5 out of 5 stars Another Wonderful Book.......2007-05-27

I read this wonderful book to myself the day I got it. I was thrileed and couldn't wait for the next book to come out. It takes place in New York City in 1938 during the Great Depression. jack and Annie have to find a unicorn. But how will they find one in a big city? Finally Jack and Annie find the unicorn, whose name is Dianthus. But just then two teenagers named Balor and Grinda burst in and try and take Dianthus. Jack and Annie escape with the unicorn, and stop in Central Park. There, Balor and Grinda show up, and Annie recites her favorite magic rhyme, Turn Into Ducks. Balor and Grinda turn into ducks.

Teddy and Kathleen, Merlin and Morgan, show up and the two other teenagers ride Dianthus home to Camelot. Jack and Annie travel home in the Magic Tree House, and merlin and Morgan take a ride around New York City.

For ANY fans of the magic tree house, MAGIC TREE HOUSE #36: BLIZZARD OF THE BLUE MOON, I reccomend you read this wonderful book. You will be so surprised that you read this book over and over again!

1 out of 5 stars Goody, Goody. Sugar and gooey talks down to kids........2007-05-11

I felt insulted for my seven year olds intelligence. These books not only murder the myth of Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur (Merlin and Morgan best buddies and silly wizards) but the writing here is bland and boring. The prose reads aloud like a robot's voice.

The story is full of holes and illogical points. Why, why, why are these two older kids following the little kids but not giving them information. I don't understand why Merlin and the older kids know everything that has to be done, knows where and how to do it, but instead of telling the little kids they send to do it, they give them poems that give them hints to figure out. I wanted to scream at them.

Why doesn't the author use pronouns? Even early readers can read pronouns. The use of proper nouns for names and the constant repeating of information makes the books more fit for preschoolers than early readers.

By advice, buy Junie B. and Lemmony Snickets, better books, better writting.

I love fantasy and have been reading since before I started school nearly 30 years ago. I can't subject my children to this poorly writen garbage. All I can say is, thank whoever for Harry Potter teaching people that childrens litterature doesn't have to suck.

4 out of 5 stars Capturing The Unicorn.......2007-04-13

Blizzard of The Blue Moon by Mary Pope Osborne was a fun, entertaining book that I would recommend to elementary school kids, because it's a lower reading level. It all begins when Jack and Annie go in there tree house that goes to wherever they want. They had to go to New York City to rescue a unicorn. The tree house landed at Central Park, and there was a BIG blizzard. They got on the subway so they could get closer. A lady told them the wrong stop that was really far away from where they needed to go so they took a taxi to try to get closer. The taxi ended up getting snowed in, so they just got out and walked. Jack and Annie had block's and block's to go.

As Jack and Annie are walking there far distance, thinking they needed to go to the zoo, they decided to hit the museum to warm up. This nice museum lady said she was very excited, since she hadn't had any costumers all day. She suggested they stay a while, since there was going to be a huge blizzard. She wanted to inform them on some older facts, that probably nobody knew nothing about. She talked for a long time, about boring things, that practically put them to sleep. Jack finally stooped her with an interruption, and said "we need to get some work done." So she showed them the way to the back of museum, and said "why don't you take a look there, because you'll enjoy it." Jack and Annie had no idea why there were going there, but maybe there could be the unicorn that they need to capture. So they went right along, through a double set of doors, to the outside, and back into a different building. Right when they enter, and to the left there was a HUGE picture of an unicorn that would capture your eyes in a second. From that moment on, they knew that was the right unicorn. Jack got into his backpack a read a poem form the book. All of a sudden, the unicorn came to life. Oh no. Just now two people showed up who were also trying to get the unicorn. Now were going to have to fight for him.

Make sure you read this book and find out what happens. I would recommend it to you any day.

