children to the concept of Nutrition.......2007-02-09
I purchased this book because I've enjoyed some of the other books by Dr. Sears, and thought it would be a good way to teach my kids about making good food choices. I was expecting a very basic discussion of eating right - the "eat more veggies and fruits" and "stay away from junk" type discussion that we've heard a million times. I was very pleasantly surprised to find the book covering more in depth nutritional topics, like partially hydrogenated oils or refined sugar/flour. But they're presented in a very accessible way that's easy for children to understand. The book also talks about the need to drink plenty of water. The green-yellow-red food organization works well. I'm glad that the book doesn't try to tell you that you can never have treats like cake or pizza - just that that you don't want to eat too many, too often. The book also comes with a small poster that shows the "traffic light foods." We hung it on our fridge, and now both of our children evaluate what they're eating using the Green-Yellow-Red model. The message has really made an impression on my kids. Sometimes when we're in the store and my kindergartener reaches for junk food, I can tell him it's a Red Light food, and immediately he understands and stops asking for it. I'm so impressed. This book is truly an asset to families. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Such a creative concept.......2007-01-12
I love this book!! Trying to keep junk food away from children is like keeping cats away from mice. The concept of using "green light", "yellow light" and "red light" foods is so appealing. Now my toddler (3 1/2) is catergorizing foods and realizing that some foods should not be ingested!!
Good nutrition starts at a young age. More and more children are getting diabetes, autism, and even heart disease at a very young age. Why wait?? to teach good eating habits. Nutrition is the key to a good, long, healthy life.

shows nursing and co-sleeping.......2007-07-03
Unlike most books, this book pictures a mother nuring her baby and a co-sleeper. I am not fond of the cartoon illustrations, but they are not terrible (I usually prefer photos instead). My 19 mo. old daughter loves this book.
For older children learning to go potty........2007-06-13
This book has lots of great info for parents as well as nice pictures, but it's written for older kids who can already speak well and ask complicated questions. It seems like it's aimed toward children over 2 1/2, most of whom are already in the process or done learning to use the potty. I do think the notes for parents will be useful for me.
Great book for beginner potty trainers.......2007-05-14
This is a really great book. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that our daughter was almost done with potty training but regressed a bit for a few days after reading this (The book says it's ok to have accidents, and she was past this point in her training & got a bit confused). Now we simply skip a few pages & she's doing really well agian. I like that in the book the whole family is involved in the potty training & it's not presented in a silly or embarassing manner.
The text is very easy to adapt to our family -- we make it personal to our daughter whenever we read it. The tips for parents at the beginning are a great feature that I haven't seen in other books like this, and there are lots of little extras throughout the story for inquisitive kiddos.
You can go to the Potty.......2007-05-13
This book was not as helpful as I was expecting.
Attachment Parenting Potty Training Aid.......2007-05-07
My husband and I practice attachment parenting and like the illustrations in this book. However, the text is a bit much for our one year old, so we are going to wait awhile before we reintroduce the book. Thinking a child may need to be at least 18 months for this book. Also, my husband commented that they forgot to show the bags under your eyes that are inevitable when practicing attachment parenting. :) Most likely not a favorite for those who disagree with attachment parenting.

School Days.......2000-05-04
I liked this story because it was happy and sad at times. The story was really detailed and I could make pictures in my head of what it would be like in the late 1800's. I learned a lot about Laura Ingalls Wilder. For instance, Mary was courageous even though she was disabled. I also learned that they moved from Minnisota to South Dakota. I hope you will read this interesting book too!

