Book Description

In this rich, vibrant tale, Diana Gabaldon continues the story of Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser that began with the now-classic novel Outlander and continued in Dragonfly in Amber. Sweeping us from the battlefields of eighteenth-century Scotland to the exotic West Indies, Diana Gabaldon weaves magic once again in an exhilarating and utterly unforgettable novel....

Their love affair happened long ago by whatever measurement Claire Randall took. Two decades before, she had traveled back in time and into the arms of a gallant eighteenth-century Scot named Jamie Fraser. Then she returned to her own century to bear his child, believing him dead in the tragic battle of Culloden. Yet his memory has never lessened its hold on her ... and her body still cries out for him in her dreams.

When she discovers that Jamie may have survived, Claire must choose her destiny. And as time and space come full circle, she must find the courage to face what awaits her ... the deadly intrigues raging in a divided Scotland ... and the daring voyage into the dark unknown that lies beyond the standing stones.

2 out of 5 stars Dinna Trouble Yourself.......2007-10-01

So, OK... I admit that I liked Outlander and Dragonfly... but Voyager was just ludicrous. But after slogging my way through Voyager, I feel complete with the series. I realize that this book is supposed to be over-the-top action and people admire it because the lovers aren't in their 20's. But Gabaldon over-uses phrases and all judgements about people are based on what their eyebrows are doing. The setting of the various boats they are in are claustrophobic and Claire is taken hostage so many times in the three books I have read, you would think that she would be used to it. If you want non-stop action, then go for it. But this is definitely a book for plot junkies.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent continuation of a fabulous series.......2007-09-23

Although this was not my favorite of the first three Outlander books, that's kind of like me saying I prefer Lindt chocolate over Godiva chocolate -- they're all yummy!

"Voyager" was a little hard for me to wrap my mind around at first, as it took me a while to get used to a 20-years-older Jamie, but that hurdle was quickly passed as I got caught up in the book with it's interesting twists and turns.

This series is one of my all-time favorites!

5 out of 5 stars As usual another great book.......2007-09-04

The Voyager was as thrilling as the others, I love the stories and mishap that Jamie and Claire get into. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series..

5 out of 5 stars This is a must read series.......2007-08-23

Our entire family has enjoyed the entire Gabaldon Outlander series. We savor each book knowing it has to come to an end, waiting for the next, and not looking forward to the series conclusion (if there is one). It's a 2-year commitment to read the entire series, but what a story!!! And a great way to learn of Scotland and the colonies' early history.

5 out of 5 stars Book #3 in this series.......2007-08-21

This book picks up right were book #2 leaves off.

This continues Jamie and Claire's lives even though they were born 400 years apart!

The love they had for each other thru the series was awesome. These two had a love that 400 years could not stop.

I don't want to say too much about this and spoil it, but Claire learns that Jamie did NOT die in the Battle of Culloden and she prepares to return to that time period--20 years later, of course.

This entire series had me reading Scottish history as fast as I could pick it up.

Full of action, murder, friendship, love and lots of adventure.

They pick the darnest places to sleep for the night. It was amazing what they could do with the kilt back then. Talk about multi purpose!

The next book (#4), "Drums of Autumn," is okay, but the series started to taper off for me on that one. But that's another review...

2 out of 5 stars interesting, but I prefer other decks.......2006-10-25

so you have motherpeace and daughters of the moon for the ladies, I guess that this deck is sort of done for the gentlemen who drum in circles in the woods under the moon. the deck is very white and very male. there are pictures of people of other cultures, but they are there to be exotic and "other." the female energey here isn't a quiet, inner energy but rather one that exists to support the male.

many sacred sculptures and artworks from other cultures are incorporated into some of the cards, but in a way that doesn't seem to reveal a lot of knowledge about the artwork included. why a god of industry on a card traditionally about inner nurturing? I do not get the feeling that the levels of meaning here are as deep as those in say, crowley's thoth tarot, which I love love love. and yes, as someone else stated, the images here do feel dated. I just wish that they felt deeeeeper! (crystals and flowers chosen for the swords and cups don't seem to have any reason for being there other than that they are crystals and flowers...why not blooms of mourning for a card on letting go, or perenials for cards about resiliance, for example.) this deck left me wanting more for the people who made it.

one thing they did give was a very heavy new-age push to sign up for their card course and to send more money and blah blah blah.

the deck I got also had many of the cards stuck together because of the coating. I had to peel each one apart and they don't shuffle so well.

fun to look at, but I don't use it as much as thoth, enchanted or sacred rose.

