Book Description

Do you feel like you are too nice?

Sherry Argov's Why Men Love Bitches delivers a unique perspective as to why men are attracted to a strong woman who stands up for herself. With saucy detail on every page, this no-nonsense guide reveals why a strong woman is much more desirable than a "yes woman" who routinely sacrifices herself. The author provides compelling answers to the tough questions women often ask:

-Why are men so romantic in the beginning and why do they change?

-Why do men take nice girls for granted?

-Why does a man respect a woman when she stands up for herself?

Full of much-needed advice, hilarious real-life relationship scenarios, "she says/he thinks" tables, and the author's unique "Attraction Principles," Why Men Love Bitches gives you bottom-line answers. It helps you know who you are, stand your ground, and relate to men on a whole new level. Once you've discovered the feisty attitude men find so magnetic, you'll not only increase the romantic chemistry in the relationship-you'll gain your man's love and respect with far less effort.

4 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD!!!!.......2007-10-03

This book was funny and very true. Bottom line-when you treat men like crap, they treat you better. I don't think its for everyone though, some people are just too nice and probally wont be able to handle some of the advice that the author gives. This isn't a bible, just a guide and a very good guide at that.

2 out of 5 stars Men vs. Women?.......2007-10-03

I bought this book a short while after getting out of an abusive relationship, thinking it would help me hold my own in any future relationships so the pattern of abuse wouldn't continue. This idea, however, backfired. What I found myself doing while reading this book was getting more and more angry at men.

I understand that women do need to stand up for themselves in all areas of life. If anyone understands this, it's me. I don't, however, believe that it's a good idea to get embroiled in the battle of the sexes. I'd like to believe that not all men are bad, and that I can be happy in a future relationship without having to resort to any tricks or manipulation.

While this book has some good advice (i.e., go out instead of waiting by the phone for him to call) I certainly wouldn't recommend it to anyone who has any resentment towards the opposite sex. There are some great books out there which are more healing, and less damaging. Try anything by Kathryn Alice or Kathy Freston, for example. I also recommend "Make Every Man Want You" by Marie Forleo.

Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars A very thought-provoking and helpful book.......2007-09-18

I just finished reading this book, and am in the process of reading her other book, "Why Men Marry Bitches".

I have to say that initially, like some other reviewers here, I was reluctant to read the book due to the title and the simple fact that I don't have much respect for so-called "girl guides". I agree that the title does a disservice to the book, although after having read it, I understand what the author means when she uses the word "bitch". I was afraid that this would be a book about being aggressive and demanding, but that is not the case at all. I am also an independent woman who is emotionally mature, but I must confess I have behaved too nicely many a time. If you read this book, please understand that it is meant to be humorous. Don't follow everything blindly (especially some of the jokey and outrageous advice). Use your own thinking. Like some people here, I don't think you should serve your date popcorn on the first date. But this doesn't 'mean that her advice isn't sound; she exaggerates of course, but what she means is, please don't bend over backwards for someone you barely know. I read some reviews here who claim that this book is about playing games, or that it says things that are too obvious, or that it teaches women to be abrasive. If you actually read the book you will see that she insists that a "bitch" is a woman who is nice, polite and gracious. She never, ever advises bitching and complaining; in fact she devotes a whole chapter to precisely why these tactics never work for women. Some negative reviewers insist that the book tells you to be someone else, and that you should be honest and open about what you want in a relationship. I completely agree with the latter; however, the book tells you to do the same thing. It shows you how to communicate with men on their level, without being too emotional; how to make them listen to you and how to get your point accross, and I repeat, NOT through bitching and complaining, but by presenting strong, logical arguments in a calm and rational manner. Surely this can only promote good communication?

