Book Description

An addictive, deeply enjoyable thrill ride on the frontier of the feral and feminine...a debut novel of astonishing imaginative power from the future queen of suspense.

Elena Michaels slips out of bed, careful not to wake her boyfriend. He hates it when she disappears in the middle of the night, and can’t understand why any normal woman would crave the small hours of the morning, the dark unsafe downtown streets. But Elena’s skin is tingling, the pent-up energy feels like it’s about to blow her muscles apart — she can’t put it off any longer. She loves to run at the edge of the city, but she doesn’t have time to get there. She has to slink into an alley, take off her clothes and hide them carefully, and make the Change.

Elena’s trying hard to be normal. She hates her strength, and her wildness, and her hunger for food, for sex, for running in the night, for the chase and the kill. She wants a husband, children...even a mother-in-law. Or at least that’s what she tells herself.

And then the inevitable happens. The Pack needs her. The Pack she loves and hates is under siege from a bunch of disreputable and ruthless mutts who are threatening to expose them all, breaking all the rules that have kept them safe. The loyalty of her nature calls her home, and into the fight, which tests just who Elena is: the wild woman or the wistful would-be human.

5 out of 5 stars Best werewolf story written in this genre.......2007-09-26

I could not put this book down once I started reading. Kelley Armstrong has created the richest, multi-layered, fascinating werewolf culture that I have ever read. Elena, the main character, is bitten by her fiance, who is a werewolf. Her journey from that point on is heartbreaking, horrifying and traumatic. It takes her ten years to come to terms with her new life and the fact that the man she loves did this to her. The relationship between Elena and Clay is fascinating. This may be paranoral fiction but how Elena deals with Clay is totally human. The emotions she has to fight through to accept her new life are terrifying. When the pack comes under attack she returns to help and and ultimately face issues about where she belongs in the world and with who. There is action, romance, believable decisions made by her when she decides these important issues, and a good mystery to be solved along the way. There is a blurbb on the cover that says "Armstrong is up there with the big girls of the genre like Laurell K. Hamilton--Kansas City Star. I feel Kelley Armstrong has far surpassed Laurell Hamilton right out of the gate. There is nothing this rich or believable in LKH books, especially of late. Ms. Armstrong is a better writer and she knows how to create a relationship between 2 characters that is fascinating along with a good mystery.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome ... MUST read for fans of the genre!!.......2007-09-24

If there was the ability to give a book more than five stars, I would do so for this series by Kelley Armstrong. I have now read the first six Otherworld Series books, all in the last few months. I love them. This novel features Elena, who is still coming to terms with having been made a werewolf 10 years ago. The story grips you and the writing moves the plot along at the perfect pace. I like a book that helps me really visualize the scenes like I'm watching a film in my mind. And this one does it. Heck, I even found myself wishing I could live at Stonehaven as I read it! It's witty, and laugh out loud humorous sometimes - thanks to Armstrong's keen writing style. This book and the rest of the series is a must for anyone who is remotely interested in the fantasy genre or werewolves, vampires, witches, etc. At first, I was just going to read the werewolf books in the series. But then I decided to read the three that centered around the witches (Paige, Savannah and Eve) as well. Then because I couldn't get enough, I even went back and re-read this book and the second in the series. It's been a long time since I've re-read a book, especially so soon after reading it the first time. But you can really see the characters grow and mature with each book, which keeps you wanting to read more. Bitten is truly a terrific (and quick) read. I was sorry to see it end. I'm so glad I found Kelley Armstrong's books!

3 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Werewolves jockey for local power, no horses involved.

A woman gets involved in having the whole lycanthropy thing, and throws a bird among the bird dogs. She has to fit in, deal with those that she gives the horn, old human boyfriends, and all that sort of thing. A rather low-key focus at times makes this all a bit on the tedious side.

4 out of 5 stars A very neurotic heroine.......2007-09-01

I've enjoyed the book, its quirky and interesting, however, I sure hope that Elena gets over the neuroses that seems to consistently plague her throughout the book over the next books because it can get somewhat annoying in the long run. I'll read the other books though.

