Book Description

A shocking murder shatters the picturesque calm of Pennsylvania's Amish country -- and tests the heart and soul of the lawyer who steps in to defend the young woman at the center of the storm....

Plain Truth

The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: circumstantial evidence suggests that eighteen-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big-city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide -- and, for the first time in her high-profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own. Delving deep inside the world of those who live "plain," Ellie must find a way to reach Katie on her terms. And as she unravels a tangled murder case, Ellie also looks deep within -- to confront her own fears and desires when a man from her past reenters her life.

Moving seamlessly from psychological drama to courtroom suspense, Plain Truth is a fascinating portrait of Amish life -- and a moving exploration of the bonds of love, friendship, and the heart's most complex choices.

Moving seamlessly from psychological drama to courtroom suspense, Plain Truth is a triumph of contemporary storytelling. Jodi Picoult presents a fascinating portrait of Amish life rarely witnessed by those outside the faith -- and discovers a place where circumstances are not always what they seem, where love meets lies, and where relationships grow so strong they can transcend death.

When Ellie Hathaway decides to defend Katie Fisher against the charge of murder, the urban-savvy D.A. finds herself caught in a clash of cultures with a people whose channels of justice are markedly different from her own. Plain Truth is the extraordinary story of two unforgettable women -- and what happens when their disparate worlds collide.

I loved this book. I'm not someone who sits down and reads books. However, this one kept my attention and was phenominal! I plan to read all of Jodi Piccoult's books. I definately recommend this book!!

5 out of 5 stars Keeps you guessing right until the end.......2007-10-02

I thought this book was outstanding. Being from Pennsylvania, I found it very interesting to dive more into the "Plain" way of life. I enjoyed the story itself and the focus on the Amish Culture. It was a page turner, without a doubt. I wasn't able to put it down after the first page. Definately would reccomend this book.

4 out of 5 stars The Plain Truth is Difficult to Come By.......2007-10-02

This story opens with the discovery of the body of a newborn baby on an Amish farm. The rest of the book deals with the struggle for the truth.

Although it had been proven that young Kate had just given birth, she denied ever having been pregnant, let alone having ever given birth. Little by little, she admits to remembering more and more circumstances linking her as the mother of the baby.

Meanwhile, defense attorney, Ellie Hathaway, learns truths about herself. Forced to stay on the Amish farm in order to maintain custody of her client, she is compelled to face a totally different lifestyle and a set of values that is much different than her own.

Interesting characters and a fascinating glimpse into the Amish way of life, make this book irresistible. The ending has a unique and unexpected twist which readers are sure to love. This novel obliges the reader to contemplate the meaning and value of truth.

5 out of 5 stars Great Page-Turner - Couldn't Put it Down!!!.......2007-09-30

Another great book by Jodi Picoult. I love reading about the Amish culture and the court case had me on the edge of my seat. Great characterisations throughout. Definitely worth reading!!

4 out of 5 stars An Intriguing read that will keep you guessing........2007-09-28

In "Plain Truth" I found it very interesting to learn about the Amish, life style, religion, and beliefs. Though the setting is in a pastoral peaceful world of the Amish, the story is still riveting as ever. Again, Jodi Picoult kept be wondering as she developed all the characters. The characters seemed very familiar as I read the story and I felt a kinship with them. This read offers so much; romance, murder, courtroom drama, and so much more. All through the book I kept changing my mind on what actually happened to the baby, but never once did I guess what the ending would be. Overall, the book was an excellent, plus I was able to get a peek into the Amish culture which I found very intriguing.

Book Description

Howard Lyman's testimony on The Oprah Winfrey Show revealed the deadly impact of the livestock industry on our well-being. It not only led to Oprah's declaration that she'd never eat a burger again, it sent shock waves through a concerned and vulnerable public.

A fourth-generation Montana rancher, Lyman investigated the use of chemicals in agriculture after developing a spinal tumor that nearly paralyzed him. Now a vegetarian, he blasts through the propaganda of beef and dairy interests -- and the government agencies that protect them -- to expose an animal-based diet as the primary cause of cancer, heart disease, and obesity in this country. He warns that the livestock industry is repeating the mistakes that led to Mad Cow disease in England while simultaneously causing serious damage to the environment.

Persuasive, straightforward, and full of the down-home good humor and optimism of a son of the soil, Mad Cowboy is both an inspirational story of personal transformation and a convincing call to action for a plant-based diet -- for the good of the planet and the health of us all.