5 out of 5 stars voyager tarot deck.......2006-08-26

I call myself a visionary because of this deck.
Never have I come across something that encompasses such a montage of images that peak out at all the appropriate times.
On a side note, I personally do not believe in "reading the book" or "reading the tarot formations"neither the inserts included.
I feel the card is allowing me to part the bushes and peer into whatever soul I am working with at the time.
They strike me as a form of 52 pickup with all the images hanging in the air.
My job is to pick each image one by one and unite them into an appropriate overview for the client.
This deck has changed me , altered my views of beauty and life as we know it.
It challenges the limitations of the 4 sides to a card and whisper their version of maddness into my awaiting ears and eyes.
I have had a blast with these cards, something I view as a special companion , my sidekick.
When you use them do not get overwhelmed by their size and contents, allow yourself a minute to adjust to the images that jump forward and weave a tale for you.
My only other piece of advise to a newbee, dont study the images , don't stare at the cards endlessly,,,,each read is a moment , allow them to dictate to you what song will be sung.
Ill say it again, these cards have been such a link to the beyond for me.
I am grateful we have found each other.
enjoy them .

5 out of 5 stars tarot for the multidimensional traveler.......2006-01-29

This a great tool for self reflection. The cards are beautiful and deeply thought out, combining imagery from many spiritual paths in a synthesis that feels natural and epansive. I've had a deck for more than ten years and it continues to surprise and inspire me. I highly recommend this deck and the guide that it comes with.

3 out of 5 stars Definitive New Age Tarot.......2005-07-30

This was one of the first Tarot decks I purchased in 1987. At the time it was cutting edge with my taste. Very contempory in its presentation. I was simultaneously studying the Crowley-Thoth deck that Mr. Wanless wrote a great workbook for. His Voyager Tarot brought the Tarot into the modern age for myself and many others. This was the deck I began using to read for others.

The card were large and beautifully constructed of universal photography that seemed so profound then. This was just as the digital age was being born. There were no fancy programs to work with. It was truely a major feat at the time. Compliments were given to the cards alone, not my skills reading them! Alas, this was my college years. I was an art student. I had very little money and took them to a party. They were stolen in 1989!

For myself,I Hermetically sealed the deck as well as my current study of the Tarot. I kept reading with the Thoth Deck. After college, many years later I purchased another Photo-montage deck-The Cosmic Tribe Tarot. It was superior indeed! I decided to purchase another copy of the Voyager in 1999.

Time can date our perception of what we consider beautiful or meaningful. That was the case with this particular Tarot. It had lost much of the mystical charm of just 10 years ago. The images are somewhat nostalgic and I do not use it for any professional work. Mr Wanless should try another deck with modern technology being what it is. There are many great photo decks out there. I feel this one is just a little dated in its style.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular!.......2003-08-27

Beautiful, modern, artistic, creative interpretation of the tarot. The artwork is bright, vivid and magnificent. lots of symbolism incorporated into each card. I love the cultural diveristy reflected in these cards. The Family cards, with realistic representations of the Court Cards (ex. man or woman instead of king and queen) is such a wonderful idea. I really connect to these cards. Very highly recommend for anyone interested in Tarot from beginner to professional reader.

“A fresh presentation of the gardening cycle with a joyful conclusion, and the added attraction of an easy and tasty recipe for vegetable soup on the flyleaf.”--School Library Journal

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good book on gardening life cycle.......2007-02-02

This small board book is simply and beautifully illustrated in bright flat colors. Usually the illustrations are very understandable and clear, but occasionally the color contrast between the object and the background is poor making the object disappear into the background. The main text is in large bold print and simple language; however, the labels for each object are in very small print, making them difficult for my older eyes to read. My 3 year old enjoys the book. Its a beautiful book and I would buy it again; however, I would check out some of the larger formats of the book first.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2006-03-06

As a teacher, I have always loved this book. The bold colors hold children's attention, and it fits well with lessons for younger children on what seeds/plants need to grow, the growing process and includes a recipe for making your own vegetable soup. For early childhood teachers,it can become an early science/social studies/math lesson and also a parent/child activity. A must have!

