This book was highly recommended by my education professors. I am a new secondary math teacher. This book may be more valuable for lower grades, but does not translate well for upper level math students.

Julia Thompson enlightens all teachers as well as other professionals in an easy-to-read informative look at what makes for a successful careers. The first half of the book details in short sentences and checklists tools for all jobs, i.e. coping with stress, dress, and overall professionalism. The second half delves into the classroom with insight on how to prepare and also what to expect. All teachers, whether beginners or seasoned pros will find this book extremely helpful without the heaviness of most educational tomes. A must buy !

5 out of 5 stars Teacher.......2007-09-15

Fantastic book for first time teachers. It provides great insight and feedback as to how to get started and particularly how to maintain control of the classroom. One book that didn't miss anything pertaining to kids education, a book that every first time or any teacher should have in their library.

2 out of 5 stars Fluff heavy, content light.......2007-09-13

As a first year teacher I am looking for books that offer concrete advice and practical techniques to help kids learn. This book offered little of either of those, instead giving long lists of one-sentence platitudes and self-surveys with no relevance to the classroom. While this book may offer some insights for the aspiring teacher, you can find most of what's in here in other teacher prep books or just by asking other teachers. For techniques that are detailed and applicable (if a bit old fashioned), check out Fred Jones' Tools for Teaching.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Buy this book before school begins!.......2007-08-19

I could only wish I had owned a copy of this book when I began teaching thirty one years ago. Thompson handles every aspect of the teaching life with clarity, with humor, and with clear and direct suggestions. Her approach is directed enough that even a beginner can follow her guidelines, yet she offers even the most seasoned veteran new things to consider. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Hooray!!!!!!!.......2007-08-14

I work with new teachers throughout the year and this book is exactly what they need. The tips in the reader friendly book can help the first year teacher be prepared on the first day. I highly recommend this book for school divisions or for any teacher you know who is about to start their first year!

Book Description

Somewhere beyond the circle of money, glitz, drugs and controversy that characterizes professional sports in America, there exists the remnants of the ideal. In Iowa, that ideal survives in the form of high school wrestling, a way of transforming the local virtues—modesty, privation, hard work—into sporting glory. To be a wrestling champion in Iowa is to achieve greatness—individual glory where the only back to pat is your own.

For Jay Borschel and Dan LeClere, though, the stakes have been raised. Already three-time state champions in differing weight classes, each boy has a chance in his senior year of high school to do something historic—to become a "four-timer," joining the most elite group in the sport and essentially ensuring his status as an Iowa wrestling deity. For Jay, a ferocious competitor who feeds off criticism and doubt, a victory would mean vindication over the great mass of skeptics waiting for him to fail. Dan, the kid from a farm near the tiny town of Coggon (population 710), carries other burdens. For his community, for the hard-driving coach who doubles as his father, and for his own triumph over his personal demons, another title is the only acceptable outcome.

As the two boys approach the finals in a series of increasingly tense and hard-fought matches, Jay and Dan reveal the forces that drive young men through a grueling routine of early-morning and late-night workouts, social isolation, and starvation diets—and the rewards of the wrestling life. But in the finals, a victory is the only answer; blow that chance at a fourth title, before the fanatical crowds at the giant state tournament in Des Moines, and you will be little noted nor long remembered.

Four Days to Glory is the story of America as told through its small towns and their connection to sport, the way it was once routinely perceived—a way of mattering to the folks next door.

4 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2007-07-23

Good book for any wrestler who wants to understand what it takes to become a great wrestler. Well written and honest.