I can understand some viewers' hesitation about the "tactics" that she describes, like boosting a man's ego from time to time. I used to think, why should I boost anyone's ego? If he puts up a shelf and the damn shelf is crooked, why should I praise him? Or better yet, I'll do everything myself. The truth is, you need to praise and acknowledge his effort. Women fail to do this and then we wonder why "there are no real men left in the world". The truth is, for a man to show his generosity, you need to let him do it. Men have sensitive egos (they may deny it but we all know it's true). You put him down once or twice, he'll give up trying and you'll be putting those shelves up yourself for the rest of your life. If that's what you want, fine. But normally it's not, so you start complaining that he never does anything for you. This is how the vicious circle starts. After having read the book, I understand this better. So what if a shelf isn't perfect. You can still thank him for the effort and be tactful about it. Just don't criticize him when he's feeling all proud and manly. Don't criticize him in front of other people. It's basic consideration and common sense, of course. We women like being given presents and flowers, and being paid compliments. Men also like being appreciated. This is only logical. If you are having one of those "ugly" days, the man who truly loves you will say something encouraging, like "you look beautful, and you are always beautiful to me". He will sense your vulnerability and show his support. You do the same for him. Both are white lies; you don't always look beatiful, and he doesn't always succeed in home improvement. But you want him to keep trying, and you encourage and support him. I don't see how this is could be detrimental to any relationship.

Finally, upon having read this book (and her second book which I most highly recommend), I feel a newfound appreciation for men. We women always puzzle over the things men do and often feel like men just don't get it. Well, the truth is, they do get it. They observe you and draw their own conclusions. They will test you to see your reactions to different situations, just as you will test them. You may call it playing games, or dislike it, but no matter what you think, this is normal behavior. We all test each other to a certain extent, consciously or unconsciously, depending on our individual insecurities and preferences. If you fail to acknowledge this simple fact, you fail to acknowledge reality.

I think that this book is not your typical "relationship" book. It doesn't teach you how to "catch" a man, or win him. It teaches you how being a self-sufficient, independent, gracious and considerate person will help you attract the right man and more importantly, will keep him interested and focused on your relationship. Please read this book and you will see that the author doesn't condone games; what she does is help women understand men better and learn to communicate with them better. If becoming a woman worthy of respect (your own and other people's) means you must change yourself, then of course you must, otherwise you will never grow as a person. If you don't respect yourself firstly and foremostly, how can you expect other people to respect you? You would think that this is self-evident, but obviously, looking at the world today, it's not. Sherry Argov's book was written to change that.

5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE!.......2007-09-12

Its every womans must have bible! Hide it under your mattress...not necessarily a coffee table friendly book unless its girls night. This book has saved all of my future relationships! Best kept secret since He's just not that into you. Loved every detail of the book and her sense of humor keeps you reading all throughout the night!

4 out of 5 stars This book helped MY confidence.......2007-09-08

I resisted this book for years simply because of the title. To be honest, I feel that the author does a huge disservice to herself by using the word "Bitch" in her title. My first instinct was to immediately reject this book because by nature (and as my friends will attest), I'm known as my very positive, easy going, sweet, and loving individual. I try hard to be considerate of everyone around me (male or female), and quite frankly, I shy away from the negative bitch types that I come across in real life. I was also tired of all those dating books which told you what to do and what not to do in the dating world. They silently infuriated me because I didn't want to live my life against a list of actions to do and avoid.

However, after receiving an effusive recommendation from a close friend of mine (who's also a very positive person), I decided to throw away my caution read this book and it has quite literally changed my outlook on life.

Let me first clear up a misconception that was my own: This book does not tell women to change themselves in order to get a man. It does not tell you to be negative, house an attitude, or think that you're better than the world around you. The simple message I came away with after reading this book was that you must BELIEVE in yourself and your unique characteristics, and that in turn, will draw in the RIGHT man for you.

My biggest problem in the dating world was my confidence and this book helped me recognize this. Like so many women in their early 30s, I really wanted to be in a relationship and when a guy would show me attention, the first emotion I'd feel after the initial excitement was an anxious one. My pride aside, I quite frankly saw him as my "savior from the loneliness single world" (since so many of my friends were getting married), and I wanted to do everything in my power to keep him.

And what I'm discovering is that this attitude is exactly what will push him away!!! And trust me, it has in the past!

