Book Description
At first, The Hunt Club had a membership of one: private investigator Wyatt Hunt. Since then, others have joined with a common interest in obtaining justice. One member, inspector Devin Juhle, has just caught a major case: the shooting of a sixty-three-year old federal judge and his twentysomething mistress...
While Juhle works, Hunt plays, hooking up with TV star and legal analyst Andrea Parisi. But before Hunt knows it, Juhle's case will be of great interest to the members of The Hunt Club. Especially to Hunt himself-as Andrea's card is found in the wallet of one of the victims.
Customer Reviews:
Okay, but I'll take Dismas Hardy anytime!.......2007-10-06
John Lescroart is an excellent author. He's very good at setting a mood or a scene, and let you feel as though you're there with the characters. It was the same in this novel, but I just never felt connected with the story, or the new cast of characters, some of which are also side characters in many of the Dismas Hardy/Abe Glitzky novels.
Read this novel if for no other reason than to keep tabs on some of Lescroarts other main characters. Otherwise, can't wait for Lescroarts next novel.
When the S.F.P.D. just isn't getting the job done..........2007-09-01
I've read three books by Lescroart: "The Motive," "The First Law" and this book. The Hunt Club is the best of the bunch. Set in San Francisco, it follows a P.I., Wyatt Hunt, and his police officer buddy on the trail of a double murderer. I thought Wyatt Hunt was interesting and liked his background and character development. I agree that the book drags in the middle, like the other two Lescroart books I have read. Still, though, it's an entertaining read with realistic political infighting and mixed motives for all the players. This in particular is Lescroart's strength as a writer: explaining why people are acting the way they do. SPOILER ALERT. And of course an added bonus is having a devout Mormon as the rogue cop and contract killer. Nice touch!
Not up to snuff for Lescroart.......2007-08-15
I'm a recent Lescroart fan, have now re-read all the Hardy-Glitsky series for the second time in order (the first time through was out of order, almost backwards) so I was looking foreward to this latest of his to come out in paperback (I seldom buy novels in hardback anymore).
The Hunt Club was a big disappointment. I liked the character, and it got off to a great start with the backstory on him, but the main plot and the killer ID are absolutely incredible, reminded me of Robert Ludlum at his worst. (Lescroart has a couple of regular Ludlumesque cliches that are beginning to annoy me: all women are 10s and wear silk, which flutters seductively when they breathe).
What I've liked about the Hardy series is that as with John Grisham, the main characters are well developed and believable, especially Hardy & Glitsky. So when you expect real people from an author, getting a comic book Ludlumesque potboiler of a plot like the Hunt Club was a real turnoff. My criteria for a good read is something I'd probably read again in a year or so, but I barely made it through this one once.
Initial reviews and the preview of Lescroat's latest, The Suspect don't sound much better, so I'll probably wait until that one shows up at my library or used book store or skip it altogether and hope Lescroart gets back on track soon.
Great start, but . . ........2007-07-19
This book showed great promise early on but quickly degenerated into a very boring story. After reading more than half of it, I gave up. The many storylines and lifeless characters were major factors, and I decided I didn't care how it turned out. In short, a waste of time.
A Tedious Read.......2007-06-26
There is only so much disbelief I can suspend, and this book exhausted my supply. After the character introduction and exposition of the crime, the author lost his way through the interminable and illogical ditherings of the so-called plot. I soon lost interest in the characters, their motivations, and finally just wanted it to be over.

In Manhattan Hunt Club John Saul plumbs the depths of the Manhattan underground--the network of subway tunnels and secret caverns and chambers where the homeless denizens of the city have created their own society. It's a world Jeff Converse, a young college student convicted of a crime he didn't commit, never knew existed until he is plunged into it after an "accident" that occurs while he is being transported to prison. He soon realizes that it's no accident, but the opening move in a deadly game being played by some of the city's most powerful men and women, a game in which he is the prey and they are the hunters. Jeff's only chance to make it to the surface and survive lies in allying himself with a homicidal maniac who's appointed himself the young man's protector, but whose designs on Jeff are almost as lethal as those of his enemies in the Manhattan Hunt Club.
