Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

A fun read.......2007-08-05

A little girl named Treva tells her story wen she had trouble with trolls. She lives on the slopes of Mount Baldy and was hiking it to visit her cousin who lives on the other side. With her is her dog Tuffi. Trouble happens along the way as a troll will jump out and declare "I want dog"

She tricks them into taking pieces of her clothing but eventually she reaches the top and discovers they still want the dog. She declares she can fly with her skies but needs all her cloths back. She asks for a push but they can't since they are holding Tuffi. She offers to hold the dog and away she skis to the cries of "Dog, Dog, Dog!"

This is a fun little story and my little girl has taken to it. Probably because the artwork is very good!

There is also a small side story of a hedgehog who wanders into the home of the trolls.

This is a sweet well written and drawn story that will make for any child's bedtime reading. Be prepared to hand over the book so the pictures may be viewed.

How To Outsmart Trolls.......2004-11-25

Treva lives on the slopes of Mount Baldy. One day she goes to visit a relative on the other side. She will climb up with her dog and then ski down the other side. But on the way up she runs into the trolls. Each troll she meets is interested in her dog. Treva manages to trick each of them into taking some of her clothing instead (mittens, hat, sweater, boots). But just at the top the trolls decide they still want the dog. Treva has one more trick up her sleeve and winds up same with her dog and all of her clothing. The ultimate fate of the trolls is quite interesting.

This is a very nice story with an intelligent and quick-thinking protagonist. Troll legend has been change a little. There is no mention of the trolls wanting to eat the dog (a la Billy Goats Gruff) but instead to help warm them and act as a pack animal. Their fate is also one I am unfamiliar with. Many stories have trolls turn to stone in the sunlight but this transformation is quite interesting.

The illustrations are just what you expect from Jan Brett; beautiful and packed with detail. Earrings and hair ribbons should be paid attention to as well as the happy hedgehog who invades the trolls' home. A truly delightful story from an author who has written more stories about clothes than you can imagine (The Hat, The Mitten, Armadillo Rodeo, Etc).

WOW, don't hesitate, read this book.......2003-10-29

As parents, bibliophiles, and teachers, we are always on the lookout for good children's books and books with positive girl characters are always needed. This one is fabulous. Treva is smart, creative, courageous, loving, strong, competent and clever. This is exactly the kind of child that we would want our 2 1/2 year old son to be exposed to. It's a fun adventure story that shows how a child can be creative and use their imagination and other intellectual abilities to problem solve and come up with a plan in a tough situation (without resorting to physical force) and then use their physical and creative skills in executing their plan. The last few sentences of the book also add a more abstract, creative idea that expands the depth of the book depending on the age and abilities of the child who's hearing the story. The illustrations are well done - they're good and easy to follow and help the child to understand the story, They also provide additional details and threads for the child to explore. And, something I'm always on the lookout for, it was a great alternative troll story. On the chance that most of his fellow schoolmates would be talking about pirates, superheroes, fairy tale characters and such, I didn't want my son to have no idea what others were referring to simply because we tended to avoid such stories because they tend to be completely objectionable in terms of their values and characters. So, I'm always on the lookout for good alternatives, and this was a very positive way to introduce him to a troll. (As a side note, a good alternative for superheroes is "Max" by Bob Grahm; for pirates try "Pirate Pete", "Edward and the Pirates" and "Pirate Pink"; and there are many fractured fairy tales which are clear winners over the traditional sexist, violent, etc fairy tales, e.g. "The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig", "Wolf" by Becky Bloom, "The Big Bad Wolf is Good", "The Emperor [Penguin] has no clothes", and on video - CinderElmo - where Elmo goes to the Princesses ball). This was my first exposure to Jan Brett and I'm looking forward to more books.

A delightefull tale of an adventurous hike.......2003-10-08

Treva, a girl in Norway wants to go visit her cousin on the other side of a mountain near her home so off she goes with her dog, and her skis straped to her back. Her little hike soon meets with excitement when a troll tries to kidnap her dog! She comes up with a clever scheme to trick this troll, and several more trolls afterwards. At the end, she manages to trick all the trolls again at once, and gets back her mittens, gloves, hat, sweater, skis and of course, her dog!