5 out of 5 stars Just Like I Remember It.......2007-07-12

As the father of a son who wrestled for three years in high school after being cut from the varsity basketball team, this brought back all the memories of three years of agony and ecstacy. I remember going to my kid's matches and wishing they were over before I got there so I would not have my stomach in knots every time he was out there. And this, in the Philadelphia area, was not the same level as Iowa, but nonetheless the joy and pain was identical. The author kept you on edge throughout and I had no idea how it would end until I got to the final chapter. And I have to admit my heart was pounding as the state tournament began in the book. I cannot remember the last book which made me feel that way. I, too, saw my son sitting in his room with a small cup of water by his desk every week, especially when he went from 160 to 152 for the sectionals. I was on the road when he won his first two matches and he called my after each one. I made it home for the finals and I will never forget the parade of the final contestants that night as they entered the gym on opposite sides. My joy when he pinned his man (from the host school) in the first period to win the Sectionals in 1999 will last a lifetime and my wife went down to the floor when he got on the trophy stand to take photos. He had owed some money on a moving violation with his car and I told him if he won the Sectionals I would ay the fine. It was the happiest fine I ever paid. I also will never forget the disappointment when he blew a 5-0 lead in the first round of the Districts and lost 9-5 because he was out of gas from cutting weight two weeks in a row, so much so that he dropped out rather than try for the "wrestle backs" which, today, we both agree, he certainly could have won as the guy he pinned in the sectionals actually qualified through the wrestlebacks for the regionals until he was disqualified for poor sportsmanship. That was his senior year. This book brought it all back (senior night, etc.) and I was glued to the pages and finished it in less than two days. And I love Dan Gable. Anyone who ever participated or had a son who did should read this book.

5 out of 5 stars excellent service and product.......2007-06-02

I ordered Four Days to Glory for my son's birthday. The book came quickly and in excellent condition. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Right on target.......2007-05-12

If you ever wrestled, coached wrestling, known a wreslter and watched him (or now days, her)wrestle you will twist, turn, cheer, live and die with these great athletes. You will feel what they felt. You will also get insites to the pressures of Iowa College wrestling where just being good doesn't always cut it. Mark Kreidler does what few others have done when they write about wrestling. If other writers could capute wrestling in their newspapers as he has done, college wrestling woudn't have fight so hard for it's life.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for wrestlers and their families........2007-04-13

This book is not for those who have never known wrestling, either as an active participant or an involved family member. To truly appreciate this book, one must know first-hand what goes into making a high school, collegiate or olympic wrestler. That is not something that can be learned vicariously. This is a well-written book that only makes sense to those who know what it is to experience the honest, lonely, agonizing and extremely rewarding sport. The book reaffirms everything I ever thought about wrestling -- the good and the bad. Wrestling is a sport that makes men of boys and this book clearly demonstrates that -- but only for those who already know it.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

4 out of 5 stars 10 plus day MBA.......2007-05-13

I bought this book because I am changing jobs. I will be transitioning from the public sector to the private sector.

This book provides an overview of the essentials of being an MBA. Definitions are abundant along with many concepts. The author assumes quite a bit about this reader in that 10 days is a generality regarding absorption of this material. Of course I knew nothing about what an MBA does so this book did fill in a lot of holes in that regard. I am about through the material and plan on a second reading at the least. For readers with a business background or planning on getting an MBA, most will find this book very informative.

I ran into this book once on a trip through London and I found it a great review of my MBA from a few years ago. I have sine purchased it again as a gift for friends and family.

4 out of 5 stars Troubleshooting Guide for MBA's.......2007-04-03

The Ten Day MBA is a very sharp synopsis of the tools and concepts a person will be exposed to when studying in a business school. It cuts right into the core of each topic with down to earth language and practical applications. The author makes clear what concepts are applicable and which are good to know. The intention of the author is to give a frame of reference for MBA students; it should not be considered as an in depth source for specific themes like Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Operations, Organization Behavior or Economics. This book is ideal for those who want to go to a business school and need to know the real deal instead of the filtered information in brochures and web sites. There is no hiding the hard facts that an MBA will encounter in the workplace, and the strategies shown to use effectively the tools are as valuable as the tools themselves.
The application of all the tools described in the Ten Day MBA is unlikely at any level; most people develop few of the aspects taught in business schools in their area of interest and expertise. The further research and development of topic of interest should be in the hands of the interested parties. The book then could be considered more as a trouble shooting guide for MBA's.

