Book Description

Women's recovery can differ from men's, and each person's recovery is in many ways unique. That's why Stephanie Covington has designed this workbook to help a woman find her own path-- and find it in terms especially suited to the way women experience not just addcition and recovery but also relationships, self, sexuality, and everyday life. Deepening and extending the lessons of a book that has helped countless women, this workbook makes "A Woman's Way through the Twelve Steps" that much more measured, meaningful, and clear. Unlike many "rewritten" Twelve Step interpretations for women, this guide works with the original Step language, preserving its spirit and focusing attention on its healing message. In sections devoted to each of the Twelve Steps, Covington blends narrative, self-assessment questions focused on a feminine definition of terms such as "powerlessness" and "letting go" guided imagery exercises, and physical activities.

The workbook is a wonderful companion to the book. I gain so much more understanding and insight to the 12 steps. Be sure to get both books, it is worth it!

5 out of 5 stars A woman's Way is a terrific guide.......2006-02-22

A Woman's Way Through the twelve steps workbook is a great tool to accompany Stephanie Covington's book "A Womans Guide through the Twelve Steps. The questions are insightful and to the point without being overwhelming. I have found these two books to be an immeasurable asset to working the twelve steps.

5 out of 5 stars Heads Up Ladies!.......2000-10-11

This is definitely a head's up and listen up for women in recovery....using this in conjunction with "A Womans' Way Through the Twelve Steps" is a sure way to add to any other 12 step program that you may be using. I am a person who has been in recovery for 10 years, and found that many women's issues were not being addressed and this combination is an absolute winner. It can be used by yourself, working with a sponsor or in a group ..some wonderful "aha's" have been experienced and so many women helped in this process. Read it...do it....you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars A Woman's Spirit.......2007-01-07

Out of all the mediatation material I have used I find this is the most focused on taking care of the inner child in me. That child caused me to run in fear and procrastinate on taking care of what I need to do for me. This mediatation guide has empowered me to take better care of me on a daily basis. This is very wonderful. I ordered several to give as gifts.

Book Description

Research indicates one out of 13 Americans suffers a drinking problem and four problem drinkers exist for every "hard core alcoholic". It is one of our country's most significant health issues and a pervasive secret epidemic. Those affected are desperate for help but do not fit the alcoholic profile. So instead of seeking help, they suffer in silence.

In My Way Out, Jewell describes her history as a highly functional alcoholic and her decades of research in battling her addiction. Written in collaboration with Dr. Linda Garcia, MD, the search ultimately led her to develop a program calling upon experts in multiple fields.

Jewell's therapy is based upon a 2002 double blind study published in The Lancet, a highly esteemed British medical journal, which reported results of a medication that ameliorated craving in drinkers. Having tried and failed a "simple pill" approach herself with another prescription drug, Jewell took it one step further, integrating a powerful self-hypnosis program, nutritional supplementation, and other essential elements, creating an incredibly effective, easy-to-follow system, the results of which have startled even the most conservative practitioners within the medical community.

In what may become the hottest recovery book to hit the market in years, My Way Out shows readers how their craving can be curbed immediately and easily in the privacy of their own homes; why a multi-faceted approach is extraordinarily more effective than a single-modality solution; that drinkers don't need to attend AA if they're not comfortable doing so; and that when appropriate, moderation (social drinking) is an acceptable strategy for problem drinkers if they are provided the proper tools and treatment.

