A great story for the series.......2007-08-20
I have read a number of the books in the Death series and I have to say that Witness In Death is the best when it comes to developing the characters Eve and Roarke. I'm looking forward to catching up on the books that I have missed and if I have time I may write a review. If you like Nora Roberts then you'll like these books.
Great.......2007-07-19
I love this series... you must read it to understand. It's all about a homicide detective named Lt. Eve Dallas and how she goes about solving a case which always seems imposibble to solve at first.
Great book.......2007-06-11
A wonderful addition to the "In Death" series, and a wonderful tip-of-the-hat to Dame Agatha Christie!
Good blend of past and future.......2007-04-26
A theater in the future. A stage play performed in the technologically-advanced days yet to come. Shakespearian genius meeting the likes of Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. What am I rambling about? I'm rambling about Witness in Death, a book which combines past and present (ours) with the future in which it is set.
I really liked the backdrop of a murder at the theater. You have a thousand witnesses, which should make for an open and shut case, but often times 1000 people see things 1000 different ways. What looks like an advantage actually turns out to be a bit of a problem for Eve as she fights her way through an investigation that's anything but open and shut. As in the theater, disguise is the key... and things are often not what they seem.
Witness In Death.......2006-03-22
I enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down. I rate this one high among the In Death series.

Customer Reviews:
Near Perfect.......2007-04-28
This is my third James novel. The present work was written over 30 years ago by a James in her prime. It is short and compact; and, it has a nicely balanced structure with good characters. It is written with straightforward and simple prose and it is a compelling read that is hard to put down. In short, it is what one can describe as a masterpiece as are some of her other early novels.
The book opens with the literary hook: a murder in a field in the countryside. But it quickly switches to a second murder in a science laboratory.
The novel has an interesting set of characters, and as in other James novels, there are half dozen suspects with various financial and emotional motivations to be involved with the killings. The mystery unfolds slowly, and the reader is given a few clues just ahead of the Dalgliesh. By the way, Dalgliesh does not play a dominant role in the book.
Readers will not be disappointed, and the book demonstrates the fame and ability of James as a crime writer. Most will want to keep the book and set it aside to read again in the future. Also, the book demonstrates again that more is not always better than less. In the elaborate 550 page slow moving story told in The Murder Room, the author has a 95 page introduction and no crime until around page 130. We wait as Dalgliesh does not enter the investigation until almost page 200. Thankfully, all of that type of writing is missing here. The story is well underway and the reader is fully engaged by page 10. James tells a well balanced and a compelling tale in half the space.
This is a masterpiece.
A Touchstone British Murder Mystery.......2007-01-11
Perfect. In this sixth of her Adam Dalgliesh mysteries, the author has achieved a flawless blend of the requisite elements. Dalgliesh is now a fully developed character and is given a sidekick that provides a fine complement to Dalgliesh's naturally dark character. I would also note without any spoilers that a grasp of Dalglish's background adds greatly to the enjoyment of the work. Our author is now able to avoid providing excessive and distracting detail regarding her protagonist as well as provide themes and plot lines that resonate with the Inspector's experience. Suffice it also to say that there is a strong and unifying theme running throughout the book that neatly ties everything up in an edifying and powerful manner. As befits first-rate fiction (of any genre), the book provides a worthwhile lesson in the nature of the human condition.
In short, a Forensic Biologist is whacked over the head with a mallet in his own police laboratory. Thus, the investigation of other murders must be put on hold while the police sort out their own business. The setting is well-matched to the events, the characters are diverse and excellently drawn, the plot moves nicely--but what sets this book apart are the constant red herrings. Upon encountering what appears to be a significant clue, you have not yet finished congratulating yourself on solving the mystery before your speculation is revealed to be flawed.
What makes this a masterwork is that the diversions and complications appear entirely natural. Nothing is out of place and the book is seamless in its relentless march to the ultimate revelation, the tragedy of which is developed in much greater detail than in prior works.
Thus far, my favorite P.D. James mystery. Highly recommended.