Download Description

When former cattle rancher Howard Lyman appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 1996 to share his insider view of the danger of Mad Cow Disease spreading to this country, his revelations about the beef industry prompted a group of Texas cattlemen to file a lawsuit charging Lyman and the talk show host with "food disparagement". That wasn't enough to silence Howard Lyman, and in this stirring account of his journey from meat-loving cowboy to vegetarian environmental activist, he tells the whole truth about the catastrophic consequences of an animal-based diet. Lyman is well aware of what goes into our livestock-- high doses of pesticides, growth hormone, and the ground-up remains of other animals. A fourth-generation Montana farmer, he regularly doused his cattle and soil with chemicals. It was only when he narrowly escaped paralysis from a spinal tumor that Lyman began to question his vocation and the effect it was having on people and on the land he loved. The questions he raised and the answers he found led him, surprisingly, to adopt a vegetarian diet. As a result, he lost 130 pounds and lowered his cholesterol by more than 150 points. He is now one of America's leading spokesmen for vegetarianism. Along the way, Lyman learned even more about the alarming dangers associated with eating meat. Here he blasts through the propaganda of the beef and dairy industries (and the government agencies that often protect them) and exposes an animal-based diet as the primary cause of cancer, heart disease, and obesity in this country. In a powerful and original voice, he warns that our livestock industry has repeated the mistakes that led to Mad Cow Disease in England while it simultaneously visits frightful, lasting damage on our environment. Persuasive, straightforward, and full of the down-home good humor and optimism of a son of the soil, "Mad Cowboy" is both an inspirational story of personal transformation and a convincing call to action for a plant-based diet.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book!.......2007-08-13

Don't read it unless you're ready to give up eating animals! It's an easy to read, informative look at the dark side of the meat eating US culture and the effects upon our bodies as well as the environment. I would highly recommend it for anyone who is already vegetarian or thinking about becoming one, or for anyone concerned about our environment.

4 out of 5 stars very interesting and educational.......2007-06-28

While overly emotional and more than a little biased at times, I found this book a very interesting read. It makes you look differently at the environmental and sociological as well as medical impact of our society's increasing use of beef. I think this book has a lot of information that people should be told, but that doesn't make it into most mass-media

5 out of 5 stars THE book for vegetarians to argue their case.......2007-06-19

Vegetarians I encounter are of two types. Cultural Veggies like me who grew up in vegetarian households. Then Veggies by choice, who deserve greater respect for following their convictions. Howard Lyman deserves the highest respect for his Ashoka (famous Indian Emperor who renounced Violence) like transformation to the vegetarian cause from being a cattle rancher.
Vegetarians often get queried about their reason behind being one. As Howard points out, there are three ways to go about explaining it. Moral reason, Self/Health Reason and lastly Ecological/Environmental reason. Howard realising that moral reasoning is the most vulnerable one, not easily defendable, ignores it and goes about brilliantly presenting how meat eating habits in America has led to deterioration in health and devastation of the environment, backing up with first-hand experiences and scientific references.

Personally I feel it is not just the meat-eaters who may have to make hard choices. Meat-Eaters may argue that Rice cultivation is also a major cause of Methane (Global Warming) gas and creates strain on resources in terms of land/water. One can argue that the Chinese and Indian demand for Rice may create severe problems in future. But it is hard to deny the Author's assertion: meat-eating diet and hence cattle ranching's negative effects are multi-fold, in terms of health, spread of pandemics, environmental , depriving land of nutrients and are of much more severe and immediate concern to us.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone thinking about vegan/vegetarianism.......2007-04-28

This book belongs on every animal lover's shelf - a must read, that very easily could make the difference between a hesitant omnivore, and a full fledged veggie!

5 out of 5 stars An interesting perspective.......2007-04-14

Who wouldn't be curious to read about a former cattle rancher turned vegan?

By the time I read this book, I had already done quite a bit of reading on ve getarianism and its impacts on health, animals and the environment. So while I was already familiar with much of the general content of the book, Mr. Lyman's story was a very interesting and fun read.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars disappointing to say the least.......2007-08-31

With so many good books on the topic available, don't waste you time on this one. Not well written, it is more of a series of the author's opinions about how the US has gone to hell in a hand cart and very little real helpful information about expatriation.

2 out of 5 stars Truth as one sees it.......2007-06-28

This was our first read about the idea of living in Mexico. While much of this was informative, we just gave up listening to the bias against just about everything American (U.S.) - Americans and American youth, NAFTA, American advertising on Mexican TV, American crime, American medicine, etc. Being expats ourselves for many years, we believe that some things in American culture are worthwhile. There was a very good discussion on Mexican crime (or lack of it) that convinced us that Mexico is generally safe. His story portrayed living on the cheap - a good thing and represents one end of the spectrum of lifestyles possible in Mexico. I found his understanding of the history of Mexico pretty shallow - statements he makes about the perceived secularization of the culture does not recognize that Mexico has a long, bloody history regarding the place of religion in that culture. And there were other places that the author seems to have missed more plausible historical explanations for what was being observed. The style was an easy read but don't let this be your only guide to living in Mexico or to expatriating in general.

4 out of 5 stars Informative, easy to read, and funny.......2007-05-29

While most books are fairly cut and dry, The Plain Truth about Living in Mexico is informative, easy to read, and funny. I was able to easily get through this book in two days and read it at every opportunity I could gather. Why? Because it's not about boring facts, but instead the author adds stories and observations which change the tempo and keeps it entertaining. Overall it's a great book and I highly recommend it if you're considering a move or extended stay in central Mexico.

