    Book Description

Here are eleven new Instant Boats to choose from, including three built with a new "Tack and Tape" method that eliminates most of the beveling and results in a very shapely and spritely craft. Flip through the pages and compare the odd, sometimes startling shapes of the patterns with the pleasing sheers and functional good looks of the completed boats. You will begin to appreciate the genius of Bolger. In the opening chapters Dynamite tells you with common sense and uncommon good humor everything you need to know to build one of his boats. You can then start right in cutting readily available plywood sheets to precomputed patterns. (You can build directly from the book, but the purchase of larger-scale plans at a modest cost from Dynamite will make the task of scaling off the patterns easier.) Before you know it you will be fastening them together--all your basic assembly virtually behind you, and years on the water just ahead.

An excellent follow on from the first book with step by step instructions for building.

An easy book to read and follow as you build a boat from the plans included. Gypsy is my favourite

5 out of 5 stars The BEST book for the new boat-builder!.......2006-12-10

This is the first book I ever purchased on boat construction! It deals with plywood construction techniques. Everything you need to know to build a sturdy and useful plywood boat is in here. There is even a brief section in the back illustrating some basic sailing skills.
I bought this book in 1996. I began my first boat project from the plans inside, and soon enough, I built my first sailboat! Sadly, that boat was devoured by Lake Superior during a winter storm a few years ago, but I built more vessels. I have also commenced on the kayak and whaleboat projects featured within. Theres even a plan for a sailboard and a paddleboat. The best project, and the grandest...is a small schooner!
Plywood is the easiest material for the novice boat-builder, from my experience. A well-made plywood boat can be just as durable as a plastic or fiberglass vessel, maybe more! It all depends on your effort. The best thing, is YOU built it! The materials are generally cheap, and you learn a new skill! Thank you for this book Mr. Payson!

This man comes up with so many unique ways to do thing the best way possible. I went out and bought some other books he wrote that are out of date now just because he write them so well. Could I write this well I would have at least a pulitzer or maybe an Oscar. PS I owned several copies of his books that were burned up in a house fire. I just had to have them to read over and over. They stay out on the coffee table. I have yet to see anyone not finish the chapter they are on before they can put the book down to do other things. I have been late more than once.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book for plywood boat building.......2006-02-20

I found this book to be very helpful. It makes boat building accesible to almost anyone. But I wish there were more photos, especially of finished boats. I decided to build the Nymph, the 7' 9" pram design featured in this book. Then I decided I wanted a beamier (wider) boat so I built the wider version of the Nymph, called the Rubens Nymph (Please note: The Rubens Nymph is not featured in this book, only the Nymph is). I did not buy plans, but just widened the bottom and transoms of the Nymph, and used thicker plywood for the frames. So boats can be built from this book without plans, but if I did it again I would get the plans...especially for any of the larger boats.
photos of my finished Rubens Nymph can be seen at: http://pagesofmystery.com/RubensNymphatBlueResevoir.htm

    5 out of 5 stars Essential boatbuilding.......2004-09-03

This is the best book ever written on making small boats for rowing or sailing using modern techniques. If you always figured you would like to build a boat, but were worried about making a success of it, this book, or the others in his series will ensure you get the job done.

Here are three reservations, just so you know:

    1) The building method know as tack and tape is original to the Bolger/Payson duo, and isn't state of the art. Payson prefers working with fiberglass resin rather than epoxy, and those with an E allergy might agree. But for others, this may send you off in the wrong direction. Nonetheless the boats are great as designed, even if they could be better. For instance in epoxy it would be possible to drop the frames and add solid transoms to better carry motors or rudders. That's a better trade.

    2) The designs are a little funky, which is good open thinking throughout, but for instance a person who bought one of these books because they noticed there was a sailboard would probably not be that satisfied, on the other hand it's a great plan to try out a little boarding on.

3)If you just wanted to build one of these boats, many of which are great like Diablo or Nymph, why not just buy the relevant plan?

In this touching and atmospheric novel set among the fishermen of Newfoundland, Proulx tells the story of Quoyle. From all outward appearances, Quoyle has gone through his first 36 years on earth as a big schlump of a loser. He's not attractive, he's not brilliant or witty or talented, and he's not the kind of person who typically assumes the central position in a novel. But Proulx creates a simple and compelling tale of Quoyle's psychological and spiritual growth. Along the way, we get to look in on the maritime beauty of what is probably a disappearing way of life.

