"Until one morning in mid-November of 1959, few Americans--in fact, few Kansans--had ever heard of Holcomb. Like the waters of the river, like the motorists on the highway, and like the yellow trains streaking down the Santa Fe tracks, drama, in the shape of exceptional happenings, had never stopped there." If all Truman Capote did was invent a new genre--journalism written with the language and structure of literature--this "nonfiction novel" about the brutal slaying of the Clutter family by two would-be robbers would be remembered as a trail-blazing experiment that has influenced countless writers. But Capote achieved more than that. He wrote a true masterpiece of creative nonfiction. The images of this tale continue to resonate in our minds: 16-year-old Nancy Clutter teaching a friend how to bake a cherry pie, Dick Hickock's black '49 Chevrolet sedan, Perry Smith's Gibson guitar and his dreams of gold in a tropical paradise--the blood on the walls and the final "thud-snap" of the rope-broken necks.

Book Description

On November 15, 1959, in the small town of Holcomb, Kansas, four members of the Clutter family were savagely murdered by blasts from a shotgun held a few inches from their faces. There was no apparent motive for the crime, and there were almost no clues.

As Truman Capote reconstructs the murder and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, he generates both mesmerizing suspense and astonishing empathy. In Cold Blood is a work that transcends its moment, yielding poignant insights into the nature of American violence.

Download Description

With the publication of this book, Capote permanently ripped through the barrier separating crime reportage from serious literature. As he reconstructs the 1959 murder of a Kansas farm family and the investigation that led to the capture, trial, and execution of the killers, Capote generates suspense and empathy.

5 out of 5 stars Quite Cold, Indeed.......2007-10-06

It is a testament to Truman Capote's ability that he was able to take a small yet disturbing blurb in the New York Times and not only write a compelling book about it, but create a new literary form, the nonfiction novel, and also turn the story into an American classic. IN COLD BLOOD fully deserves the accolades that have been heaped upon it since its publication.

That newspaper blurb, of course, was about the mysterious murders of the Clutter family (father Herbert, mother Bonnie, and teenagers Nancy and Kenyon) in the small, isolated town of Holcomb, Kansas. At first, it was unclear why the family had been slaughtered and it was thought to be the work of a psychopathic killer. That such psychopathy flared up in America's heartland made the story all the more disturbing. After all, everyone knows all the weirdos and lunatics were supposed to live in New York or San Francisco. To think that they were right in our midst...

Capote's detailed (and controversial!) studies of the murders take us so deep into the story it is like we were really there. Using the techniques of fiction and applying them to a non-fiction story, Capote brings the real life tragedy to life a second time around. This is particularly disturbing with respect to the two men who committed the crime, Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. IN COLD BLOOD probably is the first book of its kind to give the readers such an accurate portrait into the minds and personalities of such brutal killers.

What strikes the reader hard is that, of the two criminals, it is the actual trigger man, Perry Smith, who is the more tender and emotionally vulnerable. That Dick Hickock seems, by every measure imaginable, to be a harsher person than his compatriot is juxtaposed powerfully with Hickock's own complaints that he is the only person on death row who did not actually kill anyone. We now know, of course, that Capote developed some type of emotional relationship with Perry Smith while researching the book and so it is up to the reader to determine how much this might have clouded Capote's judgment and writings on him.

Despite the bleakness of the story, IN COLD BLOOD is written in a very feminine and flowery style. If Capote's homosexuality were not widely known, one could almost assume as much by this. Again, this creates a jarring juxtaposition for the reader, as he is confronted with the darkest corners of depravity.

Anyone who visits the true crime section of a bookstore is confronted with books basically reeking of schlock. A good writer, however, can turn the average, or even below average, subject and elevate it to new heights. This is what Truman Capote did. IN COLD BLOOD is very cold, indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Read the book before the movie!.......2007-10-05

This was a wonderful book, but I made the mistake of seeing the movie and then I had a biased. I enjoyed this.

5 out of 5 stars Capote's Masterpiece Is Full Of Thrills, Suspense, And Incredible Prose.......2007-09-24

When Truman Capote's "In Cold Blood" was published in 1966, it became an international bestseller and was lauded by the critics. Now, over forty years later, "In Cold Blood" remains the crowning achievemt of Capote's career as a writer. Capote's skill as a journalist and natural talent as a writer combine to create the definitive American true crime book. Whether you prefer nonfiction or fiction, Capote's true account of mass murder and it's consequences is sure to please!

