Book Description
Part memoir, part monologue, with a dash of startling honesty, There’s Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say features biographies of legendary historical figures from which Paula Poundstone can’t help digressing to tell her own story. Mining gold from the lives of Abraham Lincoln, Helen Keller, Joan of Arc, and Beethoven, among others, the eccentric and utterly inimitable mind of Paula Poundstone dissects, observes, and comments on the successes and failures of her own life with surprising candor and spot-on comedic timing in this unique laugh-out-loud book.
If you like Paula Poundstone’s ironic and blindingly intelligent humor, you’ll love this wryly observant, funny, and touching book.
Paula Poundstone on . . .
The sources of her self-esteem: “A couple of years ago I was reunited with a guy I knew in the fifth grade. He said, “All the other fifth-grade guys liked the pretty girls, but I liked you.” It’s hard to know if a guy is sincere when he lays it on that thick.
The battle between fatigue and informed citizenship: I play a videotape of The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer every night, but sometimes I only get as far as the theme song (da da-da-da da-ah) before I fall asleep. Sometimes as soon as Margaret Warner says whether or not Jim Lehrer is on vacation I drift right off. Somehow just knowing he’s well comforts me.
The occult: I need to know exactly what day I’m gonna die so that I don’t bother putting away leftovers the night before.
TV’s misplaced priorities: Someday in the midst of the State of the Union address they’ll break in with, “We interrupt this program to bring you a little clip from Bewitched.”
Travel: In London I went to the queen’s house. I went as a tourist—she didn’t invite me so she could pick my brain: “What do you think of my face on the pound? Too serious?”
Air-conditioning in Florida: If it were as cold outside in the winter as they make it inside in the summer, they’d put the heat on. It makes no sense.
The scandal: The judge said I was the best probationer he ever had. Talk about proud.
With a foreword by Mary Tyler Moore

There's nothing in this book that I meant to say by Paula Poundstone.......2007-08-06
This is a funny book... I listened to it in my car on five CDs. Paula has been through a lot and yet she has not lost her sense of humor. If you ever get the chance to go see her live, don't miss it. She is one of the quickest and the best at adLib that I have ever seen.
Humor, History and Humility.......2007-07-29
What do Joan of Arc, Abraham Lincoln, Helen Keller, Beethoven, Charles Dickens,The Wright Brothers and Sitting Bull all have in common? Isn't it obvious? Paula Poundstone of course.
Ms. Poundstone makes both humorous and serious parallels with these historical figures as she goes back and forth between her life and theirs. We not only learn about her own history, we learn about her wry views on life, recovery from her addiction and her number one priority-her three children. As an added bonus we may even be motivated to read more about the people whose names are the titles of the seven chapters.
I especially appreciated her frank discussion of her alcoholism in terms of acceptance, taking responsibility as well as making amends to those whose lives were most affected, her children.
Well done Paula!
A pleasant, rambling read.......2007-07-26
This book feels a lot like listening to a Paula Poundstone comedy routine. She starts off on one topic and you never know where you will end up. I was pleasantly surprised by how personal she was willing to get when talking about her recent substance problems. She did so with much grace and self-deprecating humor. I just love her wit and found myself laughing out loud on several occasions.
There's Nothing in This Book That I Meant to Say.......2007-06-08
Great book. She writes with raw honesty and gentle humour. While reading the book, you feel like you're having a great heart to heart talk, with a good friend.
Nayslove.......2007-05-12
If you are a fan of Paula's, you will LOVE this book! If you aren't and are looking for a good read, you will enjoy the history lesson and fall in love with her. I laughed so hard I had tears rolling. It is both poignant and hysterically funny. She is brilliant as a comic, and now as an author.

