pretty good book.......2007-01-10
Good beginning and ending. Kind of lost me in the middle. A bit touchy, feelie.
A good basic Introduction to TCM.......2006-11-10
For anyone looking for a basic, easy to understand introduction to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I can highly recommend this book. It focuses mainly of the five element theory of TCM, and it manages to explain a very complex concept in clear terms. It has nice self-test chapters to help the reader figure out their own predominant elements, and also offers good advice on simple herbal supplements and dietary advise based on the patterns.
However, it is very basic. If you are looking for more in-depth information on Traditional Chinese Medicine, or if you already have a basic understanding of the five elements, The Web that Has No Weaver is probably a better book to read, since it explains not only the five elements, but also the organ networks and their associated functions and spirits in much more depth.
I usually recommend Between Heaven and Earth to people who want to gain a basic understanding and introduction into the Chinese Taoist Philosophy that is the basis of Traditional Chinese Medicine. I think it is a great introductory text, and will make subsequent, more complexly written books much easier to understand.
The book is a mish mosh.......2006-09-06
It's too bad this book is a mish mosh and that neophytes in Chinese medicine are not going to know this. Some of the material is very standard and authentic, but a lot of it is the authors' own invention. So be careful with this. If you want the real deal, this is not the book you want. A better introduction to standard Chinese medicine is Kaptchuk's classic, The Web That Has No Weaver.
Excellent Guide to the Novice.......2005-10-04
I am a novice in the art of TCM and I do not speak or read chinese. This was an excellent guide for me in my studies in preparation to attend school for TCM and also how to get some practical benefit from my Chinese herbs. This was an Excellent Guide for the Novice.
An excellent introduction to the tenets of TCM.......2005-08-10
I recommend this book to all of my clients! With so much focus being placed on alternative therapies in health care, it staggers me that so much of the general public still thinks that acupuncture is for idiots acting as a human pincushion. While it is far from an instruction manual (which was never its intent), Between Heaven and Earth gives laypeople a simplified and elegant explanation of an ancient science. If you're looking for a definitive education in TCM, go to a university and get a degree. If you want an introduction to wellness through Chinese Medicine, read this book.
Book Description
Rabbi Greenberg's new book makes an invaluable contribution to interfaith conversation. He calls for Christians and Jews to come together in their continuously evolving partnership with Goddual covenants that demand "openness to each other, learning from each other, and a respect for the distinctiveness of the ongoing validity of each other."
Now, when the resurgence of anti-Semitism poses a threat to Jews here and around the world, this powerful book presents a new opportunity to heed the call first put forward by Rabbi Greenberg nearly four decades ago: a call for people of all faiths and cultures to work together to create a world in which everyone can live with dignity and equalitythe deserved inheritance of a humanity created in the image of God.
In the first half of his book, Rabbi Greenberg takes us on his personal journey to a rethinking of Christianity, which ultimately gave rise to his belief that Christianity, Judaism (and every religion that works to repair the world and advance the triumph of life) are valid expressions of the pact between God and humankind. In Part 2 he brings together for the first time his seven most important essays on the new encounters between Judaism and Christianity.
Customer Reviews:
Exceptional.......2006-02-24
Rabbi Greenberg's book is exceptionally well written. Even more important, the Rabbi gives us new and insightful ways to frame the Jewish/Christian dialogue. He and Blu Greenberg are pioneers in so many aspects of Jewish thought, and this book is just one more example.
A radical rethinking of Jewish- Christian relations .......2005-09-04
Rabbi Irving (Yitz) Greenberg has been for close to half- a - century one of the most caring and courageous of Jewish thinkers. For many he is the Reform and Conservative Jews' Orthodox Rabbi. For some he is the person who has gone so far astray from traditional positions so as to be no longer part of Orthodoxy at all. Yet even his most fierce opponents would find it hard to deny that he has been a tireless worker for the Jewish community and world through these years. And that he has in his thought addressed important questions others dared not approach.
One area in which he has pioneered is in Jewish- Christian relations. In this present book he tells in a remarkable autobiographical first- chapter the story of his efforts in these directions. He in this chapter outlines positions he has been developing for over forty years, positions which involve a radical rethinking of the Jewish relationship to Christianity.
This rethinking comes out of his historical knowledge of Jewish- Christian relations, and his understanding of the Christian roots of the Holocaust. More than anything else Rabbi Greenberg seems to be working for a kind of `tikkun' in Jewish- Christian relations that will prevent disaster in the future.