4 out of 5 stars excellent info for everyday life in mexico.......2007-04-16

I totally enjoyed the laid-back, easy to read style of this book. It offers alot of "insider" info, that I wouldn't have considered, ie the chapter on noise levels. Having visited Mexico on several occasions, many stories made me laugh out loud. I could really feel like I was there. I think when exploring retirement to Mexico (or any other country) it is extremely helpful to read as many books, and obtain as many view points as possible in addition to physically adventuring as well. This is a great book for those persons who desire to intergrate as much as possible into everyday Mexican life. It may not be appreciated as much for those folks desiring a more "gated community" experience. I would highly reccommend this book for anyone looking at making a move south of the border.

2 out of 5 stars editorial intrusions.......2007-03-12

There are many good data points in this book, however, the author insists on revealing that he comes from a disfunctional family, suffers from The Fatigue, and harbours a (sour grapes?) dislike for automobiles and well-heeled gringo retirees. This might irritate anyone who purchases this book as a reference aid, and unfortunately, also seems to compromise the author's objectivity.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Libertarian Logic.......2007-06-26

Patten gives a good exposition of a number of different ways that people can go wrong with their thinking. The problem is, in his book he himself commits almost every one of the logical errors he so lucidly defines. He decries overgeneralization and then goes on to discuss how all lawyers are liars. "Attorneys as a group are people who like to twist the truth and make things seem real that are not. They are advocates. Bending the truth is part of their business." p. 135. Granted, some lawyers bend the truth, but so do some authors. Patten talks about truth value in pp. 28-29, and pontificates that all scientific knowledge is hypothetical and tentative because inductive reasoning is hypothetical and tentative. Karl Popper, in Conjectures and Refutations: The Growth of Scientific Knowledge (Routledge Classics) posits that the essence of scientific knowledge is that it is falsifiable. That's why we have the theory of relativity and the theory of evolution, because there is always the possibility that data will be discovered which will falsify the theories. But then, when Patten talks about the theory of evolution, he passionately tells us that it "is a fact, not a theory." p. 196. Ironically, in the next paragraph he tells us that the more passionately something is believed, the more likely it is wrong.

Patten decries partial selection of the evidence, but the book abounds in examples he gives where he has partially selected the evidence in order to arrive at conclusions congenial to his predetermined libertarian agenda. He confronts and "solves" numerous knotty conundra in a few paragraphs where experts have devoted volumes to the problems without a clear resolution. One example of this is his two page treatment of the trial of Jesus. Libraries have been written on this subject. E.g. The Trial and Death of Jesus; The Trial of Jesus of Nazareth; Six Trials of Jesus, The. His exposition on the trial betrays his total lack of insight as to the issues. Per Patten, Jesus stood trial because he told the truth about current conditions among the Hebrews. p. 195. The Gospels suggest a number of reasons for Jesus' trial -- his claim to the son of God, his claim to be Messiah, his cleansing of the Temple, his raising of Lazarus, the fear of the Sanhedrin that he would provoke a tragically unsuccessful uprising against Rome -- but not the reason stated by Patten. It is quite a coincidence that Patten divines a reason for Jesus' trial which is so congenial to Patten's libertarian agenda. Time and again Patten does this, cherry-picking his facts to make his superficial analysis coincide with his preconceptions.

Patten warns the reader to watch out for reasoners who have a hidden agenda, but he himself appears to have a hidden agenda of validating his libertarian views by putting them in a book on critical thinking and passing them off as good examples of critical thinking. Two much better books on critical thinking are Asking the Right Questions: A Guide to Critical Thinking (8th Edition) and How to Think Straight: An Introduction to Critical Reasoning.

1 out of 5 stars Abounding with the Errors He Warns Against (and Some He Doesn't).......2007-05-26

Dr. Patten warns us against accepting unsubstantiated assertions. This is good advice. But on p. 61, Dr. Patten says "Barbara Boxer, senator from California, who doesn't know the difference between a revolver and a semiautomatic pistol, is unlikely to shed intelligent light on the relative safety of either gun." That statement consists of an unsubstantiated assertion, followed by a conclusion based on that assertion. But what if she is actually very knowledgeable about guns. She could be, for all I know. So the conclusion is in doubt.

Then Dr. Patten goes on to say "Yet Boxer considers herself fully qualified to frame laws on subjects about which she obviously knows little." Could it be that she considers herself qualified to frame laws because she IS so qualified by virtue of having been elected by the people of California to do just that? This hostile mind-reading ("She considers . . . .") is beginning to seem very like a hatchet job. Why does Dr. Patten make such an effort to disparage Senator Boxer? On the same page 61, Dr. Patten says "Biased authority is, to the extent of the bias, not reliable." By the evidence of his own words, I suspect Dr. Patten is biased against Senator Boxer, and is therefore not to be trusted on that subject. I COULD BE WRONG! The proof, either way, is not to be found in the book or in this review.