5 out of 5 stars Good lesson for little children.......2006-02-06

As well as being attractive and quite an easy read (my five year old managed it), it encourages children to be interested in vegetables-both growing and eating them. Great book.

4 out of 5 stars Good Book for Small Children - a review of Growing Veg. Soup.......2005-12-13

This book has gotten good reviews by others but I am a little less enthusiastic about it.

Certainly I love the concept of teaching about gardening and how food makes it's way from the soil to our plates; but the artwork, I think, gets in the way of making this a superior 5-Star text.

For example, the abstract art [bold and attractive] is okay for demonstrating seeds sitting in the soil, but it is not very good for actually showing what a squash blossom looks like. For all you can tell, it's a open tulip on a vine. Likewise the corn is shown as being orange instead of yellow.

Four Stars. This book gives children an idea of how food goes from the ground to the bowl, but if you are looking for a book that will give your young child an accurate picture of what growing veggies look like, you'll have to keep searching.

5 out of 5 stars For Inquiring Minds.......2000-04-25

Children of all ages will enjoy this book, especially if they love to grow plants. Growing Vegetable Soup is also woderfully illustrated. I used this book in a Literacy Bag in conjuction with a Peter Rabbit Garden created by my university. An activity that can be used with the book for young children would be a matching game--vegetable or tool picture to word.

4 out of 5 stars Great colloction of short stories for Star Trek Voyager fans..........2007-08-16

I enjoyed the stories in this volume some more than others, but overall I thought the entire book was worth adding to my collection and well worth reading. In fact, there are a couple stories that had some real depth to them. I hope to see more collection like this one in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Voyager Roads Not Taken.......2007-06-09

DISTANT SHORES is simply an excellent collection of Voyager stories that span the entire run of the series. The stories focus on previously unexplored plots, based on episodes or events referred to in episodes. And many of them would have made great shows: Kes and Neelix in "Closure", Chakotay and Tuvok in "Command Code", B'Elanna & Kes in "Winds of Change", Chakotay and Janeway in "Isabo's Shirt", as well as stories with former memebers of The Equinox, and the Borg. If there was any disappointment with the book, it is that I wanted more stories!
If you like Voyager, pick up this wonderful book that fills in the spaces between shows.

4 out of 5 stars Voyager Season 7.5.......2007-01-27

Voyager was exasperating. The crew never ran out of fuel, food, or shuttles, the characters never really changed, and there was never any sense of peril, that the characters might die or that Voyager might not make it home. But still, after seven years together I couldn't help feeling a little wistful after the last episode knowing I'd never see those characters again, except in reruns.

Which is why Star Trek Voyager: Distant Shores was such a pleasant companion for a couple of weeks, a collection of 12 short stories each of which reads like a typical television episode. The stories cover all seven seasons and with the exception of Tuvok, all the major characters are featured in at least one story.

The writers in this volume must be great fans themselves. They've succeeded in capturing the essence of the show and the characters, recreating in print what we saw each week on television. Their faithfulness, however, sometimes goes too far and as a result we get ridiculous plot contrivances, such the first season story in which Tuvok withholds the command codes from Chakotay even though the ship is under alien attack and Janeway incapacitated because, well, Tuvok's not really sure if he can trust the former Maquis. There's also the sentimental, ripped-from-a-Harelquin-romance episode in which Chakotay confesses his love to Janeway, and 38 pages of stuporous logs recorded by the doctor while stranded on the planet Tahal (which answers the question of how a being made of light could have a "son.").

The better stories in this collection equal and even outdo the better televised episodes. Harry Kim finally gets the girl, a very special person who teaches him the value of living in the present. At Janeway's suggestion, the crew puts together a talent show, full of wit and humor with a rather sorrowful and touching ending. And perhaps the best episode of all, the story of how Kes and B'Elanna learn to build a windmill and in the process learn something about themselves and each other.

You're sure to find something of interest in Distant Shores, a wonderful volume for anyone who has ever enjoyed Voyager. Even those of us who sometimes couldn't wait for it end.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for a short attention span.......2007-01-10

Distant Shores is the perfect collection of 'novelettes' by previously-published Star Trek novel authors. Focused around the Voyager cast and crew, with most episodes being placed after the 5th season, it is a mix of stories that (a) further explore the emotional psyche of characters whilst experiencing events already told in the series (e.g. there is a story of how Janeway's ex fiance processed her being 'lost in space' and moving on shortly prior to receiving confirmation that she was still safe and sound); and (b) introduce new storylines around the already established events. Both are enjoyable in their own way, if not a little saccharine-sweet sentimental - but that's just a matter of taste. This bag of mixed lollies certainly has enough variety of sweets to appeal to all tastes. A recommended read for all.

