Book Description

From bestselling author Sabrina Jeffries comes the first dazzling novel in a sexy new series featuring three half brothers. Bound together by the royal father who denied them, they've formed a pact to help each other achieve their every desire...including the women of their dreams.

Miss Katherine Merivale is desperate to make a respectable match -- if only her childhood sweetheart would propose! Until he does, she can't touch the fortune she's inherited. So the last thing she needs is notorious rogue Alec Black putting her proposed marriage at risk with his distracting, smoldering gaze and moonlit kisses.

Alec, the Earl of Iversley -- and one of three bastard sons of the Prince of Wales -- is secretly searching for an heiress bride to pay his debts. Fiery Katherine seems the answer to his prayers, and her passionate response to his practiced seduction soon assures him that she is his. But Alec knows Katherine is looking for a love-match, and he wonders...what will happen when she discovers his deception?

4 out of 5 stars A fair balance of steamy romance, moral dilemmas, and witty banter.......2007-08-27

I discovered Jeffries with the School for Heiresses Series; feeling a little lost reading the 2nd book of the Heiress Series to learn that the Royal Brotherhood Series ties into it. Three illegitimate sons of the Prince of Wales meet and decide to aid one another by pooling their resources - their royal father has never aided them in their lives. This story revolves around one of the brothers, Alexander Black, the new Lord Iversley. He has been left with a sprawling, penniless estate and is now in search of a wealthy heiress to marry to save it, and he, from ruin. Directed by his half-brother Gavin Bryne, he begins his pursuit of Katherine Merivale, a unique red-haired & bold beauty who has a rather large dowry courtesy of her late grandfather. The secondary characters are quite entertaining - Katherine's mama's boy childhood "sweetheart" Sydney the poet, and her meddling, pretentious mother. I found the story drags a bit during Alec's & Katherine's "courting", but gets back into the swing without boring. The chapter where Katherine drags Alec to a poetry reading was hilarious. And the chapter when Alec and Kat partake in a daring stage show was unique and entertaining! While the story did have many serious moments too, it kept it at a fair balance of steamy romance, moral dilemmas, and witty banter. A recommended read!

3 out of 5 stars It could have been better for me........2007-07-31

I loved the other books in this trilogy. I was excited to read this one, but was a little disappointed.
I just couldn't get into the book. I could not find myself interested in either of the characters or their plight or anything.
The little tidbit of Sydney was sort of a side-story that didn't really add or detract from the story, but was just..there.

I am going to say read the other 2 stories in this trilogy, they are much better (in my opinion) then this one.

4 out of 5 stars Middling performance from a talented author.......2007-07-04

I got the whole Royal Brotherhood series after having read two of the School for Heiresses series by Ms. Jeffries, because I really enjoyed those two books: Never Seduce a Scoundrel (The School for Heiresses) and Beware a Scot's Revenge (School for Heiresses). I am reluctant to admit that the Royal Brotherhood series pales in comparison to the wonderful writing in the School for Heiresses series. What had really drawn me to Ms. Jeffries' writing is her gift for characterization and humor as exhibited in the Heiress books -- even though, when examined in a cold and objective light, those two books were written around elements as old and worn as the romance genre itself, her characters always felt organic, real, and unique, the narrative and prose flowed smoothly, helped along with a generous dose of wit. Sadly, though the books of the Royal Brotherhood have the same smooth prose and unique characters as the other books, they lacked the wit and humor.

In the grand spectrum of romance novels, the Royal Brotherhood books surely still belong in the top echelons, because they are truly well-crafted stories. Some of the plot or romantic developments didn't feel quite as natural as they did in the Heiress books, but they were still credible and did not feel completely contrived. Ms. Jeffries also injects little unorthodox elements into some of the stories here. For example, this book features a man coming to terms with his homosexuality, and the heroine of Book 2, To Pleasure a Prince (Royal Brotherhood), struggles with dyslexia.