Saul made his reputation in the horror genre, but he now focuses on psychological terrors rather than things that go bump in the night. His narrative gifts are displayed to great advantage in this heart-stopping thriller; the pacing is flawless and the central characters are very well developed. What keeps this from living up to its fullest potential is the inadequate motivation of the villains, who are largely one-dimensional cardboard cutouts. But that won't keep this otherwise topnotch thriller off the bestseller lists, where Saul (Nightshade, The Right Hand of Evil), like Stephen King, is a perennial contender for the number one spot. --Jane Adams

The acknowledged master of psychological suspense and heart-stopping terror, New York Times bestselling author John Saul now invites you to descend to chilling new depths of darkness -- and discover a secret, savage world that exists beneath our very feet.
The promising future of New York City college student Jeff Converse has suddenly been shattered by a nightmarish turn of events. Falsely convicted of a brutal crime, Jeff sees his life vanishing before his eyes. But someone has other plans for Jeff, in a far deadlier place than any penitentiary. He finds himself beneath the teeming streets of Manhattan, in a hidden landscape of twisting tunnels and forgotten subterranean chambers. Here, an invisible population of the homeless, the desperate, and the mad has carved out its own shadow society.
But they are not alone. The pitch-dark tunnels and abandoned subway stations are haunted by the unmistakable sounds of predators in search of game. Someone has made this forsaken civilization beneath the city a private killing ground... and the hunt is on.
Trapped in a treacherous underground maze, cut off at every turn by ragged gangs of sinister "gamekeepers," and stalked relentlessly by unseen hunters, Jeff faces overwhelming odds in the race to reach salvation and elude capture. With no weapon but his wits, and an unimaginable threat lurking around every dark corner, Jeff must somehow move heaven and earth to escape from a living hell.
The Manhattan Hunt Club is the most thrilling and suspenseful novel yet from the ingenious mind of John Saul.
"Heart-of-darkness storyteller Saul weaves a creepy tale of murder, corruption, and evil... It's a hot tome for summer in the city."
PEOPLE
"Long after you've finished this suspenseful cliffhanger of a book, the underground world that Saul creates will linger in the mind.... Saul takes us deep into that dark night of the soul and the subways in his frighteningly realistic and scarifying tale."

Customer Reviews:
Awesome! Suspensful! Shocking! Gross!!!.......2007-10-07
This is the most amazing book I ever read. It's actually the first one of John Saul's that I did read. I read it back in August of 2003 and still use it as a measure for all-time great books. I couldn't put it down! When I did (because I do work and sleep), it was still on my mind. It amazes me how John could come up with such an unusual story line that kept my interest all through even the creepy, grossest parts. It was so suspensful and intriguing. It deals with our justice system, the homeless, and was thought provoking as well which makes this is one of the best creepiest books I've read. If you like suspense and can stand some grossness, this is a must read!
A good read.......2007-02-10
We've all heard of how slaves were hunted for sport in days gone by.
Mr. Saul has cleverly transposed the `Game' to modern times with the Hunt taking place in the endless tunnels below Manhattan.
The hunters are the powerbrokers who choose the victims--those, who in the opinion of the Hunt Club, need to be eliminated for the good of the public.
The hunted are criminals who have got off lightly for their crimes.
Unfortunately, Jeff, wrongly accused of assault and attempted rape, is one of the chosen.
He finds an unexpected ally in one of the residents of the tunnels and together they take on the hunters.
The finale is a bit of a stretch, but the action is fast and realistic and keeps one turning the pages.
