SAT words.......2007-06-15
This book was invaluable, couldn't believe how many of these words were on the actual test.
Umm...this is pretty good but..........2007-05-23
This is a pretty good vorcabulary learning book but not every word has a picture to go along with it and it's sometimes confusing to follow along with the picture. You also need to be dedcated to learning these vorcabulary because not every word can be remebered through pictures.
Best Method for Learning Words.......2007-05-22
The author's technique really works. We tried other books in our homeschool but none of them worked as effectively as this one. The visual imagery, stories, and funny pronounciations help make each word very memorable.
I still remember words from sixth grade!.......2007-01-09
When I was in sixth grade, my English teacher used this book to teach us vocabulary. It had fun cartoons and a really great tone, but most importantly, it worked. Each word was turned into what it sounded like. For example, the word "volatile" became "volley tile." The cartoon would have a drawing of people playing a game of a new sport called volley tile, which was like volleyball, except instead of a ball, there was a tile that could blow up at any time, demonstrating the definition of the word. This was in sixth grade, people. I don't even remember my teacher's name in the sixth grade, but I do remember the definition of volatile, embellishment, penchant, and the list goes on. This book's devices are incredible and really fun, and they truly make learning vocabulary painless, I promise.
Great tool .......2005-10-23
I am an AVID teacher and am preparing my students for the SAT. After I started using this book my students now think that learning Vocab is fun! When have you ever heard a high school student say that vocab is fun? I highly recommend this book!

help make your seder "A Night to Remember".......2007-05-13
I try, each year, to find some new insight, comment, or voice to make our Seder not just a repetition of the traditional text. This year, this was my new source and it's a real winner. It has the entire traditional text plus explanations of things I didn't know - and I've read a lot - plus information on customs from other communities, and, of course as advertised, comments about every subject touched on in the Haggadah from many sources ranging from Mark Twain to Rabbi Joseph Solevechik to fascinating modern voices you might not know but will appreciate. Filled with lighthearted illustrations that fit perfectly. You COULD use that at the seder, but I recommend spending the time to read it first and selecting some of its content for your seder. Should be a good source for several years.
A wise- and whimsical - haggadah.......2007-04-05
For anyone seeking a modern voice speaking towards the classical text, this haggadah is a gem. "A Night to Remember" was based on the all-Hebrew "Ha'lailah Ha'zeh," the authors' efforts to provide a work for contemporary Israelis. The best elements of that volume have been transferred into "A Night To Remember," including the creative illustrations from Michael Kichka, whose pictures provide both a sense of whimsy and substance. Illustrations vary from the humorous (the ox in "Chad Gad Ya" is a man in a Chicago Bulls shirt and cap) to of political caricatures, e.g. Ben-Gurion. The humor and warmth in the illustrations adds to the inviting nature of the book, which is further strengthened by a methodical layout and inviting directions.
This Haggadah provides contemporary commentaries and readings from a stunning array of sources; Rabbis Telushkin and Potok are nestled alongside authors Milan Kundera and Phillip Roth. Primo Levi's words follow Golda Meir's. Even those well versed in the sources of the Haggadah will find items of interest, with thoughts from kibbutzniks and refusniks. There is the occasional comment from the "touchy-feely" department, but some people need that in a seder, and they are provided for here.
The entire Hebrew text of the classical Ashkenazi Haggadah is provided, although not every word is translated into English. The commentaries and instructions do deviate from "black hat" Orthodoxy from time to time, but not in any way that even remotely effects the essential content of the seder. Only those rigidly ultra-Orthodox in their thinking should avoid this book. The illustration "The four daughters," with its Talmud carrying wise daughter, is enough to give such folks a fit of apoplexy- and that's just one picture.

Book Description
Illuminates the value of understanding the psychophysiology of trauma for both clinicians and their traumatized clients. Traumatized people hold a memory of that trauma in their brains and bodies. This is the first book to link this phenomenon of somatic memory and the impact of trauma on the body. Reducing the chasm between scientific theory and clinical practice and bridging the gap between talk and body therapy, Rothschild presents techniques for addressing the memory in the body.
Customer Reviews:
A future classic reference text for professional or lay person........2007-07-13
This book takes the mystery out of mind-body treatment of trauma therapy. It brings together diverse treatment methodologies and offers clear examples of how to integrate them usefully, compassionately and successfully.
For professionals who practice talk- or behavior-oriented therapy, Rothschild offers (1) a wonderfully concise argument for including the body in trauma recovery therapy and (2) simple, careful and deeply effective ways to integrate somatic therapy into their current approaches to working with clients who suffer from the effects of trauma--either recent, past or even long past. Since so many clients have at least a component of past trauma in their lives (underlying whatever brought them to therapy in the first place), this book should be on every therapist's reference shelf...and READ! Rothschild's stress on safety--and especially how to employ theory always in the service of the client's safety--is fantastic.
For lay people who have a basic acquaintance with psychology and psychotherapy, it offers a broad understanding of the wide but still-developing field of trauma therapy, and could help many people (1) finally decide to get effective professional help and (2) choose a competent, appropriate therapist for that purpose.
