5 out of 5 stars The grand tome of magic! .......2007-08-18

I would call this the big shazzam of modern magical spellbooks. This book contains a wealth of information and belongs on every witch, conjuror, powwow doctor or root-workers book shelves.

So much informaiton, it would take a while to get through. However, this is more of a "cook book" type of spell book where you can easily flip through to the information you need at a particular time. This is one of the most handy aspects of this book. It is easy to read and follow.

I also like the fact that you have many difference spell options for each situation you are facing.... That way if one technique will not suit you in your current situation, you can try another option. I also like the magical formulary in the back of the book containing many magical recipees to make your own potions, oils and floor washes... contains many traditional and proven formulas.

Great information and highly recommened!

Much Love & Many Blessings,
Thorn Nightwind

I love this book and refer to it often. It has sooo much information! It is not just for the Magikal, but for anyone interested in "spell casting".
I also own the Witchcraft book and with the 2 of them, I feel they are the only 2 books I ever need for referencing my information.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Book; Sure to Become an Occult Classic.......2007-06-27

One of the best collection of spells in (or out) of print. The first section is very helpful for those new to magic. It is well-written, organized, and well-compiled; a great investment for any witch or magician.
An excellent book by a great author, sure to become a classic work.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Book of Spells. Seriously........2007-05-23

If you enjoy spellwork that heavily utilizes herbs (even Hoodoo), this book is for you. For the price of all of the other spellbooks out there that only have 40 or so in them, you get a much better deal for your money when you buy this book. I know some people are offended by some of the content (some of the spells are "manipulative"), and I understand that. I do believe in karma and not doing any manipulative magick on anyone, so I steer away from those spells in the book. I do appreciate that Illes put them in the book to show that magick really is neither black or white; "it is both, because nature is both." The choice is there for those that wish to use them, but it is their choice alone. Back to the book itself...It may be a bit more expensive, but it is _definitely_ worth it. I bought mine almost a year ago, and still use it often today. It has a prominent spot in my witchy library, and I know you'll treasure it, too, when you buy it.

Book Description

Be all over “minuscule.” Score big with “curvaceous.” Hit “trireme” out of the park. From the authorities behind the Scripps National Spelling Bee comes a comprehensive illustrated book on the endangered art of spelling.

Written for ages 9 and up, How to Spell Like a Champ shows kids how to build word lists, and organize and study them most effectively. How to gain knowledge of etymology, word roots, and spelling patterns from English and other languages. Here are commonly missed words and word patterns— and those feisty (who said “i before e except after c”?) words that don’t fit any pattern. Synonyms, antonyms, eponyms. Suffixes and prefixes. Plus, a whole chapter of word searches and other skill-building games enforces the lessons learned. The book is also a spelling bee primer for the ten million kids who participate in Scripps spelling bees on the local level. It tells what to study, how to study, how much to study. Readers learn what to expect in a bee—whether a classroom contest or the Scripps National Final—and how they can make it through each round by asking the right questions and using their well-honed instincts. Included is an audio CD featuring Dr. Jacques Bailly himself, the official voice of the National Spelling Bee as heard on ABC, ESPN, and in the movies.

Spelling bees are hot stuff: The National Spelling Bee is one of ESPN’s most talked about annual broadcasts, plus bees are the subject of a Tony award–winning Broadway musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee; a bestselling novel, Bee Season; an Oscar-nominated documentary, Spellbound; and a forthcoming major motion picture starring Laurence Fishburne, Akeelah and the Bee.

Today’s word: “estimable.”

5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2007-04-06

How to Spell Like a Champ is an excellent book and really helps students with spelling. My son read this book, and became very motivated. He decided to participate in the school spelling bee. He learned excellent study habits and how words with different language origins have different rules. This book includes word lists, stories of past spelling bee contestants at the national level, and includes a CD that puts you in the life of a student competing at the spelling bee from the class bee to the final round of the National Spelling Bee.