Book Description

'Twas the night before kindergarten, and as they prepared,
kids were excited,
and a little bit scared.

It's the first day of school! Join the kids as they prepare for kindergarten, packing school supplies, posing for pictures, and the hardest part of all-saying goodbye to Mom and Dad. But maybe it won't be so hard once they discover just how much fun kindergarten really is! Colorful illustrations illuminate this uplifting takeoff on the classic Clement C. Moore Christmas poem.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfection (With a Twist!).......2007-10-02

This will be a favorite storybook for younger children preparing for the first day at school! All over the town, there are children tossing and turning in their beds, worried about teachers, friends, leaving play and family behind, "while visions of school supplies danced in their heads."

Of course, all is well! The teacher is the best and it's the parents in the end who shed a tear or two as they leave their kindergarten scholars behind!

Kids will enjoy hearing this story over and over again! A really sweet read for parents and children!

5 out of 5 stars The Night Before Kindergarten.......2007-09-13

This was a GREAT book for children starting Kindergarten. My daughter was wondering why all the parents were crying at the end of the book. I guess you just have to be a parent to understand! :0)

2 out of 5 stars Portrays Kindergarten as a scary place.......2007-09-04

I do not recommend because it essentially presupposes that kindergarten is a scary place and that you only need to overcome your fears when entering this frightening place. That's how it seemed to me, at least.

Instead of describing kindergarten as a fun, happy, loving place, it talks about how children are at first afraid, but then learn to like it. Why even suggest that your child should be afraid?

Worse, in the book, all the parents stay in the classroom, outside the door watching. That's not how school works. The parents are not there, so why suggest that they are going to be at the door looking in during the day?

Not recommended. The other "night before" books I like, just not this one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Encouragement for Parents & Kids!.......2007-08-26

This was supposed to be a gift for a friend's birthday party which became a second gift and of course one for my very own little girl who will be entering kindergarten now in a matter of days! A wonderful, heart felt book...not too long, just right to capture the hearts and minds of parents and kids alike! Highly recommend! A+!!

5 out of 5 stars If only I had these books when my children..........2007-08-05

Another book my granddaughter loved. She starts Kindergarden this week and I bought all these books several months ago to prepare her.
Then, her school had "Kindergarden Camp" and I donated the books to their little library. The teachers were thrilled. Great book!

With the release of Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! readers young and old are afforded a dazzling glimpse into the genius of Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel. The book is based on 14 rough drawings and verses Geisel's secretary gave to the author's editor, Janet Schulman, after his death in 1991. In these scribbled sketches and scratched-out lines, we witness the Seussian process in building a story. When brainstorming the name of what resulted in the Diffendoofer School, he jots down several possible names--"William Wilkins Woofer Junior," "Woodrow Watkins Woofer," "Zoofendorf Elementary," "J. Ebeneezer Bomberg Jr."--all of a slightly different cadence and rhythm, which he tests like a composer writing a new concerto.

A small collection of Geisel's rough sketches would be plenty to thrill even the Grinchiest of readers, but there's much more to this marvelous book. Renowned children's poet Jack Prelutsky and award-winning illustrator Lane Smith were called to action by Schulman to pull these sketches into a complete story that would make Dr. Seuss fruffulous with glee. Prelutsky's delicious verse is uncannily Seussian, and it is inexplicably sensational when exploring the Diffendoofer School to discover good old Horton, a platter of green eggs and ham, and a few Whos from Who-ville scattered across the surreal and fascinating landscape of Smith's artwork. Lane and Prelutsky have gone above and beyond the call of duty, maintaining the characters and themes Geisel was just beginning to develop, but enhancing them with their own delightful stylistic stamps.