Lacked A Punch .......2006-03-24
I find P.D. James' stories adapt better to television than they do novels. She is a fine writer and I admire the heck out of her ability to render a story's setting as important (and usually moreso) than any of the characters who inhabit the spaces of her creations. However, in this novel, as in the three others I've read, I felt slightly bored because it was as if the settings, being so lovingly, artfully described, overpowered the events and cried out for adaptation to the screen, and simply failed when confined to the single dimension of the flat page. James is a better screen writer than a novelist. She tells a fine story and tells it with imagination, but I can't help but confess, I find her books a little slow moving and dull. Here I wanted to find out more about the crime lab and its experiments. I also wanted to follow the life of the young girl who is the featured character at the very start, but alas, she drifts into the background soon after the opening pages, and we don't encounter her again except as a prop at the very end. I think Death of an Expert Witness needed a few more sub-plots and deviations from the main story. It was too little mystery and too much verbiage. Sorry...
Who can resist Adam Dalgleish?.......2005-05-02
This is an old P.D. James that I had somehow missed when I read her continuously in the mid-1990s. Although I love the James character Cordelia Gray, who appears in all of the "Unsuitable Job for a Woman"-type mysteries, my favorite James character is Inspector Dalgliesh. Since BBC/PBS did a series of "Mystery" episodes years ago based on the Dalgliesh character, I have him firmly fixed in my mind as the troubled Inspector (aren't they all?) who is also a brilliant poet and lover of all things fine in life. This book is a Dalgliesh book, not his best (that would be "A Taste for Death" or perhaps "Shroud for a Nightingale"), but even the worst Dalgliesh (I can't think of one) would be better than the best of most other people. This one takes place at a forensic laboratory where criminal and other evidence is processed and gives us a bit of a glimpse into how the Brits do Crime Scene Investigation (CSI). These are country people, not slick American city types, and that's OK. The countryside hides lots of interesting characters who have all sorts of motivations. Keep in mind that this was first published in 1986 and the world has changed rather tremendously since then!
Book Description

Desperate detectives ask neighbor Annie Kingston, with a background in art, to interview Erin for a composite. But what if Annie's lack of experience in forensic art leads Erin astray? The detectives could end up searching for a face that doesn't exist. Leaving the real killer free to stalk the neighborhood.

Gripping, Chilling, and Downright Entertaining.......2007-07-04
Erin Willit witnessed what no 12 year old girl should: the murder of her murder. The killer is running free, and Erin is the only witness to the heinous act. Erin is so distraught by this event that she can't give the police any help in identifying the murderer.
Neighbor Annie Kingston is a veteran courtroom artist, and the police have asked her to work with Erin to put together a composite sketch of the killer. Annie has recently moved her family to Grove Landing to find some peace and safety. Now she finds herself immersed into a living nightmare as she discovers more about the killer and his motive.
This is the first installment of Collins' Hidden Faces series, and what a way to begin! The story is told from Annie's first person point of view. She juggles the demands of motherhood and a dark family past, all the while striving to find a killer before his trail grows cold. Brandilyn Collins holds her own as a suspense writer and she effortlessly guides readers along as the pages simply fly by. She also effectively weaves themes of faith and purpose throughout that add to the richness of this story. Readers will be encouraged by the spiritual awakening of Annie's character.
This is gripping, chilling, and downright entertaining reading and I'm eagerly anticipating the next installment.
www.kindredreviews.blogspot.com.......2007-04-27
I give this an A+ for suspense and police/forensic details! I do prefer books with more character development (I want to really know what they're feeling, etc), and this one didn't "grab me" that way. Otherwise, this is a great Christian suspense, worth the read!
Brandilyn Collins: The Best Thriller and Suspense Novelist!.......2006-11-27
As a Christian person myself, I love reading thriller and suspense books. Though, other thriller and suspense books are filled with sex, swearing, and excessive gory details. I had no idea that there were Christian thriller and suspense books out there until shopping one day in a local J.O.Y. Bookstore. So, let me tell you what a "thriller" that was for me. So, I picked it up. I must say this the best book I've read so far. She is my favorite author. Her unique style of writing, faith, suspense, and real characters are simply awesome. I was sitting on the edge of my seat until I was finished. I felt like I was right there helping Annie solve this case. I would give this book more than 5 stars if I could. I'm going to buy her other books and can't wait for more. BUY THIS BOOK!!! YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!!
First Impression.......2006-07-18
I've been wanting to read Brandilyn Collins for some time and I must say "Brink of Death" my a five star first impression on me. There is little to not like about this book. The dialogue is tight and the story proceeds at just the right speed. This story has great timing, never dragging but lingering on detail at times to allow the reader to catch up. I look forward to the rest of the novels in the Hidden Faces series.
Riveting.......2006-04-12
One of the best Christian Fiction books I have read in a long time. Lots of suspense, great characters, and a good story. I can't wait to read the others in this series. It is nice to find a book with good suspense, minus the foul language and gory details. Highly recommended.

