Book Description
For nearly two decades, since the publication of her iconic first novel, The Good Mother, Sue Miller has distinguished herself as one of our most elegant and widely celebrated chroniclers of family life, with a singular gift for laying bare the interior lives of her characters. In each of her novels, Miller has written with exquisite precision about the experience of grace in daily life–the sudden, epiphanic recognition of the extraordinary amid the ordinary–as well as the sharp and unexpected motions of the human heart away from it, toward an unruly netherworld of upheaval and desire. But never before have Miller’s powers been keener or more transfixing than they are in Lost in the Forest, a novel set in the vineyards of Northern California that tells the story of a young girl who, in the wake of a tragic accident, seeks solace in a damaging love affair with a much older man.
Eva, a divorced and happily remarried mother of three, runs a small bookstore in a town north of San Francisco. When her second husband, John, is killed in a car accident, her family’s fragile peace is once again overtaken by loss. Emily, the eldest, must grapple with newfound independence and responsibility. Theo, the youngest, can only begin to fathom his father’s death. But for Daisy, the middle child, John’s absence opens up a world of bewilderment, exposing her at the onset of adolescence to the chaos and instability that hover just beyond the safety of parental love. In her sorrow, Daisy embarks on a harrowing sexual odyssey, a journey that will cast her even farther out onto the harsh promontory of adulthood and lost hope.
With astonishing sensuality and immediacy, Lost in the Forest moves through the most intimate realms of domestic life, from grief and sex to adolescence and marriage. It is a stunning, kaleidoscopic evocation of a family in crisis, written with delicacy and masterful care. For her lifelong fans and those just discovering Sue Miller for the first time, here is a rich and gorgeously layered tale of a family breaking apart and coming back together again: Sue Miller at her inimitable best.

Customer Reviews:
Pulled in two different directions.......2007-09-04
If you can get past one of the more disturbing storylines (a 15-year-old girl entering into an affair with an older man, who happens to be a family friend), then this novel is such a fascinating study of people and their motives. There are so many circumstances that change our entire lives as well as those around us. Here we have divorce, remarriage, death, emotional distancing and sexual awakening as some of the topics explored so wonderfully by Miller's skillful writing. Keep an open mind, and you will be treated to a hauntingly provocative book.
Not what was expected.......2007-03-23
I have loved most of Sue Miller's past books. They provide entertainment and quality character development. While the setting in this book was interesting, the plot was lacking. I thought I would be reading about a coming of age girl, yet this tended to be about sexual abuse. I found it disturbing especially because there was not enough information provided to find any sympathy for the characters. This book did not live up to my expectations.
Daisy and Duncan.......2006-11-25
Regarding Mark's discovery of his 15 yr. old daughter's relationship with a 53 year old man:
Yes, the relationship is repulsive and hard to read about. We are forced to open our eyes to something that we know as a society does happen: many atrractive young girls do become the objects of older mens' fantasies and sexual attentions. We know wihtout even thiking about it that the typical response would be that most fathers blow up and reject their daughters in response to having knowledge of such acts.
Although Miller makes Mark's response different, it is not unrealistic in the context of the rest of the storyline. Mark's response is inextricably linked to his ongoing relationship with Eva. As both Emily and Daisy state toward the end of the book, the children's lives were shaped/marred by their "exclusion" from the intimacy that their parents shared. Because Mark still loved her, his first instincts would have been to protect EVA from the knowledge of what happened to their daughter. He knew fully that with all Eva had lost and suffered that this would crush her.
Fortunately for Daisy, over the years, Mark had come to realize his culpability in being an absent father while married, his replacement by John in both Eva's and Daisy's hearts, and even after the loss of his "replacement" through the death of Daisy's step-father. Daisy would not continue to be lost to him, however; she called out to him by crying in the night -- a few days later, he heard her cry in a different way and came to her aid becoming the father she desperately wanted and needed.
Young girls like Daisy do reach out to older/other men when their fathers are absent or have died. The men they find available to them may have other objectives, yet seem to fill a void and shape too many young girls lives. I think Sue Miller successfully addressed a very thorny subject on so many levels that a second reading would intensify an understanding of the strength of her words and message to us as a society.
It Is Not Pedophilia.......2006-11-20
Sue Miller's Lost In The Forest is the story of a family coping with the sudden accidental death of a beloved stepfather/father. The family consists of the widow Eva, teenage stepdaughters Emily and Daisy, small son Theo, and Eva's first husband Mark. The storyline predominantly follows the lives of Daisy and Mark and their dysfunctional relationship and, eventually, tenuous reconciliation. The characters are believable and the book is a quick read at 247 pages. This is an enjoyable examination of family dynamics and highly reccomended. Many other reviewers have commented on the May-December affair of Daisy and family friend Duncan. There are many aspects of this relationship to disgust the reader. Duncan is a self-absorbed adulterous creep who preys on a young woman's vulnerabilities for his own sexual satisfaction with no regard for her well being. But this is not pedophilia. Daisy is not a pre-pubescent child. She is physically developed and therefore, by definition, her sexual involvement with the 53 year old Duncan is not pedophilia. To be sure, it is poor judgement by a man with no regard for his marriage vows and in no way should be condoned. But the fact that Daisy's father Mark, upon learning of the affair, does absolutely nothing is much more disturbing than the natural attraction of a man for a pretty young woman. If she were my daughter, I would personally see to it that Duncan spend the rest of his life as a eunuch.
Lost in the Forest.......2006-11-11
I loved this book, as I do all of Sue Miller's books. This is esentially a WWII story, and the era is provocatively drawn. I've loaned it to 2 friends who've also loved it.