Excellent resource for survivors of trauma and therapists.......2007-02-11
My interest in reading this book stems from the psychotherapeutic work I am currently doing (as a client, working with a psychotherapist) to remember my own childhood trauma and learn how to rework these memories into clear consciousness and healthier emotional responses. I have just begun this work and, as is my tendency, I went to Amazon to see what was out there that I could read to educate myself about what trauma is and, most importantly, how to heal it.
I highly recommend this book for both survivors of trauma and the mental health professionals who work with them.
I easily read this book during a long weekend. The text, although written by a mental health professional, is quite accessible even to the layperson, and has a number of examples throughout that are used to illustrate the author's points.
The book itself is divided into two main sections: Theory and Practice. Both are important to understanding the current ways we comprehend and treat trauma, based on the latest advances in the neurosciences that allow us to know better our own minds. Much of Rothschild's work hinges on the ways that the mind-body-emotions work together in experiencing, comprehending, and even storing in memory trauma that we experience. This is important, because the practice/treatment section of the book is also based on the same mind-body-emotions connection. So you must to some extent accept the mind-body-emotions framework to see the value of this book.
I do accept this framework, although not exclusively or primarily.
The second half of the book is equally rich and helpful, including a number of body-based (somatic) tools and techniques that anyone can use to begin to manage responses to trauma (and they are numerous and frequently very subtle) and then slowly start to examine the original sources of that trauma. Besides being based on or in the body, many of these techniques are also cognitive-behavioral in nature, so one must be willing to accept that set of theory as well.
Rothschild also goes into some detail about what somatic techniques can work immediately in the course of a therapy session, and these techniques could just as easily be used by the therapist as by the client. Since my therapist does not work much with somatic or cognitive behavioral techniques, I have asked that we do so, using some of the techniques in this book. (Yes, you can tell your therapist what will or might work best for you in the context of your therapy.) Equally helpful and insightful are sections that focus specifically on the interpersonal relationship clients have with their therapists in the context of therapy, a little discussed topic among professionals and never discussed among clients who often don't know what to expect during the course of therapy.
All in all, a good source of information for someone who is ready to face trauma in his/her life and wants some helpful tools for this journey.
Trauma and the Body.......2006-03-13
This book is very informative and draws on the work of many of the most well-known and learned persons in this field. As a graduate student writing a dissertation on child abuse and its effects on adult survivors this book has proven to be a rich source of information, data, resources, and references.
Essential reading in trauma work.......2005-09-17
To me this is one of the pioneering books of body-centered psychotherapy. Well-written, insightful with meaningful case examples. It shines, it teaches, and it directs therapist in their work in profound life-changing ways. I work with traumatized children and integrate animal assisted therapy - and this book has been re-read multiple times and applied in my work.

Must Read Material!!.......2003-10-31
I stumbled onto this book researching PTSD. My husband and I have been to a dozen doctors (literally) who clearly do not know the information in this book; information that I have watched manifest itself beneficially and adversely as explained herein. Modern psychology has gotten lazy in its treatments of the very treatable mental illnesses, and critically needed intervention is shunned as unsubstantiated because the truth behind knowledge, education and an educated support system threatens their "expertise." This book should 'light you on fire' to aggressively pursue intelligent, supportive, proactive physicians and, need be, therapists.

In the prologue to his latest novel, Nicholas Sparks makes the rather presumptuous pledge "first you will smile, and then you will cry," but sure enough, he delivers the goods. With his calculated ability to throw your heart around like a yo-yo (try out his earlier Message in the Bottle or The Notebook if you really want to stick it to yourself), Sparks pulls us back to the perfect innocence of a first love.
In 1958 Landon Carter is a shallow but well-meaning teenager who spends most of his time hanging out with his friends and trying hard to ignore the impending responsibilities of adulthood. Then Landon gets roped into acting the lead in the Christmas play opposite the most renowned goody two-shoes in town: Jamie Sullivan. Against his best intentions and the taunts of his buddies, Landon finds himself falling for Jamie and learning some central lessons in life.
Like John Irving's A Prayer for Owen Meany, Sparks maintains a delicate and rarely seen balance of humor and sentiment. While the plot may not be the most original, this boy-makes-good tearjerker will certainly reel in the fans. Look for a movie starring beautiful people or, better yet, snuggle under the covers with your tissues nearby and let your inner sap run wild. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

There was a time when the world was sweeter . . . when the women in Beaufort, North Carolina, wore dresses, and the men donned hats. . . when something happened to a seventeen year-old boy that would change his life forever.
Every April, when the wind blows in from the sea and mingles with the scent of lilacs, Landon Carter remembers his last year at Beaufort High.
It was 1958, and Landon had already dated a girl or two. He even swore that he had once been in love. Certainly the last person in town he thought he'd fall for was Jamie Sullivan, the daughter of the town's Baptist minister.
A quiet girl who always carried a Bible with her schoolbooks, Jamie seemed content living in a world apart from the other teens. She took care of her widowed father, rescued hurt animals, and helped out at the local orphanage. No boy had ever asked her out.