What he proposes is a relationship which goes beyond mere tolerance. He proposes that both Judaism and Christianity each other as valid religious responses, as valid Covenant religions.. Both religions as he understands it have their task, and their chosen place. Both present visions of Divine Redemption which have and can help bring about tikkun olam, a better world, a world more filled with life and goodness. For him Judaism is the senior partner, with its own special niche and relation to God. And Christianity is the religion which has spread the vision of one moral God to a vast share of humanity.
Rabbi Greenberg understands the terrible asymmetry in Jewish - Christian relations historically, in terms of persecutor- persecuted. But his thought is directed toward creating of a better future. He in this stresses the value of the kind of dialogue that he himself has engaged in for so many years with his Christian counterparts. And in fact the work concludes with the responses of some of his distinguished Christian colleagues, James Carrol, Michael Novak, Mary C. Boys, and Krister Stendhal. And Rabbi Greenberg is especially grateful to the insights and help given him and wife Blu through the years by Roy and Alice Eckhardt.
Rabbi Greenberg has always been an optimistic and positive thinker. And so he believes that despite the fact that the Jewish people today are barely holding their own in number while Christianity is a growing faith of close to two billion believers that Judaism's special message will appeal to that portion of mankind who needs what it alone can give, the demanding Torah- inspired life.
As a master teacher of Torah who has educated many of the Jewish leaders of today Rabbi Greenberg believes that a more learned and educated Jewish people will strengthen its unique covenant relation with God, while being able to understand the unique relation of Christianity to God.
This position is one which I doubt many Jewish thinkers will adopt. However in espousing this position Rabbi Greenberg does show a way for religious believers Jewish and Christian alike to live in mutual respect and dignity.and work together toward the making of a better world for all mankind.
Rabbi Greenberg opens a path to God.......2005-02-03
Over the years Rabbi Greenberg has shared his love of the Jewish people and Torah with thousands of readers. His love for God and God's people may have driven a wedge between some in the Jewish community and himself, but Rabbi Greenberg stays true to God by reaching out to the Jewish community once again and the Christian community. Christians and Jews both worship and love the same God. Christianity has taken the Jewish God and made him known worldwide. While medieval Christianity was cruel to non-believers and especially Jews, the Christian community can join with Jews in the most important mission of all, repairing the creation and presenting it to God shining and restored. The Jewish people view the mitzvah (Jewish Law) as the way to "tikkun olam-repairing the broken creation" and this book shows Christians how they too can join with the Jewish people to accomplish God's work.
As a convert to Judaism, I grew-up in the Christian community. I have found the same God, just different emphasis. Perhaps it is time for the Christian community to rise-up to the challenge and see Judaism as their partner in the work of God. And perhaps, it is time for the Jewish community to attempt to do the work of God with their Christian partners.
This book is a challenge to both faith communities. Rabbi Greenberg will certainly create controversy, but he will also, if given the chance, make both Christians and Jews think about their roles in THIS world, how they can help repair the insanity of poverty, illness, and senseless violence.
Rabbi Greenberg is, as always, ahead of the times. His challenge to individual Christians and individual Jews is a much needed wake-up call. I highly recommend this book. My prayer is that all of God's people finally learn to do His work and bring their love, passion and hard work to task at hand. Thank you Rabbi Greenberg for a thought provoking book. I am certain that God is smiling.
Book Description
Between Heaven and Earth explores the relationships men, women, and children have formed with the Virgin Mary and the saints in twentieth-century American Catholic history, and reflects, more broadly, on how people live in the company of sacred figures and how these relationships shape the ties between people on earth. In this boldly argued and beautifully written book, Robert Orsi also considers how scholars of religion occupy the ground in between belief and analysis, faith and scholarship.
Orsi infuses his analysis with an autobiographical voice steeped in his own Italian-American Catholic background--from the devotion of his uncle Sal, who had cerebral palsy, to a "crippled saint," Margaret of Castello; to the bond of his Tuscan grandmother with Saint Gemma Galgani.
Religion exists not as a medium of making meanings, Orsi maintains, but as a network of relationships between heaven and earth involving people of all ages as well as the many sacred figures they hold dear. Orsi argues that modern academic theorizing about religion has long sanctioned dubious distinctions between "good" or "real" religious expression on the one hand and "bad" or "bogus" religion on the other, which marginalize these everyday relationships with sacred figures.