Three authors were involved in writing this book: Carolyn Andrew, Barrie Trinkle, and Paige Kimble. Carolyn Andrew's son won the national spelling bee in 1994, Barrie Trinkle won it in 1973, and Paige Kimble won it in 1981. My son was so motivated, and learned so much, he worked hard, and in result, won his school spelling bee, and got to compete in the regional spelling bee. In the regionals, he placed third. THIRD!!! I WAS SO HAPPY FOR HIM! I know he is excited about next year's spelling bee. You HAVE to buy this book. I would also highly recommend watching the movie Spellbound.

5 out of 5 stars Great help to get to the Nationals.......2007-03-11

This book was actually very helpful to me. Not knowing what would it lead me to, i joined our school spelling bee club in December, last year. I had no idea that i would actually be in our school spelling bee. Then, we had our winter break; and over the winter break, i actually saw a re-run of the 2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee. And i was so amazed, yet motivated at the same time. That's when I decided, I want to go to the National Spelling Bee.

Yes, it was the last week of December, and I hardly had any time. I mean, people who go all the way to D.C. study starting from the summer right? So just to get a start, I bought this book, How to Spell like a Champ. This book taught me a lot! The CD also did too. But the book was great...not only did it give you tips, but it let you live through the National Spelling Bee, and it included a bunch of words throughout the whole book! And there were so many interesting facts on every other page. It wasn't like those boring non-fiction books. And so, even though I started this whole spelling interest this year, in January, I'm glad I did.

And the best part is, I'm really going to the Nationals this year. =) And it only took two months of studying. Did I mention that this book was a big help?

3 out of 5 stars It depends on what you're looking for.......2006-07-01

I'm a ceremonial magickian. If you are a beginner stay away from this book, unless you happen to be a beginner who believes

1>reading a book will make you a magickian
2>reading a spell written by someone you don't know, with no real knowledge of what you're doing will help you
3>having a book with a pretty purple cover makes you look cool

This is an encylopedia of MANY magickal traditions and an explanation of none.

I've been MEGA skeptical of "books of shadow" that contain a bunch of words that rhyme and claim that THAT's all you need to perform magick. This book has alot of that.

If, on the other hand, you are looking for a brief overview of many types of magick, with the intent of being more educated on it OR BUYING A BOOK ON THE TYPE THAT INTERESTS YOU THAT REALLY TEACHES YOU SOMETHING, this book is perfect.

Ms. Whippler's anecdotes of her own experiences are pretty interesting (her encounter with the "angel of death" (who I assume to be an Anti-Raphael, given what she was attempting to do) is quite a good lesson on the dangers of dabbling and unbalancing things

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR ALL MAGES.......2005-12-06

When I first picked up this book, I already had an extensive knowledge of Magic and the occult. But what I though was extensive was WAY off. This purple little paperback has been one of my greatest reference materials to this date. The information covers such an extensive variety of Magick and the occult that it could easily be substituted for ones whole library.
I was skeptical when I first received it as a gift, so I didn't really bother with it for about a month. But ever since I picked it up, I haven't been able to put it down. . .I enjoyed this book so much that I intend to but others from this author on the mysteries of the Qaballa.
Whether your a Christian, Wiccan, Pagan, or even a Satanist, this book is DEFINITELY worth the money. . . .

3 out of 5 stars Sourcebook Series.......2005-09-07

Well, it was not what I expected, so I was a little disappointed. Nothing negative, mind you, just not my cup of tea and was not what I needed as far as a resource I could go to often:)

5 out of 5 stars An excellent start.......2005-03-26

To anyone with a genuine interest in the craft, this is a great book to start with. Yes, it seems to switch topics alot, but thats the beauty of it...take what you like, and skip what you dont. This is to give you a little taste of different things so you get an idea of maybe which path you want to follow. I think its a great starter because it takes little bits of many many topics and puts it in one place...so instead of buying 14(or more?) different books and only liking half of them, you have one book, and if you dont like a certain chapter...dont go back to it. Myself, I use this book as a reference for many things and it was very helpful to me.
People seem to be expecting a spell book...this is not it. This is informational, and an excellent start.