Landon would never have dreamed of it. Then a twist of fate made Jamie his partner for the homecoming dance, and Landon Carter's life would never be the same. Being with Jamie would show him the depths of the human heart and lead him to a decision so stunning it would send him irrevocably on the road to manhood . . .
No other author today touches our emotions more deeply than Nicholas Sparks. Illuminating both the strength and the gossamer fragility of our deepest emotions, his two New York Times bestsellers, The Notebook and Message in a Bottle, have established him as the leading author of today's most cherished love stories. Reba P. written review on "A walk to remember".......2007-09-27
"It is amazing how wrong you can be about somebody from first impressions, you've never spoken to them, don't care about their feelings, and never even think of their future, even if one day you will be a big part of it. You think you can judge someone about how they dress, or how they talk, or even how they walk, sometimes you can be correct but other times your thoughts will dramatically change once you get to know each other. It can be a good or bad change, you never know until you try."
In this book "A walk to remember" written by Nicholas Sparks is a Beautiful and Heart Wrenching novel, which will take you through an unforgettable twist in heart, when a young boy and girl grew up in completely different social groups and brought together just from a small Interaction. In 1958, Landon Carter is a senior who lives in Morehead City, North Carolina. His father is a congress man and the two of them are basically strangers to each other. He lives and was raised by his mother since his father is on the road quite often. His father basically makes him run for student-body president because he knows it will be better for his college applications, so he runs for it, and he wins. One of the mandatory assignments was to attend the school dance, and since him and his girlfriend are no longer together, he needs a date, and fast. So he takes out his year book and looks for someone he knows will be available and decides on Jamie Sullivan, otherwise known as a junior and the minister's daughter.
Jamie Sullivan is a saint, she carries a bible every where she goes and wears the same sweater since 5th grade, wears long skirts, and her hair is always in a ponytail. She believes "everything happens for a reason" and strongly believes in faith and that everyone has a good side. She is definitely not the popular one in school, and who is obviously not the one Landon and His friends are Interested in. After the dance he has no clue to ever hang out with Jamie again.
As president he also has to star in the spring play, which Jamie Sullivan's dad wrote about how he found love after his wife died. Landon is picked the lead role and Jamie is an Angel he falls in love with in the play.
From sitting together and talking on Jamie's porch, to driving her home every day, he eventually gets to know her and becomes a better person and even starts to get a high feeling for her. Hanging out with her in rehearsals for the play and her helping him with his lines he can't but help but actually performing in the play with her. On the opening night, when she comes out , he finally see's her true beauty, her hair's down to her shoulders, make-up, and a amazing smile across her face. As she sings to him in the performance with a beautiful voice he realizes that he is in love with her and she feels the same way.
Along the end the amazing love story comes to a dramatic twist and is an automatic tear jerker. While he plans a future with her, she is a hiding a secret so devastating it will change him forever. Pain and deep tears lie ahead for the couple and the readers. This story is as I said before, unforgettable and will never leave your mind as the tears drip from your face.
A good novel for all .......2007-09-26
Although I usually tend to go for the romance novels, this one had so much more packed in the pages. Nicolas Sparks tells a story that many high schoolers can relate to. I remember reading this as a young freshman and thinking about how he seemed to know exactly what a kid my age would be going through.
The story centers on a troubled teen named Landon Carter who is having difficulties with the fact that his dad walked out on his mom and him and figuring out which group he "belonged" to at his high school. He thought he had everything figured out until he was forced to join the drama club after an unfortunate turn of events.
That's where his world began unraveling. Having difficulties memorizing his lines, he has to turn to the one person he and his friends teased the most, Jamie Sullivan. Though he didn't find out for a while, her life was not all roses like the front she put on.
This book is a good read for all, but I think that middle and high school aged students can get a lot out of it. It deals with the issues that most students struggle with: friends, relationships, family, and essentially who they are and what their purpose in life is.
"A WALK TO FORGET".......2007-08-28
I was VERY disappointed in reading this book. It meandered for the entire 224 pages. Very simplistic and a third-grader could have written a better book.
I can't believe all of the positive reviews. People must really be hard up for a love story. This is sophomoric at best. When the name of the author is larger than the name of the title---WATCH OUT!!
It was a waste of my time. He could have summed the entire book up in one paragraph. What a pity!! Time is so valuable and I had to waste it on this ersatz piece of "literature".
"Miracle"??.......2007-08-08
I appreciated this book more than I thought I would, given that the writing style sometimes seemed overly precious, and the plot predictable and cliched. Still, with all that, there is a basic goodness in the main characters, including Hegbert, that shines through even this treatment. That's what prompted me to finish the book. It brings us back to a supposedly simpler time, and is good, escapist fiction, which isn't necessarily bad.
On another point, I am amazed by number of reviewers here who assume as Gospel truth--no pun intended--that Jamie dies in the end. Clearly, that's what happened in the movie. However, Sparks's treatment of that possibility at the end in the book struck me as great deal more ambiguous.