This book is a brilliant critical inquiry into the lives that people make, for better or worse, between heaven and earth, and into the ways scholars of religion could better study of these worlds.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, easy read.......2007-05-14
Orsi's book is an interesting intro to some of the issues facing religious studies scholars. It presents the issues of how to study a religious community and what difficulties arise in doing so. For the reader less interested in the academic field of religious studies, there is still a wealth of information on religion in America, especially the history and development of American Catholicism.
The book is accessible to a wide audience and is the kind of work that makes for good dicussions with a variety of different types of groups. I will add, however, that for those who are already sufficiently aware of the problems of doing anthropological research on religious communities, it offers little that is new or insightful.
Book Description
Talking to paper is talking to the divine. Paper is infinitely patient. Each time you scratch on it, you trace part Of yourself, and thus part of the world, and thus part of the grammar of the universe. It is a huge language, but each of us tracks his or her particular understanding of it."
From A Walk Between Heaven and Earth
Unlike any other guide to journal writing, A Walk Between Heaven and Earth is itself written as a personal journal and as a meditation on the flow of creation. Burghild Nina Holzer demonstrates that the creative process is in fact a large, ongoing movement in our lives and that we may gradually discover the pattern and direction of it by trusting whatever it is we choose to confide to the page. She helps would-be writers recognize the power and importance of opening themselves to the present moment and recording whatever they find there. Holzer's book is both inspiration and model. It will appeal not only to those who wish to explore the creative process as a mystical path, but to all who desire to express themselves through writing.

It will keep you going.

I just don't get it........2004-09-14
I love journalling books and have a wide collection of them. This is the first one I have started but been unable to finish. I felt really disappointed after reading the glowing reviews for this book on the website - but I'm afraid I just don't get it. The "entries", which I feel were very contrived, taught me nothing and sometimes seemed so forced and self conscious that I found myself scoffing at them. Ms Holzer herself says that she kept another journal whilst writing this one - I think it was that fact that made me realise what a contrived thing the "journalling journal" was. We would have been better served if she had published extracts from her "real" journal, as there are definate signs of her being a fine writer. The only true to life parts of the book were when she was talking about the tragic death of her brother - and even then, you felt that the real story of her loss was being recorded somewhere else.
I'm sorry if it's just me who doesn't understand what the author is trying to do here, but I got the impression that she wasn't very clear herself of what she expected the outcome to be.
Read and you will sigh..........1999-09-14
Who would've thought to write a book about the journaling process in a journal format? Duh! Full of epiphany after epiphany and lovely contemplation.
This book made my writing more exciting and my life more fun.......1999-05-22
A Walk Between Heaven and Earth is a great book not only for creative writers, but for everyone who wants to lead a more satisfying life. Holzer's journal entries transmit a deep understanding of what it means to be a writer and what it means to be fully alive. I felt gently and powerfully guided by her personal life experiences to break away from the analytical rules that have kept me from writing what really moves me. And my own writing process has become ten times more exciting than it ever was in years of college classes and work as a magazine editor. This book has helped me embrace my own pain and joy in a way I had never considered.
Book Description
Heaven isn’t only about the future. It has everything to do with life on earth—life “in between.” Jonathan Edwards understood this well. His writings are full of his thoughts on heaven and how those thoughts should make a difference in our lives.
This book focuses on key sermons by Edwards, showing readers how his insights can be applied to the challenges of living the Christian life in the twenty-first century. Edwards reminds us of our duty to live on earth in light of heaven and to endeavor to bring the realities and the beauty of heaven to earth—even if only in miniature. This book is for all believers wondering how to live on earth with a view of heaven, and those familiar with Edwards’s works will have a special appreciation for this study.
“No one spoke or wrote more eloquently than Jonathan Edwards on the earthly responsibilities of those whose citizenship was in heaven. And no one has done a better job than Stephen Nichols in making Edwards’s thoughts on this subject accessible to the church today. His insightful analysis of Edwards’s sermons on heaven is essential reading for those who’ve lost sight of the life-changing power of meditating on future glory. I highly recommend it.”
Dr. Sam Storms, Enjoying God Ministries
“Jonathan Edwards’s contagious vision of heaven on earth is compellingly captured by Stephen Nichols in this accessible book. It’s been said that some Christians are so heavenly-minded that they are no earthly good. On the other hand, it’s also the case that some are so earthly-minded that they are not fit for heaven. Nichols, following Edwards, argues that the solution to the errors of escapism and earthliness is not to find a happy medium, but rather to develop a radical new perspective that transforms both our vision of heaven and our life on earth. With Edwards as our guide, Nichols teaches us the biblical art of living the vision of heaven on earth.”

