Book Description
Katie Ellison is not a liar.
It's just that telling the truth is so . . . tricky. She knows she shouldn't be making out with a drama club hottie behind her football-player boyfriend's back. She should probably admit that she can't stand eating quahogs (clams), especially since she's running for Quahog Princess in her hometown's annual Quahog Festival. And it would be a relief to finally tell someone what really happened the night Tommy Sullivan is a freak was spray-painted on the new wall outside the junior high school gymnasium—in neon orange, which still hasn't been sandblasted off. After all, everyone knows that's what drove Tommy out of town four years ago.
But now Tommy Sullivan has come back. Katie is sure he's out for revenge, and she'll do anything to hang on to her perfect (if slightly dishonest) existence. Even if it means telling more lies than ever. Even if, now that Tommy's around, she's actually—no lie—having the time of her life.

Unbelievable!! .......2007-08-19
I loved this book so much! I love Meg Cabot and her books have always pleased me but this one was AMAZING!!! I mean- talk about cliff hanger! You will love this book. Amazing, unexpected, lovely twists in this book- it's a keeper!! You are going to LOVE it!!! It's perfect for young adults/teenagers and it's unbelievably great!!
Good but not her best.........2007-07-26
Cute story and funny premise, but the heroine was not quite as engaging as others--Samantha Madison from All American Girl or Mia from the Princess Diaries.
One for the Stages.......2007-07-26
when I first started this book, I really didn't have that high of an opinion for it. As it progresses, you can actually feel the tension and romance budding in all of the characters. This turned out to be actually one of the best books I had ever read because it is as if you can actually relate to the characters and the situations they somehow come upon. though it is slow to the start, by the second chapter, your mind will be completely wrapped around in the universe that belongs to Katie Ellison.
Entertaining But Disappointing.......2007-07-12
Katie Ellison is caught in a web of her own lies. She says she likes Quahogs, the name of both the local clams her town is famous for and the football heroes everyone loves. That's why she's up for Quahog Princess, and why she's has her job as a waitress serving those famous Quahogs...in both senses of the word. Truth is, she doesn't like either kind of Quahog. Katie is also involved with two different guys... Then a third guy, her former best friend Tommy Sullivan, about whom she harbors a big secret, shows up after years away from the town.
If PANTS ON FIRE had been written by any other author, it might get a better review. But with Meg Cabot's name on it, this less-than-gripping novel is disappointing. It's an okay read, but check it out from the library, and if you haven't yet caught up with, say, the Princess Diaries series, pick those up before Meg Cabot's new stand-alone novel. It's not terrible, but Meg Cabot is usually brilliant and funny. Her characters usually step right off the page. While the plot seemed Meg-ish enough, the writing and characters of PANTS ON FIRE fall flat. Katie is boring, especially compared to Meg Cabot's other heroines, such as Mia Thermopolis and Samantha Madison, characters whose stories are well-written and absorbing. I couldn't make myself care much about what happened to Katie. While PANTS ON FIRE is good enough to help pass an otherwise dull afternoon, it is a huge disappointment from someone so talented as Meg Cabot.

Meg Cabot on Fire.......2007-07-01
Meg Cabot has always been a great author, she has written so many books, and they are all great. Pants on Fire is amazing and i read it in one night. Katie Ellison's actions hook you from the very beginning, because she is a very, VERY interesting character. She is dating the most popular boy and someone else.... :) Then her past comes back to haunt her, the mystery from their middle school lives is so intriguing, because you don't really know the whole story until the very last chapter! overall, this is my favorite meg cabot book, as well as avalon high! Good Job Meg Cabot...!

Book Description
It's never fun when a great summer comes to an end.
Particularly when one argues with one’s adorable, but grossly insensitive, boyfriend the night before school starts. It’s such a terrible fight, Jess doesn’t know—are they broken up? Should she apologize? Too bad Jess is spending all her time in detention and can’t talk to Fred to figure it out. A sadistic new English teacher has decided Jess needs an attitude adjustment, and Jess can’t seem to stop making terrible mistakes. When she ends up pantless in her own backyard, Jess is left to ask herself: Where did she go wrong? And what can be done to make it up to Fred and salvage this horrible, horrible year?

