Book Description

Senior FBI agent Nick Pellisante is closing in on the notorious mob boss The Electrician, when the scheduled sting goes spectacularly awry. Two FBI agents are dead, the boss is wounded, and Pellisante vows the Electricians next move will be from a jail cell. Andie Echeverra, a part-time actress and a single, full-time mom, is assigned her next role as Juror #11 in the landmark trial against Mafia Don Dominic Cavello. Everybody is on edge. No one has ever crossed the man whose orders have made entire families disappear. Though Cavellos influence extends across blue uniforms and black robes, the case should be open-and-shut. But the legal system fails with devastating results, and Nick and Andie are the only ones left to seek justice. To stop the Electrician, they must take matters into their own hands. They are the judge and jury now. James Patterson spins an all-out heart-pounding legal thriller that pits two people against the most vicious and powerful mobster since John Gotti.

4 out of 5 stars A different ending than what I thought.........2007-09-15

I never could of imagined the the ending to turn out like that. And no im not giving away the ending,But i dont feel the ending had closure to it.It didnt give the reader a sence of closure.I will give this book a 4 star,it wasnt to bad of a book.It was good clear up untill the end.....Book owl

5 out of 5 stars not bad.......2007-08-12

I am new fan of Patterson, this was a great book! I don't like books that are very scary, like one of the Cross books I read, but this is not like that. Very good story and I enjoyed it very much.

2 out of 5 stars Now what I expected..........2007-07-06

I was very disappointed with Judge & Jury. I like James Patterson books but his writing seems to be getting worse with each book. It mainly seems to be the books that have a "Co-Author" that I find are not written well. And I know that James Patterson can write so much better than this.

So I recently visited the website of Andrew Gross (www.andrewgrossbooks.com), James Patterson's "Co-Author" on Judge & Jury to find out a little more about him. I found a couple interesting bits of information that I thought James Patterson fans might like to know before purchasing another one of his books that have been "Co-Authored". Upon meeting James Patterson, Andrew Gross said that James Patterson had several projects he wanted to write and NOT ENOUGH TIME TO DO THEM. And then Andrew Gross goes on to say that James Patterson comes up with the outline for the book and then passes it on to Andrew Gross. It sounds to me like the only part of James Patterson that is in Judge & Jury (as well as his other "Co-Authored" books, I assume) is that he came up with the story and the outline but the book was written entirely by the "Co-Author". This is definately going to make me think twice about buying another James Patterson book that has "Co-Authors" name on the cover with his. Mr. Patterson, this is a very sad way to let your fans down and lose some along the way. I hope that you go back to writing books on your own.

4 out of 5 stars A Fast-Paced Thriller.......2007-07-04

Judge and Jury is a thriller that starts off and never lets off. This is the story of Nick Pellisante, an FBI agent who has been tracking mob boss Dominic Cavello. At Cavello's niece's wedding, Pellisante arrests Cavello, but loses 2 of his agents.

From here on out, we have a Legal thriller that has you on the edge of your seat the entire time. The one complaint I have about this book was that the final section felt rushed. Maybe it was just me, but this really annoyed me. This was my first Patterson novel. I have read 5 of his novels since then.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-06-25

Not Pattersons best, but defintiely worth your time. It takes about 100 pages for the story to really get going, but once it does, its a good thrill ride that is typical Patterson. I would recommend this to any Patterson fan, or fan of suspense novels. Good beach read. Read it in 2 days on the beach.

Book Description

Coming in January—Richard Jury returns to the back streets and back rooms of London in The New York Times bestselling series

When an old friend pulls Richard Jury into the investigation of a wealthy bachelor's murder, Jury's not sure what's more perplexing: the circumstances of the fellow's death, the conflicted stories of the man's past, or the motivations of the case's lead detective—the beautiful and forbidding Lu Aguilar. What Jury is sure of is that he's in over his head, both with the inscrutable and challenging Aguilar and the false leads surrounding the once-charismatic Billy Maples, last seen in a club named Dust.

A web of clues draws Jury to the trendy Clerkenwell galleries, clubs, and hotels, to the dark stories behind Maples's family, and to the Sussex town of Rye, where Billy had temporarily taken up the tenancy of Lamb House, the charming home where Henry James composed his three masterworks . . . and a place with secrets of its own. With Melrose Plant investigating Lamb House, Aguilar interceding, and the appearance of Maples's mysterious young nephew, Scotland Yard's finest—and now infamous—will need every bit of his intelligence and quiet charm to crack the case.