    Book Description

When Quoyle's two-timing wife meets her just desserts, he retreats with his two daughters to his ancestral home on the starkly beautiful Newfoundland coast, where a rich cast of local characters and family members all play a part in Quoyle's struggle to reclaim his life. As Quoyle confronts his private demons -- and the unpredictable forces of nature and society -- he begins to see the possibility of love without pain or misery.

A vigorous, darkly comic, and at times magical portrait of the contemporary North American family, The Shipping News shows why Annie Proulx is recognized as one of the most gifted and original writers in America today.

    5 out of 5 stars Want a blow-em up spy-novel, go elsewhere..........2007-08-29

Yes, the book does move a bit slower than the average Michael Crichton... in my mind, this is a good thing.

The slowly weaving lyrical cadence of Proulx's writing came as a nice surprise to me. Her writing would never have passed by my fifth-grade grammar teacher's red-pen; however, her knack for flowing paragraphs weaves a tale that's hard to put down.

The story begins by introducing a slightly dense Quoyle, a 36 year old who you wish would get mad at his surroundings a bit more and make a few changes to better his life. Instead, he seems to take things as they come; in the beginning, the things that come are horrible. A move prompted by an Aunt brings him to his ancestral home in Newfoundland. With the move, he finds a large family house, sitting neglected, along with the small-town preconceptions of his family. Luckily, his local friends put off their judgments. With this new move, he slowly finds himself in better circumstances. Nothing much has changed, many things are still rough, but slowly and surely Quoyle's life is taking an upswing. Finally we see the chance and evolution of a happier life coming to someone who yearned for just that for so long.

Throughout the book the temperament of the sea and the local cadence for life is a character unto itself. Proulx dots her chapters with excerpts of the famous Ashley's Book of Knots, which add a seafaring charm to each.

I was afraid throughout this enjoyable book that Proulx would feel the need to alter the ending to make some serious statements at the closing. I was very happy to find that her statement was made very softly, and with the deft hand of an accomplished writer. There was no "axe dropping" to be had, other than the close of a book-cover that you wished to re-open again very soon.

    5 out of 5 stars Ah, Newfoundland.......2007-08-21

If you've never been there, you'll want to go after reading this book. I bought it as I was getting ready to fly out of St. John's, Newfoundland.

I started reading "Shipping News" sitting in the airport, way ahead of schedule. From page one, I was captivated. The characters are so real; the story could be any tiny town on the coast of Newfoundland (by the way, it is pronounced using the mnemonic "Understand"....same emphasis as on the word "Newfoundland"). Having just recently purchased such a home, I could relate to the characters.

I laughed aloud constantly. Such fun! I am sure all of the fine folks I was sitting with the in the airport thought I was a bit mad. Occasionally, I would look up and I could see the unique personalities I was reading about.

The people of Newfoundland, mostly of Irish descent (with a lilt to their accent), have always had a hard scrabble life. They are a unique breed of human beings, and are portrayed in Shipping News with the respect they deserve. It is a tender, funny and sometimes harsh look at the life of the people who inhabit "The Rock". It is a book that I have read over and over, and give as a gift to my best girlfriends.

I recommend reading the book before watching the movie, but you will find much lacking in the movie, even though it's very well done.

Every time I pick up the book, I yearn to go "home"..............

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Novel.......2007-07-16

This is what writing is all about. A fantastic story constructed in a unique way, far from the mainstream. The characters in the Shipping News are wonderfully rich and far from mundane. The story is full of life and I only wish that there were more books out there that could create such an enjoyable world for me to lose myself in. How anyone could rip on The Shipping News is beyond me. Maybe they can't go beyond the cookie cutter world of best selling authors.

