Book Description

Whether you discovered him with his New York Times bestselling stand-alone novels or you fell in love with the award-winning books that preceded them—or you've never read him at all—anyone who loves a thriller will love international literary superstar Harlan Coben's latest, Promise Me.

It has been six years since entertainment agent Myron Bolitar last played superhero. In six years he hasn't thrown a punch. He hasn't held, much less fired, a gun. He hasn't threatened or been threatened. He hasn't called his friend Win, still the scariest man he knows, to back him up or get him out of trouble. In the past six years, none of his clients have been murdered—a real positive for his business.

But all that is about to change. Because of the simple urge to protect two neighborhood high-school girls from the all-too-dangerous and all-too-common mistake of getting in a car with a drunk driver, Myron has them make him a promise: If they are ever in a bind but are afraid to call their parents, they should call him rather than get in a car with someone who's been drinking. Several nights later, the call comes at 2:00 am, and true to his word, Myron picks up one of the girls in midtown Manhattan and drives her to a quiet cul-de-sac in New Jersey where she says her friend lives.

The next day, the girl's parents discover that their daughter is missing. And that Myron was the last person to see her. Now, in a desperate attempt to fulfill a well-intentioned promise gone nightmarishly wrong, Myron must become a hero again to save a young girl's life. BACKCOVER: “Every time you think Harlan Coben couldn't get any better at uncoiling a whipsnake of a page-turner, he comes along with a new novel that somehow surpasses its predecessor.”
—San Francisco Chronicle

“Just as Alfred Hitchcock carved out a niche with films about a seemingly innocent person caught in machinations beyond comprehension, Harlan Coben is earning the literary equivalent. . . . Hitchcock would be envious.”
—Sun-Sentinel (Florida)

“Very few writers can induce in their readers the kind of trancelike state, punctuated by frequent `wows,' that most of us associate with much-loved books from childhood. Coben can.”
—Booklist

“Coben chisels his characters quickly, convincingly, unforgettably . . . non- stereotypically.”
—Forbes

“Swift pacing, strong lead characters. . . . Coben can write thrillers that lift readers off their seats.”
—Publishers Weekly

“The maestro of mystery.”
—Life

2 out of 5 stars I never got past the third chapter of the Audo Book........2007-08-17

I purchased this audio book for a road trip. What a waste! I'm sure the story is pretty good since I've read Harlan Coben's books before. But the narration was truly awful. Slurred sentences, skipped words. Indecipherable to the point where I had to replay chapters just to figure out who is who.

Don't know if Mr. Coben was trying to save $$ by narrating his own book, but I'd highly recommend that he hire Scott Brick or Len Cariou to do his narration in the future. These guys narrate for DeMille, Baldacci and Patterson.

1 out of 5 stars Stick to writing!.......2007-08-16

I'm a big fan of Harlan Coben's previous non-Bolitar works and thought I'd give this audio CD a go. What a disappointment! Coben has two voices: one for Bolitar and another hybrid snooty/feminine/smarmy one for whomever Bolitar is speaking to at the time. The "other" voice doesn't even stay consistent from one line to the next - listen to his interactions with Claire or Erik if you need convincing - it was difficult to keep the characters straight if there were more than 3 in one scene.
Stick to the writing, Mr Coben, and leave the audio to the pros.

4 out of 5 stars The Return of the Myron.......2007-08-09

It's been seven years since Coben put out a Myron Bolitar book, claiming he wasn't going to write one until the right story came to him. Well, as fans, we finally get the return of Myron and his cohorts Win, Esperanza, Zorra, and Big Cindy. Myron is in a relationship with everyday-woman Ali who lost her husband to 9/11. Myron reaches out to Erin (Ali's daughter) and Aimee (daughter of a life long friend) after overhearing a conversation between them about drunk driving. It's the standard 'call me anytime, anywhere and I'll come get you' spiel. Aimee does just that and then disappears. Myron is suspect number one and now he has to do whatever he can to find the missing Aimee, which seems very similar to another girl, Katy Rochester, who disappeared several months earlier and there's connections to link the two girls. It's a rollercoaster ride to the end as Myron, with Win's help, seeks out the truth and tries to find Aimee. Issues dealt with include high school/college acceptance, drugs in school, abuse, pregnancy, and adult film industry.