5 out of 5 stars This is a total rave because we just loved it!.......2007-08-08

There's a new werewolf in town. A whole pack of them, actually: Jeremy the Alpha, Nicholas, Antonio, Peter, Logan, and Elena, the only female werewolf in existence. To say she's regarded as special is a huge understatement. And there's Clayton, a werewolf with a genius IQ, a low frustration tolerance, and a simmering, smouldering, dark sexuality that'll make your hair curl. My goodness. Clay was taken under Jeremy's wing when he was found as a wild (werewolf) child, totally out of control. Now he's barely in control - dare we say, barely leashed? Elena has tried to leave this elite pack of werewolves, struggling as she does with the whole issue of not being human. To all appearances she leads a normal life as a journalist, with a live-in (normal) lover. She just has the odd midnight run as a wolf to keep her personal demons at bay. Then Jeremy calls her home, and the ties of the wild supersede everything else. Her elite pack is targeted by `mutts' - lone werewolves. The pack has something they want, and if necessary they'll fight to the death to get it. Oh, and Elena and the simmering Clay have, whew! lots of unfinished business... Bitten is a sensual, heart-stopping debut novel, real edge-of-the-seat stuff. This is a total rave because we just loved it! Clay's still sending a thrill - or is it a chill? down our spine.

L.A. Banks is the best! This is definitely a must read and one book I could not put down until I was done. Damali and Carlos is a force to be reckoned with. This book and The Hunted are right now my favorite in the Vampire Huntress Legend. For those that have not read this series I strongly suggest that you do.

5 out of 5 stars Different twist.......2007-01-16

I enjoyed this book. It was refreshingly different. Each story follows the good vs. evil theme, yet maintains an individuality that is uncommon in a series. I was fascinated with the concept of seven levels of heaven and hell.

first off im 19.....and this book is hott...U could really feel tha love between Damali and Carlos...and it aint no cheesy kind of love either....Who knew vampires could love so deeply and with so much passion and the "good"parts(if ya get what im saying) are just as real none of that corney romance novel stuff....real passion thats makes u almost drop a fang yourself and offer ur neck 4 carlos.....Carlos may be only a character but he is sexylol it did seem like the book slow down in the middle but u could still feel and really "get" what the characters were going through....Dare u 2 read and not be turn on....

1 out of 5 stars Wow..........2006-09-14

This book is terrible. I couldn't force myself to finish it and I read just about anything. The sheer amount of slang used in this book is overwhelming. I could feel my IQ dropping as I slogged through page after page. The story feels so flimsy and is not written well. I found my eyes still moving over the page but nothing was registering. It was really terrible. Please save your money, there are so many other authors out there that can really write and sell a good fantasy book. This just is not one of them...

5 out of 5 stars Take It As It Is.......2006-05-24

LA Banks brings the heat again bringing back the characters from her beloved Minion book which started the series that we know as the Vampire Huntress Legend. Damali has been compromised while Carlos attempts to remain true to her and all that she stands for.

Damali never thought she would see herself flux as hard as she did but when she finds herself surround by dark energy and having to do what it takes to survive Damali throws all precautions to the wind and takes in all that she knows to make her power plays and to remind everyone of what the Rivera's mean and what they stand for.

Carlos Rivera has loved Damali all of his adulthood and even decided that if necessary he would give her up to allow her to live a normal life but when things begin to take form he finds himself sitting between a rock and a hard place with decisions needing to be made and choices having to be dealt with he is willing to do everything to allow her to continue her safe journey and to do what she does and that's protect the living world. Carlos isn't sure what to do with Damali she is a force to reckon for but he will do everything within his willpower to keep her safe and to maintain his power to allow him to be what is he is but he knows he is willing to risk it all to keep Damali safe.

Carlos and Damali go on the adventure of their lives as they do everything necessary to protect their family and those who have become important but will it be enough to save everyone and to make sure everyone makes it to where they are suppose to go and where they are suppose to be. Book Description

An invitation into the magical, grueling, and virtually unknown world of exotic animal training

Behind the imposing gate of the Exotic Animal Training Program at California's Moorpark College lies a kingdom full of small mysteries, deep passions, and a camel that shoots hoops. Each year a select group of students descends on this teaching zoo to learn an improbable talent: how to communicate with animals. The only school of its kind, Moorpark pushes the limits of all the enrolled as they master hundreds of Latin species names and zoonotic diseases, all while hosing down cages at dawn and noting that Zulu the mandrill takes his morning juice in a paper cup— never plastic. The alumni of this elite program hold the most coveted positions at the world's finest zoos, aquariums, and sanctuaries. They are also the trainers who work in television and film, bringing Moorpark's enlightened methods to the business of animals for hire.