Landon never removed his ring. How did he put it? He "never felt the need to." He *knows*, with the insight of 40 intervening years, that he would have married Jamie even if she weren't dying. And, in the end, he knows "one thing that we don't know": that miracles do, indeed, happen.
Now maybe the miracle really is that Jamie changed his heart, brought two families together, and united an entire town. On the other hand, maybe the word means exactly what both Landon and Jamie always meant when they prayed for a "miracle": Jamie recovered. At least, the book never once states that she died.
As a final point, I've got to say that, if Landon indeed spent the next 40 years single and without children as a result of his wife of two weeks or so passing away when he was 17, then I don't see this as an example of True Love as much as I feel sorry for him. No matter how much Jamie taught him, he missed out on a whole lot of life.
A Walk to Remember.......2007-08-08
I'll admit, I didn't think I was in the mood for this type of story when I started reading it. And, when the author said that at first I would smile, then I would cry, I was more than determined to prove him wrong. OK, so he was right and I did cry. It was predictable and yet it still got to me. It is the story of a teenager coming of age in the fifties. Yet, in many ways it could be the story of a teenager today. Teenagers always try to fit in with the crowd and please their peers. A Walk to Remember is a quick, but memorable read.
Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Illustrating decades of research with compelling and often bizarre examples of glitches and miscues, Daniel L. Schacter's The Seven Sins of Memory dusts off an old topic and finds material of both practical and theoretical interest. Chairman of Harvard's Department of Psychology, Schacter knows his stuff and how to present it memorably. Organizing the book by examining each of seven "sins," such as absent-mindedness and suggestibility, Schacter slowly builds his case that these sometimes enraging bugs are actually side effects of system features we wouldn't want to do without. For example, when we focus our attention on one aspect of our surroundings, we inevitably draw attention away from others:
Consider this scenario: if you were watching a circle of people passing a basketball and someone dressed in a gorilla costume walked through the circle, beat his chest, and exited, of course you would notice him immediately--wouldn't you? [Researchers] filmed such a scene and showed it to people who were asked to track the movement of the ball by counting the number of passes made by one of the teams. Approximately half of the participants failed to notice the gorilla.
Scientists concerned about interesting a general audience would do well to use more gorilla suits. Schacter elegantly weaves this curiosity into his text along with clinical stories and frontline research. Recent advances in brain imaging have boosted his field considerably, and the formerly remote psychological territory has yielded plenty of exciting discoveries. Though some of the practical material seems like reheated common sense (Haunted by a traumatic memory? Talk about it.), it's backed up by solid scientific work. Write a note, tie string around the finger, or hire an assistant for reminders, but by all means remember to pick up a copy of The Seven Sins of Memory. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
A groundbreaking work by one of the world's foremost memory experts, THE SEVEN SINS OF MEMORY offers the first framework that explains common memory vices -- and their surprising virtues. In this intriguing study, Daniel L. Schacter explores the memory miscues that occur in everyday life: absent-mindedness, transience, blocking, misattribution, suggestibility, bias, and persistence. Schacter illustrates these concepts with vivid examples -- case studies, literary excerpts, experimental evidence, and accounts of highly visible news events such as the O.J. Simpson verdict, Bill Clinton's grand jury testimony, and the search for the Oklahoma City bomber. He also delves into striking new scientific research, giving us a glimpse of the fascinating neurology of memory. Together, the stories and the scientific results provide a new look at our brains and at what we more generally think of as our minds. Winner of the William James Book Award

explanation of memory.......2007-06-18
The author describes how memory works and why we fail to recall things at times. A great chapter is the one that details how incidents that never happened are explained years afterwards by people who thought that they had happened after the incidents were spoken about enough times. A very detailed book that is easy to read.
A great read for anyone interested in Memory & Forgetting.......2007-05-13
This book is for anyone interested in memories and just how malleable they really are!
I'd give it more than five stars if I could.......2006-12-19
We're all concerned with memory, right? Schachter knows that, and he has written a lively book of great interest to everyone, professionals and laypersons alike. In a folksy, fun style, he starts out by reviewing the most interesting and pertinent research on the vagaries of memory, including forgetfulness, suggestibility, blocking, persistence, etc. You can liven up a party or even your family meal by telling friends and family about some of the amazing research that he reports in this concise little volume. But he saves the best for last. In the final chapter (I hate to give it away - you can stop reading if you don't want to know the ending), he argues that the foibles of memory that we incessantly complain about are actually virtues, enabling us to function more effectively in the environment. If this is true, we can stop worrying and go with it. I really enjoyed this well-written and educational book, and I've been recommending it to everyone.
Interesting subject, but way too lengthy and ultimately boring. .......2006-06-15
If you are interested in this book, you are probably a baby boomer concerned about the aging of your mind due to occasional forgetfulness. Schacter will give you much comfort that your brain is most probably perfectly fine. Daniel Schacter explains that our brains are programmed to forget and delete trivial clutter to allow our cognitive resources to deal with the contemporary complexities of daily life. I thought the brain worked like a bad hard disk PC drive. After reading this book, I understand it works like an excellent Internet browser that automatically empty its cache memory, so it can function on new searches. Schacter mentions patients endowed with near perfect memory. They were overwhelmed by information overload. Not able to differentiate trivia from important information, they lead dependent miserable lives. Schacter made me understand that there is nothing perfect about a perfect memory.