All-in-all, it's not a bad story. There's some great lines between Myron and Win, tension is built well in the story, suspects arise, but... there's somethings that are obviously just filler and the ending just doesn't really fit correctly, like he was reaching for a plot twist at the end. I also hate the new size of paperbacks 'for reader's convenience' but that's publishing company not the author. I'm still waiting for a movie adaptation of one of the books, my choices... John Cusack as Myron, Neal McDonough as Win, and Selma Hayak as Esperanza. So overall, welcome return to Myron & co. but the ending is weak.

3 out of 5 stars Mindless treadmill thrill.......2007-08-08

"Promise Me" is a quick read with a decent amount of suspence. This is the first book I have read of Harlan Coben (and thus my first Myron Bolitar encounter), and I am not in a rush to read another. It is not all that bad, just bland and frankly a bit too predictable. The characters are mostly one-dimensional (including Myron who is flawless and rather bland) or completely unbelievable - such as pretty-boy Win, the sidekick provider of "justified" gratuitous violence.
The story revovles around a case of two seemingly unconnected missing teenage girls, Aimee Biel and Katie Rochester. Myron knows the first one with whom he once made a promise (hence the title of the book). If she ever needed a safe ride, she was to call Myron and he would take her wherever she needed to go - no questions asked, all for the sake of preventing drunk driving. Of course, the call comes. Late at night. A semi-drunk Myron answers - and eventually provides the ride to a mystery location. Aimee disappears... About the same time, Katie disappears; however, Dr Skylar - a geneticist (who conveniently "studies faces") sees her in a crowd whereupon the girl begs her not to tell anyone that she has seen her.
So, the remainder of the novel focuses on Myron's quest to find the connections between the girls interspersed with his romantic interludes with a 9/11 widow. There are, of course, sprinklings of sadistic violence and visits to the seedier parts of town as well as high school politics and athletic metaphors (yes, really).

The language is simple and cliche-ridden. Emotional descriptions such as "he felt yucky" abound, and of course there are the many humorous attempts such as this one: "He wanted to ask the pay phone who had dialed his number and called him a [...] and said that he'd pay for what he'd done. But the phone wouldn't talk to him. It had been that kind of day." But even so, it is refreshingly unpretensious, and the story develops with the right pace.

The expected twists and turns along the way leads to a somewhat predictable conclusion, a bit similar to Hercule Poirot giving a concluding speech of how he solved it all, although more in a Matlock style.

All in all, a decent read for the lazy summer days at the beach, or as was my case: expect to extend your time on the treadmill to "just read one more chapter"...

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Thriller Writers Around.......2007-08-04

Harlan Coben continues to prove that he is one of the best thriller writers around at the moment. A page turner is a much used phrase but in this case it is really appropriate. The author's books are always so well structured and his character's well rounded. He is obviously comfortable with his style and ability and this transmits itself to the reader making the reading of his books sheer pleasure from start to finish. Coben has now got a string of best selling crime novels behind him and all I can say is that I hope he continues to write for many years to come. The author lives in New Jersey with his wife and four children.

It has been an unsually quiet period for sports agent Myron Bolitar. In fact in the last six years very little has happened to take him out of his comfort zone. He has not taken a punch, fired a gun, in anger anyway, and his clients have managed to stay alive, a big plus in his line of work.

But of course nothing lasts forever. By trying to do the right thing and protect two neighbourhood teenage girls from the all too dangerous and common mistake of getting into a car with a driver who has been drinking, Myron has the girls promise him that if they are ever in trouble and afraid to call their parents, they should call him instead. Little does he know what he has let himself in for.

Sure enough several nights later a call comes through in the early hours and true to his promise myron picks up one of the girls and drop her in a quiet cul-de-sac where she says a friend lives. The following day the girl's parents discover their daughter is missing and Myron was the last person to see her . . .