The illustrations are absoutely beautiful, and really bring life to the story.

This book Trouble With Trolls is a great book for both readers young and old. It is about a girl named Treva who decides to take a hike over a mountain to see her cousin. On the way up the mountain Treva runs into some trolls who want her dog,but she tricks them by giving them her boots and things like that. In the end she gets away with her dog and all her stuff back. I enjoyed this book alot myself and if you have kids I'm sure they would enjoy it to.

This book is full of profoundly moving stories, both heart-rending and heart-warming, and it is beautifully photographed. Another book of happy endings..........2007-01-05

I purchased this book along with "Found Dogs: Strays Who Landed On Their Feet" and I enjoyed the happy ending stories just as much. As an employee at a local rescue group, I get to see on daily basis the many unhappy endings of strays. This book was a nice break from the many unhappy realities facing strays.

I originally bought Found Dogs : Tales of Strays Who Landed on Their Feet and fell in love with the book. One of our kids Miles is a rescue dog and I can definitely relate to the stories in that book and this sequel.

This book is twice as big as the first and the stories are just wonderful. The stories are pretty much everyday people telling their tales of giving dogs a second chance at a great life. It made me feel great to know that there are others in this world who take care of their dogs as much and sometimes as nutty as my husband and I do :). If you've got a furry friend, this book is SO worth it - another 2 paws up from this pack!

The stories in this book are wonderful. The various backgrounds from which the dogs came from are heartbreaking, but the 'second chance' portions of these stories are very heartwarming. Every animal lover should read this book.

give this poor dog a bone.......2007-09-02

This is a fun, sweet, and eventually poignant story, and an interesting account of the startup of the three dog bakery. I loved to hear about Gracie, and she sure makes the idea of a Dane tempting (I've got GSDs myself). What I couldn't figure out though, was why the emphasis on feeding this poor dog whole wheat flour, fruits and veggies. The author talks about poor Gracie potentially starving to death, while he searches for the perfect "nonmeat, nonchocolate, nonsalt, nonsugar ingredient" and discusses carrots, spinach, bananas, apples, pears, etc. And I'm thinking -- why nonmeat? I mean, dogs are carnivores, after all. Why not give up on the pears and hand this starving dog vanishing into thin air half a raw chicken and see what she does with it and how she makes out?

Perhaps because my dogs are raw fed that I am so puzzled by the non meat reference. They do eat a few Castor and Pollux organic chicken cookies on rare occasions (we don't have a Three Dog bakery around here) but the first ingredient even of those is chicken liver, not grain flour, which I can't honestly see how dogs could need or want, for that matter. I'm glad Gracie survived, and more power to Dan and Mark for their incredible business success, and Dan's dedication to keep Gracie going one pan of cookies at a time. But after reading this account of feverish and desperate mixing and baking and substituting ingredients (long before they even had the idea for a business), to keep Gracie fed, I kept thinking how misguided the effort, how much easier and more natural it is just to raw feed and why Dan didn't consider giving her a nice raw meaty bone instead of searching for the perfect "nonmeat" ingredients. I still don't understand that. Later he does talk about baking vegetable beef biscuits, but it still seems to me if I had a starving dog I'd cut a chicken in half -- or for a dog that big, perhaps a whole chicken, and just feed her naturally. Better for her, and so much easier. But apart from that, it's a great tail. I mean tale :)

Humorous Dog Story.......2007-08-16

This book is hilarious and very well written. Dan Dye describes the scenarios with such perfect pitch that I found myself laughing out loud throughout the book. He artfully describes his mis-adventures while raising an almost blind and deaf Great Dane puppy and the people that he comes to know and understand while doing so.

I have given as presents at least ten copies of "Amazing Gracie: A Dog's Tale". It is such an inspirational and heartwarming story. I will forever be grateful to Dan Dye and Mark Beckloff for sharing the story of Gracie with us. Because of Gracie, they started the Three Dog Bakery, a gourmet food store for pets. Through Three Dog Bakery, Dan and Mark have helped raise money for many homeless dogs. In today's world, it is nice to know that there are people like Dan & Mark.