Jewell broke all the rules when, as a lay person, she developed an effective program that finally offers hope to alcohol dependent individuals. And she did the same when writing My Way Out, a book that crosses genres as a self-help, autobiographical, research, and motivational read. Given the overwhelming success of those who underwent the program, she was surprised to learn that traditional book agents and reviewers wouldn't touch it. But if the email pouring in to the publisher from early test subjects whose lives have been transformed by this extraordinary program is any example, there's no question My Way Out will become a standard text on the shelves of people truly motivated for a life change, or of those who seek to help others affected by an addiction they have been powerless to control.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A must read!!!.......2007-05-15

I have read every book I could find on alcohol recovery and addiction and I can honestly say that this book is the one that changed my life. I never considered myself to be an alcoholic but I knew I was a problem drinker, and the beauty of this program is that it allows for either abstinence or moderated drinking. It addresses the one issue that I found lacking in so many other recovery programs and that is feeding the brain the nutrients and amino acids that we have depleted from our bodies and brains from overdrinking. I found that once I fed myself what I was lacking the cravings for alcohol reduced dramatically. The other aspects of the program described in the book have also been so important in my journey for moderation including the hypnotherapy CDs and light exercise.

I cannot recommend this book enough if you are wanting to make a change in your drinking habits. Really great stuff!!

4 out of 5 stars Very Easy to Read.......2007-05-12

I think this book is a great resource for people that are serious about severly limiting or abstaining from drinking completely. The drawback for me was taking yet another medication and supplements when I already have a complicated regimin due to other medical conditions. I rated it a 4 instead of a 5 for this reason but still seems like a great program.

5 out of 5 stars My Way Out .......2006-09-15

This is a complete educational program with on line support. Several methods are described to become completely abstinent with alcohol or to moderate your drinking. Subtypes of alcoholics are identified. The use of the newest medications is discussed. There is a nutritional program and a hypnotherapy program. I have found the program to be successful in moderating my drinking. The hypnotherapy program is particularly helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You Roberta Jewell.......2006-09-01

Finally a light at the end of a very dark tunnel called alcoholism.
I was never going to AA and I knew it. While searching online for any possible alternative treatments for my addiction I came across the "My Way Out" website. I joined the community and bought the book. My life has been changed forever. Thank You Roberta Jewell!

5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Book.......2006-08-30

This book is a must read for anyone who has a problem with alcohol or who knows someone who is struggling with alcohol. It offers insight, hope and support. Roberta shares her personal struggle with alcohol and her desire to change her life. Her story is not only inspiring it is told in an honest way and offers real life advise on how to stand up to addiction. Of all the books I have read on the subject of addiction this one is the best.

Book Description

Women and girls are now becoming addicted at greater rates than ever before-and until very recently women in recovery relied on treatment models based solely on work with men. Harvard addiction and trauma expert Lisa M. Najavits, PhD offers a program to help women explore the often-overlooked problems associated with their alcohol and drug addictions-- such as body image, trauma and violence, relationships, stress, and thrill-seeking. She explores how women differ from men in their addiction and recovery, and conveys a supportive tone to help them embark on the journey to healing.

Without this book, I would still be using drugs. This is one of the few books I've read that allowed me to really look at issues of gender in recovery. I did all of the exercises, and each one brought new insights and knowledge. Every once in a while I go back to them. Thank you, Dr. Najavits!

1 out of 5 stars Concerning.......2005-03-08

Judging from the other reviews of this book, I guess you either love it or hate it. I fall into the negative camp unfortunately. There were parts that seemed distant and unrealistic. On the whole not a very moving book. There are plenty of other great texts on this topic to choose from. Don't waste your time here.

5 out of 5 stars truly inspiring.......2004-04-04

i read this after reading this author's other book; with each one, i felt incredibly moved and helped. i'd recommend this to anyone (female or male) with a substance abuse problem.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2003-07-26

I have been struggling with various addictions, including relationships and love addiction, for many years. I found this book super-helpful. It took me down a new path, and gave me some ideas that really helped. I'd recommend it to anyone with an addiction problem.

Book Description

Recovery is not a man's world, and yet to a woman it can sometimes seem that way. Geared specifically to that woman, this book brings a feminine perspective to the Twelve Step Program, searching out the healing messages beneath the male-oriented word. Based on an open exploration and a flexible interpretation of the Twelve Steps, this new perspective takes into account the psychological development of women as it relates to addiction and recovery, as well as the social and cultural factors that affect women in particular. Acknowledging that recovery raises special issues for women--from questions about sexuality, relationships, and everyday life to anxieties about speaking up at mixed-gender meetings--"A Woman's Way through the Twelve Steps " focuses directly on the feminine experience of addiction and healing. The author explores the Twelve Steps one by one, reiterating each in its traditional language, then explaining and illustrating it in a way that highlights a woman's experience--empowering the reader to take ownership of her own recovery process as well as her growth as a woman.