Book Description
This totally new test preparation manual with compact discs reflects the most recent tests and test format. The manual presents eight practice tests with answers, four French tests and four others with listening comprehension sections, which are on the compact discs. The tests are similar in structure and degree of difficulty to actual SAT II exams in French. The manual also features a general review of French grammar and vocabulary, additional practice-and-review quizzes with answers, and reading comprehension exercises.
Customer Reviews:
Prospective buyers beware!.......2006-01-20
I bought this book bearing in mind Barron's reputation for publishing overly difficult test prep material. This book, however, is an exception. The grammer review is not terribly informative and, as another reviewer has mentioned, there are no excercises after the chapters to give practice using the concepts learned.
The practice tests are much easier then the actual test. The listening section and reading passages in particular bear very little resemblance to the actual test. I scored much higher on all of the tests in this book then I did on the actual test.
Do NOT buy this book, it's a waste of money.
Quel malheur!.......2005-11-06
I agree with the previous two reviewers. This book was a disappointment. I took the French SAT II with Listening, and I was not prepared. The blame cannot be placed entirely on the prep book, true, but this book has numerous flaws.
The sample listening exercises lure the reader into a false sense of security. There are very few speakers used, and, after a while, you become accustomed to their accents/voices. On the real test, I was caught off guard and found that I had to listen a lot harder.
The grammar reviews, too, are weak. Some very important and useful concepts are covered, yes, but a lot more could have been done. Additional grammar problems with immediate explanation to cement concepts would have been helpful. There are several spelling errors in the book; some are hard to catch, so beware.
Last, but certainly not least, I shall reiterate: the practice tests are much easier than the real thing. I wish I had practiced with something else instead of becoming confident in my ability to score well. (By the way, in this book there is a mistake in the instructions for calculating the score range: one bit says to multiply rather than to divide a number.) I'd suggest taking the practice tests in the book under very test-like conditions: low on sleep (you know it!), uncomfortable chair, no rewinding/stopping of CD.
I've heard that normally Barron's review books are pretty good, but I'm not so sure I'd put my trust into one after this experience. All complaints aside, this is the only SAT II French with Listening review book I could find, and it's better than nothing. Just don't trust it too much, and be sure to do plenty of outside preparation.
Ehh..........2005-10-11
This book was not what I expected from Barrons. Usually Barrons is over-detailed which makes you know even more than there really is on the test. However, this French book did not have a lot of vocabulary that was present in the real SAT subject test and their practice tests in the book were a lot easier than the real SAT II. I got a 740 on the French SAT II...but still...I think I could've done better with a more thorough book.
A waste of time and money........2003-05-03
I wanted to prepare for the French SAT II subject test, and I purchased this book because most of Barron's test prep books are excellent. But I had several problems with this book. First, there is no scaled score conversion table in the book. Also, the practice tests were not at all like the actual SATII in length or difficulty. The real SATII I took was much more difficult, and although it too had 85 questions, the test took me almost twice as long to complete.
A good alternative to this book is the one put out by the College Board, which includes real, recently administered, SAT II tests. The practice test provided is much more indicative of the actual length and difficulty of the test, and it comes with a scale score conversion chart so you can see how well you would do in comparison to other high school students.
Customer Reviews:
I was thrilled but my young teens couldn't stand it.......2007-06-27
I heard the author when she was a guest on a local radio show and I was so impressed with her concept and personality. I thought it would be perfect for my young teens. I didn't think twice about spending the money to buy what I thought would be funny, and educational, CDs to listen to in the car. I figured we would all enjoy it. Well I was very disappointed because my children couldn't stand the style of it. They thought it was really dumb. My young teen said, "The jokes weren't funny, her voice is irritating, the way she says thing is irriatating and it seems like she is talking to a 2 year old." I think it comes down to style and taste, but in the case of my kids, it wasn't a fit. I regret having made the purchase now.