But this attempt is still worth a read.......2006-02-20
The third in this series. Limb still delivers a funny and insightful book about teen angst and identity. But Jess's dilemmas are getting rather stale by this third retelling. It seems that variations of the same plot keep coming to fruitarian. Fans of this series will enjoy Jess and Fred's antics but Limb has failed again to capture the same level of freshness, humor and brilliance of Girl, 15, Charming but Insane. But this attempt is still worth a read.

Gilbert.......2007-10-06
Let me tell you a feel-good story. It involves love - the love of a mother for her daughter, and a child's passionate, exhilarated, uncomplicated love for books. This is the true story of Deb Raymer, and her daughter Sabrina, and how I came to know them. This holiday season, I am grateful that Deb has shared parts of her story, and that through her mom, Sabrina has shared a wonderful cast of characters previously unknown to me.
A couple of months ago, Deb asked me to help her find a series of books. All Sabrina wants for Christmas is "Gilbert". Deb needed to order multiple copies of each book in the collection, she explained. Sabrina loves the "Gilbert" books so much, that she reads them to pieces. Literally. While I am always thrilled to see someone who loves books that much, that's not even the best part of the story. Sabrina is mentally and physically handicapped. She has a job at Partners in Progress that she enjoys. Whenever she rides to work on the bus, she has a "Gilbert" book - or two, or three - in her bag, and she "reads" them to the other passengers. Sabrina has memorized her favorite books. Her mother needs to keep buying new copies of them because Sabrina pages through them so much and so often that they fall apart.
Gilbert, the hedgehog, and his sister Lola, are creations from the paintbrush and pen of Diane de Groat. This author/illustrator started working in children's literature by doing the artwork for some well-known children's authors, such as Lois Lowry and Eve Bunting. De Groat started on her Gilbert series in 1996 with "Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink", which is still Sabrina's favorite.
I hadn't heard of de Groat, and Deb gave my literary ego a boost by reassuring me that I'm not alone. Often, when Deb and Sabrina have searched for Gilbert in libraries and bookstores, he is nowhere to be found. So, it's time to spread the word. Diane de Groat has created a fun, inexpensive series with sympathetic characters, situations that kids can relate to, and a little lesson that doesn't come across like a 2"x 4" to the forehead. The titles themselves produce a smile for kids and adults alike. Now there's a Gilbert for every season in a child's life. A reader can start school with Gilbert in "Brand New Pencils, Brand New Books" and end the school year with the companion volume, "No More Pencils, No More Books! No More Teacher's Dirty Looks!" In these final months of the year, we have been enjoying "We Gather Together, Now Please Get Lost" for Thanksgiving, and "Jingle Bells, Homework Smells" for Christmas.
The Gilbert books have been so successful that now his sister Lola has her own series, books for slightly younger children, that often include Gilbert, but from Lola's point-of-view. When Lola can't decide what to be for Halloween, she finally decides to be "a Gilbert", because she knows he's an original. I think Sabrina and Lola are on to something good.

Liar Liar pants on fire.......2004-09-26
This is a book that has beautiful big illustration. The characters are animals (which I think children relate to better) and the story revolves around the idea that Lying is a bad habit and you get in less trouble if you tell the truth rather than lie. The story inside the story is about a teacher teaching her children about Presidents Washington and Lincoln (Mainly President Washington). The main character Gilbert is the one who learns a valuable lesson. This book would be great to read to a elementary history class especially around presidents day. I would recommend this book for kids over the age of four. I don't feel that most children under age four would understand the way the story teaches the lesson as it makes reference to the story of the Cherry Tree.

LIES.......2005-12-21
The Girl Who Lies
By
Trey
The book I read is called Liar Liar Pants On Fire. This book is about Zoey who lies so much that no one believes her even if she tries to tell the truth. After reading the book I think if you lie too much eventually no one will believe you ever again, but if you tell the truth people will believe you. Zoey changes a lot because in the beginning Zoey lies and in the end she stops because her friend comes over and sees that she is telling the truth. Before I read Liar Liar Pants on Fire I thought if you lied no one will believe you ever again. Now I think if you just tell the truth kids will start to believe you again. I recommend this book to boy and girls in 2 grade because it will teach the person not to lie, self to text to the middle kid in the family like an 8 or 7 year old.
For 2 Year olds.......2001-06-22
All those childish scenes trying to get points!
Gordon Korman is running out of ideas.......1999-06-17
While there are a few inspired moments in this Gordon Korman book, it doesn't come close to his masterpieces such as The War with Mr. Wizzle, I Want to Go Home! or Who is Bugs Potter? While Korman can write for younger readers, this story doesn't have the necessary flair to keep even the most beginning reader's attention. Very predictable and lacking the creative humor of Korman's other works.