We read these books together and although they are all different there are some repetitions from previous books. We love this series, but the last 12 books have to be read in order because of clues. We suggest reading them in number order from one all the way to the last number.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Anita Blake makes a living raising the dead. She also executes rogue vampires and villains among the local were-folk. Marks bind her to Jean-Claude, the Master vampire of St. Louis and her lover, and to her ex-fiancé, a powerful werewolf who heads up the local pack. Anita shares some of their magic, and her own power over the dead keeps growing. But so does the body count and the situations that force Anita to bend or break her own rules.

In Blue Moon, Anita's ex Richard is jailed in Tennessee, accused of rape. When Anita arrives with a lawyer and an entourage of vampires and 'weres' supplied by Jean-Claude, it's clear that something is rotten in Myerton. The local cops are corrupt, and the trolls Richard was studying are threatened. But if she sticks around to investigate, the local Master vampire will attack her and her friends. The local werewolf clan isn't rushing to welcome her either, and her self-control is going to the, um, wolves.

Blue Moon is the eighth book in Hamilton's Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series; newcomers should start with earlier books. The protagonists' development and their relationships to each other and to the large cast of continuing secondary characters are what make these books so compelling. Be warned--there's steamy sex and graphic violence here, though Anita does reflect on her moral position. But if dark urban fantasy featuring those who hunt the night appeals, pounce on this series. --Nona Vero

3 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-26

Anita discovers it is tricky to have all those supernatural powers and supernatural leadership responsibilities. So much so, she has to get lessons from others, and help from a witch to deal with some of it before she is overwhelmed.

Throw in werewolf shagging and her having to deal with the jealousy of the situation with Richard, who reckons if she can do whoever, so can he. He, of course, has some hot wolf girls after him, considering he is the boss.

1 out of 5 stars shallow.......2007-08-19

I was terribly disappointed with this book.
Introduction of all type of vague monster lore that culminates to nothing.
Plot development is weak.
Constant sexual inuendo that serves no purpose.
So much sexual reference it totally distracts from any plot development.
Painful to read.

3 out of 5 stars The end is nigh..........2007-02-28

Ah for those innocent days when this series still had potential and we didn't know what was coming next. Back when Blue Moon was released things still looked good, we had the possibilities of a true Triumvirate of Power being formed to look forward to, we saw Richard stand up to Anita and set terms for their relationship, well before his unexpected and poorly written meltdown in later books. The book still had a plot and a purpose back then.

What a shame it wouldn't last.

Blue Moon is the last book in what was the original series. Though many fans will tell you the next book Obsidian Butterfly is still good, Blue Moon is the last book when all the real characters where on the page together, even if only in spirit. It was the last book that had any real emotion to it, any real zip. It was the last book before Hamilton began retroactively changing her series into something unrecognizable. Blue Moon is the last book that suggests there is a positive future ahead for Anita, Richard and Jean Claude. Blue Moon is the last book most people should ever read in this series.

Blue Moon takes Anita out of town, out of her element. Richard has been arrested for rape, and Anita in usual fashion doesn't believe he can get himself out of trouble and so against Jean Claude's wishes rushes off to save him. Corrupt cops, a demon summoning wizard, a rival Master vampire, a ghost from the past and werewolf pack politics drives the last real Anita Blake Vampire Hunter story, and once upon a time it was good. There's plot, purpose, action, character development, sex that was still fresh and new, and even a Richard who can stand up to Anita without coming across as a jerk.

But the writing is as they say on the wall; looking back many of the flaws that would so cripple the last books Hamilton has released are there in larval form, just waiting to chew their way maggot like through the writing. Dropped plot threads, shifting details, grammatical weaknesses, and an over abundance of re-used lines fill the book, but at least the editor at the time could catch basic spelling mistakes unlike now.

4 out of 5 stars Still Great.......2006-12-04

I very much enjoyed Blue Moon. This book focused on the relationship between Richard and Anita. They've been at war of sorts since Anita left him for Jean Claude.

In Blue Moon, Anita is forced to face Richard and how she really feels about him. At this point the books are REALLY focusing on sex a great deal. It seems a little overboard but the storyline is still great for the series.