Author Amy Sutherland returns with the same impassioned voice that made her debut, Cookoff, such a delight. Kicked, Bitten, and Scratched is a fascinating look at a little-known profession for animal lovers everywhere.

3 out of 5 stars Good, interesting behind-the-scenes.......2007-09-11

This book was interesting. I picked it up because I got to know a group of Navy dolphin trainers, and I wanted to learn more about training.

I found the first-person narration style tedious. And I kept losing track of who was training which animals... a list at the back of the book, by trainer name, matched up to trainee, and with other pertinent info would have really helped. The next time I read it, I'll write one in the back of the book as I go along.

Best part about this book was that it pointed me to Karen Pryor's "Don't Shoot the Dog" -- a 5-star read if there ever was one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read!!.......2007-06-12

This is a great read and exactly what every inspiring animal trainer should read.

4 out of 5 stars a reality check for animal lovers.......2007-05-07

I bought this book after reading the author's article in the New York Times using the techniques she learned in the school on her husband. It was so funny I had to buy the book. I didn't give it five stars simply because it is very long and some of the subject matter gets difficult to read, but I would recommend this book to anyone who knows that owning and training animals on a professional level is more about hard bitten reality than love centered euphoria. As someone who has owned and trained horses for many years I saw similaries and learned a few things, too. Good read.

2 out of 5 stars Warning: This book is not about animals!.......2007-03-10

After putting the book aside half way through to pursue more rewarding activities, I realized I hadn't read the title carefully.

The title really says exactly what the book is about and the author's attitude about it. Her view on animals: they kick, bite and scratch. And poop, lots and lots of poop discussion. She doesn't really like animals and presents an unsympathetic view.

The second half of the title says the book is about life, meaning the students, not the animals. Most of the book is about how unpleasant the experience is, how unbalanced the students lives are and their broken relationships.

You won't learn anything about animals here. It has the unamusing feel of a required book report.

3 out of 5 stars not quite what the title promises.......2007-02-19

This is a book about a school for teaching people how to work with wild animals. It does a great job of introducing us to some of the people who work and study there, has a few stories about the animals (especially when they attack the trainers). What it DOESN'T have is any explanation of what the students learn other than passing references to operant conditioning. I find it surprising that someone could write about a school for hundreds of pages and yet avoid any description of what is actually taught. The book is, in fact, sub-titled "Life and Lessons ..." and yet not a single lesson is to be found!!

Now one objection might be that this isn't a training manual, its a description of the school. Sure, but describing at least some of the content that's taught would be both interesting and useful. Useful because many of the readers have pets. And while nobody would expect to read a book like this and be ready to become a movie-set trainer or work at an animal park, a discussion of how praise and operant conditioning can be used would have served to make the lives of innumerable pets better as owners learn a way to control and teach without punishment. And even if they don't do it perfectly or understand every nuance of the method, surely it can't be worse than the way so many animals are punished by people who don't know any other way.

As a much better counter-example of the genre, let me offer Tracy Kidder's books. Read "Soul of a New Machine" and you're not ready for a job as a computer programmer, but you have a much better understanding of how computers do what they do. Read his book "House" and you're not ready to build your own, but you have an appreciation of what goes into building them and an inkling of how to try some small repairs yourself.

4 out of 5 stars Silly Read.......2007-07-15

I found this book highly humorous. It was easy to read. Yes it is highly fluffy but fluffy is good. It is somewhat different than many books in this genre. It really concentrates on the vampire part more than the romance part. This is a good thing. However the ending itself is way too fairy tale. I am not sure why but I wanted something more to the ending.

5 out of 5 stars Bitten and Smitten .......2007-05-15

This book is funny, smart, and very interesting. I found it hard to put down.

4 out of 5 stars Okay - For a start to a series.......2007-03-10

I didn't realize that Rowen was starting a series with this book. Now knowing that, I can be more generous rating it.

Sarah Dearly is a snappy character who always seems to have a handy one-liner for every situation. Her sarcastic outlook makes even the most dire situations seem more humorous.