Another example of what appears to be hostile mind-reading is on p. 97: "The rationale at the root of the government's attitude is . . . ." If the government has explicitly so stated its rationale, then I apologize for doubting it. But if this is a rationale assumed by Dr. Patten and represented as fact, it may be misleading. An almost certain indication of an unreliable (and defamatory) claim to follow is "They want to"

On p. 160, "Classic false analogy: . . . the brain is like a computer. . . . The brain is not a computer AND IT IS NOT LIKE A COMPUTER." (emphasis added) Then follows a long list of differences between a brain and a computer, followed by the question "Is the analogy helpful?" But Dr. Patten entirely misses the point. Dr. Patten is using the technique of "setting up a straw man and knocking it down," which is to grossly overstate what is claimed (in this case an analogy) and then refute that gross overstatement. "The brain is like a computer" does NOT mean that the brain is precisely isomorphic with a computer in every respect. It merely means that there are points of similarity. The analogy is useful in understanding certain aspects of what brains and computers do. If you want to cut rabbits in two (split hares) say that a human brain, when its Adult ego state is cathected, can perform many of the same functions as a computer. No, the brain doesn't do it the same way the computer does it. For that matter, neither does the computer. My brain can add 36 and 48 and get the correct answer, 84. So can a computer. But I can think of four computers that I have programmed (in assembly language) that perform that simple task in four different ways, albeit they would all get the same result my brain did using a fifth way.

On p. 209, Dr. Patten proves that he is not extremely knowledgeable in the field of economics. He claims that the calculation of the national debt is "skewed" because it does not take into account the nation's assets. But debt is not the same thing as net worth. Net worth, if positive, is the excess of total assets over total debt. If total debt exceeds total assets, then net worth is negative. OF COURSE our national assets "are never considered in calculating the national debt." Debt is what is owed. Assets are not. The calculation of the national debt is not skewed because it is not a correct calculation of national net worth.

Chapter 7 is a useful description of "Scams, Deceptions, Ruses, Swindles, Hoaxes and Gaslights. The latter term comes from the movie "Gaslight," and refers to a campaign to confuse and disorient the victim.

On p. 250, Dr. Patten attempts a definition of relevance (of evidence). He says that "Evidence is relevant if it pertains directly and unemotionally to the merit of the position at issue AND SUPPORTS THE CONCLUSION. (emphasis added) Consider the following in the light of this definition. (1) A crime was committed in Boston last Saturday. (2) Conclusion: Joe was the perpetrator. (3) Evidence declared not relevant by the above definition: Proof that Joe has been in Tokyo for the last two weeks, and has not yet left Tokyo. This evidence is declared not relevant because it does not support the conclusion. I don't think I'd like that standard of evidence if I were the defendant. Granted, Dr, Patten gives a better definition on the next page (251), but that is no excuse for giving a bad definition on page 250.

If you want a book on logic, pass this one up; there are better choices, e.g. Introduction to Logic, by Irving Copi, or Crimes Against Logic, by Jamie Whyte

2 out of 5 stars a little caution needed.......2006-02-27

One of the most confusing things about logic and reason is that it all necessarily depends on what you mean by the words you use, which is to say... it all depends. I note for example, in the introductory chaper, page 1, "Overgeneralization", there are a couple major overgeneralizations. That's why they needed to invent math and science, where nothing is real except precise definitions, and logic works wonderfully. Using reason with actual real things takes more than logic.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely........2005-11-22

Despite the typographical errors, I think this book is absolutely wonderful. The author is informative and funny enough to make me smile and want to continue reading.

Definitely a great book for people who are just starting to dab their fingers into stuffy critical thinking and self improvement. Very fun.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Examples, but falls short in editing.......2005-08-02

This book has helped to change the way I analyze language. It is a very interesting read due to the varied examples and well-reasoned analyses. The author's tone gets annoying at times, but it is tolerable. I am perplexed by the book's constant errors of grammar. There is one glaring mistake on nearly every page. It greatly reduces the readability of this title. I would still recommend the book to anyone who wants to more accurately tell fact from fiction and truth from lies, but you'll be very frustrated with all the mistakes along the way.

Tales from the Vine: Juicy Tomatoes Talk About Being Female, Over Fifty, and in Full Bloom

Juicy Tomatoes introduces you to a group of women who will happily plead guilty to being female and over fifty. That's because they know that being a fifty-plus woman means having wisdom, passion, and savvy to spare, and that the second half of life can be just as fun and fulfilling as the first. They've seen through the myths that say an over-fifty woman can't have good sex or a new career and they've forged ahead despite societal pressure to quietly step down. These juicy tomatoes are redefining what it means to be a woman over fifty and blazing a trail that promises to change the culture and the lives of those green tomatoes who come after them. Juicy Tomatoes is a refreshing and revealing look at how women meet the challenges and embrace the opportunities that come with age. These stories from life beyond fifty are funny, poignant, inspiring, and unflinchingly honest.

