Book Description

The magnetism of Martin Luther King Jr. (Law #9) . . . Cicero's ability to captivate an audience with his eloquence (Law #5) . . . the connection Will Rogers made with the common man (Law #10) . . . all of these leaders were using the 21 Laws of Leadership long before John Maxwell ever put pen to paper.

Through enlightening discussion, author James Garlow illustrates how these 21 key principles have been at work throughout history. Learn from the great General Robert E. Lee why the Law of Respect is so important when leading men into battle. Let the story of the Donner Party's failed expedition demonstrate the significance of the Law of Navigation. Learn from church leader John Wesley how the Law of Process kept his converts steady in their faith while others floundered. These laws have been tested by history; now test them for yourself.

I've listened to some videos of John C. Maxwell's "Laws of Leadership" series a few years ago and now I bought this book based on it. It's a great way to mix history with Christian leadership and as a college history major, I found this book useful! I will be looking into John C. Maxwell's book series soon.

5 out of 5 stars ARE YOU A LEADER?..... THEN YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK!.......2003-01-06

This was an excellant book that dove deeper into John Maxwell's classic, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. It's presented similar to John's 21 Laws where each chapter is broken down into an individual Law, but James Garlow gives specific examples of how Great Leaders in History have succeeded by following these laws or have failed because they abused the laws of leadership. John Garlow's writing is clear and to the point and this book is definately worth the price. Your learning from a leader who has been following and studing with John Maxwell personally for the past fifteen years! This book is a MUST READ for anyone who wants to become a better leader/CEO, build an organization, and understand John Maxwell's 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership more in depth. BUY IT TODAY! You can't afford not to.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT MARRIAGE OF HISTORY & CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP LESSONS.......2002-12-15

I am a leadership trainer and give over 200 programs per year. My leadership library is extensive and varied. Most of the new leadership books are just "love song" books - they are saying the same thing in a different way. In this book, the messages are the same, but the writing methodology is fresh and different.

James has accomplished an intriguing and "page turner" leadership lessons book by including detailed historic examples of each of Maxwell's 21!

Book Description

In this groundbreaking guide, Stephanie Winston explains how she discovered, after more than two decades as a leading organization expert and bestselling author, that senior executives and CEOs seem to possess unique conceptual skills in the areas of time management and organization that enable them to dramatically increase their productivity. Intrigued by this revelation, Winston set out to interview dozens of senior executives in an attempt to better understand the work habits and mental discipline of the supersuccessful, and to quantify their skills and translate them into techniques that will enable managers and ambitious workers at all levels of an organization to develop their own productivity and time management style. The result is a concise, practical, inspiring, and information-filled book that will help any reader get organized for success.

Among the strategies that Winston uncovered are two that may surprise—and give heart to—many readers. First: top executives deal very differently with the day-to-day interruptions that cause most of us to lose focus and get sidelined. They view them not as a menacing obstruction to workflow but instead as a means to connect with fellow workers and enable more work to be done. Second: supersuccessful businesspeople do not multitask; they focus their complete attention on each task at hand until it is done, and then move on to the next thing. And they employ powerful delegation strategies to enhance their own productivity and that of their team.
Among the many other lessons Winston brings to the reader are insights on how to:

• conquer e-mail and paperwork gridlock
• run and participate in meetings more effectively
• develop your own best productivity and time management style
• create techniques to find valuable private time in the middle of a hectic day
• use follow-up strategies that ensure you respond to others consistently and complete all necessary tasks

Throughout Organized for Success, Winston shares practical tips and tested techniques geared to helping workers and managers at every level to adopt the strategies that highly successful executives have employed on their way up the corporate ladder.

Even more, she helps us all—not just those who aspire to the senior executive ranks—to adopt an organized and disciplined mind-set in every aspect of our professional lives.

3 out of 5 stars Decidedly Ordinary.......2006-02-05

You'll find no groundbreaking material in this book, though the initial premise is promising. On the positive side, the author provides a plentitude of real-world examples, by various named CEO's, of how they organize their tasks, their schedules, and their think-tank time. On the other hand, and perhaps this is inevitable in a study of this nature, a significant portion of the suggestions are what any ordinary study on time management would cite. The jacket cover refers to this book as a "groundbreaking guide," but, alas, the groundbreaking has not yielded a sufficient number of nuggets for this reader to consider the expedition time well spent.

