Wonderful Action/Military Romance.......2007-06-11
This book starts right off and goes! It was well written and nicely edited. Both main characters were likeable! Almost had a "Sleeping with the Enemy" type plot--almost. I read this book in one day. It is easy to read and follow (I like that!). There are several "things" occuring in the story. If you like military romance with alittle steam, you will like this book.

TIME TO RUN is the third installment in Ms. Melton's Navy SEAL series, and the third book I've given five blue ribbons. The books in this series are full of passion, action-adventure, and suspense, and if you haven't had the chance to read them yet, you need to pick them up today!
Chief Petty Officer Chase "Westy" McCaffrey was having a bad day when he strode into the Trial Services Building at Oceana Naval Base. It wasn't just that he needed the signature of a JAG lawyer to sign off on a case, or the fact that he'd just returned from sniper duty in a bad hot spot. It wasn't even really the fact that his stepfather was dead; rather, it was the fact that he had to head back to Oklahoma to take control of the McCaffrey land that the lazy, cruel, and insufferable man had been living on. When he sees Sara Garret, wife of infamous prosecuting JAG attorney Captain Bartholomew Garret, he's immediately struck, once again, by her skittishness. When Sara asks to meet with him only a day later, in a secluded park, he figures out why she's always seemed so nervous-Sara claims to need to escape her husband, and wants Chase to take her and her son with him to Oklahoma.
Sara Garret is a woman who, for all intents and purposes, is an abused wife. Her husband demands absolute perfection from her, and also crazy things like arranging their groceries in the cabinets in alphabetical order. When she fails at any task he's given her, or disobeys him in any way, he takes something away from her-which is why, for several months, she hasn't been allowed to drive. But Sara has been forming a plan, a way to escape. Then things boil over when her husband strangles her son's rabbit, simply for the boy playing his music too loud, and Sara knows she has to make her move.
Chase instinctively refuses to help Sara when she asks for his assistance. Later, though, he has a change of heart, and shows up telling her and Kendal to hop into his car on his way out of town. As newspapers flash stories of Sara and Kendal's disappearance and possible kidnapping, Sara and Chase realized that it's going to take a lot more than just leaving town to get rid of Captain Garret. One way or another, though, this man has to go.
When Sara realizes that she's developing feelings for Chase that are more than those of a friend, she's more panicked than ever. She doesn't have the time or the energy for a relationship, but Chase treats her differently, more like a woman, than any man in her life ever has. As for Chase, although he realizes the dangers in having a relationship with Sara, he's determined to protect her and her son from harm at any and all costs.
This newest installment in Ms. Melton's SEAL series is a heartfelt winner, and I highly recommend it. I can't wait for further books in the series!
Short but good!.......2007-01-23
This was my first book by this author and I am pleased to say, I wasn't disappointed. The characters were well defined, their chemistry seemed real and the story was entertaining. My only complaint would be that it was a little short and wasn't as fast paced as it could've been. Sara and her son were running away from a long mentally abusive relationship and I hoped that the end for the villain was more thrilling but like I said, it was still a good book and I look forward to more!
Only if you REALLY need something to read...........2006-12-15
This book was a disappointment to me. I am a huge fram of Suzanne Brockmann, and thought that a SEAL book by Melton may compare... but boy was I wrong! This book was slow, painfully so... The heroine is painfully incompetent while the hero is just okay. It wasn't a terrible book, but if you a looking for a substitute for Brockmann you need to look elsewhere.
Good, but . . . .......2006-10-25
This was a page-turner for me; however, there were some eye-rolling events too. I wasn't caught up in the story and the flaws kept niggling.
The final one was when the heroine is fleeing the villian, and she first turns onto a deserted highway instead of into the town and help; THEN when she has a police helicopter following her, she faces a fork in the road and TURNS INTO A WOODS where the helicopter can no longer see her! My first thought is this person is too stupid to live.
Other than the unbelieveable parts of the story, I liked it and will attempt another of this author's books. But the story is not of the quality of Suzanne Brockmann, where I'm unaware of any weaknesses in the story line.