"Written with insight, humor, and a 'we're getting older so we may as well enjoy it' spirit, Juicy Tomatoes perfectly captures the real issues and essence of midlife for women." - Susan Evans and Joan Avis, authors of The Women Who Broke All the Rules: How the Choices of a Generation Changed Our Lives

" Juicy Tomatoes is one of those books you'll read and then give to all your women friends. It's insightful, optimistic, wise, and yes, funny. Susan Swartz is telling us things we all need to know about ourselves." - Robin Beeman, author of A Parallel Life and Other Stories and A Minus Tide

4 out of 5 stars Good News About Turning 50 and Beyond.......2006-09-28

****
This was a great little book (200 pages, 7.5" x 5.5" book)! It consists of chapters with various themes (e.g., "Up with Menopause") filled with short experpts of women's opinions and then text/commentary about them.

It is a small book packed with a lot of wisdom, though. If you're feeling down about turning 50, or feel like life is getting more limited rather than expansive, this is the book for you. Or, if you're aging and not liking it, this is also the book for you. I thought it was wonderful; it made me excited about going through menopause.

It's an easy, fun read that will even appeal to non-readers because of the format. It also would make a terrific gift!

2 out of 5 stars Seemed like a reprint of a bulletin board.......2006-07-19

The book was primarily a reprint of short quotes grouped together by subject. There was no summary information or analysis. I stopped reading half way through. Very boring!

5 out of 5 stars Juicy humor.......2001-02-05

Susan Swartz combines optimism, humor, and reality in ways few people manage. Sure, menopause signals the end of a phase of life, AND it opens new doors. Her numerous interviews reveal about every possible take on this unavoidable part of life, from women in all walks of life. A great gift for a friend who's there, or almost there.

Three weeks ago I heard the author on the radio and went out and bought the book. Ten pages later I went to Amazon.com and bought 5 copies for friends. Today I am ordering 3 more. I even recommended it to my therapist!

5 out of 5 stars Some times it's ok to be inviiable.......2000-12-09

My sister, who is older, sent me this book. I wanted to cry with appreciation. I could never put in words the feelings that I had inside untill I read this book. We are all special no matter what our age. With youth comes beauty, but the beauty that women of a certain age have, comes from confidence and wisdom. This book only confirms what I knew deep inside all the time.

4 out of 5 stars This book can change your outlook on life!.......2000-04-18

I bought this book a few years ago, and find myself going back to freshen up with it every few months. Power Schmoozing is still an interesting read. Terri Mandell's book provides excellent insight into the art of socializing amongst people, including social etiquette rules for "the game" of everyday life. It has changed how I perceive and interact with others, at least somewhat. Applying some of the techniques can recover what would otherwise be an akward moment of personal disaster into a memorable and often endearing episode. I had once thought that I was the only person that felt like a bit of an outsider around new people, until I discovered that everybody else has the same problem with 'breaking-the-ice' too! I have in the past recommended this book to others. If you are somewhat withdrawn, a social pessimist, or a bit low on confidence, this book could change your life!

As a student, I find that offering to help out at the registration desk at a conference has worked exceedingly well. I was able to get free admission to two separate full-day conferences for me within the last 2 weeks, and the opportunities to network with potential employers at the conference is even better. In its advice and content, Power Schmoozing has returned many times my original investment.

Find the courage within yourself to go forth boldly and truthfully... and have fun out there!

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK COULD CHANGE YOUR SOCIAL AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE.......2000-01-15

The techniques are brash and a bit scary. But you know what? I tried it, and it really works! I was mortified at first about being so bold until I just bit the bullet and used some of Mandell's ideas. Suddenly I'm the center of attention. My instinct was to panic and say, "Yeah, NEGATIVE attention..." But when I realized my social calendar was filling up and my morning call lists were getting shorter (because people were actually calling me instead), I knew I was onto something. And it gets easier with time. I think my personality has really opened up in the process, I feel much more confident, and socially at ease wherever I go. In control of a room rather than the room being in control of me. Bottom line... no guts, no glory. You've gotta really want it to make it work. My guess is the majority of people are probably too timid to even give these techniques a try. I've heard Mandell does great seminars on "Power Schmoozing" as well.

1 out of 5 stars Thanks, but no thanks........1999-07-13

I read parts of her book. One of the things she recommends is that if you can't afford to pay for a social event, to sneak in!?!?!? Thanks, but NO THANKS!!!!! Perhaps I'm too honest, but I got a problem with that technique. The consequences of getting caught and the damage to your reputation would far outweigh any benefit.

2 out of 5 stars Too heavy-handed........1999-02-08

I found the author's treatment of schmoozing to be very serious and heavy. If someone were to try her techniques, I am quite sure most people would be turned off. Schmoozing, as I understand it, is a process whereby both parties can benefit. Mandell's approach is very self serving.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but better guides available.......1998-11-29

For example, I found the "Vault Reports Guide to Schmoozing" to be more current, more interesting, and more informative.

The book discusses common gynecological and women's health problems in a series of witty and entertaining letters. These letters, all educational, offer suggestions on what approaches to take in dealing with medical and other issues that typically bring women to an ob/gynecologist. The letters are spiced with art, a poem and quotes. Although its emphasis is on gynecology and women's health, it touches on some other medical issues that make women visit their doctors. The second half of the book briefly discusses the most common gynecological conditions and also provides an overview of sexually transmitted infections. A list of annotated websites dealing with the different topics in the book is provided for the reader who wants to pursue each subject in depth.