Though already developing a successful career in SF with such heady novels as Chthon and Omnivore, Piers Anthony did not reach brand-name status until he cooked up some fantasy in 1977. And it was cheerful, humorous fantasy at that, as in his first Xanth series novel, A Spell for Chameleon. The book's young hero, Bink, is without magical powers in a world ruled entirely by magic. Worse still, if he doesn't discover his own magical talent soon, he will be forever banished from his homeland. Naturally, it takes an epic quest for Bink to learn what his unique talent truly is--and perhaps to win the girl of his dreams as well. A Spell for Chameleon was the very first of Anthony's bestselling (and still ongoing) humorous fantasy series. Noteworthy for their outrageous word puns and bizarre characters, the Xanth books are a light yet often satisfying brew, especially when compared with the author's sometimes nihilistic and ultraviolent hard SF. --Stanley Wiater

Book Description

Xanth was the enchanted land where magic ruled--where every citizen had a special spell only he could cast. That is, except for Bink of North Village. He was sure he possessed no magic, and knew that if he didn't find some soon, he would be exiled. According to the Good Magician Humpfrey, the charts said that Bink was as powerful as the King or even the Evil Magician Trent. Unfortunately, no one could determine its form. Meanwhile, Bink was in despair. If he didn't find his magic soon, he would be forced to leave....

5 out of 5 stars Classic "trilogy" !.......2007-09-08

This was one of my favorite series of books. Wonderfully entertaining, I often read the books in less than a day.

4 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Get magic, or get the arse.

The world of Xanth is full of magical creatures, and all the humans there are also magic wielders of one sort or another, from Aces to Deuces, to borrow some Wild Cards terminology i.e. powerful to useless.

The boy Bink has no magic, and sets out to find out why, on the way encountering the titular character, a woman with multiple forms who ends up having the hots for him.

Adventure ensues, and Bink does discover his own magical ability, which is a negative one, so tricky to find out about.

5 out of 5 stars Harry Potter of its day--Started my love of reading!.......2007-08-20

I would be very surprised if J.K. Rowling hasn't read the Xanth series. Her puns and plays on words and her magical world that coexists with the world of Muggles draws many parallels to Piers Anthony's world of Xanth and the world of Mundania. These books could EASILY be brought to life on the screen, and are very appropriate for the younger set--to most degrees (I wouldn't say so with his Adept series, though).

I first started reading this series when my older cousin gave them to me back in 1987--I read about 10 or 11 of them before finally petering out--because I think Anthony started to wear out with them as well. Still, these are some of the first real books I read, and I devoured each one with absolute relish. They are witty, adventurous, and have a light-hearted feel that many other fantasy series lack.

Highly recommended for tweens and above!

Jason Sipe, Hood Press Books, Tales of Madness: Seven Horror Stories by Edgar Allan Poe

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable fantasy.......2007-05-28

Pier Anthony's Xanth series gets off to a terrific start with "A Spell for Chameleon." Bink is a young man who doesn't possess any magic, which in the world of Xanth is a problem. If he can't show some ability, then he'll be exiled to the non-magical world - Mundania. Bink is advised to consult the Great Magician Humfrey, who has the power to reveal what is hidden. If Bink really does have magic, then Humfrey should be able to help. The journey to Humfrey's castle is fraught with perils, and this leg represents only the beginning of Bink's adventures.

I'm a newbie to fantasy novels, but several people recommended this book to me, and the Xanth series sounded intriguing. This first novel has everything I'd expect - a likeable protagonist, a journey that is constantly thwarted, and a few good plot twists. What I enjoyed most was the Xanth world, which is filled with creative touches, as well as Anthony's jokey tone. The book does have quite a few puns (Xanth's wilderness is crowded with numerous "punny" trees, including shoe trees); however, the humor doesn't hinder the story. All in all "A Spell for Chameleon" was an enjoyable read, and one that has convinced me to try the second book in the series.