This book has taught me to repeat to myself the following adage: "This is me in all of my splendor...and it doesn't get any better than this". It sounds corny yes, but I saw a mantra close to this whenever I feel nervous/anxious about being single and it builds up my own self-worth and this in turn draws guys in. Because you know what? It's not about going out there and finding a man...it's about being happy with who you are, and if a man comes along that adds to that happiness-then so be it. It's so incredible freeing because it teaches you to love yourself for all you have. That a man isn't important, and ironically--that attitude in and of itself will serve to DRAW all types of positive people to you (and quite possibly a guy you connect with.)

This review is getting way too long, but that is the gist of my feelings of this book. Is this book perfect? It's not--and that's why I gave it Four stars. There's a section in there that encourages you to cater to his ego by playing the "Dumb Fox", and while I understand what the author is saying, she does go a bit over the top when she suggests never killing a bug or changing a light bulb for fear of emasculating your man. LOL! If it took an independent woman to attract a man, then it will take one to keep him. Show him that you don't NEED him to survive (I can change my own light if you're gone), but that you don't mind moving aside and allowing him to take the limelight now and then to massage his ego (and he does the same to us!)

Book Description

Knitting is hot, with 4 million newcomers in the last few years joining a core group of 38,000,000 knitters nationwide. And these are primarily young, creative, connected chicks with sticks who are coming together in living rooms, knitting cafes, and chic yarn stores, and making everything from funky hats to bikinis.

In Stitch 'n Bitch, Debbie Stoller-founder of the first Stitch 'n Bitch knitting group in New York City-covers every aspect of knitting and the knitting-together lifestyle: the how-to, the when-to, the what-to, the why-to. Writing with wit and attitude (The Knitty-Gritty, Blocking for Blockheads), she explains the different types of needles and yarns (and sheep, too) and all the techniques from basic to fancy, knit to purl to cast-off. She also shares her special brand of corrective surgery for when things go wrong, and offers fun and informative sidebars on such topics as how to find the best yarn for less, how to make a buttonhole, knitting etiquette, and what tools to keep in your knitting bag. At the heart of the book are forty stylish patterns: Alien Scarf, Big Bad Baby Blanky, Mohair Hoodie, Kitty and Devil Hat, Cell Phone Cozy, and Wonder Woman Bikini. And for anyone interested: how to start a Stitch 'n Bitch group.

5 out of 5 stars Excited about Starting.......2007-08-13

One Friday I had the overwhelming need to learn to knit; go figure!?! The title intrigued me and the repeated praise of others convinced me. I adore this book because Debbie was an adult when she perfected her knit, which gave me hope for myself. Debbie's style of writing makes me feel as if she is sitting across from me casually answering my questions and soothing my concerns. I said it before and I really mean it,I adore this book!!

5 out of 5 stars Love It!.......2007-06-27

I checked this book out of the library initially. When I found myself resisting returning it, even when others were waiting for it, I figured it was time to buy. This is a great resource for a beginner like me and contains at least 10 projects I'd like to make.

5 out of 5 stars how i learned to knit for the 4th time..........2007-05-26

I made the attempt to knit four times in my life (between the age of 9 and 24). Finally, at 24, it took thanks to Stitch 'n Bitch. The explanations are amazing clear, and the pictures/drawings are very helpful. Plus, it helped me find the current Stitch 'n Bitch chapter in my area! Through that, I was able to meet other women my age (very helpful after a recent move). Buy this book!

Book Description

Not your typical boring diet book, this is a tart-tongued, no-holds-barred wakeup call to all women who want to be thin. With such blunt advice as, "Soda is liquid Satan" and "You are a total moron if you think the Atkins Diet will make you thin," it's a rallying cry for all savvy women to start eating healthy and looking radiant. Unlike standard diet books, it actually makes the reader laugh out loud with its truthful, smart-mouthed revelations. Behind all the attitude, however, there's solid guidance. Skinny Bitch espouses a healthful lifestyle that promotes whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and encourages women to get excited about feeling "clean and pure and energized."

3 out of 5 stars GOOD ADVICE, HARD TO APPLY.......2007-10-10

Dear Potential Reader:

The authors of this book know what they are talking about. They have done extensive research into Vegan diets, the practices of the Food & Drug Admin. and other regulatory agencies, and mondern trends in nutrition. If you follow their advice, you will drop a lot of weight and be healthy.
Easier said than done. I'm a prosecutor and in and out of court all day. I rarely have time to prepare complicated vegitarian meals. In a perfect world, I would do everything they say - but most of us just can't. I will say this - they have convinced me of the horrors of artificial sweeteners and diet soda. I have stopped buying them. Also, I have basically cut out dairy - on their advice. Their arguments about the harm of these two things are too logical and articulate to ignore. I have lost 9 pounds. Susanna Shea, Memphis, Tennessee.