4 out of 5 stars Jaid Black's contribution is the best, but the others are worth a read .......2007-08-13

Captivated By You - Author: Sherrilyn Kenyon

Rhea Stevenson is pretty hot, but she's also a by the book girl, and a little uptight. She's secretly crazy about Ace, one of her fellow Bureau of American Defense (B.A.D.) agents. Since he's a womanizer and she's set on following the "no office romance" rule, she acts as if she hates him and gives him the cold shoulder/evil eye every chance she gets. Unfortunately she's been assigned to work a case with him that has her posing as a dominatrix at an exclusive club to catch a terrorist.

Ace Krux has got it bad for Rhea, but she hates him and he doesn't know why. Fortunately he's maneuvered her into working a case with him that will involve her in skimpy outfits practicing her dominatrix skills on him. He's hoping that his charm and their near nudity will result in a little action. His prayers are answered and things heat up pretty quickly between them after she ties him down. Only now Ace isn't so sure he likes the idea of sending her into a room alone with a terrorist.

The characters weren't terribly well developed, but we did catch small glimpses into what made them who they are, and that made the romance more believable. I like the lengths that Ace was willing to go to in order to keep Rhea safe.

Promise Me Forever - Author: Melanie George

Ten years ago Savannah Harper and Donovan Jerricho were crazy in love, but with his pro-football career taking off there was a lot of strain on their relationship and when a misunderstanding causes Donovan to believe that Savannah has slept with one of his friend, they break up and Donovan leaves town without looking back. Savannah is pregnant, a fact that Donovan knows nothing about, and never will if she has anything to say about it. Now Savannah, a single mom to a precocious little girl, has finally agreed to marry Jake, her boyfriend of two years. Only, a few days before her wedding, Donovan Jerricho blows back into town stirring up feelings she thought were dead. They are both angry and bitter about the past, but can't help feeling that pull towards each other. Donovan learns the truth about that old misunderstanding and realizes that he made a big mistake and threw away the only woman he ever loved, but can he convince her of that before she ties the knot? He just might if she gave him half a chance, but since she won't he resorts to drastic measures and kidnaps her and plans to hold her hostage in their old love nest until she hears him out. And when will she tell him that Reese is his daughter?

I'm not sure how I felt about this story. He resorted to kidnapping, which was kind of creepy, but he couldn't find it in him to hold her. It bothered me that Savannah was willing to marry Jake after she realized that she still loved Donovan and that she loved him more than Jake. It bothers me that such a sweet stand up sort of guy would marry someone who didn't love him wholeheartedly and slept with her ex shortly before the wedding. Seriously, doc, have a little self-respect! Nice is one thing, doormat is something else all together! I hated that Savannah didn't have the guts to let Donovan know that he had a child and that she didn't tell her kid who her father was.

Hunter's Right - Author: Jaid Black

Corporal Ronda Tipton, U.S Army, is excited about her new assignment. She's going to be stationed at a research base in the Arctic. Unfortunately, her helicopter crashes somewhere in the Arctic Circle and she is the only survivor. Hoping that she was somewhere near the base when the chopper crashed, she heads out on foot. When she finds what appears to be a door in the side of a mountain, she thinks her prayers have been answered. She soon finds that she was mistaken as she stumbles upon the hidden Viking civilization of New Sweden that has thrived underground for hundreds of years. She is discovered and chased by giant Viking men. She nearly escapes, but is caught by Lord Nikolas Ericsson, a cousin to the King and a revolutionary. He believes she is a military spy and questions her about how she came to New Sweden. When he learns she is telling the truth about the accident, she is sent off the bride auctions. The auctions were once a respected tradition, but the Kings corruption has turned it into something of a sex slave auction where the men fondle the women who are brought before them naked and shackled. When it's Ronda's turn up on the block she takes serious offense to being manhandled and uses her martial skills to smack down the offenders and get free. Just as all hell is breaking loose Nikolas claims Hunter's Right, the law that says a man may keep a woman he has captured. Nikolas did not intend to marry until after the revolution, but not only did Ronda make him hot, she was a fighter and he hated to see her punished or handed over to one of the Kings vile friends. Ronda believes she must escape and find the base so that she can inform the military of what is going in this secret world, but she soon finds herself drawn to Nikolas. Will she choose freedom or love?