5 out of 5 stars As Good as it Gets.......2007-09-19

In Cold Blood is incredibly well written. Unlike many of his short stories, the prose is clean and not overly adorned. Without moralizing, he simply tells the story of one of the most random and nonsensical murders of his time. In my opinion, Capote wrote one great book, and this is it.

4 out of 5 stars A compelling read.......2007-08-23

Because I practice criminal law, I walk around in a world with stories like this one everyday. So I didn't really see the big deal until I finished reading Capote's In Cold Blood. Capote makes a nonfiction account read like fiction. That may not sound like much, but it impressed the hell out of me. Usually nonfiction has a dull feel to it. It just doesn't pop like fiction does. But Capote is able to cut right through that and make this story every bit as compelling as fiction without giving it a corny, Court-TV "true-crime" feel.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Thunders-In Cold Blood BOOK.......2007-01-04

I had the original pressing from the late 80's or whenever it came out-got this version for my sister for Christmas--a great book and accounting of one of my fave guys JT. This is an updated verion as well-my only complaint is the part about when myself and Andy Babiuk (we are in The Chesterfield Kings) brought Johnny up to Rochester, NY to record an album-the reporting is accurate-and the track "Critic's Choice" is the last thing he recorded in the United States, or for that matter anywhere in a real studio--problem is Nina interviewed someone else--and they stated that he was incompatible with us, and we were impatient with him-NOT TRUE. We got along fine musically and socially-the problem was with the guy who owned the studio. He was screwing with JT, Johnny got miffed and the session only yielded one complete song and a batch of unfinished stuff. Nina-CALL ME THE NEXT TIME YOU UPDATE?? 3 out of 5 stars needs more careful research, as well as an index..........2006-11-29

This book is useful for anyone interested in this seminal and influential figure of the American rock music underground. However, the author has the annoying habit of repeating accepted 'truths' that should be related with some scepticism. Case in point; "Jerry Nolan saw Elvis...". Many people simply do not believe junkie Jerry's stories (in one interview he spoke of an informal discussion with Jimi Hendrix, only the time and place he provided were clearly after Hendrix' death). I think Jerry Nolan was the world's greatest rock drummer, but when writing a book, careful presentation of material is in order.
This book also completely omits an index, making reference difficult or impossible. And yes, a book on Johnny Thunders does deserve an index, despite what you might otherwise think.
Hopefully these flaws will be repaired in any future editions of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Only bio of Thunders, and by a very good writer.......2006-08-23

I heard this book mentioned in the new documentary about Arthur Killer Kane, "New York Doll". I had Antonia's book about the Dolls and thought they were fortunate to have a biographer who was a very good writer. Same here. I am glad that someone made a record of the tenderness and vulnerability that had to be at the heart of this artist. Like Frank, Marilyn and Elvis, he wore his heart on his sleeve and we were privileged to be there for it. One of the very few guitarists from whom you can hear a few seconds and know instantly who it is.

You should see that DVD, and also "Thunders, Kane and Nolan", a concert in 1987 when, I believe, Johnny was comparatively clean. That is the only Dolls reunion you will need.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Biography - A great read even if you aren't a fan.......2006-03-12

Nina Antonia is a fantastic writer. I read through the 200+ pages in a day.

What I most enjoyed about this book is that it made Johnny out to be human - something no other press/media outlet acknowledged. Throughout the 80's he struggled valiantly against his addiction, only to fail. But never for a moment did he stop missing his children, regretting the time he spent away from them. This book doesn't try to sanitize his life. It details the depths of his addiction, his failures and lost opportunities. However, Nina also talks about the hope that he found later in life.

There are dozens of photos throughout the book - my favorite of which is a picture of a sober-looking Johnny and his girlfriend pushing their child in a stroller. It says a lot about the man: However strung out and wasted he could get, in his heart he was just a normal guy. It's too bad he became a parody of the thing his "fans" wanted him to be.

He was one of the very last of a breed of Rock 'N' Rollers that we will never see again and a presence as powerful as his will be sorely missed.