2 out of 5 stars Lost the Magic.......2007-10-07

Frankly, I was pleased that a number of the reviewers had the same general reaction to "Dust" that I did: disappointment and a a jot of disgust. I have read all of the Inspector Jury novels of Martha Grimes, except for "The Old Wine Shades".

What I like best about the Jury novels is their leisurely pace, the rather quiet, some what tentative inspector with his rather unhappy and unsuccessful attempts at success in love; Melrose Plant -- the star of the novels and his wonderful motley crew of eccentrics and "characters". These books did not hold my interest because of the crime and its solution --- I just wanted to spend some time with the characters -- the murder was just a hook to hang the plot on.

Now, instead of a rustic country pub -- we have a raucus "nightclub". Instead of the somewhat backward Inspector we have a man who is so filled with lust he can't isn't diffident but compulsive.

The reviewer who wrote that Grimes may be losing interest in the novel and the reviewer who said she is trying to appeal to a wider audience ----may be right. If the latter person is correct---Grimes has lost my interest in reading any more Jury tales.

Unless, I hear differently --- I've just crossed any novels to come in this series --- off my personal reading list. That's not to say, I won't pick up one of the earlier ones --- where she still had that magic touch.

2 out of 5 stars Going for a New Audience?.......2007-09-30

I've read most of the Jury mysteries, and I would eagerly await each new installment. I enjoyed the familiar format and the eccentric characters, particularly the Racer-Fiona-Cyril love triangle. I started reading Dust, and all I can say about Jury is, "Who IS this guy?" Have sales been down so significantly that Jury has had to undergo a sexed-up makeover? Sure, sex sells, but does a well-liked, established hero have to become a love stud to generate book revenue? This incarnation of Jury, who must be approaching age 70, is not the fellow I used to know. Maybe Martha Grimes is trying to attract a younger reader base, but she's going to alienate those of us who liked the series before Jury started playing musical beds. The story is somewhat compelling, and the literary allusions are appreciated. However, Grimes has definitely produced stronger work. For me, Dust was, if you will, a one-night stand.

4 out of 5 stars Not disappointed.......2007-08-06

I waited to say anything about any of the Richard Jury series till I have finished it all. That was the quest I set out for myself at the beginning of the year and have now completed.

Admittedly I read the last two books Wine Shades and Dust with a bit of trepidation with all the negative reviews. I am glad to say I disagree-I rather enjoyed both books. Perhaps I enjoyed Wine Shades which I thought was a bit more creative in its approach better.

I am beginning to wonder about some of these mystery writers. Granted a series should follow with some degree of continuity but the last three Grimes novels seem really too connected, especially the last two. What is up with Harry Johnson and Mungo? Is he Jury's Moriarty. I had a problem with David Hewson and his Nic Costa mystery The Lizard's Bite which was a real sequel to Lucifer's Shadow or Elizabeth George's last two. I don't know how good idea it is for a writer to have this kind of serial mentality expecting any reader to be in with the writer every step of the way. For someone just picking up a Grimes book for the first time like Dust-not a good introduction.

I think like Susannah Gregory and her Matthew Bartholomew-it is really not the crime and its solving which is the primary focus. It seems to be a more "getting to know you" reading experience. I do believe as someone mentioned Grimes seems to have Jury in the last two novels experiencing some kind of life realization-a sort of ephiphany to change (and somewhat for Plant regarding his parentage) or alter the direction of is life's direction. Lu probably represents the need for Jury to get some passion in his life-wild unrestraint passion unlike the other "relationships" romantic that came before. Maybe in her next Jury novel ole Dick may actually fall in love-something he does not appear to be able to do.

In other words (and some of the later novels like Winds and Wink have been pretty heavy in topic) she wants to lighten up the stories and the characters. Now she just has to do something with Harry Johnson. And who knows in the end Jury might end up with a dog of his own.