5 out of 5 stars This book has provided help and understanding for many women in recovery.......2007-07-27

The language of the 12Steps, writen over 70 years ago, primarily for male alcoholics is a tried and true series of 'suggestions' that have seen many men and women find sobriety and a better way of life. A Woman's Way Through the Twelve Steps is very faithful to the 12 Steps as written in the Big Book but 'plumps out' the language in a way that is helpful and speaks to the spiritual and emotional needs of women. We have used this book in several groups and found the content to be so rich that we have to often take the Steps in two or three sessions. Its a gift!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Terribly Disappointing.......2007-02-12

I read this book for a class on family violence. I have to say I did not like it. The author comes across as a spoiled rich girl who married a man for superficial reasons and then stayed with him because she wanted to keep up appearances. It's not heartfelt or emotional. She needs to always be a victim. She sells her late father's gold chains to get money despite the fact that she has $10,000 from her mother set aside. She then tells her husband that she sold the chains to make him feel guilty about it. She plays mind games like this with him and says and does questionable things with her children like dressing up as a dead Nicole Brown Simpson, slathering herself with fake blood, making her kids cry, and leaving the babysitter to explain the situation. She also tells the kids Daddy hit her. Why would you heap your huge adult problems on little children? I can't help but feel that she exaggerated and flat out lied in some parts of the book to make a more compelling story. This book is crap. Don't read it.

3 out of 5 stars Author went through hell.......2004-05-23

I am not an abused wife or battered woman, but I can still appreciate what the author went through. She gives the reader a mostly detailed journey through her personal hell. Having said that I find it puzzling that she would choose to go to a costume party as Nicole Brown and OJ Simpson, complete with ketchup on her neck. It was in terrible taste and the author tries to explain it by saying "the reality behind the charade was too important for me to abandon". Then she goes to tell that others at the party thought it was in bad taste and her italicized comments are "that they missed the point." Not surprisingly they did, didn't they. Apparently, she thought they would immediately realize she was abused? She also admits her two youngest children were quite disturbed seeing her dressed like that and she told them it was a game and left it to the babysitter to explain. I, for one, don't look for hidden meanings in Halloween costumes and since Ms. Weldon stressed her love and devotion to her children and how she didn't want them affected by the abuse, I find her attitude about the costumes and her children very strange to say the least.
When she finally exposed her husband and divorce proceedings began, she lamented that hers would be the only children at the Xmas plays and school events without a father. What planet is she from? Does she not know the divorce statistics? I found some of these comments rather whiney and self serving.
She complains in the book of the duties of a single parent, oops, sorry, Double Parent. Ms. Weldon wants to make sure we understand her trials and tribulations. I understand that more falls on the shoulder of the custodial parent, but she certainly isn't the only Double Parent either. She has many family members and friends close by and her family stepped in to help her financially.
I understand that it is difficult for women to leave an abusive relationship and she writes that she is glad she stayed 9 years. Once again, I am puzzled that as devoted a mother as she is, she finds it okay to have put her three children at risk in this situation.
I'm sure I am going to be chastised for my criticims of Ms Weldon's book and I certainly don't mean to trivialize what she and other women have gone through. These are simply my observations.

5 out of 5 stars The real deal.......2004-02-18

Michele Weldon does a magnificent job describing her harrowing journey through domestic violence, and she does so with clarity and unflinching honesty. Domestic violence crosses all socio-economic and cultural boundaries. Just as no two women are alike, no two violent marriages are identical; Ms. Weldon explains her own experience in such a way that anyone living through this hell will see some element of her own situation.