We miss you, Johnny.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book - Long Listen.......2007-09-10

This is a great classic but you have to devote some time to listening to the CDs, as you would to read the book. Can't complaint about the convenience though; ability to listen to the CDs while driving, at work, at home, etc. is wonderful. If you haven't tried an audio book yet, do so, you will find it to be quite an experience!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellence!.......2007-01-18

I have always been a Scott Brick (Narrator)fan. Now I am also a Truman Capote fan. I can not recommend this book enough. After I listened to this masterpiece I rented the movie "Capote". It was also a great experience.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the read, or in my case, worth the listen.......2006-11-10

I read the book many years ago, enjoyed it then, and after the movie Capote, decided to listen to the book. It was great in both audio and book form. Capote was really intrigued by these two murderers so, most of the story involved their lives. The details of the act itself was scarey.

5 out of 5 stars SOME OF THE BEST WRITING YOU WILL EVER HEAR.......2006-07-21

I have spent much of my life planning to read the great novels but as of yet just have never found the time. Recently I discovered a wonderful alternative is listening to audio books. As of today I have now heard a number of great works but Capote's novel is in a class by itself. The writing is amazing. He owns the English language. Never does he settle for a second best way to describe a thing but writes with the precision of a master craftsman. Describing the deceased mother, whose eyes remained open, Capote refers to them as "death dulled eyes". Speaking of the shrubs he speaks of their "camel-like indifference to drought". Every sentence, every phrase, from cover to cover, is both poetic and gripping. Unlike many authors who begin strong and then begin to dull as the chapters progress, Capote keeps the freshness of his prose up throughout the work.

Simply put, this novel is on level beyond what most of us have ever read. And I must note that the reader on the audio version is intimately involved in the text. The reading in no way detracts from the power of the novel, but actualy enhances it - if that is possible.

This is one of the top 3 books I have ever heard or read - a masterpiece!

    5 out of 5 stars CAPOTE'S MASTERPIECE.......2006-04-10

When this book was first published it was a sensation, it makes the furor over the Da Vinci look mild in comparison and it made Capote a superstar. What makes this book unique, besides the fantastic writing, was the fact that Capote completely emersed himself in this project, he turned over every stone and completely manipulated everyone involved, to learn every angle of the story. This book is a complete tour de force, this is a book you will never forget, not just because of the crime, so vividly recreated, but also due to Capote's haunting prose. Highly recommended, lives up to all the hype. It's just a shame it ruined Capote, as nakedly ambitious as he was, he was also a true talent.

      Book Description

Mitch Berger, a top film critic with a major New York newspaper at a surprisingly young age, has become almost a recluse since his wife died one year ago. He spends his time secluded in his apartment or in the dark recesses of a screening room. Although he continues to dazzle moviegoers and the film elite with his criticisms, his editor and good friend is alarmed about him. As a scheme to pull him out of the doldrums of his grief, she gives him a non-film assignment - to do a color story on the wealthy and social homeowners on Connecticut's Gold Coast. It takes some doing, but in the end Mitch agrees. He is fortunate to find a cottage to rent on Big Sister, the absolute top-of-the-line private island outside the town of Dorset. His landlady, Dolly, is pleasant and friendly, but some of the other inhabitants of this small piece of land, although too well bred to come right out and say it, are not happy to have Mitch, born of parents only one generation away from Eastern Europe and raised on the city's pavements, arrive in their back yard. But Dolly, whose husband has recently left her, needs the money, and at least she is more than gracious. The discovery of a body during a bout of optimistic gardening in Dolly's back yard brings on the other main player - Lieutenant Desiree Mitry, one of only three women on the Connecticut State Police major crimes squad, the youngest of the three, and the only black. A dedicated officer, she is the terror of everyone who doesn't really want to give a home to one of her stray cats. She is, as well, a closet artist and a complicated and beautiful woman, and she intrigues Mitch from the start.

4 out of 5 stars More mystery than romance..........2007-09-30

This was a great book. I give one small warning, only by this book if you're more interested in mystery, plot than in a hot romance. This book delivers on the mystery, characters and plot, but is a little lacking in the hot, steamy romance department.

      2 out of 5 stars Well-written but sap.......2005-10-10

The text is simple, with common vocabulary and basic sentence structures. It is rich in description and humor. The characters are given distinctive backgrounds and attributes to make us like them. The mystery is simplistic, however, and ultimately all motivations in this book are one-dimensional. This is where detective fiction becomes soap opera, and not particularly well, but annoyingly you'll have to read until the end to find that out.