While I would probably recommend reading this series to get the full background stories of characters that appear in the School for Heiresses series (particularly To Pleasure a Prince (Royal Brotherhood), which provides extensive background setting for Only a Duke Will Do (The School for Heiresses)), I would not recommend readers new to Ms. Jeffries to start with this series, as I feel that the School for Heiresses books are a much better display of skill from the talented Ms. Jeffries.

5 out of 5 stars read the entire series.......2007-05-14

Royal Brotherhood Series (RBS)

In the Prince's Bed #1
To Pleasure a Prince #2
One Night with a Prince #3

Read the RBS first because it is loosely tied to School for Heiresses Series (SHS).

Never Seduce a Scoundrel #1
Only a Duke Will Do #2 (Louisa North, Lord Marcus North's sister & Simon, Regina's stupid brother)
The School for Heiresses #3 (anthology, Story #1- Colin Hunt, Duke of Foxmoor's cousin)
Beware of a Scot's Revenge #4 (Lady Venetia Campbell mentioned in one of the RBS)

Jefferies is a high-quality writer that keeps my interest throughout the book and gives me that feeling of wanting to read the next in the series without waiting. I dig that. So far, I have not been disappointed. They are Regency style romances and I like to mix them in with the other genres. And if you're going to read Regency you should totally read Jefferies'.

It's all very relaxing and comfortable. It has romance as well as being appropriately steamy. It is escapism at its best in my opinion. These books are the sort that gives you a nice ahhhhh feeling when you're finished. I can't think of one bad thing to say.

5 out of 5 stars Great..........2007-04-30

I love the character Alec he is great and funny. I thought that this book was funny yet it was also a tear jerker. I loved everything about this book and it was so hard for me to put it down and do the things that I had to do. But even when I wasn't reading it and doing whatever I still noticed that my thoughts kept going back to that book. And then I would smile because it is just a great book. I would recommend this book to anyone.

What to do? The Queen of Trouble (that charming town between Good-Grief! and Who's-to-Blame?) can't seem to catch a single wink, despite countless hours in her Twinkle Room equipped with plush pillows and sheets of silk and velveteen. She's decided that the Royal Mattress just won't do, that it's always either too hard or too soft: "Is it too much to request-- / After all, I am the Queen-- / That I'd like a little rest / On a bed that's... in between?"

The servants mobilize the King, who springs into action: "Good citizens of Trouble, / Will you gather round the moat? / Your Queen's extremely restless-- / I suggest we take a vote!" Every possible solution goes up for review, from a rolling gurney to the Mister Tickle Dream Machine. But it's the sweet, young royal cat keeper who zeroes in on a solution. Isabella Abnormella Pinkerton McPugh enlists the King and his subjects to invent a revolutionary new mattress--the truly Queen-sized waterbed!

The verse of J. Patrick Lewis (Riddle-icious) proves as polished as ever, but it's Kyrsten Brooker's lively collage work that steals the show. Somehow she sneaks in blue T-shirts as moat water, while fabric swatches and architectural samples serve to anchor castle walls and wardrobes. Between Lewis's words and Brooker's spirited cast and composition, every page hums with pep and ingenuity. (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

Book Description

For everyone who loves nonsense verse, a book worth staying up for!

Even a Queen sometimes has trouble getting a good night's sleep -- especially when her mattress is either too hard or too soft. And when the Queen is unhappy, you can bet she makes the King and the citizens of Trouble miserable, too. While the King tries one absurd thing after another in hopes of finding a suitable bed for his hard-to-please Queen -- from the gardener's wheelbarrow to an enormous wicker basket (not too wide, but to too narrow) -- nothing works to solve the problem, not even his Mister Tickle Dream Machine. Finally, a young servant girl, Isabella Abnormella Pinkerton McPugh, steps forth to say what SHE would do: "Queen Angeline might well prefer a bed that's cool and wavy, Like bubble baths or like the seas that float the Royal Navy..." And voila! Thanks to Isabella, the Queen's insomnia is cured once and for all with the invention of -- the Queen-sized waterbed! Flamboyant and funny collages capture all the humor of this rollicking verse by J. Patrick Lewis, whose tongue-in-cheek nonsense has the appeal of the best of Edward Lear and Ogden Nash.