Corky Suspense.......2006-11-24
This was an interesting premise and kept my attention throughout the book. Jeff and Jagger were well developed but the other characters lacked substance. I found the whole homeless angle intriguing giving us a glimpse on how "the other half live." I felt however that the story per se was drawn out more then it needed and that in the end too many bad breaks and co-incidences happened to the hunters to be believable. Saul may have wanted a tidy ending but sacrificed a lot of creditability to do so. Perhaps if Jeff's father had died in some way it may have given the story a more realistic feel. After all, we are supposed to believe that the hunters have been doing this for a while now and thus their seasoned skills should have come through. The character of Eve Harris in my opinion was a mess. In the beginning she comes across as cunning and compassionate only to become a bumbling idiot in the end. Couldn't Saul done a little more with her? Maybe if she had been the one to kill Jeff's father then had her accident or something to that effect. Heather was nothing more then Jeff's main squeeze and never progressed from that stage. One could also argue there was a tad to much homophobia laced among some of the characters especially when it came to Jagger. I'm not saying gay guys can't be killers but setting up Jagger next to Jeff the homophobia comes right through. And what about the homeless? Well, in the end Saul remained neutral on the topic; a mere tool to use for a story. All the homeless characters were either alcoholics or bums say for Jinks. All this does is simply re-enforce the old stereo types. It would have been more compelling to have a sub-plot where a person is slowly becoming homeless and gets entangled with the whole underground society. In the end, the book does entertain and there are more then a few suspenseful moments although at times the suspense seems forced. Again the biggest disappointment is the ending and the dummying down of characters to tidy things up. The unabridged recording of this book contains seven cassettes and the narrator does an okay job although his Eve Harris is atrocious. I rate it a c+ and recommend it for a beach read but be prepared to totally suspend disbelief to the fullest.
Don't bother hunting for this novel.......2006-07-18
After reading this novel, I have now officially become a "non-fan" of John Saul. I discovered him when I became enthralled with "Creature" several years ago. Then I read "Black Creek Crossing" and figured that was just a misfire. Now after reading "Manhattan Hunt Club(MHC)," I'm sure it will be a long time before I give Mr. Saul another try.
I am always willing to stretch my imagination so I can become absorbed in a horror or suspense novel. It is easier to do if you have characters you care about and a storyline that, in spite of sounding implausible, moves quickly with surprises along the way. I think that is the problem with "MHC." For me, it delivers neither.
The story begins with a young man being found guilty of a murder and sentenced to a short time in jail. As he is being transported away, he is kidnapped, his death faked, and he finds himself below the subway tunnels of New York among the homeless. Little does he know it but he is now the prey in a twisted hunt. **Spoiler Alert: If you have seen the 1983 Michael Douglas movie "The Star Chamber," the plot is exactly the same.**
I guess the idea that there really may be an actual community of people living below the NYC streets is supposed to add a measure of credibility to the plot. Sorry, I just did not buy into the story and I did not "get into" the characters(And by the way, I think I am beginning to get tired of the plot device in recent stories and films that have the character in distress find a cell phone only to have the battery run out on them. I think it has already become a cliche'). My suggestion is pass on "MHC" unless you think John Saul can do no wrong.
Saul remains a disapointing author.......2006-07-01
This is the fourth novel I've now read from Saul and I think I'm about ready to throw in the towel. With the exception of the Homing, which was actually pretty good until the end, I've found Saul's works to be one boring mass of predicable, unrealistic, unrealized plots that may have once had potential. He prose feels like it's written for television, devoid of all but the most scant details and his dialogue is at times painful to read. The Manhattan Hunt Club is yet another in the long line of knock off's from the story "the most dangerous game," and this one falls shorter than most.
If you've seen the film "the Cell" you may get the idea. It looked decent in the previews, but sitting in the theatre I continually saw people looking around, completely bored with the wholly unremarkable presentation. The only reason I finished this book at all is because it goes so fast I figured "what the hell."
It's only been a few months and already I'm having trouble remembering any of the story, so what does that tell you.