4 out of 5 stars New Appreciation.......2006-08-14

Made me realize how much I miss Star Trek! Voyager was not a favorate of mine, but I guess I was more attached to the charactors then I thought. Want to buy the series and live it again.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Classic Australian Childrens' Picturebook.......2007-08-30

This is a classic Australian picturebook which is becoming popular again as those of us from the generation who were kids when it was first published (1983) now are buying it ourselves and reading it to our children or nieces and nephews. Granted there's always the hey I remember this book when I was kid factor that drives up sales but unlike a lot of books which have this factor of when you get home and read them you remember that you never really liked that book back when you were kid because it is infact not that good, Possum Magic is remembered and was popular back in the 80's because it was a good book. Although some of the food (remedies for Hush's invisibility) inside are no longer uniquely Australian (which is a good thing), learnign about them along with the uniquely Australian wildlife inside this book would make an ideal gift or purchase for any Australian now living overseas to read to their kids and teach them a bit about their heritage. For anyone whose not Australian it is a great opportunity to learn something about Australian culture.

The basic tale of this book revolves around a little girl possum called Hush whose grandma (named Grandma Poss) who was an expert in bush magic turned Hush invisible to prevent her being eaten by snakes (now of course in reality snakes don't use sight like we do to find their prey but see the heat from the body like someone wearing night vision goggles does so being invisible wouldn't have actually helped Hush but anyway this is a fiction book and that's a discussion/lesson probably left for an age group older than this book's target market). Although Hush gets into a few dilemmas as the result of being invisible such as being sat on by a koala she still gets up to lots of fun like riding down the back of kangaroos like a slippery dip. Hush however wants to know what she looks like so asks Grandma Poss to make her visible again which Grandma Poss has of course forgotten, although she remembers it has something to do with human food. This is the tale of finding the cure and travelling across (with a bit of poetic licence by riding a bike and in a floating umbrella the vast distances of) Australia to find it.

Other good children's books about invisibility if that's what you were after include My Best Friend Is Invisible (Goosebumps) by R. L. Stine, You Are Invisible: CYOA #48 by Susan Saunders, The Invisible Day by Marthe Jocelyn, Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich by Adam Rex, you can even get an illustrated version of H.G. Wells 1897 classic The Invisible Man (Great Illustrated Classics).

5 out of 5 stars from Grandma Poss.......2007-08-14

Delightful book with illustrations that takes kids 3-6 on an imaginative trip to Australia. I could identify with the main character, "Grandma Poss."

5 out of 5 stars Culinary Tour of Australia.......2007-08-05

A wonderful picture book with a delightful story line and engaging illustrations, Mem Fox provides a culinary tour of the "best of Australia" in her book Possum Magic. Young people will learn about the geography and foods of the Land Down Under as they travel with Little Possum and his grandma searching for the foods that will make him visible again.

5 out of 5 stars Love the Poss!.......2007-06-12

As an Australian, this book is especially loved by me and now a hit with my children as well. It has a great lesson and is a heartwarming story. Mem is a genius!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read for a homesick Australian.......2006-11-11

My 12 month old loves the book & is keen to listen & look at the pictures every time I read it to him. It is fun reading it to him as well as I enjoy the reminders of my home in Australia. I am now living in America so it is a very good book to have. Mem Fox is the best & I love her style of writing - this has to be her best book ever!

Teammates is about 2 men named

Reese was white and Jackie rob-
Inson was black. They were both
Friends and helped each other out. The players on their team
Came mostly from the south, men

Were cruel to Jackie, calling him mean names from their
Dugouts. A few tried to hurt
Him with their spiked shoes.
It was bad for Jackie. Pitchers
Aimed for his head, and he
Received threats on his life,
Both from individuals and from
Oramizations like the Ku Klux
Klan. Jackie avoided all of it,
And made the team. Jackie and
Pee wee became really great
Friends and baseball legends.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2002-12-03

This book teaches you alot about how blacks were treated back in the day. When Jackie Robinsion was signed to the Dodgers the fans and players treated him really badly. People threw stuff at him. Then a young teammate stood up for him and saved him from being ban from the team. So you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.