We all watched Terri Schiavo die. The controversy around her case dominated the headlines and talk shows, going all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, the White House, and the Vatican.
And it's not over yet. Despite her death, the controversy lingers. In
Silent Witness, former LAPD detective and
New York Times bestselling author
Mark Fuhrman applies his highly respected investigative skills to examine the medical evidence, legal case files, and police records. With the complete cooperation of Terri Schiavo's parents and siblings, as well as their medical and legal advisers, he conducts exclusive interviews with forensics experts and crucial witnesses, including friends, family members, and caregivers.
Fuhrman's findings will answer these questions:
- What was Terri and Michael Schiavo's marriage really like?
- What happened the day Terri collapsed?
- What did Michael Schiavo do when he discovered Terri unconscious? How long did he wait before calling 911?
- What do medical records show about her condition when she was first admitted to the hospital?
- What will the autopsy say?
The legal issues and ethical questions provoked by Terri Schiavo's extraordinary case may never be resolved. But the facts about her marriage, her condition when she collapsed, and her eventual death fifteen years later can be determined.
With
Silent Witness, Fuhrman goes beyond the legal aspects of the case and delves into the broader, human background of Terri Schiavo's short, sad life.

Customer Reviews:
Day Late and a Dollar Short Mark Fuhrman!.......2007-07-21
Regretfully, "Silent Witness" depicts how someone with Mark Fuhrman's reputation comes to a tragic scene after the FACT....just to make a BUCK!
If you sincerely want to learn more about the Terri Schiavo case..save your money on this one....and....read some of the other books published that show the indisputable documentation and facts.
blah blah blah.......2007-07-08
This was perhaps one of the most poorly written books that I have ever read. The author notes that he published the book before the autopsy was done and even makes a pseudo attempt at being unbiased... all in the end to seal the deal and Call Mike Schiavo a liar and a murderer in a very convoluted and indirect way..
Fact mark Furhman is a detective not a forensics expert
Fact she had lab values not consistent with life. Fact Mark Furhman is not a medical doctor. Fact this book was poorly written repetitive and took three hours of my life that I cannot get back to read...
A Very Good Book.......2007-06-22
Mark Fuhrman's book is very good. He does a very good investigation into Terri's collapse; an investigation that should have done on the night of her collapse and later when the Schindler's filed numerous police investigation inquires.
While the book came out before the autopsy results of Terri Schiavo, the book still provides some distrubing questions.
The autopsy did little to give clout on Fuhrman's conclusions and suspicions.
Regarding, Terri Schiavo autopsy:
In reading Furhman's book please bare in mind that autopsy results come with several caveats that bear noticing:
1. Terri's collapse remains a mystery to this day. Terri did not have a heart attack.
2. Michael Schiavo was the only one there.
3. It is highly unlikely that Terri had Bulima.
4. The issue of the potassium inbalance is also highly suspect.
5. Michael Schiavo is on the record of giving at least 3 different conflicting accounts of Terri's collapse. The following things remain in conflict to this day:
Did Michael have argument the day before she collapsed? - Conflicted.
What time Michael came home that night is conflicted.
Was Terri awake when Michael arrived home? Conflicted.
What made Michael wake up and why did he wake up? Conflicted.
What position did Michael find Terri in? Conflicted.
Who did Michael call? Conflicted.
Did Michael hold Terri? Conflicted.
Was Terri breathing? Conflicted.
All of these things are conflicted from the various depos, testimonies, and accounts given by Michael Schiavo.
There are also still unanswered quesitons:
What was significance of the vomit found near Terri. (It was later determined to be from the cats; Who determined that?)
6. Experts have stated that it possible for Terri to been inflicted trauma without leaving any detectable evidence. And if such evidence did in fact exist, it is possible the EMTs life saving measures done to Terri could have compromised that evidence.
7. Perhaps that most important caveat of the autopsy is the ME's final statment:
That most of medical records regarding Terri Schiavo are missing and have been lost.
For this reason, the case remains open to this day waiting additional medical information that could shed some light on Terri's collapse.
The issue of missing medical records was key question of concern during the litigation of Terri's Law that was never really answered.
Flawed, but it did succeed in making me think!.......2007-04-02
To paraphrase this book's author, "This case isn't about the right to die peacefully, or about euthanasia." Retired detective Fuhrman takes the position that this case is about a man wanting to free himself from a marriage, and doing so at any cost as long as someone else is making payment.
I have two criticisms of Mr. Fuhrman's work. First, it should not have been written before the autopsy results for Terri Schiavo became available. They would, I believe, have altered some of his assumptions and therefore some of his conclusions. Second, he repeats material not once but several times; not for emphasis, but (in my opinion) to extend the word count sufficiently to make it book length, and publishable as such. With those things said, though, I found myself thinking about the Schiavo tragedy from different angles than before I read Mr. Fuhrman's book. Like a good detective, he accepts nothing at face value; and his understanding of human nature, at its best as well as at its worst, illuminates much that never made sense to me before.
Worth reading, although the repetition makes even this sad yet riveting story bog down at times.
What Actually Caused Terri Schiavo's 1990 Collapse?.......2007-03-27
As public interest in Terri Schiavo largely seemed to fade after the release of the 2005 autopsy report, I was able to pick this book up for a mere dollar. After reading it, I still do not know why Terri Schiavo collapsed in 1990. After that collapse and a 1992 medical malpractice judgment, however, I remain convinced that she was treated in a morally repugnant manner by her husband.
Book Description
"This well-crafted legal thriller has the feel of the real, because it was written by a first-rate lawyer who is also a very good writer." -Alan Dershowitz, author of Preemption: The Knife That Cuts Both Ways
Paul Batista, one of the country's foremost defense lawyers, has written the ultimate legal thriller with murder in its heart. When Tom Perini, a legendary Heisman Trophy winner turned criminal lawyer, is found brutally murdered in Central Park, his widow Julie not only must unravel the mysteries of her husband's secret double life, but survive long enough to discover the truth. A thriller and courtroom drama of corruption and greed so authentic it reads like tomorrow's headlines.
"A spectacular new addition to the legal thriller genre. Fast, smart and exciting, with richly drawn characters and a race-horse pace. Death's Witness is definitely a winner!"
-Jack Ford, anchor, Good Morning America
"A great read!"
-Fred Graham, anchor on Court TV and former CBS news correspondent

