Although its not as great as The Cat in the Hat, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish is certainly one of my children's favorites, and they especially love trying to read some of the rhymes outloud. Certainly a great choice for a book for your young ones.

One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss gives young children an excellent way to start reading independently. The book helps children learn to count to eleven and it increases their vocabulary as you read it along with them the first few times. Young children just learning to read will be able to read this book as one of their first books that they can read by themselves; and the cute illustrations will delight children and even adults everywhere.

The book's plot is not entirely deep--nor should it be for this exceptionally young, tender age group. The book helps kids to learn how to count to eleven and recognize the words for those numbers; it also uses pictures to introduce words for basic colors including red, blue, black, yellow and pink. Children also explore the concepts of old and new; fast and slow; high and low; thin and fat as well as here and there. Excellent! The book also introduces the telephone and how two people can communicate by phone. Your child will love that--they'll think that the phone is a toy!

The book is nicely bound and the strength of the hardcover binding makes the book tolerate the bending and occasional carelessness of a young child who is learning to read partly by using this book. Great!

I highly recommend One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish for younger kids who are just learning to read. This book will increase their vocabulary by introducing words, comparisons and pictures. The child also gets a heightened awareness of the world around them; and the adorable illustrations will delight children everywhere.

What's with all the bad reviews?.......2007-08-15

I remember owning this book as a kid and honestly..There's no need to pick at it like some of these reviewers have been. The only thing I remember about the book from my childhood was how shiny the scales were, and how fun they were to look at. That's about it and the story itself didn't scar me or set a bad example as I don't even entirely remember it. The colorful illustration was distracting enough from the story. Sure, it's not perfect and it didn't exactly spread the greatest message, but I can assure you that when asking a grown person who had read the book as a kid what they remembered about it, they probably wouldn't speculate endlessly on how it shaped their morals later on in life. If you show it to a young enough kid, chances are they won't even care what it's about.

So when it comes to monitoring what our kids are taking in...Well, this book is the least of your worries, trust me. Saying that this book is in the "triumvirate of picture book mediocrity...", as one reviewer put it, puzzles me. Do the people reviewing the book even remember being children?

I really liked this book when I was little. I really loved (and still do) fish. Plus this book has some beautiful pictures. The only thing I didn't like was the ending. It always made me really sad. Now I know why it made me sad... IT'S COMMUNIST PROPAGANDA! The fish starts out all shiny and pretty, it's way better than the other fish, but the greedy other fish don't want to be friends with it. Instead of being happy with what they have, they want to be beautiful like the rainbow fish. They want to have shiny scales too. So the rainbow fish redistributes his scales to all the other fish until each of the fish only has one shiny scale and nobody is very pretty. He gives up his individuality for the good of the collective. This book has evil communist morals! The author equates individualism with possessive selfishness and promotes collectivism as the correct morality. He depicts the fish's scales as possessions that other fish are entitled to (ie...redistribution of wealth). I can't believe my parents read this book to me.... It does have pretty pictures though.

Socialism Primer for Children.......2007-08-12

This is a beautifully illustrated children's book that communicates socialist ideaology. The author equates individualism with possessive selfishness and promotes collectivism as the correct morality. He depicts the fish's scales as possessions that other fish are entitled to (ie...redistribution of wealth). Of course youngsters won't be able to identify the world view, but they'll be expected to internalize the social/political values modeled in this book.

First Book of Sushi, Yum Yum Dim Sum, Urban Babies Wear Black, as well as, the Petit Connoisseur: Art and The Petit Connoisseur: fashion, my kid LOVES them!! As stated they are BOARD books so your older kids who can actually read may get bored but for the little ones these are fun rhyming colorful introductions to different foods and such! And they are virtually indestructible! Great addition to any new baby room!

This is a very little kid's book, one of those small 5.5 inch x 5.5 inch, indestructable, 10 thick little pages. I was surprised when I received it. Almost too infant-like for my 5 yr old. It was a little fun though and I didn't return it. Just skimpy, a little disappointing. Honestly, can't remember if it was adequately decribed in the Amazon description. For $6.95, you decide.

Turning raw fish into fun rhymes.......2006-11-05

This is a fun twist on your typical children's book. Its got colorful pictures and whimsical rhymes, but the funniest part is the subject matter -- sushi: "I'll take yellowtail hamachi / and a red maguro slice. / Big, BIG futomaki has so many grains of rice!"

I'm sure my kids don't understand exactly what what's being talked about (and sometimes I don't either). But there's a pleasant pace to the rhymes and the words are fun to say out loud ("tekka maki" and "kappa maki" sound a bit like the nonsense phrases of Dr. Seuss).

Don't forget to notice that the last line of the story is actually on the back of the book. The first couple times I read it to my kids I didn't see that, and the book seemed to come to a puzzlingly abrupt end.

