Book Description
In 1939, hatred took root in South Africa, where the seeds of apartheid were newly sown. There a boy called Peekay was born. He spoke the wrong language–English. He was nursed by a woman of the wrong color–black. His childhood was marked by humiliation and abandonment. Yet he vowed to survive–he would become welterweight champion of the world, he would dream heroic dreams.
But his dreams were nothing compared to what awaited him. For he embarked on an epic journey, where he would learn the power of words, the power to transform lives, and the mystical power that would sustain him even when it appeared that villainy would rule the world: The Power of One.

"First with the Head and Then With the Heart...".......2006-11-08
There are two versions of Bryce Courtney's "The Power of One"; the original version and this, the junior novelisation. The two are quite different so make sure that you double-check what publication you're getting before you order. I would suggest the older version for most readers, since this basically tells the same story in simplified form. However, in Australia and New Zealand, "The Power of One" has reached almost cult-status in terms of popularity, and some younger readers will leap at the chance to familiarise themselves with the story before they are ready to tackle the more complex and violent subject matter of the original. Furthermore, it is a perfect choice for school libraries and/or compulsory reading in classrooms.
Like the adult version, the junior novelisation is concerned with the life of Peekay, a young boy living in 1930's South Africa, coping with racism, tension between the various social groups of the time (the Boers, the English and the Africans) and the growing threat of World War II. This younger version begins in the same place as the adult one, with Peekay being sent to a boarding school in which he is urinated on by his fellow students - a clear sign that Courtney is not prepared to soften the harshness and cruelty of the original book for the benefit of a younger audience. In comparison this story ends after the famous concert at the prison, the moment in which the adult novel really begins.
The junior novel follows Peekay's journey from childhood into earlier adolescence and the beginnings of the adult world, told in significantly less detail and in more simplified language than the first "Power of One". On the way, he makes friends from every race and class, learning the most important truth of his life: to think with his head and then with his heart. In particular, he finds work in a jail, inventing an ingenious way to help the convicts communicate with their families on the outside, and discovers the sport of boxing along with the remarkable idea that you do not have to be the biggest in order to be the best.
Courtney's gift comes from finding the grey areas in each situation, showing us clearly that one race, one country, one ideology is never wholly righteous; goodness can only come from an individual. Near the beginning of the book Peekay is persecuted by Nazi-supporters; later a dear friend of his unfairly is jailed for being a German. Humanity's overwhelming desire to classify and then judge people based on these classifications is never more frustrating than it is here, and it is a lesson well worth learning.
Although this is a more-than-adequate introductory book for younger readers eager to tackle "The Power of One", I would recommend to anyone else over the age of twelve (or any confident reader under that age) that they simply pick up the first (and best) adult version.
growing strong.......2006-02-25
how you can feel with a little boy's hardship in a boarding school and how you hope for his stamina and how you love his intense friendships that bring him on his way.
You really live with that life and that is best a book can do.
A powerful story of courage and change.......2006-01-14
If Bryce Courtenay's The Power Of One sounds familiar, it's because this represents a young reader's condensed edition of a prior hard-hitter which became both an adult classic and an acclaimed movie of the same name. It's great to see such a powerful novel condensed with youth in mind: grades 8-12 will find compelling the story of 1930s South Africa and a boy who faces apartheid and prejudice in a country where his childhood is marked by loneliness and dreams of changing lives. A powerful story of courage and change evolves.
Great Novel - but CONDENSED.......2006-01-07
I have read the Power of One, the unedited version and it is brilliant, inspiring, and brutal - one of the best books I've read. However, this edition that is being sold here, is the Young Reader's edition, which isn't immediately obvious from Amazon's description or the picture. It does say so on the cover, but it's very small unless you enlarge the picture. So, my review gives it a 2 as it may be an unpleasant surprise for those who want to read the actual novel.
A Masterpiece.......2005-12-24
I read this book before the crap movie was ever released, and it's a good thing, too. Whoever says the novel is dead needs to take a look at this. Courtenay has written a brilliant bildungsroman that you literally can't put down. You might even end up re-reading certain passages over and over, such as the boxing match between the protagonist and a Goliath-like opponent. If you have a bright pre-teen, give him this, and I bet he'll enjoy it.