4 out of 5 stars When the good little Boy Scout gets into trouble...it's Anita Blake to the rescue!.......2006-11-18

Just when she thought that things couldn't get any more complicated, Anita receives a call from Richard's brother telling her that her ex-fiancé is in jail for allegedly raping a woman. To make matters worse, it is only a few days from full moon and if Richard's real identity is revealed, all hope of ever getting him out of prison will be lost. And so with vampires and lycanthropes in tow, Anita heads to Tennessee to rescue the werewolf king. However, things take a turn for the worse when the local Master of the City accuses them of trying to dethrone him. To add to the problem, Anita is feeling the burden of her ever-growing powers and the responsibility of being werewolf Lupa and were-leopard Nimir-Ra.

As part of the powerful triumvirate, Anita is finding out more and more each day that her power comes at a heavy price. Everyone wants a piece of her; her newly-adopted wereleopards are becoming more dependent on her, the werewolves want her to act like a real lupa, but the scariest of all is the vengeful spirit that is intent on possessing her--that of Raina's. Having discovered her power to control the call of the munin, it appears that Anita has one more lesson to learn, that of controlling the munin that calls to her from beyond. She either rides it or let it ride her, in which case she could very well lose her sanity. As if worrying about her love life isn't enough to lose her sanity over...

When Hamilton took a different spin by forming the triumvirate between Anita, Jean-Claude and Richard, it was also the start of Anita's invincibility. It was pretty much like we knew that she could handle everything that came her way. So how do you make her more human like she was at the start of the series? Make her vulnerable. And that's what the author does in BLUE MOON. In this book, we see Anita's struggle to accept her powers and deal with her fears that she is becoming the very thing that she used to annihilate without a second thought--a monster.

But moral dilemma aside, BLUE MOON keeps the horror going and also takes on a kinky aspect (as what happens at the lupanar). We knew that sexually things would eventually progress between Anita and Richard; it was simply a question of when. Beware: this isn't a stand-alone book, don't start with this one if you haven't read any of the earlier books.

First published in 1982, William Least Heat-Moon's account of his journey along the back roads of the United States (marked with the color blue on old highway maps) has become something of a classic. When he loses his job and his wife on the same cold February day, he is struck by inspiration: "A man who couldn't make things go right could at least go. He could quit trying to get out of the way of life. Chuck routine. Live the real jeopardy of circumstance. It was a question of dignity."

Driving cross-country in a van named Ghost Dancing, Heat-Moon (the name the Sioux give to the moon of midsummer nights) meets up with all manner of folk, from a man in Grayville, Illinois, "whose cap told me what fertilizer he used" to Scott Chisholm, "a Canadian citizen ... [who] had lived in this country longer than in Canada and liked the United States but wouldn't admit it for fear of having to pay off bets he made years earlier when he first 'came over' that the U.S. is a place no Canadian could ever love." Accompanied by his photographs, Heat-Moon's literary portraits of ordinary Americans should not be merely read, but savored.

4 out of 5 stars Makes me want to buy a truck and hit the road.......2007-08-16

This author speaks to the yearning in many of us to "hit the road" and not only see what our amazing country is all about, but also to see what we're all about. It's typical in some ways: snapshots of various odd and lovely and not-so-lovely places along America's disappearing back roads. We not only see these places vividly, but also meet the lively and unusual people the author encounters. I don't know if such a journey is possible these days. It seems like we're running out of blue highways and that franchise eateries and stores are taking over even the out-of-the-way places. The book makes me want to hurry up, to buy that truck and put a mattress in the back -- before it's too late. Well-written, entertaining, thought-provoking: this is a timeless book about a timeless journey.

