5 out of 5 stars ExCeLlEnT bOoK!!!.......2007-10-01

I've decided that this is my favorite book of all time....okay, that is until I read it's sequel, "Something Blue"....

Both books are fantastic. Easy to read, easy to relate to. Not too descriptive, where some books outshine the characters and go on and on about the colors and smells... it's hilarious, but you could totally see yourself being one of the characters, if not a few of them. Personally, I related well with Rachel and had total disdain for Darcy. After I got to chapter 21 in "Something Blue", I knew I found my new best friend, Darcy to be very uplifting and real.

Giffin's natural writing style made it so easy to flip page after page and I found myself calling my girlfriends begging them to buy all 3 books so they could relate as well. I am very impressed, and now find myself impatiently awaiting the arrival of her fourth book this coming year.

5 out of 5 stars Emotion Inspiring...be it good or bad.......2007-10-01

Emily Giffin has written a tale that will inspire some emotion from you, and I'm always impressed when an author can either make me happy or angry or SOMETHING...that's what keeps you reading :-) Even as I read some of the 1 and 2 star reviews, I notice that folks are more disturbed by the morality (or lack thereof), not so much of a boring or ill-told story. Emotion - good or bad! Pick it up and see what emotion this story elicits from you!

1 out of 5 stars What does friendship mean again?.......2007-09-27

Just finished the book and really don't understand how other's liked it. There a fundamental rules you just don't break and reading this and the rave reviews made me think we'd lost sight of them. No, Darcy was not a perfect character and yes she normally got what she wanted, but is that any reason for her feelings to be stompedd on by the two people who were supposed to love her, no. I would never do this to my best friend there is not a drink in the world that could make this happen. In the middle I wanted Darcy to take over the story and walk triumphantly from both Dex and Rachel, but it appears that is just me. I don't know when being the "other woman" became liberating especially if you're hurting another woman. That's not love if you're hurting someone else that way it is the manifestation of years of jealousy. It's a shame some women dislike other women so much. Yes, Darcy could be petulant but at least she was loyal which is more than I can say for Rachel. I wouldn't want jealous Rachel for my best friend I'd take Darcy (who I could trust with my man) any day.

4 out of 5 stars The 2 books together are wonderful.......2007-09-23

I love these 2 books (Borrowed & Blue). I read a lot but this was the first time I got to read from 2 different viewpoints. They are a great summer/beach reading pair. Read them ... you will love them too.

1 out of 5 stars If you want to like the "hero" don't read.......2007-09-21

I had heard about how this was a great beach read, so light and fun to read. So I picked it up and I was appalled. The writting, well not bad...is what you would expect from chick lit. But why on earth would anyone want to read a book where the main character steals her "beast friend's" fiance. Altogether to trashy for me, even for a beach read. SO if you like you main character to have some sense of morals...don't read.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING SERIES!! IS A MUST READ!.......2006-06-24

I got the entire series this past Christmas. I had read the first 2 because although my library had more, they didn't have all of them, and they didn't have the 3rd and I don't like to read things out of order so I was really sad. So then I was soo happy to find out they were being republished by Image Cascading!!!

So yea I read them all and they all rock!!! It's nice seeing what teenagers did back in the 50's. And it was also nice how different people's relationships were with their family's, I wish it were more like that today. And they are also way more responsible and mature then we are now. Making their own money, not having to depend on their parents for everything. And their parents respect and trust them more too! And they definatly treat their parents with much respect which is ALOT more then I can say about kids of today.

The first book is about Beany's older sister, Mary Fred. It is in MF's junior year of highschool, when Beany is in 8th grade. The rest of the books are all about Beany, in highschool, college, and then when she gets married. And let me just say I LOVE who she ends up with. They are SOOO cute!!!

Everyone should read these books they are amazing and are definatly one of my favorite books ever!

He has given up the world of organized crime and is attempting to lead a clean Married life. Charles Maggiore former acting head of Detroit's Mafia has been released from prison and warned to stay out of detroit but he has scoped out a new potential base of operation in San Antonio Texas which has a weak mafia. He has tracked Pete Macklin to California and knows of his marriage, and laid out an elaborate plan to use Macklin in helping him set up his texas base. He invites Macklin to a meal and at the same time has his wife held hostage and forces Macklin who hates his guts to Asassinate two key San Antonio racketeers setting the stage for a hostile takeover in San Antonio. Pete macklin's wife was able to kill her kidnapper and Pete finds her safe at an agreed rendesvous.