Theirry is a bit of an enigma. You don't really get to know him in the book, other than when other characters say that he likes Sarah. You have to take that on faith. I'm sure he'll be filled out more in the following volumes.

I have a hard time with the label "romance," since the romance isn't really there. As other reviewers have mentioned, there seems to be more chemistry between Sarah and Quinn than her and Thierry, but, hey, I'm not the author.

Pros: Humorous vampire-chick-lit-romance. Light reading for a "fluff book" mood. Great main character, interesting take on vampires/vampire lifestyles. Quick read.
Cons: Not really a romance in the strictest sense of the term. This book doesn't really form a complete story; the upcoming sequels will have to flesh out the situations more fully.

Overall, I would recommend it, but only to those with the patience to look out for the sequels, or who can enjoy the forest for the trees (or in this case, the book for its snappy one-liners).

2 out of 5 stars Chick Lit Vampire story.......2006-11-16

This book was more chick lit than romance. From the blurb on the back, I thought the book was going to be more like a light vampire romance like MJ Davidson, Kerrilyn Sparks, or Katie MacAlister. But the romance is missing, as is personality in all the characters.

The story started out well w/ the heroine being turned into a vampire against her will on a blind date, but w/in pages of her being turned into a vampire the story starts to go down hill in the first chapter. I really couldn't find myself interested in any of the characters, from the reflectionless immortal vampires that have never learned how to fight back against slayers even though they heal and outnumber them to any of the lackluster personalities of: the heroine, the suicidal vamp hero whose motto was to run and hide, the slayer turned vamp possible love interest, or the villainous slayers who had no reason for killing other than they enjoyed it.

Like a previous reviewer wrote, I found more romantic tension between the heroine and Quinn, the slayer turned vampire then the vampire, Thiery. There was absolutely no reason for the heroine and Thiery to romantically inclined. They barely even spoke to each other the entire book. In addition, Thiery's wife relating to his past personality of cowardly personality and hands off approach didn't endear him as a hero.

I wouldn't recommend this book, and if you do, buy it only used.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars fascinating.......2007-08-24

About: A very in depth look at the bites and stings of different animals and the diseases they may cause. Spiders, snakes, jellyfish, tsetse flies, cone snails, ticks, mosquitoes (including a particularly wonderful section on West Nile), Komodo dragons, alligators, crocodiles, seals, dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, camels, humans, monkeys, rabies, bird attacks and fish with spears are all covered. In fact, the only thing that I thought was missing was a section on sharks, but the addition of so many other biting animals more than make up for this omission. Besides, there are plenty of shark books, but this is the only book I've seen camel, donkey and seal bites addressed.

Pros: Engaging and fascinating. I looked forward to picking it up again after I put it down. Covers things I've never read about before. Scientific terms are clearly explained in the text as well as in the included glossary. Writing is very accessible. Great balance of science and anecdotes. Glossary, references.

Cons: A section on sharks was notably absent but this is a minor gripe considering what is covered

Grade: A+

5 out of 5 stars Part natural history work, part medical thriller, very interesting book .......2007-06-04

_Bitten_ by Pamela Nagami, is a very interesting and well-researched popular science compilation of information and stories about just about every animal that stings, bites, or can carry infectious disease. Though a few are left out (notably sharks), a great many are included, each chapter often opening up with an interesting case history of a person afflicted by one of the animals in question, followed up by information on the organism, details on the disease that they may spread, and generally several other case histories of various patients throughout the world (some of which are from the author's own experiences as a practicing physician specialized in infectious disease). I found riveting not only some of the case histories but also the incredible medical detective stories, both those relating to saving patient's lives and in other instances the struggle to develop an anti-venom or to find the animal spreading a disease. Several chapters included information on what the reader should do when confronted by this animal (for example tips on safe tick removal and effective treatment for cat and dog bites). A helpful glossary and extensive bibliography are included.

The first several animals included in the book are dangerous mainly because of their venomous bites or stings, namely fire ants, several spider species, Portuguese man-of-war and various jellyfish species, cone snails, and a number of venomous snakes.