Schacter also made me aware how unreliable our memories are. This has serious judicial implications affecting the credibility of eyewitnesses and plaintiffs relying on recalled memories from their childhood. Next time you concede an argument because the other party stated they clearly remembered a specific situation, attempt to get to the objective data to check the evidence. Memories are highly fallible.
So why am I giving this book a 2? It is because the writing is dry and lengthy. Another author, Aaron Nelson in his book "Achieving Optimal Memory" elegantly summarizes "The Seven Sins..." in just 11 pages. You actually don't learn much more after reading the entire 200 pages of "The Seven Sins..." Schacter shares so many clinical examples in such exhaustive details about each of the Sins, that he exhausts most readers in the process. Instead, I do recommend "Achieving Optimal Memory" that covers not only the "Seven Sins" but a lot more and much more efficiently in a much easier to read 200 page book.
Did your life really happen?.......2006-05-02
It's a fascination of the technological age to liken body parts to man made implements.
And so the eye becomes like a camera, the ear a microphone and the brain a computer. But careful study has shown mother nature much cleverer than our technicians and in some ways more mischevious.
And so our memories are not as so many reels of film but rather so many bits and pieces.
I say remember when you were lost in the mall as a child and your brain remembers perhaps a created past linking a visit to the mall with another experience of being lost...or did "it" really happen?
In court that question has plagued many a child sexual abuse allegation. In this context attorneys and therapists use their little tests: did the child use age appropriate words, does he describe realistic phenonomen, what was the genesis of the account? in answering that question of divining "genuine" memories.
In a programmatic way Schacter visits his seven sins. What causes us to temporarily forget information. What causes painful memories to remain imbedded in our conscience. What causes us to confuse.
It's a good book. You should read it.
Maybe much of what you remember, after all, may never have happened.
Book Description
Many thousands of readers consider Philip K. Dick the greatest science fiction mind on any planet. Since his untimely death in 1982, interest in Dick's works has continued to mount and his reputation has been further enhanced by a growing body of critical attention. The Philip K. Dick Award is now given annually to a distinguished work of science fiction, and the Philip K. Dick Society is devoted to the study and promulgation of his works.
This collection includes all of the writer's earliest short and medium-length fiction (including some previously unpublished stories) covering the years 1952-1955. These fascinating stories include We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, The Cookie Lady, The World She Wanted, and many others.
"A useful acquisition for any serious SF library or collection". -- Kirkus Reviews
"The collected stories of Philip K. Dick is awe inspiring". -- The Washington Post
"More than anyone else in the field, Mr. Dick really puts you inside people's minds". -- Wall Street Journal

cool book but title story is waaaaay to short.......2007-09-12
all of the stories in this one are good sci-fi stories. unfortunatle the title story for which i bought the book was only like 13 pages long:( We can remember it for you wholesale was the story on which the movie TOTAL RECALL was based on.
Early work shows promise.......2007-05-28
The forward said that this collection of short stories was PKD's early work and it shows. I had problems with some of his endings but found the majority of the stories enjoyable. I should also mention that not all of the stories are really science fiction. I am, however, looking forward to reading some of the later works by (...) to see the development of the author.
The Evolution Of Dick's Short Stories.......2007-04-03
In May of 1987 Underwood-Miller published a five volume set titled "The Collected Stories of Philip K. Dick", with the second volume being subtitled "Second Variety". In September of 1990 the Carroll Group republished the second volume with a few of changes including changing the subtitle to "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale". In addition to the change of title, they removed the title story from the original volume and replaced it with the new title story. This was probably done to take advantage of the release of the movie "Total Recall" which was based on the story. The last change they made was to move the story "Prominent Author" from the last story to the third story.
This is another great volume in the collection of Philip K. Dick's early short fiction. The original intent of the series was to present the stories in the order in which they were believed to have been written instead of the order in which they were published. However, by switching stories and changing the order in this book, the stories are now no longer in either order. There are 27 stories here, so it doesn't make sense to go through them all in detail, but there are several ones of note:
The title story, as mentioned earlier, was the basis for the movie "Total Recall", and for those familiar with the movie the first part of the story matches the first part of the movie very well. Douglas Quail is unsatisfied with his life and has a desire to go to Mars, he decides to check-out Rekal and is convinced to get the memories of a trip there as a secret agent implanted. At some point the two stories diverge though, and while the movie turns into an action film, the story takes a different twist at the end. The story was written in 1965 and first published in 1966, so it is much newer than the rest of the stories in this book which were mostly written and published in 1953 and 1954. In 1999, this story tied for 32nd on the Locus All-Time Poll for novelettes.