The book is well organized, implying that the reader might pick this up as a library book and skim for suggestions relevant to the reader's particular need. Unfortunately, I highly doubt that any reader would return to this book for a refresher on what are mostly well known and often suggested techniques.

5 out of 5 stars Great Practicals and Useables.......2005-10-22

For those of us who are not naturally organized and who need help with ideas that are realistic and proven, Winston's book is a welcomed tool. She just flat does a good job in giving us several solutions to choose from. She does not advocate or lock in to just a single solution. E.g. From PDAs to Index cards in the front pocket...what works best for a particular individual is advocated. The last 20% of the book bogs down a little, but still does not deter from it's overall worth. This is a required book for our church planter interns at the Glocalnet training and NorthWood Church Multiplication Center.

3 out of 5 stars INTERESTING READING BUT..........2005-09-12

The good point about this book is that it gives practical hints (although many are quite obvious) on organization issues, and therefore not only theoritical but for sure a practical approach on the topic for those needing so. However, I do agree with some other reviewer that points out the book is too much focused on CEO practices only (i.e., meaning you have assistants to delegate tasks)

4 out of 5 stars Organized for Success: Top Executives and CEOs Reveal the Or.......2005-02-26

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Read twice - cover to cover, and have picked up several great tips. I've enjoyed better performance and organization based on having incorporated a few changes recommended in this book into my day. Great book! Worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars The Master!.......2005-02-20

Stephanie proves once again, she's the master of her craft. More than helpful strategies, she also lets us peek inside the surprising world of the top executives, which was informative, surprising and fascinating.

5 Thumbs Up for Ms. Winston!

3 out of 5 stars best for people just realizing that they do this.......2007-08-17

I have mixed feelings about this book (I guess a three star review usually means that).

If you are just realizing that you procrastinate, then this is a good book to start with - it puts a large focus on identifying styles of procrastination. This can be useful, and the stories - that seemed all too believable - that emphasize the effects of procrastination definitely make an impact.

However, if you are pretty aware of your styles of procrastination and thought-habits around it (I was when I read this), then I am not sure that it is very helpful. For example, when I took the "style quiz", I found that I scored fairly highly for several styles, but not super-highly for any of them. So... everything "sort of" applies... which means that the division into styles was only a bit helpful for me.

I didn't find that this book led to significant changes in habits or significant new insights. Still, some of the stories have stayed with me, so... it's a three star book.

If you are just at the stage of admitting that you procrastinate - well, I'd say buy this book! Otherwise, don't...

5 out of 5 stars A Gift of Time!.......2007-07-19

As a lifelong procrastinator on her way down the hill, I have read MANY books on this subject as I try to conquer my problem. This book is the best for me. Others who criticize the categorization may not realize that no one fits into one niche. Because I fit into three categories, I do the exercises for all of them. The visualization exercises are so powerful they bring me to tears! I don't understand why, as they are abstract, but my reaction tells me they are hitting the mark.

I have improved my productivity greatly by DOING the exercises in this book. For me, learning the causes behind my behavior helped me to make better use of my time, most days now! For the rest of them, I have learned to be more forgiving and not become frozen in the self-blame and guilt that contribute to the problem. Each day is not just another day to put things off, but another day to try again!

5 out of 5 stars What a great source of help.......2005-12-12

This was not my first nor last book on procrastination. If you're like me, you read self-help books seeking out the little nugget of gold that is going to help make your life better once you put into practice your newfound wisdom. That's just what I find with Linda Sapadin's book.

While others may frown upon her mode of classification, its forgivable given the mountainous job it is to delve into the psychology of just one person. As a procrastinator, I used books on organization, goal setting and self-motivation. But Sapadin's book helped me to locate the "real" reason I was accomplishing less than I am fully capable of achieving.