The fire ant chapter was illuminating. I was fascinated to learn that fire ants are even more trouble than I had imagined; livestock have been known to starve when fire ants render their food inaccessible, thousands of trout have been found that died from venom poisoning after eating swarms of winged males and queens that had flown into lakes, and fire ants, attracted to the warmth of heated asphalt, have caused rural roads to collapse as they built mounds beneath them, the undermined soil eventually subsiding and causing the road to collapse.

The chapter on spiders was also quite interesting. The reasons why small spider bites can cause such huge problems for victims is still incompletely understood, but may have to do with an enzyme found in some spider venom (such as that of the brown recluse) that attacks and dissolves cell membranes. This enzyme sets a victim's defenses against his or her own tissue, leading white blood cells to dissolve a victim's flesh. This necrotic arachnidism is a worldwide problem and there isn't any consensus on best treatment.

The next group of animals was largely included for the ability to transmit infectious disease. Included in this section are ticks, tsetse flies (with the emphasis being largely on sleeping sickness), and the sandfly (which spread leishmaniasis, parasitic diseases of the skin, moist membranes of the mouth and airway, liver, spleen, and bone marrow, caused by protozoa of the genus _Leishmania_ ). Also included was a chapter on the West Nile virus, a chapter which read like a medical thriller.

Tick paralysis was very interesting to read about. At first a rather mysterious paralytic illness, physicians discovered that an attached tick could cause a type of spreading paralysis in a person or in livestock, a completely debilitating and even potentially fatal paralysis yet one that can be stopped and completely reversed when the tick is found and removed (viewers of the show _House_ will remember a case of tick paralysis from the series; indeed many of the case histories sound like the opening segments of a _House_ episode, minus of course the misanthropic doctor).

It was sad to learn that human African trypanosomiasis (East African and West African sleeping sickness) was present on the continent since prehistoric times but only became widely disseminated when Africans left their ancestral homelands thanks to roads and railways brought by the Europeans during the colonial period, a problem exacerbated when what measure of disease control maintained by the empires collapsed during the civil wars and chaos left in the wake of the European withdrawal.

Massive efforts were made to control sleeping sickness, including for a time the draconian method of wholesale destruction of wild game. In addition to "being repugnant to practically everyone," these efforts were doomed to fail because the tsetse fly, when deprived of lions, hartebeests, and bushbucks, simply moved to smaller game, and in areas cleared of wildlife, humans and their livestock moved in, becoming replacement hosts themselves for the parasites. Nagami quoted from Dr. Robert Desowitz, the author of an essay on sleeping sickness ("The Fly Who Would Be King"), who noted that "the tsetse and the trypanosome are the most stalwart guardians of the African ecosystem and its magnificent wild fauna."

The final section looked at animals that pose a danger from the damage caused by their teeth and claws and from the infection of those wounds. Included in this section where chapters on the komodo dragon, alligators, crocodiles, dogs, cats, ferrets, rats, horses, donkeys, camels, garfish, seals, roosters, owls, monkeys, the wildlife that spreads rabies, and surprisingly humans (human bite injuries, particularly to the knuckle joint, can become infected with the bacterium _Eikenella corrodens_ which can cause irreversible damage).

I was surprised to read how vicious ferrets can be. In 1988 alone physicians in Denver, Colorado reported three cases of severe facial injuries to infants from attacks by pet ferrets. In one instance a three-month-old girl, placed in her crib with her bottle, was attacked by the family ferret which managed to climb in and a few minutes chew off forty percent of both her ears. Another patient, a baby girl, lost her nose to a ferret attack.

A very interesting series of chapters, the squeamish reader is warned about "seal finger" (a bacterial infection caused by seal bites, one that can cause swollen and stiff fingers and joints and pain so agonizing that sealers once amputated their own fingers for relief) and rats eating the flesh of sleeping people (those with nerve damage, such from diabetes and leprosy, are quite susceptible to rat attacks at night).

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book to read while traveling........2006-12-30

Great book! Each chapter reads like a separate short story which makes it perfect for traveling.

4 out of 5 stars fascinating.......2006-11-22

If you like this genre of writing, you will enjoy this volume. Fascinating true stories, and yes, it would make a great travel guide for some.

As well-intentioned baby boomers are beginning to travel the globe as missionaries and volunteers, there is a certain amount of naiveté packed with the iPod. This book is a must read for anyone who is headed out into new climates and terrains. I do believe it will save lives.