5 out of 5 stars The Best "Cynical" Book Ever.......2007-10-10

This is book had me laughing out loud on the 1st page I read.... I couldn't put the book down. I think any average lady can relate to this boook, it is worth taking the time to read. It isn't a very long book so it doesn't take much time to read...

4 out of 5 stars Much more that a diet book - says it all about what you eat.......2007-10-08

I was impressed - when I bought the book, I thought I would be entertained by advice like "do not eat after 6 pm", "have a diet drink for breakfast", !put a picture of a skinny model on your fridge" etc. Instead I was confronted with the harsh reality of how our food is produced, the horrors of massive industrial animal farming, the presence of chemicals and pesticdes in our vegetables and fruit etc. The book is not happy because it tells the truth - and this is its highly educational value. If you would allow me one criticism: you do not propose solution for those who do not want to go for a fully vegan diet and want to opt for real biologically produced cheese or meat produced in an animal welfare friendly manner. You have to start with a step by step approach to change the world - extreme solutions can be scary to the average person and can thus alleniate them from the suggestions you make. Well done to the authors; you create awareness. I am sure that many of yoru readres would have never learnt about food producaiton had they been not been attracted by the funny and catchy cover of your book.

4 out of 5 stars Get over it, people, it's a good book!.......2007-10-07

I've been vegan for over a year now and I can honestly say I've never done a better thing for my body. I grabbed this book on a whim to see what it had to say about vegetarianism/veganism and was pleasantly surprised to see that was the main focus of the book. Forget the bad language and insults, people-- it's just a marketing strategy (and, judging from the fact this is a New York Times bestseller, an effective one). It's not like they were talking to YOU. Sheesh. Anyway, I don't agree with some of what they say (like fasting). But still, most of the information in there is very good. When it comes to health, I say learn about EVERYTHING to do with nutrition and the food industry and MAKE DECISIONS FOR YOURSELF. You don't have to blindly follow this (or any) diet/lifestyle plan. Read this with an open mind and you'll definitely find ways to improve your life.

5 out of 5 stars These bitches really know their stuff.......2007-10-06

At first I thought this would be just another diet book. Oh no!! These bitches (and yes, they are skinny) did their homework. Although I don't agree with everything they said, they sure brought up a lot of things that made me think - and even more that made me laugh out loud! WARNING: If you gasp at the sight of swear words typed out, then you may not appreciate the humor here. It's blunt. It's raw. But it's also freakin' hilarious! These gals will motivate you to change the way you eat, even if you don't end up a vegetarian like they are. The back of the book has the usual lists of foods to eat and sample menus. Some of the dinners are the typical....brown rice and lentils (yawn) but then for breakfast the next morning......a s***load of cantaloupe! This is definitely not your mother's diet book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-10-06

A must for every woman who is dating and one day plans to get married!! Great insight!!

5 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny.......2007-09-22

This is a laugh-out funny, insightful book about men...as well as women. Despite the catchy title, this is NOT a book that tells you to play mind games or teaches you how to land a husband. It actually challenges the notion that anyone needs a relationship to feel complete. In addition, it reaffirms what most of us already know---men are turned off by clingy, needy and insecure women---the same qualities that most women find unattractive in men.

The book lists 75 relationship principles as well as practical advice on every day situations, and they do work! The advice on how to handle a relationship that isn't progressing is outstanding. All my guy friends are crying "foul," now that the secret is out.

Bottom line: Get it, read it and enjoy it. You'll get some good laughs out of it, and also several "ah-ha" moments.

5 out of 5 stars Learn to maintain the right attitude to attract men..........2007-09-10

This book is an important book for women who worry allot about getting married. It gives a much-needed push out of the `needy' frame of mind into an independent, in control woman. This not only frees you from obsessing about success with men but it also ends up making you more attractive to men.