Awesome Book.......2006-06-11
I read this book for a book report in 5th grade. I enjoyed as much as I enjoyed Ginger Pye. It was very entertaining. I think this book is mainly for grades 3-7 because its big and has some big words too. Loved this book overall
The Cat Has It!.......2006-02-20
Pinky Pye is yet another well written book by Elenor Estes. As appealing as both the Moffats series and the infamous Ginger Pye. This title is an excellent choice for both the traditional and creative book report formats for readers of 4th through 6th grades. If you love animals, and a solid story line of sibling relationship, this book is for you! Besides, where else could you read about a typewriting cat!
Pinky Pye.......2005-11-16
Pinky Pye is a charming book about a little black cat. Pinky Pye is about the Pye family and they go to Fire Island. Mr. Pye goes to look for birds and brings the family. At there cottage they find a cat in a crabnet, there was a sign on her that said "ABANDID". It said her name was Pinky too. The Pyes decided to keep her. One day she started type writing. They started calling her the type writing cat. They found an owl in the eaves and gave it to Mr. Bish, his owner. You should read this book to find out the ending. I think this is a book for all ages.
A smart cat named Pink Pye.......2003-03-17
Pinky Pye is a cute, funny ,exciting, and questioning kind of book.My favorite part is when the Pyes find Pinky. Then find out that Pinky can type on Mr.Pyes type writer.I really liked
this book.Kathryn Arnold...>
Pinky Pye.......2003-03-11
This story is about the Pyes (Rachael, her brother Jerry, Mama, Papa, Gracie, Uncle Benny, and Ginger) who go on vacation so Papa ,a famous ornithologist, can figure out what a puffin is doing there. His bad memory gets him in a lot of trouble very early on in the book. Little did he know he wouldn't get much work done due to an abandoned kitten left on their cabin's door step. Pinkey Pye they called her, who would do anything just so someone will say she's cute. Mama brought plenty of coats (even though it was 90 degrees outside) just in case they were walking along the beach and a snow storm arived and matches in case they got lost. Her motto is "Be Prepared." Uncle Benny is Mama's brother even though he is 5 years younger than Rachael and Jerry(Mama's children). He wonders how his crickets are vanishing one by one. He is on a never ending quest to stop sucking his thumb. Gracie is a grumpy old cat who feins boredom through out although she is very interested in a creature lurking in the shadows of the attic... Ginger is the clever dog, but feels a little left out when Pinky steps into the picture. Will her jelousy overcome her common sense? Filled with laughs. Some of the suspence in this book will keep you laughing and crying over their detailed antics. I recommend reading Ginger Pye before this one though. All in All a good book.

Charming Little Tail.......2007-04-09
This story is charming and whimsical. With rhyming verse, it tells the story of 15 cats washed ashore on an island and how they work together. Yes, the theme has been done but does not detract from the story. The rhyming makes it fun to read for parents, and easy for children to listen to. Even if your child isn't a cat lover, this story could make him one.
As with most children's books, it's the illustrations that draw me in and this book does not fall short. The pictures are rich, detailed and expressive and will make even a parent pause to examine them.
I checked this out from my local library and am now considering buying to add to our collection.
Great Read!.......2006-11-04
My 4 yr old grandson loves this book. The illustrations are great - lots of things to look for - and the story is really cute.
Fun text, beautiful illustrations........2006-07-13
The illustrations are fabulous. The rhyming text is entertaining and has enough interesting words to make it a higher level than a lot of rhyming books. It begins "On an island in the ocean near the land of Singapore, midst a storm of great proportion fifteen cats were washed ashore..." My daughter is fascinated with shipwrecks, pirates, stowaways, castaways etc so this story was right up her alley. It would also be great for cat lovers since there are so many different kinds of cats and the different kinds are well drawn and recognizable in the illustrations. My duaghter loves this book and we love reading it to her because of the drawings and the clever things in the text (e.g. the marmalade cat always uses jam related words).
I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 just because I found the story got a little weaker toward the end in the sense that the moral of the story -- we must work together to succeed -- is maybe a little too obvious.

Customer Reviews:
My 1st grade class liked it!.......2007-08-26
Comet is a cat living in a dog-run world (doesn't life suck there?) where he meets misfortune after misfortune. Fortunately, he is a cat and therefore has nine lives--he just happens to be loosing them at an alarming rate.
It's a sweet, quirky story that admittedly does not have much on plot. But the kids had fun predicting how each new situation would kill Comet. I have never seen macabre in a cuter way, and that's always a plus. Despite all the fun deaths, we are still left wondering if Comet will make it out alive and live happily ever after or lose all nine lives.
Much of the story is told in the illustrations, and I appreciated that as it got the kids thinking. And, as always, Jan Brett's illustrations are gorgeous.
If the kids are fighting over this book during free reading time, that's a good sign. And teacher enjoys a little macabre herself.
Great job.
Great Pictures, Okay Story.......2007-04-26
Very beautiful Nantucket influenced illustrations, but I am not compelled to own it compared to many other of Brett's books, due to the story, and I am a cat lover. The flow seemed choppy from page to page as the cat "dies" each one of eight of his nine lives in various ways.
Beautiful Illustrations and an Entertaining Storyline.......2006-03-27
As always, the drawings by Jan Brett are amazing. The detail shows just how deeply she researches all of her subjects before starting a project.
This story follows Comet, and adventure-seeking cat on Nantucket who manages to find trouble wherever he goes and quickly uses up his "nine lives" before he finds a wonderful home at the lighthouse.
For those who have trouble with the idea of Comet "dying" over and over again, try explaining to your children what the phrase "nine lives" means. Obviously no cat has nine lives, but anyone who has cats, as we do, knows that cats have lots of near misses. When we read this book we do not look at them as deaths, but mearly close calls.
A great story to follow along with the fantastic illustrations.
My First Jan Brett Book.......2005-12-12
This was my and my son's first Jan Brett book and it won't be our last! We bought it on vacation on Cape Cod, and even though the story was about Nantucket, we were thrilled with how well it evoked the various sides of beach town living. So different than all the other "beach books" out there. It doesn't hurt that my son is a cat freak, so of course we were very interested in all the ways that Comet the cat chose to explore the sea town. I paused a bit before buying this book, worried about having to explain "death" to my son in the context of Comet's having nine lives, but I found that it didn't bother him or me, he was able to understand that the nine lives were meant humorously.
The illustrations are nicely complex, and they still provide much to look at even though my son has already committed the text to memory.
We'll be trying Jan Brett's Christmas books next. (Update -- The Christmas books are nowhere near as much fun as Comet. They seem like they come from a different author entirely).
Death is not charming.......2005-10-13
I agree with the reviewer who found this macabre. Normally I like Jan Brett's work a lot, but I don't think that death should be portrayed as cute and funny, nor do I think that young children should be given the impression that death is a temporary state.