5 out of 5 stars Superb New Alpha Male Series! .......2006-07-13

I'm a big fan of Ms King's "Horde Wars" series and thought I'd give this one a try. I thought it was about vampires, but its not---its about Werewolves!! I was pleasantly surprised. Put your myths aside please!!

This is Nikolai and Julia's story. Nikolai is the leader of the Ural Mountain pack family. He's Alpha, definitely--but he's good, kind and decent. Julia goes from a wilting, self-conscious people pleaser, to a wonderful, confident, sexy woman. This book was SEXY HOT!!!

Sometimes books labeled erotica sacrifice good writing for the----um---"eroticism." Not true with this very talented writer. Her writing is excellent, her storylines fresh and imaginative. I wait (impatiently) for the rest of the series.

I highly recommend "The "Horde Wars" series as well.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad book in a series that is promising.......2005-11-15

Nikolai is in town for a save the forests convention-not unexpected as he's a werewolf. The plot is pretty basic Werewolf sees girl (Julia who is working the front desk n the hotel he's staying at), werewolf gets girl, werewolf goes walkabout in central park. Girl (on the advice of older werewolf) goes after him; as she's starting her change some muggers get what they deserve.

Several good erotic scenes and some humor as well but light plot; better than average for the genre but not exceptional.

4 out of 5 stars Sherri King does it again..........2004-06-25

Sherri L King, one of the undisputed QUEENS of Ellora's Cave Romantica publishing, does it again with this second book of a series. The MoonLust books (4 right now, with a 5th in the works) create a world of cross-genre fiction that pulls you into the characters and their lives. Her writing is cross-your-legs-attack-your-husband-do-not-read without-a-fresh-supply-of-batteries HOT, and even though this book can stand alone... you will want to buy the other three and start emailing Ms. King to finish the fifth NOW!! If you like Erotic Romance (or Romantica as it is being called), Werewolves, Alpha Men, Strong Female Leads, and happy endings... this is a book for your keeper shelf (or Keeper Document file as the case may be). Ms. King also writes "The Horde Wars" series (about a demon fighting race of men and the women who kick butt with them), and some Vampire tales (with some cool twists)! Check out her other series at Ellora's Cave

4 out of 5 stars Sexy paranormal romantica!.......2004-06-23

This is the first book I read from Sherri L. King's Moon Lust series (this being the second installment) and I absolutely loved it. The story can stand on its own because a lot of the things that happened in the first offering fall into place in this one. Bitten is a luscious, romantic story of a struggling artist who meets the love of her life in the most interesting way. Julia works at a five-star hotel in New York to make ends meet and is unhappy with her uneventful life. That is until she meets the unforgivably sexy and mysterious Nikolai. Julia sees that Nikolai is not an ordinary man, especially during the bizarre moments in which he avoids her right after seducing her, not to mention his animalistic tendencies, but she is still shocked when Nikolai tells her that he is an alpha werewolf from the deep forests of Russia. Now it is Julia's job to keep Nikolai from changing into wolf in the heart of New York City...

This novel is more romance than erotica, but it is wonderful all the same. The story is enthralling, the characters are compelling and the sex scenes are pretty hot. Actually, with the exception of the scene in which Julia torments and teases Nikolai while he is tied up to the bed in a wolf-like, uncontrollable state, the scenes are not so very steamy, but the story is so good that I didn't care. I have taken an interest in paranormal fiction, especially if it's erotic and/or romantic, and this is as good as it gets. Sherri L. King is a great romance author. Ellora's Cave has once again satisfied me (so to speak) with this wonderful novel. I shall read other stuff by Ms. King. Highly recommended...

