Michael Connelly, whose novel The Poet won the 1997 Anthony Award for Best Mystery, is already recognized as one of the smartest and most vivid scribes of the hard-boiled police procedural. Now, with his much-anticipated sixth Harry Bosch novel, Angels Flight, Connelly offers one of the finest pieces of mystery writing to appear in 1998. Bosch is awakened in the middle of the night and, out of rotation, he is assigned to the murder investigation of the high-profile African American attorney Howard Elias. When Bosch arrives at the scene, it seems that almost the entire LAPD is present, including the IAD (the Internal Affairs Division). Elias, who made a career out of suing the police, was sadistically gunned down on the Angels Flight tram just as he was beginning a case that would have struck the core of the department; not surprisingly, L.A.'s men and women in blue become the center of the investigation. Haunted by the ghost of the L.A. riots, plagued by incessant media attention, and facing turmoil at home, Bosch suddenly finds himself questioning friends and associates while working side by side with some longtime enemies.

Angels Flight is a detective's nightmare scenario and is disturbingly relevant to the racially tense last decade of the 20th century. Amidst the twists and turns of his complex narrative, Connelly affirms his rightful place among the masters of contemporary mystery fiction. --Patrick O'Kelley

The man most hated by the LAPD--a black lawyer who has made his name by bringing lawsuits alleging racism and brutality by police officers--has been found murdered on the eve of a high-profile trial. The list of suspects includes half the police force. And Harry Bosch is the detective chosen to head the investigation The political dangers of the case are huge. If it's not investigated fairly, the public outcry could make the Rodney King riots look tame. But a full investigation will take Bosch into the ugliest corners of law enforcement. To make matters worse, Bosch's wife Elizabeth has disappeared overnight. Bosch fears she has left him--or succumbed further to her gambling addiction. He's not sure which is worse. Angels Flight reads in a white heat. It continues to up the ante of the series that is "raising the hard-boiled detective novel to a new level . . . adding substance and depth to modern crime fiction." (Boston Globe)

5 out of 5 stars Taut mystery.......2007-09-12

This novel is the latest in the "Harry Bosch" mysteries. Mr. Bosch is a hard boiled Los Angeles detective, whose life is far from perfect. His detective skills though, are wonderful.

I loved this book. The police procedures were entirely believable, and as an Angeleno, I enjoyed the accuracy of Mr. Connelly's descriptions of L.A.

I highly recommend this great read. It will not disappoint!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-08-05

pros:
usual Harry Bosch character

cons:
opening crime not very interesting.
tension between Harry's crew and IAD not very engaging.
plot moves ahead sluggishly.

I had to give up reading this at p. 170 of 454.

As usual, minimal character development. Emphasis is merely on plot. I saw little of Harry's personal life, except for his occasional attempts to call his wife. (But this is true of ALL Michael Connelly books. And I usually put up with it.)

5 out of 5 stars Racial politics and murder in LA.......2007-07-27

Edgar and Anthony award-winner Connelly takes a high dive right into the turbulent currents of Los Angeles' racial tensions in this Detective Harry Bosch appearance.

On the eve of a major lawsuit against the LAPD, high-profile civil-rights lawyer Howard Elias is shot. "Bosch thought about all the suspects there would be, many of them standing around outside at that very moment, watching." The obvious suspects are the police; and the black populace, on the brink of rioting, demands action.

Suing the police for beating a confession out of a (black) suspected (white) child murderer, since acquitted, Elias has polarized the city. But Bosch soon discovers that the lawyer had more going for him than racial politics; he had evidence - evidence that the accused child killer, still presumed guilty, was truly innocent. Elias was confident of victory, but his big secret died with him.

Find the secret, find Elias' killer, Bosch realizes. But retracing Elias' steps proves difficult, especially with the police stonewalling, the black community clamoring, and Elias' files off-limits. With adroit compassion, Connelly ("Blood Work," "The Black Echo") explores the complexities of racial politics, using the hidden passions and public maneuvering to heighten suspense.

Meanwhile, his wife's gambling habit is draining their marriage and city anger is nearing explosion. Bosch steps on toes and strains friendships as he pursues the sordid human mystery, unrelated but now at the core of all this political fury.

Thoughtful, suspenseful, masterfully plotted and well written - as readers have come to expect from Connelly.