Profound Genius.......2006-12-19
Sometimes, as a result of age, or as a result of life, experience can provide "vignettes" worthy of note.
Woven together expertly with powerful and creative eloquence, Mr. Batista's novel successfully explores
cerebral, visceral and passionate responses of the human condition at its best and at its worst.
He applies them appropriately with rare insight to his strong characters with profound understanding.
Death's Witness affords an informative journey into the world of law... at its best and at its worst.
This reader remained absorbed in this ever so probable adventure.

A gutsy and complex novel.......2006-12-15
I love it when a book from a new author hits the doorstep, and it turns out to be so good that it seems to be velcroed to my hands once I start reading. I had this experience with DEATH'S WITNESS by Paul Batista. Batista is a prominent defense attorney and, perhaps more importantly in this age of the electronic media, a go-to guy for Court TV and elsewhere. Such a curriculum vitae does not guarantee a work of the quality of DEATH'S WITNESS, but in Batista's case his literary prowess is the equal of his legal reputation.
Batista commences the book with an extremely gutsy move: he kills off a gentleman who arguably is his main character. Tom Perini is a legendary football player, a Heisman Trophy winner who turned pro only to turn his back on his instant name recognition and fame to attend law school and become a defense attorney. We are barely introduced to Perini when he is gunned down in Central Park while jogging, an incident that appears to the police to be a random act of violence but is known to the reader to be a deliberate hit. Perini leaves a young daughter and a wife, Julie, who understandably is grief-stricken and baffled by her husband's murder.
Disappointed by the police investigation and angered by the attitude of an FBI agent who has interjected himself into the case, Julia begins investigating on her own, focusing on her husband's professional life and specifically on a money-laundering case that he had been trying at the time of his death. Julia slowly begins to uncover a series of quiet deceptions in Perini's life that leads her to conclude that he was living a double life. With the aid of Vincent Sorrentino, a defense attorney representing a co-defendant in the trial Perini was involved in, Julia finds that she and her loved ones are in terrible danger, and that the only way to protect herself and her family is to discover the secrets that her husband hid from her so well.
Batista, in a word, is wonderful here, guiding his readers skillfully and assuredly through a complex plot. Though it is not immediately obvious, Batista eschews what would have been an easy path for him --- writing a courtroom thriller --- in favor of presenting a mystery unraveled through dogged determination. While there are courtroom scenes in the book, they add to and enhance the story rather than become the alpha and omega of the tale.
DEATH'S WITNESS is Exhibit A for the proposition that Batista is as much a winner at writing as he is at defending.

so I read it (300pp) in one night. In the Grisham genre, but much faster-paced. Plot and character development are terrific, and you'll love the denouement! Great read for fans of Lee Child too.

An amazingly fascinating, wonderfully written thriller, with living, breathing characters and surprise after surprise. Out-Grishams Grisham.

Book Description
In Dreams of the Burning Child, David Lee Miller explores the uncanny persistence of filial sacrifice as a motif in English literature and its classical and biblical antecedents. He combines strikingly original reinterpretations of the Aeneid, Hamlet, The Winter's Tale, and Dombey and Son with perceptive accounts of dreams found in memoirs, poems, and psychoanalytic texts.
Miller looks closely at the grisly fantasy of the sacrifice of sons as it is depicted in classical epic, early modern drama, the nineteenth-century novel, the postcolonial novel, the lyric, the funeral elegy, sacred scriptures, and psychoanalytic theory. He also draws examples from painting, sculpture, photography, and architecture into a witty and engaging discussion that ranges from the binding of Isaac to Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart, and from questions of literary history to the dilemmas of patriarchal masculinity.