5 out of 5 stars A Roadtrip Classic.......2007-08-11

A man in search of himself aka "the Rand McNally approach to self-discovery" (T. McGuane). After he loses his job and his marriage falls apart, Least Heat-Moon hits the road for a 3 month odyssey around the country (makes sense to me!). He equips his van for sleeping and cooking, takes 400 bucks and two books (Leaves of Grass & Black Elk Speaks) with him, and heads out for some clarity. His only agenda is to stay off the Interstates and seek out an America that is/has rapidly faded away.

This book has some faint echoes of "Travels with Charley" and "On the Road"; yet the philosophical musings and colorful character profiles in these pages sets it far apart from any other similar travel book.

Least Heat-Moon's wit is lean and engaging; his honest depictions of the people & places he encounters; and the manifold keen observations as he's driving down the back roads of this country, are the meat & potatoes of this wonderful book. He writes well and metaphorically; this is a good mix of the poetic & the philosophical.

The voice of the storyteller is this man's gift to the rest of us. This is one of those first books that blows out of nowhere, grabbing you and not letting go until the last page has been digested. Least Heat-Moon's poetic descriptions of the landscapes he drives through mixed with the interior terrain he muses his way through blend together very well.

This book registers very high on the reading enjoyment meter.

I have mixed emotions on this one.
The reason I gave 3 stars was that it was the average
of the lovers and haters.
Try reading these two books for a comparison.

3 out of 5 stars Blue Highways Sometimes wanders.......2007-03-10

When I first started to read Blue Highways, I was expecting a travelogue but quickly realized that it was the story of man in search of what life is all about and how different people see and cope with life. The travel was interesting and so were the people he met along the way. However he wishes to give the impression that he is of the people but writes like he is way above them. At times I felt that I needed to read the book with a dictionary beside me. I would have liked him to come to some conclusions about his life by the end of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Starting to stray from the murder/mystery but fills info on her role as lead of the weres.......2007-04-24

Thus far, the plots haven't really nose-dived yet (as most folks said after Anita loses her chastity streak). If I read Burnt Offerings & Blue Moon out of sync I prob would have been disappointed but I didn't so I appreciated the fact that LKH is building the story of Anita's role as a leader of the werewolves & wereleopards. Ok, so LKH says over & over in previous books that Anita doesn't agree to her being beautiful yet all these folks are starting to fall 4 her left & right? I understand only Nathaniel falling 4 her like that since he's so frail anyway. As for Richard & Jean-Claude - at least they were her interests to begin with. But w/Damien starting to be infatuated w/her & all...it was cool that they realize he's her vampire servant but when he was trying to bed her & all...it was like a distraction from plot.

Burnt Offerings was the better of the two novels. It showed Anita's growing commitment to JC & at the same time her remorse for not choosing Richard. Blue Moon had too much catty ex-girlfriend/lover drama. And the whole love scene btwn her & Richard was so...superficial. I think it tried to be a bit more sentimental but it didn't really work for me. The morning after was nicer than the actual dirty deed. It was great when Anita starts to realize her other powers in Blue Moon though. The roasting vampires scene was pretty cool. I think every Anita novel so far has mentioned how she's Christian but her faith gets put to the ultimate test with the monster she fights in this story. Richard's brother & mother get held captive and there are torture scenes in here that will either make you squirm or put a twinkle in your eye as you're agreeing with what Anita's doing. Read & enjoy!

3 out of 5 stars Bait and Switch Tactic.......2006-03-23

The only reason I gave this book three stars is because the books that it contains are actually some of my favorites. Having said that, however, I REALLY object to the publishers putting compilations of previously published books out under new titles without stamping "REISSUE OF PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED WORK"in HUGE red letters on the front. I've purchased too many of these thinking they were books that I hadn't yet read, only to find out that they are the same old books -- just a new cover and or title. FOUL PLAY!!!