5 out of 5 stars Hopefully, It Won't Be Another 10 Years Before The Next One!.......2002-05-02

This book chronicles the welcome and overdue return of Estleman's character Peter Macklin, here a retired hitman for the Detroit mob. A newlywed on his honeymoon, Macklin is spotted by an associate of Carlo Maggiore, "Carl Major", an old acquaintance and onetime target, who presses him into doing one more job. Macklin's young bride is monitored by Abilene, a pseudo-cowboy associate of Maggiore's and during the course of his duties, he lets slip who Macklin is and also shows off his own psycho tendencies, leading Laurie Macklin to attempt to slip his clutches.

The book switches back and forth from San Antonio, the site of Macklin's hit, to Los Angeles, and is very effective in building suspense, and supplying the viewpoints of several characters, including a detective transplanted to Texas from the Midwest and concerned about becoming too much of a Texan.

Macklin is a hard, tough character who previously appeared in Estleman's _Kill Zone_, _Any Man's Death_, and _Roses Are Dead_. He's reminiscent of Richard Stark's tough guy, Parker, though Parker is a thief who only kills when he has to, while Macklin is a killer, first and foremost. Hopefully, we won't have to wait another 10 years or more for the next Macklin book.

5 out of 5 stars exciting crime thriller.......2002-04-12

In his mid forties, Peter Macklin retired several years ago as a hit man and recently married the much younger Laurie. They are enjoying their honeymoon in Los Angeles when crime boss Carlo Maggiore spots Peter. Though Macklin tried to kill Carlo years ago, business is business so the mobster "hires" Peter to complete a hit that one of his thugs messed up. The fee is fifty large ones plus the safe return of his wife if he kills San Antonio bookie Johns Davis.

Peter hides what he is doing from Laurie, insisting he is going to Sacramento on business. Instead Peter goes to Texas to complete the job. Though out of practice, a hit feels like riding a bike to the retired professional. As Peter works on the details of how he will execute the assignment, Laurie realizes that her "baby-sitter" is no friend of her spouse. She knows that she must depend on herself to remain safe from this goon, while patiently waiting until Peter returns to force the truth from him.

The latest Macklin tale is an exciting crime thriller that showcases the talent of award-winning Loren D. Estleman and demonstrates why the antihero is so popular. The story line is loaded with action whether Peter is the focus or Laurie takes center stage. Though the tale fails to provide Laurie's reactions to Peter's former profession (stay tuned for that in the next novel), fans of the author, especially of Macklin, will appreciate this gratifying thriller.

4 out of 5 stars A nice, uncomplicated story........2007-04-28

Since there is no editorial review on this book here is what is on the back.

"She had everything she needed for her wedding day-except the man of her dreams...MARY, a part Cherokee schoolteacher, she agreed to marry one of the wealthiest bankers in Cheyenne, Wyoming--just to have a secure future. Until another man came along in the nick of time...LEE,to honor a friend's dying wish, he promised to find himself a wife, become guardian to a little girl, and give up his life as a lawman. And he had only three weeks to do it all...It was almost like a fairy tale when Lee appeared at Mary's arranged wedding and offered for her hand himself. Even if it was a mariage on paper only, neither could deny the attraction that had simmered between them for months...In one mixed-up wedding day, Mary had found everything she ever wanted - a protective husband and an adorable child to care for. It was all within her reach - and she wasn't about to let it go..."

This is one of the Diamond Homespun Romance series done by Diamond Books, this one in 1995. They are all very gentle, romantic books with more romance than actual physical sexual relations (although there is usually some of that, but always between husband and wife). These are usually set in the American West after the Civil War but some do have other locations for their story.

This particular book was a good read. Lee was working for the Pinkerton Detective Agency and did a lot of traveling on his cases. Lots of hopping around from Cheyenne to Washington, D. C. on trains with side trips to New York, also by train. This is not so much a "western" as a story set in the West. This is also the continuation of another Homespun story but I'm sorry to say that my records don't say what the title is. It featured David Alexander and Tessa Roarke (possibly Golden Chances or Harvest Moon). I liked this story. It moves along well, the characters are very nice people and I wanted them to live happily ever after. Not something to set the woods on fire but a gentle, sweet story. And after all, what is wrong with that? With some of the absolute JUNK some publishing houses are turning out now it is a relief to read a book you are not ashamed to have someone see you with.