Oh dear, where to begin... .......2007-05-19
This is one of the most bizarre teaching sets for learning vocabulary I have ever seen -- or heard I should say. You have to have the right kind of personality for this. It's lewd, somewhat crude, but does work for the right individual. Auditory learners would benefit best from this set, but I suppose others might get something out of it.
Parents beware! The set has it's moments; however, it's nothing too outrageous for the typical teenager. If you want them to know their vocab., this might work for them. This is a nice starter for the resistant teen who doesn't like to read. Cartoon Vocabulary (volumes 1 and 2) are also fun.
Learning vocabulary for the SAT, GMAT, etc., is not one stop shopping. People assume there is just one book. There isn't. To perform well, you must study from a variety of sources -- unless you are naturally inclined to do well on standardized sets. And if that were the case, you wouldn't be buying this set.
If you want to become a master of standardized vocabulary tests, purchase the Wordsmart Interactive CD set. Volumes A-J will rocket you towards the PHD level. It teaches you decoding techniques, Latin roots, Greek roots, tons and tons of words, etc. It's a very powerful set if you're motivated to do it. They are very pricey. However, if you want to go Ivy League, the set will help you do it.
Overall, learning vocabulary is a process. You must learn it from a variety of sources, not just one.
Very tasteless and not for middle school.......2007-03-24
I agree 100% with the reviewer Leanne ("Way Too Scary Vocabulary") I was so excited to find a product that appeared to be a fun, hilarious, family-friendly way to expand my children's vocabulary. I started playing them in the car for my son (9) and daughter (12). The words were not too difficult for them, but the material on the CD got very embarrassing for me as it seemed that every other word was related to the author's dating/sex life, or just sex in general. My kids said that they only remembered the stories and not the words. After going through the first CD, I was ready to quit and even my kids agreed that the poems and remembering devices were totally inappropriate. I got more and more anxious with each new word introduced because of the fear of more salacious content to censor. I listened a little further than my kids and thank goodness I quit when I did because she started talking about this date she had in high school where she was getting amorous with a guy who was loaded on drugs at the beach! I guess I'm like my kids because I don't remember what word she was trying to teach us, but I sure remember the story. When the other reviewer wrote to challenge the author, Ms. Mazur replied that she doesn't think the content was any worse than what is on television - well, she's right, but television in 2007 is a whole lot different than "I Love Lucy." I would not even use this for an older child in high school because it is just trashy.
Instead of listening to this CD, I'm just going to continue to read good literature to my kids aloud. As a person who never wastes anything, it kills me but I'm throwing this CD away - it's not good enough to give to the Salvation Army.
Irritating.......2007-03-06
This product should not be marketed as a prep for any graduate school tests. I bought this set to study for the GRE and found that I could not use it as a study aid for more than ten minutes because Mazer's voice and anecdotes proved to be so irritating that they seemed condescending to me. These CDs may be helpful and enjoyable to young high school students studying for the SAT or ACT, but adults and college students should stay away!
Need more media like this product - very creative approach.......2007-01-10
My daughter, a junior in high school, has a 40 minute commute to and from school each day. This driving time really cuts into her study time. In an effort to help prepare for the SAT I searched for a form of media that she could listen to during her commute and that would help prepare her for taking the SAT. The only real resource I found was this CD, Not To Scary Vocabulary. I took a chance and purchased. My selection turned out to be a win with my daughter. She has really enjoyed the casual, informal and humorous delivery of the material. As a family we have even taken the CD's with us on a couple of road trips. I have found my purchase to be a good value and would highly recommend to others. Maybe we can get more material like this produced and download on to their iPod next.