Above all, this incredible book is an ode to unorthodox, unusually creative teachers, and the innovative thinking they encourage in young minds. (Miss Twining, for example, teaches "how to tell chrysanthemums from miniature poodles.") It is a noble theme, and one that Geisel surely had in mind when he concocted these preliminary sketches. Both new Dr. Seuss aficionados and those who remember The Cat in the Hat's 1957 debut will cherish this book for its message, artwork, and poetry, and most of all, as a tribute to the man who inspired thousands of readers. (Age 3 and older)

Book Description

Started by Seuss, finished by Jack Prelutsky, and splendiferously illustrated by Lane Smith, this is the children's book publishing event of the year! Big--56 pages--and bursting with energy, here is a joyous ode to individuality, starring an unsinkable teacher named Miss Bonkers and quirky little Diffendoofer School, which must prove it has taught its students how to think--or have them sent to dreary Flobbertown. Included is an introduction by Dr. Seuss's longtime editor explaining how the book came to be and reproducing Dr. Seuss's 1989 original pencil sketches and hand-printed notes for the book--a true find for all Seuss collectors. In Hooray for Diffendoofer Day! Jack Prelutsky and Lane Smith pay homage to Dr. Seuss in their own distinctive ways. The result is the union of three one-of-a-kind voices in a brand-new, completely original book that is greater than the sum of its parts. For all of us who will never forget our school days and that special teacher, here is a book to give and to get.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars No Child Left Behind Should Read.......2007-05-21

I think Dr. Seuss makes a very valid point in this book that the writers and supporters of continual testing should read. If we do our jobs as educators, and I am one, then we teach kids and not to the test, and in the end, the kids can pass the test. I use this book for my high school students prior to taking standardized tests. I also gave a copy to my principal.

5 out of 5 stars Hooray for Dr Seuss and Friends!.......2007-01-22

A wonderful publication incorporating concepts and some rhymes of the late Dr Seuss with collage-art and further rhymes of two living artists. A tribute to both Dr Seuss and to the wonderful teachers of the world. Positive and inspiring. A great gift for that special teacher in your child's life!

5 out of 5 stars Much Impressed.......2006-03-23

Kia ora for supplying this book to Aotearoa / New Zealand so quickly. The boy who received it as a gift was delighted as we could not get it here. Noho ora mai.

5 out of 5 stars excellent motivational look at learning that can happen in schools.......2006-03-21

My brother shared this book with me a couple years ago. He enjoyed reading it with his two young kids. They loved both the school and teachers in the stories. The book highlights what schools should be about; student interest, learning, excitement, fun; in contrast to what often takes over in schools today -- tests, meaps, rules. I found it motivating and keep it on my desk at work (at school) to remind me of what's important.

5 out of 5 stars A moving book about alternative education.......2006-03-06

As someone who believes that thinking for onesself is one of the keys to successful (and happy) adulthood, this book moved me to tears. A must have for anyone who questions the traditional schooling model.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-06-30

Bought this book for my kids who are ages six and seven. Good mix of hard to find and easier to find items. We also bought I spy books for other kids that we know and they were hooked. Makes a nice gift.

5 out of 5 stars I Spy is a terrific series........2006-03-01

My husband and I have more fun with these books whether it's with our grandson or our friends. We really get into it and found that it helps our eye coordination and our memory. I would highly recommend this to anyone at any age!

5 out of 5 stars Truly a great learning book!.......2006-01-12

I find these books great mind stretchers, even for us older folks. This book especially is a learning tool because there is a page with all the letters of the alphabet surrounded by little objects that start with each letter. Another page groups things by category with overlapping categories. Really well done.

4 out of 5 stars i spy series.......2005-07-20

I love this series our daughter is about to enter kindergarten and she really enjoys finding all the items on each page!

5 out of 5 stars A lot of fun!.......2004-07-15

My ten year old son introduced me to this fun little book (OK, it's big, but thin.), which he has been looking at for several years now. It has fourteen, two-page sized pictures of a collection of odds and ends connected with school. At the bottom of each of them is a list of things that you can look for (sort of like, Where is Waldo). But, read through to the end, there is a riddle about someone you'll find in each of the pictures.

This is a fun book. It challenges the young reader to concentrate on what is actually on the page, and pick out certain select items. I like that my son reads it for fun, even as the book is teaching him to concentrate and search systematically. He loves this book, and so do I. We both highly recommend this book to you.