I joyfully recommend this book to anyone still grappling with issues of procrastination. You may not like being stereotyped, but your can easily overlook that once you get the results you're after, less procrastinating and more "getting things done".

5 out of 5 stars LOTS OF GREAT SUGGESTIONS.......2005-01-16

This book is great. It teaches you how to overcome your procrastination, based on your personality style. What is a good tip for me (a perfectionist) may not be a good one for someone else (a crisis-maker). The author described me to a tee in several scenarios.

1 out of 5 stars Not to Waste It On this Book.......2004-06-26

This was my first, unfortunatly, book on procrastination, and absolutly the worst book on the subject. How simplistic to divide procrastination into six personality styles! Don't try to pigonhole yourself with silly labels! Offers very little reletively to other books on the subject, which can suggest many rich, insightful and even clever ways on becoming productive. Good news is - the only way is up.

Book Description

Galaxies are perhaps the most popular of all visual targets that are sought after by visual observers. At present the only way to get up-to-date information, is to query various (often highly technical) speciality books or digging deeply into the Internet. This can be a time consuming and often frustrating task, as the data aren’t often compatible. This book satisfies the need for a modern, comprehensive review in combining the three major aspects: the physical background on the nature and data of galaxies, the relevant instrumentation and viewing techniques, and finally the targets and their individual appearance in telescopes of various apertures. To illustrate the latter, a comprehensive sample of galaxies, including quasars, groups and clusters of galaxies is presented. This combination of theoretical knowledge and practical information guarantees successful observing sessions. The book could become a standard source on galaxy observing for all kinds of amateur observers, from the beginner to the experienced.

5 out of 5 stars most up-to-date, clearly structured reference book on galaxy observing.......2007-08-13

Wolfgang Steinicke was the leading author of the german "Praxishandbuch Deep Sky"(Kosmos 2004), which I like very much. So I started reading his new book on Galaxies with high expectations...and I was not disappointed :
I believe this is the most up-to-date, clearly structured reference book on galaxy observing - satisfying a very broad range of interests.
In three major sections, the authors not only address the needs of the most ambitious observers, but frequently add encouraging hints for beginners as well.
I recommend it A) as a reading book to gain a broader knowledge
and B) as an excellent planning guide when you want to observe MUCH MORE than the most commonly known galaxies.
SECTION I (70 pages) provides a basic understanding of the different types of galaxies and clusters, plus all those data that are important for visually observing them.
Chapter 1 explains different galaxy classification schemes, special cases and pecularities - then chapter 2 introduces pairs, groups and clusters of galaxies and shows their place within the hierarchy of the universe.
Chapter 3 presents a well structured overview for many different types of galaxy catalogs, containing galaxy data and nomenclatures. Advantages/disadvantages of these catalogs are discussed and their data quality is critically judged.
I strongly recommend to study this chapter 3 on catalogs first, because the same presentation structure is followed in the later SECTION III on observing programs.
SECTION II (33 pages) covers the Technical Aspects on observing galaxies.
Key technical instrumentation aspects are only summarized briefly (chap.4), but the Theory of Visual Observation (chap.5), together with practical recommendations on observing, star hopping and observing logs (chap.6) demonstrate the authors very broad experience in finding, identifying faint galaxies and documenting them.
SECTION III (110 pages) on "What to Observe? - The Objects" contains the largest, most valuable part of the book.
An instructive combination of "photo/textual" descriptions presents a large number of objects in the most "objective" way :
Not counting individual galaxies inside groups or clusters (though mentioned in the tables), a total of 500 objects are listed in data tables - following that same structure introduced in SECTION I. Each data table is immediately followed by a separate table with textual descriptions. Around 600 such descriptions are given, based on the visual appearance of each object with different instruments: 1. binocular (if possible),
2. medium aperture telescope(6-10"), 3. large telescope(13-20", sometimes larger).
All these observation descriptions in chapters 7 to 10 stem from renowned observers; e.g. Steve Gottlieb, Steve Coe, beside the authors.
Chapter 7 suggests a variety of Observing Programs, based on
a) M-, NGC/IC- or UGC- CATALOGS
b) Sky Areas and constellations
Chapter 8 suggests selection criteria which are dependent on the characteristics of the individual galaxy; i.e. by sorting them by their distance or by their appearance.
Chapter 9 concentrates on Groups and Clusters; i.e. by listing a) pairs and trios, b) small groups and chains, then c) clusters.
Chapter 10 finally suggests interesting targets "off the beaten path" or in the category of "ultimate challenge".
My reason for mentioning all these details is to demonstrate that this book is quite well organized - especially for all those readers with a minimal amount of patience and learning will.