There are stories about our humanity such as "Progeny", which takes a look at what our society might be like if parents are taken out of the business of raising their children. There is "Human Is", which looks at what it really means to be human. "Breakfast at Twilight" involves at a family which is pulled into the near future to witness a war which appears to be the end of civilization. Lastly, there is James P. Crow, which looks at a future society which has forgotten that humans created robots and instead believes the reverse.
This is a very good collection, despite the decision to break away from the chronological order of the stories. The original collection was ranked 3rd on the Locus poll for collections in 1988. The diversity is greater here than in the first volume. Some of the stories may be a bit predictable, however that is largely due to other writers copying Dick's style and ideas. This volume leaves the reader looking forward to volume 3 and the continued evolution of Dick's writing.
Laboratory Of The Strange.......2003-04-02
Philip K. Dick's short stories are the best work of one of the greatest ( science) fiction writers in the history of the genre. His spare style leaves plenty for the imagination, as opposed to those writers who feel it necessary to fill their pages with endless technological detail. His staid characters are straight out of the Eisenhower Years, and are put through hoops such as no one has dreamed up before or since. Brilliant premises create psychological dilemmas that almost always resolve unexpectedly. As testament to his fertile imagination, five movies directly credit his short stories, and many more arguably rip him off. This five volume set comprises half of my ten most treasured books; if you like fiction, short stories, or genius social commentary, buy these stories.
First Book of his that I read.......2003-03-13
I must have missed something about this book. I can't believe that Minority Report and Total Recall, two movies that I did enjoy, came from this author. The stories seem to be missing something. Perhaps, this version should not have been the first works by this author for me to have read.

Book Description
Praise for Idea Mapping
"Nast's work in Idea Mapping enables those with creative minds to clearly lay out their thinking process and those who are more process-minded to become creative. If your organization is looking for a pragmatic, step-by-step guide to idea mapping, this is it."
--Chris Brown, Executive Vice President, DTE Energy Resources
"I have used idea maps for thirty years and have taught MBA students, employees, and my children how to harness their power. I strongly recommend this book and believe you will feel it to be one of the best investments you have ever made in your own growth."
--Stephen C. Lundin, coauthor, FISH!
"This is a book that everyone should read. It's an interactive, thought-provoking book about the brain and learning that will expand your mind. Nast, an accomplished and well-respected instructor, has guided me into a new realm of learning experiences and possibilities. I'm sure you will feel the same upon reading her insightful work."
--Simon Tai, CEO, Buzan Centre Taiwan and S&J Media Intergration Co. Ltd., Host of News Discovery on NEWS 98 Taiwan
"Nast shows you a revolutionary method to capture your thinking processes. Don't underestimate the simplicity of idea mapping because therein lies its genius."
--Scott Hagwood, four-time USA Memory Champion, author, Memory Power
"The ability to visually capture and organize thoughts and ideas has enabled millions of people around the world to do their work with greater creativity and productivity, run their businesses more strategically, and manage complex projects more efficiently--even map out a sales process or new product roll-out. Nast's very practical, readable book will get you quickly up to speed on one of the simplest but most powerful ways to organize your ideas, your work, and yourself."
--Mike Jetter, cofounder and CTO, Mindjet Corporation, coauthor, The Cancer Code
"The principles Nast writes about in Idea Mapping have become a staple for me over the past fourteen years. I was turned onto the concept of idea mapping in 1992 and have been a student and practitioner ever since. This has absolutely transformed the way I learn, design learning, and prepare for public speaking. I have never been more confident in my recall, knowing the content is nicely tucked away in my brain as it was designed to be. Get ready for a life-changing experience for yourself and those you influence."

1 Map Vs. 50 Pages... I'll take 1 Visually Appealing Map.......2007-08-22
I've been impressed by Jamie Nast and her philosophy of Idea Mapping. I especially like the concept that you can put a complex idea on one page, and Jamie is running with it. I don't know about you, but I'd rather see a business plan on one gorgeous map than 50 droning pages. I'm also happy that Jamie considers software a legitimate venue for mapping (I especially like MindManager, which Jamie endorses at her website). A resource idea mappers at all levels need to checkout.
Should be common knowledge for learners and workers........2007-07-30
Giving the book five stars because I didn't already know everything the book tells you, but feel like I should have. A pretty light read and, I would say, on a 6th grade reading level, but all of the concepts in the book should have been explained to me by teachers in my secondary education.
I have to assimilate volumes of information, and mapping the info out in the manner taught by this book is the perfect way to do it. This use of the technique is only one of the applications described in the book.
Help Put Some Colour Back into the Workplace - and Your Life.......2007-06-08
This is a most accessible book. Almost by stealth, it introduces people to a very powerful personal and business tool. Idea mapping can help put the fun and creativity back into work - and open your mind to a technique to access ideas you didn't know you had.
The book takes an evolutionary approach to teaching mapping. Concepts and rules are introduced, examples given and lessons reinforced - then on to the next concept. Happily it's in plain English, with no business consultant-speak, and is easy to read and comprehend. Rules are introduced at the beginning to help the novice get started - later on these are overturned as experts are encouraged to be flexible and take account of the situations they are in and the purpose of their maps.