The sexual stuff is hot ... really hot, though this whole chains and aphrodisiacs stuff kind of squicks me. I really enjoyed the characters and though the whole women as property thing doesn't appeal to me overly much, I found myself very intrigues by their world and most especially that prophecy of theirs. I've read one other novella and Deep, Dark & Dangerous which were both set in New Sweden and I have to say, I'm looking forward to more.

4 out of 5 stars 4 Stars for Jaid and Jaid Alone.......2007-04-14

First of all, I've never been a big fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon's BAD series. I think the stories are unrealistic, the heroes are arrogant alpha males with no redeeming qualities, and the women are too fast-mouthed and sassy for my tastes. Also, I'd already read the collection Born to Be BAD and had read the short story in this collection. I wasn't impressed the first time, and I was equally underwhelmed this time.

As for the Melanie George story, it was such a snooze, I skipped to the next story after reading the first 5 pages. Boring!

Thank God for Jaid Black, who might be the only reason this collection even sold. Hunter's Right is erotic, passionate, and entertaining--almost enough to make up for the clear misses by Kenyon and George. I read another story about Black's underground Vikings in the novella collection Playing Easy to Get, so if you liked Hunter's Right, I'd suggest you check that one out. It has another equally bad BAD story by Sherrilyn Kenyon, but also includes the first story in Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series, which is a real treat if you like paranormal romance. I have that collection to thank for leading me to Jaid Black, and while Hunter's Right was great, it's not enough to make Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down worth purchasing. I'd buy it used or check it out from the library instead.

3 out of 5 stars Almost a Loser, Saved by Jaid Black.......2007-02-13

Anthologies either tend to be really good or really bad. With authors Sherrilyn Kenyon, Melanie George and Jaid Black, I was expecting great stories and only Jaid Black delivered. If not for her story Hunter's Right, this book would have rated a quick trip to the garbage can.

The first story in the series is Sherrilyn Kenyon's Captivated by You. Secret Agents Rhea and Ace are assigned to a terrorist case whose leader prefers S&M. Rhea and Ace must learn the ins and outs (no pun intended)to successfully convince their quarry that they are legitimate S&M artists so they can gain his confidence and get the information to crack the case. The problem with this story is all the cheesy one liners and predictable interlog and jokes. It was actually rather boring.

The second story "Promise me Forever" by Melanie George was the worst of the three. I only thought the first one was boring until I read this story. If you want to be dumped by your longtime boyfriend after he becomes a famous football player only to take him back after he is down and out (and by the way dump your good as gold fiance for him) go ahead, but don't expect readers to buy it. There was no passion and no warm fuzzies with this story.

The last story by Jaid Black "Hunter's Right" was by far the best of the three stories. Ronda is a military official on a secret mission in the Artic Circle. When the helicopter she is on crashes, Ronda is the only survivor. Knowing there is a secret military headquarters nearby, Ronda goes searching for help only to stumble across a hidden underground civilization of an ancient race of Vikings. Believing the prophecy that their forefathers warned of where women would become near extinct because of genetic tampering with births, these Vikings venture above ground from time to time and steal unattached females to put on the "Bridal Auction Block". An injured Ronda stumbles onto an auction in progress and is horrified to see these women striped naked and inspected like livestock by men looking for wives. She attempts to flee, but is captured by gorgeous Nikolas Ericsson. Nikolas covets Ronda but believes she wouldn't want him, however when he sees her taken away in chains after beating [...] out of the auctioneers, he claims hunters rights to keep her safe. Nikolas is building his weapons supply and army to overthrow the current leader of the underground nation. He wants to restore more dignity to the bridal auction and make civilization better for all the citizens. When Ronda realizes she can never return to her old life, she decides to make the best of her marriage. Ronda and Nikolas end up falling in love. The sexual scenes definitely are not boring, however some people may be turned off by the crude language and descriptions both Ronda and Nikolas use. However, I think this story saved the series. I kind of wish it had been a longer more in depth story as these characters deserved development, but it was still good.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother.......2007-02-04