4 out of 5 stars CONNELLY EXAMINES RACE RELATIONS IN LA.......2006-09-02

Bosch is back. A high-profile, black, civil right attorney is slain and Harry Bosch is given the assignment to find the murderer. To those unfamiliar with Detective Bosch, he is not a "go along to get along" guy. He tells it like he sees it even if it rankles the Chief of Police, the FBI or other police officers. That is much of the fun in reading a Harry Bosch novel. And I use the word "novel" in its literary sense; Mr. Connelly has written a novel in ANGEL'S FLIGHT, not a police procedural, although it is a wonderful example of that as well. ANGEL's FLIGHT is really about race relations in Los Angeles and about police-minority relations in particular. The murder mystery in ANGEL'S FLIGHT is just the hat tree on which to hang the fedora of political and racial insights. This is the sixth in the Bosch series and the best-written so far (I am reading them in the order published); Mr. Connelly keeps growing as a writer. For me, the ending was just a little two pat in terms of poetic as well as legal justice being served to make this a five-star book, but one reads Mr. Connelly to learn about Harry Bosch and see him in action more than anything else. At least I do.

5 out of 5 stars Pretty close to perfect..........2006-08-24

Angels Flight was the first Michael Connelly/Harry Bosch book that I read and when I picked it up four years ago, I realized that Connelly was no ordinary mystery writer. It took three more years to finally read the rest of this series, and since finishing them all, I wanted to go back and reread Angels Flight as I didn't remember much of what happened. Not only did I enjoy it just as much the second time around, but it remains one of my very favorite Bosch mysteries.

Howard Elias in a black civil rights lawyer who has made a name for himself suing the LAPD (this is a post Rodney King/OJ Los Angeles). One of his clients is Michael Harris, a man who was acquitted of kidnapping and murdering a young girl, Stacey Kincaid. He is now suing 15 members of the LAPD's Robbery and Homicide Division (RHD) for torturing him in trying to obtain a confession. Two days before the trial is to open, Elias is murdered. There are a whole bunch of cops who would like to see Elias dead and the citizens of LA believe a man in blue did the killing. They expect that the LAPD will close ranks and engage in a cover-up to protect their own. Tempers are raging and the city is on the verge of riots. Normally, this high profile case would fall to RHD. But since they're all suspects, it is given to Harry Bosch and his partners, Kiz Rider and Jerry Edgar. IAD and the FBI are also put on the case, which makes things more interesting and more complicated.

Bosch discovers that during the Michael Harris trial, Elias was planning to expose the real killer in the Stacey Kincaid murder. He decides to go back to square one in the Kincaid murder, believing that the killer of Kincaid and Elias are the same person. In the course of the investigation, Bosch is shocked at what he discovers--from a child pornography ring to the bad judgment of those he thought he knew and trusted. Through it all, the LAPD is trying to whitewash anything detrimental to the force.

Connelly writes with true feeling and with the knowledge of one who has lived in LA and written the crime beat there. When Kiz Rider picks up on Bosch's personal problems, Bosch muses "Her having picked up on his personal turmoil was a testament to her skill as a detective--reading people was always more important than reading clues." Also, a black lawyer attempts to explain to Bosch the reasons for the rioting in LA: "It's about hope, detective...The minority communities of Los Angeles have no power, have no money, have no voice...When you take hope away, it leaves a void. Some people fill that up with anger and violence."

The Angels Flight case does not quite play out so that all the issues are resolved. Then again, we don't live in a perfect world. But Connelly comes pretty close to perfect in writing this book.

Several weeks ago, I picked up a Harry Bosch novel in a local book store. Since then I have ordered 12 other of the series from Amazon. I only have three left to read. Each novel stands alone, but if you read the series in order, it's a lot more fun. Great detectuve stories by a very readable author.

Harry Bosch is now a 'friend'. When I needed relief from my busy life - I
escaped by reading his cases. I am ordering more Michael Connelly books!!

5 out of 5 stars A great read!.......2006-08-28

After reading the "Dark Tower" series, twice, I was looking for another series for my reading time. I never had read any kind of mystery/crime/police type novels before. I kind of feel like I started with the best which is kind of depressing, I will always compare anything else in this genre to Harry Bosch!

I love Harry! Yea he has an attitude, and you would too if you were lugging the steamer trunk of baggae he does.

This book is essentially 4-6 of the Harry Bosch run. Worth the time and money!

4 out of 5 stars Well up to his high standard.......2006-03-10

As I write this I have only read book #1, The Last Coyote and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It is probably best, I think, to read the Bosch novels in sequence; then you may appreciate better the developing plots which sometimes refer back to previous events. But each novel can, of course, be enjoyed on its own.