1 out of 5 stars !!!Can't get any worse than this!!!.......2007-04-30

The Shipping news is about an average guy named Quoyle who tries to start a new life in Newfoundland. His two-timing wife died in a car crash and his parents have committed suicide so his aunt comes down to stay with Quoyle and his two lovely young girls. Soon after the aunt, Quoyle and the girls set off to Newfoundland to start a new life. Quoyle gets a job at the local news paper and the aunt sets up an upholstery shop. They both uncover various things about there past and their ancestors. This whole plot line is just way to confusing and not interesting enough. This book is lacking in irony. There are no surprises or any hooks to pull you in. You also don't feel any connection to the characters and it is pointless to read. This book is filled with detail, but it uses such strong vocabulary you forget what is being described in the first place. This book seems to go on forever; the pages just drag on and on. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone!

1 out of 5 stars No word of a lie the boredom will kill you .......2007-04-16

i hattttttted this book. i was on holidays and staying on a remote island, innocently i picked up this book on route and cursed my bad luck for weeks after. Its so slow-moving and mind-numbingly boring you'll actually pray for death. it became my Everest. every agonising page seemed to go on for about a hundred years. Quoyle or whatever he's called is the dullest character in the history of the written word, don't get me started on his daughters and it does nova scotia no favours at all. i have no idea what the author was thinking and have never dared or will never dare read another word she writes. if you're interested yep i finished it and then lit a match and had me a little bonfire!!!!!!!!!!

Whether you own a wooden boat or are just toying with the idea of buying one, Wooden Boat Renovation is an essential addition to your nautical library. Author Jim Trefethen offers clear, detailed advice--in terms a layperson can understand--on how to select, renovate, and maintain a wooden boat. Trefethen's love of these craft is evident throughout the book, and his sense of humor enlivens the text. As one Amazon.com customer says, "A well-made, classic wooden boat is really a piece of art that just happens to float." Wooden Boat Renovation can help you become an artist. --M. Stein

    Book Description

This book is about fixing up old boats made of wood. For many people, a boat isn't a boat unless it's made of wood. The psychological and philosophical reasons for needing to own a boat made from honest trees instead of the material that L. Francis Herreshoff characterized as "frozen snot" needn't concern us. But in this day and age, hard-nosed economics and the ubiquitous bottom line certainly should.

FACT: You can buy a repairable wooden boat and renovate and remodel it for a lot less money than you can buy and renovate a plastic or metal of similar size and condition.

Jim Trefethen has renovated dozens of good old wooden boats, and in this book he's sharing his collected wisdom, craftsmanship, and penury with you. It will supply you with the basic skills you'll need to successfully renovate an old wooden boat--any old wooden boat, from a 16-foot canoe to a 50-foot cruiser, and everything in between--provided the boat actually is repairable (and you'll learn how to determine that, too). After you've read Wooden Boat Renovation, we hope you come away knowing what is possible and how to accomplish it. Then we hope you actually do it.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars thorough, basic, knowledgable, humorous.......2007-10-01

The author is both very well aquainted with wooden boats and very appreciative of them. He does not advocate, as earlier reviews claimed, to simply "fiberglass over" everything. Good chapters on woodworking tools, woods (surprise, mahogany may not be the best overall marine wood!), paints, laminating and time saving ideas to get back in the water. I used several on my 36' 1965 ChrisCraft Challenger. Deals mainly with cruisers, but has a chapter on runabouts.

3 out of 5 stars Great read, but a bit thin in critical areas.......2005-08-18

This is a very entertainingly written book, essential for anyone restoring a wooden boat - worth it as a fun read alone. The book is full of fun wooden boat philosophy, interesting personal anecdotes, and great stories. On the practical side, the author provides a good introduction to wooden boat types and construction, excellent information about selecting, evaluating and purchasing a boat for rennovation; planning and initiating projects; necessary tools and supplies; repairing holes in a wooden hull; and even some tips about building in cabinets and furniture.

The approach is admittedly "quick and dirty," that is, it presents practical, time-saving, and relatively inexpensive ways to get your wooden boat on the water, as opposed to nit-picky and involved pristine restoration techniques. The book isn't for the purist but for the pragmatist, and in that regard the advice and techniques offered are spot-on.