I like all of these authors, but this book had very little to offer in the way of erotic romance. Don't bother

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down..........2006-11-02

I thought the stories in this book were good for the length of each one. I have to say that "Captivated by You" was the best of all three. If you like short, steamy, predictable stories you'll like this book!

    2 out of 5 stars Falls Short.......2001-11-20

Debbie MacComber's short story was lacking compared to the rest of the Midnight Son's series. It was nice to hear what happened to the rest of our favorite characters from the other books (in fact it was more interesting than the Scott/Chrissie main plot). I didn't buy Scott's "troubled teenager" character at all because of who MacComber painted him to be in the earlier books. Scott would have talked things out with his family instead of internalizing and running away.

The other two stories were good reads especially Promise Me Picket Fences but I felt that the stories moved too quickly and didn't develop characters. For example, I would have liked to learn more about Angie and about Hannah's sister Emily (who sounds more interesting than Hannah herself).

5 out of 5 stars "Born in Small Town" by Debbie Macomber.......2001-07-14

I loved this book as most of Debbie Macomber's are high on my reading list. It had a very good story line. You won't want to put it down.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story by Janice Kay Johnson.......2001-02-25

I have reread Janice Kay Johnson's story Promise Me Picket Fences over and over again. It is worth the price of this collection. The other two stories have major problems as far as I'm concerned. But Picket Fences was complete with a too-die-for hero and an endearing heroine. I enjoyed the story as well as the romance. Buy Born in a Small Town today! Janice Kay Johnson's story is lovely and makes it all worthwhile.

    3 out of 5 stars 3 books in 1.......2000-10-25

I asked for this book for my birtday, because I had read the previous six books over the summer that proceeded the first story in this book. This story was a good follow up to those books. A quick read. I enjoy Debbie Macomber, and that is the only reason I got this book. I couldn't get "into" the other two stories, however, and moved on to better books!

5 out of 5 stars Janice Johnson's Story Is Definitely Best of Collection.......2000-10-23

Debbie MacOmber's story was fine but not great. Basically, it was just an excuse to meet up with all those people from her previous books. Judith Bowen's story was also entertaining, although I disliked the theme of a heroine who disguised her appearance, then having a hero who fell for the disguise and couldn't figure out who she really was. But Janice Johnson's story definitely made up for the rest of the anthology. Her story sparkled with humor and romance. It's a must-read for all romance fans!!!

    Book Description

Katherine Taggert—nicknamed “Rusty” for her curly red hair—shines like a ray of sunshine at her aunt and uncle’s orphanage. Unaccustomed to traveling alone in the pioneer West, Rusty is accompanied on her first orphanage placement trip by the kind but reserved widower Chase McCandles.

When Chase offers Rusty a position in his stately home as a companion for his young son, Quintin, Rusty accepts. But when she realized how little time Chase spends with Quintin, Rusty’s heart is torn. How can she convince Chase that his son desperately needs a father?

And can Chase learn to trust God to help him demonstrate his love and affection for Quintin—and for Rusty?

A heartwarming story of love, trust, and family.

    5 out of 5 stars A Favorite.......2006-11-08

Though Lori Wick was once my favorite author, I find she's a bit too sentimental and sappy for me now, but this book still remains one of of favorites, and my mom's absolute favorite by her.

Rusty has liveliness and compassion enough to create just enough disruption in Chase's household when she comes to be a nanny to his young son, Quinton, for the summer, while his regular nanny takes a leave. Very well told as a much needed disturbance to get the caring but unaware, still-grieving father, a widower, to focus on his son's needs for more than materially. Rusty's fun personality balances out Chase's more sensible one, making them both enjoyable characters, and Quinton's just great. The problems in the book, such as Quinton having to adjust to Rusty's less strict, more fun personality, or Chase's realizations about his own aloof behavior, were well-placed.