One thing I really like about this book is that it is in point form (called principles), with insights into the psychological aspects of men, women and relationships. This is followed by examples which illustrate the points clearly.

To give an idea of the kind of IMPORTANT principles you will learn I have taken a couple of good ones from the book which reveal how different this book is from others on the same topic of `how to get a man'.

Take the following principle as an example, "Men are intrigued by anything they do not completely control". Applying this insight means you maintain your independence including keeping yourself occupied with friends and activities. This will make a man more attracted to you as he has to chase you a bit and you are not too available. This explains the following principle really well, "There's nothing more prized to a man then something he had to wait for, work for, or struggle a little bit to get." It is the challenge that inspires a man. So become a challenge and men will seek you out.

Most important is to SHOW you don't need a man in your life like shown in this principle, "When a man sees you are focused on your own dreams or on elevating yourself, he feels safer marrying you because he doesn't worry about what you'll be trying to take away from him."

Besides these wonderful insights on how to attract the attention of a man there are also insights on how to build your own self-esteem and how to occupy your time without needing a man around. This book helps you from the inside out with tons of tips and advice on how best to date men. This book is definitely worth reading, even if you already have a man in your life.

5 out of 5 stars A man's view.......2007-08-31

Her previous book -Why men love bitches is my favorite and most highly recommended book for women on dealing with men. Keeping us men on our toes. Giving us women that we find challenging, and interesting, and donot take for granted.

Now onto WMMB. Men will test you, just as women test men. These tests serve a purpose. How you respond dictates the nature of the relationship, and whether get respected as the dreamgirl, or treated as a doormat. You teach people how to treat you. Sherry teaches you how to pass these tests.

WMMB entertains, as you might expect from a standup comic. I had to put the book down several times to laugh. Most of her advice is gleaned from many interviews with men, and their experiences with women, and they tell it like it is, what made them decide to marry one person and pass on another. Really, it is our secret playbook. In fact, I got great ideas from this book. So, I recommend this book to men too.

For men, marriage is the biggest financial and emotional decision of our life. If a man makes the wrong decision, and chooses the wrong woman, the financial and emotional consequences are dire.

The right decision, gains him the benefits of an excellent partner and children and opportunities for adventure and bliss, and will inspire and propel him to far greater achievements than would otherwise be possible. Imagine how attractive being independent, emotionally secure, confident, and already fulfilled can make you, and how not being needy or dependent on him for your emotional well being could make you a compelling candidate for marriage.

As you read this book, you will discover the common mistakes women make: the woman on a mission whose biological clock is ticking so loud you can actually hear it, perceiving the man as a vacancy filler, telegraphing commitment interest way too soon, the dreaded talk, the absolutely lethal -where do you see this relationship going question? Sherry's offers solid advice.

What if the guy is not prepared to commit anyway, then you have the dilemma of losing a relationship or continuing with a guy who won't commit. Many guys will string you along indefinitely, because they can.

The most resourceful advice is starting the conversation which will lead to commitment though it only offers one strategy, even if it is brilliant. You should have a few different approaches to pick from.

I disagree on one thing. I don't think it is a sound strategy to avoid talking about marriage entirely, for a long time, so it won't come up on the relationship radar. If you don't bring it up it may never come up. Before you spend years with a guy wouldn't it be wiser to find out in advance what his attitude is? This could bring the denial: You never said anything about a commitment before. Another shortcoming I feel is it does not offer strategies for testing his true attitude on commitment, and decision making.

Here's one idea. Ask a man how he feels about children. If he doesn't want to have them or like them, what does that mean? You have learned much from an indirect question.

Other books I recommend are: Dr Phil's Love Smart:Find the one you want, fix the one you got has excellent advice, on getting the commitment, and the 80/20 rule. The Secret Psychology of how we fall in love by Dr Paul Dobransky has excellent advice on testing a man to see if he is commitment material, also on finding the right kind of man, using the women from Sex and the City as the four female archetypes, the queen, warrior, magician and lover to determine both your personality types. There is also a personality test you can take at KWML.com.

So, I highly recommend this book, and good luck.