Lost in the Woods.......2007-09-20
The story line is simple but powerful--suitable for many ages. The pictures are absolutely gorgeous. I would love to look through my camera and catch these images. I ordered one for my grandchildren, and now I have ordered a second one for the other grandchildren. I loved it!! At the back are some hidden pictures to find after the story has been enjoyed, and they were challenging to find. I wish every kid could have this book in his/her library.

The Essential J.R.R. Tolkien Sourcebook: A Fan's Guide to Middle-earth and Beyond
ASIN: 1587420198 |
Book Description
Here is the book that Tolkien fans have needed for half a century--a detailed, book-length chronology of J. R. R. Tolkien's complex tale. Whether you are a serious Tolkien fan or simply someone who enjoys reading the story over and over again, this is the book for you. It's the first totally new reference for The Lord of the Rings since the 1970s.
Beginning over 1400 years before the major events in Tolkien's epic, it describes, year-by-year, the amazing and imaginative background history that Tolkien created for his masterpiece. Then for the main narrative, it becomes a day-by-day reference, describing what each character does on that day and all the places where those events are described in Tolkien's writings. You can find out, for instance, what Merry and Pippin are doing as Sam perpares rabbit stew on the morning of March 7.
Probe deeper into Tolkien. See why someone as serious as Gandalf was interested in fun-loving Hobbits. Discover an exciting new plot, based on Tolkien's notes, that begins when Aragorn captures Gollum. Follow along as the Black Riders and Gandalf race for the Shire. Decide for yourself whether Sauron and the Ring have any ties to Hitler and Stalin. Explore what Tolkien believed about nature and technology.
A few facts illustrate how helpful this chronology is. Most of narrative is a deliberately confusing sea of next days and third days that leave readers as confused as the tale's main characters. The middle 60 percent of The Lord of the Rings gives the current date only once. In the narrative as a whole, the date is given only 23 times, or once for every 43 pages, and most of those come when the plot is moving slowly. That's why those who want to dig deeper and understand better what Tolkien was saying will find this book a must-have.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2006-12-10
Perry has done a wonderful job in untangling the very intricate tale woven by J.R.R. Tolkien. Of particular help are the copious margin notes which reference exactly where Perry is drawing the information contained within that section of his book. The commentary made by the author is a welcomed pause for reflection on the events that are taking place and keep the book from being a mere listing of dates and events. I teach a course on J.R.R. Tolkien and have found Untangling Tolkien a valuable resource, since it covers the entire history of Middle-earth: what comes before The Hobbit and what takes place after The Lord of The Rings. Bravo Mr. Perry, I look forward to reading your other books.
Knits up the ravels.......2004-10-31
An amazing accomplishment by a dedicated Tolkien fan.
That is how I'd sum up the book Untanging Tolkien. Michael Perry has first unraveled all Tolkien's "dates" -- which can be extrapolated from phases of the moon -- and then knit them together again in a cohesive outline, presented in much greater detail than Tolkien's own timeline (found buried in Appendix A of LOTR). By incorporating information from other Tolkien writings, the author of Untangling Tolkien collates additional facts about all the characters and the circumstances surrounding the War of the Ring, folding them all into this detailed chronology. He includes material that sheds light on possible parallels between Tolkien's work and events that were contemporary, and he provides original commentary that suggests some additional motivations for Tolkien's characters. Sidebars offer references to every source for the information presented and for each conclusion the author has drawn.
I found the format, with quick-reference bulleted lists and clearly delineated sections and subheadings, well-organized and easy to use.
NOTE: I read the third printing that was published in May 2004. Apparently the author has corrected many of the errors that David Bratman objected to (below). You won't find a better overview or a more throrough treatment of time and dates in LOTR than Perry provides in this book.
A Radiograph of LotR........2003-12-27
This book is layed out as a chronological record of the events covered by Tolkein's masterpiece with prefaces that explain the calender system created by Tolkein and its conversion to our more mundane (and possibly inferior) system. The type is clear, and margin citations clear and present for every entry. It's primary utility, at which it succeeds admirably, is as a kind of radiograph of Tolkein's work that reveals its astonishing complexity more clearly and allows one to admire, and more importantly, explore the book itself more quickly, easily, and deeply.
The book also contains copious notes inline with the chronology. These vary from informative to tangential, but at worst do not detract from the book's primary function. Mr. Perry is perhaps foremost as Lewis scholar, and so C.S. Lewis, a close acquaintance and friend of Tolkein, makes a number of appearances. Also making appearances in the notes are William Shakespeare and Winston Churchill.
All in all, a unique book which will save anyone who wants to do an in depth study of LotR a lot of time.
Splendid Tolkien Reference Work.......2003-12-21
Superb, exhaustive chronology of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings saga. Perry does a superior job in untangling a number of thorny chronological issues in Tolkien's narrative, and he employs some fine literary detective work in reconstructing what events are happening across Middle Earth on any given date. Especially admirable is his reconstruction of how much moonlight there was during each day of Frodo and Sam's journey into Mordor.
In addition to chronology, Perry supplies a lot of background information about Tolkien's themes and sources, as well as biographical tidbits about Tolkien. For example, there are fascinating discussions of Tolkien's views of technology, freedom, and totalitarianism. Perry also discusses Tolkien's stance toward the misuse of Germanic myths by the Nazis.
This is a great resource for Tolkien-lovers everywhere.
a giant mass of undifferentiated trivia.......2003-12-21
A year-by-year, later day-by-day, chronicle of the war against Sauron from the founding of the Shire to the glorious conclusion seems at the outset like a good idea. Perry calls LOTR's Appendix B, the Tale of Years, "far from complete" but it covers the whole period: what he means is that it's not detailed enough for him. Appendix B won't tell you which day Sam cooked coney for Frodo; Perry will.
But alas, the book does not stop there. The entries are written as bullet lists like a PowerPoint presentation, and many add pointless little flowcharts such as two-generation family trees. They reduce Tolkien's magnificently complex subcreation into a giant mass of undifferentiated trivia. And each yearly or daily entry comes with its commentary, whether directly relevant, side points, broader considerations, or dogmatic essays in applicability. The unrelieved banality and inappropriateness of these must be read to be believed; as also the author's clumsy, grammatically inept style, and his smug superiority to the characters. (He frequently criticizes the good guys' "blunders," all of them more complex than he implies.)
There's actually some good chronological analysis and speculation hiding in here. But how can someone who knows his Tolkien that well say that the wizards were Valar, or that Rohan gave Isengard to Saruman (it wasn't theirs to give, and Saruman was made its warden, not a freeholder), that Boromir and Faramir had a sibling rivalry (Tolkien specifically says not), or suggest that Galadriel should have sent daily eagles to check up on the Fellowship?
These are not isolated examples: the bloopers and misconceived ideas go on and on. The whole book is like that: it has the soul of a PowerPoint presentation. I can't recommend it on any terms.