Unfortunately, however, the book is lacking in a few critical areas. Firstly, the section on hull refinishing - sanding, prepping, and painting - is insubstantial and unclear, with numerous contradictions and with no truly applicable examples. This is surprising, since the rest of the book is so comprehensible. (Indeed, ten highly detalied pages are devoted to wooden deck repair.) Also, the use of epoxies and their derivatives gets short shrift, and these days this is a critical area. It's as if here the author is an advocate but not an expert; recommendations about the use of epoxies in hull refinishing are dated and unreliable, and there is no mention of their potential, with fillers, for use in cabin or deck repair. For a book that prides itself on quick and easy alternatives this is an unfortunate omission.

Of course, for any ambitious wooden boat project you'll gather a collection of books, and be sure to add this one, since there is a wealth of good stuff here. Or get it for sure if you're an armchair boat refurbisher. But do look for additional sources if your main interest is hull refinishing or if you anticipate a lot of epoxy filler work.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2005-03-01

I found the book both entertaining and very useful.

The author adds humor as well as knowledge which means you read for the enjoyment as well as the practical skills you will obtain.
The author covers every aspect from searching for a boat , restoring , repairing and the all important how to get a good fininsh on your final product.

Would recommend this book to anyone considering doing restoration work on a wooden boat regardless of size.

Just completed my last restoration project using this book and very satisfied with the results.

3 out of 5 stars Decent info - but proceed with caution........2005-02-25

The previous reviews touch on the good points of this book, so I won't bother to repeat these. Suffice to say, there's plenty of good info to be had from this book. I would however express one word of caution. It has to do with the author's tendancy to push the reader toward approaches and methods that may not be appropriate for boats with truly historic or aesthetic value. Mr. Trefethen makes no bones about the fact that he wants to get the boat back in the water ASAP and minimize maintenance. To use his own words, "authenticity be damned".

A prime example of this attitude shows up when he advises his readers to paint over large portions of the brightwork to minimize upkeep. Of course everyone's entitled to thier opinion, but I consider this advise to be inapproporate for many situations. Once the wood has been painted, it becomes very difficult to return it to it's original glory. This can be a hard mistake to undo.

Many portions of the book seem to be infused with this sort of "quick fix" mentality. Even though he explains himself early on, I still found myself wondering at times why he even wanted to own a wooden boat. If vast expanses of easy-to-clean white are what he's after, why not just buy a Bayliner?

5 out of 5 stars The Best Wooden Boat Book Yet.......2000-08-14

This is the first wooden boat book I purchased and it is still my favorite. I've even reread it a couple of times, something I've never done before. Trefethen's sense of humor and realism make this book a delight to read. His knowledge of the subject and his ability to put his ideas into laymens terms make this book very educational to read. You are able to soak up every piece of information without rereading a paragraph several times scratching your head. Buy This Book!

2005 Author of the Year Award—Working Harbor Committee of New York and New Jersey

2006 AAUP Book, Jacket, and Journal Show in the category of Trade Illustrated Book Design

”Few books can be all things to all people, but this one is an exception. Much more than just a narrow history aimed at tugboat buffs, it has something for everyone. George Matteson, a veteran towboater, has tackled the history of working vessels and has produced a work that is not only poetic and technical, nostalgic and clearheaded, but perceptive of the human and economic dimensions of working on the water. Since towboating in New York reflects the overall course of American industrial, economic, and maritime history, it is a venture into maritime history itself.”
—Steamboat Bill: Journal of the Steamship Society of America

"The seductive promise of the fog-drenched images on the dust jacket of Tugboats of New York is more than fulfilled in the comprehensive contents."
    —Sea History

Tugboats of New York is one of those rare constructions where everything works just about perfectly."
    —Marine News

"Matteson, who has worked on tugs for 20 years, defines the blue-collar boats' place in the history of America's industrial development and provides anecdotes about life in the harbor."
    —Associated Press

"Matteson knows the lore in depth, telling us how tugs work and how crucially they've served the great port."
    —San Diego Tribune

"A magnificent book reflecting first-rate scholarship, writing, design, and production."
    —Woodenboat

"This gem of a book about 'the workhorses of the greatest harbor in the world' was written by someone who himself has operated tugboats since 1979. . . . The book might even be the inspiration for a future tugboat captain.
    —Kivekdale Press

"One of those rare constructions where everything works just about perfectly. The text is insightfully, appreciatively, and masterfully written. The illustrations are informative, handsome, and sometimes—deliberately, one gathers, given some of the credits—quite beautifully artistic."
    —Marine Link