Customer Reviews:
Fun to read...........2003-06-14
I bought the book for my seven year old neice Lily while visiting Nantucket Island last summer. She was very excited by the pictures and easy to follow story. The rhymes were fun for her to read. Usually I read to her, but this book was different. She picks it up before bedtime while at sleep-overs. Usually I have to push story time. She looks forward to reading this book because it is a realistic story of a cats travels during the day.
especially fun for Nantucket fans and cat lovers.......2000-11-02
A cute little rhyming story about a cat's adventures as he roams around his home-island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. Text is easy to read and rhythmic because every 2 lines rhyme with each other. The words flow easily, so I disagree with some of the other reviews. Charming painted illustrations with muted jewel tones are fun to look at. The illustrations go across two pages and there is a border on the top and bottom of every page that contains little drawings relevant to the page's content. An example is that the page where the cat jumps on the fishing boat, the border has many different types of boats, from canoes to lobster boats. The page where the grey-haired woman is baking has a border of baking essentials such as butter, flour, eggs, and a measuring cup. The text reads very quickly but there is so much detail in the illustrations that much time can be spent talking about what is on the page and/or making up your own more detailed story to more closely match the illustrations. As our family travels to different places I try to purchase a children's book by a local author that is set in that location. Cat lovers and those who adore Nantucket will especially be attracted to this book.
Nat Nat the Nantucket Cat.......2000-07-26
I've been reading this book to my daughter Kaileigh who is now 2 for over year now, and it is without a DOUBT, HER FAVORITE BOOK....the cat, Mrs. Sprat, and Captain Pat...she knows them all and loves to hear the story over and over. Even the pictures make it fun to talk about what's in the story...boats, fish, clock, flowers...all have helped add to her ability to recognize objects and "tell her own story". WE LOVE Nat Nat!
Charmingly illustrated..........1999-12-08
The illustrations in this book make it a worthwhile purchase. The borders surrounding the pictures make for interesting conversation aside from the story. The illustrations do a nice job of capturing Nantucket's charm. Nat's story, while cute, is sometimes awkward in terms of rhyme. When we bought this book, while vacationing on Nantucket, for our then 2 1/2 yo, she was enchanted with it. She still enjoys the story and now acts it out.
Colorful Illustrations with basic rhyming.......1999-06-29
The book has many great illustrations though not completely accurate of Nantucket, are still enjoyable to look at. The book is very easy to read to young children, although the rhyming doesn't flow, is has a quaint story line.
Book Description
What a great read-aloud, sing-aloud, shout-aloud book this is, with its fun-to-imitate animal sounds and rhythmic rhyme. Bright yellow chicks, golden bees, and striped kitty-cats play in the warm sunshine, clucking and buzzing and skitty-scatting. Then they rest, snoozy-woozy. But what is this? The pitter-patter of raindrops. Now the crash, bang, wallop of a storm—how will they get dry? Soon the sun and sweet breezes come out again. Wonderfully textured art (you can practically feel the cats’ fur and the chicks’ softness), as well as a sleepytime ending, will make this a favorite to read again and again.
Customer Reviews:
Chicky - this book is awesome!.......2007-09-14
Normally I am very tired of hearing authors make up new words and using little sound bites, but not with Chicky Chicky Chook Chook. We read this with a classroom of three-year-olds and they were giggling away. My son loved it at least 7 times! I had to keep reading it just to hear him attempting the new sounds he heard. The talent of Cathy MacLennan goes even further with illustrations briming with imagination and texture!
Beautifully illustrated & beautifully written.......2007-06-26
I bought this book for my nephew who is 18 months old. He absolutely LOVES it. The manner the author/illustrator uses is VERY good. Upon the first reading, my nephew thought the chicks were actually fuzzy. The sounds that make up the text are mesmerizing. The story features bees, chicks, and cats. Children who are learning animals will be captivated. Many times when playing, we'll hear him, "Chicky, chicky, chook chook," or "Snuggle, snuggle, sleepy shine."
I was also taken with the methods of illustration. The author was born in Zimbabwe and now lives in the UK. Influences of Africa are apparent in the vivid and sweet illustrations.
This book is very enjoyable for toddlers and adults alike!