4 out of 5 stars This Book Was Good.......2007-05-18

I thought that this was a good book. It had me constantly thinking about what was going to happen next, it had surprises that I didn't even expect, and it was very descriptive that the images constantly stayed in my head till I finished the book. This book will keep you reading until you turn the last page; you won't want to put it down.
I liked the book because it has just the right amount of everything that you would look for in a book: mystery, murder, comedy, and suspense. It also had lots of questions that really made me think, and as I continued to read, it answered them all. There are few twists in the book that you wouldn't expect, most are good but it really depends on the way that you look at it. I thought the comedy in the book was great, but you have to understand what is going on and also have to have a good sense of humor.
The book is very interesting until the very end and you want to stop reading. The story is based on a young man in his late twenties named Bink who is to be exiled from Xanth, unless he can show that he has a magical talent. So he sets out on an adventure to discover if he has a magic talent or not. Along the way he makes friends, enemies, and comes close to death. This book is an adventure waiting to unfold.
I think the author did a great job of compiling all of the events into an imaginative story that has you wondering what's going to happen on every page. There is minimal inappropriate language and some sexual references, but it should be fine for anyone that can handle it that isn't too immature. I suggest that if you like this book that you will enjoy the sequels like I did; they are just as equally exciting and just as descriptive. I suggest this book to anyone that has a good imagination and who likes to ponder interesting yet difficult questions because this would be the book for you.

The Good Spell Book is a delightful little collection of Romany folklore, spells, charms, and cures that focus on the good things in life--love, luck, health, and happiness. The spells are simple and require only basic ingredients, such as a ribbon or a candle. This simplicity allows for a singular focus on the outcome of the spell, whether it's relieving a headache or finding a lost pet. With its rustic charm, The Good Spell Book stands out from other spell books; it looks like someone's diary with flower petals, photographs, and even postage stamps stuck between the pages. Whether you read The Good Spell Book out of curiosity or to add happy spells to your own collection, you're sure to enjoy the feel of this well-crafted volume. --Brian Patterson

This is a beautiful little book that you will love even looking over and seeing on your shelf. It throws in some history, and spells. I love how it give you spells and explains where some of the things come from.

5 out of 5 stars Love, love, love this book!.......2007-09-30

I decided to get this book after reading all the glowing reviews, and am glad I did. I am not a witch, or into doing spells, but I've always been interested in the occult. I get books like these just to toy around with the idea of doing a spell. If I feel it is a simple spell and does not harm anyone, I would do it. I have purchased a few other spell books, but none came as good as this one. First of all the book is so nicely laid out, it is very cute and has an old-world feel to it. I get the idea Ms. Kemp was going for. She wanted it to look classicaly and elegantly ancient. The cover is a very strong, hard cover. You can just tell that no expense was spared in the quality of making the book. It is not flimsy or cheap. Now what it is I really like about this book is, the spells are so simple AND there is such a wide variety! There are 5 sections: love, money, health, pets, wealth, and happiness. It has so many interesting, easy-to-do spells. I remember in the pet section, there was even a spell to heal your pet or return your lost pet. I searched for a while for a spell book that was easy and had good content and I finally found it in this lovely, little book! This will always be near me and I will treasure it to the day I die! I highly reccomend this book. You won't be dissapointed!

4 out of 5 stars good old-fashioned folk magic........2007-08-16

If you're a fan of simple folk magic like I am, you will probably like this book. In it, it has many different cures and charms from gypsy lore and such, which is quite different from what is in the spellbook market today. I feel that the book could've been bigger, but the artwork and cover detailing added a nice touch to it.

Overall, this is a great gift for yourself or those who like old-fashioned folk magic and lore from outside of the US.