Book Description

In interpreting the timeless wisdom of the ancient Ashtavakra Gita for modern sensibilities, Manuel Schoch shows us very practically, step by step, how one can simply observe, instead of constantly reacting, projecting, desiring, and struggling in life. Instead of identifying with forms (the body, thoughts, feelings, habits, and experience) one can be connected to the everlasting consciousness that manifests forms. Out of this stillness emerge the qualities of life, love, peace, compassion, bliss, and enlightenment.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful description of how to rest in the stillness that generates the highest qualities of life.......2007-10-06

Swiss mystic and therapist Manuel Schoch presents Bitten by the Black Snake: The Ancient Wisdom of Ashtavakra, an interpretation of and commentary upon the timeless wisdom of the ancient Indian text of Ashtavakra, from the classic Vedanta period. Rendering the concepts into modern-day terms accessible to readers of all backgrounds, Bitten by the Black Snake reveals how to observe, rather than engage in the continual struggle created by the black snake of one's ego. Rather than identifying oneself through body, thoughts, feeling, habits, and experience, one can become connected to the everlasting consciousness that manifests these. "As Ashtavakra says, if you desire liberation, stop dealing with the mind. The Buddha said it differently - that enlightenment is the ending of identification. Only thoughts and fast and slow feelings can be identified with. You can never identify with the atmosphere; you cannot say this is my atmosphere. Climate cannot be identified with, but you can feel it even though you cannot grasp it as your own." A powerful description of how to rest in the stillness that generates the highest qualities of life, love, peace, compassion, and enlightenment.

3 out of 5 stars Is Melanie going to the dogs?.......2001-11-17

If you read the previous Melanie Travis mystery, Unleashed, and you are like me, you were likely disappointed to see Melanie's fiance Sam take off for an undetermined time following his ex-wife's murder for reflection and what-not. Berenson, however, appeases us in Once Bitten by fulfilling the promise of a wedding -- that of Melanie's brother Frank.

While she is happy to see her brother maturing into a responsible businessman and committing himself to dog trainer/knockout Bertie Kennedy, Melanie is still nursing the wounds of her breakup. When Bertie's flighty wedding planner, part-time trainer Sara, mysteriously disappears, Melanie finds there is no time left to cry over spilt engagements when Bertie pleads with her to find Sara...and help plan a wedding while she's doing that.

Berenson injects quite a dose of romance in this installment when in the midst of all this chaos, ex-husband Bob returns to town, clearly bitten by the reconciliation bug. I have to admit, Melanie's divided loyalties between maintaining a stable home life for son Davey (who is ecstatic to have his father so close) and yearning for her missing true love made for better suspense than the actual mystery, the disappearance and even more bizarre reappearance of Sara, a character I came to like less and less as the story progressed.

I have enjoyed the Melanie Travis series since its inception, but with Once Bitten I fear Berenson may be hitting her stride. However, the weaknesses detected in the actual mystery (the aforementioned Sara and her conflicts with her even less likable parents...Melanie herself admits she can't stand them) are bolstered by the compelling subplot. I certainly hope for the next book the mystery will be a bit meatier (no pun intended).

4 out of 5 stars Good but not her best.......2001-10-30

ONCE BITTEN brings back most of the familiar characters from previous Berenson tales (with a puzzling omission -- what happened to Aunt Peg's Douglas? He's missing in action here), and moves their relationships along nicely. However, there's so much going on -- the impending marriage of main character Melanie's brother and ravishing trainer Bertie (short for Alberta), the reappearance of Melanie's ex-husband, the move into judging for Aunt Peg, "finishing" Melanie's poodle's championship -- that the mystery seems more of an afterthought than the main event. Also, there's not much mystery -- the pointers to the guilty parties are pretty pointed. As always, the dog show segments are the most realistic, but the Christmas Eve chapter at the end is well worth the price of admission.

4 out of 5 stars The dogs are back---so Melanie, wake up.......2001-10-15

Melanie Travis tries to deal with her disappearing fiance when her future sister-in-law's wedding planner, Sara, also disappears and Melanie's ex-husband suddenly reappears and wants to play in Melanie's life. Melanie settles for sleuthing to find the missing Sara--only to discover that plenty of people want her to stay missing. They just might get their wish when Sara's house burns down and a woman's body is found inside.

What's best about this novel is the dogs. Melanie shows her standard poodle Faith and is working on 'finishing' her, i.e., achieving champion rank. When Melanie goes to the dogs, ONCE BITTEN goes well indeed. When Melanie fixates on men, I was tempted to roll my eyes--I mean, get on with it.

The mystery plays a third fiddle to Melanie's dog problems and her men problems. Fortunately, she doesn't have to do much to solve it.

Author Laurien Berenson's light tone, her wonderful descriptions of the dog shows and of dog people, and of the relationship between Melanie, her son, her aunt, her dogs, and her future sister-in-law make ONCE BITTEN a pleasure to read despite its flaws.