I bought this book for my 2 grandsons, age 3 and 1, and they both love it. The book is a very well made board book for the little one and the moving "eyes" fascinate them both. I first saw the book in a doctor's office and laughed, I thought it was so funny. I wrote down the publisher and ordered it on-line with another companion book.

To start off, though, I have to say that you just can't read these books lying down in bed with your child. The eyes roll up (they're weighted) and all you get is the "whites" of the eyes.
Having said that, if you sit up with your kid and read, this is a great series of books to get into. I like to barely wiggle the book while reading so the eyes move about in silly ways.
The rhymes are great and engaging. The storyline is always cute. In this book in particular the storyline has a redeeming moral value to it.
Brightly illustrated, the drawings do a great job of illustrating the action in the story AND finding a way to deal with the backsides of the holes the eyes go through.
Cute, Clever, Witty, and Worth it.

The book was a good book it was about this minnow named Max. He was smaller then all the other fish and wanted to know how to get big. he asked everyone and he had one more person to ask. He went to the Shark's Place. ...
The age level is about 4-6.
The lesson i think is that even if your smaller then everything you can still be just as good as everyone else.
I really liked the lesson in this book and the wording...

My parents bought this book for my two year old. Not only is it attention-getting with big bug eyes on every page, but the story is delightfully clever, interesting & educational. The back of the book even has a two page "encyclopedia" with pictures and descriptions of all the sea creatures introduced in the book. This is the first children's book that has kept my attention and interest as long as my son's. I highly recommend this book.

This is a wonderful book to read at the beginning of the school year for social studies. My students loved the book and made their own connections to them learning about other cultures. They had wonderful insight in the underlying themes and now when one of their classmates is not being open-minded, they say fish is fish!!

Great book for predictions.......2007-08-05

Leo Lionni has a wonderful simplistic style of art that many children relate to. I teach Kindergarten and love to use this book for a prediction activity. We talk about what the fish's perspective must be like, and using "mind movies" to visualize what he must be imagining as the frog describes his adventure. After I read the first recollection of the frog, I have the children imagine what the fish is imagining. I give them time to see what the fish is seeing, then I reveal what he actually saw. We do a quick check- in to see similarities and differences, then I distribute paper to do a "drawn prediction" for each of the following descriptions. My class loves it. Try it at home or in class. Have fun!

Fish is Fish by Leo Lionni is a great book for little kids with great imaginations. In this book a tadpole and a fish are friends. There are many things to learn from this book. I believe that this book should be read by little kids.

The pictures in this book are creative. The pictures are made from imagination. But, it might be better if he used the right colors. The book would really stand out to little kids. Little kids and beginners would love this book for its pictures. It has easy words for beginners to practice reading with.

Their friendship will make you happy even if you're really angry since nothing is better than friendship. For instance, frog left for a long time and eventually returned and fish was not mad. When he came back, he told amazing stories. The story wouldn't be complete without their friendship.

After a day with joy and frustration fish learns, "Frogs are frogs," and "Fish are fish." Fish risked his life to see what frog had described to him. Frog proved to be a hero and a friend. Fish learned a valuable lesson. Frog and fish remained friends.

Fish is Fish is something I definitely recommend. Young kids who are mad at a friend should totally read it. With all the happy events it makes it to a book that's great for friends. I liked how the author put the events in the way he did. Beginning readers should really read this book.

This is a great book if you have small children. They love it because it's fun to read out loud and it isn't so long that you get out of breath. This is a must have that I enjoy reading over and over again and my little ones never get tired of it.

My son is 2 1/2 and he loves this book! We read it together a couple of times a day. He looks at the pictures and flips through this book several times a day and the wording is so simple that he even recites the correct wording for each page from memory. In a post-Jaws/Discovery Channel world, unearthing fresh data on great white sharks is a feat. So credit Susan Casey not just with finding and spotlighting two biologists who have done truly pioneering field research on the beasts but also with following them and their subjects into the heart of one of the most unnatural habitats on Earth: the Farallon Islands. That Casey, via her biologist buddies Peter Pyle and Scot Anderson, can even report that sharks apparently follow migratory feeding patterns is a revelation. Throughout The Devil's Teeth, Casey makes clear that year upon year of observing the sharks have given Pyle and Anderson (and by extension, us) insights into shark behavior that are entirely new and too numerous to list. The otherworldly Farallon Islands, meanwhile, also dominate Casey's engaging tale as she charts their transformation from ultradangerous source of wild eggs in the 19th century to ultradangerous real-life shark lab and bird sanctuary today. Despite the plethora of factoids on offer, Casey's style is consistently digestible and very amusing. She also has a knack for putting things into perspective. Take this characteristic passage:

The Farallon great whites are largely unharassed. They might cross paths with the occasional boatload of day-trippers from San Francisco, but they're subjected to none of the behavior-altering coercion that nature's top predators regularly endure so that people can sit in the Winnebago... and get a look at them. This is important because despite their visibility at the Farallones, and despite the impressive truth that sharks are so old they predate trees, great whites have remained among the most mysterious of creatures."