The cyclical nature of abuse, the cliche questions ("What did you do to make him mad?" "Why did you stay so long," etc.), the cliche assumptions (she suffers from low self-esteem, HE suffers from low self-esteem, etc.)are all carefully addressed.

By telling her story, Ms. Weldon has undoubtedly opened a door--even if it is just a crack!--for someone who really needs to know that there is hope for starting over. Michele did it...I did it...YOU CAN DO IT TOO.

5 out of 5 stars Great for a woman who has left an abusive marriage.......2002-11-08

Thank you Michele Weldon for writing your journey through living and leaving an abusive husband. ---

Her writing is encouraging and honest. The writing style kept me reading. The way she put into words the joy of leaving the cycle of abuse despite the hardship that it may bring is just great!

5 out of 5 stars This book could save many women from domestic abuse.......2002-10-26

Michele Weldon is an incredible writer. Each word, sentence, and thought was so rich and clear that I could see the picture, and know the depths of her inner experience. Throughout the book she composes the story of her life in such an interesting way that I was often left awestruck. Anyone could benefit from this book, whether or not they have survived abuse. She demonstrates how her life was changed in the aftermath of domestic violence and divorce.

5 out of 5 stars What a Testimony, Stanice!!!!.......2006-11-03

I Say a Prayer for Me was an excellent book. I had actually purchased it locally about 2 years ago and had not gotten around to reading it until we were deciding which book to read next in by Sisterhood Ministries group. I suggested this book, and everyone including myself, could not believe what a great book it was. To read about Stanice's life and her struggles with what God would have her to do, was true testimony of how Faith can turn your life around. After we finished the book, I ordered additional copies from Amazon and gave them to my sisters as gifts, and they also raved about how good this book was and have since purchased additional copies and given them to their friends. Great work, Stanice!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Just AWESOME!.......2005-10-11

Whew, what can one say after reading this book!?! To read this woman's stories of what she experienced and to see her now; only God can create such a transformation in one's life. I laughed and I cried as I read through the chapters. Some reminded me of my own experiences. This is a MUST read! If you are in need of any type of healing, it will definitely take place in the pages of this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Her life is an inspiration. She taught me to consider God in all things no matter how small I may think it is. Her story of her California trip was great and really taught me to witness to anyone and everyone. This was my selection for my bookclub and I was the toast of the day. We all enjoyed this one.

A Step-by-Step Guide to a Powerful Process for Healing Women with Addiction

While there is a wealth of material available for the treatment of addiction, most of the information is based on research focused on men-not women. Helping Women Recover fills this void and offers a program specifically designed to meet the unique needs of women who are addicted to alcohol and other drugs. The Helping Women Recover program offers counselors, mental health professionals, and program administrators the tools they need to implement this healing process in group therapy settings or with individual clients.

"A clear and comprehensive guide. Covington provides addiction professionals with a precise and detailed curriculum based on her knowledge, caring, and years of experience addressing the special needs of addicted women."—Monessa Overby, vice president, clinical services, Betty Ford Center

"An excellent tool for integrating women's issues with relapse prevention therapy. Helping Women Recover is practical, easy to use, and helps guide clinicians to work on the deeper recovery issues with addicted women."—Terence T. Gorski, founder, clinical director, National Relapse Prevention Certification School

"A well-written, thorough, eminently practical, and wise curriculum for all women-therapists and clients, teachers and students. She combines a deep understanding of female psychology with the realities of male-oriented culture to create a supportive model that emphasizes positive self-exploration and discovery. Covington provides a detailed teaching map-what to say, when, and why. Novice and experienced counselors can run with this outstanding plan. Underlying the text is the assurance that the author understands women, what safety means to them, how important it is as a base for healing, and how to achieve it."—Stephanie Brown, director, The Addictions Institute and author of Treating Alcoholism

"A comprehensive, practical, and extraordinarily valuable guide for anyone involved in creating, implementing, or facilitating women's treatment programs."—Janet L. Surrey, founding scholar, Jean Baker Miller Training Institute, Stone Center, Wellesley College