Sweet Story...........2007-03-06

A really Sweet book about the kind of dog we would all like to have, and the kind of story we all like to hear. A dog noone wanted turns out to be the best dog....smart, loving,protective....I read this in two days because I couldn't stop reading it....I loved the illustrations in the book, they are just as amusing as the story. You will probably shed a tear but it is more a happy story than sad. Like they say....the only thing wrong with our canine companions is they they don't live long enough. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

New possibilities for old problems.......2007-02-02

Showing a sense of humor, Dr Dodman describes his experiences with a variety of problem behaviors in a pleasant, fun read. At first I was extremely skeptical of using drugs to solve behavior problems, but I decided to give Dodman a chance. In each case he analyzes catalysts and contributing factors to the behavior being discussed as well as the biological background. I felt he used a very well-rounded approach, suggesting liefstyle changes (diet, exercise, management), behavior modification, training, and sometimes drugs. Not every case involved drugs, and those that did often were for short term use only. What I found most insightful, however, was Dodman's analysis of various aggressive behaviors, their basis, and how they're acted out. He very clearly differentiates between dominance aggression and fear aggression, providing precise and various examples of each. Overall I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who has a problem dog. Even if you don't go the drug route you'll still learn a lot about your dog and his/her problem(s). The only reason I'm giving it 4 out of 5 stars is because it's a rather dated book (1996) and doesn't cover some newer therapies.

insightful. canine behavioral problems by section........2006-11-25

this book is easy to read, at times humourous, and provides some good knowledge to dog owners who are into the behavior science part of dogs. i will outline how the book is styled.

the book breaks down behavioural problems into 3 main category:
1. aggression
2. fear
3. obsession

5 chapters under the aggressive probems deals with dominance (dog-owner aggression), rage syndrome, territorial aggression, dog on dog aggression, dog aggression to babies.

for fear related problems, each chapter would deal with separation anxiety, fear of thunder, geriatric aeparation anxiety, phobias and fear of strangers.

the obsessive section deals with tail chasing (esp in bull terriers), shadow chasing, persistent licking and incontinence.

each chapter is written very much like watching an animal planet documentary. dr dobson would tell you a little bit about the kind of problem, then use real life examples to tell you how he treats the behaviours shown in these dogs.

it is easy to read, sometimes humourous, and quite matter of factly written. at the end of each chapter, he would conclude the chapter with a "treatment for" summary. the summary notes down in point form treatment/s for each chapter's problems.

i think this book covers all the usual behavioural problems in dogs that we face. some of the chapters was written is a fashion that is much like the tv series "house" (a persoanl favourite), so it's quite exciting and entertaining.

the only downside to the treatments suggested is that i find dr dobman's like for using drugs for treatments. noting that he may be doing these for badly affected dogs seems like a good idea, especially when all courses of treatment has been done. this seems to be the case for the book as he dwells in only the worst cases. this might lead to the reader thinking that one MUST use drugs for treatments. well, if it comes tothe end, if drugs have to be used and it has little side effects, why not? they are increasing being used in treatine human psychological problems anywways.

generally, a very good read and anyone interersted in canine behaviours should have the full repertoire of the more common canine behavioural problems being dealt with here.

I found this book both informative and a pleasure to read. I wasn't doing research for a thesis so I found the his style of writing very pleasurable. It seemed as though the cases presented were a last resort and education and understanding were the order of the day. There is so much we do not know about canines. If some meds can help the dog defeat a problem behavior I see it as a win-win situation. I doubt that the dog is happy in his current state either. I'm presently involved in opening a "no kill" shelter in my area. I wish Dr. Dodman could open a satellite office near us. I know we are going to be dealing with tons of cases just like those noted in the book.

I've read the other two in the series and I finally got my hands on this.

I'll keep this short.

Ben and Ned are back and for a whole lot more adventures. The story drew me in and had me turning pages. I finished the book in one day. If you loved, or even liked, the other books in the series, then this book will not disappoint.

Ben and his dog, Ned, survived the destruction of the Flying Dutchman years ago. Spared the doom of the ill-fated crew, these castaways were still affected by the avenging angel's curse--they live forever without growing a day older. Constantly on the move so no one detects their ageless nature, they roam the earth together. Due to the angel's benevolence, Ben and Ned can communicate with each other through thoughts.