i loved this book!!! if you're a fan of jane green, jennifer weiner, jennifer crusie, sophie kinsella, or marian keyes, you'll love maggie alderson. this book is charming and funny. it should be read by everyone who is a fan of chick-lit.
Glamour, boys and nonsense.......2005-12-15
This is one of the best chick lit books I've ever read. The narration is sharp and the plot keeps one constantly turning the pages. One of the things I like about this book was the portrayal of a glamourous, if insular lifestyle. While many characters are superficial drug aficianados, the narrator doesn't preach about the evils of a fast life but rather enjoys the characters for what they are.
Only two problems with the book: the narrator doesn't seem to have much of a "presence:" this is made up for by the many memorable (if vaguely annoying) people that she meets and befriends. But thinking back on her, I can't remember what she's "about." My other problem is that the romance at the end is tied up a bit too neatly. But come on, it's chick lit, and this is a damn good book!
for die hard chick lit fans.......2005-09-07
In London Georgiana "Georgia" (not Georgie or George) Abbott catches her fiancé with his erect penis, but someone else is giving him the lift. Needing to move on and mend her broken heart, Georgia accepts a job at Glow magazine in Sydney, Australia though her friends and family think going Down Under to turn one's life upside down seems excessive.
In Sydney, Georgia joins the party scene as expected by someone who works for a magazine that offers information on orgasms for the 18-26 (by 27 you know or are too frigid to matter) female. Georgia realizes the men she meets are clones of the cheater she left behind; even the tongues are as slimy as that limey she dumped. Though Billy Ryan's tongue makes her reconsider having a first born with him, he introduces her to Rory Stewart who mourns the loss of his three older brothers in a plane crash. Rory cares for his devastated family taking up farming and having given up art. He and Georgia are attracted to one another, but he fears commitment feeling overburdened with his family load.
Though the disproportionate promiscuity and overindulgent drug usage is over emphasized, fans will appreciate this chick lit tale as the English transplant does Sydney (and a few males). The story line is often amusing, but the support cast for the most part comes across as superficial. Rory is the only person who truly cares about others, which leads to his dilemma of choosing between the woman he loves and tending to his broken family. He keeps Maggie Alderson's tale alive with his deep feelings especially his frustrations of that of the caretaker who has abandoned his desires sacrificing his life doing the good deeds.

Awful!.......2005-04-15
This book absolutely appalled me. It claimed to beat Bridget Jones as a bit of chick fiction, but the Jones novels never tried so hard to be "cool". It's depiction of life in Australia was so cliche that I find it hard to believe the author was Australian. It seemed more like a complete regurgitation of the "Australia" that is fed to foreigners by our tourism industry! On top of this, the protagonist in this piece of crap annoyed me to tears with her superficiality and gullibility. Not only that, but she constantly went along with things she didn't want to do as though she had no will of her own! Not a good example of what a woman should be. She was unwilling to really work at any of her relationships, as soon as any of her friends or romantic interests made a mistake she was ready to throw them on the rubbish heap. That's the exact opposite of the kind of values our society needs! At least Bridget Jones taught (through those jailed Thai women) that many shortcomings can be forgiven. Moreover, the protagonist in POF was constantly surrounded by drugs and homosexuality and promiscuity. The author is obviously lacking in morals to such a degree that she is willing to sink to glamourising these things in order to make a quick buck! The characters were all so cliche and unconvincing. They just didn't ring true and seemed to me more like figments of some teen's fantasy. This Maggie Alderson should never be published - she should just go back to her superficial and contrived life of sniffing coke with all her suferficial, contrived, insecure and empty friends.
Good for a laugh.......2005-02-05
I am not one to read this sort of book usually, but found 'Pants on Fire' by Maggie Alderson to be a hilarious, light read. As an Australian it is quite interesting to read about Sydney from an overseas perspective (even if that really is mostly fiction since Maggie is actually Australian).
So if you are bogged down is something more literary and need something lighter, give this one a go.