Buy two, keep one and give the other to a friend........2007-07-17
My favorite book of all time - and I'm a picky reader. You will become entranced in Peekay's world and never want to leave it. This should be on every person's bookshelf and handed out to every young adult.
Other advice: rent the movie first, then read the novel and you'll be able to appreciate the book more. Also, the sequel "Tandia" is good, but not as powerful as TPOO
The ending will leave you speechless.......2007-06-30
Most five year olds feel insecure and afraid in the world, but take away a child's mother, an apparently absent father, and only a black nanny to take care of the while child in South Africa and what remains will undoubtedly be a child that quickly learns to fend for himself. The question that remains is how successful will that child be? Peekay, with a strong mind and stronger heart, proves that the Power of One can be all the power one needs to succeed.
Peekay, an English child in South Africa at the start of WWII, has everything that he knows turned upside down when he is told that his mother has suffered a nervous breakdown and he must attend boarding school many miles from home. He is the youngest student by two years and is picked on mercilessly by the older children. This physical and mental abuse causes him to wet the bed which, in turn, increases his torment. Peekay uses life's earliest challenges to form the inner strength that he will need to overcome lifelong adversity. Over the years he develops a love for boxing and his goals surround the sport. He also discovers his aptitude for academics and is brought along by friends that are unique in their quirkiness as well as loyalty.
The Power of One is a moving and highly entertaining story of a boy who will not let himself fail. The novel portrays a courage and spirit of youth that defies one's expectations given the obstacles that get in the main character's way. Supporting characters are developed so that they come alive and the reader will be unable to follow Peekay's successes without a sense of pride themselves. The last twenty pages turn the book on it's head and finish with such an unexpected shock that it will leave the reader speechless. But somehow, it is a fitting ending to a thrilling journey that is difficult to put down.
The Great South African Novel.......2007-06-18
This expertly written novel tells the story of a boy whose chance meeting with a boxer leads him to focus his life on becoming the welterweight champion of the world.
The heart of the novel is the inspiring friendships he forms with the richly shaped characters that he encounters as he grows up.
The author's ability to tell a capturing story, and the smooth way he tells it, has produced a classic book well worth reading.

An Hour! Just one short HOUR! What can the Author Dave Lakhani teach me to do in one hour?
Dave teaches you that your whole life, you very being and your futures can all be determined within how you spend a single hour. When was the last time you sat down, emptied you head of daily rubbish and focus on a task for the solid hour? No interruptions, no requests for coffee, no can you do this for me? I read the book and was astounded about just how much time I give up to help others who should know how to help themselves and all at the determent of my own success.
FEARSOME FOCUS: Remember this term as this book will coin the term and i can be sure that other books, companies and tv programs will start to use the phrase. It's an awesome book and my hat goes off to Dave and the work he has produced. Superb!

I discovered that an hour is a wonderful thing! I am so surprised at just how much I can get done when I "focus" on one project for an hour at a time. Read this book and you will be surprised at just how much work you can get done in one hour!
I now schedule my day around several "must do" projects. Each project receives an hour of "fearsome focus". The "Power of and Hour" shows me how to set up the hour for peak performance. You will love the feeling that comes from getting so much accomplished in just one hour. Put several great hours in your day and you will soon come to realize the "Power of an Hour". My productivity has sky rocketed! Yours will too!
Skyrocket your productivity!.......2007-08-24
I have to tell you I own a lot of books. In fact, I have a full bookshelf of books similar to this one but I would trade them all away for this one. If you find yourself short on time and want to maximize your success I say spring for this book. It is a road map to getting more done and having more of what you want. Frankly my original copy was a gift, since then I have purchased 2 others as gifts for colleagues.
Book Description
As all these people become publishers – and even more become blog readers – the nature of the material being produced has moved into the realms of politics, professions and consumerism. For example, “Engadget” is one of the more popular blogs, a daily review of newfangled and exciting gadgets.
Blogs and Blogging in business are relatively new, so new that there simply are no rules. If there were rules, they would be changing and evolving too rapidly to codify. The best anyone can say is “here is some advice based on what is working today, combined with a good dollop of common sense.” As a result, this topic fits the What No One Ever Tells You series format perfectly!
Despite their “newness,” blogs have rapidly proven themselves in business. They serve several functions valiantly, including: communicating with customers, potential customers, and other stakeholders, as a research tool to help uncover what is being said about you, your company, your competitors, and your industry, and even as a type of broadcast medium as some are making significant money by monetizing blog traffic through advertising and other means. Instead of offering our advice on blogs and blogging in business, in this book we offer advice from 101 people who are successfully harnessing the power of blogging.