In "Voyage of Slaves"--the third book of the series--Ben and Ned are adrift in the Mediterranean Sea when they are accosted by pirates. The cruel men toss the black Labrador into the ocean and take Ben to Al Misurata, a slave trader feared along the Barbary Coast. He keeps Ben for his knowledge of languages.

Meanwhile a traveling troupe of performers finds Ned and nurses him back to health. They make him a part of their traveling show. When Al Misurata drafts them to entertain, Ben and Ned are reunited. But their happiness is short-lived. Al Misurata takes them all to sea, and they soon realize that the Rizzoli troupe have been tricked and will be sold as slaves.

Ben wants to save his new friends, especially the beautiful girl, Serafina. But Al Misurata and his ruffians remain determined to succeed. The rest of the story ranges from seafaring adventures to perils on land where Ben and Ned encounter benefactors and villains. They must use their wits to survive and pray for good fortune as they try to outsmart their adversary and free the entertainers from a horrible fate.

"Voyage of Slaves" provides rough and tumble adventure for young adult males, though girls will enjoy the story, too. Set in the early 1700s, Jacques brings the nautical past to life with its harshness, dangers and glories. The bond between Ben and Ned resounds with poignancy and humor and will be appreciated by anyone who ever wished they could communicate with their four-legged childhood friend.

In "Voyage of Slaves," Jacques's cast of characters who befriend Ben and Ned is well-developed and diverse. The antagonists are intriguing and evil, yet believable. The author provides a compelling yarn where good triumphs over evil. Young adult "Redwall" fans will want to read this series, too.

Best book of the three so far.......2006-11-01

At last, a pretty good book by Brian Jacques on his series, Castaways of the Flying Dutchman. I found this book to be pretty entertaining and fun to read although there's a pattern developing here that began to look pretty redundent. In this book, our eternal young Ben and his dog, Ned got themselves captured by Barbary pirates and spent most of the book trying to get away from them and at the same time, trying to save his new found friends who he would have to abandoned anyway. The book have Ben and Ned virtually being passed on from one benefactor after another as they are led to safety and toward danger at the same time. Ben also learned a new aspect of this angelic curse when he realized that a love of a girl will be one thing he would never have for long since he have to keep on moving by angel's command. Since the story take place a lot on the sea, the curse of the Flying Dutchman and her crew remains always in the distance as they continued to haunt Ben and Ned.

As always, the ceaseless banters between Ben and Ned keep the story flowing and the book is well written enough that almost anyone of any age could enjoy it with ease.

One question I have is, if Ben looked like a 14 years old blond boy but have a life span of hundred generations, will he still act like a boy with such experiences and wisdom built into him?? You might think that by his 200th or 250th year of life, Ben might behaved more like an aged, overmatured wise man who look like a 14 years old blond boy!!

Anyway, any fan of this series should enjoy this book and considering the improvement over the previous two books, fans of the series won't be disappointed.

A Redwall book - and that means fun dialog, great descriptions of feasts, excellent villans and heros, and a few minor variations on the common framework.

You can most likely jump in anywhere in the series, so if you haven't read any others you *could* start here. However, for most this will be a story read along the way, either in order of publication or in order of the timeline posted on the Redwall site - me, I like to go in publishing order. Enjoy!

I loved this book from start to finish, it had a twist having a hero that didn't come from redwall,(Most of them do). It had me on the edge of my seat during the final battle between Tam and Gulo, the characters were great; as always, and it was just, in general a good book. My favorite creatures are squirrels so i loved it,i cant wait to read the next redwall book!

Often a new take on a beloved favorite is doubly appealing due to the familiarity of the piece and the originality of its latest incarnation. Such is the case with There Was A Coyote Who Swallowed A Flea as it is given a spicy Southwestern flavor.

Youngsters will love the sing-song rhyme and giggle at the ridiculous coyote who considered everything to be dinner. First of all, he ingested a flea which he found on his knee. That's probable. But the hilarity increases when he swallows a lizard that "slithered right down to his gizzard" to catch the flea. Then, what catches a lizard? A snake, of course. Poor, poor coyote, it seems he can't win for losing.