Tom's fourth and latest book, titled; `One of God's Salesmen', has taken him since July 2, 1984 to complete. On that day, he took off in his Ultralite airplane for the last time. Climbing to 150 feet, the engine quit, the plane shuddered, snap rolled upside down and spiraled vertically into the ground. Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot
ASIN: 1581824807 |
Book Description
Al Franken was a "nobody" in the arena of political punditry before he wrote two best-selling books, Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot and Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them. Now one of the most prominent figures on the liberal Air America radio network, formed to counter the mostly conservative voice of mainstream talk radio, he consistently boasts "I tell the truth" and "I hold myself to an impossibly high standard when it comes to telling the truth."
Until now, says Alan Skorski, Franken's continuous smears against his enemies while promoting himself as the "ultimate truth teller" have gone unchallenged by the mainstream media. Surprisingly, even conservative or right-leaning media have not challenged the falsity of much of what he says, although Franken does not define what he believes is a lie, except to say that conservatives "get away with it." In contrast, Skorski defines a lie as "intentionally telling an untruth with the purpose of trying to cover up or get away with something," which he then accuses Franken of doing with impunity.
Alan Skorski has researched the facts regarding the allegations in Franken's last two books, monitored his daily radio show, spoken with people cited and referenced in Franken's books, and exchanged approximately 30 e-mails with Franken in order to provide readers with an accurate insight into how Franken thinks and operates. What Skorski finds is something very different from what Franken claims, and he concludes that, unlike many of the petty "lies" Franken writes about in his bookswhether Bill O'Reilly's Inside Edition show won a Peabody or a Polk award or whether Ann Coulter said that she and Franken were "friendly"...Pants on Fire reveals that Franken himself regularly lies, smears, and distorts what others say and do, ultimately discrediting himself as a "truth teller."
Indeed, according to Skorski, while Franken has called many peoplefrom Rush Limbaugh and Brit Hume to President Busha "liar," "hypocrite," "cheater," "lazy," "shameless," and/or "dishonest," ...Pants on Fire amply illustrates not only that many of his claims are false but that Franken employs the very tactics he accuses the right of using.