5 out of 5 stars Great addition to Stitch and Bitch collection!.......2007-10-09

Received this book as a birthday present recently (siggghhh...gifts make them easier to deal with, don't they?). In this case, I had Debbie Stoller's new one on my wish list since it first starting appearing on the Web, months before the actual release date.

Debbie (again) did not disappoint! This is a terrific book and I can't wait to get started making some of the projects. As I have mentioned before, crochet is my first love in the yarn craft genre, but there hasn't been as much attention given to crochet as there has been to knitting, since the current yarn frenzy began. This book provides a lot of variety- fun, easy projects, some more classic looks and in keeping with her knit books, Debbie again provides a comprehensive guide to the basics, how-to's re: stitches, yarns, sewing it all together and so much more. Even a short history of crochet is included.

Some of my already want- to- try projects from the book include: Unseamly Sweater, FrouFrou cardigan, Fluffy Bunny Slippers and One Skein Scarf, to name just four.

Thanks for another terrific book Debbie. PS: Love the cover photo!!!

5 out of 5 stars i am now one happy hooker!.......2007-10-04

When I was younger I learned to crochet...
YEARS later I had forgotten how, after reading many reviews and going to MANY websites, I found this book, and boy am I glad I did!
Not only do you learn the basics but you also learn how to read patterns and there are several easy projects!
I would say this is a must have for any person looking to get into crochet!

1 out of 5 stars too many errors in patterns.......2007-09-26

BE WARNED! there are too many mistakes in this book. if u dont believe me, look at the online "corrections and clarifications" page. my advice: dont begin ANY project in this book b4 looking at this corrections page. the ratio of patterns with mistakes to the mistake-free patterns is astonishing. i want to love the author and the book (nice style, great projects, pictures and instructions) but i've never used another book that contains this many errors. insult to injury: the corrections page is hard to read AND CONTAINS ERRORS!!!

3 out of 5 stars Cute stuff-but not really for beginners.......2007-09-17

Some of these patterns are cute, but I often found similar items online for free. My biggest complaint as a newbie to crochet is that her patterns often describe a very particular yarn, presumably one that needs to be ordered from a specialty store. If you are a beginner, you should start off with materials you can find cheaply at your local craft store. It would be helpful if they'd suggest alternative yarns for practice.

Aside from this, the intros and instructions in the beginning chapters were helpful, and did a lot to show how and why you do certain things.

5 out of 5 stars Explination invitation!.......2007-09-09

I read many reviews and re-read them. I thought about buying this book for a long time. Then I finally decided I would buy it and see for myself!
I am a 'Happy Hooker' now. Debbie Stoller's book has taught me that some of the ways I had learnt from other books was not right and now I understand why some of my projects would not come out right no matter how I tried it over and over again. Her lessons are so clear. The sketches teach you EXACTLY how to do the stitch correctly. The names of the clothing and chapter heads may be too cutsey for some but for me it led me to smile a little more and relax. Crochet can be fun! It doesn't have to be so rigid and formal. Debbie teaches you how to actually ENJOY a hobby you should be already enjoying. I will use this book to help me teach my daughter-in-law and her friend, especially now that I know the correct way to do a few of these stitches.
The clothing is beautiful! No boxy-non-fitting clothing here!

Want to know more? Check out Friedman and Yorio's "Top 5 Reasons to Buy This Book" for the inside scoop.

Top 5 Reasons to Buy The Girl's Guide to Being a Boss (Without Being a Bitch)

1. You just got promoted.
Yikes! Nobody ever taught you to be a manager. Your role models have been less than fabulous and you want to be better. We teach you how to be more mentor than manager. We show you how to be firm but fair. Armed with our book, you will learn how to get the best out of your employees.

2. Most management books put you to sleep.
No jargon and no need for an MBA. The Girl's Guide to Being a Boss Without Being a Bitch is a fun read that offers information without intimidation and includes all the advice you need to learn to lead, inspire and motivate. We include quizzes, tips, checklists and fun sidebars such as "Celluloid Bitches," and "The Girl's Guide to Gossip" throughout.

3. Your manager is crazy.
You're not alone. In our "Good Witch/Big Bitch" boxes we share both the horrible and the heroic--stories from women from around the country who have seen it all and learned their lessons.