What he finally swallows is surprise that will leave youngsters laughing out loud at such silly shenanigans.

Steve Gray's bold, comical illustrations are perfect companions for this laugh provoking tale.

As a dog lover and a current owner of 4 dogs (2 of whom were rescues) I applaud each and every pet owner in this book and I thank Elise Lufkin for putting these stories together so that they may be enjoyed by the people who rescue any animal or is thinking about rescuing. The joy and love these pets bring into a home is unbelievable.

As the mama of an adopted stray dog from the ASPCA I am very interested in saved cats and dogs,(I have also taken in a stray cat). To me rescued animals are the best pets. The books that I have read are all happy books, there may be a lot of saddness in them, but for the most part they have a happy ending.
Amazon is full of books on cats and dogs, the selection can't be beat!

Whereas many tales of homeless pets end with less than stellar results, this book and its companion book, Second Chances: More tales of Found Dogs, concentrates on the happy endings of many pets who found loving homes. Loved it. The recent movie "Miss Potter" made me want to read these books and give them to my 6-year old. Although I am way passed childhood, it was delightful to read the story and admire the beautiful drawings. Definitely a MUST for children in today's world, where childhood seems to have gone out of fashion.

This story is about a duck named Jemima Puddle-Duck and she isn't able to hatch her own eggs because the farmers wife wouldn't let her. Where ever Jemima was she would get caught and her eggs were taken away. Then one day Jemima Puddle-Duck went looking for a place to hatch her eggs. She saw a forest down a hill and started to run for it. She flew down and saw a stump that would be nice to site on but a gentleman was sitting on it reading a newspaper. So Jemima started to quack and he looked at her. He thought she was lost and asked her if she was but really Jemima wasn't. She told him she was looking for a place to hatch her eggs, so he took her back to his house where he has a place full of feathers that would be nice. Jemima kept going to his house and one day she decided to stay there until they were hatched. The gentleman told her he was going to cook an omlette for her so he told her to go get some supplies. She did and saw a friend and told him the hole story and one day he went to see her at the gentlemans house. What happened at the end of the book? Read "The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck" to find out.

Naturalistic polemic in duck's clothing........2002-05-13

I always had Beatrix Potter down as an avatar of Home Counties tweeness, with her anti-modern paeans to the countryside and de liddle cuddly animals. So the unsentimental brutalities of this story came as a welcome shock. 'Jemima Puddle-Duck' is as endearingly hopeless as her name suggests, unable to tend her eggs in the overcrowded barn she shares with some supercilious hens. She flies over the forest in search of a suitably solitary spot, and comes across a helpful gentleman dressed in tweed, reading 'The Sporting Times'. He is a fox, and invites her to make use of his summer residence, in particular the shed carpeted with the feathers of previous victims. Dazzled by his good breeding, Jemima accepts his offer and visits daily. When the eggs are about to hatch, Foxy suggests she bring along various goodies so they can have a charming goodbye party...

The unremitting violence in this story does not emanate from where you'd expect, and this clear-eyed vision of the natural order of things, of brute force vs. cunning, takes place in the most idyllic setting yuou can think of, a richly detailed rural England, its hills and plants alive and painted in the most soothing colours. But even this balmy backdrop plays out a cycle of struggle for domination, with spiders eating flies, and various other creatures being horrid to one another.

Written at the turn of the 20th century, just before female emancipation, it's hard not to see the woebegotten Jemima as an image of women's fate in a world run by men, both good and bad, with the fox as parisitic aristo in straitened circumstances, and the dog as paternalistic liberal. Indeed, the whole thing plays like an Emile Zola potboiler disguised as toddler fodder. Upsetting, cruel and marvellous.

Scary for younger children.......2001-07-13

This book is not appropriate for children who are too young to separate fantasy from fact. It contains images of danger and death and the main character, Jemima, is portrayed as inept and stupid. I realize that millions of kids have enjoyed this book over the years, but my child will have to wait until she's old enough to understand these concepts and not be frightened by them.