5 out of 5 stars Great Spells.......2007-06-27

A Great book for those interested in folk magic, Gypsy magic, and beginners to witchcraft and magic. The section on Love spells is the best in the book, and the most useful. Great book with great spells.

5 out of 5 stars small quick simple reference for spells.......2006-03-29

This book is a small quick reference for spells. It has several spells in it that i didnt know but a few that i did. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in doing good work. Most items the spells require you already have lyin around the house. The spells are simple to follow and are good!. my son and I both love this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......1999-10-05

This book has it all. It is a must have for any wizard. With the other 3 books you will have thousands of spells that are easy to find and understand.

4 out of 5 stars Useful but unbalanced.......1999-06-25

The breakdown of the spells into various groups helps players check spells fast.

But beware, play balance of the spells are poorly done for nearly all spells cast by Elminster, Khelbun, Seven sisters and the major characters in FR.

The rest are alright execpt for some balantly munchkin ones (unidirectional wall of force??). Discretion required.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Cool.......1999-06-25

A good compilation of spells. I like the tables in the front of this (the first) book. I understand this is not meant to be a rule book, but some help on where to find rules on chronomancers would be nice, since there are a fair number of spells for them in here. Recommend getting 1st and 4th books before obtaining rest so that you get the tables and index.

5 out of 5 stars very useful. great spell tables and specialties........1999-05-25

this volume was the pinacle of the spell compendium. It has spells listed in dozens of different lists with different themes. It includes many specialties from dragon magazine. it also includes optional rules like psionic enchantments and spell paths. A+ material.

5 out of 5 stars The cream of the crop........1999-05-11

Anyone who thinks that this book is redundant, or just repeats spells, is insane. Thousands of spells were collected from every adventure, and magazine to make this the most complete listing of spells avalible. Many have also been updated to work with AD&D rules.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good book on white magic.......2007-08-22

This is a pretty good book on white magic. I enjoyed the spells presented in this book. The book is also hard back edition with string ties on the end you can use to keep the book closed and safe from damage.

I really liked the sealed spells presented in this book. I thought that was a great idea of the publisher.

Overall, the information that was presented, I thought was excellent! I refer to this book from time to time. The reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because of the following reason:

1. Not enough spells .... The book concentrated on a lot of pretty pictures, when they could have included more spells. This probably helped the book sell a lot more copies, but content wise, it suffered because of this because more spells could have been included. The book is very pleasing to the eye though!

It has been a while since I have seen anything new on the market from the author ... I hope that she continues to write more in the future.

Much Love & Many Blessings,
Thorn Nightwind

1 out of 5 stars unpratical.......2007-03-18

the spells are written in a way that make them look "magical"
but at the end you will hardly use any of them

i recommend you not to buy this
in fact that are many FREE spells available on the internet
this book does not teach you how to create your own spells or have you properly understanding the nature of it.
so might as well just look it up on the net

4 out of 5 stars cute.......2006-12-12

This is one of the first spells books I ever bought (in 2001).
I read thru it last night, and here it is, 5 years later:
Its a cute little book, illustrated, colorful. Something you would buy for a teenager or a person interested but intimidated by magic / witchcraft. There is nothing intimidating about this book.
There is also very little real information in it.
However, it's cute with its black hardcover and silver tying ribbon and silver writing. Guess that's why it caught my eye 5 years ago..

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful first witchcraft book!.......2003-10-16

This is a wonderful book for any one! It was simply written, cute and UNDERSTANDABLE. We bought a different book ( our first one ) and it was a mistake. It was extremely confusing, having way to much information mixed together. This book has a wonderful author, ( who seems to understand what its like for a beginner trying to read a complecated book ), and she's made the spells simple and easy to follow. Definately a keeper!

2 out of 5 stars Eye candy.......2003-08-01

Yes, this book is pretty. YES, it is a compilation of spells et al primary designed to show the author's ability to compile things.
NO, it's not very useful. These spells are based on some silly ideas about how magick works, and while this book may make a good coffee table decoration, it's not a workbook and not useful as practice.