The focus is very much on business applications of the tool. Guidance is given on how to approach creativity, strategy definition, planning, preparation for presentations, planning and drafting articles and papers, organising your schedule and even 1-1 meetings with staff.
One of the most powerful applications of idea mapping is in learning and memorising information, books and manuals - whether simply to help retain more for day-day application or for passing professional exams or achieving certification. Maps provide visual clues to aid memory and readers are encouraged to embelish their maps with colour and images to enhance retention and recall.
What really makes the difference here is the inclusion of many real life examples. These are not dusty academic references but actual maps produced by real people to help them achieve more in real life business situations. More examples can be found on the author's website - extending the value of the book.
One of the recurring themes throughout is to consider the purpose of a map before you start it. Often maps will be fast and furious scribbles by way of an instant brainstorm, such as last minute preparation for an imminent meeting. At other times they will be developed with care, full of colour and images, as an aid to learning and recall.
Jamie Nast also introduces us to situations where maps need to be refined, developed and shared - and for which mapping software is a must. Advice is given on how to choose your software, the benefits and concerns and when and how to use.
Elsewhere in the book Jamie also explains how teams can use mapping collaboratively. A software tool is invaluable for such work. As a professional facilitator, I use software idea mapping with my groups. The map is projected onto a wall and ideas are captured, reviewed, restructured and so on interactively until the group are happy. Because the map is captured electronically it can be distributed immediately after the session as a map or exported into a text file, presentation or project plan.
Jamie also gives us a tool to help with group brainstorming. If you have caught the increasing number of articles on 'why brainstorming does not work', you'll know that getting every person to shout out every idea they have is unrealistic. Idea mapping offers a perfect solution where the brainstorm begins with individuals getting their thoughts down on paper before sharing with the group.
As mentioned earlier, idea mapping puts mind mapping firmly in the realm of business. In addition to being a tool to help organisations and teams, it is also a personal tool which managers use to identify and review their personal goals, manage their schedules and prepare their individual plans and presentations. Many of us are becoming increasingly aware of the inter-relationship between work and the rest of our lives (Doh!). There are examples given in the book of how people have assessed their careers and life goals using these techniques.
This book offers real encouragement to people to try the technique and access the creativity and fun they could experience in even the crustiest of workplaces. It's easy to learn following Jamie's well thought out step-by-step guide. Inspiration is offered by the many real life examples included - all of which can be viewed in colour on Jamie's web site. I have come across people at work who have seen mind mapping as something to be used by creative, clever people. You don't have to be clever to use idea mapping but you might become so if you do.
Very little substance.......2007-04-29
This book is yet another example of 15 pages worth of substance spread over 240 pages of fluff. A person would be much better served downloading the trial version of "Mindmanager" software and just following the included tutorial. It will teach you everything this book has to offer in a fraction of the time.
A Very Helpful Book.......2007-02-15
I love this book. It has helped me with my to do lists, teaching classes, taking notes on lectures and with helping my children to study. In my teaching; it has allowed me to keep my notes on one page and then to see the transitions more clearly. When questions are asked I can quickly find my place and give precise answers without flipping through pages of notes. My oldest daughter was struggling with science, but with idea mapping techniques she is able to use her creativeness to map out her study notes and has had more success with her testing. When taking notes on a lecture, I find that I can remember the speaker's points much better than the traditional outline method because it's mapped out in pictures and words.
I really enjoyed the book because the author has the reader participate in each chapter, so by the end of the book you are able to make good idea maps and rarely have to review the book.
What I have learned is a life enhancing skill that I use at work (fleshing out new projects or by doing my performance reviews)and my personal life (helping my children study, teaching, studying my Bible or by mapping "to do" lists).
The book is great; if you participate you will learn. I use idea mapping every day and I believe I am even more creative because of it.
Although I do not use the software suggested in the book, one day I may give it a try when drawing my own idea maps becomes a little tiring or less useful. But that may be well into the future because for now I'm having the best time drawing them out myself.

A Real Treasure For Grandchildren.......2007-09-13
This book allows you to easily leave a legacy for grandchildren. Can include generic info such as geneology, as well as very personal memories/reflections and lots of space for those special pictures you hope would never be lost. It is truly a way to give a gift of love.
Wonderful gift!.......2007-07-11
Having a copy myself, I searched to find another for a newly 'grandmothered' friend- She loved it!
Grandmother Remembers.......2007-07-06
Great book and project for giving to your grandchildren. I have completed one book and plan on filling others. A nice gift for a new grandmother.
special keepsake. .......2007-05-13
My mom bought this book for my grandma to fill out for me when I was a baby. (1983) My grandma liked it so much that she bought six more over the years for my siblings and cousins. She added in as many photos as she could fit and some of the little pictures I drew for her when I was a kid. This book really means a lot to me.
Good Book.......2007-04-12
Good book. I order several for grandparents and great-grandparents. It is hard to find this kind of book. This is the best one I have found so far.