There is only one unfortunate omission : Springer printed the 1.edition of this unique reference book without a page index !!!
However, after I emailed the author, he swiftly produced an INDEX OF ALL OBJECTS (xls), which can easily be downloaded
from the (Homepage Wolfgang Steinicke).

3 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Information, Poorly Organized.......2007-04-17

This book is filled with a lot of really interesting information on galaxies. However, it is extremely disorganized. My copy of this book is now full of bookmarks to help me find information later. Why? This book has no index. Let me repeat that--this book has NO INDEX. This is an unforgivable sin for any reference book! Furthermore, the subtitle is "and how to observe them." There is not a clue about how to observe galaxies. Instead, the pictures of galaxies are taken through large professional telescopes that for the most part are not even identified. There are observer's descriptions for some galaxies, but most of these are through 20" and larger telescopes. Only a few descriptions are for telescope sizes you might be likely to own.

On the plus side, there are a number of pointers to more information sources, but often these are given in large, undifferentiated lists, instead of the authors making specific recommendations.

Some of the descriptions of galactic structure and evolution are extremely sparse. You won't find a clear definition of Seyfert galaxies, for example.

If you're looking for a definitive work on galaxies, this isn't it. But if you want to learn some interesting facts, you might find this book a fun read. You'll probably come away with some observing ideas as well, but stock up on bookmarks!

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection of essays -- don't miss it!.......1999-06-10

I could not disagree more with the cynical, pseudo-intellectual author of the Kirkus Review of this wonderful book. OF COURSE Mr. De Vinck's essays do not "accurately" depict the harsher realities of childhood -- that is not his objective. The essays read more like fairy tales for adults, spun out of the simple stuff of everyday life -- the small, insignificant events that each of us, no matter how dreadful our childhoods were, still remember and from which we can gain strength and understanding as adults. This book will always have a prominent place on my bookshelf, and I find myself turning to it again and again, whenever I need to be reminded of the important things in life. I highly recommend it, as well as Mr. De Vinck's other books.

Book Description

Since his death almost seventy years ago, C. P. Cavafy has come to be recognized as one of the greatest poets of modern times. Elegiac, deeply sensual, and able to plumb the heart with language of immense richness, Cavafy evokes the great lost classical world of the Mediterranean with unparalleled beauty. Much of his poetry deals with love, specifically homosexual love. It speaks of human passions, the experience common to all mankind of love offered, sought, and lost. His verse is beautiful and embracing, and remains as alive and sensuous as it was when he wrote it.

Theoharis Constantine Theoharis offers a new translation, one that presents Cavafy's work in the thematic order Cavafy wanted it published and emphasizes the tenderness and intensity of the love poems. Gore Vidal's foreword offers an explication of Cavafy's world, a valuable map for readers of what will be embraced as a signal volume of world poetry.

5 out of 5 stars Expatriot longings in Alexandria, the poetry of love.......2001-09-13

Constantine P. Cavafy is one of the most intelligent and elloquent poets of this century, but remains barely known in American. Why is this? Probably because Cavafy is a man and his poems of lust and longing are addressed at other young men. I would never have discovered this amazing man if it were not for an essay about him published in Gore Vidal's "The Last Empire." Cavafy spent his life as a Greek citizen living in Alexandria egypt, and writing about the young men he found there. But beautiful males are far from his only subject. Some of his best poems are written with a technique where he becomes someone else, often a someone historical that has been dead hundreds of years. He writes as if he really were that person, describing what they are feeling, as well as what they see and hear. He can summon with words all the glory and magic of empires long extict, often to a degree of erie detail. These poems made me yearn to experience what he was describing, to be able to see what he can see in his mind. He wrote in Greek, and this book has been translated by Theoharis C. Theoharis. As I don't read Greek, I have no way of knowing how close he came to the original, but I know that what he did translate blew me away. I was transported from my life to the baths and cafes of Alexandria, the palaces of the Ceasars, from Greece in 1900 to the Greece of legend. Cavafy was able to take me places I'd never knew existed. Maybe the best compliment I can give this work is that it didn't just make me think, it made me imagine and dream. Anyone who loves the Greek world should own this book. Five stars just aren't enough.