4 out of 5 stars Life and Death with Anita Blake after she picks Jean-Claude.......2005-05-01

The first eight novels in Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series are collected in three hardback volumes of which "Black Moon Inn" is the third. "Club Vampyre" had the first three novels ("Guilty Pleasures," "The Laughing Corpse, and "Circus of the Damned"), and "The Midnight Cafe" had the next three ("Lunatic Cafe," "Bloody Bones," and "Killing Dance"). That last one is the pivotal novel in the series because Anita finally chooses Jean-Claude, the Master Vampire of St. Louis over Richard, the werewolf middle-school teachers. But we now know that nothing is every settled in the world of Anita Blake when it comes to either her tangled love life or her growing supernatural powers. The stories collected in "Black Moon Inn" are a notch below most of the previous stories, but are still part of the premier horror series of our time.

I expected there to be a let down after Anita made her big choice in the previous novel but "Burnt Offerings," the seventh in the series definitely tries to top what has gone before, as several members of the Vampire Council arrive in St. Louis intending to deal harshly with Jean-Claude. Remember back when Anita killed Oliver, the ancient vampire who wanted the U.S. to strip away the rights given to vampires? Well, it seems Oliver was a member of the Council and Jean-Claude has refused to take his place as custom dictates. Plus, the triumvirate established between our heroine and her two paramours is also potentially threatening to the Council. Then there are a couple of vampires with mondo grudges against our little group. Meanwhile, there appears to be a pyrokinetic arsonist running around and the anti-Vampire groups are escalating their attacks.

This story continues Hamilton's interest in providing graphic sexual violence as she continues to up the horror ante. But her novels continue to end the same way, with Anita discovering she is more powerful than she or anybody else thought and turning the tables on the bad monsters at the last minute. Each time this trick gets turned it becomes less and less impressive, and if Jean-Claude or Richard or someone else were to save the day once it would not be a bad thing since it would break what is becoming the standard formula of these novels. The political intrigues of the Vampire Council are quite interesting, and the powers of the Traveler and the Master of Beasts suggests bigger and badder vamps yet to be met. Or maybe, horror or horrors, Anita's dad will show up (he is not at all happy about Jean-Claude).

In "Blue Moon," the eighth volume, Anita drops everything to rush to Tennessee where Richard has been arrested for attempted rape. Obviously somebody is trying to frame Richard, who was down studying Lesser Smokey Mountain Trolls to finish up his M.A. degree in biology. "Blue Moon" focuses on Anita as the lupa of the Thronnus Roke Clan lukoi and Nimir-ra of the pard, although her being a necromancer, animator, vampire hunter and human servant all come into play. Her ability, and willingness, to call the munin becomes crucial. Hamilton continues to expand the roster of monsters and their ilk with not only a sorcerer and a psychic this time around, but also a full-fledged demon. The final fight between good and evil in "Blue Moon" is rather anticlimactic, since the most important development in the book happens in the aftermath of the battle.

I think that this was an excellent move on Hamilton's part, because the constant attempts to top the confrontation with evil from the previous novel ends up tampering with the credibility of the story being told. This novel is about Anita's relationships, not with Richard and Jean-Claude, but rather with the supporting cast of Jason, Nathaniel, Zane, Jamil, Cherry, Asher and Damian. "Blue Moon" is not a great novel in the series, but it is certainly above average and whets our appetites for the next adventure. One thing that is absolutely clear now is that the Anita/Richard/Jean-Claude triumvirate is never, ever going to be over. Final warning: while the level of graphic violence has abated a wee bit, the sexuality of these novels escalates greatly from this point on in the series (to the disappointment of many fans). These are novels for adults and I pity the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans that stumble upon this series, misled by the "Vampire Hunter" title which is more of a marketing ploy that an accurate description of our heroine.