Customer Reviews:
A terrific book.......2004-02-06
I read this book when I was nine or ten. Now I'm reading the Little House novels. But I still remember how much I loved the chapter books, especially this one. It tells about Laura Ingalls and her adventures with her dog, Jack. I got really sad when the family lost Jack while crossing a river on their way to Kansas, and they thought he had died. But I loved when that night, an animal came to where the Ingalls were. It had bright eyes, and they thought it was a wolf! It turned out that the "wolf" was Jack! He hadn't died after all! The book told of lots of other adventures Laura had with Jack. I recommend this book to girls seven to ten. If you read this book, I know you'll enjoy it.
Adventures Of Laura & Jack.......2001-02-03
This book is very, very interesting. My seven year old daughter loved this book. The book is about the dfferent homesteads that Laura and her family had lived and the adventures of not only Laura's, but Jack, her bulldog, as well. This book is bound to keep any child on the edge of their sits with the dangerous experiences that Laura and Jack and her family face. The reader of this book with experience many different emotions from being happy to tears of sadness. I recommend this book to all children.

Book Description
While you are on that big ship, Daddy, far, far away I tell you things. I pretend the wind can carry my words clear across the ocean right to your heart. At times a loved one may be far, far away, but that special person is never far from mind and heart. Eileen Spinelli's lyrical, patriotic text and Rene Graef's uplifting illustrations depicting military families combine to create a reassuring book about separation and reunion.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.............2007-01-19
The pictures in this book are beautiful. The sentiment was sweet too. My 4-year old didn't connect to it at all. He was confused by all the different branches of the military being included and the Mommy being deployed scared him to death! Poor thing just had Daddy leave him. He doesn't need to wonder about Mommy leaving too. We gave this book away..... :(
Great choice.......2006-07-20
I'm not sure if I'll be able to read this book to my baby without crying. Great choice for children with deployed parents.
Good for all branches.......2006-03-10
I just read this book to my daughter, and we loved it. It gives the perspective of three children whose parents are a sailor, an airwoman, and a soldier. It was touching, with the children missing their parents who are far, far away. It's not the best of Spinelli's work, but my daughter was able to see that other military children miss their parents while they are separated, as well. I definitely recommend it to all military families with young children. Perfect for toddlers to early school-age!
You Know You've Been Through a Deployment and Homecoming if You Can't Get Through The End of This Book!!!.......2005-09-02
This book is amazing. The illustrations are so beautiful, and the emotions very real. The author captures the feelings without being overly wordy or sappy. Very well written.
Since this book was so special to my children (and me) during my husband's last deployment, I've shared it with other friends' families during their deployments, and also with my children's teachers to read in their classrooms. They've all given it rave reviews. The teachers especially wanted their own copies to be able to read to the military children in their classes each year, since deployments are routine in our neighborhood.
A Touching and Timely Book.......2004-05-01
Our world is facing uncertain times to say the least. In many cases, those who are paying a great price during these times are the young children of the soldiers stationed overseas. Eileen Spinelli, wife of author Jerry Spinelli addresses these young people and the issues they face in her book WHILE YOU ARE AWAY. The book tells of a variety of young children who will do various things to remember their parents serving in the military until Mom or Dad returns home again. The soldiers are both fathers and mothers and the children are various races and nationalities which gives the book a broad appeal. Renee Graef's beautiful illustrations add to the charm of this timely book.
This book is a must for the children of our service men and women as they cope with an overwhelming situation in their young lives, but will also help other young people understand the challenges facing many of their neighbors, classmates, and friends. We should be thankful such a book has been written, but let us also hope that the situation our world finds itself in may be resolved quickly so that this book can be outdated very soon.

Book Description
Earth Day is on the way, and Ryan, Luke, and Carly have a plan. If they manage to collect and recycle 5,000 aluminum cans, they can make enough money to buy some beautiful flowers for nearby Gilroy Park.
CAN they do it?
Counting the cans gives Ryan, Luke, and Carly -- along with readers -- a lesson in place value. And facts about recycling throughout the story will help readers understand how important it is to take care of the earth.

The kids LOVE it.......2007-06-28
My kids LOVE this book even though they are younger than the recommended age. Easy to follow story goes well with the math. Teaches how even kids can help clean up the earth. The kids ask for it to be read over and over again!

Inside this book you'll find Laura, Mary, Baby Carrie, Ma, Pa, and their faithful bulldog, Jack. From helping Ma gather food in the garden to watching Pa play his fiddle, now you, too, can be a part of Laura and Mary's happy days in the Little House in the Big Woods.
A playtime package for young Little House fans: six full-color paper dolls made of durable and sturdy card stock (Laura, Mary, Ma, Pa, Baby Carrie, and Jack the bulldog); several easy-to-detach and authentic outfits for each character; two full-color pull-out scenes (a cozy room inside the Little House and the garden outside); a special pouch to store everything; and the complete text of Winter Days in the Big Woods interspersed throughout the book.
Customer Reviews:
We liked it!.......2007-01-10
I bought this for my 7 year-old daughter for Christmas. She really liked the dolls, and we thought the backgrounds and the pockets for the dolls were great. The only problem is that even though the dolls are punch-outs, the clothes have to be cut out very precisely with scissors, so she needed a lot of help with that.
Need to cut out.......2006-09-04
I'm not sure why the description says "easy to remove" clothes, because I had to cut everything except the dolls out. Maybe they meant easy to remove from the dolls, or maybe I just got a bad lot! But I had no idea I was going to have to cut everything out in order to use it! My hand is hurting! It's a cute set but also a little flimsy (while punching out the dolls a couple of them tore on the tabs).
Lots of fun.......2006-01-06
I gave this to my granddaughter on her 5th birthday. Her mother had already been reading her the primary Little House books. She was a big fan of them so she was thrilled to get the paper dolls so she could act out some of the stories she had been hearing.
This probably wouldn't be much fun for a kid who had not heard the Little House stories or a kid who has no imagination. But for my granddaughter, it was the perfect gift!
Wonderful Little Girl Play Day.......2000-02-19
The Big Woods Collection of My Book of Little House Paper Dolls is a charming and endearing set of paper dolls and props. You can either be inside the log cabin or outdoors in view of it. Either way, it will provide an afternoon of delight for any little girl