"The informative text and copious illustrations- maps, drawings and photographs- make this book a 'must-have' gift for all the New York nautical devotees....Whether weekend sailor or confirmed landlubber, readers of Tugboats of New York will re-discover the lroe of these iconic craft."
    —Riverdale Press

"Breathtaking photographs. . . . Matteson's fascinating account of the evolutionary era begins with the geographical formation of New York Harbor, but quickly moves to the era of the vessels themselves. . . . Anyone fond of books about the way things work will enjoy Matteson's detailed explanations; others will relish his metaphors."
    —New York Times Book Review

"A handsome account of these durable, powerful, romantic little fellows."
—New York Times Book Review, Editors' Choice

"This sturdy, if little lauded, workhorse of the city's waterways has found a champion in George Matteson, himself a veteran tug operator. His marvelous, handsomely designed Tugboats of New York is both an evocative photo album of tugs at work and a detailed essay on nearly two hundred years of tugboat history.”
    —BookForum

"The story of the development of the tugboat industry in one of the busiest seaports in the world is a remarkable one, and Matteson delivers it in rich and lively detail. . . . The photographs alone, with extensive captioning, make this book worth buying. These photos are gems."
    —WorkBoat

”His book guides you effortlessly into the world of tugboating, showing you the rope(pun intended) with the ease of a master. You can't help but respect him for both his undoubtedly hard-won insider's view of a gritty profession and his spare, pointed, informative prose.”
    —The Waserwoman's Genes

"A brave and jaunty disquisition, copiously illustrated, on the history of tugboats in the port of New York—written with boundless enthusiasm and affection for its subject, and with more than a little longing for the days when ships of all kinds dominated the rhythm of life in and around the city's endless waterways."
    —Ric Burns

"Matteson narrates two hundred years of city history from the decks of its tugboats."
    —The New Yorker

"Not only does George Matteson possess the been-there, done-that experience of actually operating tugboats in New York Harbor, he also has a gift for evocative language. Matteson's tale is literally a page-turner. The book's photographs of tugs, their crews and their machinery, drawn from many sources, are first rate, with many rising to the level of fine art. Matteson's book is a treasure."
—Richard Stepler, South Street Seaport Museum

”Anyone who doubts the beauty or role of the lowly tugboat will be pleasantly surprised by this handsome new book, which charts the development of the waterfront workhorse in New York City...The illustrations, text and personal anecdotes combine to create an engagingly textured work. Matteson's book would make a welcome winter addition to any maritime library— whether owned by a New York City devotee, a photography fan or a tug enthusiast.”
    Mystic Seaport Members Magazine

"Do you like tugboats? Yes, we knew it. Hardworking and cute, what's not to like? Tugboats of New York provides in one elegant volume the whole story for those ready to go beyond a passing crush and learn something about the worker bees of the working harbor which is the reason the city is here to begin with."
    —Crawford Doyle Booksellers

Tugboats are the workhorses of the greatest harbor in the world, easing massive ocean liners and garbage scows alike cleanly into their berths. Tugboats of New York captures the history and lore of these iconic craft, from their precursors in the early 1800s to their heyday in the 1950s, when more than 700 small but potent boats dotted the harbor. They are the most versatile of vessels, not only guiding large oceangoing ships safely into harbor, but also conducting rescue operations and navigating vast quantities of oil, cement, and scrap iron through traffic-clogged waters.

A twenty-year veteran of New York tugboats, George Matteson knows the tides and currents of New York from the Bronx to the Verrazano Narrows. His history of tugboating shows how this inherently risky business pits men and their boats against weather, water, and the scarcely measurable physics of ships and barges of far greater dimension.

The story of New York's tugs parallels the broader history of New York's industrial development, from the rise of railroads to the decline of the port in the wake of labor disputes and large container ships. It is also a story of remarkable seamen who pass their craft from pilot to apprentice over generations, along with the lore of great waterways that remain unchanged despite the lengthening shadows of skyscrapers and commerce.