By book's end, it's hard to know what's more captivating: The biologists' groundbreaking data, Casey's primer on the evolution of the Farallones, the islands' symbiotic relationships with the sharks, the gulls and sea lions they attract, or the outpost's resident ghosts. Getting to Know the Great White
It was a BBC documentary on great white sharks visiting California's Farallon Islands that turned Susan Casey from an editor of adventure and outdoors stories in such magazines as Outside to a journalist obsessed with an outdoors adventure of her own. In her Amazon.com interview, Casey recalls the fascinations and the follies of her time with the sharks in the Farallones and discusses everything from the ethics of adventure journalism to the stunning silence and size of nature's perfect predators. And in her answers to the Significant Seven (the seven questions we like to ask every author), she reveals her admiration for both Joseph Mitchell and Johnny Knoxville (once you've read her book, both choices seem appropriate).

Great topic but self absorbed writer.......2007-09-22

Positives: stories about history of the Farallones and too-brief summaries of scientific information about white sharks.

Negatives: way, way too much information about her own personal struggles. Also, she seems to semi-idolize the scientists in a way that struck me as groupie-like: "He was a striking person, in his early thirties and athletically built, with jet-black hair and dark eyes and a smile that could light up a small midwestern city."

The author picked a great subject, and was clearly willing to do whatever it took to get a story, but she would have been better served by focusing more of her attention on the sharks and the islands. Nothing that happened to her personally seemed all that interesting to me.

I'm stunned that anybody gave this book less than five stars. Seriously. It's not just a story about sharks hovering around an inhospitable island like savage school buses, tearing apart unhappy sea lions and bubbling up buckets of frothy blood for three months out of the year -- it's an adventure tale, it's a biological mystery, and ... i suspect it's a love story. sharks, yachts, desert islands, divers, journalists ... it's hard to come up with a more gripping page turner. It's one of those books that you give to everybody you know. "Oh, it's your birthday is it, Horace, well, I know what you're getting! Har har har!" And so far, nobody's come back with less than a face of pallid horror, clutching my shirt and saying "I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!" -- really. it's that good.

Good read.......2007-07-23

I just picked up this book in a discount bookstore in Orlando while on vacation for 4$ not expecting it to be such a great book. While learning about both the animal and natural world, I got to revel in Susan's destruction (of both herself as well as about anything she touched). She is the classic white hunter of years past. In short, it was extreme and I loved it. I recommend folks read it - but only with the attitude of looking for entertainment value.

And not because of anything the sharks do.

Read between the lines and the obsession is not what the author claims. Not a bad first half, but, as other reviewers point out, the latter part of the book is an example of journalist endeavors gone wrong.

Did not leave me happy I had read it. There are too many great books to waste time on anything less.

Five Little Gefiltes.......2007-08-06

Five little smiling Gefilte fish balls wearing top hats (one is always whistling) greet us on the cover of this amusing parody of the "Five Little Ducks" song. They go out daily from their jar to experience city life, bouncing down the wrought iron fire escape, "taking in a play", swimming in the bay "crashing the deli buffet", an getting "shlepped away" in a yellow taxi. Unfortunately for Mama Gefilte, one less gefilte returns each day, causing her to cry out "OY VEY" in consternation, until they all return happily to where the babushka-wearing Mama fish ball sits on her park bench. She stops kvetching, and now kvells with happiness. The funny asides on signage and within the illustrations are clever inside Yiddish jokes for the older crowd, but the book stands on its own as a delightful frolic through New York's Jewish scene. This book needs to be sung--the zanier the better! Share with some kids ASAP--just avoid serving Gefilte fish to those who won't appreciate it!

I overheard an amused mom reading this aloud to her daughter and then, after they put it down, I grabbed it and bought it. We love reading it aloud and my kids shout "oy vey" which cracks me up! I also love having them try out some of the yiddish words that are funny flourishes throughout the book.

Dave Horowitz, Five Little Gefiltes (Putnam, 2007)

It probably says something about my upbringing that until I read the PW and SLJ reviews of Five Little Gefiltes, I'd never heard of Five Little Ducklings. So consider this as the review of what seems to be the only person on the planet who's never read Five Little Ducklings and act accordingly.

I thought it was great. Not so much because of the story, which is basic kids'-book fare, but because of the illustrations. Horowitz is a sight-gag guy, and he fills each panel here with great puns, some background Yiddish (there's a glossary in the back for those of us who've never heard some of the words before), and incidental characters who have just as much visual appeal (and distinction) as his little gefiltes. Who are pretty funny guys for being fish-flavored matzo balls in hats. I'm not sure whether this book will help you convince your kids to eat gefilte fish-- hell, I'm not sold on trying the things myself-- but it's a fun ride all the same. ***