Book Description

At long last, Rachel's powers have arrived and she's a bona fide get-your-broom-ready witch! And it's happened just in time. No Manhattan for her this summer—she's spending her vacation at Camp Wood Lake.

But she's having some serious issues:

Mosquitoes in the Adirondacks are incredibly thirsty.

Her stepmom keeps sending embarrassing feminine hygiene care packages.

She accidentally zapped away all her clothes.

And there's a backstabber in her cabin intent on making life miserable.

Good thing Rachel's a witch.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better........2007-09-01

I really enjoyed the first two books and I was really excited about reading this third book. I guess this didn't quite meet the quality of the other two books. It seems very predictable and didn't have all that much happening in the story. It was still something fun to read to pass the time.

5 out of 5 stars Spells and Sleeping Bags.......2007-08-24

I think that this book was even more funny than the other two... possibly. All I know is that I laughed almost constantly, and yet towards the end I wanted to cry...

This was such a good book. I think this is the last book in the series, and I'm kind of sad to see it ending. But it couldn't be a happier ending... Well, actually, it could have. I think that Rachel should tell Raf what was going on, but that's something that could be solved on it's own. The ending was almost perfect :P

3 out of 5 stars Dissappointed.......2007-08-23

I was so syked to learn Spells ans Sleeping bags was comming out, because I loved the last two, they kept getting better and better. So as you can probably tell I had high expectations for this one. The Cons: The book was too predictable. Liana's "Big secret" wasn't really big at all, I knew what it was from the very start. In the beginning Rachel kept going on and on about she didnt care what happened while she was at camp because she was a witch, like we didnt read the last one. The Pros: I was kept on the edge of my seat with Rachel and Raf, and was very sad to see Miri turn dark, giving Rachel the cold shoulder at every turn. I am not going to say this was a bad book because I did enjoy most of it, but If you expecting this book to out-do the other ones dont assume it will. II personally liked Frogs and French kisses better.

5 out of 5 stars So Sad to See it End.......2007-06-30

Oh nooooo! I can't believe this is the end!! I just stayed up all night, reading this book and I can't believe how amazing it was. Let's just say, I TOTALLY knew Liana's secret from the beginning. Throughout, I was pining for Rachel and Raf to get back together, and I couldn't believe all the things that go wrong on their trip. I was in tears when Miri "turned to the dark side" and wouldn't believe Rachel. As soon as Rachel and Liana "did the deed" I couldn't believe Rachel had actually done it. I WISH THERE WERE 10 MORE!!!! :(

5 out of 5 stars The Best Book!.......2007-02-26

This is by far the best book in the trilogy. Though the first book was amazing, Spells and Sleeping Bags was just better! By the way, I may talk about the first and second book in here, so if you haven't read them, just look at my rating! I won't give away the third one, though. I was a little disappointed with the second one, after all, I was pulling for Raf and Rachel to finally get back together. But I was so happy when she discovered she was a witch, like her mom and Miri. In the third book, Rachel and Miri (and their step sister, Prissy) head off to camp in upstate New York. Rachel immediatly makes friends, but what seems like the perfect summer at camp doesn't last long. Miri isn't enjoying camp, Raf and Rachel can't seem to get back together, and there's a girl in Bunk Fifteen who there to make life miserable for Rachel, and who has a big secret of her own. The only problem with this book is that it's the last one. I want her to keep writing them so I can keep reading. It's an amazing ending to the trilogy and a really fun read.