Book Description

In his classic study The Masks of God, Joseph Campbell conducted us on a fascinating global tour, showing how the seeds of myth grew in a similar fashion throughout the history of civilization. Before Campbell there was Sir James George Frazier who, in The Golden Bough--his pioneering study of magic, relgion, and folk custom--demonstrated how world mythologies exhibit "the effect of similar causes acting alike on the similar constitution of the human mind in different countries and under different skies." Now, in Beyond the Blue Horizon, eminent astronomer E.C. Krupp guides us expertly through a bewildering maze of cultures and civilizations--from the stone age to the present day--making clear that while the skies of these diverse peoples may vary, they speak nearly the same language. Beyond the Blue Horizon is a treasure trove of myths, legends, and stories in which people have, through the ages, attempted to understand the cosmos and its meaning for humankind. Collecting an astonishing amount of lore between the covers of a single book, Krupp explains why our ancestors were so intrigued by the heavens, and what their celestial stories meant. Readers will learn, for example, that many cultures saw a rabbit--rather than a man--in the moon, and that this moon-rabbit, as a symbol of sacrifice and rebirth, is a cousin of our own Easter Bunny; that to our ancestors, an eclipse challenged the stability and integrity of heaven and thus threatened order and life on earth; that the magical sleighride and chimney antics of Santa Claus echo the ancient journeys of shamans and witch doctors; that our "dog days" of July and August originated in Roman times with the summer appearance of Sirius, the Dog Star; and that the contemporary stories of UFOs reveal the mystery and meaning the sky still holds for us as we approach the twenty-first century. Of course, there is much, much more that will delight and intrigue; even readers familiar with world mythology will find plenty that is new and strange in Krupp's rich panorama. An epic, authoritative, and cross-cultural exploration with over 150 illustrations, Beyond the Blue Horizon tells how all civilizations searched the sky to understand to universe--and our own place in it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Extensive.......2002-07-07

Krupp has written a book that is comparable to Frazer's Golden Bough and Campbell's Hero With a Thousand Faces. He traces the evolution of sky myths from cultures around the globe. Krupp does an excellent job of capturing the meaning and beauty of these stories, and pieces them together in a well-crafted narrative.

5 out of 5 stars Really Facinating Book..........2000-03-28

Beyond the Blue Horizon: Myths and Legends of the Sun, Moon, Stars, and Planets, is a very interesting and amazing read-- it confronts many possibilities of the place outside our blue sky, and gives the reader something to think about for long after the last page is read. Not only is this book worth reading for the pure fun of it, but it teachs you things that may come in handy at dinner table conversation. Facinating is the word that comes to mind... the myths about the stars and planets can sometimes be good bedtime stories, and over all, this book keeps you wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars Characters To Fall In Love With.......2007-03-18

I am a die-hard Luanne Rice fan. I have read every single novel she has written and this one stands out as one of my favorites.

The characters are well-drawn, believable middle class people that have very real, believeable problems that every reader can sympathize with.

Ms. Rice deftly explores the complexities of a busy young family. She is able to capture the love, the heartache and the many questions that struggling young families ask themselves. She expertly handles delicate subject matter in a way that will bring tears to your eyes.

If you like Luanne Rice, you will love these characters.

4 out of 5 stars Fear of the unfamiliar..........2006-12-16

Following a seizure two years earlier, four-year-old Josie Medieros has been left hearing-impaired. Since she was just learning to speak at the time, Josie has never learned to speak properly. She hears only bits and pieces of people's conversations, and regularly flies into rages, frustrated by the fact that people are discussing things she cannot understand.

The strain of caring for Josie begins to show within her parents' marriage. Although Cass and Billy are childhood sweethearts, their problems with their youngest child threaten to overcome their love for one another. Everything was so wonderful with 15-year-old TJ and 13-year-old Belinda, they believe. Then Josie came along and changed everything.

Fearing what they don't know, the Medieroses are adamantly opposed to putting Josie in a special school or allowing her to learn sign language. But after meeting Zach, a young man who specializes in working with children like Josie, they may have to admit that sometimes a person has to let go of the familiar in order to do what's best for their child.

3 out of 5 stars It's Different.......2006-03-29

I liked this book although the writing was a lot different than her other books, but it did have a good story about an extended family and the ties that bind families together and family relationships. I hope that a 1st time Luanne Rice reader doesn't base their opinion of her writing on this book alone, since it is quite different than her usual style. Give her another chance with some of her newer works like Dance With Me or Beach Girls.