Lots of Ideas.......2007-09-06
I've just started my blog on technology investigations called "Hack-igations". I was looking for ideas on how to make the most of my blog, and Demopoulos' book was a big help. It's full of stories about the experiences of other bloggers. The stories give me a sense for blogging culture; they help me fix realistic expectations about what my blog can and cannot do for me.
More of the same
.......2007-07-27
Unfortunately, this book is like so many books on blogging and other Web ventures:
1. It promises "insider information."
2. It's a thrown together compendium of the writings of Web marketing "gurus," most of whose only real experience is in marketing their own purported expertise in Web marketing.
3. From reading it, one does glean a few good ideas.
... and like all the others, it will be useful to those who are new to the field. To use an old saying, it's like a Texas longhorn: a point here, a point there, and a lot of bull in between.
A Great Toolbox For The Beginner Blogger.......2007-07-19
A book like this isn't about chewing through pages merely for the purpose of consuming knowledge on social networking. It's for the impassioned evangelist seeking to inspire others to action with nothing more than the seed of thought. The author has taken all these great relationships he's cultivated with winning bloggers around the world and compacted them into tiny, bite-sized chunks of expert advice. Based only on what I read in the book I've developed a blog (..) that within three weeks has attracted about 600 visitors including the attention of more than a few key industry people. And, the book is a great resource to review every once in a while to keep you focused on what works.
Worth a Quick Read.......2007-07-06
This book will take most readers about 101 minutes to read. It is designed in 101 very short chapters of about a page each. In fact each chapter it much like a Blog post. It is a series of interviews with commentary based on the author's discussions with 101 blog writers/experts. I got several ideas from it. It sent me off to the computer to find some of these bloggers. It inspired me to make a post or two. The content on podcasting is a handful of these short chapters. It is well worth a look, but it is not likely something one would read a second time.
A solid effort by Mr. Demopoulos.......2007-05-10
As a person with an interest in blogging and podcasting, this book gave me enough information and anecdotes to keep me entertained and informed.
The book uses individual stories from a diverse set of people in the industry as jumping off points for each given topic area. Grounding each theme in a real person's story provides useful context. The short chapters keep things moving without any unnecessary clutter.
If you are a techno-savvy reader, not everything in the book will be new information, but the author has probed enough nooks and crannies of the topic to unearth more than a few gems.
It's well worth your time if you want to stretch your brain in this area.

Inspiring, Deeply Educational, A Godly Masterpiece.......2007-09-06
This book has taught me aspects of the Bible that were unknown to me, as a person who is trying to learn the way to know God. Dr. Youssef is brilliant in the way he presents his lessons, combining Biblical passages with aspects of modern life. This is a must-read for anybody who wants to improve the knowledge of The Bible, as a way to develop an intimate relationship with God.