SAVE YOUR MONEY.......2007-08-19
This fish wrap was a waste of time and money. Most of the alleged "lies" were not lies at all but appeared to be the author's "take" on things. Save your money and buy one of Al Franken's books. Just my advice.
What is wrong with people?.......2006-07-09
I had to give this book a chance, so i borrowed a copy from a friend of mine who, for some strange reason, thought buying this was a good idea.
I believe there is a severe mental condition that is going around in America. People who are so afraid to think, so allergic to facts and information, actually go out attacking those who are the most credible.
Mr. Franken is a comedian. But his books have no inaccuracies. Leave it to a comedian to do thorough research I guess. In his three most popular books, he illustrates in detail how the "liars" lie, and what the lies are.
In this book, the author actually shows his own ignorance. But beyond just being somewhat ignorant, the author also reveals the obsession of hating facts. Many times in the book the author makes AL'S OWN POINT. Other times, the author just states a lie over and over to try to magically make it become true.
Does anyone care about truth any more? I dont think so. And anyone who would give this book above a "one star" rating, needs to get their head examined.
AS FOR THE PEABODY issue- not only did Bill lie, but he expanded the lie. He then claimed he never said the lie. Then he repeated the lie AGAIN. when confronted at the book expo, on the same stage with Franken, he lied again about lying. Then went on his show, and lied about lying about lying. And this man is still employed in the US. oh well.
IF THIS IS THE RIGHT'S BEST SHOT, THEY'RE IN TROUBLE.......2006-07-07
All these bombardments from Franken, and no response from the Right - mostly because Al's research is so diligent - until now. And this is the best the Right can do? Bottom line: Skorski is an angry, petulant, 2nd Grader debating a Political Professor Emeritus. He is not Franken's intellectual equal. And yes, I have read the book.
Skorski has the gall to print a Department of Labor graph that he can't even read; any moron who can add can see that the numbers prove Franken's point about minimum wages. Skorski says it proves the opposite, after admitting that he can't follow the graph. Then there's his coup de grace: Franken (correctly) caught O'Reilly in a falsehood when Bill said he and his show (Inside Edition) won a Peabody award, and then lied about saying it. Skorski's defense: Franken accused O'Reilly of lying about winning the award HIMSELF, when Bill was really only lying about THE SHOW winning the award. Are you getting a feel for the level of analytical thinking here?
If you want the truth, this book is a complete waste of time.
Instructive.......2006-04-03
This is actually an interesting book. I'm a liberal and a Democrat, and I read this book not to be convinced about a variety of minor points but to try to figure out where some of us Democrats are going wrong when we take on the conservatives.
Well, there are plenty of Democrats who make some rather tame policy statements. And there are some who go beyond that to denounce some rather misleading comments and implications by conservatives. Whether that's a good idea or not, I'm sure that some of the denunciations are going to do more harm than good: if the comments are clearly off-target, they cast doubt on the whole liberal argument.
I do feel that the administration mishandled the war against Iraq. And I sure was fooled when Colin Powell told us about the Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. Until then, I hoped we could avoid (or at least postpone) an invasion of Iraq, keeping our military options more open. But he convinced me that an immediate war might make sense. I bet he fooled far more folks than just me.
I see every reason for us liberals to complain about being fooled like that! But Skorski has shown me that we need to be careful about what we say if we want to achieve something useful. If we seem to be slamming America as a terrorist nation for all this, we're going to come across as dishonest and unreasonable at best. And that is no way to make progress in the fight against bias and lies!
Another issue is that of the "liberal media." Now, any of us who have witnessed the past few election campaigns must have noticed that a majority of the mainstream media folks openly favored the Democratic candidates for President. But did this translate into much media help to those candidates? I simply don't know, as much of the anecdotal material in the campaign seemed to put Democratic candidates in a poor light. I think the dominant problem is a media that has abandoned journalistic standards. Skorski easily finds some evidence that the media have behaved badly, but this is simply shooting fish in a barrel, and I think the problem goes beyond media bias.
I found the issue of tolerance and diversity on American campuses interesting as well. We can find plenty of liberals on most of our best college campuses. And I think we need to make it clear that we're happy to give conservatives (even though Republicans have a majority in Congress, the executive, and seemingly even the Supreme Court) their say. Otherwise, we'll find it hard to make our points when we preach to anyone outside of our own, um, choir.
A big problem for us liberals is that we sometimes feel we need to choose between what seems best for our country at the moment and what we feel is the best long-range choice for the world. If we take one side, we may look like conservatives or reactionaries. If we take the other side, we may look like traitors. And Skorski shows some cases where those who ought to have been engaging in honest deliberation about America's foreign policy options wound up looking flatly hostile to America and American interests, with little if anything to redeem such an attitude. I think readers of this book may learn something here.
The author has an interesting section about Michael Moore's movie, Fahrenheit 9/11. He appears to ask about the extent to which it includes speculation on American complicity in the attacks. And he contrasts all this with movies about Pearl Harbor. After all, our administration (as well as much of our nation) knew that there was a risk of war with Japan. But we don't go overboard with speculations that the administration was pretty much aware that Pearl Harbor would be attacked yet failed to do anything about it! I think it is reasonable for Skorski to ask that we do the same about 9/11. Obviously, we made plenty of mistakes that led to this disaster. But we ought to be responsible and honest in discussing them. If Moore refuses to be responsible, I think we liberals ought to find folks who will do a better job. I don't want his voice to be the only Democratic one out there on this issue!
Skorski quotes Franken as saying that he's really angry at Yasser Arafat, because Arafat gave "us" Ariel Sharon. I think that's just one more area where we Democrats need to try to avoid outlandish and credibility-busting remarks. Arafat was worth opposing (and being angry at) because he was a thug who gave orders (which were obeyed) to kill large numbers of civilians. Yes, had there been no war by Arafat, Israel might have had some other leader, but so what? Are we mad at the German leaders primarily because they gave "us" Churchill in World War Two? By the way, such comments open us up to remarks (which Skorski in fact makes) about Arafat being invited on a huge number of occasions to the Clinton White House. That was a moral error, and probably a political error as well. Why compound it?
There are also comments about why we Democrats have lost some Presidential elections. And I have to agree that, for example, Gore probably lost more votes than he gained by walking up to Bush during a Presidential debate. These things happen. But it's worth remembering these tidbits, just in case one is tempted to repeat such errors on purpose.
I know that most reviewers of this book are simply judging it on its political merits. But I'll give it three stars even though I disagree with most of its politics. I think Skorski makes some good points, and I think that it is useful to see how non-liberals may react to a few of the things that some of us say.