5 out of 5 stars I liked it!.......2007-07-21

I can understand why people didn't like the book. It seems to me that the issue wasn't that the book wasn't well written, it is that Jury...our beloved Jury, is screwing around!! He is cheating on Dr. Nancy!
I really think that upset a lot of folks, I know I didn't like reading about it, not a moral code I have, but more of a "I want Jury to someday find real happiness" wish.
I enjoy Plant and characters other than Jury tremendously, so it doesn't bother me if Jury's plotline takes a break(I actually like Plant better). There are so many interesting inhabitants of Grimes' books to keep one entertained while Jury is off having "fun".
I thought that the book was a good one, and if you become upset when Richard Jury takes off his "perfect man" cape, then you won't like this one....but Jury has taken a break before, most recently in a hospital bed, and fans pounded their fists on the table then.....so here we go again.
The book is a good read, and if you are really into the Jury books , and the other characters, you will enjoy it!

4 out of 5 stars An Excellent Read.......2007-07-11

I've read all of Grimes novels and I was real happy with "Dust". It is an easy read and made an excellent companion for our trip to the beach. I would recommend this book if you enjoy either a mystery.

1 out of 5 stars Laughable.......2007-07-10

I feel sorry for Mr. Patterson, but I've never seen such a poorly written book, full of clichee: the tough FBI agent, the attractive woman that falls in love with him, the evil mafioso.

Nothing new in this book. Nothing. So, why did Mr. Patterson write it? Please excuse me, but quantity never makes out for quality.

4 out of 5 stars The King of Thrillers Strikes Again.......2007-06-09

I like to think of James Patterson's novels as comfort food for the brain. The incredibly short chapters makes reading a breeze and no one writes a thriller as well as he does. His Alex Cross novels are my favorite, but he has shown that he can create fresh, new characters with equal ease.

A mob boss named Dominic Cavello is going to trial for muliple murders and the jury has already been selected. One of the jurors is Andie DeGrasse, a single mother and actress. Andie doesn't want to be on the jury but her attempts to get thrown off fail and she finds her world turned upside down as a scheme to free Cavello and help him escape unfolds. I don't want to say any more and spoil all the fun.

Patterson's books are not the most cerebral reads, but they are fun and easy to get through. As a reader, you can close your eyes and envision the scenes unfolding before you as you turn the pages as a breakneck speed. If you love the typical Patterson book, this one won't disappoint.

1 out of 5 stars Sophomoric and Silly.......2007-05-01

This book is embarrassingly bad. The characters are shallow, the dialog is absolutely laughable, and the plot is hokey in the extreme. I cringed and winced my way through the book, the whole time wondering how on earth such a novel made it past an editor and into print. Truly a disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Good Read.......2007-04-30

A change from the usual JP Thriller however a very intersting read right until the very end. This book brings up a lot of emotion and personal issues with love, grief, loyalty etc which we can all identify at least in part - Very good read would be happy to recommend - i think any reader would get a lot from this book

4 out of 5 stars Change.......2007-04-18

This book is a change from what I normal read and I gobbled it up. I finished the book in two days. The story is captivating about a single mom who is raising her nine year old son while she is struggling with her acting career. She ends up being picked to be on a jury to convict a crime boss for over a dozen years of dirty deeds. This is a story about revenge, true love, and betrayal. A highly recommended read.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I thought .......2007-09-26

I'm reluctant to write this review, since I just read a bunch of negative reviews which were then bashed in the comments, so I'm going to start with this: I do believe Scott Peterson is GUILTY. I believe the jury got the verdict right. I have read numerous other books about Laci and Scott ... including on which was published BEFORE her body was found.

But I did not like this book. Perhaps it's because I really did think they were going to go more indepth in their deliberations, perhaps because they really didn't mention much of the evidence except in passing. I know I was bored to death when they were describing clothing and looks. Part of me has to wonder after reading this if they didn't vote guilty because Geragos didn't come through on his promise to prove Scott "stone cold innocent". Now I'm sure this isn't the case, but by reading the book I sensed that they were waiting for this proof. I would have liked more information on how they deliberated the evidence.

It is not a horrible book for what it is. But it is NOT a book about deliberating the Peterson case. It's a book about 7 out of 12 people and how the trial affected them and their lives (mostly in negative ways).

Now I hope no one feels the need to bash my review just because I didn't enjoy this book. For someone interested in the case I would recommend Catherine Crier's book. For someone interested in Laci's life and the emotions, I recommend For Laci.

It's just my opinion!

4 out of 5 stars Experiencing the Peterson trial through those who lived it.......2007-09-09

Since I'm still reading the book, I can't give a full and accurate review. The four stars reflects my opinon of the book up to this point. So far so good! If you followed this trial, I would recommed this book to read.