    Book Description

History is filled with stories of adventure. This account, however, also includes the unmistakable presence of the hand of God. Angel Flight 44: The True Story of Two Dedicated Pilots, a 60-Year-Old Airplane, and the Amazing Hurricane Katrina Mission That Birthed a New Aviation Ministry is a book born out of supernatural flight missions that saved countless lives by the grace of God. Not to be confused with the pre-existing Angel Flight medical air transportation organizations, the new Angel Flight 44 ministry revealed in these pages has its own unique mission and a most miraculous beginning. The miraculous adventure of humanitarian relief that pilot Glen Hyde and copilot Denny Ghiringhelli experienced is a remarkable tale of mercy in the face of catastrophe, and the love of God expressed through His supernatural intervention. Two world-renowned ministries partnered with a veteran aviator and his Douglas Super DC-3, an American Airlines 767 captain, numerous companies, and a storm-wearied pastor in Slidell, Louisiana, to obey a call from God to help hurting people. However, this relief mission not only saved many hurricane victims, it forever changed the lives of the people who conducted it. The numerous testimonies of this adventure have already profoundly impacted the thousands who have heard them. Now that they are collected within this book, these stories should similarly impact you. AUTHOR INFORMATION: GLEN HYDE is a veteran aviator of more than forty years. He began his aviation career as an agricultural pilot and later served his country as a United States Marine Corps fighter pilot. He has worked as a commercial aviator for airlines and air freight companies is a flight instructor and licensed A&P mechanic, has built, restored, and flown vintage aircraft, and owns a successful airport in North Texas, which is home to over 500 general aviation aircraft. His most rewarding accomplishment to date, however, is flying the remarkable Hurricane Katrina and Rita relief missions with copilot Denny Ghiringhelli, the story of Angel Flight 44. RICH VERMILLION is an ordained Gospel minister, public speaker, businessman, and author. In addition to writing the accounts contained in Angel Flight 44, he has also penned other inspiring Christian books. Rich has appeared on local, national, and international television programs; and has been interviewed on dozens of radio broadcasts around the United States and Canada, including Billy Graham's Decision Today radio broadcast. A dynamic speaker, Rich has also addressed groups ranging upwards to thousands in number.

    Book Description

In 1946 the Blue Angels first took wing; a team of four pilots flew the Grumman F6F Hellcat, in daring air shows conceived by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Chief of Naval Operations. And in the 60 years since then, V and Echelon formations gave way to awe-inspiring Diamond maneuvers and solo tricks like the Dirty Loop and the Tuck-away Break. The six-man teams moved into the jet age with the McDonnell Douglas IA-18 Hornet. More than 350 million spectators around the world have thrilled to the Blue Angels precision flying. Arriving on the Blue Angels 60th anniversary, this book is a fitting tribute to these representatives of naval aviation and international ambassadors of good will. In soaring words and photographs, The Blue Angels: A Fly-By History celebrates the popular units feats, key figures, and aircraft: from Flight Leader Roy Butch Voris first outing in 1946 to the time of the Korean Conflict, when the Blue Angels formed the nucleus of a fighter squadron known as Satans Kittens; from 1974, when the team donned a new aircraft, the McDonnell Douglas A-4F Skyhawk II, to the breathtaking air shows of today.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book About America's favorite Aviators - The Blue Angels!.......2006-08-04

Nicholas Veronico has produced a marvelous collection of photos, history, stories and reference data on America's most popular aviation group in his coffee table sized book "The Blue Angels - A Fly-By History: Sixty Years Of Aerial Excellence." It is sure to please all Blue Angel fans world wide. There is so much more to his book than some cold history about the group. This book gives you both the men and their flying machines in a perfect and balanced presentation.

The book not only looks great with many photos of the planes in action but the text digs deeply into the history and personalities involved with making this team a sixty year hit. The author uses some good editing and an easy to follow format to share this group's story. It is obvious that there was some detailed research that enshrines this whole book project. It feels like a labor of love from the author and comes across in an entertaining style. The book is a tribute to a wonderful group of aviators.

It will sit proudly on your coffee table or in your book shelf but if you leave it lying around the office or the house, people will begin picking it up and browsing through it - the temptation is just too great to fondle and ogle it. The good thing about this book is that it is just as much fun to look at and read the second or the third time or even the first one hundred times you pick it up. It is a collector's book to be cherished and displayed.

The MWSA gives this book its highest rating of FIVE STARS!

3 out of 5 stars Great pictoral history, but.............2005-12-28

otherwise somewhat limited in scope. Chronological history of the Blue Angel squadron. It won't end up being used as a reference for BA history, but it gives a good overview for the casual BA enthusiast. Pictures are great, and otherwise rare.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-03-31

Bell and Peterson have done it again. If the first book in the Shannon Saga didn't make you a fan for life, this one could. Kit's amazing in the courtroom and has a tough life outside of the courtroom. Will Kit stand by and let racism and sexism rule LA, not likely. Ah, but the hows. How can one likable woman get half the city of Los Angeles raving mad at her? How can Kit crack uncooperative witnesses and hostile policemen?