5 out of 5 stars Ms. Berenson combines dogs and mysteries better than anyone........2001-08-26

In the latest Melanie Travis mystery, her fiance Sam has gone off to find himself after the death of this exwife and former friend, leaving Melanie in the lurch. On the bright side, her brother Frank is about the marry Bertie, dog handler and friend of Melanie. Faith finally gets her second and final major, finishing her championship(her daughter Eve looks like a winner also). In the midst of all this, Bertie wants Mel to help with her wedding plans. She's hired a flakey dog groomer/handler/rich kid to do all the arrangements, so Mel wonders why. Then, ex husband Bob shows up six weeks before the wedding, newly divorced from his very young bride, looking to get back together with Mel. Then the wedding planner disappears and her cottage on her mother's estate burns down. A young woman's body is found in the ruins. Is it Sara the wedding planner? Who burned the cottage? Mel is determined to find out. This is the best of all her mysteries. Ms. Berenson has a gift for giving the reader a good mystery and not losing the dog show background. This book will appeal to readers who have no idea what is involved in the dog world, the characters and mystery are that good. I learn a little more with each book. Hopefully, Mel's trip to the obedience ring as a spectator will lead her in that direction also.

5 out of 5 stars Great amateur sleuth novel.......2001-08-17

Life is finally come together for dog show owner Melanie Travis. Even though she was supposed to be getting married during Christmas, she has come to grips that this is not going to happen. Her fiancé left for an unspecified time to find himself. She is delighted that her brother is getting married to Bertie, another person involved dog shows, in six weeks but she is horrified that her ex husband is going to be around for the same month and a half trying to win her back.

When Bertie's wedding planner Sara disappears leaving behind an ominous note, she asks Melanie for help in tracking down the missing woman. Before they can get very far in their inquiries, Sara's cottage burns down, which leaves behind the remains of a skeleton that can only be identified by dental records. When Melanie and company learn that arson caused the fire and that Sara remains alive though still out of sight, the group increases their efforts to find answers.

ONCE BITTEN, like the rest of the Melanie Travis mysteries, takes readers into the colorful and exciting world of dog competitions. Long time fans of this amateur sleuth series will be ecstatic that Faith finally won enough shows to be considered Champion by the AKC. Laurien Berenson has written another fine work in this delightful mystery series.

Book Description

In 1980, disaffected editors from the student daily of Dartmouth College founded an off-campus conservative newspaper known as The Dartmouth Review. For twenty-five years, this renegade student publication, funded largely by discontented alumni, has made national headlines through its unique, provocative, and controversial brand of journalism. In doing so, The Dartmouth Review has shined a spotlight on the progressively liberal assumptions of Dartmouth College and of higher education, radically changing the terms of campus debate.
This anthology presents the history of The Dartmouth Review in its own words, featuring the student writings of the leading conservative journalists of the Reagan era to the present. It also presents the story of a newspaper under constant attack by a liberal ideology that seeks to silence dissent--and the triumph of that newspaper over those attacks.
Featuring additional commentary by William F. Buckley Jr. and Jeffrey Hart, this volume recounts an important chapter in the history of campus activism, Dartmouth College, and the American conservative movement.

4 out of 5 stars I am SO glad I didn't go to Dartmouth..........2007-03-10

While I don't agree with every single position they take, I have to tip my hat to the _Dartmouth Review_ and its writers for their willingness to stand up to the campus liberal establishment and its endless harassment. I have had some hard things to say about my alma mater, but if I'd faced the sort of treatment some Review staffers got, my parents would have been up there with blood in their eyes, and the responsible faculty would have been in a World o'Hurt.

The Review's feud with an incompetent black music professor is worth the price of the book all by itself.

5 out of 5 stars I READ the book............2006-08-24

This book tells an important story about political correctness on America's college campuses today. It is told in a funny and sometimes hilarious way, as it contains stories about the screw ball left wing professors that populate our schools. Of course much of what went on was college silliness, but the Dartmouth Review has done so much to expose the pretensions of what passes for academic thought today that it can be forgiven. (P.S. the previous reviewer who did not read this book is one more example of the twisted minds out there today, a saboteur on the style of Michael Moore.)