5 out of 5 stars Letters to My Sisters: Plain Truths and Straightforward Advice .......2007-05-17

I met Dr. Osuagwu at a recent luncheon where she was the keynote speaker. I was very impressed with her sincere mission of preventative health advice. I left the luncheon with two copies of her book; one for my collection of Ohio Authors and one for my soon-to-be graduating high school niece.
I would recommend this book as a loving gift to all graduating students, male and female. The information contained within would scare them straight, if not plant some seeds of knowlege that would normally take them decades (and mistakes) to learn.

4 out of 5 stars Wish all doctors cared this much........2006-10-06

It's rare these days to walk into a health provider's office and feel not only welcome but as if your provider truly has your best interests at heart. This book is what I imagine all doctors would be like if we weren't ruled by the clock and the dollar bill.

Dr. Osuagwu provides insight that's not only truly valuable for her readers, but she also humanizes the clinical voice of today's practitioner. If every doctor cared for her patients the way Dr. Osuagwu shows she does, perhaps we wouldn't need a book like this as much as we do.

Many Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Should be in every woman's library.......2006-05-31

Quick read, yet wonderfully informative. I love the stories and I love her frankness. I am a thirty something who feels very aware, in control of my health issues and makes good use of my doctors. Yet, thanks to Letters to my Sisters I will now approach my doctor visits, especially my OB/GYN visits with a different mindset. There is so much more to know and this book delivers it in a way that is not overwhelming or scary as medical matters can quickly become. Who knew there were that many STDs?! I also love the resources at the end.

Again, great reference book that I won't be giving away or loaning out, but it will definitely make my gift giving list.

5 out of 5 stars An informational tool and mock heart-to-heart with your best friend........2006-05-07

Letters to my Sisters: Plain truths and straightforward advice from a Gynecologist, is much like a reference book, but it reads like a story. It is comprised of short letters regarding several different struggles that women go through in life. It's a quick and easy way to inform yourself, your mother, your sisters or your friends, and can be a useful tool for girls in the beginning stages of puberty to women who are post-menopausal. Whether it is a lump in your breast, weight gain, domestic violence or any other physical or mental problem, honesty and encouragement from a physician is an essential part of treatment and recovery. Osuagwu gives her readers that needed push. She is blatantly honest, but in a good way. In one letter she writes: "Douching is not good for you, unless it is your way of supporting my practice," and in another, "You are fat! How else do you expect me to put it?" As an informational tool or a mock heart-to-heart with your best friend, Letters to my Sisters is truly a book that every woman should experience.

5 out of 5 stars A great testiment to the power of God.......2004-03-13

I think that the book was a great story of how a cult came to full christian faith. It's an amazing tribute to the power of the word of God.
That is not, however why I am writing this review. I am writing it based on the comments above.
For on thing: OF COURSE THE AUTHORS FAVOR MARTIN LUTHER'S THEOLOGY! THEY ARE LUTHERAN PASTORS!!!!!!!!!!
On another note, please dont misquote what Luther Said about the book of James. He didn't call it a house of straw that should be removed from the bible, in fact he had this to say,
"Though this epistle of St.James was rejected by the acients, I praise it and concider it a good book, because it sets up no doctrines of men but vigorously promulgates the law of God" (LW 35:395).
If you want to quote, fine, but please quote directly and cite your sources to prove that you know what you are talking about and that you didn't just find your facts heresay from someone else.

1 out of 5 stars Usurping The Kingdom!.......2002-09-19

Discovering the Plain Truth is a testimony of unbelievers coming into a system of faith with a premeditated plan for the destruction of that faith.
The disrespect for Mr Armstrong is evident from the outset.
In the 'real' Worldwide Church of God no one would be called 'Smith', 'Johnson', or 'Armstrong' !
The attempted disintegration step by step of every major belief of the 'real' WCG merely shows that these authors never believed those precepts to begin with. The authors present a 132

page account of guerilla warfare, a foray,if you will,of unbelievers into a territory strange to them with the sole intent of destroying the government of that territory!
To the Protestant world, those faithful folks who use the name of Christ to their own advantage, Mr Tkach is a hero! If a person
who has heard the truth (faith comes by hearing) has a shred of doubt and needs a club of cohorts to assure him that obedience (to the ten commandments) is not relevant, this is the source of comfort they need!
Mr Herbert W Armstrong was just a man, tempted just as we are!
Yes! He sinned! Just as we do! Jesus Christ was tempted just as we are! Yet without sin.... therein lies our only hope of salvation! Mr Armstrong was a man of faith, charachter assassination is only to his credit! It shows he was more correct in his understanding of the word of God than his detractors! He did not acheive his goals by trickery. He did not 'lie in wait' for someone to die then grasp an opportunity build his own ideals in the middle of someone elses' work then knock down the walls and present some bright shiny new thing to be accepted by a deceived world.