4 out of 5 stars Another great book.......2005-08-29

I've been a fan of Luanne Rice for a few years now and
was not dissapointed in this story. Her style was a little
different from other stories she's written, but
still a GREAT READ!!

2 out of 5 stars A must for any Luanne Rice fan but.......2004-03-21

But other then that go for another one of Luanne Rice's books. I enjoyed this one enough, but it was not a favorite of mine. I felt that she jumped around between the charactors quite frequently, never spending enough time with her strongest lead charactor Cass. Sometimes I also felt that the parts where she cut off to what little Josie was thinking were rather odd, and disjointed containing little pertantent information to the story line. Pick up her newest book Dance with Me instead of this one. I guarentee you won't be disappointed.

Book Description

Miniwa, Wisconsin is under siege, but not by the usual summer tourists. The area's normally shy wolf population has begun stalking human prey, and their victims have been disappearing...or worse. Something is happening in the woods. Something brutal and primitive...

Officer Jessie McQuade has seen plenty in her years on the force-but nothing as intriguing as the gorgeous, naked man she encounters while tracking a rogue wolf. Professor Will Cadotte is a Native American activist. He's also the only man capable of distracting Jessie from her work. And for a cop, distraction-no matter how pleasurable-can be deadly. It's against Jessie's better judgment to accept Will's help in her investigation, yet she soon finds herself doing exactly that-and more. Will's dark, penetrating eyes see into a part of Jessie's soul she never knew existed. It's exhilarating...and terrifying.
Now, as a town's deepest secrets come to light, no one is safe: not friends, lovers, or strangers. And as Jessie follows a bloody trail to the shocking truth, she'll have to decide who she can trust when the moon is full...

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-07-17

Passion, action, adventure, this book has it all. It was hard to put down. I highly recomend it if you enjoy supernatural romance.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-06-01

Now this was a book I could really sink my teeth in!!!! VERY different take on the werewolf perspective, but quite enjoyable. The romance in this book was HOT!! I loved the characters, and the storyline caught me almost instantly. A very good read if you like your werewolf novels served up with hot steaming romance...which I do!

4 out of 5 stars How have I missed this author?.......2006-12-13

This was my first time reading a Lori Handeland book. How did I miss this author? I enjoyed this book a great deal. Jessie is a tough, strong, and sarcastic deputy sheriff. Will is scrumptious and the only man who could truly appreciate the wise cracking Jessie. I liked the story and the fact that the obvious people were not the werewolves. This book was easy to read and funny. I will definitley read all of her books in this series. If you haven't read a Lori Handeland book, I recommend you begin.

1 out of 5 stars I didn't get it.......2006-09-15

I prefer werewolf books where they aren't the bad guy but don't mind a good old crazed werewolf killer book either and this really wasn't either of those. The "evil" werewolves didn't seem all that bad to me. Sure they ran around creating other werewolves which may not be nice but its not exaclty evil, for a cermony which if pulled off also didn't seem like a big deal other then everybody else eventually becoming a werewolf. I don't think they actually killed anybody in the whole book and they weren't crazed blood thirsty monsters while in wolf form either. The "good" guys however kill a bunch of people that happen to be werewolves. They never bothered to bring up what was so bad about being a werewolf. You get to live forever unless killed by silver and can turn into a wolf. Yeah that sucks.

5 out of 5 stars Loved the dialog.......2006-07-06

I absolutely loved the dialog in this book. The first person narration by Jessie had me laughing out loud throughout the book. Yes, there is a lot of mystery and some really scary situations but she could always insert a wisecrack or sarcastic comment and lighten the moment. My husband even asked me what I was laughing about as I read the book. These were great characters and you came to care for them. I think I'm usually pretty good at seeing twists in a story but I didn't pick up on the truly evil character until the very end. I'm going to read the other books in this series.