4 out of 5 stars We The Jury.......2007-07-18

It was an interesting book and filled in some of the blank spaces in my view of the trial.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant.......2007-06-10

this was an excellent book,i have read about 5 from this tradegy already, it is very interesting to get a different angle on the story.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but not news.......2007-06-02

I found this book an interesting read. However, most of the information in the book was information we already knew due to the previous books published on the case and the intense media coverage. There were a few surprises but for the most part the book covers what anyone following the case would have already known.

1 out of 5 stars Hard to finish...not worth reading .......2007-07-19

I wanted to like this book, but the plot was very disturbing-how can anyone feel positive about a book that endorsed this kind of ending?

Women who can outwit the government in this fashion? Yeah, sure.

Everyone has a BMW? Yeah, right.

They don't get caught when they spy? They always get the info they want? That's realistic...

And what happens to the horses? This book was over-dramatized and the characters were 1-Dimensional. The writing showed promise, but didn't deliver. I won't be reading any other books by this author, sad to say.

4 out of 5 stars Till Justice Do You Part.......2007-06-11

Fern Michaels', "The Jury" doesn't rest on the success of previous additions to the series. The old southern adage: "You wouldn't want to stoop to their level," doesn't help when your only answer is: "You want to bet." Ms. Michaels provides a vicarious experience and keeps her fans coming back for more.
Nikki is suffering from guilt, even though she brought the members of the Sisterhood to her adoptive mother's attention; she feels the strain of an outsider. Now, her name has been chosen for the next revenge. Nikki believes her membership in the close knit group is under false pretenses as she has reunited with her life's partner without telling her friends. Taking a vacation, Nikki leaves her law firm in the hands of Allison Bank, a replacement for her beloved childhood companion.
Allison betrays her employer for a chance at the big time, and the Sisterhood convenes. In the meantime, Paula Woodley, a Washington wife, is almost beaten to death by her husband. Now Nikki mission becomes twofold, defeat Allison and regain her life's work and help Paula Woodley put an end to the torture she has endured during her marriage.

2 out of 5 stars where's the ending???.......2007-10-02

While I am a big Grimes fan (love the Richard Jury series, and have read them all), I actually found this book to be rather a frustration. You see, the beginning really pulls the reader in--there's this fantastic tale Jury is told at a pub, and the story is rather a brain teaser. Well, and the intensity just builds from there...keeps you guessing the whole time...you stick through page after page of suspenseful dialogue between the characters (sometimes it feels like the characters are talking in circles around the plot)...takes you through all of this, only to drop you right after that. Yes, that's right...the book just drops off. Doesn't really give you much of an ending, which is frustrating to no end, since this book is really a story within a story. Rather a disappointment to have stuck with it through over 41 chapters, and then have it just fizzle out. Quite unsatisfying, that.

"Man walked into a pub..."

(Bah humbug to that! Where's the ending???)

1 out of 5 stars The worst book I've ever read.......2007-08-15

Airport book is inconsistent and mind-numbing right out of the gate (where were this woman's editors??), careens downhill from there. Just terrible.

3 out of 5 stars Personally, I liked the dog.......2007-08-03

I have to admit that I was disappointed in the ending, although I didn't have any trouble understanding it. There were some errors and, to be sure, some of the book bordered on fantasy, but I liked it, and I thought the dog and his feline housemate were a lot of fun. Of course, I enjoy Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie and the Cat Who series etc, also. I would have liked to see more resolution to the book, and I was a little skeptical that there was no way of solving the case. After all, these kids were no dummies and could have easily provided more aid to Jury. I will read the next one when I come across it, but I don't see me rushing to buy it.

4 out of 5 stars not a bad outing.......2007-07-12

I have read all Ms Grimes' books, not so much because they are fabulous but because once I start reading a series, it's hard to quit it. Well, okay, there's also the wonderful Melrose Plant and his Aunt Agatha... The last several installments of this series, with the notable exception of The Winds of Change, have been either mind-numbingly confusing or crushingly depressing (too many dead children!) and sometimes, both. But Old Wine Shades is more playful than depressing. So I'd recommend it if you like her work and/or like a puzzle. If you have never read her before, I'd recommend a trip to the library to read up on the series starting with the first book, because otherwise, you won't know what the heck is going on...as I said, it's confusing and each book reads more like a chapter in the saga than a standalone story. IMHO, of course.