2 out of 5 stars Straw Man.......2001-09-03

The best part of the book is Chapter Two, "How it all Began," an interesting summary of the history of the WCG under Herbert Armstrong. The rest of the book is filled with errors and confused theological arguments. The authors claim that Herbert Armstrong "denied that Jesus was human"(p.13) and that he taught that Jesus possessed "only a single divine nature"(p.47). This is false-the WCG always taught that Jesus was fully human as well as God. Indeed, in "Mystery of the Ages"(p.211), Armstrong writes "We need to bear in mind that though Jesus was God in the human flesh, he was also human even as you and I." In fact, one of the Tkach doctrinal changes was the reversal of Armstrong's teaching that Jesus could have sinned (although He never did) since He was fully human. When this change was made, Armstrong's teaching was called "the great gamble" theory-the authors refer to this on page 92 but apparently do not realize it refutes their claim that Armstrong taught that Jesus was not human.
With respect to law and grace, Herbert Armstrong never taught that we are saved by works. The current WCG leaders even admit in their interview on page 123 that "HWA knew that salvation was by grace, not by works" and that HWA "meant that lawkeeping was a consequence of faith, not a cause of salvation." Armstrong wrote thousands of pages of books and articles and no one has ever produced a quote where he taught salvation by works. The teaching was quite plain and clear-works are what we owe to God, but they do not save us. The authors, as well as Greg Albrecht (who says on p.109 "Christians want to read about Martin Luther") are fond of Luther's theology. This is the same Martin Luther who was so confused about works and grace that he called the epistle of James "an epistle of straw" which he claimed did not belong in the Bible. Luther's 'soundness' of mind is shown in his work "Concerning the Jews and Their Lies"(1543), where he "not only repeated all medieval libels against Jews but went further than his predecessors in explicitly preaching violence: 'We are at fault in not slaying them,' Luther wrote"(The Holocaust Encyclopedia-p.18).
Then there is the circular reasoning (p.42); one cannot use councils and creeds of one's own church as proofs against those who claim to be the spiritual heirs of the early dissidents. Also, on page 50, the authors cite 1Corin15:42-44,51-52 as 'proof' of the immortal soul, but ignore verse 53 which says that "this mortal must put on immortality". By the way, was Jesus teaching salvation by works when he said in John14:15 "If you love Me, keep My commandments"? How about in Matt19:17 when He said "But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments"? Was Peter teaching salvation by works in Acts2:38 when he said "Repent"? How about Paul in 1Corin7:19 where he says "Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping the commandments of God is what matters"?
The point the authors (and Luther) miss is that Paul in his writings is addressing those who thought they could be justified by keeping the law (see Gal2:16,21), not those who kept the law out of obedience and love toward God (see 1Jn2:4 and 1Jn5:2-3). James, on the other hand, was addressing those who thought they could be saved by faith without any accompanying works. We should always take the clear, unambiguous Scriptures and use them to interpret the confusing ones. The authors write (p.59) "The church is described in a number of ways in the Bible. ...None of these designations for the church alludes to the keeping of the sabbath, or to any law categories whatsoever." Well, none of the 13 verses they cite does, but Rev12:17 and Rev14:12 CLEARLY describe the Church as those who "keep the commandments of God." How is it then legalism for Armstrong to say that we must obey the commandments? If Jesus, knowing this controversy would arise, had wanted to settle the matter in advance, He could not have taught more clearly than He did in Matt5:17-19 when He said "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets". Likewise Paul when he said in Rom3:31 "Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not!" And those who claim to be New Covenant Christians would do well to read Heb8:8-10 to see what that covenant is.
And finally, the Global Church of God was started near the end of 1992, not in 1990 as the authors claim on page 74.

2 out of 5 stars A general overiew of a cult coming to Christ.......1999-01-21

This book provides a good look at the history and teachings of the Worldwide Church of God (WCG) and how it was transformed from a cult to a Christian Evangelical Church. However, it is aimed at an audience not familiar with the WCG and does not get into much detail at all.

The book was disappointingly brief and somewhat academic in its approach. What could have been made to be an exciting narrative on events that lead to the dramatic turn around in the WCG is instead a short look at main points. Further, the book hinted a problems and concerns within the church but never explored them in any detail or gave any indication of sources.

Outline: 1) Present Situation (pg 15-17) 2) History of Herbert Armstrong (pg 19-40) -- drew heavily on Armstrong's autobiography and did not really go beyond the surface 3) Teachings (pg 41-59) -- good examination of WCG teachings 4) 1986 to now (pg 61-71) -- only ten pages are actually dedicated to the title of the book -- a disappointingly short, cursory explanation of what happened. 5) Reaction (pg 72-83) -- once again, too brief -- only six paragraphs are dedicated to "the dissenters." 6) Future (pg 83-89) -- offers only a number of "we hopes" but no informed expectations. Appendix (pg 90-132) is an examination of the new WCG teachings and transcripts of interview with WCG leadership.