      5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully quirky pairing.......2004-04-05

What makes this mystery so enjoyable is not so much the plot (which is good, but perhaps a trifle far-fetched) as the characters & their interrelationships, particularly Mitch & Des. I love the way both of them are presented as less than perfect, & having their wounds from the past. When this detailing is combined with smart & sassy dialogue similar to that of a '30s romantic comedy, a seemingly illogical couple becomes completely convincing, & highly endearing. Kudos to Handler for a great series setup!

5 out of 5 stars An intelligent story and wonderful romance.......2004-02-12

I fell in love with Mitch and Des. Mr. Handler has written an intelligent story, drawing in the reader and leaving them wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars finally found it.......2003-08-28

a long-time lover of nero wolfe mysteries, i've been looking for something with the same qualities, where people and place are expressed with intelligent and quirky detail, humor and sympathy, and the story rolls along suspensefully, with no easy place to put the book down. i think i've found the replacement, and just wish david handler would keep them coming a bit faster.

A weakness for the bottle has cost Lorraine Page her job as a lieutenant in the LAPD, her family--everything she once held dear. Down and out, Page finds the will to crawl out of the bottle, pull together the few remaining strands of her life, and open a modest detective agency in Los Angeles. After a slow start, she finally lands a high-profile case that she hopes will get her business off the ground. The daughter of a movie star has disappeared while on a trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, and the distraught parents offer Page a cool million if she can find the girl.

Page quickly discovers the case is about more than one missing girl, and her investigation leads her into the seamy underworld of New Orleans lowlife and rich, thrill-seeking Hollywood kids, a world where violence and deceit are as commonplace as beignets and café au lait. As the pressure to find the girl mounts, Page finds herself falling off the wagon, turning again to booze for solace in her hour of need. Out of control, she knows she should back off the case, but one million dollars is a powerful incentive to keep going; if she blows this case, she realizes, she will never get the professional respect she so desperately wants.

        Book Description

Prime Suspect, the enormously successful two-time Emmy Award-winning television series, established its writer and creator, Lynda La Plante, as one of the preeminent originators of realistic crime drama. Turning her talent from the screen to the page,

La Plante has crafted an intelligent, hard-hitting thriller featuring a female lead every bit as compelling and complex as her Prime Suspect heroine played by Helen Mirren. Lorraine is a three-time loser: an ex-LAPD cop, ex-hooker, ex-wife, even an ex-mom, since she has lost custody of her kids. She is recovering from the alcoholism that nearly destroyed her life and, through tremendous force of will, has managed to pull herself back together and set up her own private detective agency in Los Angeles, but she finds that there is scant demand for her services.

Finally she lands the high-profile case that could activate her new career. The eighteen-year-old daughter of a fading movie starlet has disappeared during Mardi Gras, and her parents offer Lorraine $1 million if she finds the girl, dead or alive. As the search for the missing girl becomes a deadly murder hunt involving Hollywood rich kids and New Orleans lowlife, Lorraine is caught in a web of deceit and violence that threatens to drag her back into the murky world she has fought so hard to escape. When she finds herself strongly attracted to Robert Caley, the girl's father-- who, in turn, is sexually drawn to her--she knows she faces a new kind of danger. She begins to spin out of control and turns to her old friend booze for solace. The game gets more dangerous as Lorraine fights demons within and without, but the million-dollar bonus is a powerful incentive not to back off a case that would give her the professional respect she craves but could also kill her. Cold Blood reverberates with realism; its plot is multilayered, its characters vibrantly alive--just what one would expect from Lynda La Plante, a consummate chronicler of the criminal world.

This book starts out very weak and it goes down hill from there. The "mystery" is off-stage, then the author goes into long back story. I hated the main character and just put the book down. How on earth did this dog get published?

4 out of 5 stars IS THE BLOOD "COLD" ON THIS CASE??.......2001-11-02

When I read Cold Shoulder, the first book in this series, I immediately felt a connection to the main character, Lorraine Page. She's nothing like I am - as a matter of fact, she's quite different but she seems like someone I would like. As she struggles through her daily routine, trying to put her life back in order, she manages to capture the reader's heart in such a way that we will defend her to her dying day. In Cold Shoulder, she was actually given the "cold shoulder" by all those who knew and loved her. When her partner is killed on duty, she begins a downward spiral causing her to lose her job as a policewoman, lose her husband, lose her kids, resort to drugs and alcohol for some relief from her nightmares and basically give up living. It's not until she meets "Rosie", an AA member, that her life will finally get the help it needs to go on.