Product Description

High goals are fine. Author John T. Reed reached several high goals in his life like making a million dollars, getting degrees from West Point and Harvard, being listed in Whos Who in America, appearing on TV shows like 60 Minutes, writing over two dozen well-received books, as well as celebrating a 30-year marriage and raising three fine sons. His experience has also been varied from being the son of an alcoholic father to living in the country, suburbs, and big city to serving a tour in Vietnam to working for a large corporation to successful self-employment and extended bachelorhood. He also failed significantly in various pursuits and thereby learned many important lessons. Succeeding will tell you how to achieve high success, but it will constantly remind you to go for enough, not more; and to pursue what suits you, not just some goal chosen solely based on how much you think it will impress others. Strategies, tactics, tips, and tricks on how to succeed. Lessons learned by one man in his 50 plus years. The book focuses on choosing the right spouse and career. Unlike most success books that encourage you to choose whatever extremely high goals your heart desires, this book emphasizes the importance of choosing the right goals. If you choose your goals carefully, you are far more likely to achieve them and far more likely to be happy when you do.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-03-02

Mr. Reed recommends you read this one first. The reason is sound. One should be clear on one's objectives, capabilities, ethics and character before starting on a demanding project with large financial risk if not executed with skill and diligence. Reed describes his life and how his views on several things including real estate developed. At one time he overreached because of unclearly understood objectives (what is enough) only to get wiped out by the Texas meltdown and the 1986 tax changes that dropped income property values by about 25% overnight. He recovered, and did so without cheating anybody or running a shady series of infomercials with deceptive and deceptively priced products.

    Book Description

The fascinating stories behind more than a thousand best-loved songs from the last 50 years are explored in this entertaining collection. Intriguing background and biographical information on each song and its artist — from Elvis and Fatboy Slim to Leonard Cohen and Pulp — is included alongside more than 400 rare, full-color photographs of the musicians. Keeping in line with the way that iPods and other portable mp3 players have changed the way people listen to music — with personalized playlists and mixes just a few clicks away — this collection places more emphasis on specific songs than entire albums. The eclectic mix of profiled songs are randomly ordered, similar to a playlist, widening listeners' horizons while educating them on a variety of styles and artists.

In the iPod era, it seems like everybody and their mother has a book out about "essential playlists," as if you can condense a band like the Beatles into 20 randomized gems. Interesting though books like this are, none are worth owning any more than one should buy a tracklist for a compilation CD. So why should this massive title be any different?

The answer is simple. In its size lies content... Creswell says something about each song. It's more like a book of brief stories, as opposed to the bound grocery lists similar titles offer... you get recommendations and reasons why. See, this book is like talking to your friend about music... he'll tell you he's just discovered Portishead, you'll share that you've lately been really into Neil Young's latest, and perhaps after you'll go home and check out what the other was hyping.

There is plenty of hyping going on in here, too, with 1001 tracks waiting for you to discover them. Neither the songs nor the artists are all the same old standards... you'll find, for example, Pearl Jam's "Alive," but I was all the more pleased to find a young woman named Thea Gilmore listed within... a name which might be more well known in England, but is not as well known here in the US. If you're looking for the Great American Songbook, you'll be disappointed. Of course, if you're looking for songs that classic, that well known, what more new can be written? The title states that these are great songs. This is, of course, debateable, but what is not debateable is that these are not necessarily the greatest. This book isn't meant to be a top 1001 of all songdom... it is meant to simply be 1001 songs that the author feels are truly great. I'd recommend this book to any avid music fan, anyone who enjoys learning about music they didn't know before, and anyone open to hearing that which may not be familiar... that is the niche it serves. If you need a countdown, look elsewhere, and if you can't look past the classics, Michael Buble will have a new CD soon enough.