I've had this book for several years, ended up giving it to someone because THEY enjoyed it so much, and I plan to get another copy, so I can have it on hand to read it again.

5 out of 5 stars Lori Wick is wonderful.......2005-10-24

I really love this book. It is one of those stories that you can't put down. Lori knows how to get your attion and hold it. I read this book with my mom and we both loved it. You should read it today.

Once again Lori Wick has written an incredible historical! I love the compassion of Katherine and the special love she has for all children. I enjoyed watching Chase grow and learn how God wanted him to care for his son. Great book!

4 out of 5 stars Full of Imagination.......2002-08-08

This book I believed to be wonderful. The love between Rusty and Chase could have been more indepth, yet for those young romantics, I find this is the perfect book. It has a pretty good ending, being the last in a series. The negative I have to
say about this book would be it is not romantic enough for me. The positive is... inumerable.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful; as always.......2002-07-28

From a younger readers point of view I adored the book. Rusty had an award winning personality and Lori played her out wonderfully. I have heard many a good word about this book from my family and friends and here I am to pass it on. Another of Lori Wick's finest.

    Book Description

On the outside, Lauren Fairfield appears the very picture of cool, contained nobility and blueblood British sophistication. Inside, however, she longs for Tom, the charming rogue she loved–and lost.

Now a sinfully handsome would–be gentleman has arrived in London–and Lauren nearly swoons when she realizes it is her Tom, grown to magnificent manhood. He has come to claim his lost title as Earl of Sachse . . .and to fulfill an oath once made by two young lovers beneath a long–ago moon, a scandalous promise no proper lady would dare honor.

Lauren could never love a staid and stifling lord, and Tom's future is the aristocracy. So she will teach him their ways before she exits his life forever. But the wildness she adored still lives in Tom's heart–and he will not rest until he proves to the proud, resisting beauty that "forever" is a promise that must be kept . . .

    3 out of 5 stars a bit of a snooze.......2007-08-28

I rate this book 3 stars and it's epilogue 5 stars. I love a good epilogue and this had the best one I've ever read. The rest of the book unfortunately was a bit boring. I read it all, didn't feel the need to skip paragraphs, but there was no tension, no conflict really. The hero and heroine were nice but maybe a bit too nice. I like my hero to be a bit cranky and rough around the edges.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic love story, worth more than 5 stars.......2007-02-13

What a wonderful love story. This was my first Lorraine Heath book, and I am now a big fan. I can't believe I actually let this book sit on my to-be-read pile for about 6 months. The story itself is a simple, tender, passionate and seductive tale of two young hearts, Tom & Lauren, that fell in love only to be separated when her family moves to England. They meet up again 10 years later, and it is clear there is still a great deal of love between them. However, they really don't know each other, as there were deceptions that kept their communications from each other all those years. During those years she never felt like she fit in, and wants to go back to Texas where women have more freedom. She agrees to help Tom learn society rules in exchange for passage to America. Tom uses it as an opportunity to get to know her again, and do they ever.

This isn't a fast paced, action packed hero-fights-the-evil-bad-man-and-saves-the-damsel-in-distress story, but it tugs at the heart and captivates you 100%. The sexual tension between these two could be cut with a knife. Tom was a wonderful "hero", and could make a girls toes curl with a simple smile or the word "darlin'". I loved him. Lauren was very likable too. She was sensible, smart and willing to do a little chasing as well as be chased by the hero. I found that really refreshing, as it seams in most romances the hero has to make all the moves and heroine is just a cardboard cutout waiting for him to make a move. I would give this book more than a 5 star rating if it was possible. It was that good.

    5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL .............2006-12-09

This love story was so great, the story going from the present time of Tom and Lauren's life to the past at how they met was well put.The way they got to know each other as adults was really like you could understand the story to be real. And finally the ending was so beautiful, that I for one was spilling tear's of joy at the love and what the words:Promise Me Forever really meant to both of them....IT's a must read....