1 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2007-06-13

A decent beginning and plot development then left to plod through a poor structure and no ending. I'm not kidding. There was no ending.

Book Description

In this new, third edition of Theater Tips and Strategies for Jury Trials, David Ball updates his methods and approaches to jury persuasion. This practical step-by-step guide helps you navigate the changes that occur in jury trials instead of being blindsided by them.

Based on both research and the experience of lawyers and trial consultants across the country, Theater Tips and Strategies for Jury Trials, Third Edition, presents techniques of the stage and screen you can use to win in the courtroom. Ball tells how to use theater concepts to persuade and motivate jurors. He tells attorneys how to look, talk, and act naturally, and to communicate the truth clearly and memorably, so they gain trust and credibility from judges and jurors.

Ball provides practical guidance for voir dire, openings and closings, testimony, and focus groups. He describes what practitioners can learn from actors about their manner, voice projection, and behavior. He explains how to grab the jury from the beginning--just as a good movie opening captures the audience. He details how to prepare your "cast" of witnesses so they testify clearly, credibly, and memorably. He offers advice on telling the story so that it commands attention and motivates jurors to argue for your side.

5 out of 5 stars A Necessary Tool for the Trial Lawyer.......2003-10-15

Professor Ball uses his special skill in Theater Arts and perceptions of jury reaction to instruct the advocate in trial techniques.
I often refer to this book in CLE presentations along with Wellman's work on Cross Examination.

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully Drawn.......2007-06-15

I found this book to be beautifully rendered with with many drawings of examples face types, features and body language gestures that were clear and easy to understand. But the descriptions were very general and didn't cover all of the variations that exist in reality. (I suppose one is supposed to take one of the authors face reading classes for more info. listed in the back of the book.) Still, it was a facinating read, and a fun topic to try among friends.

1 out of 5 stars Phrenology for the '90s.......2007-02-01

If you wish learn to identify people's personalities or how they may be feeling or may be thinking at a given moment then his book is a waste of your time and money. The ideas in this book are nothing but pseudoscientific nonsense. The text is full of glittering generalities and vague statements which nearly anyone would agree were true about them, regardless of face shape. If you wish to truly read people, your time and money would be much better spent on just about anything by Paul Ekman or any of the books by Desmond Morris on human social interaction. Avoid this book.

1 out of 5 stars save your money!.......2006-12-13

I am a trial lawyer with 26 yrs experience. this book is a joke. there is no science to back up his opinions, which are about as "scientific" as reading chicken guts. It's basically a rehash of the "science" of divining character from the shape of peoples skulls.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-03-19

I had the immense pleasure of having my face read today by Mr. Fulfer, and very accurately, too. If his book can teach people even a tenth of his skill, then it is valuable indeed. I plan to read my copy very carefully.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reference book; Check out Rose Rosetree, too.......2003-12-30

What I like the most about Mr. Fulfer's reference book is that the information is well organized, so it is quick and easy to find the data on, say, a nose which has a bump in the middle and large square nostrils.

I have also read Rose Rosetree's "Wrinkles are God's Makeup," which focuses on personality changes which out-picture on the face over time. It is a fascinating book, though not quite as well organized as "Amazing Face Reading."

2 out of 5 stars Formulaic, predictable and ridiculous.......2007-05-25

This is a pretty bad thriller, it is formulaic, predictable and ridiculous. The characters are one dimensional and totally unoriginal. Although there were a few entertaining sequences, the book is not worth buying as there are far far better examples of the genre out there.

1 out of 5 stars No talent chimp could do better.......2007-01-30

As an editor, I read a lot and this book is the worst item I've read in the last several years. How am I to get my precious four hours of time back? I want my $29 back and a promise from Patterson to find another job. If this is thought to be 'good writing' then we are doomed.

5 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE PATTERSON BOOK SO FAR.......2006-12-26

I just finished reading this book. This is my third James Patterson book. I love this one as well as Four Blind Mice and the 3rd Degree. I loved the story and the characters are intriguing. You could really get into one of these books and cannot put it down. You could spend the hours reading these great books. His books are easy to follow and are real page turners. This one is my favorite so far. I can't wait to start reading more of this man's books. ANOTHER GREAT READ BY MR PATTERSON.