Anyone looking to mend a broken heart, turn enemies into friends, or find a guardian angel will find encouragement in this highly inspirational and immensely fun guide, which reinvents old-world spiritual rituals and time-honoured traditions with a down-to-earth, new-age spin. Sister Karol first briefly introduces each prayer ritual, then provides a list of simple materials and step-by-step instructions for carrying it out. She draws from a variety of spiritual traditions but focuses throughout on the power of ritualized personal prayer and positive thinking.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest books I have ever read!!.......2007-08-05

I gave this book 5 stars Because it helped bring me back to Catholicism. It is a very interesting book, I love how it talks about getting in touch with God & his creation, & how God is all around us. Despite what some may say this Book is a Christian book & it has helped me to feel closer to God. I have read it all the way through & really enjoyed reading it. I believe that the problems that some have with this book is the way it is written. Sister wrought this book so that people from different religions could enjoy it & apply it. If you really read it & apply it to our Catholic Faith, you will see that what Sister calls spells are really just prayers, the rituals are just prayers with props. I love that we can be Christians & still be in touch with nature (BIG THUMBS UP)
God bless

1 out of 5 stars Karol is not a real Catholic Nun!.......2007-05-25

Don't be fooled into thinking that "Sister" Karol is a real Catholic nun. She still claims to be, but the "order" she belongs to, Sisters for Christian Charity, is not a canonical order. It has no official standing in the Catholic Church. It is a non-heirarchical, ecumenical group of disgruntled and heretical women who will not admit that they do not really believe in Church teachings. A more honest thing for her to do would be to leave the Catholic Church, but who would buy her book without the pretense that a Catholic nun would write a book of spells. The "naughtiness" of a dissenting nun is the drawing card. Don't buy anything she writes, literally or figuratively.

1 out of 5 stars Corrupted Catholicism .......2005-05-26

Where to begin? First of all this book will lead you to nowhere. Don't do anything in private that you can't do during Mass!!!

This book taken Catholic Faith out of context. ALL efficacious sacraments instituted by CHRIST, entrusted to the CHURCH, to impart grace through the HOLY SPIRIT are contained within the Church. She has made a corrupted crazy quilt of its sacraments, history, tradition, magisterium and Sacred Scripture i.e., "Blessed be the name of the Lord." not "Blessed Be."

She has simulated and invented her own sacraments. Catholics should go to confession if they have fallen for the teachings of this book. Of course, she pretties it up and makes it funny. That is what makes it so acceptable to the uninitiated.

I don't carve candles (or use black ones like she recommends)nor, cast spells. She even calls the devotion to Saint Anthony a "SPELL". THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SPELL AND A DEVOTION!

No self-respecting Catholic (or witch for that matter) could stomach this book.

We do not choose days to make holy. They are all holy. Get a good calendar of the saints feast days and FOLLOW THE LITURGY OF THE HOURS AND THE LITURGICAL YEAR OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. Make devotions to saints and Our Blessed Mother. You will be enriched beyond your wildest dreams. Learn to pray the rosary and the Divine Mercy. Attend Mass regularly and go to confession. Receive Our Blessed Lord as often as possible. Your heart will be so light and happy! Be charitable and reach out with the Mercy of Christ to others under the auspices of the Church (so that they will be attracted to Christ, not you). Seek the gifts of the Holy Spirit and His fruits as well.

!!Important!! When buying books about Roman Catholicism, always purchase books that contain the Nihil Obstat and Imprimatur (look inside the front cover). You can't go wrong.

Do not give this book those who are young in the faith. It is a homogenous highway to Hell! There is nothing funny, cute or sensible about it. Don't waste your time on this. St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray. And, do thou oh Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan and all the evil spirits who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.

This is scary stuff because it is packaged so attractively. It even tries to imitate a small, sacred book with satin book marks and gold leaf.

Here's the antidote:
THE CATHOLIC HOME--CELEBRATIONS AND TRADITIONS FOR HOLIDAYS, FEAST DAYS AND EVERY DAY BY MEREDITH GOULD--is an excellent book carried by AMAZON.COM. On the flyleaf you will see the Imprimatur and Nihil Obstat (that means the doctrine contained within is correct). IT IS A WONDERFUL GIFT FOR ANYONE AND ANY OCCASION.