Heaven on Earth.......2007-03-12
A very easy read and great introduction to Jonathan Edward. Many practical pointers on living in between. We liked it so well we did a Sunday school class on it.
Become Heavenly Minded and of Earthly Good.......2006-08-30
It's easy for some people to become "so heavily minded they're of no earthly good," while others are more likely to be too earthly minded to be of no heavenly good. Scripture points us to a middle path, a way to live between the two worlds. Stehpen J. Nichols sheds light on this path through a collection of sermons by Jonathan Edwards in Heaven on Earth.
Through seven brief chapters Dr. Nichols explores a handful of Jonathan Edwards's sermons in an effort to explain what it means to live on earth with a vision of heaven. It includes themes of pilgrimage, citizenship, just action, waiting, and true happiness found in God's purposes for mankind. The book also includes an introduction on how to read Edwards' sermons, and an appendix containing an abridged version of the sermon "Heaven Is a World of Love."
This is a book that gets better as it goes, which makes its short length disappointing. I especially found the final two chapters to be insightful and though-provoking. Readers unfamiliar with Jonathan Edwards will learn much about his life as application of what he taught. While not an academically sophisticated work, Heaven on Earth will challenge every reader to make practical use of the theological truths it describes.
Excellent Readable Intro to Jonathan Edwards Life View.......2006-07-29
Heaven on Earth is a wonderful summary of an aspect of Jonathan Edwards's thinking and preaching - specifically, how to long for heaven and the next life, while living, serving and enjoying our time here on Earth. Nichols is a very clear and enjoyable writer, and the book is relatively brief, so I would highly recommend it - especially if you think an "old theologian" like Edwards has no practical relevance to our lives today. Some of the chapter topics include: Living as preparation for heaven; the meaning of "our citizenship is in heaven" and how it impacts our life here; working to make this world better as stewardship of God's creation; the struggle of waiting in our lives; and how to deal with the deaths of loved ones, and how to see our lives as a journey towards heaven.
Here's a good summary passage near the end of the book to give you an idea both of J.E.'s theology, and of Nichols' way of explaining it:
"Both in life and in death Edwards teaches us how to live the pilgrim life. He teaches us that as we make our way to heaven we should serve God and do what good we can. He teaches us that we should long for our heavenly home and that we should enjoy the foretastes of that home now." (pp. 105).
Nichols also gives an introductory section on how to read an Edwards sermon, and includes an appendix with the abridged text of an Edwards sermon, "Heaven is a World of Love" on 1 Cor. 13:8-10. Hopefully, as I know the author hopes, people after reading this book, will want to and feel able to tackle some of Edwards' actual writing. And anyone who does will be spiritually richer as a result-not because Edwards is so great, but because of his ability to describe the greatness and great love of our God and King. Highly recommended!

Book Description
"Between Heaven and Earth", the winner of the Yi Sang Literature Prize in 1996, is about a man, who, on his way to pay a visit of condolence, comes across a woman whose face is covered with the cold shadow of death. His memory of his own life having been saved by the sacrifice of his friend's precious life when he was nine, makes him suddenly change his destination and follow the woman to Wando on a snowy evening. He has a brief affair with the woman, who actually lured him to follow her in order to erase her previous life with a man who deserted her and left her pregnant. This moving story of a contingent relationship is permeated with the color of milky white, symbolizing life, and that color reigns over the black color of death. And the working of destiny in the human relationship unfolds against the backdrop of pansori, 'The Song of Simcheong' and the red camellias blooming in the white snow.

Delightful and Diverse Bird Tales from Afar.......2004-10-03
One bird tale each from the diverse countries of Australia, Norway, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and China is retold in this lovely collection. All of them are beautifully illustrated by Caldecott medalists Leo and Diane Dillon. The stylized art work has the feel of stain glass, with heavy outlines framing various shaped colored pieces and their complimentary shades and tones. Many of the pictures are full page size enhancing the effect of these highly ornate visuals. In all cases the illustrations match the action and mood of the story and help to reveal the personalities of the characters involved.