Book Description
Author of A QUICK BITE, Lynsay Sands continues with her popular vampire series starring the Argeneau family, this time involving a musical, sick vampires and a sexy PI.
Rule #1: Never get involved with someone who won't be there for you when the sun comes up.
Once bitten, twice shy, and sexy PI Jackie Morrisey wasn't going there again. Vincent Argeneau may be the hottest guy she's ever met, living or dead, but she's here to stop a killer from turning this vampire into dust, not to jump into bed with him.
Rule #2: Never kiss a vampire...it can be a pain in the neck.
Okay, so Vincent's had four hundred years to perfect his kissing skills, and he does look rather tempting when he runs around the house shirtless. He's also charming, protective...did we mention he can kiss? Jackie needs to be on her guard, or else she'll have to come up with a new rule:
If you're going to fall in love with a vampire, make sure it's a bite to remember.
Customer Reviews:
Another hot one..........2007-09-21
I just finished reading "Tall, Dark and Hungry" yesterday and finished "A Bite to Remember" today. I have to say that I really like Lynsay Sands and her style. Her books are funny, quick to read and have more plot that many romance novels I've read recently.
This book was even better than "Tall, Dark and Hungry" to me. There was more consistency in the plot and there was more suspence, which I liked. It also had me guessing until the very end how the story line (though not the romance) would turn out. I can't say I loved how it ended mainly because I would never have guessed it. (If you're looking for a mystery type book where you have all the pieces to figure it out - this ain't it).
I didn't give this a 5 star for a couple reasons. First, since I just read "T,D&H" yesterday, the book was really fresh in my mind and one of the love scenes in "ABTR" was just about an exact duplicate of one in "T,D&H". Hot, but a repeat. Also, a couple things don't get resolved in this as well as I would like. But, hey, maybe they'll bring them up in the next book. I can't wait to find out!
All in all, a good read.
Love the Argeneau's!!.......2007-09-05
I've read all of her Argeneau series to-date and I have loved everyone. The combination of wit and plot is great. The characters is this edition are no different. Funny, sexy and loveable, these vamps can naw on my neck anyday! A must read for Lynsay Sands readers and those who haven't been initiated into her series yet. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I don't believe in giving 5 stars TO EVERY BOOK I READ. This one is a strong 4.
5 Stars!.......2007-09-05
I love this Book and also all her other books. Vampire Books are my favorite to read.
not fluff?.......2007-01-03
I'm a little confused by all those reviews out there that describe this as a more serious and darker book. I can only assume they don't normally read dark books, especially if they thought this one was one. I would still classify this as fluff. Not that there is anything wrong with a fluff book. They are fun, easy, and quick. Sands most certaintly added in a bit of mystery. I.E. Jackie the P.I. and her partner, Tiny, are sent by Bastien to Vincent in California to discover who is sabotagoing his plays. Although, this is not centered in the writing. The writing mostly is about Jackie's past and why she hates immortals (vampires), Vincent wanting to find his life mate, and how Tiny really loves to cook. The mystery is not much a mystery except to the characters. The reader will figure things out rather quickly on their own. I did like the Itallian crew that came in to help save the day. I'm guessing Sands is getting ready to move on to another family of males. I can't wait to read about the twins, they sound delightfully sexy. I was a bit disappointed. Vincent being the vampire, I was expecting it to be funnier. There was only two times I found the writing cute enough to smile and neither was due to Vincent. One-the twins, Two-the pharmacy delivery boy. You'll see.
A Little Darker Than Previous Books...But.......2006-12-20
I really did enjoy it. It's a very quick read. I'm not going to write a plot summary since others on Amazon have already did this. I enjoyed the interaction between the characters. However I did feel like there were too many new characters introduced. I wish Ms. Sands would have stayed with just a couple, but I think she wanted to mention some others for future books. I did however enjoy that she made this book a little darker than the others. I enjoy vampire fiction and her previous light hearted books gave me a break but this touch of darkest keeps my interest. I did however feel the plot was simple to figure out and for that I can't give this book 5 stars. I do recommend this book to others looking for something quick, easy and fun to read. It's definitely not a dark, brooding, philosophical vampire book. Enjoy.
Book Description
In Character is Destiny, McCain tells the stories of celebrated historical figures and lesser-known heroes whose values exemplify the best of the human spirit. He illustrates these qualities with moving stories of triumph against the odds, righteousness in the face of iniquity, hope in adversity, and sacrifices for a cause greater than self-interest. The tributes he pays here to men and women who have lived truthfully will stir the hearts of young and old alike, and help prepare us for the hard work of choosing our destiny.

Character - A Lost Art that McCain is trying to Revive .......2006-07-12
This is a good book. Not something you sit down and read but rather something you sit by the bed and read a chapter now and then. It's long but its worth the time. Took me a few months. You'll read about all kinds of real people and their courageous acts that seperate them from the normal. Everyone from Gandhi, to Shackleton, to Lord Nelson and Abraham Lincoln to Martin Luther King and Mother Teresa. I think there is 36 in all. The diversity is great since you read about all times in history and all kinds of situations and people. Loved it.