A Step beyond Asset Allocation and Annual Rebalancing.......2007-02-24
For all of us that are interested in taking a more active role in our investments, the processes in this book are a good next step. There is a rare balance of acceptance of risk and potential gain in the author's suggested quarterly re-allocation method. The method is not a "read the market" approach, which virtually no one can do consistently, if at all. It is rather a method to use recent fund performance as a purchase / reallocation guideline for short periods of time (as in quarterly). It is definitely not for everyone, because of the quarterly attention required. A very good incremental step in a maturing investor's education.
Important Investment Guide for the Novice and Expert alike.......2006-11-27
Being a financial advisor, I've come across books that range from the very basic to the ridiculous.
Appel's book, although more conventional then his previous titles, lays out a comprehensive, although extremely practical and relevant strategy for 1) understanding how the markets both stocks and bonds work and 2) giving the investor various options to use that although do involve time and some monitoring, provide a solid blue-print step by step guide that will allow them to more intelligently invest with their hard-earned assets while reducing risk where possible.
Moreover, the combination of fundamental and technical analysis in security selection allows the investor to capitalize on both areas of the market that are affected by emotional factors (external events) but also takes advantage of proven technical and analytical strategies that in the long-haul will give the investor above market gains.
Highly recommended.
Practical Investing Guide for Self-directed Investors.......2006-11-07
Gerald Appel is a well-known author, technical analyst (and developer of the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator) who has written a practical guide to investing while dispelling a number of Wall Street myths on along the way. His book's purpose is to help readers who have limited time on their hands become active intelligent investors, as well as to help those individuals who are willing to put in more time and effort.
In the book, Appel covers specifically which vehicles to invest in, the timing of the buys and sells, and how to construct a portfolio that is diversified and balanced based on the individual's age and financial situation. Throughout the book, he stresses the importance of active, informed, self-directed investing instead of the out-of-date and risky buy and hold approach which "may or may not service investors purposes in the future."
The author suggests that investors focus not only on the U.S. stock market, but also on the overseas markets. He recommends investing in U.S. stocks, bonds, and money market instruments, as well as the more unfamiliar foreign bonds and stocks, real estate, and investments in foreign countries.
Appel kicks off the book covering the myth of why buy and hold is not a risk-free investment strategy compared to active management. He shows that by using a few indicators such as the NASDAQ/NYSE ratio, direction of interest rates, public sentiment, and the Best Six Months Strategy (buy at end of October and sell in May and go into cash until next October) that investors can reduce their risk and obtain decent investment performance. For example, by using the NASDAQ/NYSE relative strength ratio with a 10 dma crossover signal, according to Appel it is possible to beat the market's performance with about half the risk.
In another chapter, the author compares three diversified mutual fund portfolios showing how different market segments work well together to reduce risk and improve returns. He covers the basics of how to select the best mutual funds by providing the most important characteristics to consider for the long run. Furthermore, he illustrates how to pick funds that are in the top decile of performance.
Appel devotes a separate chapter to income investing suggesting short-term bonds with high credit ratings, and current interest flow. In a section on maximizing safety he mentions T-bills, money market accounts, and setting up a bond ladder with wide diversification. He also reviews what to focus on for maximum potential returns, as well as balancing risk and return. A follow-on chapter reviews the keys to securing junk bond yields at Treasury bond risk levels. Another chapter reviews investing in REITs while another covers investing abroad using open-end and closed-end funds as well as ETFs.
Appel favors ETFs as a new way to invest replacing the typical mutual funds. He contrasts the pros and cons of ETFs, the different ETF categories, and how to create and maintain a diversified portfolio. He provides three specific sample portfolios for different types of investors.
The author's market timing approach encompasses both fundamental and technical analysis. On the fundamental side he reviews the P/E ratio, bond yields, earnings yields and provides guidance on how to interpret the readings. On the technical side, he discusses the four year and presidential election market cycles, advance decline line, and new high new low breadth indicator.
Overall, Appel provides readers with a time-tested practical approach to take control of their investments. For those readers that prefer investing using their own skills this book will provide and excellent plan for moving ahead and succeeding.

No training plans included.......2005-09-04
I picked up this book after reading Higdon's training plan's online.
The book is mostly a collection of phrases and anecdotes. Granted, Mr Higdon has run successfully for a long time, but there's very little new advice here.
He outlines, in many way, the way he approaches speed work.
But after I read it twice, the only thing I can remember is "don't do too much speedwork" and "vary your training".
I was expecting more advice on form and specific speed workout plans, but I have to look elsewhere.
I think your running will be better if you do it with correct form. But after reading the "other" runner guru Jeff Galloway's book and this one, I can safely say that they don't discuss form that much.
One chapter talks about stretching and drills to improve flexibility, which I found interesting.
The front cover says "training plans for 5K, 10K...". That's not true. There are no training plans in this book. Find them online instead.
I suggest ChiRunning by Danny Dreyer if you want tips on better form.
Terrific For Beginner or Intermediate Runner.......2002-03-24
This book touches on training techniques generally for all races under a half marathon. It includes advice to keep a runner injury-free while improving times in the shorter races.