Cold Blood now finds Lorraine starting her own private investigation agency with Rosie as her partner. Their coupling is so very needed by both of them. Rosie will keep Lorraine on track and Lorraine will provide a much needed source for Rosie to mother. In this episode, Lorraine will travel from LA to New Orleans as she tries to find the missing teenage daughter of a wealthy California couple. She will be joined by Rosie, as well as Bill Rooney, a retired police captain, and Nick Bartello, another old friend of Bill's from the police department. The foursome has a great incentive...a million-dollar bonus if they can find 18-year-old Anna Louise Caley dead or alive.

This book is a fun romp through New Orleans in the midst of Mardi Gras. As usual, Lorraine is overbearingly persistent in tracking down all the clues that will hopefully lead to some closure for the girl's parents. Although the reader hopes and prays that the girl will be found alive, her blood just might be "cold" by the time they find her.

I'm just about ready to pick up the next book in the series - Cold Heart - and am looking forward to following Lorraine around again and making sure she stays away from the bottle.

        4 out of 5 stars Twisted Lady.......2001-08-05

With Cold Blood, Lynda LaPlante continues her story of ex-cop Lorraine Page which she began in Cold Shoulder. Lorraine Page continues her journey back to the top in Cold Blood after hitting rock bottom, and turning tricks for survival in Cold Shoulder. While this book does not contain the angst of the previous, it is a good, readable detective story.

With an offer of one million dollars on the table, Lorraine joins the hunt for lost heiress Anna Louise Caley. Lorraine uses her street savvy and cop instinct to help her find the clues to the mystery. She interviews, intimidates and uses sex to find the clues to Anna Louise's whereabouts.

Lorraine continues to be one of the more interesting female detectives. She is a person of dubious morals, who has left much of value behind her. She substitutes sex for love and fights alcoholism with varying success. Lorraine is perhaps the toughest female in the genre, not always likable, but always interesting.

If you like hard-boiled mysteries, this is an excellent book. Please read Cold Shoulder first.

1 out of 5 stars waste of money and more importantly time!.......2001-05-22

I thought this book to be contrived. The characters were extrememly unpleasant, especially Little Miss Detective. Why anyone would talk to her is beyond me. And, what happened at the end? I still don't know. A long journey to no where.

        5 out of 5 stars Chillingly erotic.......2000-04-03

An awesome twist of detail, accompanied by shocking findings by Lorraine Page, a private investigator who surpasses all the other private investigators who have been hired by the ultra-rich parents of a missing 16-teen-year-old girl. In a last-ditch effort, Page is hired by the mother of the girl. Page has her own black past and desperately needs to find the girl to save her falling-apart private investigation business. That, she does, and with a vengeance. The book is confusing at times, and the amount of characters made me almost put it down several times because I had to keep turning back pages to remember who everybody was -- that's something you're not supposed to have to do in a good book. I'm glad I didn't stop reading, because I discovered Ms. La Plante to be one of the top mystery writers I've seen after finishing this book. A prime mix of sex, blood and glamour.

          Book Description

The first in a remarkable mystery series, David Handler delivers The Cold Blue Blood: A Berger and Mitry Mystery. Here, this Edgar-winning author blends romance with a string of murders on a small island off the coast of Connecticut. Handler's witty book couples an odd pair as his protagonists: Mitch Berger and Desiree Mitry. Berger, a young New York film critic left indolent and infuriated by the loss of his wife to cancer is lured by his editor into spending time researching the lives of the "blue-blooded" on Connecticut's Gold Coast. Lieutenant Desiree Mitry of the Connecticut State Police Department joins forces with Mitch when he accidentally discovers the corpse of his landlady's husband. The two are engaging as they attempt to make sense of the scandals that surround them.

Stephen Hoye and Marguerite Jennings narrate this sordid tale of Big Sister Island where Mitch Berger discovers murder, romance, and the problematic lives of the social-elite.

5 out of 5 stars Hot Rental Properties that made my Blood Run Cold.......2007-04-18

I read this book with great interest since I had 9 rentals of my own. The information given and the stories told were EXACTLY what needs to be told to prospective investors. Rental property can make you money but you need to research your renters VERY closely. If you get just one bad renter you can loose all of your investment and it will cost you plenty. Mr. Heller tells true and compelling stories of REAL renters and it is very entertaining as well as informative.