Rich with first-person anecdotes of life on the New York waterways and one hundred and fifty black-and-white illustrations, including rare and sumptuous photographs from the likes of Gordon Parks and Todd Webb, Tugboats of New York will fascinate readers interested in New York history, boating, and maritime history.

5 out of 5 stars From the wheelhouse.......2007-03-08

Outstanding book, probably the best I ever saw.
I'm a retired Tug captain and pilot [Pearl Harbor & Hampton Roads],but I grew up in NY. The author knows his stuff, I learned things about the industry I didn't know.
If you have any interest in the subject this is a must have book if only for the excellance of the photos.

4 out of 5 stars NY Tugboat History.......2006-09-05

This well written book and its fascinating story brought back many a memory, some good and some not so good, from my time at sea on a salvage tug. The research which the author has obviously done is impressive. The only problem with this book is its dimensions.

5 out of 5 stars Very nostalgic for me!.......2006-03-03

As soon as I'd read the New York Times Book Review of this book, I had to have it. Because I was brought up in the New York metropolitan area I was able to enjoy riding the Staten Island ferry to and from Manhatten to enjoy the sights and sounds of the harbor and the tugs going about their business. I also listened in on a short wave radio to the messages relayed through the New York Marine Operator as the tugboat captains got their orders from their bosses on what barge to pick up, where to take it and so on. This book is delightfully written by someone who certainly knows the towing business and who seems to cover every conceivable aspect without becoming excessive. The photographs chosen are of the highest quality and taken by some of the top names among photographers of that era. Many of them are so good, they are "suitable for framing" as the saying goes. Their rendition in the book are of equally top quality and the captions are full of interesting facts and are not just taken from the text of the book but can stand on their own. Very informative and at the same time, easy to read, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to all, especially to those of us who still carry that little boy or girl inside of us.

I love tugboats and if I get the chance I'm buying one and I'm gonna live on it. This terrific book was a holiday present from my girl friend who knows I want a tug. Did you know tugs are pretty much a NYC invention? - me neither! I do now. Great photos, marvelous history of the NY waterfront.

5 out of 5 stars Two Tugs for One Book.......2005-12-25

This is a beautiful book full of glorious photos and fine illustrations. The text is engagingly written with an insider's knowledge and a craftsman's skill. It breaths life into the history and harbors of New York and makes you want to ride a tug and trade tales with the crew.

    Book Description

The deeds and personalities of famous pirates have received significant attention in recent years: however, no detailed depiction of their vessels has ever been produced. This title redresses the imbalance, conducting a detailed exploration of the wide variety of pirate vessels that sailed the high seas during the 'golden age' of piracy (1690–1730), from gun-bristling warships to smaller craft such as sloops, brigantines and early schooners. It incorporates the latest archaeological evidence to produce a fascinating account of these vessels, detailing their origins, development and tactical engagement. Packed with contemporary illustrations and superbly detailed colour artwork, the ships of the 'golden age' are brought vividly to life.

4 out of 5 stars Well researched and authoritative.......2007-09-25

I found the book to be a solid resource in coming to understand the complex and sometimes contradictory world of marine architecture. The color illistrations were excellent even when the period reproductions were unclear. It was clearly written and easily understandable.

5 out of 5 stars Pirate Ship Review.......2007-01-09

Overall the Pirate ship was excellent and my grandson loves it.

However, in assembly, although relatively easy, the directions were vague. There were mostly pictures and arrows. The installation of the "collapsing mast" caused the most problems. It was unclear how the mast was to fit on the release lever. It turns out that there is a slot that the mast fits into but this is not clearly depicted.

4 out of 5 stars The Life and Times of a Pirate Ship.......2005-09-20

THE PIRATE SHIP 1660-1730 by Angus Konstam is an interesting little book (48 pages total), which has some very nice illustrations of 16th/17th century pirate ships, including a cross-section of the inside of a ship.

What you should expect to find in this book ... Topics include the design, origins, and conversion of pirate ships; small vessels and pirate flagships; and the pirate ship in action. The narration is easy to read and nicely detailed, and of course the main subject of the book is the pirate ship itself. One of my favorite passages was the real-life entry of a pirate-attack survivor, who talked about how his merchant ship engaged in bloody combat with pirates while (shockingly) two other merchant ships looked on, doing nothing to help.