5 out of 5 stars classic.......2002-08-29

A simple telling of how Jackie Robinson came to play in the major leagues, this book portrays the prejudice he faced in a basic way that children can understand. And it shines a bright light on a quiet moment: PeeWee Reese's brave public declaration of solidarity with his teammate. This book has been my son's favorite for the past two years, since he was five.

5 out of 5 stars Brooklyn Dodger Teammates: Jackie Robinson & Pee Wee Reese.......2002-04-02

"Teammates" tells the story of one of the more moving moments in the history of baseball that occurred during the 1947 season when the Brooklyn Dodgers traveled to Crosley Field in Cincinnati to play the Reds. Jackie Robinson, the first black man to play in the major leagues, was playing first base and being the target of hostility and abuse from the fans. At shortstop was Harold "Pee Wee" Reese, who born in the South, but who had refused to join other Southerners on the team in signing a petition to kick Jackie off the team. That day in Cincinnati, Reese did something that remains one of the bright moments of that historic season and which deserves to be more than a minor footnote in baseball history.

"Teammates" is written by Peter Golenbock, who heard the story of what happened that day from Rex Barney, who pitched for the Dodgers that day. Usually when the story of Jackie Robinson breaking the "color line" in baseball, the other key person in the story is Branch Rickey, the Dodger general manager. But Rickey could only support Robinson from the front office and not on the field, where it was Pee Wee Reese who decided to do something about that. Consequently, it is Reese who emerges as the hero of this particular story. Certainly it is safe to assume that anyone who reads this book knows something about Jackie Robinson; Golenbock talks about how Rickey needed somebody special to be the first, but does not get into the reasons why Robinson was that man (e.g., All-American football star at U.C.L.A., Army officer). But clearly "Teammates" is not intended to be the first book a youngster reads about the story of Jackie Robinson. Paul Bacon, as he did for the exquisite "Susanna of the Alamo," does both the design and illustration for this volume, combining historic photographs and items with his own watercolor paintings to tell the story.

5 out of 5 stars A few brave men.......2000-07-04

This book is a true story that vividly describes the era of baseball and the scoial climate of race relations in the early 1940's. The Brooklyn Dodgers were the first Major Leauge Baseball team to hire an African American. Branch Rickey of the Dodgers was looking for "a man strong enough not to fight back". Jackie Robinson was of course that man and it was known as the "Great Experiment". It was tough for Jackie who ws not well recieived by many whites, including his teammates. One teammate was different, he knew he should always do what is right even if everyone around him including family or friends felt differently, that man was Pewee Reese. This book looks at how racism affected many aspects of society and how the strength of one indidual can change many attitudes. There is a variety of mediums used for the illustrations that only enhance the book.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Repair Manual For Vehicle Owners.......2003-07-18