Overall, I found the book accurate but a disappointing effort and not worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Churches DO REPENT and come to the TRUTH!!.......1998-11-28

This is a great book, with a neat story to tell of a religious cult that eventually turned to Biblical Christianity. The World-Wide Church of God, was a sect founded by Herbert W. Armstrong. This group became a legalistic works-oriented, Old Testament worshipping sect (often called a cult by in the know researchers) that was willing to look at itself again in light of the Scriptures versus the dogma espoused by the founder and his son. A religious group CAN come cack to orthodoxy and to the fellowship of Bible-loving believers of all denominations. One would hope the LDS church would follow in the example of TWWCOG, since they claim to be Christians. A fascinating read. For a full review please email me.

    Book Description

This riveting inside story of the intense search for the Salt Lake City teenager who was kidnapped from her bed reveals never-before-told details of the largest investigation in Utah state history. Paced like a thriller, this true account moves between the parallel stories of the searchers and the abductor. The firsthand account of Tom Smart, Elizabeth's uncle and one-time suspect, reveals the details of the flawed police investigation, the media's manipulation of the family, and the eyewitness account of nine-year-old Mary Katherine Smart that went largely ignored by investigators. New research is presented on the family background of disturbed street preacher Brian David Mitchell, who kidnapped Elizabeth as part of a bizarre polygamous plot. Also examined is the critical role of the media, revealing the essential part played by John Walsh and others in facilitating Elizabeth's safe return, and the manipulative influence of Fox News and Bill O'Reilly. Going beyond a mere eyewitness account, the book includes information culled from interviews with more than 150 people involved in the search and investigation, notes from family meetings, and memos from law enforcement officials.

3 out of 5 stars the startling truth behind the elizabeth investigation.......2007-08-05

i enjoyed this book but thought elizabeth was being taken advantage of by her parents and uncle.she should of been kept in seclusion and not been subject to the public.i feel that in the future this young lady is going to have some problems.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointed in this one. .......2007-05-13

I read this book and I almost feel like it was a serious waste of my time. Tom Smart (uncle of Elizabeth Smart) seems like he is trying to take the stage in this account. Everything in this book you have probably already heard through the media. The book has a very slow start--almost excruciating to get through the first half. I was bored to tears.

I feel for Elizabeth and her Family and would have liked the focus to be on them, their reactions, their feelings, and on Elizabeth's recovery. The nation cares about Elizabeth and how this has affected her and not about Tom Smart's INSOMNIA.

One day in the far Future, hopefully, Elizabeth will write a book and let us know the story of being a survivor, her feelings, and her journey to overcoming this trauma. After all, no one else knows what she and her poor parents went through.

Bottom Line: I found this account to be One-sided and Exagerrated on the Author's part. Tom Smart wanted the Spotlight and Shame on him.

I would not recommend to a friend for Good Reading.

5 out of 5 stars Read, Read ,Read!.......2006-06-13

The first time I Read this, I felt like Tom Smart was talking to me Everyday. I'ts so cool, I think the book should tell about everyone else but pervert and pervet Jr. I understand you have to see why he kidnapped Liz, but his mindset is that of President Bush, Stupid and hateful. Everything you need to know about her abduction is all in here. A great read. Don't read it too many times at once, It might scare you.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but her parents book is a little easier to read.......2006-01-28

I was completly stuck on the Elizabeth Smart case when it was all unfolding. I was graduating high school at the time and couldnt imagine with all the dreams I had having them all stolen in the middle of the night. The book is a good read and really details the case well. The only problem I had is the book seems very very one sided. The brother talks all about how much he did and the others did and I kinda felt like he was acting as if he was the parent. It may just be the way I read it but I did find it interesting to get a good profile of the people that took her. Its worth a read but dont forget to read her parents book too.

    4 out of 5 stars --Compelling--.......2005-12-17

IN PLAIN SIGHT is the story of the investigation to locate Elizabeth Smart, the teenage girl who was abducted from her home in Salt Lake City. Journalists, Tom Smart and Lee Benson wrote the book. Tom also happens to be Elizabeth's uncle and served as the spokesman for Elizabeth's family during the horrible kidnapping ordeal of his niece.

The search for Elizabeth went on for nine long months and this book is an account of what took place during that time period. Aside from the shocking fact of a young woman's abduction, is the story of the local police and FBI who searched for her, but often seemed to ignore the information that was brought forward by family members and volunteers. The authors also claim that the investigating agencies didn't seem to share the information that they had obtained with each other. There were several sightings of the girl, and the man who had taken her. At one point, after breaking into a building, he was arrested, but released when he said that he was just trying to make a home for his wife and daughter.

This book presents one side of the story, but the FBI and local police probably had other things to take into consideration with their examinations of the events. Apparently the family was investigated and we've all seen enough news stories to know that everyone is looked at when a crime is committed. Unfortunately, we've also heard a lot of stories about the lack of cooperation between different police agencies.

This was an informative book and hopefully the Smart family can overcome the horror that took over their lives. I'm sure the heart of every parent in the world goes out to Elizabeth.