This is just the cutest book that I've had to read to my daughter at least 3 times a day! We love the style of writing that's teamed with precious illustrations. I also like the extended use of vocabulary throughout the story. A favorite!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastical fun.......2000-09-12

A tale told in clever rhyme that lots of fun (especially to read aloud.) But as much as I enjoyed the tale of an incredibly hard-to-please queen, it's the collage of ingenious illustrations that make me giggle. This is the kind of book you read to your kids, then pour over the illustrations after thay have gone to bed! A wonderful book....I can't wait for more.

Described as a mix between Jeffrey Brown and James Kochalka, Liz's comic is made up of short vignettes that capture all the cute, gross, and endearing aspects of relationships.

This is the most adorable set of images I've ever seen in my life. Life is a collection of moments, and this book is filled with moments of character and humor beyond what words are able to describe. It's all so simple, but hits a person somewhere much deeper. In all seriousness, it makes my heart fuzzy.

4 out of 5 stars 2002 update now available.......2002-10-03

I am planning my first trip to Nova Scotia for October 2002 and have been haunting the book stores in Boston for good guides. Near the end of my book search, I came across the 2002 (4th) edition of the Frommer's guide and it has been a regular companion for me as I plan the details of my trip.

Let me make a few things clear here. There are still NO good maps in the book. And there are still NO nice sidebars filled with local tidbits.

But then again, this is NOT that type of book. This Frommer's guide is the nitty-gritty, the essence of what you would want to know for each of the major areas in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. The guide does a good job of giving you information on at least a few places to stay (if there are any in that area), places to eat, tours, and any major landmarks or places to visit in a number of cities and towns, even the smaller ones. And the price range is mostly geared for low-budget to mid-range values. The book is also a smaller size, allowing you to easily carry it around or stash it when you travel. The format is easy to read, and the layout is clean and uncluttered.

I know other reviewers have complained about the guide. To get over these complaints, I suggest augmenting the Frommer's with the official Nova Scotia travel guide (a behemonth, comprehensive thing) that has great photos, maps, and the like; request it for free from the tourism office. (Why would you buy only ONE guidebook for a place you've never been to before?!) There are also some other good guidebooks on the market that will fill in some of the (small) gaps of the Frommer's. And please!--anyone with access to the Internet can easily do web searches for websites that have tons of info on Nova Scotia, including the official Nova Scotia website.

Give it a try. At the very least, if you get it and don't like it, you can return it. I look forward to making my trip and then verifying the info I've gotten from the Frommer's guidebook.

2 out of 5 stars There are much better guides to this region available........2001-10-22

Wayne Curtis has done his homework and his recommendations are the best out in guides today. This is the primary, and only, reason for getting this guide. Otherwise, in all other areas, it falls flat.

There is NO mention of web sites to help travelers gain more information, even with a publication date of 2000. There is only scant reference to web site and email addresses for accommodations. This is an area that has become as essential as physical addresses and phone numbers. By using the net you can view the venue, get real time price quotes and make reservations. The time and significant cost savings is evident and should be in all guides by now.

There is NO information explaining the region's land, ecology, history, government, economy, climate etc. There is NO "recommended reading" section. There are NO 'boxed' vignettes that usually embellish other Guides and explain unique and interesting aspects of the region (and Maritime Canada has a ton of titillating facts and stories).

But, most unbelievable, is that this guide has virtually NO maps! A guide covering five Canadian Provinces that has ten maps of marginal quality (compare to 61 maps in Moon's Atlantic Canada) is woefully sad. A good guide will have a plethora of easy to read maps. A great guide will have city maps that note the location of restaurants and accommodations.