Save your money on Chilton. They do not hold near the information, clarity and in depth detail, thus VALUE, that Haynes Repair Manuals do. Having said that, I would like to address some complaints I've come across about both Haynes
and Chilton's Manuals.
1.) If your manual suggests at a point to seek professional input it is because MOST NON mechanics don't possess the skill or tools or shop equipment to perform a certain procedure (be it correctly or safely). The publishers' lawyer insisted on the "seek professional input" so as not to take on legal liability for an unqualified person attempting to perform a critical step in their car care. The reason is valid. You can injure yourself and damage your vehicle as well as render your
vehicle unsafe to be on the road.
2.) Prior to purchasing a repair manual, LOOK THROUGH IT. Almost every auto parts store in America sells Haynes and / or Chilton's. If the particular manual you need doesn't have the plastic removed, look for a manual that does and look through the sections. CAUTION most auto supply stores will get mad and make you buy anything you rip open. They're trying to sell information contained in the manual, not give it away. Some copies are USUALLY open and can be looked
at. Does the manual seem logical, good pictures? Thorough? Then CHANCES ARE that brand will be a good choice for your repair. Also READ the cover front & back thoroughly. It will tell you if special vehicles aren't covered (AWD, Alternate Fuel Vehicles, etc) Know what vehicle you have so you get the RIGHT manual. The correct year, make, model, engine size.
3.) If you do encounter a problem in the middle of a repair, it's possible that it is YOUR not doing something correctly. Not the tool, or the repair manual. Go away from the car, get lunch or a cold glass of lemonade, read through the manual. Even start again in the morning.
4.) As automobiles become more sophisticated, there is truly less and less that a vehicle owner can do him or herself. It is a fact, you will need to take your vehicle into a dealership or well equipped shop for more things. In addition, used oil and other fluids are difficult to dispose of. DO NOT THROW DOWN YOUR DRAIN OR BURY IN YOUR BACKYARD!!!. Tires, batteries all have special disposal needs.
5.) There are some people WHO ARE NOT MECHANICAL. Buy them books, audio / video equipment, ties for Christmas. NOT A WRENCH SET!
6.) Neither Haynes nor Chilton are Professional Shop Manuals (these are available for hundreds of dollars).
As for the particular manual for the Haynes (ASIN: 1563923580) Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager and Chrysler Town & Country from years 1996 through 1999: This manual does NOT COVER All-Wheel Drive nor Alternative Fuel Models AND SAYS SO ON THE COVERS. Haynes breaks down into different sections each of the engine options (in this example: 4 cylinder,3.0 liter V6, 3.3 liter V6, and 3.8 V6) If you're say, changing an air filter, make sure you're looking at the right directions for the engine for the vehicle you have. The different engines have important items positioned in different locations and thus DIFFERENT INSTRUCTIONS for each item on each engine. You can even utilize Amazon "take a look inside" feature to check out if this manual is for you or not. .I checked it's description for changing wiper blades, oil and oil filters, air filters and general repairs and found it both accurate and easy to understand. I've been happy with Haynes manuals over the years and recommend all vehicle owners purchase one even if you don't expect to do any repair or service yourself. It helps to know the information, to be aware of how your car works and to talk in a reasonably intelligent manner (on your part anyway) when you take your vehicle in for service.

I'm happy with this purchase. And have been with every Haynes manual I've bought and used in the last 20 years.

1 out of 5 stars Very Inaccurate.......2003-03-14

You would not be even able to change your air filter if you used this book. I tried to follow the instructions for changing the air filter on my 99 Grand Caravan, but I was left with frustration. This is just one inaccuracy I found. I would'nt be surprised if there are more.

Maybe the book is good for another year not for the 1999 Grand Caravan model.

4 out of 5 stars Gardening and nature.......2007-01-10

My daughter loves this book and I believe it is partly because we planted some bulbs together in the garden last fall. She just turned 3 and is in her first year of kindergarden. At school they are focusing on gardens this semester which is another reason I bought the book. She loves to pick flowers and will certainly enjoy seeing our "rainbow" grow this Spring. I only wish the book had been available as a board book or in a sturdier format as I fear it will not last too long.

5 out of 5 stars A big hit with my toddler.......2006-09-19

My 1 1/2 year old loves this book. She even calls it the Rainbow book. I bought it because I am really into gardening and she loves flowers. It is a great book to teach colors as well.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and Colorful........2006-09-14

This book would be perfect for a child who enjoys helping their parent with a garden, or a child mastering their color knowledge. It briefly explains the process of how a garden is started from seed/bulb, shows the growth of different colorful flowers and name the most common garden flowers. The pictures are basic but bold and color fills the pages which allows you to appreciate the next step in the process and the next page in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2006-07-28

My children have loved this book. With the pictures of the plants there are names next to each one. My kids liked to point and say the names of all of the flowers.

Pretty pictures and educational too!

5 out of 5 stars Clever Book!.......2003-11-12

My 3 year old daughter loves this book! We borrowed it from our local library, read it 2-3 times daily, and had great trauma returning it. It has now been a month since it went back and she is still talking about it and has it on her christmas list. She has impressed the neighbors by asking if they had any morning glories or delphiniums and she was eager to help me plant my bulbs and explore all the flowers in our yard. She has always been a flower lover, but this book really stimulated her interest.

Book Description

“Belongs in the bookshelf of every cruising vessel.”—Blue Water Sailing

“If you are serious about that extended voyage, read The Voyager’s Handbook.”—Sailing

“Every now and then a new voice emerges in the world of sailing literature that stands out, a voice that is both clear and of lasting quality. The appearance of such a new voice is something of an event, and that’s what we’d call the publication of The Voyager’s Handbook.”—Blue Water Sailing

This inspirational and comprehensive manual leads you step by step through every aspect of choosing, planning, and following the voyager’s life. Using three example boats representing three cruising lifestyles—Simplicity, Moderation, and Highlife—Beth Leonard helps make your bluewater dreams come true, whether you’re sailing on a shoestring or a CEO’s pension. Starting with the things you can’t do without—an enthusiastic crew, a seaworthy boat, and, of course, money—Leonard offers sage advice on how to select crewmembers who are truly committed to the voyage, how to choose the right boat for you, and how to find just the right approach to financing your voyage and making the most of every dollar spent.