    5 out of 5 stars One star?.......2006-11-02

I love this book. I rate it five stars because it tells the stories behind all those great songs. It's answered a lot of questions I've had. I know I'm not one to judge a book that has mostly oldies- I'm only twelve years old- but it's a great book and I recommend it to music experts and newcomers alike.

It would seem impossible for a book running close to 900 pages written by an "expert" with over 30 years experience in his field to be total rubbish, but "1001 Songs: The Great Songs of All Time", comes surprisingly close. Let's begin with the title. I can grant the "1001" without taking the time to count them (No, they're not numbered... nor in any discernable order for that matter) but then things get dodgy.
Leaving aside the questionable grammar of the subtitle, Mr. Cresswell seems to believe that "all time" begins almost exclusively with the rock era.Look in the, woefully inadequate, index and you'll find Britney Spears, but not Sondheim; Radio Birdman is here-but no Richard Rodgers; You will search in vain for Irving Berlin or Cole Porter. Surely at some point in "all time" they wrote something "great"! But, in a way this is just as well, since my random "landings" on such non-rock era pieces as Rhapsody In Blue (hardly a "song") and Over the Rainbow, are so error filled that they're laughable. (For the record, Gershwin's "Swanee" was not introduced in "the world's first musical film" in 1919/20-when George would have been 21-but in a stage show. And OTR was not written as a disguised protest song-Harburg never disguised his protests-but precisely as a book song for that particular place in the film).
Further problems evolve with even finding any given song except by dumb luck. A case could be made for indexing the above Over the Rainbow under Judy Garland, it was her signature song and neither Harold Arlen nor E.Y. Harburg, the writers, make the cut. But to list I'm a Believer solely under the Monkees, when its composer, a fellow named Diamond, has recorded it numerous times, completely belies the title of the book since we are now not even examining "Songs" but recordings.
Space prevents much further comment so let's end on a positive note. With Amazon's discount, the book makes an affordable, and not unattractive, doorstop.

1 out of 5 stars Too mutch filler!.......2002-01-18

This book is not very useful. The only think worth mentioning is degreeing the cam. It includes no REAL information on selecting a cam. The important information from this book is also available with a whole lot more in the book:

The Step-By-Step Guide to Engine Blueprinting : Practical Methods for Racing and Rebuilding

    2 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2001-10-27

The book merely gives you what the title says, nothing on what to do if you want to set your cams for torque or high-end power. If that's what you're after this is not the book.

4 out of 5 stars Great for camshaft selection and engine building.......2000-07-06

This is a great book for engine builders or amature mechanics that are looking into purchasing a new camshaft for their engine. It first starts out by explaining the basics of how a camshaft works and all the terminology that is used. It is very complete in this section and most people would have to read it a few times to understand it. Then it goes into duration of camshafts which tells the reader how to select the right camshaft for their desired operating RPM ranges. I feel that there was almost too much information on this subject for it goes way into the physics of why camshafts build power in these ranges. The plus part of this is that it goes into all types of engines, overhead cams, duel valves, four valves, etc. The most helpful section to me was the checking the camshaft section. It explains how to take an exsisting camshaft and pull it from the engine then inspect it to see if you need a new camshaft or if you can work with what is exsisting, thus saving money! The book then goes into timing principles which help in understanding what goes on but it is a little too simple to derive enough information to time a camshaft in the engine before assemlby and running. But the book then explains many of the problems with camshafts that can be solved, not by the home mechanic...but instead by his/her credit card. The last few chapters go into great detail on timing a camshaft using a degree wheel and by finding TDC using various methods. The final chapter is about testing the engine after its running and in the vehicle. This is a vague chapter as not all of the problems it explains can only be the camshaft, this could be misleading to an amature mechanic. I would definetly recommend this book to anyone building an engine for the first time, or anyone looking to do a camshaft swap into an exsisting engine.