Don't settle for a counterfeit like Sister Karol's Book of Spells and Blessings. If you are going to Mass at least once weekly, you will not have a desire for these bogus rituals. Come on! You deserve the Real Thing.

1 out of 5 stars A witch nun's get rich scheme.......2004-01-30

...is the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this in the bookstore. How despicable. A Catholic nun, a woman supposedly sworn to the service and prayerful devotion of Christ concocting this pagan nonsense. I spent a fair amount of time reading over it - (there isn't much here, don't expect much of a read) and slammed it down with disgust. But then I looked deeper into the author and some of her other writings and it's plain what's at work here. Buy it if you need airy fairy feel good nonsensical pap for your jaded post modern mind grown too cynical for true religion. All others save your money.

5 out of 5 stars Very inclusive.......2002-10-04

Like the other reviewers, I too was drawn to this little book that felt so nice in my hand at the local bookstore. I expected to see candle rituals, incantations and the like from a pagan point of view. Imagine my surprise when the lovely blue and gold placemarker ribbons opened to the "Nuns' Birthday Blessing" ritual. A lapsed Catholic with decidedly pagan leanings, I took it right to the register and then home.

The book continued to surprise me with its depth of information and scope of Christian, Jewish, and Pagan traditions. How nice to see a Catholic nun bringing ancient wisdom to light in a loving, warm and accessible way. Sister Karol goes beyond the mere compilation of rituals to focus on the importance behind their purpose and function in our lives.

I like this book so much, I keep it out in my living room, where it's continually discovered by my friends and family. Pass this one on to your friends.

5 out of 5 stars This is a cute book! with spells that work.......2006-12-09

Note**** You have to get your own ingredients they don't come with the book. This book is small, cute and has simple spells that really do work. You can easily buy any of the indredients at your local grocery store or just look in your kitchen cabinet. They are fun to do and the one that I did try Landed me a job. Good Luck have fun I hope All your fun spells come true (with harm to none)

4 out of 5 stars Not too Bad . . . Not too Good.......2006-03-31

First of all, this book is not about black magic. So any one who wants to kill someone, don't check this one out. The spells are more about female empowerment and getting even with people over petty little things such as road rage and "Oh, you cheated on me!" I mean, being cheated on isn't little, but the spells in this book aren't serious enough for that type of revenge.

This book was actually a little disappointing because in truth none of the spells are really "naughty." It's sort of like a good girl's way of attempting to get even with someone and then coming off really merciful and nice anyway. In fact, I honestly haven't found any of the spells within this book useful. Other people's published grimoires have become so useless to me that I write my own spells now.

Look out for my own published grimoire soon!

--- The Dark Lady

3 out of 5 stars Not seriously for the Wiccan tradition BUT...........2006-01-21

I see these types of books as a little similar to the hit TV series " Charmed ". That is : a lot of fun and cutesy, but not really based on anything to do with the Wiccan tradition.

The book is a lot of fun, very cute, and with some very basic ideas, but kind of teenage in it's style. Not much use if you have been studying the Wiccan tradition at all, but light dribbly entertainment. Sort of " bachelorette night " type standard.

4 out of 5 stars sweet little book.......2005-09-12

Quite simple and easy spells, some of which I personally wouldnt do (you're the one I want) cuz it messes with other people's free will, but other than that I am pleasantly surprised with both content and presentation.

4 out of 5 stars Cute - For Witches, not Wiccans.......2005-08-05

I saw this book at Barnes & Nobles and thought it was funny. I like little books even if they aren't very practical. I am amused by the "don't buy this" comments from some reviewers. First of and foremost - all Witches are NOT wiccan. Witchcraft and wicca are NOT the same thing. Life is not all love and light and positive. Sometimes it's painful, seething anger, and darkness. When you are reeling from a recent breakup or other emotional trauma, the IDEA of turning the ex into a toad is enough to put a smile on your face and put you back in the light. This is humor people - try some!