Great read!.......2005-01-25
I first read this book as an jr high schooler. I was able to find it used later and recently read it again. It is a wonderful story of a young boy coming of age. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes books like Huck Finn, Where the Red Fern Grows, or anything written by Gary Paulsen.

A family favorite.......2002-12-30
We read this book after taking a vacation at the beach this summer and the kids love it. The illustrations are great, and it's even informative without being boring. Put this one on your bookshelf at home!
Book Description
Brutus, a Rottweiler who had suffered a lesion in his vertebrae, was barely able to move when he was brought to Angel's Gate hospice and rehabilitation center. Now, after months of hydro- and physical therapy, he enjoys daily walks. Thanks to Susan Marino, who runs the center in her Long Island home, more than 150 animals, from dogs and cats to horses and birds, are given the kind of hospice care usually reserved for people. Some recover from their life-threatening injuries or illnesses, while others are given refuge through their final days.
Getting Lucky tells the story of Lucky-a dog who's sent to Angel's Gate to die but instead finds a whole new way of living-and 20 other animals at the hospice. But it's also the story of a woman with a mission. Marino, a former pediatric nurse, started Angel's Gate 12 years ago in the belief that even critically ill and abandoned animals deserved to die with dignity and respect, and her work has made her a genuine hero. She speaks to veterinary groups across the country about her groundbreaking approach to animal care. This important book is a testament to the difference one person can make. AUTHOR BIO: Susan Marino was an intensive-care pediatrics nurse for 30 years, working with terminally ill children. She founded the nonprofit Angel's Gate hospice 12 years ago in her home on Long Island and continues to run the center with her husband. This is her first book. Denise Flaim is the author of The Holistic Dog Book and a staff writer and pet columnist for Newsday. She is the owner of champion Rhodesian ridgebacks.

Great read.......2007-01-04
Once you open the book, you can't put it down. My husband picked it up to
read the first couple of pages and did not put it down till he was done.
I did the same. Since I did some volunteer work at Angel's Gate during the summer, I was really able to connect with some of the animals and was able to see how much they are loved and cared for.
Great heart breaking book!.......2006-04-27
This book is one that has to be read just to see what people go through when they lose a pet. I never thought I would be the one that was so attached to a pet. But I did for 13 years. Then when it was time. I made sure everything was is place for a pet funeral and made a great headstone for him. He was a loyal friend and I miss him dearly. I know that there are Angels Gates in heaven.
Getting Lucky is a 5 star read!.......2006-04-01
Getting Lucky is for all of us who share our hearts and lives with our animals. This book will make you laugh and cry, sometimes both at once. Beautifully written, with humor, love and sadness that just pulls at your heart. You won't be able to put it down. Angel's Gate is truly a place where "Angels" go to be loved and let go. I dedicate this review to my own angel, Jakob M. who passed on only 1 year ago. I'm grateful that places like Angel's Gate exist and that there are people out there who know just how special these creatures are.
Love, Love, Love IT!.......2006-03-24
This book is awesome! I recently lost my beloved Black Lab, Molson, who was 11 years old. I felt like I was there with all the pets in this book. I wish I lived near Angel's Gate... I would be there to volunteer in a minute! How wonderful these people are to take on such a heartfelt approach to helping these precious animals. I found myself smiling from ear to ear throughout the whole story! A must for all animal lovers to read!
LOVE IT!!.......2006-03-14
Even if you dont have a pet but like animals this is a must read...
I dont have a pet now but have had them growing up as a child. Absolutely Love this book and the touching stories...I laughed and cried and sometimes at the same time... The only bad thing about this book, is that I finished it. I wanted it to go on and on and to read more of the wonder of these wonderful animals...I feel that animals are a gift we can learn so much from them. I agree with Susan Marino the Author. Our pets have souls. They show it daily. I need for there to be a second book and on and on. The love you feel when you read about these animals (pets) is so tangible. Its not so sad as you would think but I came away reading it with feeling uplifted and it truly touched my spirit...I almost didnt buy this book I thought it was about just one dog but its soooooo much more then that and its woven richly with other pets this family and volunteer"s have helped see to there end days. What an honor to read this gem of a book. Thank you Sincerely yours Diane