Anyway, save your money. Track down an anthology that has the most dangerous game, read "Reliquary" by Preston and Child, (which also deals with the subway homeless in new York,) or hell, rent Van Dam's movie hard target, it's pretty much the same thing and better, which is kind of sad.

Customer Reviews:
Not His Best by a Long Shot.......2007-10-03
I like some of John Saul's work, but I thought THE MANHATTAN HUNT CLUB was a pretty mediocre effort.
The concept of this novel (people living in the tunnels underneath the New York Subway) is potentially interesting, but Saul invests little effort in creating believable characters or a realistic plot. In particular, I found the identity of the villains to be ridiculous. The overall silliness of this book made it hard for me to enjoy.
In short, THE MANHATTAN HUNT CLUB is pretty lackluster. My advice is to try some of Saul's better known work, such as SUFFER THE CHILDREN or THE GOD PROJECT. Those novels are more exciting, and have much stronger plots and characters.
On the edge of your seat thriller.......2007-09-03
This book was absolutely unreal.. I read few books cover to cover without putting them down at least once - but this book I could not put down. Great book by Saul, I was totally into the book from the beginning. Great novel!
Enjoyable,intense read.......2007-06-27
This is one of Sauls best.Of coarse he is one of my favorite writers. This starts of with and bang and kept me turning the pages to the very end.Great characters as well
not best.......2007-01-31
I bought this book with more expectations to enjoy another triller of John Saul, but i was a bit... very... smth between very and a bit disappointed.
This book is about guy is catacombs and that is followed by men who like to shoot people for fun. The story is a bit boring and predictable. And scenario is too easy to follow.
If i would not know who is author i would never guess that it's Saul. Well, there is of cause some interesting moment in book, that tense you a bit and not let you to fall asleep. But anyway it's not one of that books that you can read on one breath.
A Creepy Read!.......2006-06-16
Saul's suspenseful thriller The Manhattan Hunt Club starts off with a race to the death and ends with a race for survival. This book will leave you completely and utterly breathless and is one I would never read on the subways of New York.
Jeff Converse is sent to prison--for a crime he didn't commit. But instead of the confines and safety of concrete prison walls, he is given his freedom. If one can call it that. Jeff has become the prey in a deadly game, hunted by people with wealth, power and a sadistic lust for control. And what better control can one have than that over another human being's fate? `Should he live or die?'
Saul paints a terrifyingly hellish canvas of winding subway tunnels and a believable secret subterranean city--the land of the lost, the forgotten, the homeless and the insane. This novel is a pavement-pounding masterpiece of terror.
John Saul is a master of horror. I started as a teen, reading Suffer the Children, and have read almost every one of his books, but this one stayed with me far after the last page was turned. Along with Stephen King and Dean Koontz, Saul has been responsible for some of my sleepless nights and most terrifying dreams. And I can't wait for their next books! :)

I love Little Bill.......2000-03-26
My son is 5 and he relates to Little Bill very well.. All of the stories are easy to read and understand for him. I would recommend this book and all other Little Bill books to parents who read with their children on a regular basis. The language and concepts are simple yet interesting with very open ended solutions that can be applied anywhere and my son grasps the concepts quite well. We also watch the t.v show which is a bit different from the book, but like them both the same.
The best of Bill's books.......1998-10-20
Well this is the best of Bill Cosby's books. It still falls way short though. Children learning to read need better than this. It stops and starts. The pictures are great - I can't praise Miss Honeywood enough - yet the story disappoints. Best of Bill but my oh my this is pushing it Oprah!
ACTIONLESS.......1998-08-24
AS A PARENT, THE REFERENCES MADE BY EACH CHARACTER'S HOBBIES LACKED TODAY'S RELEVANCE/COULD NOT KEEP MY CHILD'S INTEREST. ALTHOUGH BILL COSBY OFTEN TRIES TO ENLIGHTEN TODAY'S YOUTH WITH HIS PERSONAL CRUSADE WITH BLACK ARTIST'S AND ATHELETE'S, HE NEEDS TO REMEMBER HIS AGE GROUP AND DECADES IN WHICH HE IS WRITING.