(The plot twists and turns and genuine good old fashioned storytelling make the pages fly by.)

5 out of 5 stars They did it again.......2004-01-16

I hope these two get together again in the future on another project. This book was incredible. The twists and turns leaves you with no choice but to keep reading. The characters are well developed. What I found amazing, was that the same racial tension that does exist today, existed back then. Kit does an admirable job while keeping to her faith and sense of Christian duty. I look forward to Angel of Mercy, which I know won't let me down. I strongly urge that you buy all three of this incredible series.

    5 out of 5 stars Continued Goodness.......2002-08-07

    ...

Peterson and Bell have crafted another highly suspenseful novel. It will definitely keep you asking, "What really happened" and the courtroom scenes are some of the best in the book. Kit is, as always, an inspiring female character with admirable convictions and enviable smarts. Although the "love" side of this book definitely took a back seat to the "courtroom" aspects of it, I thought that that was understandable and realistic. It is hardly like Kit is going to be searching for Mr. Right and evidence for her case at the same time, and it is made clear throughout the series that Kit feels God leading her to practice law at this time in her life... Read this book-and have the third book in this series ready for after you turn the last page of "Angels Flight".

    5 out of 5 stars A great series!.......2001-11-21

This is a really great series judging from the first two books. I love the setting of Los Angeles in the early 1900's, and Kit Shannon is a wonderful character. She is inspiring and strong, but not in a false way (which is how I feel about too many of the women characters in novels today).

All in all, this is a terrific saga and I hope it continues (I know there is at least one more book to come, and I hope it's soon!)

    4 out of 5 stars whimsical fantasy.......2003-11-07

Everyone who resides in Auroville, California from Mayor Porter to the town bum believes that the Keeshan brood is a bunch of lunatics. That opinion holds though the elderly patriarch is a bestselling author making millions per book but that is because visitors seeing him are forced to buy the book by cult members. Residents rationalize their belief based on his weird novels, his semi-comatose spouse, and his grandson thirteen year old Ward, who is often seen holding animated discussions with himself while insisting that an angel is his companion. Even the parents of Ward's best friend June prefer their daughter find a new pal as they believe Ward is a nut.

Though he would prefer chess with his invisible friend Timothy, Walt's insistence that he has a guardian angel opens the floodgates. The world descends on Auroville. As the town divides between religious believers, agnostic skeptics, and hostile atheists, Ward and his grandpa encouraged by angels begin a quest for a better world. Today Auroville, tomorrow the UN, but none of the in crowd wants to give up their entitlements.

This whimsical fantasy will provide plenty of delight for fans of angels or those who really care about the downtrodden. The story line moves slowly forward at first as the personalities of the key players (including Timothy) are established. Once the plot goes into gear buoyed by the angels, readers will hope for the best for the Keeshans and their supporters. The character names pay homage to heroes while the dedication sums up the book best as the author states that "May Miss Francis, Mr. Rogers, and Captain Kangaroo always prevail over Hoover, McCarthy, and Ashcroft".

    1 out of 5 stars Horrible!.......2001-01-09

How this book was published is beyond me. Nothing happens in the stories (that are about depressed boring people) and I had to force myself to finish it. A complete waste of time!

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......1999-10-11

I have got all of her books but I couldn't read this one. It failed to engage me and I gave it 100 pages. I tried to read it five or six times and finally had to stick it back on the shelf. Her work, like most authors, seems to be unpredictable. A good book will be followed by a mediocre collection of stories. Go figure. I loved the cover.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......1999-01-09

Utterly disappointing. Reads as though Ms. Gilchrist has become a paycheck writer, turning out product with no interest in quality. Where has the exceptional author of "The Anna Papers" gone?

4 out of 5 stars If you hated Sarah Conley. . ........1998-11-03

. . . you'll be pleased with Flights of Angels. Ellen Gilchrist's books are as trashy as this book-snob will go. Rain or shine I'll disappear to my room, with food (no cigs or drugs any more)& read every word. Flights of Angels brings Gilchrist's easy, southern, characters back; every thing they do - whatever decade - makes sense. And if you are a Gilchrist fan that's all you need to know to read it. Make sure you get that geneology chart out though, names will be familiar but it's so easy to forget the details. I give it 4 stars only because short stories make me want a novel.