Gal, know's her stuff.......2007-05-14
I have two jobs and I travel 3 to 5 hours a day for work. Oh, yes I am "On the Run". The Author gives some GREAT insight into making small yet very powerful changes to help me make better food choices. I am very glad I have her book and I would recommend it to anyone else who does not like to cook, is always on the run and has very little time to dedicate to meal preparation. The Author hits a Home-Run... She did not get 5 out of 5 because that would mean the book was perfect and come on what book or anything is truly perfect? Great Job ! ! !
Outstanding resource!.......2007-03-09
As a person who finds it hard to fit in meals between appointments, I found this book to be an outstanding nutritional resource. Tribole really packs this book with helpful comparison charts, such as comparisons of energy bars (please expand!), best bets in frozen cuisine, and brand-name snacks. The "one-minute specials" recipes, grocery shopping tips, and fast-food best bet chart were also extremely welcome. There is a section for weight-loss too, though it doesn't take over the book, which is broad in scope for all readers to enjoy. In fact, this is the most practical book on nutrition for busy people with real lives that I have seen. I highly recommend it.
I rarely recommend a book, but I must now!.......2001-07-27
I rarely recommend a book, but I'm feeling that I must now! The book is called Eating on the Run by Evelyn Tribole. This book brings weight management down to its barebones--you learn what your body needs as basic nutrition, how to eat and feel satisfied, the problems with diets and vitamins and how they can hurt you, dispels myths, and how to apply good eating habits efficiently w/o trading taste or satisfaction. You know me, I LOOOOOVE food but I'm just not much of a cook. And like everyone else, I'm just trying to figure out how to take care of my body.
This isn't a cookbook, but there are several recipes throughout the book--many and enough to have you up and going with good eating habits. Since it is geared to busy people, it's an easy, straightforward read that really helps you to understand weight management and how to apply it. In other books, I usually learn a lot then forget it because it just isn't realistic.
The author has a regular column (Recipe Makeover) in Shape magazine, is the spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, and qualified for the 1984 Olympic marathon event. Therefore, she has the credentials.
So, in my most sincerist verve, I totally recommend reading this book as a way to change eating habits and understand weight management for yourself.
Tribole books are GREAT!.......2000-04-05
Just read the Syndrome X book and found this to be an invaluable nutritional source for those professionals on the go who care about their health.
Book Description
More than any other sport, baseball has been identified with Americaits values, dreams, lessons, and losses. Most of all, baseball is connected to the American childhood. In Before the Glory, the games living legends, maverick players, and stars of today tell the stories of their childhood and coming of age with the innocence and candor of youth. From Bill Mazeroski growing up in a shack without heating or electricity, to Ron LeFlore becoming addicted to drugs at the age of twelve, to David Wright winning a food-fight in the school cafeteria, Before the Glory is not simply baseball, it is life. It is poverty, segregation, innovation, integration, survival, war, peace, love, hate, villains, and heroesall as seen through the eyes of everyday children who happened to have the desire and ability to rise to the top of Americas greatest sport. Hall of Famers, retired MLB players, and current stars, including David Wright, Justin Morneau, and Brian Roberts agreed to be interviewed especially for this book and share, in their own words, their perspectives on the challenges of childhood, family life, and reaching goals. This book is an inspiration to young and older fans alike. Foreword by Brooks Robinson. Includes an 8-page color insert.

great stories.......2007-08-30
this is delightful reading. There are stories told by the subjects -- and some of them are great story-tellers -- then narratives by the authors summing up each subject's life and career.
This is certainly inspirational in the sense of overcoming obstacles, but it isn't icky. The obstacles include racial prejudice, poverty, health, etc and the subjects range from long-retired players (Mudcat Grant retired after the 1971 season) to current ones (Juan Pierre). The lessons are really aimed at the young adult audience, but as an adult I am enjoying it also.
A fun read!
Inspirational Stories for All Ages.......2007-07-03
This book was great fun and appeals to baseball fans of all ages.
It comprises 20 true life stories of baseball players (and one executive) from various eras, allowing the reader to jump around if he chooses selecting to read first the stories of players he remembers best. You really get a sense of each player's personality, making it a quick and fascinating read!
Excellent Read.......2007-06-08
This book is one of the greatest books I have read in a while. I could not put it down once I started to read it. I recommend this for all people, especially baseball fans! Each Chapter is exciting and worded just perfect. All in all, this is a fabulous read and an all-around good book!!!
A Worthy Successor to an Earlier Classic.......2007-05-05
Amazing what the authors coaxed out of their interview subjects. Baseball greats like Whitey Ford share childhood memories likely never before committed to print. In the case of some, like Ron LeFlore, they're not just memories, but admissions.
Since the players covered range from Hall of Fame greats to today's stars, there's something for fans of all ages. My son is consuming this book as fast as I am.
In fact, "Before the Glory" walks in the Sasquatch-sized footsteps of one of baseball's first great classic books: "The Glory of Their Times: The Story of the Early Days of Baseball Told by the Men Who Played It" by Lawrence Ritter (published in 1966). It was an oral history of the likes of Rube Marquard and Smoky Joe Wood.
I wouldn't be surprised if "Before the Glory" comes to occupy the same cherished place in readers' minds as "The Glory of Their Times" did in mine. A great gift for any young baseball player -- as well as yourself.
Book Description
This is a survey of recent developments in the field of cointegration, which links long run components of a pair or of a group of series. It can then be used to discuss some types of equilibrium and to introduce them into time-series models in a fairly uncontroversial way. The idea was introduced in the early 1980s and has generated much interest since then amongst econometricians and macroeconomists. The authors discuss the basic ideas in their introduction, and the final chapters review the most recent developments in the field in a non-technical way that will enable economists with some training in modern econometrics to understand and appreciate these developments.

Good; but not overly deep.......1999-12-19
Good for group or individual study; but not too deep. Questions are rather obvious (basically they all boil down to--what does this verse say?). However, it will motivate you to look deep into the lives of Bible characters and learn life lessons from them.