If it were not for Wayne Curtis' "spot on" recommendations I would give this guide a "not Recommenced". But if you choose to purchase it, you will need to supplement it with another quality guide like , Moon's "Atlantic Canada Handbook", then Curtis' recommendations can help. Conditionally recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.........2001-08-08

The guide is very informative on accomendations and restaurants of any price level BUT and this is a huge BUT..the information given doesn't always show up on the LESS THAN CLEAR maps. Some of the towns aren't even on the maps provided and the ONE full color map is more like a road map instead of a detailed one that should have been included. I like the fact that it is informative about Attractions but how do you get there and where are they? Also, needs more information on the parks. I wouldn't buy this book as my only guide but as a appendix for a true tour guide of this gorgeous region.

4 out of 5 stars Needs better maps and ferry info, overall very good........2000-12-07

The strength of this guide is the reviews of accommadations and restaurants, since they include everything from budget to plush. Unfortunately, the information given isn't always represented on the maps. A few times, towns listed next to attractions don't appear on the map! There is ONE full color map, the rest are pink/red and not very detailed. However, I do believe this is the best guide for the region simply because the information is very accurate and the book is well-organized.

4 out of 5 stars maps please!.......2000-06-12

Very informative, readable, portable and current. I particularly appreciated web references which led to a wealth of information I had previously been unable to find . However, I was frustrated in being unable to locate exciting places and trips mentioned in the text on the maps. Often I had no idea at all of the general vicinity of an attraction not to be missed. A more detailed map of Nova Scotia would have made planning our trip much easier. Also there was little information on the provincial parks.

    Product Description

From Publishers Weekly: This first novel in Jeffries's (Married to the Viscount) new Royal Brotherhood series demonstrates that there's still room in the flooded romance market for a traditional Regency told with sparkle and energy. At heart, this is simply a good girl-tames-rake romance, but the chemistry among all the charactersnot just the hero and heroineensures that there's never a dull moment in this merry romp. Determined to make something more of themselves, three of Prince Regent's illegitimate sons come together to pool their resources: Lord Draker's money, Gavin Byrne's connections and Alec, Lord Iversley's, new title. Alec needs a wealthy bride so that he can restore his estate, and beautiful Katherine Merivale may just fit the bill. Katherine has an unspoken "understanding" with her childhood friend Sydney, but she's grown impatient waiting for him to ask for her hand. Seizing the opportunity to get close to Katherine, Alec proposes a plan to make Sydney jealous. Naturally, the two find that they're well-suited, but can Alec hide his scheme from Katherine until they're wed? The attraction between the protagonists is electric, and it's consistently entertaining to watch them juggle their various secrets. Fans of historical romances will find the simple pleasures of this novel irresistible. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

          5 out of 5 stars A hot book.......2003-04-22

When Italian prince Antonio Boniface discovered that Marco, his former valet, was using Antonio's identity and title to get more clients in his new job as a paid escort in Washington DC, he was furious. He immediately came to the U.S. and used his connections to get Marco fired and deported back to Italy.

Being a true gentleman, Antonio goes to the PR firm where Marco had a client waiting to explain that Marco would not be showing up. When Antonio steps into the offices he quickly sees that naïve Maria McPherson is being set up as the brunt of the office jokes by receiving the `prince' as her 25th birthday gift. Antonio's heart immediately goes out to Maria and he decides to put her coworkers in their place by giving Maria a date with a real prince, him. Spending time with Maria soon begins to heal Antonio, who has only been going through the motions of life since his wife died. Feeling more alive in the two days that he's spent with Maria than he had in two years, Antonio comes up with a plan to get Maria to come to Italy to work for him for six months.

Although the two are wildly attracted to each other, Maria is determined to remain a virgin for her wedding night. Antonio promises Maria that he will but help her learn about sex but stop short of taking her virginity. The longer Antonio is around Maria however, the harder it is for him to remain a gentelman and keep his promise. The relationship between Antonio and Maria really sizzles as Antonio tries to do the right thing and fight his attraction for Maria.