"Helping Women Recover is vital to our work with the chemically dependent female-and there is no one who understands gender-specific work better than Stephanie Covington!" —Claudia Black, author of It Will Never Happen to Me

"Helping Women Recover is an exciting curriculum for women in which the facilitator is given clear and detailed instructions. To participate in these sessions would be a healing and revealing experience."—Anne Geller, associate professor of clinical medicine, Columbia University and past president, American Society of Addiction Medicine

This book changed my life. I read it when I was 15 years old. I am 30 now and I still talk about it. I found the movie on DVD and was very impressed. Emma Harte gave me the strength to be something great.

I read this book over 13 years ago, and I tell you, it still remains one of my faves. Even though I was barely 13 when I read it, the book gave me hope and made me believe that anyone could become something, no matter their background and especially like Emma's.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars Happy Hours.......2006-07-31

This book is a "must read" for every young woman. The book is intelligent, an easy read and deals with the subject of women and alcoholism in a realistic and credible fashion.

    1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2005-08-20

I was really hoping I would read stories about different woman struggling with alcohol. Instead each chapter has only a paragraph about a woman's struggle and then spends the rest of the chapter discussing and dissecting it. I have not been able to finish the last few chapters because I get too bored while I am reading it.

4 out of 5 stars She wrote the book for her sister, an alcoholic.......2005-06-09

Happy hours by Devon Jersild, is a book I would recommend to any woman who struggles with drinking at some point in their lives. It is written because AA is tailored towards men. Most recovery programs are, and they are sometimes hard for a woman to grasp the different thinking and tailored approach, alot of twelve step and treatment programs have.

We are unique in our disease, and alcohol effects women in different ways then men. This is described in the book, it tells us how we can learn from stories of other women. I gained strength in reading what each woman had gone through.

Some of the reading is a little technical about statistics and terminology that would be better suited for a chemical dependancy counselor, but I got through that short part and was able to finish the book.

5 out of 5 stars An Intimate, Heartfelt Book.......2002-08-15

I read HAPPY HOURS with a growing sense of relief. At last somebody has looked at a serious issue for women with a strong inside view, and with understanding. Jersild's sister was an alcoholic, and she came to this subject from the experience of despair so familiar to member's of an alcoholic's family. Her slow discovery of the complexity of the issue is part of the book's narrative, which looks at this issue from many angles and incorporates myriad voices. This is a thorough study of a horrible problem, and readers who suffer from alcohol abuse or who have members of their families who do will find enlightenment in these pages.

1 out of 5 stars an outsider attempts to look in.......2002-08-06

I appreciate the effort here by the sister of an alcoholic,
a concerned family member who is bewildered and cannot understand the illness.

However, I read the entire book, and I felt this author really
did not uncover anything useful for those who suffer from
addictive, compulsive behavior, or for those who are trying
    to help people that do.

Addiction is extremely complex, and the stories in this book just
did not give me any enlightment at all into the behaviour. It seemed straight reporting by an outsider who really does not
understand. To put it bluntly, it was very clinical, and had
very little soul. I know this writer loves her sister, and means well, but this book shows little insight into the very difficult
process of unraveling the myriad reasons for destructive addictive behavior, and truly difficult work it takes to reverse
years and even decades of this behavior in many women who were
denied any sympathy in our society, or any support, since it
was considered so shameful, and such a sign of weakness.

The most valuable part of the book points out the years of hiding
that women suffer from alcoholism in numbers almost as great as
men, and that this was kept a secret. Also that women process
alcohol differently, and suffer harm from it more quickly than
men, but I don't think this is rocket science.

I also thought it was quite interesting that the author points out that AA was founded by well-to-do white males with big egos,
and that it is possible many women have problems with the basic suppositions of the 12 steps. Their big deal is that by relinquishing your personal power, you are admitting you can't control everything. Most women never grow up with these thoughts in their heads to begin with, since most women are taught from day one that they have no power.

I am sorry to disagree with the other reviews, but I gave this
    book away.