A wide range of human feelings and attributes are portrayed in these stories. In "The Disobedient Pelican Daughter," a story from Sri Lanka, we encounter the curious, bold and disobedient daughter of Goolayyahlee pelican. In the Norwegian tale "The Troll and the Scarf Made of Crows" we meet clever Olav who outwits the mischievous troll by using his knowledge of the habits of the familiar crows. "The Beautiful Quail" is a melancholy tale which takes place during a time of extreme drought in Sri Lanka. In a moving show of sympathy other creatures, recognizing that a world without quail would be keenly lacking, forsake their own needs to come to the aid of beautiful quail as she tries to lay her eggs under duress. "The Bird Who Sang Like a Warthog" comes from the African country of Matabeleland. Kumala, a good man, but a braggart and prone to jealousy, and Sibanda, a blind man with much insight are the main characters. Sibanda has a remarkable gift of being able to identify animals, especially birds, by their voices. Kumala is jealous, so much so that he tricks Sibanda and lies to him. The taunting cries of the birds-"liar, liar, liar...." drive Kumala insane. Kumala's recovery process and his wonderful symbolic gesture of atonement bring the story full circle as he rejoins his village. The last tale in the book, "The Swan-Scholar's Great Secret" is set in China at the foot of the Dragon Gorge Mountain. It tells the secret of the swan-ancestors of the people in the village of P'o-lo, and the unending love of family.
How the book came into being is an interesting story. Participants from eleven countries talking together at the International Folklore Workshop in 1989 and 1990 at the University of Maryland in College Park spoke of their profound homesickness for their birth countries. Folk stories were shared first in their native tongue and then in English and a decision was made to craft a book. A three and a half page afterword in the collection discusses how the idea progressed to reality and shows how deeply the participants felt during the process.

Book Description
As William Wordsworth said, "The world is too much with us." And as many of us have discovered, sometimes we are too much with the world. Joy Mills, author of Between Heaven and Earth: The Soul Purpose, helps us to discover our way out of the darkness into the light of self-discovery and purpose. Joy Mills realizes that our feelings and perceptions have a great impact on our lives and the lives of those around us. The principles within Between Heaven and Earth: The Soul Purpose guides us through a journey of enlightenment--a journey in which we can rise above anger, learn forgiveness, and awaken spiritually. Mills leads us through dangerous ground such as complacency, desensitization, and confusion. This eye-opening book is exceptionally thoughtful and provocative. The heart-touching messages Joy shares with readers in Between Heaven and Earth: The Soul Purpose have been life-changing for many readers. Joy writes, "When we realize that we can transcend all the rampant negative energies in and around us by using our own courage and fortitude to do so, we can see our plan of action: We know what to do; we possess courage. When we do what needs to be done, we possess fortitude: we do it. We know that we can listen to the Voice within and are then able to carry through with its positive, beneficial advice.

Extraordinary and Diverse Collection.......2007-02-10
I've been a fan of Ken Gire's artful and anointed writing for several years. However, upon opening this book, and realizing that it consisted largely, not of Gire's own words, but quotes and writings related to the subject of prayer...I was for a moment indecisive about whether or not to continue. I decided to trust the author and begin. And rather than it feeling like one entry after another in a huge devotional tome, the words began to jump off the page. Gire has collected writings and prayers from every continent, from writers, scholars, scientists, non-Christians and Christians alike, famous historical figures and the Bible itself (to name a few). The fact that these are arranged by themes is almost irrelevant to the sheer power of the words laid out on these pages. I already knew that Gire was a well-read individual himself because, in the very 1st book of his that I read, he introduced me to the genius of Frederick Buechner..now one of my favorite authors. But the sheer scope of the writings he has chosen for this book took my breath away. I felt as I was reading that I was discovering and uncovering some truly anointed stories/words of wisdom that I might never have encountered in my lifetime had it not been for this book. I had immediate favorites as I went through the book, but it became obvious to me that this is a volume that I will pick up again and again throughout my life. An amazing, amazing work and one that obviously is built on the rich and varied studies of this author. Ken Gire's life and love for the truth are displayed here on these pages in a most remarkable way.
THE BEST PRAYER COLLECTION EVER WRITTEN!!.......2005-04-30
I consider this book one of my favorite books about prayer and the necessity which drives men and women to God. Ken Gire presents a solid, user-friendly reference to some of the greatest quotes ever written or spoken by famous personalities such as C.S. Lewis, Abraham Heschel, and St. Francis of Assisi. This has to be one of the most beautiful books ever written or compiled on the subject of prayer! A classic in every sense of the word-it leaves me speechless each time I read it.
A constant companion for daily devotions!.......1999-02-13
This book has provided me with inspirational messages, prayers for times when nothing seem appropriate, prayers to share, and prayers to reflect upon.
Exhaustive prayer compilation well worth the money.......1998-12-28
Gire searches extensively to bring the reader the best tidbits of insight from the brightest Christian authors throughout the centuries. He has done the work that many of us wish we could do, if we only had the time. . .