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Read.......1999-05-14

Rebecca Hagan Lee is one of my favorite authors and this book is a treat from start to finish. Lee and Mary resonate like real people you'd love to know and I found myself rooting for their happy ending from the very first page. I can't wait to read Ms. Lee's next bestseller!

1 out of 5 stars ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.......2007-02-09

Miranda Lee's story "Something Borrowed" features Ashleigh who is supposed to be marrying James, who's kind and reliable, unlike his twin Jake, who broke her heart. Of course, Jake comes back and switches without telling his bride-to-be. As Borat would say, "Naaaahhhhhhccccceee!" (nice)
Susan Napier's story "Vendetta" has a woman going to an island to face a man's revenge in place of her sister. He prevents her leaving the island and tries to frighten her, threatens her, and generally romances her. Not! Where DO they come up with these ideas? Neither one of these stories is worth reading. Generally I don't give bad reviews, but life is short and you don't want this book to be the last one you read before checking out.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Three good stories, one awful one.......2001-02-15

Dianna Crawford's,"Something New", was terrible. I was offended by the tone of the story that a Jewish couple easily discarded centuries of Judaism, in favor of Christianity. If Jews at fire and knifepoint throughout the centuries have not converted enmasse, it is not plausible to believe Rachel and David would convert so easily in 1895. Today there are very few Rabbi's that would marry a non-Jew and a Jew. It would never have happened in 1895! I know that Christians believe in trying to convert people from other faiths, but I felt angry with this story. The other three stories were fine, and the co-worker who loaned me this book was surprised at my reaction. Oh well.....

4 out of 5 stars Four delightful historical wedding stories.......1999-04-11

Tying these four wedding stories together is the old bridal saying: "Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue..." I especially enjoyed Dianna Crawford's story about a young Jewish immigrant's arranged marriage to a San Francisco businessman's Christian son. I fell in love with the characters, especially the gifted and spunky heroine, who learns about Yeshua from her at-first-unwanted fiance. Also, Catherine Palmer's story about a young Scandinavian woman with an infant, who arrives in Louisiana to find her husband dead, tugged my heartstrings. How she learns to trust God and give up her memories of her homeland as she falls in love with the exuberant Cajun hero makes for an engrossing and delightful story. I highly recommend this book!

"All is safe with a lady engaged; no harm can be done." This quote by Jane Austen opens Something Borrowed, Something Blue, but for Abigail Elizabeth Duncan nothing could be further from the truth. From the very beginning when Abby's doting boyfriend buys her the antique aquamarine ring she wants for their engagement, a strange element of violence creeps in. The murder of a young woman she never knew invades her dreams and Abby finds herself entangled in a mystery that will claim her own life if she cannot solve it in time. Author Sandy Henry has combined the bright mundane of everyday life with the darkness that can lie in the human soul and the combination is a disturbing one. If you enjoy the eerie, you are going to love this book!

5 out of 5 stars Better than playing Clue.......2005-08-22

A winding, twisting tale of murder, romance, friendship, and family. Something Borrowed, Something Blue moves quickly and easily through a smart, unique story that left me hanging until the last few pages. Having read dozens of murder mysteries, this one was particulary appealing to me because it doesn't get lost in the details. Firming sticking to the story, Sandy Henry is now canonized in my short list of authors who wrote works I "couldn't put down."

Better than Professor Plum with the candlestick in the library.

    5 out of 5 stars A Swede's review..........2004-08-19

A perfect murder mystery with a touch of the supernatural, a number of possible suspects which will put wild guesses of motive in your head. Twists and turns that will make your thoughts fall apart, and some romance on top of that. What more can anyone want?
Sandy's way of describing with random details makes the characters and the scenes come alive, as well as they made me laugh in the middle of the dramatized and puzzling chapters.
The only problem with this book is that while reading it on the beach you'll forget to turn and lay on the other side in the sun. The book keeps you hooked! I wish I had Sandy's next mystery at the beach already tomorrow.

5 out of 5 stars New thriller of the summer.......2004-08-07

I love this book! I read it in a single evening. Just when you think you've figured it out Sandy adds a new twist, and the characters are off and running. Sandy is very descriptive in her writing, and she keeps you guessing until the very end.

    5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2004-07-28

This book was excellent. It was well written and easy to follow. There weren't too many characters to keep track of and it just kept your interest all the way through. I picked up the book and thought I would start reading it, but it captures you from the very beginning, I couldn't put it down until I read every last page.