5 out of 5 stars An unforgetable romance, just keeps getting better and better!.......2006-10-15

Another winner for Lorraine. I am not going to go through the plot since so many other readers did such a wonderful job doing it. I am just going to add; that I was always a sucker for a teenage romance that lasts forever, and this one is definitely it. The love story is spectacularly written. I agree with the other reviewer that the last few paragraphs almost leave you in tears. However a word of advice, please read Lorraine's books in order. Her website has it all outlined.

5 out of 5 stars If you believe in true everlasting love, this book is for you.......2006-09-11

When Lauren was 14 and Tom was 15 they met and fell in love. Then Lauren moved away to England. Her mother destroys the letters that Tom sends to her and that she sends to Tom, so both think the other has betrayed their love when they meet again ten years later. They quickly realize what their mother did, but both are unsure if they still love each other since both are no longer the people the other remember.

This truly is a wonderful love story of true everlasting love. When Lauren gets hurt and Tom keeps a bedside vigil at her bedside reciting to her the letters she never received it'll be hard not to get a bit choked up.

Definitely up there with some of the best historical romances around.

This book has 7 stories & 7 paintings that are just awesome. I have literally gotten a dozen of these books for gifts for new parents to be read with their child when he or she is older. I highly recommend this book for families with young children as there is a place at the end of each story for the parent to make a covenant with the child.

      PROMISE ME PASSION

Cara Williams had left a career—and a controlling fiancé—to become a fitness trainer at a health club in Washington, D.C. Then she was ready to return to the computer field, on her terms, with a software program she'd created. It looked like clear sailing until AJ Gray came on the scene. The powerful president of Capital Computer Consulting, AJ offered Cara the expertise she needed, even as his kisses triggered her worst fears and her deepest desires.

      PROMISE ME LOVE

Struck by Cara's independent spirit and beauty, AJ was more than willing to help her improve her software program. But suddenly the tables were turned, as someone began sabotaging his company's systems. Now it was Cara that AJ needed to turn to. It was Cara who would show him that theirs could be an equal partnership, based on love that was a marriage of hearts and minds.

      4 out of 5 stars Computer Love.......2005-01-23

Tired of always doing what everyone else thinks is best for her, computer guru Cara Williams becomes a fitness trainer, much to the disappointment of her father. However, after developing a software program, she decides to return to the computer field. Cara's decision is based solely on the fact that for once, she will finally get the chance to have total control. Her love life is non-existent because in her quest for freedom she also dumps her domineering boyfriend. When a dumbbell is dropped by one of her clients, it lands on the foot of the illustrious A. J. Gray, the president of Capital Computer Consulting. He suddenly finds himself being caressed, comforted and then whisked off to the gym's infirmary by Cara.

After their encounter, A. J. wants nothing more than for Cara to accept his dinner invitation. Cara on the other hand has other plans; plans that do not include him. When her best friend arranges for her to meet with a consulting firm regarding her computer software, Cara is shocked when she learns that A. J. is the owner of the company. Believing he has been given a second chance to win her affection and against the rejections of the partners in the firm, he personally takes on Cara's project. When someone starts hacking into Capital's main computer system, A. J., already overworked, is at his wit's end trying to figure out why. Knowing he will refuse her help, Cara decides to do a little investigating of her own.

Robyn Amos has penned a very poignant love story filled with romance and suspense. I thought I had figured out the hacker's identity in the first few chapters of the novel, but the very talented Ms. Amos threw in a curve ball. I thoroughly enjoyed A. J. and Cara's journey to finding true love and happiness. PROMISE ME is a well-written novel that will delight readers for years to come.