Book Description
Lose Weight with The Power of One does a U-turn on diets. This weightloss guide, written in the form of a novel, is being touted by Weightloss and Fitness Professionals as an important and exciting breakthrough in the battle against obesity. Unlike any diet, this book puts control of your eating in your hands, and not in the hands of others, by offering eight broad strategies that are formulated to be individually personalized by each reader, thus no two "Power of One" programmes are exactly alike. Each strategy is designed to be tailored to the needs, circumstances, and cravings of the reader, and to be integrated into the reader's life at the pace they choose. This is not a diet book. It is not padded with pseudoscientific jargon, graphs, charts, or recipes. In its quickly-paced, hard-to-put-down format, it is a guide that will motivate and inspire you into beginning and completing your weightloss journey. Lose Weight with The Power of One is a true return to nutritional sanity, and sets a refreshing new standard in the fight against obesity.
Customer Reviews:
This is the One!.......2006-01-29
I was looking for a motivational book to help me lose weight. Like many, I knew that a healthy diet and exercise was needed to lose weight and be healthy. I just needed the motivation to get me on this road to health and weight loss. This was the book that made the difference. I wish Stephen Moss would write more novels like this. This book was the turning point in my lifelong battle to be healthy and lose weight!
Power of One.......2005-08-09
This is an excellent book for self help. It teaches that diets do not work. But we can make small changes in our lifestyles that can create the effect we want whether that is losing weight and regaining health or discovering what we really want in life. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants more out of their life and doesn't know how to get it. This book will help get you where you want to be.
A diet book unlike virtually any other.......2005-06-12
Lose Weight with the Power of One: A Motivational Journey To Nutritional Sanity is a diet book unlike virtually any other. It opens on a simple premise... all diets fail. Some diets are based on myths (such as the "food combining diet") or even bad nutrition, and are certain to be harmful. Some diets are nutritionally sound on paper, but they effectively tell the dieter what to eat and when, according to someone else's rules - and human nature, complete with its changeable tastes, cravings, and moods, will sooner or later resist the morass of tangled rules and regulations. Instead of providing the reader with a meticulous eating plan, Lose Weight with the Power of One offers eight basic strategies for healthier eating, such as "reduce one's daily fat intake as low as possible", "eat breakfast", "do not bring factory made snacks, meals, or refined products into the home - use foods that are as close to natural as possible", and "stop eating when you are approaching feeling full". These simple tenets can promote a nutritional lifestyle revolution. Each principle, and the reasons behind it, is explained in-depth in a dialogue format that almost resembles reading a novel. In a world horribly over saturated with fad diets that ignore the basic needs and nature of the body, Lose Weight with the Power of One is an absolute "must-read" for anyone striving to make permanent, positive changes in their eating and health habits.
Doorway to the Complete Personal Trainer Package.......2005-04-09
Lose Weight with The Power of One is a highly effective weight-loss-specific tool that is being used by Personal Trainers to increase their clients' success rate. This unique weight-loss guide not only teaches the basics of weight management, but more importantly, MOTIVATES the client into adopting a new nutritional lifestyle, one that complements each clients' tastes, cravings, and ethnicity. This is not a diet book. And that is why Trainers across the US are now making it REQUIRED READING for all clients with weight issues. By discussing the book's eight simple strategies during the training session, Trainers are improving their clients' nutritional lives, expanding their own effectiveness, and enhancing the clients' fitness/nutrition experience. Trainers: Lose Weight with The Power of One is not only a must read for your clients. It is also the doorway to the complete Personal Trainer Package.

Finally understand the strategies for permenent weight loss.......2005-04-08
I wish I had thought of this concept. It's brilliant to share weight loss strategies through the tale of one woman who real woman can relate to.
Readers (male or female) will be inspired by this womans journey. She is not perfect, she has fears, she has obstacles, she has set backs and she also has hope, determination and ultimately success. You are routing for her every step of the way as you are relating to her challenges and victories.
When my clients read the the 8 simple strategies they have "ah ha" moments where things begin to click and they believe in thier ability to follow the suggestions and make postive changes.
I read the entire book on a round trip plane trip from Newark to Utah. I could not put it down. I recommend this book for all of my clients who are struggling with living a healthful lifestyle. I am currently working with 4 clients who have over 100 pounds to lose and have recommended it to each of them. Several have read it more than once.
Read this book if you want an enlighten tale with real life strategies that work.