4. You're not a manager…yet!
Unlike most management books we speak to both leaders and the led. We offer tips and suggestions for dealing with issues such as micromanagement, taking credit for ideas, managing up to get the promotion, office politics and taking responsibility for mistakes.

5. Don't take just our word for it....
Good management is a life-long pursuit. We'd be foolish to believe we know it all, so to help us fill in the blanks we got on the phone with women from all over the country. We include interviews with coaches, human resource directors, other writers, supervisors, the supervised, mediators, and social workers to get their take on the challenges and opportunities of being the chick-in-charge.

Book Description

So, you finally got that promotion. You’re the boss now. The supervisor. The manager. The captain. The taskmaster. Those days of taking orders, running errands, and clock-watching are over. As exciting as all this might seem, once the rush of the promotion is over, you might be scratching your head wondering exactly what to do. Being the boss is never easy, but it's twice as hard for a woman. It seems like there's no middle ground. Either you're the dragon lady who rules with an iron fist or the mousey girl who gets drowned out at every meeting. When a woman wields authority and dares to make tough decisions, how often is the "B-word" bandied about by her employees? How can she strike that balance between pushover and dictator?

Fear not. You can do the job. All you need is a little helpful advice to send you on your way. Whether you supervise two as a shift manager or lord over an entire corporate empire, Caitlin Friedman and Kim Yorio will show you how to step gracefully into your new position of power. They’ll teach you how to motivate your team without alienating them, how to delegate without feeling guilty, how to deal with office politics and how to handle evaluations, promotions, and even firings. And for those of you who are already running the show, they can help you become the mentor your employees deserve.

Inside, there are self-assessment questionnaires to help you find out where you land on the bitch or wimp scale; interviews with prominent female bosses, human-resources directors, and therapists; and advice from a whole host of experts. In addition, there are funny and informative checklists and tips to make sure you’re the Good Witch around the office and not the Big Bitch. And, most important, Caitlin and Kim will teach you the secrets to owning your role and loving it. You’ve earned your promotion, so enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars A life-saver!.......2007-10-04

Several months ago I found myself a newly promoted manager overseeing several of my former peers. Though thrilled at the promotion, I had no idea how difficult the transition would be. I stumbled upon The Girl's Guide to Being a Boss (Without Being a [...]), and it was like reading the handbook on how to navigate through my exact situation. From employee evaluations to office politics, it covers every aspect of the very delicate (and often sticky) manager-employee relationship. Coupled with its light and pleasant tone, this book was an absolute life-saver for me. It helped me get perspective and see the humor in most (if not all) situations. Definitely a must-have for every girl trying to find her way through the labyrinth that is the business world.

There is still, today, a public distaste for ambitious women: ambitious men are "go-getters"; ambitious women (esp. bosses) are "bitches". "bitches"); that they can inspire, motivate, and lead--including making hard choices--with integrity, elegance, and grace, all the while keeping their eye on profitability and simultaneously treating others with decency and respect. 3 out of 5 stars Got time to waste?.......2007-06-11

I am a listener to "Miss Wendy" here in NY and when this book came out I didn't plan on buying it just because as an avid reader I couldn't picture her writing a novel. I still can't. It came to me automatically because of a book club I belong to so I read it. It's really juvenile. I mean the Ritz character is sooooo overdone and I felt like yelling out, "I get it! She's a B****!" I liked the Tracee character alot since she was the one who had some sense. I know Williams had help on this novel as she did with her bios and Ritz #1. All I can say is with two people working on this book, we should have got better. Like I said, if you have time to waste read this then give it away. You won't read it again. Williams really needs to stay in her lane.

4 out of 5 stars a good read.......2007-04-10

If your a Wendy Williams fan, you will enjoy the book. It was a little slow getting into it, but once you get a few chapters in, it gets really good. I would recommend all of her books. Her books reflect her colorful commentary of her show! 107.5 NY NJ Connecticut 2-7pm, shes also syndicated in other cities.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Tatsuya on Rye.......2007-04-21

Already read a majority of it probably 2 years back, forgot about it and came back and bought the book, loved it as usual.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful comic.......2006-03-09

It's a wonderful webcomic brought into book form. The quality is really top-notch.