      1 out of 5 stars Didn't finish it.......2007-08-20

I'm a little confused. This book is being touted as a new release, but has a 2000 copyright. I'm thinking it was out before. Anyway, that isn't the reason I didn't like it.
Candace Camp has always been a little iffy for me. Sometimes I like her stuff and sometimes I don't. This time I didn't. I'm not a fan of the poor little girl who grows up to be a thief. She robs the people who looked down on her while she lived in the orphanage. Enter the handsome lord who sees through her widow's disguise and loves her for who she is. I don't know, but I'm tired of those stories. Most lords are going to treat her the way Daniel did. He was the other reason I didn't like this book. I prefer my romance novel leads to be unfettered. Oh, they can have some bad luck or heartache in their past, but I didn't like the baggage Marianne came with. Come on, it's a romance novel. The hero and heroine are always beautiful and we know that isn't always the case. So, make their stories perfect, too. If I want to read about some woman who was raped, I'll read the newspaper. Don't put it in a romance novel. There might be some women who don't mind stories like that, but I think there are a lot of women who want to escape into a good story and not feel depressed.
I'm sure this story had the requisite happy ending. Unfortunately, I didn't stick around long enough to read it. This book had lost my attention long before then.

4 out of 5 stars Good second book in this trilogy, 3.5 stars.......2007-08-01

This is the story of Marianne and the man she falls in love with Justin, Lord Lambeth. Marianne works as a pick pocket, she also goes undercover as a widow, and attends some of the ton's balls in order to find the ins and outs of the house, to make it easier for the others in her family to break into the house to steal, later.

Marianne grew up in harsh conditions and thus was forced after a horrible experience to leave the house were she worked as a housekeeper (she was raped by her employer's son). Now she has a little girl which she must take care of, and if stealing is the only way to give her daughter a proper and good life, then so be it. Marianne will do it to keep her daughter safe.

I thought that Justin's character needed some more depth, not enough background was given about him. I also didn't like his willingness to turn Marianne into his mistress (but of course at the time he viewed her as a thief and adventuress) and him being the son of a duke (future duke), he knew he would have to marry one of his station. It wasn't until later in the book that he realized that his feelings for Marianne ran deeper.

However Justin won me completely over when he pursued Marianne and was adamant about marrying her, even when she protested telling him of all the reasons why they couldn't be together. He didn't care that she was but a pick pocket and he a duke.

I liked how Marianne made it clear that she would not be his mistress or any other man's. But after Marianne's experience with men, I found it a bit farfetched the way she was so ready, and directly melted at Justin's kisses without any trace of apprehension, or at least some hesitation due to what she went through before.

The suspence wasn't strong in this book. However, this was a tender, enjoyable, and good love story, with flawed and yet likable characters. A good read.

4 out of 5 stars The series gets better with book two.......2004-07-31

Book one, Stolen Heart, was a good book (3 to 3 & 1/2 stars), but Camp follows it up with a better book. Although I liked Alexandra and Thorpe better than I like Marianne and Justin, the book as a whole was better, with a better-paced plot and fun new background characters. Repeat characters from book one add an enchanting familiarity and continuity.

Occasionally the rehash of events from book one are onerous if you've just read that book; readers attacking the series one after the other may want to skim over those areas. But the suspense is improved in this work.

Camp needs to work on her endings; they don't pack much wallop and leave me feeling as though something's missing. This is really a 3 & 1/2 star book for me, but it's enough of an improvement over the first one to bump it up a notch.

5 out of 5 stars Promise Me Tomorrow.......2001-07-05

This is the second book of a 3-book series. The first one is "A stolen heart" and the third book is "No other love". The characters of her books are vividly written and seemingly alive. I have read all three and this book is just incredible. The story of the series is about three brother and sisters who were separated since they were young. Will they find each other? Read the whole series and find out for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book by C Camp.......2001-01-02

Promise Me Tomorrow is an absolutely wonderful book. The storyline is great and the characters are well developed. You will fall in love with them! Once again Ms. Camp has told a story about a young lady who can stand on her own. It is so nice to read about a woman who is not weak or timid. Marianne has a mind of her own and uses it well. I don't want to tell too much of the story because I don't want to give anything away. This is definitely a must read book by a wonderful author. This is a fast-paced read that will keep you up at night until you're finished!