How to move in God's supernatural power.......2007-09-12
Wow! This book really satisfies a true hunger for God. If you are looking for truth, even if it hurts, read this book. What an awesome work. This book truly is a manual for moving in God's supernatural power. The power written about in these pages are for people seeking true change, and are willing to lay everything down to bring the Kingdom of God to earth though relationship with our Lord Jesus Christ.
Becomming spiritual power brokers.......2006-12-05
This book really is chewey. Lots of people who are looking for another Christian MacBook, a quick read full of filler, will fail to take time to understand it. The book contains interviews with leaders who talk to leaders about the importance of discerning the times we live in and how the Church faces a huge clash between the powers of darkness and the power of light. The whole point seems to be this - if we Christians do not bask in the light of God's love, then radiate His love to all they meet and take His anointing into the streets, all that will be left is a vast spiritual wasteland, a habitation of the enemy. We need a global warming of our hearts towards the lost. We need to take our focus off our egos and greed and immediate self-gratification in order to move out in the love and power of God.
What is really of God, what is soulish power and what originates in the demonic is addressed in this book in a way that no other Christian writer has dared to expose. Many people are still confused by the abuses of charlatans in both the Church and in the world who scream flashy prophecies and tout miraculous healings. The book talks about a coming showdown between the prophets of Baal in the World - those who adhere to occult sources of power - and prophets of Baal in the Church...something no one really seeks to really identify or confront. It will take the Manifest Presence of God and the power of God's true anointing to confront modern Baalism. And that power is being seen as thousands of Charismatic believers are taking the healing and prophetic gifts of the Holy Spirit to the streets and winning thousands of unbelievers to Christ.
The book forces leaders to think about where they are going with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Are the gifts of healing and prophetic revelation meant for their glory or for God's glory? Should they be reserved for believers or do unbelievers need to see a demonstration of Spirit in order to accept the Word? Who is leading the way and showing us how to really seek and save the lost?
The book is for serious readers who want answers about where this present move of God is taking us, where we have come from and where we are going. It is less about the occult origins of the New Age and more about the glory and power of God to transform the world than most readers suspect until they get deeper into the book.
I am really challenged by it and I am the author. It makes me want to become one who radiates the Love of Christ and seeks to release the gifts of the spirit to everyone I meet. Those I write about in this book, not only tell me how - but model it for me so I know that it can be done.
a bit disappointed..........2006-11-10
I bought this book because Bill Johnson's name was on it...I wasn't aware that Mahesh Chavda and Bill only contributed a chapter each until after getting the book.
Much of the book had a darker tone to it and then patted the backs of several of the bigger names in the spirit-filled ministerial world. Because I've been so hungry to "learn" more about being "spirit-filled", I was hoping to find good nuggets in this book.
I think if you've encountered people who were involved with witchcraft or other "magic arts" so-to-speak, this book will really appeal to you (which i believe is somewhat prevalent in the Pacific northwest). I haven't personally encountered that so this book wasn't really for me.
Book Description
The essays in this book trace the development of Joel Migdal's "state-in-society" approach. The essays situate the approach within the classic literature in political science, sociology, and related disciplines but present a new model for understanding state-society relations. It allies parts of the state and groups in society against other such coalitions, determines how societies and states create and maintain distinct ways of structuring day-to-day life, the nature of the rules that govern people's behavior, whom they benefit and whom they disadvantage, which sorts of elements unite people and which divide them, and what shared meaning people hold about their relations with others and their place in the world.

Excellent review of state and society subject.......2006-09-29
Hegal once said "Philosophy is the history of philosophy". I have the same feeling after reading Migdal's State in Society.
In this book, Migdal masterfully presents his "state in society" theory by examining the history of State-Society study. If his theory can be reduced by some as simply the final stage of a thesis-antithesis-synthesis process (e.g. "culturalist"-"statist"-"state-in-society"), the way he establishes his theory is nevertheless exceptionally informative and eloquent. Migdal does not tell you everything about every author in this grand debate. Yet after reading his book, you will be left with a distinct impression of each author's role and position in the debate.
A must read for students of State-Society studies.

Book Description
Sometimes it seems life has nothing to send your way but storms. How can you possibly anchor yourself well enough to survive and weather these storms? You may be facing…
- a failing marriage
- an impossible work deadline
- a potential layoff
- the death of a child
- a malignant tumor
- or something equally challenging
You don't have to weather these storms alone. God promises to be with you, and He has provided you with three anchor points to help you ride out any storm. Each anchor point was planted firmly in bedrock two thousand years ago by a carpenter who claimed to be the Christ. And it was all done in the course of a single day. All done during six hours one Friday.
Those six hours were no normal six hours. They were the most critical hours in history. For during those six hours on that Friday, God made it possible for you to know that:
- Your life is not futile.
- Your failures are not fatal.
- Your death is not final.
Travel back to the foot of the cross and learn how to live in the power of the cross.

Great Book!.......2006-08-25
I loved this book and didn't want to put it down as I read it. I was so disappointed when I was done with the book. Max Lucado has a way of reaching people as he writes. It's almost like he is talking to you - a friend. You can FEEL his words and HEAR his words. I enjoyed this book very much.
A Book To Read...Again and Again.......2006-06-06
With most books, you read them, they challenge you or entertain you. You finish the book, put it your book case or donate it to a library.
Not with "Six Hours One Friday".
I purchased this book when it was initially published and read it with more eagerness, more reverence with every turn of a page.
Since then, I have re-read it many, many times. It is a part of my permanent library.
The highlight of my spiritual year is Easter. In humble preparation, every Good Friday I take my "Six Hours One Friday" and go to a place of solitude in a park with a picnic lunch, and for 3 hours (noon to 3PM) read once again what Jesus did for me!
There are no words to describe this intense spiritual event.
Always 'new', always personally meaningful, always incredibly humbling.
You'll read "Six Hours One Friday" again and again