When a forest fire threatens a nearby stable, Stella locks Rufus safely in the kitchen and rushes to rescue the horses. The fire grows nearer. Everyone must be evacuated from the valley. Stella helps her veterinarian aunt care for a singed raccoon, a kitten with a burned foot, and an abused grizzly bear cub. But Rufus is all alone--is he in danger from the fire?
Customer Reviews:
Good!.......2002-01-27
I really liked this book, but it should be called 'Found Puppy.' In the beginning, Stella helps some horses out of a burning barn. Then, Stella isn't allowed to get her puppy out of her house when she evacuates. At her aunt's animal clinic, Stella finds a kitten. Stella falls in love with the kitten, but is very worried about her puppy.
Good book.......2001-07-14
There's a fire in Stella's town and everybody has to be evacuated. Unfortunately Stella finds a little kitten who's burned her foot, and Stella's own dog, Rufus, is locked in the kitchen at her house. Will Stella be able to help all of the animals, including her own?

A Must-Read Bedtime Story with a permanent bookshelf space.......1999-11-15
This book has become one of my 7-year old daughter's favorites, and I never tire of reading it to her, as I was the one who was initially captivated by the enchanting story line and possibly some of the most beautiful illustrations I have ever seen in any book. Its theme is gentle and sweet (albeit very idealistic; I wish every youngster who wandered into the woods alone could encounter such a happy ending); your child will find something new in the incredible illustrations with every reading for a long time!A knockout and must-read!
Beautiful.......1998-11-29
This sweet and gentle story is told gracefully and lushly illustrated. Our 5-year-old loved it, and we loved reading it to her.
Intellectually provocative for young minds.......1998-04-01
This book became my son's bed-time favorite because of the subtle interaction between text and illustration which provoked interesting questions and discussion about animals, child rearing, social relations, environment, agency, etc. --- so much so, that after having outgrown it, he reserves a special place for it on his bookshelves.
A great story with spectacular illustrations.......1997-08-11
If you get this book for your child, expect to be reading it every night for the next six months. My 20-month old daughter demands "Owl story" every night. Even after a hundred readings, we are still discovering new detalis in the illustrations. From a moose hiding in the background to a fairy on a leaf, this book contains more detail than any other children's book I've stumbled across