What you won't find in this book ... I knew this book wasn't about the pirates themselves, as there are other books in this series written by this author that exclusively discuss pirates (or buccaneers). What I HAD hoped for, and didn't find, was a discussion about what living in a pirate ship was like (where did they eat, sleep, use the restroom, etc.?). As a side note, the closest I've ever come to seeing what life aboard a pirate ship might have been like was visiting the Vasa Museum in Stockholm, Sweden, which has a restored 17th century warship and includes a display on life inside the ship. It's a neat museum.

Anyway, this was a good little book for those interested in pirate ships. A recent pirate book I read and highly recommend is UNDER THE BLACK FLAG, which was rather entertaining for non-fiction.

    3 out of 5 stars disapointing.......2003-07-28

Hardly worth obtaining. Most of the information in here can be found elsewhere. But makes a good companion for the author's book on pirates by the same publisher.

This wonderful book contains both the best evidence that the sinking of the Titanic was perceived in advance by extrasensory perception, and the best scientific assessment of that ESP evidence.

Exhibit A is the weirdly prescient Morgan Robertson novel published 14 years before the 1912 calamity, The Wreck of the Titan (originally published as Futility). From early-20th-century spiritualist Ella Wheeler Wilcox to modern woo-woo guru Uri Geller, who helped launch a whole Library of the Supernatural series with the strange coincidences in Robertson's book, people have puzzled over how, as Wilcox put it, Robertson managed to "fix on almost the very name which was afterward given to the ill-fated sea monster."

And there are more than 20 startling similarities between the dread tale of the Titan and the real, subsequent Titanic--both ships, for instance, were considered unsinkable, were the biggest ever, grazed an iceberg on the starboard side near midnight on the New York-England line at just over 22 knots, and were owned by a British firm with headquarters in Liverpool and a branch office in New York. On Broadway, to be eerily specific.

Robertson's story, and the story of his life, are interesting, but what makes this book great is the essay that makes sense of it all. The author (and editor of the book) is Martin Gardner, one of the most fun-to-read science writers ever. He is a fellow of CSICOP, the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal, and coauthor of How to Think About Weird Things. (Gardner also urges you to read Michael Shermer's delightfully illuminating Why People Believe Weird Things: Pseudoscience, Superstition, and Other Confusions of Our Time.)

Gardner also includes the short story "From the Old World to the New," by W.T. Stead, a spiritualist, whose story features an iceberg-caused shipwreck on the North Atlantic, a captain named Edward J. Smith, and two lovers-at-first-sight named Rose and Jack (Kate Winslet's and Leo DiCaprio's characters' names in the 1998 film). After writing it, Stead boarded the Titanic, run by Capt. Edward J. Smith, and died in the shipwreck. (Key Twilight Zone music.)

Gardner includes other good stuff: a neat, evocative photo of the Titanic's Veranda Cafe, plus poems anticipating and commemorating the disaster, the best being Arthur Conan Doyle's "Ragtime!":

Ragtime! Ragtime! Keep it going still!
Let them hear the ragtime! Play it with a will...
There's glowing hell beneath us where the shattered boilers roar,
The ship is listing and awash, the boats will hold no more...
Don't forget the time, boys! Eyes upon the score!
Never heed the wavelets sobbing down the floor!

5 out of 5 stars Titanic book rises again.......1998-07-15

The following review was printed in Doubting Thomas #1 (reprinted here with permission):

I am a fan of Gardner's work, especially his 1952 Fads & Fallacies in the Name of Science which helped jump start the skeptical movement. Gardner's wit is always refreshing and the curious reader is never disappointed.

So, it was a great pleasure to see this book being offered again after its initial publication in the mid-80s, not long after the remains of Titanic were found by Dr. Robert Ballard....

I would recommend this book in two ways: to read a good critique on precognition on this specific case, and as a selection of century-old literature that cannot be found in many places.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for rationalists!.......1998-05-26

Martin Gardner, acclaimed rationalist, debunks those who would call Robinson psychic. Some of the "amazing coincidences" regarding "The Wreck of the Titan" may in fact be explained by the White Star Line's own news releases! Gardner includes the Robinson story, plus lots of other related Titanic material. Great book.