Pretty good.......1998-02-03
The Little Bill series is great. This one was a bit abstract for my 4 year old, I don't think he understood the concept of Little Bill making up his own story and being proud of it.

Book Description
For the first time in the Boone and Crockett Club’s long publishing history, they have made available a collection of stories about some of the finest big game trophies taken over the last century. All of the stories were handpicked for the special way in which each hunter captured the essence of their hunting experiences, including their tenacity, their ethics, and their respect for the game hunted.
You will feel the emotion, dedication, and excitement as you enjoy the stories of those men and women who have taken these outstanding trophies. One hunter pursued a buck over several seasons until he finally tagged what would become a new World’s Record. You will read the story of a bowhunter and of the meticulous preparation and tactics that resulted in his taking of an outstanding bull elk, and most importantly, you will see that each of these hunters embraced the concept of fair chase, and for that they should be applauded.

Evil Incarnate.......2007-06-04
I am amazed that there are not more reviews of this book, especially given the fact that this case was so highly publicized. There was also a t.v. movie of the same name and it has been documented that Lyle and Eric Menendez were "inspired" by the movie to commit the horrific murders of their parents.
This is the true story of Joe Hunt, a brilliant psychopath who, several years after graduating from the exclusive Harvard School in Los Angeles, formed a club he named the BBC. This club was made up of other young men from affluent families who wanted to make big money fast. The club was to be part investment and part social. The boys would live together, pool their resources and live by Joe's creed of "Paradox Philisophy", which was simply Joe's way of exercising control and manipulation over the other members.
Joe's investments soon go awry and he ends up loosing the money that other people have trusted him to invest for them. When things get out of control, Joe plots murder and kidnapping and that is when the book really takes off. I could not put it down!
This is an excellent true crime story which focuses on Joe Hunt's ruthless anti-social personality. It is an excellent portrait of an evil sociopath.
True crime fans will love this book! I highly recommend it.
Halley's Comet Revisited.......2000-04-25
Is it just me? I read this book and it's about a rich aristocratic family launching a probe at Halley's Comet in order to set a precedent in laws of ownership of objects in space (so they can then claim the planets without ever visiting them). Nothing in there about making money on the stock exchange or patricide. I know it sounds like I'm knocking the previous reviews but hey guys, that's not the same book!
incredible story...and it's true!! keeps you reading........1999-08-13
i have read this book 2x. when i saw the movie i had to get the book, which came out after the movie. what spoiled rich kids will do for money! what joe hunt will do for power and control. it was quite a story... and it was told well! a page turner.
Young men on the fast track to making big bucks by murder........1999-03-03
I enjoyed this book and the television movie. These young men, led by Joe Hunt, wanted to live the good life. They wanted to make huge sums of money, drive flashy, fast cars, go out with debutantes and girls of high society and live the good life. They thought they could accomplish this by becoming whiz kid stock market investors. This plan went did not succeed. Instead of making money for themselves and their clients, they lost it. All of it. As a result they resorted to murder. They killed the father of one of their kiddie group and another person who had tricked them by making them think they had successfully invested a large sum of money, only to find out it was a phony investment scheme on paper. The murder of this man was to cover the extortion of a million plus dollars from him and payback for tricking them.

Book Description
The Saddle Club is in for some real excitement when Stevie's boyfriend, Phil, invites them, along with a few other kids from their Pony Club, to participate in a genuine fox hunt. Stevie, Lisa, and Carole can't wait for the event to begin -- especially when they find out that no harm will come to the fox! But first, to give everyone a chance to learn the ropes, there's a mock hunt at Pine Hollow Stables. As the most devious of the bunch, Stevie is chosen to play the fox. Yet on the day of the hunt, she'll discover she isn't the only one who's devious... when her prank-playing brothers get involved in the chase!