A definite buy for everyone who has enjoyed them on the web (www.sinfest.net).

Thank you M. Ishida. I hope the next book is coming soon !

5 out of 5 stars More Sinfest for the morally confounded.......2005-08-31

Excellent little strips which will amuse adults and corrupt children. Highly recommended. Arguments between God and the devil, pimp ninja, calligraphy and occasionally a cute cat and dog strip.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2004-04-13

Ishida brings an incredible vivacity and sensitive, full-ranged humor to his comics. The style is impeccable--his versitality, polish, and imitation are unmatched in webcomics (with the possible exception of Checkerboard Nightmare), and he posesses the ability to capture any range of expression or caricature with such fluidity and consistency that the reader may marvel at his ability. The humor is consistently light-hearted, but surprisingly, the strip ranges from almost brow-raisingly crude ([errotic] readings) to heart-warmingly pure, and /almost/ silly (Pooch and Percy). However, both seem to spring from the same mind, the same undrestanding, and the same viewpoint. The effect is that both are given the same whimsical feel, as if the author is saying, "Hey, there's virtue in everything. There's vice in everything. It's all good." Even with this philosophy, however, the strip never lacks in social and psychological insight.

Every strip is handled with equal, fluid ease--one never feels that a punchline was forced (unless it's obviously intentional and part of the gag). Indeed, Ishida often entirely forgoes a punchline, relying instead on the inherent lovability and cuteness of each one of his characters to carry through the effect of a particular strip, which is amazingly effective as a humor device, and speaks to the careful thought and inidividuality given to each character as much as Ishida's ability to just be funny.

Perhaps the only thing about this comic that isn't endearingly funny is the punny hilarity of the daily, unqiue, "epitaph" located by the by-line in each strip. I'm simply astounded that Ishida has been able to come up with hundreds of unique gags with such an incredibly limited scope without ever being boring or repeating himself. It reminds one of Mozart's variations.

All in all, if you don't mind the /occasional/ irreverence, this is a strip you /want/ to read every day. I had never before seen a strip that manages to transcend a mere daily laugh-gag (though that can be a fine art--c.f. Get Fuzzy) to be something in touch with a deeper, more beautiful humor, without ever giving off even a hint of cornball. That was before I discovered Sinfest.

5 out of 5 stars Positively Sinful.......2004-01-15

This is a work of art. I have been reading the web comic for a little over 6 months and when I bought this, I knew that I had gotten myself into something so good that I couldn't let go. This is one of the best books I have gotten my hands on. Five Stars all the way!!!

I love this book. I'm totally stoked on the projects I've created with it. I've learned a lot from this book unlike another boring sewing book my mom gave me, "Sewing for dummies". This is a rad beginner book as well as alterations and fittings. Any level of sewing should be able to get something from it. I also think the Sew Fast Sew Easy book is a great book to have first.

5 out of 5 stars Sew many Books! Sew little time!.......2007-09-26

I got the Sew Fast Sew Easy book and loved it so I bought this book also. It was cheaper than some of the others and well worth it. I had a really good time doing the projects in this book and learned some more on tailoring and heming. This would be a great gift for anyone who likes to get creative and mess around.

5 out of 5 stars Sewing rules everything around me! Grab the scissors! Make your own clothes 'Yall! .......2007-09-25

I'm learning to sew and have found the most fabulous books. This is one of my favorites. It's no B.S. Other books I have show how to construct garments but this book is really good at explaining how to do more of the basic sewing and tailoring skills. I now know how to reconstruct my clothes to fit better and to make more original stuff. I don't look like my outfit came right off the rack at the Gap. You have to crawl before you can run and this book will get you through crawling and walking and into running. I'm a big fan of Rip It!. Here are some other books that have been realy helpful:

There are lots of good books about sewing available, for every skill level and fortunately this is one of the great ones. This book does a great job being "hip" and "trendy". The illustrations are done very well and are clear to understand. The ideas in this book are creative and original. You'll be glad you grabed this book. Also check out the Sew Fast Sew Easy book.