Managing life from a floating home and keeping that home livable, seaworthy, and safe requires you to become, among other things, the ship’s purser, engineer, doctor, cook, and cruise director. You’ll discover how to prepare for these new roles and put necessary equipment and arrangements in place before you untie your docklines. This exquisitely detailed guide also helps you master the skills you’ll need to handle a boat at sea with a small crew, including

Complete with dozens of easy-to-use graphs and tables for quick reference, along with the hard-won wisdom of experienced cruisers, The Voyager’s Handbook is the ultimate resource for anyone who is planning, preparing for, or just dreaming about a great adventure on the high seas.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book FIRST! Best ocean voyaging preparation manual.......2007-10-01

To sufficiently prepare for, what we plan will be at least five years of ocean voyaging, we have purchased and read more than 20 books, in addition to subscribing to Seven Seas Crusing Association and reading greater than fifty online articles, user forums, blogs and websites. The Voyager's Handbook, is by far, the single best resource for preparing to sell out and sail off. The book is extremely well organized and conveniently offers topic specific browsing or cover-to-cover reading. We each read the book, with great appreciation, the first week it arrived. My husband and I have raced sailboats and cruised both sail and power boats for over twenty-five years. We have cruised and raced offshore. We have owned thirty boats. I mention this only to demonstrate that we are experienced boaters. We were thrilled at the quality and scope of this publication. We were seeking a comprehensive checklist/action plan and gained much more. We would have saved countless hours and over $500 if we would have found this book first. Neither of us know the author or anyone financially benefiting from the sale of this publication. We took the time to write only to help others prepare more efficiently, as we have benefited from the comments of both readers'and professional reviewers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent if planning to refit a boat for offshore.......2007-03-17

Terrific book which finally made it clear to me why I had been ground into the dust refitting an older boat; namely, the enormous number of jobs and the huge amount of labour required to refit a 20 year old boat, even if in moderately good condition.

Table 4-5, page 117, lists desired upgrades for three styles of offshore voyagers - simplicity, moderation and highlife. Their costs and labour are shown in detail in Chapter 10, Putting it All Together From Refit Plan to Balanced Boat, pages 248-266.

There is also a real world FOUR YEAR refit example and information on what was left off going from Leonard's Silk to Hawk.

This is NOT in the first edition, which for me makes the second edition the only choice.

This book is as necessary as Hal Roth's How to Sail Around the World and Nigel Calder's Mechanical and Electrical Manual and Cruising Handbook

2 out of 5 stars I liked the first edition better.......2007-02-08

Some things are best left as they were. The first edition was simple to read, and did not seem to be trying to be the most complete guide to cruising ever written. Unfortunately I loaned my copy to a friend and it never came back so I ordered a new copy and got this one. I think the author has tried to write about too many subjects and include too many different ideas- it comes off like a compendium of conflicting ideas. Also this book more than the previous edition shows the author has a pretty big budget. Not the best guide for those of us with more limited funds.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource & very readable.......2007-01-10

This is the book we have been looking for! Very easy to read, but has lots of very useful information for anyone wanting to go offshore sailing. Gets you organizing your thought processes and keeps you focused. Good sense of humor and very descriptive - feel like you are right there with them in the discussions. Recommend to anyone thinking about offshore but also read her other book as well!!

5 out of 5 stars WHAT A MASTERPIECE!!!!! .......2006-12-06

First of all, I am not a child of 13, this was the only space I could find to write this review. As a matter of fact, I am a grandmother and I have recently return from a two year, double handed, Atlantic circle. I have sailed all my life.

Beth Leonard has produced the most valuable book I have ever seen for cruisers of any level. I wish I could give it to everyone I've met along my voyages. I can't think of anyone who would not benefit. Certainly not a frilly coffee table item, instead, something of real value. An encyclopedia of research and a dedicated documentation of pratical information.