Book Description

Lady Sings the Blues is the fiercely honest, no-holds-barred autobiography of Billie Holiday, the legendary jazz, swing, and standards singing sensation. Taking the reader on a fast-moving journey from Holiday’s rough-and-tumble Baltimore childhood (where she ran errands at a whorehouse in exchange for the chance to listen to Louis Armstrong and Bessie Smith albums), to her emergence on Harlem’s club scene, to sold-out performances with the Count Basie Orchestra and with Artie Shaw and his band, this revelatory memoir is notable for its trenchant observations on the racism that darkened Billie’s life and the heroin addiction that ended it too soon. We are with her during the mesmerizing debut of “Strange Fruit”; with her as she rubs shoulders with the biggest movie stars and musicians of the day (Bob Hope, Lana Turner, Clark Gable, Benny Goodman, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and more); and with her through the scrapes with Jim Crow, spats with Sarah Vaughan, ignominious jailings, and tragic decline. All of this is told in Holiday’s tart, streetwise style and hip patois that makes it read as if it were written yesterday.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I still hear Billie singing, and I just finished the book..............2007-05-14

I have a deep love and respect for some of the most influential female jazz and soul singers of our time, like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, Carmen McRae, Lena Horne, and last but not least, Billie Holiday. In LADY SINGS THE BLUES, Holiday recalls some of the most resonant memories of her turbulent past--the good, the [mostly] bad and the [frequently] ugly. From the very start, Billie Holiday (birth name Eleanora Fagan) born to thirteen year old Sadie Fagan and sixteen year old Clarence Holiday, had a very difficult life. The young girl saw much in the rough streets of Baltimore, Maryland, as a call girl, a jailbird and a spitfire with a vey hot temper.

Billie didn't even consider a career in singing, and her introduction as a vocalist was (perhaps) accidental, but definitely fate. Her descent into drug addiction, jailtime, turbulent relationships (with both men and women) and the great antipathy she faced in the storm of racism, jealousy and gossip made for a very adverse life, on and off of the stage. Some of the greatest moments of her career are documented here, as told to writer William Dufty. We learn the stories behind songs like "Strange Fruit," that are songs she created and truly lived and experienced, before setting them to lyric and melody. Though, I never heard Billie Holiday's speaking voice, I heard it throughout this piece, and I can see why it was brought to the screen, as a film. I haven't seen it, so I honestly have no idea how well it translated as a movie, with Diana Ross. Though, I have heard it was fantastic.

There is also a companion CD, that goes with the memoir, to mark the 50th anniversary of its original release (1956-2006). Perhaps that's why I had to take one star away from the package, as a whole. You really can't read a book like LADY SINGS THE BLUES and then hear other artists covering the songs that Billie really created. There is no comparison, even though musicians like Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds are featured on the album (doing a respectable job of STRANGE FRUIT). It's just not the same. Yet, if the CD was excluded from this 50th anniversary reissue, I would give the book (on its own) five stars, without hesitation. Highly reccomended!

3 out of 5 stars Book---Slightly Boring, Billie--FAR FROM IT!.......2006-10-08

The only thing that saved this book is Billie's personality, which oozes off every page. I found it really hard to get through this book because it doesn't read chronologically---events are thrown all over the place and there are too many people named throughout the book (as if she just wanted to give them a shout-out--so that they could be remembered because she cared about people in that way) but its very difficult to keep up with so many names. It doesn't dig too deep into her drug habit or relationships...and some things are believed to be fictionalized so that the book could sell. Nonetheless, I have to give the book three stars because if anything, it introduced me to Billie. She was sassy, charming, real, and plain beautiful inside and out despite her life experiences. I'm very unfortunate to have not lived in that musical era...when artists truly sang from the heart with passion. I would have loved to meet her. In fact, after reading this novel, I feel like everytime I hear one of her songs, we will have a connection. You don't have to buy this particular book, but you should read up on her and try to listen to some of her music...just to keep her memory alive.
